Raiders in midst of final practice before bye

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012 at 12:04 pm in Oakland Raiders.

No surprises, or new faces, on the practice field today, as the Raiders get in one last practice before breaking for four days during the bye week.
Cornerback Shawntae Spencer (foot), right offensive tackle Khalif Barnes (groin), defensive tackle Richard Seymour (unknown) and tight end Richard Gordon (hamstring) are the only players not taking part in the proceedings.
Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (concussion) is practicing for the second straight day. We spotted him running routes and catching passes, too, which bodes well for a return against the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 14.
Not sure what’s up with Seymour not practicing. He was here Monday and Tuesday. Best guess is, coach Dennis Allen gave Seymour the day off so that Seymour could fly to Georgia to spend more time with his family. That has been the case in recent seasons.

– Word is circulating that the league will consider moving the Raiders-Jaguars game to Monday night, Oct. 22, if the A’s advance to the American League Championship Series.
The A’s could host Game 6 and or 7 that weekend, depending upon how things play out. Not worth worrying about this early, but be forewarned if you have tickets to that game.

    Jackson = a great play caller

    I would bring em back to run the offense. Thats about it.
    ===========================================

    If Jackson was as great a play caller as some of you think, Janikowsky would not have had such a great year. Jackson would set up for FG’s not TD’s. That’s one of the reasons why we lost. And let’s not even start about the goose eggs he kept putting up in the 2nd half of games.
    =============

    Who would you have running the offense right about now?

    Hue or Knapp?
    Its not even close.
    Knapp came in wit this BS zone scheme. Totally fked our offense up.
    Last year the problem wasn’t the offense, it was the defense.
    This year its both.

  9. RaidingTexas Says:

    Knapp may suck, but so did Hue. He had to go. Period. You guys need to move on from that sh!t.

    I don’t think there is ANY doubt the new regime has come here to put certain systems in place, got rid of some of the very high contracts and are in the process of seeing who fits and who doesn’t in the new org.

    This was not about taking an 8-8 team and trying to win a game or two more. This year was about installing the new regimes systems and seeing which players mesh. You don’t blow up a young 11-5 team. An 8-8 team? Yep.

    So you agree with Mistic that all that ails the Raiders offense is a bad QB?

    ===========================

    No. That’s why I’ve repeatedly said that Palmer isn’t the cause of the Raiders’ offensive woes.

    But if Geno Smith keeps playing the way he has been (he’s been the best player in CFB thus far), and the Raider scouts consider him the type of player who can carry a team, they’d be insane to pass on him just because they have a 32-year-old Carson Palmer.

    …I know you and 99% of the rest made the excuse the palmer needed dmac and moore then we would be light years ahead of the team we had last year.

    well it hasnt happend we have scored 13-14 and 6 in the losses, we are one of the worst 3rd down teams in football and that is where the qb makes his living.

    but since you brought it up the jc led 4-2 raiders were hands down the best team and with the best qb we have had since gannon. 12-7 undefeated in the division and number one in the division. the team has gone backwards ever since, 5-9 yes backwards

    That team was far far far better than what palmer has led.

    how can this be argued?

    We won with that awful defense last year and the same o-line

    Palmer has not delivered it is that simple

    palmer Dmac and the oakland running game.

    So someone in here is trying to lie on me, i must now recount my take. pay attention dutch.

    1. Dmac is a poor fit for the zone scheme. he did run zone in college but it was mainly out of a wild cta package, where he would fake to felix jones. that play fake bought dmac a split second and forced him to slow down and find the crease. felix did most of the outside zone runs, and dmac would routinly go between the tackles or the first gap. he has never been very good runnig to sidline with his shoulders parallel to the los. Dmac is not suited for the outside zone.

    2. plamer is ill suited to run the zone bootleg offense as well. his lack of athleticism means the defense does not respect or even notice his boot leg fakes. as soon as they see the o-line turn side ways they know to sell out to dmac because palmer will not van not keep it. This is one of the main reasons dmac is getting hit in the back field on the outside zone, too many defenders to block.

    I have also stated that knapp can counter this with a little mis direction and creativity. jet sweeps ghost motions and reverses would easily help dmac find running lanes and slow down the pursuit to the outside zone.

    This is a combination of knapps lack of creativity and ability to maximize players talenst, dmacs strength of down hill running being taken awy, and palmer’s inability to threaten the edge in the boot leg game.

    I hope this clears up the confusion cuased by others trying to speak for me.

    No I know what you’re saying. It’s not completely on the mark though. The dude who built the car likely put so much more time and effort and part of his soul to obtain the vision of his dream car. The guy that is buying it has little or no appreciation of the custom fenders he had to special order and took 6 months to get on back order. The new owner just tears them off with a prybar like they were junk.

    That’s kind of the way I see Mark Davis’s view of the franchise. He didn’t build it, runs it now as a businesse venture only, and it wouldn’t kill him to see it die on the vine if it secured his independent wealth. He didn’t create it so it’s easier to destroy.

    Hue wasn’t the right guy to preside over a rebuild. And no matter what, it was going to be a rebuild. The Raiders lost the one guy who was in charge of all things football operations since the 60s.

    The Raiders needed a quiet, business-like approach to teach these players discipline and accountability – which for the young players drafted into the organization would be the first time they are taught these things.

    Hue Jackson and Al Davis both preached “win now”. To do so, they traded away the top 3 draft picks the Raiders had, and created an unsustainable salary cap situation. And it wasn’t enough for the Raiders to “win now”.

    And you wanted Hue Jackson to “build” on last season? With what? He’d still have to find a way to shed nearly $30 million to get under the salary cap. And he’d have no draft picks to restock the cupboard. And Hue Jackson is the guy you want to preside over those decisions? Laughable.

    The Raiders needed a real GM with actual front office experience. With a new GM comes new personnel – people who mesh with the GM’s vision of where the team needs to go. THIS is consistency – a consistent philosophy throughout the organization. The only way teams succeed in this league is when their front office, scouting department, coaching staff, and roster are all on the same page. This wasn’t going to happen with Hue Jackson running the show.

    why argue about this but dont take my word for it, try nfl offensive line guru BOB WYLIE

    I thought that Darren was a back that ran downhill and off tackle,” Wylie told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “He is so fast, he out runs the zone block. … Sometimes your better off just pitching him that ball and letting him run around the corner and around the D. He can do that.” – BOB WYLIE
    =========================================

    Again as I have said in here many times before, the zone system is not just a zone system it is a combination of zone and power. If it is lst and goal from the one, teams are going to power block not zone block. It has always been that way, so defenses can’t get comfortable.

    With regards to Wylies comments, those comments kind of concern me. And what I mean by that is, when McFadden first got here, I thought the exact same thing Wylie is saying: you can just pitch the ball to McFadden he will scoot around the edge for five yards every time. And basically he can. But you can’t run your offense that way. To be a RB in the league, you have to be able to run between the tackles. That is what the new regime is trying to do with McFadden.

    SB I dont follow. macfadden is getting killed running the outside zone plays, running between the tackles is what hue brought for macfadden and that is where he has been spectacular going all the way back to college.

    Knapp is forcing the outside zone and it is not working.

    Dmac hasnt been in very many short yardage or goal line plays this season, he is struggling with the out side zone plays.

    The zone scheme only uses power blocking in short yardage and goal line mainly at least the way knapp runs it.

    we are not talking zone scheme in general but zone according to knapp.

    Knapp needs to send dmac between the tackles he hasnt and that is the big issue i have with him and his use or vision for dmac.

    Basically I completely agree with your entire post. I think the issue is teams are REALLY keying on McFadden. The first few weeks we did not have Moore. Last week we did not have Heyward-Bey. The TE’s are a work in progress so teams have been ganging up on the run game, and rightfully so.

    So, what do you do? Well, McKenzie is a run guy. Allen is a run guy and Knapp is a run guy. These guys want to pound the rock. But they are going to have to heave it probably 10 times in a row at the beginning of games to open up the run game, instead of trying to run it to no avail. But that is going to be harder than it looks when your wides’s are Streator and hagan.

    I wonder why the Pitt game was so different from the Denver game offensively for the Raiders.

    They were throwing mid range strikes, throwing to the sticks on 3rd…….

    Did they experiment with Al Saunders?
    =======================================

    To me McFadden was running harder in the Pitt game. He kind of looked like the lst two games last Sunday.

    Kell, Denver was coming off a loss, facing 1-3 in the first year of their Manning era. Whole team was jacked up, including the defense. Steelers were coming off a win, thought they were going to roll right over us. I think those were the primary factors.

    Bob Melvin should give a motivational speech to the Raiders. How about them A’s. Suck it Texas.

  230. Sullivan44 Says:

    Denver saw us beat Pittsburgh. They figured they’d have to give us the best game of their lives to prevent 1-3. Meanwhile we went into Denver coming of a win and full of steam, thinking we were going to roll over them.

    Who would you have running the offense right about now?

    Hue or Knapp?
    Its not even close.
    Knapp came in wit this BS zone scheme. Totally fked our offense up.
    Last year the problem wasn’t the offense, it was the defense.
    This year its both.
    ============================================

Yep.
    =========

    You don’t blow up a 8-8 team.
    You build on it!

    ==========

    A weak 8-8 team (only real win coming against a reeling Chargers team and Palmer playing in front of La Jolla – his backyard. – us barely being able to beat the Bears and backup Caleb Hanie….us eking out a win v. the Texans, who were a playoff team. ….we should’ve blown out the Vikings, and kept them in it.

    The reality is the roster is a culmination of picks that should have been there and have long since been traded, with a number of former players barely hanging on as subs or out of the league. The draft is the key and picks were traded, the coaching staff had little if any input – and you see the result.

    Arizona is back primarily due to drafted players like O’Brien Schofield, Patrick Peterson, Calais Campbell and keeping their coaching staff (Ken Whisenhunt, who we could’ve had, if Davis let him pick his staff) – top notch assistants like Bones Fassel left due to the uncertainty of coaching, the ST struggle YET AGAIN.

    I shudder to think that Allen could be Kiffin II. Someone here using our situation as a stepping stone to a BCS head coaching gig…has it come to that?

    Carson got the call to change plays at the line, and was a bit more familiar with facing the Steelers from his NFC North days?

    It was like night and day – facing Peyton Manning will do that. – really wondering if Allen had growing pains, and why couldnt he get a DC with a little more experience? Why didnt he know the previous Knapp led OC struggled?

    toss sweep ( aka power sweep) and outside zone stretch are two totally different things.

    you may be confusing them
    ===================================

    Exactly. I understand what he is saying and you are right. Again, the problem is you have the two guys running the org that are going to run certain systems. If for whatever reason the players are not system fits, they will find players who are. Not change their system beliefs.

    ===============================

    This is what blows my mind. Allen was on the same team that adjusted its offense to match Tebow’s strengths, the defense rallied and they went to the playoffs. Allen MUST see the similar issue and modify – how embarrassing was it to watch the Niners pull out the wild cat successfully v. the Jets – and we have a similar player, Terrelle Pryor -and he’s INACTIVE?!

    Either Allen has a heap of ego, or its just the growing pains of a young, stubborn coach? Its bizzarre, because don’t young people change and innovate?!

    Yeah, Dakota. Its only too obvious – were just trying to rationalize Allen doing the same thing over and over again – maybe the bye week will have him see the obvious. It really seems like these guys didnt have the contingency plan in place following the pre-season struggles.

    Hamilton and Washington were just caught on camera arguing in dugout.

    We gonna get a Reggie Jackson/Billy Martin moment today?

    ========================

    Sweet revenge as Ron Washington was once with the A’s – sweep would be perfect.

    I dont know what Hamilton is arguing over -their batters were dominated by Grant Balfour.

    Not speaking too soon, but I think the Rangers simply folded – and the A’s have been accustomed to winning one run games with clutch performances…low payroll underdog triumphing over gazillion dollar rosters – Aint it grand?

    Moneyball.
