Where’s Purvisman et. al., the longest tenured blogster been lately? Want to know if they still have the annual fair in Grass Valley still. Happened to catch one about 40 years ago on my way to Gurnneville.

  12. Custom Raider Says:

Why would Mark Davis want the team in LA when he can fly down there to party anytime he wants. The man is a jetsetter outta the ’80s.

I remember seeing Al Davis and his entourage getting off the bus with the players. About six buses would arrive at the stadium (when the Raiders are on the road of course) and Al was right there with’em.

But has anyone noticed when the Raiders travel in buses now to the stadiums (on the road of course), there is a limo parked there too where the buses wait. Wonder if Mark and Reg stylin into the games. I think that would be pretty awesome tho. New School.

  13. Sullivan44 Says:

Broncos are 1-2, coming off back to back painful losses. The world is watching Manning. Must win in every sense of the word. We played a great game against the Steelers, but we don’t have enough it factor to stop Peyton when his back’s against the wall.

Denver 28, Raiderrs 17. ….and Al Saunders couldn’t save us.

Niners will edge out Jets on the road. Another bad weekend for the Nation, and I think we’ll be 8-8 this year because of all the changes. But I think Reggie was the right choice, and we’ll be a top tier team either next year, or in 2014. A cinderella run this year would be welcome.

  14. Sullivan44 Says:

Question is, why does LA want the Raiders? People act as if LA is just salivating for us, like a teenage girl waiting on Justin Bieber. Think so? I say they’re open to the highest bidder. Sentimental value with Raiders, cause they’ve been there before? Pffft. They can just have whatever team ends up there change to black uniforms, promote a gangsta image, problem solved. I think the Raiders stay in Oakland, and that’s a good thing.

  15. Sullivan44 Says:

The ONLY reason Raiders moved to LA in the first place: Al thought LA would gravel at his feet. He thought the Raiders would be bigger than Hollywood. Dumb idea. Todd Christensen talked about this in America’s Team: ‘83 Raiders. Al went to LA with delusions of grandeur, and came back to Oakland not much differently than a failed actress takes a bus back to Iowa after the owner of the club she dances at tells her she’s too old for another boob job.

    Sully,

Denver’s LB corps is VERY thin.

The chances of DMC taking over the game are very good. I dont think it is a lock that we lose this one.

  17. rediaR Says:

I think we might win, which probably means we’ll lose.

  18. Plunketthead Says:

Whats with all the Manning is great, Denver is dam good, dumberville and Von uberrush will kill CP, Our WR’s are hurt, we cant stop the pass, waahh, oh and most important, KNAPP is no good.

Truth is Manning blows and so do the Mules
We will own them like the rented arses they are. We have owned them in the mile low toilet for almost forever, DMAC is overdue to break out, we have a top 5 QB!! (thats unbelievable, but its true) We have the Mad science dude, we have the DA who knows a little bit about donkeys

Have some faith in your team. Come Monday morning Dungver headlines = Bring Back TEBOW

Raiders will kick butt. I told you what the game plan is last tuesday after my spy texted it to me.

DMAC = lots and lots of touches before the bye. Wiz and Willie complete the line and they have now been working together long enough for it to make a big difference.

I plunkdict that DMAC will gain 150 yards rushing and 100 in the air

  19. Raider Riff Says:

If you take a look at the various Raider chat sites, the overwhelming concern amongst the Nation is not any weakness with the Raiders, and not any player or strength on Dunver. EVERYONE seems to be worried most about the refs.

    ———

Let’s list the REALLY dumb ones we wish we could have back…

    - Moving the Raiders to LA
    - Passing on Marino, but then later taking the gamble on Marinovich and Russel
    - The Marcus Allen debacle
    - Signing Larry Brown for just 2 million under what he previously offered Deion
    - Trading Gruden
    - Letting Charles Woodson walk
    - Letting Nnamdi walk / Signing Routt for the same it would have cost to keep Nnamdi

There have been some brilliant moves by Al over the years but this list here is his all-time idiotic moves list. And worst of all, they make just as little sense in hindsight as they did at the time he did them.

  27. Just Fire Baby Says:

I think making TK one of the highest paid defensive players in football was pretty foolish.

TK has played OK at times, better and worse at others, but he has never even been the best defensive player on our team, better yet anything close to the best in the league.

  28. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Jovan Walker?

That may have been the least production per dollar of any of Al’s contracts.

  29. Raider Riff Says:

JFB, neither one of those hold a candle to any on the list I provided.

That said, Javon Walker might make the top 10. That was awful but lets be real, we made Randy Moss looked washed up back then. We were career suicide. Nobody was ever going to succeed here.

Don’t forget about Warren Sapp and Randy Moss.

    ———-

Sapp had like what, 10 sacks for us one season? Sapp was not the problem. HOF player. Hardly the reason our team was a dumpster fire. Had Gannon not gotten hurt during Sapp’s first year with us, there is a good chance we make a deep run in the playoffs. That was a VERY talented team.

Remember, we started 2-1 and then when into the tank after Gannon got hurt.

Moss? Again, was he really the problem? His years in New England proved he was NOT the issue.

Remember, Al could have had Bellicheat at one time. Instead Bellicheat went to a team with a owner that was willing to do whatever the coached asked in order to win. Sound familiar? That is how Madden used to describe his days with Al.

Fact is, we could have had the environment that Randy could have succeeded in, but we didnt. We had a environment that NOBODY could succeed in.

Conventional wisdom would say this is all true.

But we still need to see if this team can handle success as a org. Historically, this roster hasnt.

If last weeks team shows up, we do exactly what you think we should, and we dominate.

If the first two weeks teams show up, we shoot ourselves in the feet, and kill ourselves, we will struggle and most likely lose.

At this point, the smart money says we dont know which team will show up. We only know what this team is capable of at both ends of the spectrum.

  34. Just Fire Baby Says:

At least when we got rid of Moss, we were able to net John Bowie in exhange, lol.

Randy Moss probably scored more TD’s since we traded him, than John Bowie had attended practices.

  35. Just Fire Baby Says:

There are a few Raider players on this team who haved experienced a lot of winning in Denver.

Slo, Savage, McFadden, Veldheer, Myers, hell even Huff and Branch, TK.

Those are the guys who will lead this team this weekend, in another glorious Donkey beatdown.

    ———-

And since 2008, in each of those wins, we’ve done it coming off of a loss. A bounce-back game.

We are notoriously bad coming off of a win. Like I said, handling success is just as difficult as handing loses.

Dunver is out to prove they can handle adversity right now. We did that last week. Now we need to prove we can handle moderate levels of success. Which we havent been able to do as of late. Just look at our track record in games where we thought this team was going to turn the corner and “join the discussion”.

We have a lot to prove this weekend. And until we can ring off a true 4 game win streak, it will be the same story.

    38,

I agree with all the points except for the Gruden trade.

For what Al got in return, he COULD HAVE built a franchise.

TWO 1ST rounders and TWO 2nd rounders PLUS 8 million is cash, PLUS Callahan took the team farther than Gruden even could.

I think Al’s big snafu was not really getting anything for all those picks…THAT to me was the big goof up.

  42. DJ Johnny Says:

Some have also said that Al’s first big mistake was moving the team to LA, and his second mistake was moving them back.

And why did Woodson want to walk? Because of the dumpster fire Al was turning the franchise into.

Had we been a winner, Woodson never would have left. Besides, most people thought he was washed up at the time. I dont think many thought he would end up playing this long or at this high of a level.

  44. VanHeathen30 Says:

    Denver IS Beatable…
Peyton isn”t his old self, to much wobble on every pass and his eye are bigger than his arm.
Going to need a full 60 minutes and keep mistakes down…Don’t care how it gets done, as long as it’s done.
Might have to have a Killians for some of JFB’s mojo…

  45. Just Fire Baby Says:

I got my sixer already chilling for the game.

  46. Raider Riff Says:

    Manning’s balls always wobbled.

And his arm strength was never considered his asset. Its his brain. Which is working just fine.

    Dont underestimate this guy.

  47. DJ Johnny Says:

If u look at the pattern of moves that GB made while Reggie was there you see alot of “no names” that turn out to be good players but they also spend the money on big name players for key positions.

One, is cornerback with Woodson, the other is linebacker with Clay Mathews. They will pay the money to keep him.

Also, you look at GB picking up Reggie White, which really was the missing piece to get them to the SB…and win it.

Of course they paid Favre to stay all those yrs. too.

I really think if we look at the trends of GB since 94 you get a glimpse into what the Raiders will become.

DMAC doesn’t seem to fit into the ‘GB WAY’. They tend to treat RB as a position that is interchangeable. When’s the last time GB had a big time RB? Dorsey Levens?

Seymour is no Reggie White, nor is Des Bryant or Shonasty.

GB has also had the big fat guy at nose tackle..Pickett, the grave digger, etc.

  48. nyraider Says:

there are certain games that are defining moments of a season. this is one. if we win it will give us confidence that the first 2 losses were just growing pains and we are at a new level. A loss will not end the season but will put us in a big hole that may be too tough to dig out from.
In my eyes, this game is 90% on the players and 10% coaching staff. peyton will make plays and someone on our dunit has to rise up and make plays. IF our cbs sit back like they did in miami they will get chewed up and manning wont be like big ben and have a bad 4th quarter. Our strength on D comes from the lbs, im hoping this is the game wheeler becomes the leader of the unit .

Offensively, i lean toward cp3 being the qb that converted the last 6-7 3rd downs against pitt versus the 1-12 conversion rate against miami.I am hoping that he is motivated not intimidated by playing agains manning. I’m not as concerned as the injuries to our WR bc i feel many of them are overated in here and really only Dmoore has the potential to be a game changer. i’m very high on marcel and feel he has been underused and needs more touches. he is such a match up problem and his hands are as good as our WRs. look for a big day from marcel. Last but not least is the oline and dmac,.Dmac usually plays well against Denver and hoping last weeks positive performance translates into a big game on sunday.
Very nervous as Denver’s losses came against 2 super bowl contenders. However, we have enough talent to beat Denver and I’m hoping this is the week that defines our season in a positive way and not puts us back into the annual death spiral we’ve grown accustomed to over the years. Go Raiders!!

  49. Raider Riff Says:

They also had the great Gilbert Brown.

DMC might not fit the GB mold, but he does fit the once-in-a-long-while talent mold.

I dont see Reggie letting go of a home run threat like DMC. No way. The guy is just too dang good.

  50. morilla Says:

Anyone is beatable. Look at Brady and Breesey. Just hold the long ball, let them take the underneath stuff. I see a repeat of the Steeler game. Veldheer and Smith ( im becoming a big fan of Willie) are playing pretty good and their speed rushers will be kept in check. I think the TEs will have a big roll on Sunday.

  51. Just Fire Baby Says:

Peyton’s arm strength is so suspect, they were warming up Brock Osweiler to throw the hail mary if need be last week.

    Not the best sign.

  52. morilla Says:

Also excited to see Carter get some action. Love that clip on YouTube of him flattening Rivers.

  53. DJ Johnny Says:

I don’t mean to suggest Reggie will do things EXACTLY as they did in GB, but it is what he knows and is used to and they have had success.

Expect that we’ll always have a top flight player at QB, and that he’ll continue to bring in guys you’ve never heard of but can contribute.

Goodson fits more into “the GB way” than DMAC does, but it doesn’t mean Reggie doesn’t realize you have to take advantage of having a big time talent like that on your team.

  54. Just Fire Baby Says:

From Bill Simmons’ mailbag (I agree with the writer):

After years of hearing you criticize coaches who mismanage timeouts, waste challenges and screw up easy in-game scenarios, it’s time for you to recognize a new coach who has nailed it so far: Oakland’s Dennis Allen. (Yeah, the guy who looks like he’s a coach’s son, yep, that’s the coach.) In Sunday’s win over Pittsburgh Allen executed four things for which coaches deserve to be recognized. One: he’s limiting the Oakland penalties — just three for 25 yards against Pittsburgh. (Insert Raider conspiracy theory about regular refs not working this game here). Two: he held all three timeouts until crunch time. (It didn’t end up mattering, but still.) Three: He nailed a unique formation on fourth and one, inside the five, that forced the Steelers to jump offside for an automatic first down. Four: he called for a perfectly timed (although terribly executed) onside kick late in the game. As a Raider fan who sat through Lane Kiffin, Art Shell, Norv Turner, Bill Callahan, Hue Jackson and Tom the Cable Guy in recent years, I appreciate what Allen has been able to do thus far, especially penalty-wise. Consider this: Oakland is THIRD IN THE LEAGUE in fewest penalty yards per game!!!!

I agree. And Reggie knows you gotta spend money on certain postiions and players.

I don’t see the kicking game being one of them in the future.

Along that line of thought I think there’s a reason King is still on the team as well.

#26, don’t forget trading Jim Lachey for Jay Schroeder.

  61. Bob Marley Says:

Yeah, Al made a ton of bad moves-signings over the last decade, I guess he felt he was running out of time with so many people with ties to him dying, a lot of them younger than he was, the old man probably felt he had to take a shot every year, it’s too bad he never gdofathered a young executive to grow into his role, that would have been quite an ending to his storied career, you know getting a winning team under the guidance of his hand-picked apprentice.

But he also left this team with a Franchise Left Tackle and a potential Pro Bowl Caliber Center, a top-flight RB, the game’s most versatile FB, a quality WR unit (when healthy) with DHB, Moore and Ford, a surprisingly productive TE group, some talented DL to work with in Houston, Bryant and Shaughnessy, a Strong Safety that Reggie valued enough to slap the Franchise Tag on, then there’s McLain and Pryor, jury’s out on those two, could go either way.

And I know he left some bad contracts too, that’s where his win now approach comes in play, AD wasn’t thinking 3 years down the road, he could not afford to, all in all he left a solid foundation to work with, I’m sure Reggie will build on it and fill the roster out with his own quality players.

  62. Otis60 Says:

I agree Bob but the Lachey trade was in 1988 and I think the Raiders already had a very good QB in Steve Beuerlein. It is the one trade that gets my blood boiling.

  68. Seymour Bush Says:

Moving the team to LA was the worst decision Davis ever made. The team that left Oakland was the most successful, most unique, most feared, winningest franchise in all of sports. The one that limped back was a shell out it’s self with an entourage of makeup and gown wearing clowns and gang members. Not good.

    Chico,

DA is a good HC, but he made a few mistakes so far (IMO) which is normal for a rookie HC.
    1- Hiring Knapp & Tarver
Knapp’s resume is not impressive, and this team had/ has a good offense that can carry a team. Tarver is young/ talented but lacks NFL experience as DC. Our Defense is a mess, so I thought a quality vet DC was a better option (I wanted a guy like Del Rio).
    2- the LS situation.

Miami and San Diego are currently 3rd and 4th vs the run, Pitt is 15th but would be near the top 5 if not for McFadden’s big run messing their average last week, those were stiff tests and we could not get going, but Denver is not particularly stout vs the run, this is the game where we can get back into our groove.

The Broncos are ranked 13th vs the run, but looking past the numbers you can see their solid rank comes from weks 1 and 2 when they played Pitt and Atl, ranked 30th and 26th in rushing yards, those 2 teams do not feature strong running games, now week 3 they played Houston and were gashed for 152 yards on 34 carries, good for a 4.5 per average.

We brought the Houston running scheme with Frank Pollack and Grek Knapp, we’ll have tape on how to attack them and their MLB won’t play, we have produced the 3rd and 7th ranked rushing Offense the last 2 years, we have to get back to dominating the LOS.

Of course, the run won’t be any good if we get behind early, so a solid start from the Defense is the key to this game, IMO.

  74. Seymour Bush Says:

One issue I have is the Dungver defense is seeing basically the exact same offensive run scheme that they saw the week before. Knapp is going to have to do some things to change that up slightly and keep them off balance.

Yeah, the Lachey-Schroeder trade didn’ work out, but those Raider teams still made the playoffs and even an AFC championship game that I wish I could forget, of course you could argue that Schroeder’s up and down play was the main reason preventing us from getting to the Super Bowl.

By the way, here’s some insight on that trade from Wolf himself, he spoke about it before the Robert Gallery Draft in 2004.

“I can’t imagine Al letting Gallery go by,” says Ron Wolf, who spent 25 years in the Raiders’ personnel department.

Wolf will go down in history as one of the league’s great personnel men, but the move that still haunts him involved a Raiders left tackle, Jim Lachey, a future Pro Bowler.

“We traded him to the Redskins for Jay Schroeder … talk about really dumb moves,” Wolf says.

“And I was the guy who led the charge on that one. I don’t think Al will let another left tackle like him get away.”

Maybe Al should not have listened to Ron on this one.

Yeah, for whatever reason, in all issues on this blog, everything is a “either or” situation. Black and white. No grey area.

People have beliefs, and they will do anything to stick to them (see Knapp or CP3 issues)

And with Al Davis, people either want to worship him or vilify him. When the reality is he had his moments of brilliance (the majority of his early career) and then he started to lose it over time. That doesnt mean he was worthless at the end, he still left us with a lot of talent. He still had flashes of greatness left in him.

It’s not a black and white issue with Al. I just dont understand why most cant accept that.

But he is a much more Peyton Manning/Matt Ryan type QB than a Cam Newton/RGIII guy.

He won’t be doing any designed QB sweeps, or running the read-option in the NFL.

Lots of shotgun, spread the field, 15 yard lasers.

EVery young QB in the NFL can be a little mobile at times and break the pocket. Hell we saw Matt Stafford do it last year to us.

BS I say. What is he going to do, learn how to be an open-field runner in the NFL?

He is a pocket-passer, with great accuracy 25 yards and in, and that will be his paycheck maker.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I was hoping the new Owner & GM can convince him by offering him a good contract. He has experience as a HC, and he can help our defense and LBs.
Al didn’t like paying coaches a lot of money, and that’s why we had a lot of young coaches. He did well most of the time.

    ————————

I wanted Del Rio as well. He’s a good 4-3 guy and like you said, very good with LBs, of which going into the offseason we needed major work at.

But I also really like that we got a guy that can teach multiple sets. Like AZ used to use during their SuperBowl run. Pendergast was the coach then, I REALLY liked that guy and wish we had got him when Hue was here.

So I will settle with Tarver. I like him so far. I think he knows what he is doing.

    ^^^^^^^^
We need to see more mutiple sets versus Denver than we did versus Pitt, thats for sure. Playing a straight up base 4-3 package for most the game and showing that to Manning is dangerous. He will pick that predictable stuff apart.

On paper, we pick up a guy who had MORE sacks than WImbley…was a probowler (which Wimbley was not) and he’s supposedly 100%.

I guess the only wrench in this is that he is NOT 100%.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

We didn’t sign him the 1st time for a reason. It could be health issues, contract/ money, or he didn’t have a good workout.
We are desperate now so who knows? Our DL can’t get to the QB, and our CB situation is not helping.

One other note on Tarver and the staff in general is that this entire crew was put together with the intentions that everyone is fairly new and built for long term.

I fear Del Rio is just waiting for his next head coaching chance.

Everything about Denver says short term. Manning is 36 and they gave all that money…and he can’t even throw the real deep ball.

Del Rio is waiting for his next gig, McGahee is getting old, Champ Bailey is on his last legs…They do have Von Miller and Mays who are young but this team looks like they are just rolling the dice and hoping for a SB this..or next yr. and then will have to rebuild.

If Manning goes down, they have Caleb freaking Hanie.

As far as the Denver game, we should be able to run on them, it’s been 3 games now and we’re starting the same group from last week, it must start clicking now.

    ===============

Broncos are ranked 13th overall vs the run -minus Joe Mays makes them 20th-ish vs. the run. Oh yeah…and no DJ Williams!

    ==============

Haha word. People pretend that Palmer is making up plays on the spot.

Scheme worked well in Pittsburgh. Let’s see if the Raiders can do it again. Interior line play still needs to improve. The receivers are going to have to deal with Champ Bailey and Tracy Porter, and they’re going to need to prove they can consistently separate.

I expect the secondary to struggle again. Roethelisberger is a whole lot more mobile than Manning, so there’s a chance the Raiders will be a little more successful in terms of bringing pressure (especially if Carter is healthy/active). But because of Manning’s quick release, the Raider defense is going to have to make some plays in man coverage and disrupt the timing of the offense.

Palmer is not making up the plays. He is just checking out of Knapps chitty plays and calling the right plays from within the playbook or using some plays from last years playbook.

Sullivan44, just a tad bit condescending. You come into this the blog talking your sh!t about kool aid drinkers. You take this game way to seriously.I don’t care about your analysis of this team. Win or lose I don’t give a funk, because I am a grown man.

    Are you 40?

We will begin to see Palmer and Dmac fazing out knapps playbook and inserting more plays that work from the previous year. Look for a lot of audibles, PBS and vertical plays. Just a matter of time.

According to the HC. Nope, aint gonna happen.

This is not the Raiders’ week. They’re up against one of the greatest QB’s in NFL history whose career is on the line.

  212. Custom Raider Says:

knapp apologists got to realize we should be 3-0 if if the propper half time adjustments were made vs SD and miami. How many horizontal passes were thrown for -2 yards? We don’t have the personel for WCO and even if we did, defenses are onto it. Bill Walsh took it to a great level before teams figured it out. But all that sh*ts gonna be history. Palmer. Dmac and DMoore are gonna see to that.

Funny how knapp said he consulted with Pamer and Dmac prior to the game vs pitt and then some think that is the norm. With good planners, of course thats the norm. So why did knapp even point it out? Season and some jobs on the line tomorrow.

  213. Albert Bigelow Paine Says:

This game is all about Veldheer and Willie Smith against Dumervill and Von Miller.

    ___________________

yup. it’s about blocking for CP3 and even more importantly, DMC. Miller struggles stopping the run(at times), and it’s the same thing with Dumb’ervil … getting 3 TE sets to clear the path is essential.

Torrie Smith needs to do what he did last game, and even more for McFadden, then we’re in the butter zone, as Palmer will have a balanced attack to work with.

Dude, if huff were playing anywhere else i might agree, but in the thin air up at broncos, he should be able to jump higher to knock down passes. and i’m not so sure if we can chase manning around a bit Manning will be not sucking wind.

    **********************************

SD and miami. What I would change would be to let CP3 call his own game. Sure he has to use knapps playbook but CP3 has a better feel for the game than knapp. knapp gets the calls in to slow, doesn’t give Palmer enough time at the LOS. SD game was brutal, and I dont buy the line that they were still learning the system. Palmer generates a much more up tempo game, a must, when he goes no huddle. And he is good at it.

  238. KoolKell Says:

Rolando McClain is a pretty good blitzer up the middle. Seems like good medicine to me.

  239. Just Win Baby Says:

The thin air in Denver does not affect gravity. Huff wont be jumping any higher. It will, however affect the efffect wind drag has on an object, so Mannings wobbly passes will travel farther in Denver before Huff intercepts one than they will in Oakland.

  240. YoungAmerican Says:

Not all the damn plays in knapps book are exclusive to ZBS/WCO crap. com’on man, Palmer can audible out of a play anytime he wants with a ton of other plays he’s got. they dont scratch them in the dirt during huddle. really now. and knapps play calling still sucks. ============================

Again – why are the ZBS and WCO crap when several teams run them successfully?

And why does Knapp suck when the plays Palmer audibles to are plays from Knapp’s playbook? Don’t OCs WANT their start QB to read the defense and make changes? Doesn’t it speak more to Palmer’s grasp of Knapp’s playbook more than anything about Knapp’s playcalling? When Peyton or Ryan or Brady make adjustments at the line, as they frequently do, does that mean their OC sucks?

Manning ain’t making it out of the first quarter. Shaughnassy is going to bury that dude. From his blindside.

  244. Just Win Baby Says:

You guys are listening to too many TV guys. Ex Broncos and guys like Dungy, Mannings old coach, who are still loyal to the brand. I’ve seen every snap Manning has played this season. He isn’t the same. Denver is losing because of poor QB play from the most cerebral QB of this generation. He isn’t losing because he suddenly got stupid. His physical skills are deteriorating. He’s still dangerous, but he isn’t the qb he once was. We will get some picks on Sunday.
