Raiders sign So’oto, waive Ihenacho

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, September 25th, 2012 at 2:22 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders signed former Green Bay Packers linebacker Vic So’oto Tuesday and waived Carl Iheanacho, the club announced.

So’oto, 6-foot-2, 255 pounds, played in seven games with the Packers last season after being an undrafted free agent out of Brigham Young. He was placed on injured reserve Aug. 31 with an ankle injury and released Sept. 10 following an injury settlement.

A second cousin of Junior Seau, So’oto had seven tackles and one sack for Green Bay last season, playing on special teams and defense.

Ihenacho, out of San Jose State, a defensive end by trade, moved to linebacker this season and played sparingly through three games.

The Raiders also released defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga from their practice squad.

Wide receiver Tori Gurley sent out a Tweet saying that he signed with the Raiders. A team spokesperson said no announcement was forthcoming Tuesday.

    Hmmmmm

maybe a lil 3-4 this week to generate some type of pass rush?? OLB Burris aka mini clay mathews ??

So I was on packers forums. Two guys they really liked was SOTO.. and Brandian ross. Packers wanted ROSS on PS because it was a numbers game but didnt want him claimed on waivers. Ross and SOTO have huge potential according to them

SOTO had a good game against the chiefs number 1’s

Albert Klas, ZBS and power blocking have both proven to be effective with the right coaching and personel across the NFL

The Beeech Diggity isn’t at practice to give his professional assessment on how suitable our lineman are for each scheme, or if they’re being properly coached

Power blocking did seem to work to a certain degree under Hue, especially in the short amount of time McFadden played last season

But I will say, in my professional opinion, that you’re still an idiot

Vic So’oto was the flavor many days at training camp and the preseason last summer, especially against Indianapolis, when he tore apart the Colts’ starters.

Moses, who played linebacker during his two years at Iowa, will enter training camp ahead of So’oto, who played on the defensive line at BYU. But So’oto is big and physical — just what position coach Kevin Greene looks for.

“He’s a good player,” Kevin Greene said of So’oto. “It’s going to be a very competitive camp. He’s a very physical kid. He’s learned, he’s improved.”

I find ridiculous that the media and NFL announcers look for any reason to jump all over the replacement refs, but when the “real refs” return they will ALL swallow their tongues when they screw up….which they often do as well.

    ———-

People are so quick to forget the tuck game and the other numerous BS calls that have gone against us.

Or the very obvious time that the old refs once screwed up the coin toss on Thanksgiving day.

On one hand, Goodell and the owners are true pieces of chit for trying to take away pensions that were already agreed upon and in writing.

But on the other hand, these new refs have made the game football again. People seem to forget what it was like when players could hit each other.

    ^^^^^^^
Yeah Goodell and his cronies trying to break up the Ref Union is just disgusting actually.

DMC’s 65 yarder was a play called to the left and Palmer checkout of that because blitz heavy on that side, so he just changed the play ton go to right.
    =======================================

That was a Palmer call. He also called another draw to McFadden later that worked out as well. Palmer also called a sweep to the left right into the defense. That didn’t work too well, but I think in the second half once Carson started calling plays, we scored 5 straight times.

  90. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

if you thought the Green Bay Packers were not going to be able to replace his pass rush ability, say hello to Vic So’oto.

The undrafted free agent will be part of a group that includes defensive end Mike Neal and nose tackle B.J. Raji and will be obliged to fill the void Jenkins left when he took his services to Philadelphia.

Based on the Packers’ final two preseason games, So’oto is going to be a player who can help their pass rush right away.

In the final two games, he notched 2½ sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception returned for a touchdown, sealing his place on the 53-man roster and marking him as a candidate to play against New Orleans in the season opener. The fact much of So’oto’s work came against the opponents’ starters says a lot about his legitimacy.

“He’s a beast, a young beast,” veteran nose tackle Howard Green said. “That’s what I call him, ‘Young Beast.’ He’s just a stud. He’s strong and he’s talented and he’s coachable.”

And he’s also a member of the 2011 Packers, although that won’t be official until Saturday when final cuts are made.

So’oto would have to go out and rob a bank to blow his shot at making the 53-man roster and even that probably wouldn’t lead the Packers to release him. There’s more than a dozen and a half teams who are kicking themselves that they didn’t project So’oto to make the adjustment from 4-3 defensive end at Brigham Young to 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL.

All it cost the Packers was a signing bonus of $8,500 to attract So’oto to Green Bay.

After they watch film of the Packers’ 20-19 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night at Lambeau Field, the others will see that So’oto dominated the game, personally snuffing out the Chiefs’ first two drives and then later adding the game-winning points with a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown.

His initial thoughts after the game was that he could have done more and that outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene was going to chew him out for the mistakes he made, including a technical error on the scoring play.

But there’s no way Greene or anyone else could have ignored the production the rookie had against a Chiefs team trying to get its No. 1 offense quality work.

“I could have had a couple more sacks if I had gone inside instead of outside,” So’oto said when asked what he could have done better. “KG is going to be very disappointed.”

Maybe in the short term he will, but in the long term Greene and the rest of the defensive coaches had to be elated that they had found a pass-rushing source they never envisioned when they allowed Jenkins to leave. So’oto might be able to be used right away in passing situations to complement Matthews, Raji and a healthy Neal, thereby softening the loss of the team’s second-best pass rusher.

“We just have to play good football and just carry out the game plan,” Raji said. “You don’t expect to replace Cullen Jenkins with one player, but as long as guys are playing hard and not hurting us (we’ll be all right).”

On Thursday, So’oto hit the trifecta with his big plays, sacking the quarterback on third down, stripping a running back of the ball and returning the interception for a touchdown. If he had been wearing jersey No. 52, no one would have known it wasn’t Matthews inside the helmet.

On the very first series of the game, he drove right tackle Barry Richardson backward and sacked quarterback Matt Cassel for a 4-yard loss. On the very next series, he showed up again, this time stripping the ball from 1,400-yard rusher Jamaal Charles at the Packers 19, snuffing out another drive.

“I tackled him from behind and when I reached around I could feel the ball,” So’oto said. “I just pulled it out.”

Before finishing off the game with his interception, he shared a sack with linebacker D.J. Smith that destroyed yet another drive by the Chiefs’ No. 1 offense, which played into the third quarter.

Then, with the Packers trailing, 16-13, with 4½ minutes to go in the third, So’oto jumped quarterback Tyler Palko’s pass in the flat to receiver Dexter McCluster and raced 33 yards to the end zone.

So’oto somewhat sheepishly described the play.

“I actually messed up,” he said of allowing the tight end to get outside of him. “Coach is going to yell at me. In practice I messed that up, too. But I knew he was going to throw the ball to McCluster. I was hoping he would.”

The emergence of So’oto means the Packers have four quality outside linebackers they can use interchangeably: Matthews, Erik Walden, Frank Zombo and So’oto. Walden is still the starter because he’s more versatile and less prone to mistakes, but you can bet defensive coordinator Dom Capers will find a way to use So’oto opening day against New Orleans.

    “So’oto’s a big-time player,” Raji said. “He’s exactly what you’re looking for.”

Question to the group…knowing the tight Raider financial situation..

    1. Would you pay an extra $5 to $10 per ticket or and $20 for the NFL Ticket in order to get the real refs back?

My guess is that most fans would say no.

    2. Would the players take a little less so the real refs would come back?

    3. Would you rather see the games cancelled until the real refs came back? What would the players want?

The owners have to ask if they are willing to take less or lose their sport.

Its a bad situation…..also, if the owners were to agree to the refs proposal, what happens when the next group comes up for negotiation.

Just curious on thoughts on this.

I actually think the big issue is player safety…like the travesty with DHB.

Guy makes ONE mistake in life, and he has no character.

Guy misses ONE tackle and he’s a slo slug.

Nevermind that our run defense is pretty damn good, eh? The 2 qtrs it wasn’t McClain was playing with a concussion.

55 is the QB of the defense. Getting guys lined up, calling the signals, etc.

Guy had 9 tackles, in on a fumble, and played pretty good pass defense.

    Good Job 55!-
    ————————————
    I don’t dislike Slolando.

The Raiders had a total of 79 TEAM tackles.

49 of those tackles were solo tackles, or 65%.

Slolando recorded 3 solo tackles of 9 recorded, or 33% of his tackles were solo.

This is true. 3rd and two and the Raider defense makes a nice stop half a yard short. Tomlin gambles from inside his own what 35, and GOES FOR IT on 4th. Kelly and Seymour stand the play up, there is nothing there, and Redman shifts to his left and picks up 6 yards and a lst down. Once again, where was the LB on that play? That could have cost us the game.

  258. Kirk Says:

Broncos linebacker Joe Mays has already tried to plead his case with the Texans’ offensive line. If he wants to play this weekend, he’ll have to do the same with the NFL.

Mays has been suspended for one week and charged a $50,000 fine for his illegal hit against Texans’ quarterback Matt Schaub. The hit knocked Schaub’s helmet off that took with it a piece of Schaub’s left ear.

Pryor needs a LOT of work. And playing on the scout team is not the type of work Pryor needs. So Pryor is in kind of a bad situation. Carson Palmer is an overall number one and has played like an overall number one the last six or so games with the Raiders so there is little to no chance that Pryor is going to get a chance to move up.

The best thing that can happen to Terrel Pryor is he is going to have to put in A LOT of work in the offseason on his own, and with NFL players to try to develop his game. In the preseason he is going to have to shine. His time will come eventually, and with a lot of extra work and preparation, he will get his chance. That’s the best Pryor and his fans can hope for right now.

You all remember how good Miller was for awhile, Myers learned from him……and Boss.
Myers, Gordon and Ausberry are starting to look legit.

Running keeps Peyton off the field and eats up the clock.

Exxpect more play action and throws to the middle of the filed to Meyers or Ausberry.

I would also expect some screens, we haven’t seen that many and this Sunday we should see some.

Lastly DA will have a little up his sleeve for the defense of the DONKS as he knows most of the guys on that side of the ball.

Peyton is the X Factor. run the ball, stop the run, and a few blitzes and sacks on Peyton and we should be able to creat some turnovers.

    ===============================================

I wrote yesterday that the 3rd and 10 conversion to Myers that essentially won yesterdays game was one of the most amazing throws I have EVER seen. Palmer put that into about a 6inch by 6 inch window. And it was a dart. Myers made a HUGE PLAY, got concussed, and STILL held on. Big time play from both of those players.

I have not chimed in on this debacle and watching the game live I thought CLEARLY it was a GB INT. The only issue is when Tate lands on his ass he either has the ball or has part of the ball. The play would be over right there. The GB player rolls over and takes the ball at that point. I think Seattle does have some claim. Still it is a travesty.

Forgot how big that KO return by Goodson was.

Down 10 in the 3rd quarter, if he returns that to the 16 yard line, the shoulders start to sag a little. Instead he had a nice cut back, hit the jets, and got it past midfield.

Also watch the Darren TD that got reversed to just short of the goalline. Our buddy Carlisle blocks one guy to the ground, than gets a good shove in on TWO OTHER PLAYERS, and is right there slapping Darren on the tail leading him in.

    That’s a captain.

Denarius Moore appears to take the ball away from the defender for a bit but then he gets it back.

We did run it a bunch last year, the problem with it is it becomes predictable. You are only going to run so many no huddle plays, not your entire playbook so teams will eventually catch up to what you are most likely to run.

    ========================================

yeah put an asterisk because their darlings

    Pittsburgh 1-2
    New Orleans 0-3
    New England 1-2
    Green Bay 1-2

are on the slide, and they have no nuts to slobber on (Brees, Brady, Rodgers, etc)

loving it!!! Even Deion was answering “who?” – when Marshall Faulk said The Raiders are a different team when Denarius Moore is on the field.

If the Hawks, Vikes, Bills, and us end up making the playoffs, it’ll be “well, it was a replacement ref enhanced” season for them.

I say its karma. Obviously, these refs arent calling a lot of ticky tack penalties, and you can obviously see from the records – how it is ultimately affecting the above teams who get the calls continuously and have for years (Pack in Lambeau, especially)
