Grading the Raiders from Sunday’s loss to Broncos

By Steve Corkran
Monday, October 1st, 2012 at 12:44 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Here’s how the Raiders graded out in Sunday’s 37-6 loss to the Denver Broncos, according to beat writer Jerry McDonald:

Pass offense

Carson Palmer (19 of 34, 204 yards) did some good things early on but found himself increasingly under pressure as the Broncos expanded their lead and couldn’t convert in the red zone. Threw his best deep ball of the season — a 37-yard sideline strike to Denarius Moore and a couple of nice screens. Grade: C-plus

Rush offense

Darren McFadden gained 15 yards on his first three carries, a promising start that went nowhere. He finished with 34 yards on 13 carries. The longest gain went to Mike Goodson on a 13-yard run. The Raiders needed to run to keep Denver’ s pass rush at bay and failed. Grade: F

Pass defense

Target practice, fish in a barrel, pitch-and-catch, use any descriptive clichés you want and that’s what Peyton Manning did to the Raiders defense. He completed 30 of 38 passes to eight different receivers for 338 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, had zero pressure. It all looked so easy. Grade: F

Run defense

Denver’s no-huddle offense set a tempo the Raiders simply couldn’t match, and it showed up in the Broncos running game, which got progressively better as the game went on. Willis McGahee gained 119 yards on 19 carries and Ronnie Hillman, who had just eight yards on three touches coming in, had 31 yards on 10 attempts. Grade: D-minus

Special teams

A deflected punt by David Bruton, who got far enough inside Brandon Myers and made a perfectly timed leap, led to a short field Denver touchdown. Taiwan Jones had two nice stops on punt returns of Jim Leonhard but later got a face mask penalty. Punt returns? That would mean the Broncos actually punted. They didn’t. Grade C-minus

Coaching

The Raiders had all the reason in the world to come out in the second half ready to play, trailing just 10-6 when it could have been 20-3 and unraveled. Three-and-outs followed by Denver touchdowns. Sorry, but can’t agree with Dennis Allen’s “compete until the end” stance with Carson Palmer. He needed the hook for his health. Grade: F

We have far too many areas of concern for drafting a QB. Simple as that. No QB in the nation should be drafted. Each year a “franchise” QB comes along. I’m cool with waiting for teddy bridgwater if you want the brother, or Sean Mannion if you want the white guy. Or which ever “franchise” qb comes along between here and then. Top 3 pick should be used to acquire more picks, or snag the unquestioned best Pass Rusher or Shutdown corner.

    =============

Can’t draft for need. Have to take the best player available.

If you draft for need and the pick busts? Not only did you not fill that need, but you didn’t get a player who can be a long-term asset for your team.

I get it bro, you have a man crush on the numbers and Geno. But winning teams do in fact draft for need. Teams that pick in the top 3 often aren’t the better for it, and end up right back in the top 5. Regardless, given our fortunes with top 5 picks, do you really even want to risk it on a Big 12 QB? I admit it’s early so I’m not sold on him, we’ll see how he does against Texas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, TCU, then I’ll have a better idea but even then, still NO QB! Trade down, select players, and ideally acquire starters via free agency.

    =======================

Nothing about the numbers, although those numbers are exactly what you’d expect a top prospect to put up against lesser competition. It has everything to do with his short and intermediate accuracy, his solid footwork and mobility inside the pocket, his ability and willingness to take hits in order to deliver the ball, and his ability to fit the ball into tight windows. Those are the things that have, thus far, made Geno Smith the best player in college football. Of course the evaluation process isn’t over – teams will want to see what he can do against top defenses – but if he keeps performing the way he has been, then he’ll very possibly be the first player picked in the draft, and certainly won’t fall out of the top 3.

What do you mean “our fortunes with Top 5 picks”? It’s a completely new regime. The Raiders’ draft history has nothing to do with it. It’s a shame that many Raiders fans have been conditioned to fear the draft, because that’s how you improve your team, and set them up for long-term success. This isn’t the NBA – you can’t just go out and buy a bunch of big-name players in free agency and just expect to win. If that was the case the Eagles would have gone the distance last season, and the Buccaneers would be dominating this season.

Teams DO draft for need – but mostly you see that out of teams who are perennial basement-dwellers. When the Giants picked Pierre-Paul, did they need a DE? Nope. They had Tuck and Osi. But they took the best player on the board, and it paid off. That’s how good teams stay good – by filling their roster with good players, not by saying “we need X, so we’re drafting X no matter what”. They only time it makes sense to draft for need is when your team has virtually every other position set for years. Few teams ever find themselves in that position, and the Raiders are certainly not in that position.

I dont want the head coach of my team laughing it up with the opposing head coach who just stomped your face in. DA is not a Raider. Hes not going to save this organization. He will not have a winning season here, and very well may not make past this season. He just doesnt have it. Its bad enough he chose Knapp as his OC, and he will have to sink with that decision. But as a lifelong Raiders fan, and understanding the significance of AFC West Rivals, I can honestly say through all the years of losing, I have never been as sickened by any of our head coach’s actions as I was by DA’s display with Fox yesterday. DA gets zero support from me, here on out. I’ll watch the games to see some football, and support players that I have been following, but this staff is beyond WEAK. Top to bottom.

For real, though, he’s gotta start working in some quicker hitting plays for the sake of the OL. Carlisle, Wisniewski and Brisiel are having a hard time getting to the second level. And both tackles were struggling with Von Miller yesterday. He was shedding blocks all over the place.

He’s the reason the Raiders don’t need Cartwright. But they could do better in terms of a #3 RB.

There is some truth to that but in reality if we were picking number 2 and the best RB to come out of college since OJ Simpson was sitting there why would we pick him with McFadden on our roster?

This does not hold true of every pick just some.

Last year, Koetter was let go by the Jaguars because their offense was terrible for the last few years.

In Atlanta, Koetter has TALENT, has drastically improved their O, and is now considered an elite OC..
    ————————————————
Yes, and this year, Knapp has managed to do the opposite of Koetter. He turned a unit that performed decent to very good last year, and made them the worst in the league.

Main difference between Koetter and Knapp, is that Koetter actually HAS had success in the league. The whole staff in Jacksonville had to go last year, and blame for them being horrible was not on Koetter, based on everything I remember from last season with the Jags. What the consensus about Koetter has been is that he has been a good OC, turned Jacksonvilles Offense around when he got their a few years ago, and is often credited with grooming David Garrard for his successful years. Cant say Ive heard any of the same ever said for Knapp. Numbers dont lie, Knapp led offenses have regressed by year everywhere he has been hired as OC. Falcons fans in the know were actually excited at the prospect of Matt Ryan working with Koettner, and by the looks of things, its already paying off. I dont recall many Raiders fans excited about Knapp being hired in the offseason, and he is proving why.

Id take Koetter over Knapp ANY DAY. Their resumes and pedigrees are not even in the same arena.

If we lose to atl there will be no reason for keeping him in street clothes.

The season is already lost, nobody makes the playoffs after 1-3 and 2 division losses, especially not this team.

  101. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

It seems strange to think of it now, in the midst of so much wreckage, but if you could time-travel back to Sunday morning, you might have had some actual optimism about the Raiders.

They were coming off a 34-31 win over the Steelers. The Broncos had taken back-to-back losses, and the newest instantaneous analysis of Peyton Manning was that he had lost the zip on his passes and might not again be the same Manning. The Raiders hadn’t lost at whatever-corporate-name is slapped on Mile High Stadium since Lane Kiffin’s brief, disastrous reign.

And the Raiders now have Dennis Allen, who was the Broncos’ defensive coordinator just a year ago. Surely, the bright young head coach would have some tricks up his sleeve for his old team.

But optimism is a short-lived commodity when it comes to the Raiders. Every step forward seems to be accompanied by several steps back.

Sunday was a big, big step back. As bad as the loss at Miami. As bad as anything offered in the past several years of mediocre football. The 37-6 loss to Denver was the Raiders’ worst loss to the Broncos since 1962. The year before Al Davis joined the team.

“It was an old-fashioned butt-whipping,” Carson Palmer said.

    His coach agreed.

“They out-coached us, they outplayed us, they beat us in every phase of the game,” Allen said.

That about covers it. The Raiders are 1-3 and have appeared inept on the road. They won’t lose next weekend – they have a bye. But then they hit the road again, to play red-hot Atlanta. Good luck finding any optimism heading into that game.

The Raiders are in rebuilding mode, but that’s frustrating for fans to hear when the rebuilding just goes on and on and on. Consecutive seasons of 8-8 records should be something on which to build, not cause for another restart. Especially when so many players on the Raiders – the starting quarterback, running back, the defensive front – are supposed to be ready for winning right now.

The Raiders, almost exactly one year after Davis’ death, have no identity. They have things they haven’t had before, like a powerful general manager, a head coach with job security and a brand-new media guide full of actual information.

But they don’t have a personality or – to the naked eye – a clear direction. They’re not strange or dysfunctional, but they’re simply not very interesting, either. Not when they play as they did Sunday.

After a relatively competitive first half, the Raiders simply disappeared at halftime. The collapse – which resulted in a 21-point third quarter – was on both offense and defense. Defense is supposed to be Allen’s strength, but the Raiders look as bad on defense as they did last year. Their secondary is makeshift following the decision to shed all of last year’s starters and subsequent injuries to their replacements.

And the defensive front – theoretically the best unit on the Raiders – couldn’t touch Manning. Sure, Manning runs the no-huddle, gets rid of the ball quickly and likes the short passing game. Yes, he’s hard to sack. But this is the NFL. No pressure? Zero quarterback hits? Especially after the Broncos lost their starting center to injury?

On Sunday, Manning – who passed for 338 yards and three touchdowns – was barely bothered. He looked every bit like the Hall of Fame quarterback that Denver was promised.

“We didn’t help the cause either,” said defensive lineman Richard Seymour, who has faced Manning forever. “He did what he needed to do to win.”

Seymour insisted, “One game won’t define us.” And that’s fair. But what about two games? Both on the road, both coming with the stench of inevitability and ready-made excuses about heat and altitude?

On offense, the Raiders were equally ineffective. Darren McFadden was neutralized, once again, rushing for 34 yards on 13 carries on the same field where he had amassed 315 yards in his previous two visits. Take away his one lightning-bolt moment – his 64-yard touchdown run against Pittsburgh – and the Raiders’ most dynamic player is having a terrible season. Yet he’s healthy.

Palmer played pretty well – standing up in the face of intense pressure to complete some passes. Still, the Raiders converted only one third down – of 12 opportunities, an 8 percent rate (compared with Manning who was 10-of-16 on third down).

“Third-and-longs killed us,” Palmer said. “We’re putting our coach – coach Knapp – in a tough situation. There aren’t many good calls on 3rd-and-long.”

Funny that Palmer should bring up offensive coordinator Greg Knapp. The quarterback must realize that Raider Nation has focused its wrath on Knapp, with some legitimate reason. The offense was rolling under Hue Jackson last year but has gone backward under Knapp, with mostly the same cast of players. On Sunday, the Raiders ran some misdirection plays early that worked, but drive after drive faltered. In contrast, the Broncos didn’t punt once.

A quarter through the season, the Raiders sit tied with Kansas City at the bottom of the AFC West. There are some winnable games on the schedule, but after a performance like Sunday’s, there’s little reason for optimism.

Wylie, who was let go after one successful season when the new regime came in, thinks that McFadden is a bad fit for the zone blocking scheme.

n HUE still had his players playing hard when it mattered.

That Christmas day KC game.. 3 long explosive plays one to DMOORE was on point. still put up 26 points last game of season. That should be enough for any team to win.

Allen will be lucky… lucky to win 8 games in 2 years

    ^^^^^^^^
Hue had to overcome so much adversity as a first year head coach it was crazy and he still had the team within one game of playoffs.

DA and Knapp would never be able to handle what Hue had to deal with last year and still have the team within one game of playoffs.

Hue deserved another year with a better DC.

Davis and McK blew it and now the team will suck for the next two years if not longer. Ooooff!

    ********************************
Al would have never hired DA in the first place. And if Al was alive, Greg Knapp would not be welcome back in the facility. If Knapp was any good at anything, when Kiff was fired, he would have been promoted to HC. But instead, the man that was actually doing a good job with his assignment, Tom Cable with the o-line, was promoted. Now Cable was not HC material, but his proven success with the O-line and his ability to coach a bunch of scrubs into a decent line that bought into his vision was enough to earn him a shot at HC, for the interim. And he wasted no time stripping Knapp of playcalling. Knapp has blown it everywhere he has gone. The fact that DA assumed this time would be any different, all while having one of the greatest offensive minds in NFL history in Al Saunders on the staff, who could have kept some continuity, lets me know that he has no clue what he is doing. None. If I was a first time HC, I would not want to leave my offense in the hands of a man that has NEVER succeeded in the NFL. Thats just me. I would do some more homework and try to put my squad in the best position to succeed. Whatever my final choice ended up being, I know it would be a lot better than Knapp and his predictable Madden 95 playbook.

we are already out of the running for the post season, and the promised of palmer leading us to glory have been proven to be empty delusion.

At least with tp we can evaluate what we have for next year. we will know if we need to draft geno smith or ej manual, and tp would give a reason to watch.

big mack cant sell palmer leading a losing team to the fan base”

TP6 has less experience and less knowledge of the playbook not to mention not as much experience reading defenses as Palmer….that being said you think Palmer looks bad struggling with this weak O-Line TP6 would look awful if we inserted him now.

A deflected punt by David Bruton, who got far enough inside Brandon Myers and made a perfectly timed leap, led to a short field Denver touchdown. How could that be, top paid players in both offense and defense, a supposedly “elite” qb and allegedly the best rb in the league (so the fan base and Corky believe) and a top pro-bowl DT, and the Raiders still can compete in the NFL. What have the Raiders turned into? The west coast bungles? Believe it, when you have captain bungle at the helm, that’s what you’ll get.
But, obviously not much coaching talent either, for one the head case, err coach, is a robot that can figure out left from right, who believes in a moronic offensive scheme, and what about the DC? Had this been Chucky Bresnahan, we would be all over this moron.

Secondly, could you even imagine ANY of the coaches I just mentioned doing so?………….. NO!

This “smilegate” has led to some here proclaiming DA to “not be a Raider”.

I maintain that THAT is the sole reason some here defend him on this. They don’t want him to be a “Raider”. They want our team to be a sanitized version of its former self and just like every other team in the league.

To them, saying our coach “is not a Raider” is the highest compliment you could give.

Being “a Raider” is waaaaaay too Al “Davisee” for them as they wish to distance this team from anything that remotely reminds them of the evil Al Davis or speaks to anything resembling what could be called “Raider Mystique”.

Franchises that are now experiencing the kind of consistent success that the Raiders experienced through the 60s, 70s and 80s have done so because they’ve built from the inside out. They draft and develop players well, and have consistency in philosophy between the front office and the coaching staff.

THESE are the things that the Raiders have been missing in the modern era. Al Davis did a lot of great things as an owner, but the last two decades were not good ones for the Raiders.

Believe what you want, but this transition wasn’t going to happen without being accompanied by a massive rebuilding project.

The first game of the year is more representative of what Rolando can do, That was the only full game he was healthy unfortunately fans couldn’t care less.
    =========================
I’d like to believe that but as of now I don’t.I watched him a lot yesterday and even if his ankle was bothering him,he was making no effort to stick his head into plays-NONE.Most of the time he was going sideways trying to avoid any contact.Watch him again. His effort yesterday was a joke, injured ankle or not.

  345. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

but yes he does have a lack of speed. It seems like Rolando wants to be close to home. Even in that PITT game.. i saw him in the 4th quarter on the sideline.. the crowd cheering on the offfense. Defense just came to the sideline all fired up…

He was just not really paying attention.. just chillin like was whatever zero emotion

I don’t need someone to tell what happened. ButThec this kid has given us all 50% of what he has or whatever % he’s puttin’ it on the field good or bad. That’s what I love about the kid and he doesn’t MAKE EXCUSES!!

Thank God the Raiders are seemingly more disciplined when it comes to committing stooooopid penalties that can change the outcomes of games.

Too bad this current coaching staff can’t seem to put together a decent offensive and defensive scheme with the necessary halftime adjustments to make this team competitive.

Getting outclassed 27-0 in the second half yesterday had nothing to do with penalties.

Frustrating game, but can’t act shocked at this season’s results. Almost no draft picks, trimming “talent” to get under the cap, rookie HC and DC, and…. Knapp. Like I said a couple of weeks ago, we’re in a rebuilding season, (probably two). We have a very good (but often injured) RB and maybe one or two other players to build a team around. Denarius might become a star (also appears to be injury prone). CP is perhaps a little better than NFL average, but aging. Wheeler has been a pleasant surprise, but only by comparison (think about P. Willis for a moment). Zero players on D who are really better than average and 2LBs and 2CBs that couldn’t start anywhere else.
Sucks, but I think Reg, DA, and JT deserve a decent chance to show us something. The previous eight years of hell have nothing to do with them and they didn’t take over a team with talent (and cap room) like Harbaugh did…

The example he is setting is “this is just a game”, which of course it is, but a team has no chance if it thinks this way. No way have i ever been close to being a pro baller but if i’m one on one with my dad and he beats me i’m pissed till a while after, just how it goes

I agree. I think a good portion of change comes when fury is unleashed and stress goes higher – you are forced to concentrate – Singletary infused the Niners with it, but couldnt sustain the confidence needed in Alex Smith – but that defense took everything personal, and got much better. with most young coaches , he hasnt been in the league long enough to infuse a philosophy for players to pick up on, and is still forming a personality….

Look I Agree, I played (not pro) and am competitive just as much as the next guy. But a majority if players really dint get that bent out of shape. It’s a check, that’s just how it is. The problem is it doesn’t seem like we have any of those types if players that do care. The ones you see on other teams screaming at others and rallying the troops.

When I first saw that pic it bothered me a little because it was Denver. But then it passed. DA and Fox are good friends and it was his first game HC a team in his old place. I just don’t put that much stock into it. I’ll focus on his record at the end of the season.

This. More than anything. Win or lose, this is not the Raiders that we see. The Real Oakland Raiders died with Al. What we have is an NFL expansion team. And it will feel even more like it when the powers that be move them to a shiny new stadium in LA.

They destroyed my Raiders in a quarter of a season. And turned them into the Jags.

Leaders should lead from the front. It wasn’t just a grin, it was the Head Coach of the Raiders smiling and having a great time after the worst lost to the Broncos in 50 years. If Fox and Allen were such good friends then why was Fox calling blitzes in the 4th Quarter? If Allen doesn’t care about winning in Oakland why should his staff? Why should his players? The joke is that this guy has a job.
