Grading the Raiders from Sunday’s loss to Broncos

Here’s how the Raiders graded out in Sunday’s 37-6 loss to the Denver Broncos, according to beat writer Jerry McDonald:

Pass offense

Carson Palmer (19 of 34, 204 yards) did some good things early on but found himself increasingly under pressure as the Broncos expanded their lead and couldn’t convert in the red zone. Threw his best deep ball of the season — a 37-yard sideline strike to Denarius Moore and a couple of nice screens. Grade: C-plus

Rush offense

Darren McFadden gained 15 yards on his first three carries, a promising start that went nowhere. He finished with 34 yards on 13 carries. The longest gain went to Mike Goodson on a 13-yard run. The Raiders needed to run to keep Denver’ s pass rush at bay and failed. Grade: F

Pass defense

Target practice, fish in a barrel, pitch-and-catch, use any descriptive clichés you want and that’s what Peyton Manning did to the Raiders defense. He completed 30 of 38 passes to eight different receivers for 338 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, had zero pressure. It all looked so easy. Grade: F

Run defense

Denver’s no-huddle offense set a tempo the Raiders simply couldn’t match, and it showed up in the Broncos running game, which got progressively better as the game went on. Willis McGahee gained 119 yards on 19 carries and Ronnie Hillman, who had just eight yards on three touches coming in, had 31 yards on 10 attempts. Grade: D-minus

Special teams

A deflected punt by David Bruton, who got far enough inside Brandon Myers and made a perfectly timed leap, led to a short field Denver touchdown. Taiwan Jones had two nice stops on punt returns of Jim Leonhard but later got a face mask penalty. Punt returns? That would mean the Broncos actually punted. They didn’t. Grade C-minus

The Raiders had all the reason in the world to come out in the second half ready to play, trailing just 10-6 when it could have been 20-3 and unraveled. Three-and-outs followed by Denver touchdowns. Sorry, but can’t agree with Dennis Allen’s “compete until the end” stance with Carson Palmer. He needed the hook for his health. Grade: F

YO ALLEN .. I like u dude.. but if u stick to KNAPP cuz he is ur golfin buddy im gonna have to revaluate u too man.

How hard is it to go to saunders and ask him.. Help a brotha out on offense. How hard is it to like at the film and GAME TAPE OF LAST YEARS OFFENSE?? How hard is it to talk to DMAC ??

  • MiamiRaider78

The Zone Scheme should be left on the sidewalk in trash bags for pick up in the morning. Toss Knapp in there as well.

  • JLofty

Yeah 99 hustling down the field was almost the only positive I saw yesterday. Maybe Degnarlious play too…

  • YoungAmerican

They destroyed my Raiders in a quarter of a season. And turned them into the Jags.

The hyperbole machine has kicked into high gear around here.

Sad that the only thing about the Raiders that some people here liked was Al Davis.

How many of those 13-13 games with +10 penalties could have been won had not a costly penalty or two not been made?

Thank God the Raiders are seemingly more disciplined when it comes to committing stooooopid penalties that can change the outcomes of games.

Too bad this current coaching staff can’t seem to put together a decent offensive and defensive scheme with the necessary halftime adjustments to make this team competitive.

Getting outclassed 27-0 in the second half yesterday had nothing to do with penalties.

Why does today feel so fricken surreal?

Because the Pittsburgh game gave us false hope.

  • Dakota

So we should trade our best player in McFadden so that we can keep knapp and the zbs he brought with him?

  • MiamiRaider78

I’m hoping that Al Saunders was kept, in case of an emergency.

If so, it’s time to break the glass and pull the alarm.

  • Who cares if McBosworth plays hurt and plays hard, he still doesn’t make any plays. He’s a bust.

  • The Oracle

If Allen wants to reminisce and back scratch with Fox, do it on your own damned time. Not on national TV, at midfield, in front of your wounded soldiers with your enemy laughing…
What are the players supposed to think about our integrity as a team when they see that?!

    palmer your hero
palmer aint our hero, up until last week i was thinking JC would have been a wash with him but he looked like the pro bowl version last week and this week looked solid again given the circumstances same way rgIII looked last week with no oline help, it’s no different. i’m happy that black qb’s are proving it isn’t that white guys are smarter but rather that circumstances dictate opportunities but to be a racist Raider fan is an oxymoron to me

  • DJ Johnny

I wonder too why DA is so dam smiley and happy considering his old buddy was still calling blitzes to take down his QB while they were up by 31 pts. in the 4th.

    Yeah..good ole John Fox.

Alot of coaches would be in Fox’s face after that asking him wtf he’s trying to do?

What he was trying to do was humiliate and embarrass you…and maybe injure your QB.

That’s ok. We’re the kinder, gentler Raiders now. We just wanna get along with everybody.

Tampa Bay coach John McKay was once asked what he thought of his offensive team’s execution.

He said, “I’m in favor of it”

  • lefty12

Your defense gives up over 30 every time it goes into a game and all you do is whine about the OC.I don’t say we need a top5 defense, although that would be great, but the defense is a bigger problem than the offense.A few takeaways and stops allowing the offense to get on the field and get into some sort of rhythm sure wouldn’t hurt.

  • Dakota

    Goooooo lakers!

If Condo doesn’t get kicked in the head we would be 2-2 right now.

No, they should admit they screwed up and change the system. When does that ever happen? They will force feed us 10 more games of this crap until DMC is injured and the season is lost and THEN they will start to look at experimenting with things. I didn’t say we SHOULD do anything. I said you can possibly expect it.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Darren Mcfadden should be a RAIDER 4 Lyfe!! He is not some byytch. He plays hard for his team! Who remembers those long runs in 2010 and 2011? Who remembers that Jacksonsville game in 2010? That was straight power blocking!!

Darren Mcfadden has more RANK then Dennis Allen imo. Darren should have enough power to fire KNAPP. it would be like

Darren McFadden first player in history to fire his Offensive Coordinator. Apparently AL davis put it in DMACS contract that gave him this type of control. Nobody knew till Darren chose to excersize that option today and fire Knapp!

    Reggie Mckenzie had zero clue.

  • Raidernationdave

One of the most successful plays Oakland used last year was the ‘wheel route’ with Marcel Reese (pride of Hesperia HS). Have you seen even one ‘wheel route’ with him this year?

Here another stat: According to Cork using Jerry’s grades “Darren McFadden gained 15 yards on his first three carries, a promising start that went nowhere. He finished with 34 yards on 13 carries.”

That means DMac the rest of the way gain 19 yds. on 10 carries for a 1.9 yds. per.

    Fire Greg Knapp please.

25 years of flying to LA and the Bay and yesterday was the first time I’ve ever switched off a game, never even left early during the shambles of the last decade.

This team no longer has an identity, this isn’t the Raiders, it’s insipid putrid dog turd, and it’s unwatchable and heartbreaking.

uh, Javedon Clowney isnt coming out until 2014, at least. Why are people pinning their hopes on college players – if i had a nickel for every “WE HAVE TO HAVE THIS PLAYER” myopia.

we’ll need a lot more than that.

Some douche bronco fan was giving me Schyt late in the game about the score, so I just turned to him and said yeah this is bad, but thank god it isn’t a 59-14 loss at home because that would be really embarrassing. That shut him up.

  • JLofty

Shoulda put Pryor in yesterday and let the youngster have a crack at some 4th Q progress.

  • DT42

383- But when was the last time you’ve seen a coach do it? I’ve never seen that. Not with a division rival. I think the only time anyone on this blog has ever seen it is with the Harbaugh brothers. And that’s becuase they are brothers. We just took the worst beating from the Broncos in 50 years!! Its the most unprofessional thing a coach can do.
