Remembering Al Davis a year later

Some of the people closest to Al Davis are still coming to grips with his loss last Oct. 8.

Here’s a link to a Bay Area News Group story story on the death of the icon and what some of his friends miss about him.

Here are some additional notes and quotes posted on the Web from a few players about Davis . . .

For a sense of how much things have changed in the past year, consider 25 of the 53 players on the Raiders roster one year ago today no longer are here, with Chimdi Chekwa on the practice squad.

Here’s a breakdown of the changes from the Oct. 9 game against the Houston Texans:

Starters gone: C Samson Satele, TE Kevin Boss, QB Jason Campbell, FB Manase Tonga, CB Stanford Routt, CB DeMarcus Van Dyke, LB Kamerion Wimbley, LB Quentin Groves,

Reserves: QB Kyle Boller, RB Michael Bush, RB Rock Cartwright, WR Louis Murphy, WR Chaz Schilens, CB Chimdi Chekwa, CB Chris Johnson, CB Joe Porter, CB Ron Parker, S Jerome Boyd, LB Darryl Blackstock, LB Bruce Davis, OT Joseph Barksdale, OT Bruce Campbell, OT Stephon Heyer, DT John Henderson, DE Jarvis Moss, DE Trevor Scott.

The issue is whether utilizing TP once in a while might be benificial or not.

    *********************************

For this offense it would be; how could it not?

For top flight offenses, the risk/reward is not the same.

There is no ceteris paribus in the NFL.

There is nobody else out there who can help ANY team out, other than maybe some ST guys.

    ————————

Plaxico is out there, could help this team immensly in the red zone..could have looked to trade Seymour or Kelly for a db, lb, pass rusher, anything

    “All things being equal”

It’s a common phrase in the Econ world.

  • RAIDERMAN99

So your position is that the Whiners are making a mistake using CK as they have ?

    Disagree strongly.

    I also don’t consider those plays rinky-dink.

Regardless, ‘rinky-dink’ or not, they’ve been effective.

  • R8ER MIKE

    thank you sir !!

    Brokeback Mountain..hahaha
    Thats a good one D

  • Raiderbuck

that fact that we are losing is only part of it. That fact that we look so terrible out there on the field is most of it. If you’re going to lose at least make the other team work for it!

  • Just Fire Baby

So your position is that the Whiners are making a mistake using CK as they have ?

    *****************************

“Mistake” isn’t the righ-word, I just think the risk/reward is not as positive for the team as others.

Like defensively with the Giants and their 4 man rush. They can blitz sometimes, but what’s the risk/reward? They can generate a pass rush most of the time without blitzing.

Same with the 49ers. They can move the ball without that stuff, so they put themselves in a tough position if he fumbles and turns it over.

Just my take. 49ers were the first time EVER IN NFL HISTORY to rush for 300 yards and pass for 300 yards in the same game.

  • RAIDERMAN99

    Speaking of ‘rinky-dink’…
Was kind of shocked to see Carolina run some flat out college option plays with Kim Newt yesterday.

    I’m proud of my Buckeyes!
Maybe we should hire UM and start TP at QB.

CK probably had an UNDER bet working last week against the Jets.

Total is 41. Whiners up 34-0. CK has easy TD. Slides down after a 40 yard jaunt. Couple of kneels later his ticket is gold.

    ============================================

The fact that nobody’s signed Plaxico after 5 games tells us everything we need to know.

Neither Seymour nor Kelly has much trade value left. They’re both non-factors on 75% or more of the snaps they take, and everyone knows it.

    That was awful.

Doesn’t work in the NFL, as much as some people will try to tell you it does.

Tebow was the only one with a slight level of success at it, because he runs like a FB between the tackles. You aren’t getting to the edge in the NFL, and if you are, your QB is getting his head taken off for it.

  • Just Fire Baby

Not sure how trading TK or Seymour for some draft pick next year, probably not a very high one either, helps the the 2012 team.

    ==============================================

It won’t help the 2012 at all, but so what? This team’s not sniffing the playoffs. The Seymour trade can officially be considered a failure.

However, the medium-to-low draft picks we get back have the potential to help next year’s team.

  • RAIDERMAN99

By the way JFB, I am not going to criticize Slo for jogging any more.

I know that’s in vogue now, but I’ve come to realize he isn’t actually jogging.

That’s as fast as he can run.

    =========================

It would help tremendously in that I no longer have to watch them game after game with zero production to show for…you can’t trade both but Des Bryant can replace either one of them. Time to get rid of McClain too. It is simply addition by subtraction mainly. The Curry trade brought a spark last year, maybe there is someone out there that can come in a provide a spark. Maybe Carter is that guy who knows. I know this much, this defense can’t stop anybody, dead last in the league right now, something has to be done.

  • Dakota

The 2012 Raider team has reduced me to a fan who only looks forward to the Broncos and Chargers losing, and to the long, tedious NBA season, and to the 2013 NFL draft and the hiring of a new offensive coordinator.

Sad to see an NFL season end in early October.

    SMH

I still hold out a glimmer of hope that DA has turned over the offense to Al Saunders this past week and returned to the power blocking scheme….but I doubt it.

We really miss Kamerion Wimbley and his 9 tackles and 1 sack. Look how he has helped that Titan’s D.

And Routt, man his 1 int would really make this team unstoppable! KC is really kicking azz!

AHEM….25th in the league right now, better than last years 29th.

  • DJ Johnny

After Atlanta and going 1-4 it doesn’t eliminate mathematically but basically does.

I remember Pittsburgh starting 1-4 one yr. and then went on to go 10-4…but that was Pittsburgh coming off a SB season.

Having trouble latching on to any other team to “root” for..you know…like all us Raider fans do when it comes around playoff time.

With me, it’s always rooting AGAINST certain teams to win rather than rooting FOR any team in particular.

Titans D is worse than ours, in almost every statistical category.

    Hey Raider O,

Aren’t you glad Pryor ruined your school’s chance at a BCS bowl this year?

Sure, they blamed the coach, but it boiled down to TP’s actions that lead to all of this.

    GO Notre Dame!

  • boss01

AHEM….25th in the league right now, better than last years 29th.

    ————————

Yeah right now it might be 25th, I am willing to go out on a limb and predict after playing the Falcons next week, it will go from 25th to 30th if not dead last, and by the end of the year it will be 30th to dead last

  • Just Fire Baby

In order for a team at this stage in the season to move down 5 spots in one week, they would have to give up about 700 yards of offense.

    Not happening.

  • Roley Poley

Krappy gets another 28 games to prove he’s a lousy OC before you’ll consider firing him ?

    ************************

No, a few games into next year.

    So between 14-18 games.

    ………..

Why wait so long. The evidence is evident. Why prolong the pain? Why not rid the gout before it festers? Bye week should have resolved all or most maladies.
Reggie needs to show his balls.

  • Just Fire Baby

More likely scenario, we move from 25th to 26th or so after the Falcons game, than we play 3 of the worst offenses in the NFL in the Jags, Chiefs and Bucs, and move into the low 20′s.

    Print that!!!!

There’s a real high chance we’ll make those offenses look pretty good.

Hey with so much crappy offense this week, the Raiders moved up a spot in total offense, got closer to moving up in points per game, and up 3 spots in yards per carry!!

That’s because they had a bye and didn’t play.

  • The Big Banana

Well, it was a good time for a bye week for me as a fan.

Slept in, prepared homemade Belgian waffles for the wife, which we enjoyed with mango, raspberries, real maple syrup, OJ, and espresso.

Then had some epic sex, the kind you write home about.

Took a little nap, then wife and I tag teamed sealing the new fence.

Wife then prepared an amazing dinner consisting of creamed pumpkin soup and zucchini wrapped shrimp sautéed in duck fat with oyster, shiitake, and chanterelle mushrooms.

Oh yes, it was a good day.
