Remembering Al Davis a year later

Some of the people closest to Al Davis are still coming to grips with his loss last Oct. 8.

Here’s a link to a Bay Area News Group story story on the death of the icon and what some of his friends miss about him.

Here are some additional notes and quotes posted on the Web from a few players about Davis . . .

For a sense of how much things have changed in the past year, consider 25 of the 53 players on the Raiders roster one year ago today no longer are here, with Chimdi Chekwa on the practice squad.

Here’s a breakdown of the changes from the Oct. 9 game against the Houston Texans:

Starters gone: C Samson Satele, TE Kevin Boss, QB Jason Campbell, FB Manase Tonga, CB Stanford Routt, CB DeMarcus Van Dyke, LB Kamerion Wimbley, LB Quentin Groves,

Reserves: QB Kyle Boller, RB Michael Bush, RB Rock Cartwright, WR Louis Murphy, WR Chaz Schilens, CB Chimdi Chekwa, CB Chris Johnson, CB Joe Porter, CB Ron Parker, S Jerome Boyd, LB Darryl Blackstock, LB Bruce Davis, OT Joseph Barksdale, OT Bruce Campbell, OT Stephon Heyer, DT John Henderson, DE Jarvis Moss, DE Trevor Scott.

Has Mistic been in to justify Newton’s disastrous performance yesterday?

So many of the comments in this thread remind me that, ultimately, Reggie’s cardinal sin in the minds of many is not being Al Davis.

    Morning all.

    J-Raider says:

I may be wrong but im pretty sure our OC wasnt greg freakin knapp in 2010!!!

    *************************

    Just Fire Baby says:

Nope, but our OC through 4 games that year outscored this team by 9 points.

Less than a FG a game.

    ————————————————–

    Context my friend.

The 2010 Raiders (Hue’s 1st as play-caller) were coming of a 2009 season where they averaged 12.3 ppg for the entire season, so in 2010 after 4 games they were averaging 19 ppg, a 6.7 point improvement.

The 2012 Raiders (Knapp’s 1st year back) were coming of a 2011 season where they averaged 22.4 ppg for the season, so in 2012 we’re averaging 16.8, that’s 5.6 less.

In short, after Hue’s first 4 games he had improved scoring by an average of 6.7 points from the year before, after Knapp’s first 4 games we average 5.6 less than the previous season.

    Big difference.

    Funny how that works.

  • Just Fire Baby

    Bob,

Orrrrrr, we can look at the last 5 games of last season, where we barely averaged more points than the first 4 games this season.

Wrong, there won’t be another AD because times have changed, we get it, Al’s legend and place in history are set and that’s good enough.

Reggie has no cardinal sin so far, some of us think Hue should have gotten a 2nd season under Reggie’s control to try and have this team take the next step, but that ship has sailed.

Reggie has plenty of time left to make us change our mind, here’s hoping he does because it would be cool if a former Raider hand-picked by AD’s son and former Lieutenants took this team back to the glory days.

I believe that you do, Bob.

I wonder about a lot of others.

  • Just Fire Baby

Not sure how anyone can make a determination about ANY player, coach or front-office guy, after 4 games.

Those that have, have an agenda.

Realistically, every player should get 2-3 years, each coach at least a few games into his 2nd year to see if changes and adjustments have been made, and front office should probably be looking at 3-4 years if things are moving in the right direction or not.

I know that flies in the face of so many in here who want to run around being right SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad, that they will basically admit to rooting against their “team”, but instead root for their opinion.

    Sickening.

Hey you brought up the 2010 standard man…

Or we can also look at games where our best weapon, McFadden, played under Hue and compare ppg.

Or we can look at it from every angle and you wo’t find one where Knapp’s offense out performs Hue’s.

  • http://000 Bob Marley

    JFB.

“Realistically, every player should get 2-3 years, each coach at least a few games into his 2nd year…”

So Hue should have been brought back right?.

  • Just Fire Baby

Never said Knapp’s offense has outperformed Hue’s (yet), just saying they are not as far off as people want to think.

Hue’s first 4 games, were almost identical (take out the variables) as this years first 4. Last years last 5 games, same thing.

  • Just Fire Baby

Hue was here two years, and things were at our worst, his last month.

    So, uh, no.

    +++++++++++++++++

    Yep.

I have some sympathy because it’s been a decade of agony and that tends to make people antsy. Plus, they look at the 8-8 last year and think we were on the upswing.

Said it many times before, the disconnect is those who think 2011 was for real and those who think it was a mirage.

  • http://000 Bob Marley

    JFB.

Come on now, don’t stretch it.

Hue was Head Coach for 1 year, you just said every coach should get at least a few games into his 2nd year and that’s a very reasonable statement.

Is that what you are going to give DA too?.

A few games into 2013 before calling for his head.

    No double standards please.

  • Just Fire Baby

People make it seem like EVERY 8-8 team just cadillacs into the playoffs the next season.

Here are your 8-8 teams from last year:

Chiefs, Raiders, Jets, Chargers, Bronco’s, Bears, Eagles, Cowboys, Cardinals. Titans were 9-7.

Cardinals and Bears are the only team that has taken a leap realistically, and the Bears were only 8-8 due to injuries. The Donkeys blew everything up, and added a zillion dollar QB, to not much better results yet.

Chiefs, Raiders, Jets, Titans and Cowboys are all worse this year. Tough to tell on the Eagles, because their record has been better than their play.

  • SilverNBlackPA

So what do we think about this coming Sunday?

If Atlanta was coming to Oakland, I’d be very tempted to take the Raiders as my upset pick of the week. But since we’re making the dreaded trip to the eastern time zone, I’d say we’re hosed.

    Atlanta 34 – Oakland 17

  • Just Fire Baby

Hue was here for 2 years, and as people spin it, he was the de facto HC in 2010 as well.

And yes, DA has until about this point next season to do what he was brought in to do, fix the D and build a discplined overall team, before I start CONSIDERING the notion of firing him.

    Same with Knapp and Tarver.

  • Just Fire Baby

Here are your 2010, 7-9 through 9-7 teams:

Raiders, Jaquars, Dolphins, Chargers, Seahawks, Rams.

Not one made the playoffs in 2011.

  • SilverNBlackPA

Tony Gonzalez had 13 catches yesterday. Sunday would be a great time for Branch to step up and justify the faith/money the Raiders put into him.

It just hurts to think about Pat Lee and Joselio Hanson trying to cover Julio Jones and Roddy White.

You mean San Francisco-esque 1 year turnarounds AREN’T the norm in the NFL?! That a mediocre record one year isn’t a stepping stone to greatness the next? GASP. I have the vapors now, where’s my fainting couch.

    Uhmm ok then.

  • Just Win Baby

The whole division losing on our bye week is pretty much like a win for the raiders yesterday.

    Ahem…
I thought we already fired Krapp once before.

  • RAIDERMAN99

JFB, Krappy gets another 28 games to prove he’s a lousy OC before you’ll consider firing him ?

Am I reading that right ?

  • http://www.raiders.com Raider O

    Good morning nation.
    Still talking about Knapp?

  • RAIDERMAN99

Pryor said. “Wherever and whenever I wind up playing, I will be looking to prove him right for all did for me.”

Tits is a real genius for keeping TP inactive, isn’t he ?

    =================

The whole division losing only provides false hope to hopeless fans…this bye week was the perfect time to sign any new wr’s, db’s or lb’s that could improve this team. The fact that no one was signed or even worked out tells me Reggie has come to grips with throwing the season. He pretty much knows he can’t win this roster. Wholesale changes will come after another double digit loss season.

  • RAIDERMAN99

Starting to wonder if JFB is losing his marbles.

Did I actually see a comment from you about the Whiners getting ‘too cute’ and making a mistake in utilizing Kapernick ?

You think CK’s fumble yesterday outweighs all the positive runs and added dimension he’s brought to the whiner O so far ?

  • Just Fire Baby

No, a few games into next year.

    So between 14-18 games.

  • Just Fire Baby

    99,

Yes, they got too cute and he fumbled.

You don’t think the 49ers could have moved the ball without him the last two weeks?

  • R8ER MIKE

    GOOD MORNING NATION !!

  • DJ Johnny

    Hey Raider O,

Gotta be happy with your Buckeyes today.

    63 pts.?

  • http://www.GodIsImaginary.com RaiderDuck

Meanwhile, I see the immortal Louis Murphy had one catch for three yards yesterday.

But of course, trading him away was still this horrible mistake by Reggie, right???????

  • RAIDERMAN99

Yes, they got too cute and he fumbled.

You don’t think the 49ers could have moved the ball without him the last two weeks?
    ===============================================
No, I think they’ve moved the ball MORE effectively with him being used occassionally and CK’s added dimension has been a POSITIVE.

Even on the play he fumbled, there was a substantial gain before he turned it over.

And I maintain that Tits and Krapp are idiots for keeping TP inactive every single week.

Guess the Raid offense has been humming along and couldn’t use another dimension.

Wouldn’t want to give opposing defenses something else to prepare for besides those dynamic stretch runs that are working so well.

  • Dakota

If our hopes and dreams are in the hands of Pryor, then we might as well pack it in for the next 5 years.

    Come on people.

  • http://000 Bob Marley

Anyone here thinking of a yahoo Basketball fantasy league?…if so I’m in, just don’t go standard on the roster, add a couple of flex starting spots to make it better.

  • http://000 Bob Marley

Maybe I’ll start one myself, Dakota I want you in.

  • http://000 Bob Marley

    JFB too.

  • Just Fire Baby

    99,

Yes, we should be using TP more, because we aren’t humming along. A fumble by our offense is not that big of a deal, not much opportunity cost.

A fumble for a 49er time is costly, because they can score pretty frequently without that rinky-dink BS.

  • http://000 Bob Marley

Let me know if you are interested, gotta go now check back later or tomorrow.

  • Dakota

    No thanks. Too much work.

  • http://www.GodIsImaginary.com RaiderDuck

Oh, and “Beast” Campbell has been active for two games but according to NFL.com, has not seen the field yet.

So much for the “future HoFer” that Reggie supposedly lost for us…

  • boss01

How many WR’s, DB’s and LB’s were picked up BY ANY TEAM this week?

    ================

Not every team has 2 starting corners out, a defense ranked dead last, and zero playmakers at wr other than maybe D Moore who is a number 2 at best on any other team

  • Just Fire Baby

If you guys get a league together I will consider.

A lot of day-to-day gyrations in NBA fantasy leagues that are tough to keep up on with a traveling sales job, so I can’t guarantee a huge commitment like in Dell’s FFL.

  • Just Fire Baby

We got an undrafted FA in the WR rotation, a couple of DB’s we ALREADY picked up off the scrap heap, as well as LB’s.

There is nobody else out there who can help ANY team out, other than maybe some ST guys.

No teams are picking up contributors 4-5 games into the season.

Time to assess what we have, rather than roll in some scrub to realize what everyone else in the league already knew, that he can’t play.

  • Dakota

Dwight Howard wants fans to give him a new nickname…..how does Brokeback Mountainman sound?

He has bad back, and he is a big dude, like mountain big right?

  • RAIDERMAN99

    =====================================================
Fumbles are costly whether you’re humming along or stuck in the tar pits.

The issue is whether utilizing TP once in a while might be benificial or not.

The issue is whether this staff is using it’s weapons on offense correctly.

It’s not going to take me 2 years to come to the conclusion that they are not.

    I know it already.

They’re not getting all they can out of DMAC. I know he was more effective before the ZBS disaster.

Taiwan hasn’t been getting any touches. Not sure if his ribs adequately explain that.

TP being inactive is just another example of Krapp’s and Tit’s lack of VISION.
