The Raiders signed veteran defensive end Andre Carter on Wednesday in a move designed to generate more pressure on the quarterback.
Carter last played in 2011 for the New England Patriots, when he notched 10 sacks. The Raiders worked out Carter once in training camp and early this season.
The Raiders recorded only three sacks their first three games. Defensive end Desmond Bryant said the addition of a proven pass-rusher such as Carter will make everyone around him better.
Carter entered the NFL as a first-round draft pick of the 49ers in 2001. He played for the 49ers for five seasons before signing with the Washington Redskins in 2006 and spending five seasons there.
Overall, Carter has 76 sacks in 163 regular-season games. Four times he has posted at least 10 sacks in a season, including a career-best 12 ½ for the 49ers in 2002.
The Raiders cut second-year offensive tackle Joseph Barksdale to make room for Carter on the 53-man roster.
