Raiders sign veteran DE

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, September 26th, 2012 at 2:35 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders signed veteran defensive end Andre Carter on Wednesday in a move designed to generate more pressure on the quarterback.
Carter last played in 2011 for the New England Patriots, when he notched 10 sacks. The Raiders worked out Carter once in training camp and early this season.
The Raiders recorded only three sacks their first three games. Defensive end Desmond Bryant said the addition of a proven pass-rusher such as Carter will make everyone around him better.
Carter entered the NFL as a first-round draft pick of the 49ers in 2001. He played for the 49ers for five seasons before signing with the Washington Redskins in 2006 and spending five seasons there.
Overall, Carter has 76 sacks in 163 regular-season games. Four times he has posted at least 10 sacks in a season, including a career-best 12 ½ for the 49ers in 2002.
The Raiders cut second-year offensive tackle Joseph Barksdale to make room for Carter on the 53-man roster.

Nyraider-and I believe you are over-rating Plax.He ,like TO,is washed up.The Jets need WRs worse than we do and wanted nothing to do with him. Also, the new staff does’t seem to want head cases like him.

ESPN poll voted Raiders best team in AFC West. They got 29% of vote.

Carter is a probowler.. hope he’s got some juice

best case: somehow a 10-sack player was overlooked by almost every team and ended up with us. Sweet edge-rush improvement.

worst case: there’s a reason no one has signed him yet and he won’t add much to our D.

middle ground: average edge rusher, 5 sacks this year (right now we have nothing but below-average edge rushers).

it’s just as fun to pretend Klas is legit as it is to pretend Beeech spends half his day everyday pruning his skin in a hot tub.

It’s not so much a hope or prediction based on performance as it is an instinct or intuition. I believe someone else posted it; we somehow get to Peyton, end his career and then incur the wrath of the NFL as a result.

It’s a perfect Raiders narrative…I hope it doesn’t come true though

maybe he is, but he caught 8 tds last year something no raider has done since 2005. I’d bring him in for a workout. The Jets had to keep holmes due to salary handcuffs and loved stephen Hill as a WR, who they traded up in the 2nd round to get. Big difference between Hill and an undrafted guy like streater. thats why they dont need plax.

  • kidseven

I agree with a lot of Cork’s analysis, but his explanation that Roethlisberger’s ability to evade the pass rush was the reason the Raiders didn’t get sacks/pressure was just silly. Anyone could see they weren’t getting much push, and this move puts an explanation point on that conclusion. Good to know they’re trying to address the obvious stuff.

Forget a lot of what the media or coaches say and go with what you see with your own eyes.

Criner is for real. Mark that down in black Sharpie. Hope he gets some run this week.

That was last year.Plus he is a knucklehead. No knuckleheads allowed. As for Strearer, plenty of undrafted guys turn into great pros.If he can play his draft position makes no difference.

  • alex7

Receiving TDs aren’t the end-all stat to measure a guy by.

Laurent Robinson had 11 TDs last season. (crickets chirping).

Plax’s yards per catch are in steady decline. He’s not doing as much with the ball, not getting open as often, doesn’t play special teams, and is only getting WORSE as time goes by.

Again, if we were a playoff team, sure! We can spend a roster spot on a red zone niche. But on a rebuilding team, I’d rather see what we have.

  • Twocents

Doubt that Carter will play this Sunday. Should be able to contribute something in Atlanta. I hope.

  • alex7

    and nyraider

the difference between Plax and Carter is that we have no young DEs that we haven’t evaluated yet. We know what we have there and it’s not much.

Good signing, I don’t see why he couldn’t play this week, all he will be asked to do is rush passer on passing downs, hes a vet Im sure he will be ready to play

While I agree that no matter how you spin it, we need edge pass rushing help, I disagree on the point about Big Ben.

I mean put a stop watch on some of those plays. Ben is the best in the league at moving left, right forward, backwards, whatever it takes until the last second to make a throw to a guy who has broken off his route and now is just finding an open hole in the defense. Its schoolyard ball and he did it to us time and again last Sunday.

Part of it was initial pass rush issues, but I do not expect it to be so hopeless against other QBs because they dont extend the play like Ben does. He does it to everyone he plays. Not just us. Its what makes him a special QB. Hes very unique and its frustrating to play against someone like that.

good observation, kelly and company will look like much better “pass rushers” with an edge rusher and the corners won’t have to cover as long. If we can just beat denver we can really have something with carter and spencer in the fold….

Carter is an absolute physical specimen. I met him once and talked with for about a half hour. He’s intelligent and just impresses u with his size. Tall and athletic looking. Wide shoulders. U can see why he has been so successful. I always had hope that he would end up here. Good guy too. I’m hoping he ignites the rush.
