Raiders sign veteran DE
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, September 26th, 2012 at 2:35 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders signed veteran defensive end Andre Carter on Wednesday in a move designed to generate more pressure on the quarterback.
Carter last played in 2011 for the New England Patriots, when he notched 10 sacks. The Raiders worked out Carter once in training camp and early this season.
The Raiders recorded only three sacks their first three games. Defensive end Desmond Bryant said the addition of a proven pass-rusher such as Carter will make everyone around him better.
Carter entered the NFL as a first-round draft pick of the 49ers in 2001. He played for the 49ers for five seasons before signing with the Washington Redskins in 2006 and spending five seasons there.
Overall, Carter has 76 sacks in 163 regular-season games. Four times he has posted at least 10 sacks in a season, including a career-best 12 ½ for the 49ers in 2002.
The Raiders cut second-year offensive tackle Joseph Barksdale to make room for Carter on the 53-man roster.

His 76 career sacks ranks eighth among active NFL players.
The San Jose native earned his first Pro Bowl selection, named a starter, after totaling 10 sacks with the Patriots in 2011. He tied a New England franchise record with four sacks at the New York Jets on Nov. 13, earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors, and was credited with 22 quarterback hurries on the season. He played in 110 consecutive games before being placed on injured reserve with a leg injury on Dec. 20, causing him to miss two games and all three of the Patriots’ playoff contests.
Carter has recorded 10 or more sacks in a season four times during his career, including a career-high 12.5 sacks with the 49ers in 2002. He totaled 10.5 sacks in 2007 and 11 in 2009, both with the Redskins.
He finished his collegiate career as California’s all-time leader with 31 sacks, earning unanimous first-team All-America selections from the Associated Press and The Sporting News as a senior. He prepped at Oak Grove High School in San Jose, receiving USA Today All-America honors.
His father, Rubin, played for the Denver Broncos (1975-86) and was an assistant coach for the Redskins from 1999-2000.
Gurley, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound receiver, spent the entire 2011 season on the Packers’ practice squad after signing as a non-drafted free agent out of South Carolina. He was in training camp with Green Bay this season and was released from the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad on Sept. 18.
To make room on the team’s active roster, the Raiders Wednesday waived offensive lineman Joe Barksdale.
September 26th, 2012 at 2:41 pm
Reggie is not trying to win it all.. just trying to compete while he changes everything over the next few yrs. If he wanted to win now he would have waited to change offenses.

do you disagree or just not understand that many (including our gm, likely) feel the Raiders aren’t trying to “win now” but instead “evaluate/build long-term”?
—————————
i feel Reggie wont hurt the team LONG TERM. It doesnt mean he cant bring in help in the short term , especially with Ford and DHB on the shelf. Plax may hinder streaters development, but who cares? Streater isnt the future.Look at the numbers louis murphy put up rookie year, its one thing if he drafted a WR in the 1st round and then brought in Plax. Why bring in Andre Carter then? lets have a young guy from the practice squad get his time based on your logic.
Plax would be a short term fix that has no negatives long term unless you think streater and criner are the next Rice and Clark.

Yep. Im dead serious. Behind closed doors he felt it was worth keeping this team together for at least one year. Felt we had as good a chance as any with DMC and Palmer.
If it doesnt work out, we cut costs and officially start the rebuild next offseason.
But if it works he thinks he can keep the core of the team together based on resignings/restructures due to the fact that we are a winning team. And then avoid the pending cap situation on the horizon. Players tend to stick around at a discount if were winning.

I’d agree with Reggie that we have a solid core to build around (Palmer, DMac, Moore, DHB, Wiz) but for him to think we could seriously go deep THIS year just seems odd, especially when HE’S trimming guys left and right because he sees we have few impact players/depth.

I’m trying to temper my expectations for the Broncos game. They’ve been beaten by two very strong teams in Atlanta and Houston. Still think we have a shot but one of the biggest problems with the team has been consistent execution. I know Allen’s preaching the fundamentals but it still may take some time to translate to the field.
Anyone else think we end Manning’s career on Sunday?

best case: somehow a 10-sack player was overlooked by almost every team and ended up with us. Sweet edge-rush improvement.
worst case: there’s a reason no one has signed him yet and he won’t add much to our D.
middle ground: average edge rusher, 5 sacks this year (right now we have nothing but below-average edge rushers).

maybe he is, but he caught 8 tds last year something no raider has done since 2005. I’d bring him in for a workout. The Jets had to keep holmes due to salary handcuffs and loved stephen Hill as a WR, who they traded up in the 2nd round to get. Big difference between Hill and an undrafted guy like streater. thats why they dont need plax.
September 26th, 2012 at 3:17 pm
I agree with a lot of Cork’s analysis, but his explanation that Roethlisberger’s ability to evade the pass rush was the reason the Raiders didn’t get sacks/pressure was just silly. Anyone could see they weren’t getting much push, and this move puts an explanation point on that conclusion. Good to know they’re trying to address the obvious stuff.

Receiving TDs aren’t the end-all stat to measure a guy by.
Laurent Robinson had 11 TDs last season. (crickets chirping).
Plax’s yards per catch are in steady decline. He’s not doing as much with the ball, not getting open as often, doesn’t play special teams, and is only getting WORSE as time goes by.
Again, if we were a playoff team, sure! We can spend a roster spot on a red zone niche. But on a rebuilding team, I’d rather see what we have.

While I agree that no matter how you spin it, we need edge pass rushing help, I disagree on the point about Big Ben.
I mean put a stop watch on some of those plays. Ben is the best in the league at moving left, right forward, backwards, whatever it takes until the last second to make a throw to a guy who has broken off his route and now is just finding an open hole in the defense. Its schoolyard ball and he did it to us time and again last Sunday.
Part of it was initial pass rush issues, but I do not expect it to be so hopeless against other QBs because they dont extend the play like Ben does. He does it to everyone he plays. Not just us. Its what makes him a special QB. Hes very unique and its frustrating to play against someone like that.

Belicheat fined 50k for a little pull on the official’s shirt, Mundy fined 21k for sending DHB into next week…took half an hour to cart him off…and not getting flagged for it? something seems off

What a list.

Are you kidding me.The other day Mike Francesa from WFAN IN New York was angry because Our Raiders only had 2 penalties.I mean he had a nasty SCOWL on his face just because Our RAIDERS had just 2 penalties. My jaw hit the ground in disbelief. He hates the Raiders as well as the Regular Refs.

September 26th, 2012 at 4:10 pm
If the mob refs come back we’re getting 10+ flags tossed at us. And we’ll really feel it vs atl.

Beachy Dawg,
My duece log was so large it popped up and made an appearance in my next door neighbors bowl. My neighbor wants to charge me rent if I do it again. Please let me know what the PMPP would do. I’ve seen this blog everyday and see that you are well versed in dueceology. Please professor help me.
I was thinking, maybe can your boat come and pick it up and tow it out to sea?

PC, while I can appreciate your predicament, we – the members of the PMPP – cannot offer to an invitation yet to apply for membership
You must first establish a solid rep on the blog, which can only be accomplished by:
1) partying serious
2) bagging on my minions (Nob Peemore Bust is always an easy target to warm up on)
3) getting straight up fizzle with a sweet margarita
We’re keeping an eye on you, brah. It’s now up to you to rise to the challenge or fade into blog oblivion.

Good signing. I like this signing because our pressure on each QB this season has been nearly non-existent. I’m hoping Carter puts mega pressure on bobble head Sunday because we know…Manning can perform some amazing stuff if there is little to no pressure upon him.

Marks Hair, you already ready know what time it is when those regular refs return. We will get at least 12 or more penalties. They are going to make up for lost time against Our Raiders.Watch and see.

BOLD, being that Reggie has brought in 0-ZERO RB’s to work out for team, even in pre-season.
Taiwan safe for this season, not a great need at all.
September 26th, 2012 at 4:19 pm
even if regular refs come back and throw 2 or 3 extra flags a game , we’re still not going to hurt our chances with Offsides and false starts… what was it 1 false start and 0 offsides? nice.. last year it seemed like half of the penalties were from false starts or offsides

I wonder who Carter grew up rooting for ? The Raiders or the Whiners? I love players on this team , who also grew up rooting for us … I hate A Rodgers.. just because he grew up rooting for the Niners and he wasn’t even mad when his team was losing to them .. wtf

I am thinking maybe Andre Carter might be a stop gap player until So’oto’s ankle heals. Carter might be good for a game or two but hard to believe he has a ton left in the tank.

I know but what I’m saying is , we have really stopped committing pre-snap penalties… last year was a different story .. we were always going offside , and so many false starts… I know those flags are going to come when they are playing but just hope we don’t hurt our chances with Pre-Snap , Penalties

I don’t think they are getting rid of Jones. But when you have a bad game or don’t practice you are going to sit. That’s the accountability we all wanted to see from Al.

Taiwan is prob the most talented 3rd string RB in the league. For that reason alone you give him special teams action and let him continue to grow.
1st game he blew that reverse with Reece, but that play was installed for him and only him, thats saying something, Goodson came with experience and a handful of starts so Taiwan will get some plays again when the time is right.
a new 3rd string RB is not a need, so not a clue why you think they would be cutting him? at this point use his speed and put him at CB lol

Look at every 3rd string RB in the league ….
none is faster, or as explosie, if you think he isn;t either of those? he cant pass protect but he was behind McFadden & Bush and now Mcfadden & Goodson. he will become a solid player like a dexter mccluster.
September 26th, 2012 at 4:43 pm
We all know the mob officials (I like that description) will screw the Raiders whenever they get the chance. But teams like the Stealers who were pushing the envelope might also have some problems trying to re-adjust.
September 26th, 2012 at 4:43 pm
The Squeelers didn’t even really try to run it. Dungver has not been overly successful trying to run it. I am thinking we are going to see a repeat of last week where Manning heaves it 8 times for each time they run. Having Carter and others out there may spell the Dlinemen a bit.

Its all those loads cork been blowing about him all camp.
September 26th, 2012 at 4:45 pm
Denver’s WRs are not Pittsburg’s, then again neither were Miami’s;
Raiders must get to Peyton with 3-5 pass rushers or we will pick us apart.
Burris & Wheeler keep playing great linebacker play; keep the rushing yards under 50; take away play action.
Raider’s offense score early; put pressure on Denver to score.
