DHB, Gordon downgraded to `out’

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, September 29th, 2012 at 1:40 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders downgraded wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (concussion) and tight end Richard Gordon (hamstring) to out Saturday, meaning neither will play against the Denver Broncos.

It’s not surprise Heyward-Bey won’t be playing, given that as of Friday he hadn’t passed any of his concussion tests and the severity of the blow he took from Pittsburgh’s Ryan Mundy.

Gordon’s absence will be felt in that the Raiders use a lot of packages with three tight ends and now will have only two _ Brandon Myers and David Ausberry _ active.

Gordon is also a core special teams player and leads the Raiders with four special teams tackles.

The Denver Broncos announced the promotion of Duke Ihenacho and Mike Mohammad from the practice squad. Ihenacho, a safety from San Jose State, is the brother of Carl Ihenacho, who recently went in other direction _ from 53-man roster to practice squad. Mohammad is the former Cal standout.

Not all the damn plays in knapps book are exclusive to ZBS/WCO crap. com’on man, Palmer can audible out of a play anytime he wants with a ton of other plays he’s got. they dont scratch them in the dirt during huddle. really now. and knapps play calling still sucks. Palmer and Dmac need to lead the show in order for us to have any chance of winning.

    ============================

Again – why are the ZBS and WCO crap when several teams run them successfully?

And why does Knapp suck when the plays Palmer audibles to are plays from Knapp’s playbook? Don’t OCs WANT their start QB to read the defense and make changes? Doesn’t it speak more to Palmer’s grasp of Knapp’s playbook more than anything about Knapp’s playcalling? When Peyton or Ryan or Brady make adjustments at the line, as they frequently do, does that mean their OC sucks?

Using the no-huddle is by design. When teams go no-huddle, they’re not just winging it. They’re implementing a package designed for those specific situations.

The lack of football some people here have is astounding.

    ***********************************

As long as knapp can get the play into the huddle so Palmer has a chance to change it at the LOS, then it is what it is. knapps playbook is here for now, that I understand. I just think it is poor in desingn. Not built to personel strengths. Just cuz something works in one place doesn’t mean it works here.

No argument there, but you were saying the WCO and ZBS were crap, and that isn’t accurate.

I’m not sure DHB and Moore are good fits for the West Coast offense either, but the timing of the offense seemed much improved last week. So I’m just going to watch the game tomorrow and see if they continue to improve in this offense. The playcalling hasn’t been perfect, but the execution hasn’t been either. Drops, falling down on routes, sub-par protection and run blocking. Adjustments need to be made on both sides of the equation.

You guys are listening to too many TV guys. Ex Broncos and guys like Dungy, Mannings old coach, who are still loyal to the brand. I’ve seen every snap Manning has played this season. He isn’t the same. Denver is losing because of poor QB play from the most cerebral QB of this generation. He isn’t losing because he suddenly got stupid. His physical skills are deteriorating. He’s still dangerous, but he isn’t the qb he once was. We will get some picks on Sunday.

    ************************************
As far as I can recall Walsh’s Whiners of the eighties were the only successful pure WCO/ZBS :Success being measured by Lombardi’s collected.Others have run variants/hybrids of the thing with good results also.
Why it sucks is 1.the large number of leg injuries due to the cut blocking 2.that owners do it to save money.Pay top cap dollar to Stud Defensive guys and get a bunch of lighter(read cheaper) guys who would not be competitive in the Drive Blocking schemes that the game was designed around. Many offshoots come to mind.Too many teams = not enough talent to fill 32
    OLines with backups etc.
Stud Defenders with large contracts rehabing a knee
ankle for a year then another year playing to get back
to the top level.(Shonasty will be back to speed next year if he doesn’t cop another this year).
Thing should be illegal but the owners won’t allow it.
The Cap was designed by the owners to protect themselves from themselves and the result is a huge IR.
A Dime taking out a $20 bill for two years sucks.
I could go on but you get my drift.

Yeah, Al made a ton of bad moves-signings over the last decade, I guess he felt he was running out of time with so many people with ties to him dying, a lot of them younger than he was, the old man probably felt he had to take a shot every year, it’s too bad he never gdofathered a young executive to grow into his role, that would have been quite an ending to his storied career, you know getting a winning team under the guidance of his hand-picked apprentice.

But he also left this team with a Franchise Left Tackle and a potential Pro Bowl Caliber Center, a top-flight RB, the game’s most versatile FB, a quality WR unit (when healthy) with DHB, Moore and Ford, a surprisingly productive TE group, some talented DL to work with in Houston, Bryant and Shaughnessy, a Strong Safety that Reggie valued enough to slap the Franchise Tag on, then there’s McLain and Pryor, jury’s out on those two, could go either way.

And I know he left some bad contracts too, that’s where his win now approach comes in play, AD wasn’t thinking 3 years down the road, he could not afford to, all in all he left a solid foundation to work with, I’m sure Reggie will build on it and fill the roster out with his own quality players.

  69. Sullivan44 Says:

Still a huge presence of military contractors in Iraq, where the current administration tried at the 11th hour to extend the withdrawal deadline. Will be the same case in Afghanistan – two wars that were the direct result of years of a disastrous US foreign policy.

Now our drone war wages in Yemen, Pakistan, Libya, and Syria. We have troops headed to Sudan, and Iran is next – no matter who the president is.

Moreover, in Libya the US once again funded a violent militant faction to overthrow a leader we disapprove of – and it has already led to mass executions and countless civilian deaths. This is the same mistake the US funded and helped train the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, and we all saw how that one turned out.

You’re making a lot of assumptions, but, on the other hand the Arab Spring has begotten Democratically elected governments.

Democracy works, or else I’d still be in the coloured only line.

    ================

The only assumption there is that the US will go to war with Iran. And I’m assuming that because the candidates for both major parties have endorsed war as the solution to Iran’s quest for a viable nuclear program.

The thing to remember about democracy is how long it took us to develop it. It took over a century for our leaders to form the basic tenets of this system. From there, it took another century for us to recognize blacks as full-fledged human beings. It took us another 60+ years to given women the right to vote. It took another 40 years for our government to acknowledge that separate but equal is not, in fact, equal. And even now we still struggle with providing equal rights and equal opportunity for every American.

So why, exactly, do we think a foreign policy that involves bombing developing nations into submission will help us deliver the gift of democracy? How could that possibly be effective?

Is the hubris of the US government so great that we truly believe we can just swoop in and turn a country into a shining little America Jr. in the course of a few years? Or is it more likely that endless war profits the corporate benefactors who have bought our elected officials? I tend to learn towards the latter.

Palmer and Dmac need to lead the show in order for us to have any chance of winning.

    Syria/Yemen, what?

    ================

You seriously have no idea about the drone war in Syria and Yemen?

The revolution in Libya was aided both materially and strategically by the US government. Conducted a thorough bombing campaign, and armed an anti-Gaddhafi militant faction (who are now conducting mass-executions of anyone suspected of being loyal to either Gaddhafi’s regime or another faction).

Iraq – the current administration was fighting to keep a large military presence there beyond the deadline. Iraq didn’t let us because of leaked cables that revealed widespread indifference to civilian casualties within the country. Now there’s just a large contingent of civilian contractors in Iraq, as well as thousands of US personnel. By the way, the “suspicious reasons” you mentioned? Well the current administration just refused to investigate the prior administration’s blatant war crimes.

Afghanistan – a conflict caused by the US arming, training, then turning their back on the Mujahideen after their war against the Soviets. A never-ending war which is impossible to win, and it’s just getting worse. But guaranteed, the US will still keep personnel stationed there long after 2014, because that’s what the US does (and then we wonder why “they hate us for our freedom”).

Pakistan – a country whose military intelligence program we continue to fund since they’re an “ally”, yet we also feel the need to conduct drone strikes within their border on a regular basis. Crooked US puppet leaders over the years have steadily increased anti-American sentiment in Pakistan, and the illegal drone campaign we’re waging certainly doesn’t help.

Pressure Manning all day, he may be past his prime but he’s still elite. If we give him time, he will carve us up. And as much as I dislike knapp, his offense put up 34 last week and you won’t hear me complain about that, we need to keep it going and mix it up. To see the guys play the way they played, how hard they fought, how physical they were, to match what they were trying to do across the field. That’s a tribute to them.

Elite QB’s do not forget how to play because of bad injury layoff’s.They just get too old and 32 does not qualify as too old nor does 36 for that matter.
They put the Jugg’s gun on CP against the Bolts and
he constantly hit 47 mph with accuracy whilst running for his life. He’s lost a whole 3 mph off his fastball
since he was 22 years old!

If we can improve on last weeks performance many in here will finally enjoy the red hot knapple! I wasn’t in to the hire either but come on, he’s not that bad.

Agreed, we MUST stop the run because we CAN’T stop the pass. I would like to see us get more pressure on opposing qbs. Maybe the addition of Carter will help that cause. Gotta admit im worried about the game in ATL, Ryan, White and Jones are licking their chops. We really need to take the extra time before that game to come up with an answer for the air attack that we are sure to see from them.

  216. Twinkle Says:

If CP Manages the short game this week like I believe he will…..4 yards and a cloud of dust…..We wont need to be concerned about the D…..they’ll be over there on the pines waving at PM and crew who’ll be doing the same thing on the other sideline.

Manning is still elite, but he can be had, this isnt Indy’s Peyton, I have a ton of respect for him and the way he plays the game. That being said, he’s a Donkey now. I want to see him get smacked around like never before. Pressure has always beat manning, the recipe for success hasn’t changed. Pressure, pressure, and more pressure. Like Twinkle said, CP3 and co. has to keep him on the bench and I want to see the D keep him picking himself up off the turf. I know we can win this game.

But I don’t see the Broncos letting themselves start off the Manning era at 1-3. They’re going to play the football game of a lifetime tomorrow. We just won, and you know how the Raiders get when they come off a win. Team’s probably still celebrating. It’s takes a while to develop the discipline needed to build on wins in this league. We’ve got a little ways to go.

  225. VaRaiderNation Says:

    Broncos must win.

  227. VaRaiderNation Says:

I think Manning throws all over the field just like Ben did, it’s a matter of outscoring our opponent and creating turnovers just like last sunday. It can be done, and I think it will be. Denver is a second home-field for us. Look for DMAC to have an outstanding performance against that depleted defense. Their pass rushers will be coming har, setting us up for an old knapp favorite…screens to dmac and moore, and halfback delays.

  228. Twinkle Says:

I disagree regarding PM.It takes about 2 years to get back too speed after a major injury achilles…ACL…
MCL etc.How long for 4 major neck surgeries? including
vertebrae fusion.Effects his accuracy and speed. He’ll
get there because he’s driven. He was #1 forever and thats where he’s intent on being again.CP will be right there with him.
But for right now as VaRaiderNation says…he can be had.
I want to see him on the sideline all day long waiting and waiting and waiting while watching his D get really tired.

    ^^^^^^^^
Yeah, Palmer is just being a better play caller than the guy was hired to be a play caller is doing.

Knapp sucks….Palmer needs to change the plays and run the no huddle as much as possible. Keep the play calling duties out of Knapps hands.

Palmer changing Knapps play calls at the line is great!

  265. Just Fire Baby Says:

When Palmer changes a play, like he explained on the Darren long TD run, it is the same play just run to the opposite side as originally called, due to defensive alignment.

Also, a good chunk of those pre-snap shenanigans, or just that shenanagins. All BS, to confuse the D.

yes but, when the person calling the plays, which would be CP3 in this case, changes the play call to power blocking run plays and deeper throws to guys like Moore, it resembles that of last year’s offense more than Knapp’s version of the WCO.

a healthy mixture of Knapp’s dink and dunk offense and CP3’s down field plays will keep this donko defense on their heals, especially with such luckluster linebackers they will be rolling with. we should exploit all the open spots in the flat that they’ll surely give up.

truth is, we suck in games coming off a win(even in the Madden days, as he said himself) … but we also play out of our minds against the Donkeys in Mule Stadium way up on that mountain. this should be a close game no matter what happens.

    ok JFB,

yes his down field PASSING plays. we saw more of them last Sunday vs the previous two games. you think it was a coincidence that we also saw more of a command of the offense from Carson in the same game?

you can think whatever you want there kid-o, but Knapp has never proven to be a good play caller. why do you think he was a QB coach for the last 2 years instead of being an OC? diamond in the rough? was he good in SEA? LMAO

i would like to see the man succeed with CP3 at the helm. trust me on that one. i am pulling for the guy and this razor thin list of WR’s we are trotting out there tomorrow.

i only said i wanted to see a mix of the two, rather than his dink and dunk all day that was plain and vanilla the first two weeks, which resulted in two azz whoopins.

    Ahem

    ____________

you are correct, it’s Knapp’s playbook.
the difference is, they’re more plays over 20 yards that Carson is choosing out of it, versus weeks 1 and 2, where it was out of the backfield or 4 yard outs all day, which resulted in stinksville, USA… i believe that’s Palmer’s doing.

we saw Carson take command of the offense against the Squeelers. he saw something in the defense and exploited with an audible at the line. that’s just apart of getting to know the offense you’ve been studying for what, 8 months now?

what i’m worried about is this zone blocking scheme up front with DMC. he can’t seem to eat up 10 yards as easily as he would with a PBS up front.

i realize that it’s the popular way of bashing Knapp’s play calling, but if DMC is lack luster or is kept short of 100 yards in the next games to come, it’s hard not to blame the system he’s in. why fix what wasn’t broken last year?!

in the end, i guess it’s hard to talk about any of this until a few weeks down the road.. we’ll see then i guess.

truth is, Knapp has failed everywhere he’s been, except maybe as a QB coach for Schaub the last two years.

In 2008 the Knapp led Raiders had a 23-8 win over KC in week 2 before going 1-4 in the next 5 games with Knapp’s reign as playcaller ending during a 24-0 loss to Atlanta in Week 9 (Raiders had bye in week 5).

    1 win doesn’t prove anything yet…

  357. SinisterKoala Says:

Pay attention, Ark, because you are confused on what’s going on here.
OF COURSE EVERY SINGLE PLAY THAT IS EVER RUN, ALL YEAR LONG, ON EVERY SINGLE TEAM, IN THE LEAGUE, IS A PLAY PUT IN BY THE OC.
NO QB EVER HAS CALLED A PLAY THAT WAS ‘HIS’ PLAY, AND NOT ONE PUT IN BY THE OC/TEAM, AND WAS INSTEAD A PLAY THE QB “DESIGNED”, and is now going to run it.

OC’s become good/great not because of a play he designs, it’s because he calls the plays at the right time.

    You really needed that explained?

Derek has really taken to the offense pretty well — Hagan. This week, the last two days, we’ve had very good practices with the young guys (Streater and fellow rookie Juron Criner), but they are still young guys and I hate to put the burden on a rookie receiver if we don’t have to,” Knapp said, via the Sacramento Bee. “You’ll probably see a rotation with all four of them playing some sort. I’ve been very impressed with Derek and how quickly he’s learned the offense.”

For what it’s worth, here’s my take.

The issue I have with Knapp is not his play design, I’m sure he can draw up some good-looking plays and they probably work in practice too.

My issue is that come gameday, he has a tendency to become tentative and too conservative, seems like he relies too much on players gaining the tough yards rather than attacking the Defense with passing plays that net us 1st downs or travel at least 10-15 yards.

In other words, he seems to settle a bit too much on taking what the Defense gives him instead of challenging the opponent and forcing them out of their comfort zone.

Like I said before, play-calling is an art, it’s not just drawing up plays that look good in the classroom, it’s knowing what to call on certain situations, it’s getting the Offense in rythm and keeping the opponent guessing, jury is still out on Knapp as his career shows.

Now I gave him credit after the Pitt win, the Offense looked a lot more efective, even with the running game still struggling, and while Palmer took more control of the Offense as Richard Gordon said: “We played through Carson’s head”, it was still Knapp’s playbook and Knapp’s decision to allow Palmer more freedom, good coaches make adjustments and it looks like Knapp did.

Now if he can get the running game going things will get easier and big plays should follow, at least in theory.

So, while I still question his hiring and believe he’s on a short leash, I still have hope he can balance things out and evolve into a productive OC for us, I’m rooting for him because it’s nothing personal, if he does well, the Raiders do well and that’s all it matters.

Good article Thec, pretty much what every non-biased person was saying.

Knapp calls a few plays, Carson gets to move from one or other due to what he and Knapp studied during the week.

  418. Bob Marley Says:

Or maybe it was an honest mistake….

  419. Just Fire Baby Says:

So 16 in 13 total starts, about 1 a game.

And we have attempted 4 less than the Bronco’s this year, about 1 less a game.

We are talking about the most miniscule of differences per game, a play or two at best.

  420. Just Fire Baby Says:

Wasn’t a mistake, talking about this year.

People said we “opened up the playbook” last week (people even thinking it was Al Saunders LMAO) to stretch the field. Yet, we didn’t even complete a pass of that type.

0-9 on those types of plays tells me, why on earth would an OC try to put MORE of that stuff into the gameplan?

    Valid question, no?

  422. Just Fire Baby Says:

Absolutely, because you can’t just eliminate it from the playcalls.

But to think we should try it MORE moving forward, is a tough sell.

  423. Just Fire Baby Says:

The biggest play last week was the Hagan catch and run on the last drive, on a pass that traveled maybe 3 yards down the field.

Agree on Moore; Ford has proven to not be reliable week-to-week.

We will complete some of those passes and improve on it thoughout the year, but I thought being 0-9 on plays that SO MANY people have been crying for on here was kind of funny.

Also to be fair, look at the INT’s thrown last year to so far this year.

I think there is correlation there.

    Some of it, sure.

But when I watch the NFL, I see a majority of 3rd down throws go short of the sticks, but they try to get it to a reciever in motion, so he can pick up the extra 2-5 yards after the catch.

Agree, that throwing a 1 yard pass to Myers with his back to the defense on 3rd and 3 is not a good option.

I think we..more importantly the Raiders…would be making a big mistake if we start thinking Manning has lost ANYTHING.

We CAN win this game today, but I can see why everyone thinks we won’t.

It’s hard for anyone to imagine Peyton losing at home and going 1-3. The teams they lost to are SB contenders. We however lost to Miami and SD.

The hope is we are better than what we were at Miami and have “turned a corner” of sorts, but there has been no corner turned in terms of our pass defense, and today we face one of the best QB’s in NFL history…at his home stadium…with his back against the wall.

I’m surprised the “experts” are picking us to even keep it close.

All this, is what will make this victory all the more sweeter if we can pull it off.

I remember the old sign at the OCO “Go Get ‘Em Raiders”…

This will be HUUUUUUUGE if we cna pull this off.

Agreed. Both teams NEED this game. Who wants it more? NEVER underestimate Peyton Manning, and I don’t think anyone in the Nation is doing that. But you got it right, WE CAN WIN THIS GAME. We can get this done, we know we have no secondary, my biggest concern is can our D get pressure on Manning? If yes then this game is ours.

    …….

    You in SD?
    ———

Yeah, live about 5 minutes from Qualcom. You are here too right?

    ……..

    Chula vista, eastlake…

  533. Thec Says:

Kc is playing handicapped with castle…. F that guy.

  534. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

I liked Cappy coming out of UNR, has a rocket arm.

You would think the Jets would be prepared for the rinky-dink offense, with Tebow on their sidelines.
    ====================================================
Kapernick has all the tools to excel on Sunday. He’s in an ideal situation in SF and should eventually surplant Smith.

Wonder if TP will even be active today ?

Someone tell Krapp it might be a good idea to activate TP and show some of that ‘rinky-dink’ offense (worked pretty well on the 17 yd run and TD later).

A little creative thinking can’t hurt.

At the very least it would give opposing defenses something else to think about and prepare for.

Guess it makes more sense to keep TP in street clothes and continue to go with Matt Lice as the backup even though there’s no long term percentage in that.

Krapp is so dense that it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Raids with a 2-6 record and TP still inactive on Sundays.

Actually shouldn’t blame Krapp for that if it happens. That would really be an indictment of DA.

    Mules 27
    Raids 20

Hope I’m wrong and we’re talking about a Raid victory later.

Off to the book. Good day, gents.

I think Jano breaks the record today except I think he nails one from 66 out!!

  536. Just Win Baby Says:

I hope Janikowski doesn’t have to kick anything but extra points today.

  537. MistaBrown Says:

Sexy Rexy has ran his course as a HC. He has that team going nowhere and fast. Back to being a DC, thats all you are big guy, deal with it.

  538. MistaBrown Says:

Palmer is locked in and in a rhythm there’s no need to fix what aint broke. Pryor needs to keep learning and growing. Fk Kapernick and the 9ers and what they do!

Thanks for your input now go sit down.
