There are people here who are
trying to Blane our 1-3 start this season in AL.
Disgusting!!!!!

Look at the 22 starters for Game 1 this year (I will stretch a bit and replace Streater with Moore because he would’ve started had be been healthy):
Palmer
McFadden*
Reece*
Veldheer*
Carlisle*
Wiz*
Brisiel
Barnes*
Moore*
DHB*
Myers*
Houston*
Seymour*
Kelly*
Shaughnessy*
Wheeler
McClain*
Burris
Branch*
Huff*
Spencer
Bartell
16 out of 22 starters (73%) were drafted or signed by Al Davis. It’s still very much his team. If we were 3-1, he’d deserve a large share of credit too.
Two of the monster, ill-advised contracts Reggie had to dump in order to become cap compliant? Both signed by Al Davis too I might add

You do what you know. Reggie was part of the personal team that did things one way for 15+ years. He isn’t going to abandon the way he learned how to do things.
+++++++++++++++
A personnel team that built a perennial contender and Super Bowl champion while he was there, I might add.
Also, Reggie was 2nd in command right below Ted Thompson. He wasn’t just some guy in an office somewhere Mark Davis found by accident.

I can see us getting an early modest lead, and have Branch make a play and do something stupid, like some rehearsed dance or mocking the original dirty bird dance or something.
Only to get scorched in the 2nd half so he looks incredibly dumb.
Kind of par for the course these days.

Last year we were 4-2 with this team before DMAC was injured. Now this team is 1-3, so you can’t blame AL. Blame the Coaches!
October 5th, 2012 at 9:56 am
Should have just let Branch play for the franchise tag this season.
We didn’t really do anything with the cap space saved, and now we guaranteed him more dough, while his play went right into the crapper.

Blame him? Not really, I say that the reason we suck is because we have a lack of talent primarily on defense, which is a direct result of Al Davis’ drafting and contract mismanagement, and the beginning steps that reggie had to take to correct those errors.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I see.
Al is paying Wimbley how much to play for the titans?
Why did Al draft a 26 YO rookie OG who was inactive the 1st 3 games with his 1st pick?

***********************
Not true. Branch has big salaries in 2013 and 2015, and big roster bonuses, neither of which is guaranteed if you dont make the roster. Reggie didn’t write contracts like Al with HUGE signing bonuses that you cant escape. If we cut branch after this season it will only cost us 4.2 mill (if he is on the roster next season he will cost 10 mill). You have to dig a little deeper than the “4 year 26mill” to get the facts. Reggie protected the future of this team in all the contracts that he did, something Al was unable to do.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:11 am

Yeah, I guess the coaches should have realized they had a bunch of mental midgets on the squad who couldn’t understand basic blocking assignments.

His first pick… lol. 97th overall is a pick you use for developmental players. Bergstrom is a developmental olineman versed in our OL scheme. Reggie HAD to pick up those 2 cbs because he couldnt afford anything else after clearing 50 million dollars in ALS contract mistakes. Wimbley was indisputabley not worth 11 million dollars, and if he was on the roster this year his guaranteed money the next to years was even worse. We had to bite the bullet.
Do some research on capology brother. Really try to learn something about it, you will see the light, you are a smart dude.

That was a good choice by Reggie. Since an opening day sack, Wimbley has disappeared and been constantly run over on his side. Tennessee made a huge error.

You don’t draft a developmental player with your 1st pick regardless what pick it is when you so many needs on the defense. We needed a NT and Ta’amu was available, we needed a LB, DE, and CB. What did Reggie do? He drafted a backup OG.
Great Pick Reggie!!

Ta’Amu huh… you mean the guy who hasn’t suited up yet for the steelers? Sure thing. That would have made all the difference.
Use your head man. How many impact players come out of the 4th round and later? 95% of the players drafted that late are developmental players. 5% are instant contributors. The fact that with our limited draft picks the Reggie even found ONE starter is pretty impressive. Criner will contribute going forward, Streater already is as a UDFA, Burris starting, Bilukidi getting some rotation… thats not too bad a draft class from round 4 on…
Go ahead, point out all the players drafted after 97 that are starting right now for other teams. Go ahead, Ill wait.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:29 am
Worshipers,
Get it out of your head that DMAC is an elite back.
In his career he has had 2 great games, both in the 2011 season: 1) Denver Broncos where he ran 150 yds; and 2) NY Jets where he ran 175 yds. Both teams at that time were in the cellar and had atrocious defenses a high school back could have run right through.
Other than those two games he has been mediocre. DMAC has less yards gained on the ground than Michael Bush, both playing 4 seasons.
If you don’t believe me just look at DMAC’s stats.
I am not so sure that Knapp’s scheme holds DMAC back this year. I believe defenses are keying on him and he is not good enough to overcome that.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:33 am
To be elite at ANYTHING, at any position in any sport, you have to have had at least one playoff moment, one time when the world was watching you and you excelled.
Moments in October, and mid-November games in Jacksonville don’t count.

October 5th, 2012 at 10:36 am
You mean players like Burris who was drafted after the 26 YO rookie? LOL
Steelers have a healthy NT, so they don’t need Ta’amu. Who is our NT?
Like I said, we had/ have a defense that needs a lot of help, and players in later rounds can help/ start on this defense.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:38 am
The same players did well last year, you agree?
————————————————————-
LT and LG played well last year, imo.
C was decent prior to Satele geting injured.
RG was terrible.
RT, OK.
That being said, Wiz, Briesel, and Smith are making way too many MENTAL mistakes. The equivalent of TK jumping offsides.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:38 am
If I were DMAC, and ran behind a ZBS line, always running to the left or right waiting for a hole to open, I would simply run the required direction behind the lineman, then reverse field and run the other way, and bolt through any hole.
When the OC came onto me about the change-up mid-play I would simply tell him to pizz off.
Actually, it’s very easy. The Raiders wouldn’t dump me, maybe trade me at the end of the season.
If I went to another team if I were an elite back, that quality would soon shine.

By that logic then Barry Sanders was a pedestrian running back. Right?
***********************
Barry ran for 170 yards in a playoff game in 93-94, and ran for 187 yards in a playoff sealing victory that same season.
And he was undoubtedly the best regular season rusher in all of football.
Has Darren EVER been even the best regular season rusher, in his division?
October 5th, 2012 at 10:44 am
Would of loved to see Barry run behind that line in Dallas.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:45 am
Half the league uses either a true ZBS, or hybrid style blocking system, so I am sure Darren’s agent has informed him he can’t pout about the system.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:46 am
zbs takes a while to implement and it’s tough to defend against so should we be patient with it, tweak it or tear it down and start over?
We’ve had success with CP running no huddle, does that mean the O scheme is a good fit and we should be patient with Knapp possibly tweaking it, good fit but bad play calling thus we should allow Saunders to tweak it and call plays,or tear it up and start over?
October 5th, 2012 at 10:47 am
DMac,
What about Ross or Chekwa?
Huff was much better last week at corner, wouldn’t you say?
One of our LBs picked him off on that Decker TD, but did he give up anything else?
I have Hanson and Branch as the weak links in the secondary, but I doubt Branch is going anywhere.
Probably go with Huff, Gio, Branch, Lee, and Ross/Chekwa as my top 5 DBs.

Haven’t got a chance to review games.
Who has payed close attention to our O-line?
Who would you say is the weakest link?
Veldy has played well at LT IMO.
Are Coup days over. Has it been difficult to switch sides on the line? Should Bergs take over?
Wiz was beastin last season at Guard. Played well at Center when called upon. Looks to be struggling in the new zone system. + Missed many reps. Maybe just putting it together.
Barnes seemed to be playing well, before his injury. + no false starts.
Smith has struggled a it.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:51 am
I just don’t see how you tear it up and start over, and sell that to the defense to get max effort.
If the staff pretty much “gives up” so will the players, and that is not good for anybody.
October 5th, 2012 at 10:52 am
On those diagrams of the yellow line, red line stuff for good/bad blocking, seems that Briesel is involved with a lot of the red lines.

That 1-3 was followed by the miracle win against San Diego, the awful, flat performance against SF, the azz-whoopings of the Broncos and Seahawks and the Jacoby Ford Show against KC.
After the Atlanta game, Jacksonville, KC and Tampa Bay are teams that can be whooped on.
Truthfully, the more I think, the more I believe 4-4 isn’t necessarily farfetched even if it is unlikely.

DMAC
—
Yeah its a great read, really breaks down the ZBS and run blocking in general, to sum it all up. ZBS presents too many chances to make mistakes, and without a ‘97-02 Denver Offensive Line, its hard to execute on the regular. Author believes during the bye week evaluation Allen/Mckenzie might tone it down and try to use more Power/angle runs, much like our O-coordinator from the past two years. I hope it works out, and I hope the Atlanta game is like last years Houston game where are Defense just doesn’t give up. It’s up to TK and Seymour…
October 5th, 2012 at 11:13 am
The first year of the old scheme some of you are talking about was ROUGH.
Last year was year 2 of that offense.

One of the biggest surprises is DMAC going for under 3 yds. a carry….and being healthy.
Wasn’t our biggest concern that he would get injured right away?
I’m no soothsayer but I did “predict” that McClain was going to be ineffective.
IMO…w/o beaking down every single play on tape, even the football layman can see how bad this guy is.
OCCASIONALLY he makes a play but it seems rarer and rarer.
Not only is he NOT effective, but he is an actual liability out there. His mere presence on the field causes discord and ineffectiveness for our defense.
IF DA is really doing an honest evaluation does he keep McClain out there or do we have no choice?
October 5th, 2012 at 11:15 am

Yes last year before he got hurt. He was the top back in th league.

Comment #2 above is the most stupid statement I’ve read. DMAC’s performance was based on the Broncos and Jets’ games when they were in the cellar and virtually non-competetive.
DMAC has done little in this league. We should trade him while he still has value. An excellent and durable, and proven, CB would be worth DMAC’s value.

McClain is the most irksome Raider of late. Not only is he unfit to play in the NFL, he has to be a drain on the rest of the D who constantly have to practice and play with such a slouch.
To heap worse upon bad, we have DA lying straight up into our faces saying what a great talent McClain is with a football mind second to none. Further DA swears McClain is simply misunderstood, is fine and upstanding, and is having a break out year.
Adding fuel to the fire is Corky who interviews DA and does not challenge DA’s false claims about McClain.
As I have said before, McClain is only good for playing “thug in the ghettos of Alabama”.

Good afternoon Fellas!
Interesting debate going on who’s at fault for this lowly entertaining team (aside from Pitt game).
Everyone is at fault right now, from top to bottom.
Players need to execute, coaches need to coach.
Now installing discipline is not just reducing penalties. Other forms of discipline the coaches are having a hard time getting in these guys heads are, making correct reads, blocking the correct man, running near perfect routes, takling, creating turnovers, mismatches etc..
These areas are not getting fixed or being consistent, so it’s on the coaches as well as the players. We may not have all the talent, but still no excuse to perform the way they do. I know they have it in them, Pitt game is proof!

It all starts off as yellow lines and then blockers turn upfield in search of blocking no one in particular, while DMC chooses the incorrect gap because he’s inpatient. Bigger problem is the yellow lines turning to red though. If we got the blocking right and it stayed yellow, DMC would have a better view of where and when to go.

Anyway, this season we need to ditch about half the players, Knapp, Tarver, the freakish spawn Mark Davis, and others.
The best thing is just to forfeit the season, put TP in and allow him to develop or crash and burn, acquire players from multiple sources and keep the few who stick.
I we can go 1 / 16 we will be the money regarding draft picks in 2013. The glaring issue then will be to hire staff who actually has knowledge of what it takes to play in the NFL.
Finally, let’s lose our big, ugly, red-headed, freckled faced, affirmative action hand-me-down GM and hire Gruden.

The results look catastrophic. The difference on any given play is one missed assignment here or there. It’s a very fine line between executing a play for nominal gain or getting stuffed. Before you all decide to mail in the season, you should know. It’s not that big of gap to turn the corner. It’s all in the execution. Cold, precise, emotionless execution is what is needed.

Most public figures are out and out liars, same as DA. We talk about who won the debate the other night and Romney is declared the winner. That wasn’t a debate it was a lie-fest.
So no one tells the truth.
Unfortuately, these Raiders are so hide-bound to banging a round peg through an oblong hole they will do anything to square their images.
The club spent an inordinate amount of money on McClain, and he is the 2nd biggest draft bust in their history.
Now they have to justify it anyway they can. Just like Romney said, “I’ve never said I would lower taxes on the rich”, DA says McClain is a great player with a fantastic football mind.
For now the club has no one to replace McClain. This off season they can send him packing, or possibly he’ll go to prison. Either way DA won’t have to justify anything at that time. McClain will be gone and that will be that.

People respond in different ways, depending on their make up. My guess is DA thought propping him up, giving him confidence, and saying out loud just how good he is (or can be) would do it for McClain.

big mack vs al davis ?
not really. First you should be thankful that we do have people on this blog that understand contracts and the cap. BCZ24 is not a person i agree with a lot, but he knows his stuff when it comes to the contract terms.
Big mack was up against it, his hands were tied a bit and he had to be very creative with limited money available. Getting rid of some of the huge contracts and players was needed because those guys would not fit the new vision or systems. You cant pay huge money to guys that dont fit the future plan.
Also Davis’s contracts and playes were good fits for what Davis wanted to do, and the coaching staff at that time, this is a new regime and most hold overs dont fit what they are looking for.
Yes it is painful watching this mismatched scheme and players, and watching the only scrubs we could afford, but it is a unnecessary part of the process.
Dont worry as we move ahead and the team gets its finances together, they will be able to get better players that fit what they are trying to do. This includes the draft, we wont always be limited to picking in the 3rd round and later.
Not sure why anyone expected an overnight turn around in a rebuild, or worse yet, a reloading process when you are playing totally different systems.
It will get worse before it gets better, but it is much like loosing baby teeth, or tearing down muscle lifting weight, with the knowledge that when it heals it will be stronger.
Embrace the rebuild people, you should have seen this coming

its a laughable notion that the coaches will completely change the offense or scrap the wco, or the zbs, or even bring in sunders in week 5 of the season. Then all of the work that has been done to install a new plan and offense would go to waste. It would set back the future, which is bringing in guys that fit the wco and zbs next year. This does not happen in football and if it happened here we would have to seriously question the leadership.

Hey Steve, RoMac is slow but stout, why don’t they convert him to a DE or DT. It might be a better fit.

Dudes–I figured it out…Klas Tjorborn is Kool Kell! HaHa! I knew that dude was about as Swedish as Charles Bronson!

Pretty slow in here, so I’ll post a little A’s news….
Jarrod Parker will start Game 1 of the ALDS against the Tigers.
Parker began the season at Triple-A, but he wound up making 29 starts for the A’s, posting a 3.47 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. He’s the best choice for Game 1, though he’ll face a tough task in opposing Justin Verlander. The A’s will wisely start Tommy Milone in Game 2 at home, where he is a much better pitcher. Though the A’s haven’t announced the rest of the rotation, it’s expected to be Brett Anderson in Game 3 and A.J. Griffin in Game 4.

I asked Steve about Pryor’s future as Raider QB. He said he has none. Mistic?
October 5th, 2012 at 1:12 pm
The Question I wanted answered is: Why does it seem like everyone wants to see Taiwan Jones? All I’ve seen him do in one plus seasons is fumble and get injured. Is this like the runnning back version of “Everybody loves the back up quarterback”? I don’t believe our lack of rushing yardage has anything to do with our running back, it all sits squarely on the ZBS, and even Bo Jackson would struggle in Knapp’s system.

These Chats are pretty brutal because he really doesn’t tell us anything we don’t already know. I mean he tries to, but people just keep asking the same dumb questions over and over again–Basic stuff that are just softballs that serve no purpose..
Anything that gets even moderately complex is either pure speculation on his part…or the answer we have already covered in HERE a million times already…
Least the Dude tries I guess.

Regarding a move to LA…..
If Mark was planning on relocation…..following this horrendous season will be the perfect time…..
Hopefully he leaves his Madden and Wolf “Handpicked” regime behind and makes the decision on his own….

+++++++
Because the dude deserves another shot. Just because he made a mistake or three in his first game back in action doesn’t mean he should be relegated to covering punts for the rest of his freakin career…give the kid some touches..especially in a mile high blowout..What is the issue here?
October 5th, 2012 at 1:17 pm
Mikie G, What did he do last year? What did he do in the preseason this year? What did he do in the preseason last year? Fumble and get injured. Another fast draft choice. I’d love to be wrong, I hope I am. So far he hasn’t done anything too impressive.
