Remembering Al Davis a year later

Some of the people closest to Al Davis are still coming to grips with his loss last Oct. 8.

For a sense of how much things have changed in the past year, consider 25 of the 53 players on the Raiders roster one year ago today no longer are here, with Chimdi Chekwa on the practice squad.

part of me is intrigued by the prosepct of going back to la. it’s the 2nd largest media market in the country which means more coverage of the team.
i’d feel bad for the loyal raider fans in oakland but at the end of the day this is a business.

There is no replacing or modeling the way Al ran the organization and football operations. Impossible to replicate. Modernization will take time and the make-over has only just begun. The anniversary of AL’s death gives us an opportunity to reflect on his unwavering passion and commitment to excellence. True that recent times have been tough, but this belief was at his core and he was unapologetic for doing things his way. As a life long fan, I will miss the intrigue of wondering what bold decision Al was going to come up with next. He was unique. My hope is that we can find a way to hold on the mystique that is the silver and black.

#5 I think la la fans are to indifferent to pro NFL teams. There’s a reason la la land doesn’t have a pro football team. They got UCLA and USC. Basketball is the ‘cool’ thing and baseball barely gets by. After all the Dodgers attendance isn’t what it should be. Oakland needs to build the coliseum city. It would be good for the big 3 and the city of Oakland. It’s a no brainer. Keep the Raiders in Oakland. No guarantee of success in la la land.
And I can recall where Mr Davis once remarked he’d wished he stayed in Oakland. There’s a reason he came home. Just build coliseum city. Problems solved.

Whether they stay in Oakland or go to LA all I care about is if they win football games.
I have good memories of the LA Raiders…they weren’t an embarrassment or a punchline…outside of the 51-3 beatdown by Buffalo in the Afc Champ game which can be blamed at leat partially on Bo being injured the week prior.
By and large the LA Raiders were “winners” who were respected. Sue me, but I liked that. They weren’t a joke.
I know it has nothing to do with WHERE the Raiders played but the LA Raiders won’t go down as being “losers” on the field.
I’m not out in Cali. but i think i have somewhat of an understanding of what the Raiders mean to most of the hardcore fans in Oakland but something NEEDS to get done and I get the sense that the powers that be don’t have the same sense of urgency that Mark does.

I’m with Raider8… wondering what Mark is thinking. That LA stadium has been approved and, as far as I know, Mark is an LA guy. That’s where he hangs.
It really wouldn’t surprise me if he moved the team there. It would make him “The man”….
But, it would be a horrible mistake. Again. The first move is what cost the team their identity. They’ve spent all but a few years since then struggling.
LA has had, and lost, three different NFL teams. it doesn’t make sense to be the guy who wants to try it again….

That is all relative. At the time, the Raiders were losing respect. They were finishing 8-8 and with losing records for the first time in Davis’ tenure. The stadium was half empty most of the time. This is also when Raider fans began becoming a punchline themselves. Those were bad years. Not as bad as today, but they were bad.

If Al would have stepped away from GM duties around the time of the Marcus Allen debacle, he would have gone down as perhaps the greatest owner in the history of all sports. He wouldn’t carry the dual reputation of being part great owner and part embarrassment, that will unfortunately curse him forever. That Marcus Allen situation was the first really significant disaster in the organization that got high publicity, and it would turn out to be the first of many. He should have known then that general management in the NFL was a line of work that had passed him by. Should have given Ron Wolf total control at that point, and admitted that he just can’t do it anymore. That being said, Al’s accomplishments should be remembered, too. The NFL wouldn’t be what it is today if not for him, no doubt about it. RIP, Al Davis.

ABP, Al and Marcus’s feud was heating up around ‘85, ‘86. Didn’t blow up in the national media till a few years later, but it was a distraction in the organization even then. Read any book by former players and/or staff based on that era.

Doesn’t most marketable = most profitable? Do you really think that L.A. is going to fill a stadium for the Vikings or Jaguars? I guess the Rams or Chargers have a decent shot. It just seems that the Raiders have the best odds to sell out games in L.A.

Al and Stabler had a similar feud. Al hated the superstars that Wolf was more responsible for drafting. I don’t think it was anything against Wolf, I think it was more that Al liked everything great about the organization to be hand picked by him exclusively. Marcus says in his book he thinks the reason Al didn’t like him is because he was Wolf’s guy. Said he’d even heard that Al and Ron had a bet going, kind of like the movie Trading Places, about whether or not Marcus would be an impact. Yeah, Ron won the bet. Al wasn’t happy. Conjecture, of course. But when nobody knows, conjecture is all you have.

So, do you think the Chargers and Rams would be a huge success in L.A.? I don’t want the Raiders to move. But, I do think they have the best potential out of all the teams. L.A. knows it won’t have to deal with Al anymore. It’s a clean slate now.

The year after the Raiders won the Super Bowl in L.A., the attendance for their home opener was 47,000! It was not the Raiders performance that caused bad attendance. It was a crappy stadium in a crappy neighborhood. Put the Raiders in a new state of the art stadium, and I think attendance would be fine.

Al wasn’t the only problem. With all due respect, the Raiders have a fan base that tends to drive away business. It’s not enough that Raider fans themselves shell out coin. It’s all about maximum profit. And remember, today it’s all about marketing to women. That is where the money is. Look at all of the NFL clothing commercials geared toward women, now. Showing women in the stands, etc. The Raider fan base, again, with all due respect, is detrimental to that market. Women who aren’t married to Raider fans, or part of the Raider Nation, see the whole Raider thing as “ghetto” and avoid it. That’s a red flag that LA businesses and politicians will certainly see.

For me, following the Raiders was much more than football, it was an attitude, the Al Davis attitude, you know what I mean; don’t take crap from anyone, don’t be affraid to say or do what you believe in, the Raiders were always unique, sometimes for good and sometimes for bad, but man Al Davis certainly did it his way, like the Sinatra song and when you look back at your life, that’s the one thing they can never take away from an individual, the satisfaction of being your own man until the very end.
I thank Al Davis for modeling the Raiders that way, truth is, a big part of the Raiders died with Al, but that’s just nature, I hope Mark and Reggie never forget what made us the Raiders and make AD proud in their own way.

What I care about is that they have the best financial setup possible. For sentimental reasons, I want them to stay in Oakland, but I can’t deny we would be a huge attraction in LA. My favorite Raider(Bo) gave me great memories while they were there so I won’t complain if they go back. Plus, it would put the Lakers & Raiders in the same area again.

I was specifically talking about the offensive and defensive schemes Gruden had (we even ran zone defenses his first two years when Willie Shaw was DC). He was the last coach to have any real autonomy. After that, it was back to Al dictating defensive alignments, active and inactive lists, the assistants’ duties, and so forth.

The one thing the ZBS absolutely requires is a running back who will do exactly as he’s told. I was reading somebody’s analysis who mentioned that DMAC ruined a potential TD run because he didn’t hit the hole, but instead bounced around trying to find something else. Can’t do that in the ZBS.

RIP Al, hated many of his decisions, I’m a relatively young fan so I don’t remember the glory days. My glory days are the Gruden Raiders. But Al did things his way and he WAS the Raiders, he help build this league and he built my beloved OAKLAND RAIDERS. I will always respect him and the role he had in my team and the NFL. Overall it was the way Al managed the team, from a PR standpoint as well. Marcus Allen was a disaster, and it was the first of its magnitude to happen with the Raiders. It got the Raiders worse publicity than even the move to LA. And it would turn out to be the first of several embarrassing incidents for the team. What I care about is that they have the best financial setup possible. For sentimental reasons, I want them to stay in Oakland, but I can’t deny we would be a huge attraction in LA. I think we are on the same page. We want the team to be a successful franchise…period.
For selfish reasons a move to LA would allow me to see the Raiders more, as they would be more in demand being in the nations 2nd largest media market.
Would it help in attracting FA players who would be lured by the “Hollywood” atmosphere? I don’t know.

Overall it was the way Al managed the team, from a PR standpoint as well. Marcus Allen was a disaster, and it was the first of its magnitude to happen with the Raiders. It got the Raiders worse publicity than even the move to LA. And it would turn out to be the first of several embarrassing incidents for the team. Right MR, Bo Jackson was terrible publicity for this team in the late 80’s. Of course we started off the 90’s by going to the playoffs 3 of 4 years(1 7-9 season). Then we end 94 we go 9-7 and made the mistake of firing Shell, but we jumped out to a 8-2 start in 95 only to blow it. And after another .500 season we have the disaster of 97. Of course, 98-2002 was real tough years weren’t they? Can’t argue the the next 7 years, but at least we were starting to come out of our hole the last 2…I think I’d take that “disaster” over what Reggie/DA/Knapp/Hoffman has done to us in 1 off-season.
And how would Gannon know much about us during those years? It must be rough to be him. I’m sure he would get that cushy CBS job without Al ever signing him.*sarcasm*

It’s just going to take time to change around this mentality of losing and folding. Hiring well past their prime free agents who only want to cash a paycheck and waiting way too long on questionable developmental projects and rewarding them with big paychecks. I love Al, and he did build this team, and as much credit as he deserves for what he did in the early and middle years of this organization, he also deserves the credit for these final years.
We have been an utter joke for over a decade. That is horrendous leadership by an owner, hiring joke coaches and trying to control everything. You talk about us going to the Super Bowl 10 years ago. We went there because a coach decided he was going to do things his way! Then the owner fired him, and look at what happened! Al ruined this team for at least the past decade, and likely well beyond that.

What’s hilarious is you putting words into our mouths and making statements that Jon Gruden was the “only” coach who did things different just cuz he won. By the way, we traded Gruden Al was smart enough to keep the coaches around that were part of that success(unlike Reggie). BTW, Gruden, a good coach, sealed his fate in Tampa with all his personnel decisions. Once that D got old, he got exposed big time. And don’t be crediting him with that Super Bowl that was built by Dungy/McKay.
And I’m not justifying what Al has done post-2002, but at least we were rising from the ashes the last 2 years and Reggie has quickly put us back to the worst team in the league. And before, you start defending him how he has to do “his way” of things. I hope you remember what McDaniels did in Dungver & Pioli in KC, mainly trading for Cassell and putting the team in his hands.

Mike White. Bugel. Gruden. And these things take on a life of their own. After Marcus, the media was salivating for Davis drama. That’s why you don’t let those things get out of hand. That’s why Al Davis should have had the good sense to walk away from the GM position after Marcus. Even during the little bit of success they’ve had thereafter, it was still chaos. I’m in SD. I have been to Raider games in LA and continue to go to games in Oakland. That’s where they belong. I dont want to have to go to LA to see them play. The Raiders are the farthest thing from being “L.A”.
But I would probably end up getting season tickets if they did move. But it’s going to be the bolts up there.

Story has always been, depending on who you believe, that Al thought Marcus’s ego was out of control. Al didn’t want Allen being bigger than himself. There may have been a hold out by Marcus, I can’t remember. Al has always said that Marcus did something extremely shady, but he wouldn’t say what it was.

At first I was all but certain the raiders were front runners in moving to la because their history there makes the most logical sense, but then i heard the Nfl is charging whichever team that moves there 500 mill to take over that stadium and then i was convinced the raiders are staying. Joe Lacob purchased the warriors for 500 mill so for mark to move to la thats like him buying a whole new ball club… he doesn’t have that type of money, thats why he’s been in talks with the city of oaklnd as of late. f the raiders move itll shock.the he** out of me.

In 1986, Raiders were 8-2. They played against a young Randall Cunningham. The game was back and forth and went into OT. Raiders were in field goal position to win the game. Allen ran the ball up the middle and fumbled it. Eagles ran it all the way back to the 20 or something like that. Eagles won game. Raiders lost something like 5 or 6 straight. I think that had something to do with Al’s vendetta.

John Madden said as much too in some interview. He was asked for the umpteenth time what the F was up with the Raiders. He gave a great answer. The Raiders used to be tight knit. No infighting, at least between Al and management. Al and Valley, another story. It was the Raiders against the world. Madden didn’t go on to say it became the Raiders vs. Raiders, he stopped short of that. But what else could he have meant?

The Raiders and AD’s downfall began with his obsessive nature demonstrated in his dispute with Marcus Allen.
Halfway through the middle period is when this occurred. By that time AD could not tolerate anyone gaining more attention than him (AD). So when MA because a superstar AD drove a stake through the heart of MA’s relationship with the club, and sacrificed the winning of several more Superbowls to teach MA a lesson.
This when AD lost if psychologically. He went through QB’s and HC’s, a dime a dozen after Flores retired in 1987. AD no longer cared about his club or the game but was more focused on winning lawsuits, and personal vindictiveness against others.
Like a well seasoned drug addict AD could do nothing right and the Raiders have lost since that time period, the Gruden years notwithstanding. And even then AD sacrificed another Superbowl victory in getting rid of Gruden because AD’s ego-maniacal tendencies would not allow Gruden to gain more attention than him (AD).
I was living in Los Angeles and saw nearly every Raiders game at the Coliseum, and watched Bo and Marcus run together. I watched John Elway develop as the Broncos played the Raiders twice per year.
Once, in Brentwood, I saw MA at a Hamburger Hamlet there. He was dining alone and I approached his table and thanked him for so many great games. Marcus was very soft spoken, almost shy; he seemed lonely.
He invited me to sit with him and bought me a Heinechen and we drank together for awhile and talked about the Raiders MA’s performance in the playoffs and the Superbowls they won in 81 and 83. I didn’t sense that Marcus had a drug habit and I doubt seriously whether he was carrying on with OJ’s wife. Those are offhand rumors dispensed in order to justify AD’s treatment of MA, I believe.
After Gruden was terminated, in the final years, AD was a shell of himself and the laughing stock of the NFL. Prsonally I think the other partners should disgorge any Davis family involvement in the club in favor of a granite monument in the likeness of AD at the Coliseum.
For AD’s sins, in wasting tremendous opportunities, and his own talent, I feel AD should burn in hell.

Everybody tauts Reggie’s ability to draft then why do the packers defense look like Hot Garbage? The best player for the last 5 yeras on that defense is the player they got from Al Davis (Charles Woodson). My problem with this whole process is he keeps going back to that crap hole to get their scraps when no one else does. Yet everyone jumps on the players we release from the Steelers to Pat’s and I’m saying what’s wrong with this picture? Yet everyone on this blog will say the Packers have a better roster than we do. I seriously question that.

Mark has given him total control which was a HUGE MISTAKE.
Mark, if he wants out of MGMT, needed to hire a Pres. Of Football Ops and then a GM.
Instead he got cheap, made himself de facto Pres, even though he has ZERO GM history, he’ll, he only interviewed ONE CANDIDATE for the GM position, the exact opposite of what his dad would have done, which seems to be Marks only concern.

The good coaches in this league ADJUST their scheme to work with the players they have. As much as I hate to admit it the reason the donkos made it far last year was that Fox ADJUSTED his offense to Teblow’s strengths, i.e. running a pro style “option”
OK we tried this offense for four weeks now, we have a bye week IT IS TIME TO ADJUST this offense to its strengths.
Dennis Allen above everyone should know, because he was on that team last year. They would not have had a winning record if they would have kept teblow in the pocket, period!
I know it a new blocking system bla bla bla; but we need to incorporate what ever we can in this “system” to work towards CP, Dmac and the WRs’ talents. Hint: Down the field.

That defense had Raji, Shields, Williams, Matthews and plenty of others that were all draft picks.
Not saying The Reggie picked them all, but that CHAMPIONSHIP team, was a complete byproduct of years of successful drafts.

Yeah IMO that 2010 team was the best team they had since Reggie White. More than anything I thi nk it has been the QB’s as far as greta teams I don’t think they have had one. They just lucked upon two great QB’s one they traded for the other was a gift from the Forty Niners.

The only real player amongst them is Matthews the rest of them are just average. It’s a lot easier to play defense when you know the O will put up 30 pts.

I agreed about losing Bush, but I thought that it was a salary-cap issue.
The only thing was that once the all the air cleared we ended up with 7 million in cap space.

Worst thing Reggie has done is release or fail to resign guys who were invested in w/ draft picks and in Bush’s case, a couple years of development…he’s trying too hard to make it his team…Hue was right about Reggie gutting this team, it’ll be more evident next season.
Of course getting rid of guys is the easy part, replacing them with guys who can perform is the craft… Time will tell

VH30 Time tells all…ity’s safe to say his honeymoon is over. The bad releases and pickups are easy to see now. He got rid of the entire secondary almost and we can’t cover the ‘Golden Girls’ we have no pass rush and he’s rendered DMC to an afterthought. That is hard to do even if you were trying…period

I get why some are dis-crediting the 8 wins last season cuz it’s irritating when people keep bringing up how we were so close…and some don’t feel we were. But…u could look at it two ways. I saw a team that BLEW 4 games cuz of the defense; not one that was lucky to come away with 8 wins.
Just cuz a team wins a close game it still counts..even if they blow a lead and hang on at the end.
The 76 Raiders won more than a few close games and nobody is saying how 13-1 was “smoke and mirrors” cuz a few ganes “could’ve gone either way”. EVERY TEAM wins close games sometimes. You can’t take away wins just cuz it was close and “they could’ve just as easily lost”.
It’s extreme to say they “should’ve” lost. They didn’t. There were no games in that 8-8 that were won by a bogus call or a freak play. It was what it was.
You wanna say 8-8 “wasn’t good enough”? I agree.
The worst one was someone saying we can’t count the game at SD on Thurs. nite cuz “Palmer was playing in his backyard basically from his home in LaJolla”. WTH??? are you kidding me?

im sorry guys but whoever honestly can sit there and say we will finish the season at .500 doesnt know a dam thing about football.. the ONLY way that would happen is if the players listed on this article were still on our team, but they arent.
we will probably realisticly finish 3-13 or 5-11 AT BEST.. im interested in seeing how we look come draft time, especially with a high draft pick and possibly seeing reggie sell the house for as many draft picks as he can get..
rebuild mode hasnt even started yet, this is just a tank season for premier talent in the comming draft..

For us to beat Atl, all of the following would need to happen:
1) Dmac goes off for 100 plus yards rushing and 50 more receiving
2) we need to go no huddle every snap
3) we score on ST’s
4) defense gets 5 plus sacks and a few picks

I don’t care if the chargers are the best team in the division. I acknowledge that the whiners are a good team but I don’t care. This is a Raiders blog and all I care about is how The Raiders are, and right now they suck. Reggie took what wasn’t broke (the offense) and decided to fix it. I don’t know why. Maybe it was just to show that it is his team now. I don’t know. I hope that the charger loose so that if The Raiders do turn it around they will be close enough to have a chance. I am not optimistic about them turning it around, but stranger things have happened. I do think the saints defense is better that The Raiders though.

Wins can be:
Browns, Saints, Jags, KC twice, TB, and even Denver in Oakland. Plenty of teams can turn things around after 4 games.

MJD is pretty good. its not that hard to understand man, we suck this year, and we could learn a few things from an organization like the jags.. they have a beast rb, a young gun at qb, and a young stud wr all ready to be groomed and grow up together in this league.. we have a injury prone rb in the wrong offensive scheme, a wr that has rocks for hands, and a qb that is past his prime and looking like he wants to go back in retirement..
right now, the jags are the better team without a doubt, there is no denying it.

Gabbert is awful, MJD is only getting mop-up yards, and I assume you are talking about Blackmon, who has zero TD’s this season and 10 catches through 5 games, and they just lost by 40 at home.
They are the worst team in football. They score less points per game than us, actually less points per game than the Bed and Breakfast offense.

That is a dire prediction. I’d like to embrace that if I could to save myself from disappointment but I was holding out hope that DA was gonna prove himself to be a guy who could make lemonade out of lemons.
On paper…we have three probowlers on our d-line (Carter, Seymour and Kelly was an alternate right?).
Then u have the # 2 pick in the draft with Curry and then a guy who is “supposed” to be pretty good in Branch and guy who (before his injury) was supposed to be one of the better unsung corners in the league in Bartell.
Then on offense you have a potential gamebreaker in DMAC, a decent QB in Palmer, and up and comers like DMoore and DHB at WR. In addition to an emerging stud TE in Myers.
I’m just sayin’…on PAPER you should be able to make a case that you have a decent roster.
Then… they play the games and it all goes out the window.

First, hate to admit it but I have nothing against chief fans. I went to KC to watch the raiders play one year and they were friendly, accommodating, at the end, we won and a lot of them were shaking my hand and giving me five.

I’ve gone to about 7 Raider games at KC and say for the most part this is true. I’ve had some bad experiences too though.
The Xmas eve game about 5 years ago was horrible. It was about zero degrees wind chill and the only people that showed up were drunk and pissed at the world. I don’t know how many times I said “Merry Christmas” to some drunken toothless slob yelling “Raiduhs suck” at me… fer instance.
Most of the real fans probably just dumped their tickets.

It’s the only game on the schedule that I see as an automatic loss. All the others I could see actually having some hope for.
Last wk reminded me of GB gane last yr. I wanted to turn it off but I had to make sure we weren’t gonna set any records for losing margin.
I was seriously concerned at halftime of that game that GB might end up putting up a 60 burger on us…or worse.
I don’t why, but i feel like once they bench McClain we will magically get better on D. It’s more than a hunch.

Boy I’d be upset if I were sick enough to be Charger fan tonight. The fix was in! Saints were gonna win come hell or high water said the refs. What blatant calls against chargers wow. How about that roughing the passer that took away Bree’s pick six? Or those weird offensive pass IF against gates at end of game?
And poor Gaither’s back was killing him at end and stupid HC didn’t bother to take him out costing them. But how about those regular refs, ha?

Raidrtalk, I agree. UNLESS we turn out to be the same team we were against Denver…then ALL of those games look like losses, but even the game at Baltimore doesn’t look as daunting. KC almost beat ‘em to day and Ravens barely beat Cleveland last week.
Unfortunately we’ll be 1-4 going into the “winnable” games.
That’s what happens when you pis away those “winnable” games against SD and Miami.

The good news is that we have the bungels and the browns back-to-back. Those are winnable games down the stretch. We still got the qeefs twice, Tampon bay at home, jagwires, and the imploding kam newtons.
That’s 7 winnable games, 8-8 is still within reach. The question is, without a wildcard, do we want those wins or do we want to enter the Geno Smith sweepstakes or put ourselves in a position to trade down for more 1st round pickaroos?

Raiders coaches should have used this bye week to demote Knapp and promote Saunders with a mandate to go back to running more power trap, counter and pulling guard run plays with very little zone blocking involved and the ditching of the zone stretch play.
Saunders would need to call more set screens like him and Hue did last year and concentrate on getting the ball to the fast play makers in space and utilize more matchup problems. 3rd down and red zone play calling need to be improved.
Of course McK and Allen are stubborn and stupid and they will not make these necessary changes to try and save the season. They will preach the same old non sense like patience and execution and Knapp is a good play caller all that typical bull crap.
The defense is the defense, they will continue to stink overall, especially the secondary.

The Raiders and AD’s downfall began with his obsessive nature demonstrated in his dispute with Marcus Allen. Disease of AD’s mind began early.
Halfway through the middle period is when this occurred. By that time AD could not tolerate anyone gaining more attention than him (AD). So when MA because a superstar AD drove a stake through the heart of MA’s relationship with the club, and sacrificed the winning of several more Superbowls to teach MA a lesson.
This is when AD lost it psychologically. He went through QB’s and HC’s, a dime a dozen after Flores retired in 1987. AD no longer cared about his club or the game but was more focused on winning lawsuits, and personal vindictiveness against others.
Like a well seasoned drug addict AD could do nothing right and the Raiders have lost since that time period, the Gruden years notwithstanding. And even then AD sacrificed another Superbowl victory in getting rid of Gruden because AD’s ego-maniacal tendencies would not allow Gruden to gain more attention than him (AD).
I was living in Los Angeles and saw nearly every Raiders game at the Coliseum, and watched Bo and Marcus run together. I watched all the greats and saw John Elway develop as the Broncos played the Raiders twice per year.
Once, in Brentwood, I saw MA at a Hamburger Hamlet there. He was dining alone and I approached his table and thanked him for so many great games. Marcus was very soft spoken, almost shy; he seemed lonely.
He invited me to sit with him and bought me a Heinechen and we drank together for awhile and talked about the Raiders MA’s performance in the playoffs and the Superbowls they won in 81 and 83. I didn’t sense that Marcus had a drug habit and I doubt seriously whether he was carrying on with Nicole Brown Simpson. Those are offhand rumors dispensed in order to justify AD’s treatment of MA, I believe.
After Gruden was terminated, in the final years, AD was a shell of himself and the laughing stock of the NFL. Prsonally I think the other partners should disgorge any Davis family involvement in the club in favor of a granite monument in the likeness of AD at the Coliseum.
That is the most AD deserves for squandering years of opportunity, and even his (AD’s) own talent.

No, no, they can’t and won’t do it. Look at how they talked McClain up during the preseason which was tantamount to lying directly to our face.
McClain received a $50M contract with $24 million guaranteed as a signing bonus. What onus does McClain have to perform at all after singly earning his signing bonus: none at all.
His lack of cooperation regarding interviews is the same thing as him throwing us his middle finger.
Let’s hope he gets jail time and rots on an Alabama chain gang.

However, nothing lasts forever and what is gone is gone, and that is the Raiders’ of yore: however, the philosophy lives on and moves forward.

Right……and Reggie’s skill and business acumen are demonstrated by him hiring his brother as a scout, holding absolutely no professional experience.
And what about DA hiring his best pal Knapp as OC. Dozens and dozens of posters protested that one in the blog before the pre-season ever began. Those posters predicted utter failure for Knapp and his “scheme.” They were correct.
How about Gruden; he would have come back as either HC or GM, yet Mark Davis waited too long.
We hate it when the coaches and the GM lie directly to our faces. And that is mostly what Reggie and DA did, regarding a number of different matters.
Why not just forfeit the season and get rid of at least 20 non and sub-performing players, and bring previews, in and out; a few of them will inevitably stick.
Why not give TP some playing to see if he should go or stay when the wheels come completely off like they did in the Denver game?
That’s just common sense. That’s why I say neither Reggie nor DA have any talent. They need to go too.

The 2010 Raiders (Hue’s 1st as play-caller) were coming of a 2009 season where they averaged 12.3 ppg for the entire season, so in 2010 after 4 games they were averaging 19 ppg, a 6.7 point improvement.
The 2012 Raiders (Knapp’s 1st year back) were coming of a 2011 season where they averaged 22.4 ppg for the season, so in 2012 we’re averaging 16.8, that’s 5.6 less.
In short, after Hue’s first 4 games he had improved scoring by an average of 6.7 points from the year before, after Knapp’s first 4 games we average 5.6 less than the previous season.
Big difference.

Wrong, there won’t be another AD because times have changed, we get it, Al’s legend and place in history are set and that’s good enough.
Reggie has no cardinal sin so far, some of us think Hue should have gotten a 2nd season under Reggie’s control to try and have this team take the next step, but that ship has sailed.
Reggie has plenty of time left to make us change our mind, here’s hoping he does because it would be cool if a former Raider hand-picked by AD’s son and former Lieutenants took this team back to the glory days.

Not sure how anyone can make a determination about ANY player, coach or front-office guy, after 4 games.
Those that have, have an agenda.
Realistically, every player should get 2-3 years, each coach at least a few games into his 2nd year to see if changes and adjustments have been made, and front office should probably be looking at 3-4 years if things are moving in the right direction or not.
I know that flies in the face of so many in here who want to run around being right SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad, that they will basically admit to rooting against their “team”, but instead root for their opinion.

People make it seem like EVERY 8-8 team just cadillacs into the playoffs the next season.
Here are your 8-8 teams from last year:
Chiefs, Raiders, Jets, Chargers, Bronco’s, Bears, Eagles, Cowboys, Cardinals. Titans were 9-7.
Cardinals and Bears are the only team that has taken a leap realistically, and the Bears were only 8-8 due to injuries. The Donkeys blew everything up, and added a zillion dollar QB, to not much better results yet.
Chiefs, Raiders, Jets, Titans and Cowboys are all worse this year. Tough to tell on the Eagles, because their record has been better than their play.

No, I think they’ve moved the ball MORE effectively with him being used occassionally and CK’s added dimension has been a POSITIVE.
Even on the play he fumbled, there was a substantial gain before he turned it over.
And I maintain that Tits and Krapp are idiots for keeping TP inactive every single week.
Guess the Raid offense has been humming along and couldn’t use another dimension.
Wouldn’t want to give opposing defenses something else to prepare for besides those dynamic stretch runs that are working so well.

A lot of day-to-day gyrations in NBA fantasy leagues that are tough to keep up on with a traveling sales job, so I can’t guarantee a huge commitment like in Dell’s FFL.

We got an undrafted FA in the WR rotation, a couple of DB’s we ALREADY picked up off the scrap heap, as well as LB’s.
There is nobody else out there who can help ANY team out, other than maybe some ST guys.
No teams are picking up contributors 4-5 games into the season.
Time to assess what we have, rather than roll in some scrub to realize what everyone else in the league already knew, that he can’t play.

“Mistake” isn’t the righ-word, I just think the risk/reward is not as positive for the team as others.
Like defensively with the Giants and their 4 man rush. They can blitz sometimes, but what’s the risk/reward? They can generate a pass rush most of the time without blitzing.
Same with the 49ers. They can move the ball without that stuff, so they put themselves in a tough position if he fumbles and turns it over.
Just my take. 49ers were the first time EVER IN NFL HISTORY to rush for 300 yards and pass for 300 yards in the same game.

It would help tremendously in that I no longer have to watch them game after game with zero production to show for…you can’t trade both but Des Bryant can replace either one of them. Time to get rid of McClain too. It is simply addition by subtraction mainly. The Curry trade brought a spark last year, maybe there is someone out there that can come in a provide a spark. Maybe Carter is that guy who knows. I know this much, this defense can’t stop anybody, dead last in the league right now, something has to be done.

After Atlanta and going 1-4 it doesn’t eliminate mathematically but basically does.
I remember Pittsburgh starting 1-4 one yr. and then went on to go 10-4…but that was Pittsburgh coming off a SB season.
Having trouble latching on to any other team to “root” for..you know…like all us Raider fans do when it comes around playoff time.
With me, it’s always rooting AGAINST certain teams to win rather than rooting FOR any team in particular.

Well, it was a good time for a bye week for me as a fan.
Slept in, prepared homemade Belgian waffles for the wife, which we enjoyed with mango, raspberries, real maple syrup, OJ, and espresso.
Then had some epic sex, the kind you write home about.
Took a little nap, then wife and I tag teamed sealing the new fence.

I know a bartender/recreational 7man football ref from north philly (close to where i live). He knew Gannon and his dad throughout his life, grew up with him. Yep, Had a great couple of days in a cabin on the river…Peace, quiet, hot tub. Watched ALOT of college ball, it was a great weekend for that. As for the D, the Dline needs to step the fk up, because our secondary is non existence w/ all our injuries.
People forget that we lost both our starting corners, before week 2 and failed miserably at addressing the position w/ solid back-ups.

The casual fan of L.A. is PHONY AND TRENDY, thats why they weren’t selling out, and they lost a big chunk of who they were and what their identity is….they still are searching for that to this day. Jon Gruden got that back for a certain period of time…it carried over into that fateful SB year.
There are lots of successful business models, but it always, always includes WINNING. For that you need drafts, and for drafts you need a consistent front office. And that could take YEARS – remember the Niners with Terry Donahue in the front office? Then the Lions with Millen, Cleveland with Carmen Policy, and just now the Niners are back…Al Davis era is over.

The Cubs in ‘84 had a much better record than SD and EARNED homefield advantage but baseball decided to just snatch it away and have the Cubs host the first two games at home and the next 3 (if neccessary) at SD. Why? Cuz Cubs didn’t have lights yet and they wanted that game 5 to be ion prime time to maximize $$$.
As if the Cubs needed any more help to lose.
You get a better record you DESERVE the home field…period.

IMO the problem with the zbs as it pertains to the Raiders is they are THINKING too much about where they are supposed to be and what they’re supposed to do…rather than just playing.

I actually do think the run defense is a little better. The pass coverage is bad though. I am sure it would be better than it is if both starting corners weren’t hurt, but in the Denver game I thought there were plays when the coverage was decent but Manning had all day to set back there and wait until somebody came open. The pass rush was just non-existant. Kelly and company use to be good for at least a few disruptive plays in the backfield per game, but now they have lost a lot of their aggressiveness. I notice that the defensive jumping of sides penalties have all but ceased, but with it so has the pass rush. If the defense is to improve the pass rush has to improve.

I was hoping McClain would turn into a player in this new defense, he looked damn good in the game against SD, but ever since then he hasn’t looked that good, I know he had an ankle in that game and then a concussion in Miami. You all better find some patience. This offseason will be the time to judge on the worthiness. The short leash is understandable for as dismal as this team has been for so long but this team has been average or worse for A LONG time. Like decades long minus gruden. No money, no draft picks. It’s like Reggie got handed a pocket full of quarters and directions to a fire sale and they said go make us a winner. And here’s some more bad news for you. The depth on this team is brutal which means even more bad news for the immediate future. There are only so many draft picks and free agents and when youdo get them it takes them time to build chemistry. Reggie could have pieced together an 8-8, 9-7 team this year but that’s what this franchise has been doing for the last 25 years. Patching holes with duct tape. Hanging on to overpriced talent at the sacrifice of a solid foundation.

Mark needs to be real with us and say he is L.A. bound. sabatoging our team with incompetent staff is not wise. Were football fans not first graders( no diss on lil people) we can sniff out lack of effort(JRuss)a mile away and Mark Davis find the wackest, weakest,cheapest GM&Coach money can buy. Atleast with Al,who was about put the best marketable product out there for winning and when he didnt like the current situation he said it.Rest in Power Al D
