Remembering Al Davis a year later

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, October 7th, 2012 at 7:57 am in Oakland Raiders.

Some of the people closest to Al Davis are still coming to grips with his loss last Oct. 8.

Here’s a link to a Bay Area News Group story story on the death of the icon and what some of his friends miss about him.

Here are some additional notes and quotes posted on the Web from a few players about Davis . . .

For a sense of how much things have changed in the past year, consider 25 of the 53 players on the Raiders roster one year ago today no longer are here, with Chimdi Chekwa on the practice squad.

Here’s a breakdown of the changes from the Oct. 9 game against the Houston Texans:

Starters gone: C Samson Satele, TE Kevin Boss, QB Jason Campbell, FB Manase Tonga, CB Stanford Routt, CB DeMarcus Van Dyke, LB Kamerion Wimbley, LB Quentin Groves,

Reserves: QB Kyle Boller, RB Michael Bush, RB Rock Cartwright, WR Louis Murphy, WR Chaz Schilens, CB Chimdi Chekwa, CB Chris Johnson, CB Joe Porter, CB Ron Parker, S Jerome Boyd, LB Darryl Blackstock, LB Bruce Davis, OT Joseph Barksdale, OT Bruce Campbell, OT Stephon Heyer, DT John Henderson, DE Jarvis Moss, DE Trevor Scott.

What you are giving mack to me is nothing. Let me know when you got something.

  • AmysInCharge

Do yourself a favor, dont compare the Niners to Raiders,..biiiiiig mistake.

  • AmysInCharge

I think a good banner for my row 1 seats would be,..:

The Raiders now play in San Francisco

  • jimmyball12

When was the last time the 49erz were in the bowl amy? lol..what year?

  • theghostronin79

Lol. I’m hurtin just like everyone else, but I’m not gonna let it rule my life.

    ===============

Yep, Had a great couple of days in a cabin on the river…Peace, quiet, hot tub. Watched ALOT of college ball, it was a great weekend for that. Plus, being that I live in Eugene, Oregon I’m also a Ducks fan. At this point in time, it’s a great place to be. If they keep winning, they’ll be playin’ Alabama in the Natty.

  • DMAC

    Morning/afternoon peoples!

Still got faith in dem’ A’s. Tough lost yesterday.
Winning 3 in a row is not outta of the question.
    Go A’s!

  • AmysInCharge

Jimmy,..please stop,…those teams are operating on two different levels. Dont be that Raider fan that asks what year questions,..they might come back at you with what year was the last time the Raiders WON a superbowl…(30 years)….making it to a superbowl doesnt matter to the Niners,..winning them does,…5-0…but like I said, please dont compare those two teams,..you only look stupid.

  • AmysInCharge

Gotta roll kids,..lets try harder with those banners, got about a week and a half….good luck!

  • DMAC

Getting Spencer back for our following game will be huuuge.
That way we can move Huffy back to the safety position and play lees soft zone coverages.

  • jimmyball12

Amy…When was the last time? And why are you here? Dont pull a Romney and dodge the question. Simple questions, when was the last time?

  • DMAC

Whenever Bartell gets back, we can move Lee to cover the slot and cut Hanson.

  • jimmyball12

What era of football was it amy? When were they last in the bowl? Who was the quarterback on the opposing team? Answers AMY! I WANT ANSWERS!!

  • Macho Man Randy Savage

why the hate for Gannon? he is the best player the Raiders had in the last 30 some years.

If you like scholarship dudes cheer for the Grant Irons of the world, just dont hate on the MVPs; Gannon was NFL MVP.

  • jimmyball12

I loved Gannon bro, he was the man, i wish he came back to help the organization in some way..

You’re saying he’s gonna be back for Jax…or Atl.?

  • DJ Johnny

It seems the defense we’re playing is the “prevent”. Teams roll down the field as if it’s always one of those garbage time obligatory end of games drives.

You know; the kind we ALWAYS have given up in the past when we’re up by more than one TD late in the game?

The Raiders run Defense in yards per game, yards per carry, and ranking in the league, is the best it’s best in years.

    —————————————————–

The Raiders defense is on pace to give up the most yards in a season since 1962 500 yards, they have never gave up this many points/yards in the first 4 games. Spin it all you want, this is by far the worse Raiders defense.

  • DMAC

I hope DA and company are working on adding some power blocking plays for DMAC. If we can’t get the run game going we’re fked plain and simple.
As for the D, the Dline needs to step the fk up, because our secondary is non existence w/ all our injuries.

People forget that we lost both our starting corners, before week 2 and failed miserably at addressing the position w/ solid back-ups.

No. They CAN do it, but what the heck was Coco Crisp doing on the basket catch attempt?

Seemed it was just pure laziness…and it cost ‘em.

  • Macho Man Randy Savage

Getting Spencer back would be nice. It would be even better if we could find some pass rush.

Al wasn’t the only problem. With all due respect, the Raiders have a fan base that tends to drive away business. It’s not enough that Raider fans themselves shell out coin. It’s all about maximum profit. And remember, today it’s all about marketing to women. That is where the money is. Look at all of the NFL clothing commercials geared toward women, now. Showing women in the stands, etc. The Raider fan base, again, with all due respect, is detrimental to that market. Women who aren’t married to Raider fans, or part of the Raider Nation, see the whole Raider thing as “ghetto” and avoid it. That’s a red flag that LA businesses and politicians will certainly see.

    ============

Partially true, partially not. A lot of anti-establishment types loved the Raiders; film director John Carpenter, Jessica Alba, Fred Williamson, Carlos Santana, James Garner, Ice Cube and regular film stars like Tom Hanks. Its made for L.A. due to their colorful fan base and rebel streak, but business can ALWAYS modify that.

The casual fan of L.A. is PHONY AND TRENDY, thats why they weren’t selling out, and they lost a big chunk of who they were and what their identity is….they still are searching for that to this day. Jon Gruden got that back for a certain period of time…it carried over into that fateful SB year.

There are lots of successful business models, but it always, always includes WINNING. For that you need drafts, and for drafts you need a consistent front office. And that could take YEARS – remember the Niners with Terry Donahue in the front office? Then the Lions with Millen, Cleveland with Carmen Policy, and just now the Niners are back…Al Davis era is over.

  • DJ Johnny

Baseball is screwed up the way they handle where the games are played.

It SHOULD be the team with home
field advantage should have the 1st two games at home…then go on the road for two and come back for the 5th at home.

The A’s earned the home field with the better record but going on the road gives the advantage to Detroit allowing them to establish the first two wins and putting the pressure on Oak. to sweep at home.

2 and 2 w/ the last one at home whomever has the best record.

  • DJ Johnny

Are Raiders practicing today? Anyone know?

  • realtruraider

Get a grip? I was just letting JFB know that this is considered the worst defense in Raiders history after 4 games. He seems to think we are better than last year for some reason

Set up shop at the Raddison and got baked poolside. A few little honies were checking out the Lawg but I wasn’t down until after tip off

You KNOW the Beeech Diggity gots to keep his game face

Gots to admit, Nash & Jamison looked hella tight in Purple N Gold. Easily ran circles around the Warriors of the NBDL. Pretty sure the Defenders will smack them around this season

Yo, gots to run and take an emergency duece-dawg, be right back to fill you in on the afterparty (hint – I got totally laid)

With that FG, #Raiders have allowed more points (125) in 1st 4 games than they ever did with Al Davis. Only yrs with more 1961-62

  • DJ Johnny

Yeah I don’t like it either.
2 and 2 w/ the last one at home whomever has the best record.

Exactly, but baseball just does whatever the heck they want.

The Cubs in ’84 had a much better record than SD and EARNED homefield advantage but baseball decided to just snatch it away and have the Cubs host the first two games at home and the next 3 (if neccessary) at SD. Why? Cuz Cubs didn’t have lights yet and they wanted that game 5 to be ion prime time to maximize $$$.

As if the Cubs needed any more help to lose.

You get a better record you DESERVE the home field…period.

IMO the problem with the zbs as it pertains to the Raiders is they are THINKING too much about where they are supposed to be and what they’re supposed to do…rather than just playing.

  • realtruraider

In 16 games since Al Davis’ death #Raiders allowed 445 points and 6,208 yards _ more than they ever did in a season when he was alive

Al D Defense > Whatever the fk kinda Defense we are running

  • DMAC

People forget that we lost both our starting corners, before week 2 and failed miserably at addressing the position w/ solid back-ups.
The D will look more like week 1, once we get our starting corners healthy.
I’m more worried about the Offense. We need to get our Oline clicking on all cylinders quick!!!!

  • raiderkoolaid

I actually do think the run defense is a little better. The pass coverage is bad though. I am sure it would be better than it is if both starting corners weren’t hurt, but in the Denver game I thought there were plays when the coverage was decent but Manning had all day to set back there and wait until somebody came open. The pass rush was just non-existant. Kelly and company use to be good for at least a few disruptive plays in the backfield per game, but now they have lost a lot of their aggressiveness. I notice that the defensive jumping of sides penalties have all but ceased, but with it so has the pass rush. If the defense is to improve the pass rush has to improve.

  • DJ Johnny

    838,

Who ever thought we would be looking at Bresnahan as an upgrade?

Tarver…you should be insulted anybody even thinks this.

Get mad buddy and teach your guys to get mad too.

  • boss01

Somewhere Chuck Bresnahan is smiling right about now

  • DJ Johnny

I say we just blitz bascially every play against Atl.

Send Carter, Sho-Nice, and Burris every play.

Why not? I mean really, what do we have to lose?

    Blitz and Pray defense.

  • The Beeech Dawg

Man, that duece just barely crept out of the Beeech Hole. Was pushing so hard I started singing in Italian

Anyway we partied serious with Jordan Hill and Robert Sacre at the Elbow Room and ended up finger banging a few shorties in the poop chute

This moring when I smelled my fingers I thought it was from the Raddison buffet and barfed on my under pants

Soaked them digits in an ice cold mai tai all the way home, holla

Blitzing is high risk, high reward. I would rather have the risk than to die the slow torturous death of just watching to other team march the ball down the field, powerless to stop them.
