Remembering Al Davis a year later

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, October 7th, 2012 at 7:57 am in Oakland Raiders.

Some of the people closest to Al Davis are still coming to grips with his loss last Oct. 8.

Here’s a link to a Bay Area News Group story story on the death of the icon and what some of his friends miss about him.

Here are some additional notes and quotes posted on the Web from a few players about Davis . . .

For a sense of how much things have changed in the past year, consider 25 of the 53 players on the Raiders roster one year ago today no longer are here, with Chimdi Chekwa on the practice squad.

Here’s a breakdown of the changes from the Oct. 9 game against the Houston Texans:

Starters gone: C Samson Satele, TE Kevin Boss, QB Jason Campbell, FB Manase Tonga, CB Stanford Routt, CB DeMarcus Van Dyke, LB Kamerion Wimbley, LB Quentin Groves,

Reserves: QB Kyle Boller, RB Michael Bush, RB Rock Cartwright, WR Louis Murphy, WR Chaz Schilens, CB Chimdi Chekwa, CB Chris Johnson, CB Joe Porter, CB Ron Parker, S Jerome Boyd, LB Darryl Blackstock, LB Bruce Davis, OT Joseph Barksdale, OT Bruce Campbell, OT Stephon Heyer, DT John Henderson, DE Jarvis Moss, DE Trevor Scott.

What adjustments did Tarver make in the game against Denver?

  • VanHeathen30

This coaching staff is raw and green, I’m crazy to expect anything different from them.
We’ll be out coached all season, and probably most of 2013 too while they learn their craft.
Reggie will stock pile draft picks and get to create ‘His’ team, whatever that team might look like is the mystery.

  • raidertalk

Damn IT! Just saw the highlights of Bears v. Jags.
I be damned if I didn’t see Michael Bush catch a pass and JUMP OVER A GUY to get more yards! DAMN it he never did that with us. I know at the time there was salary cap issues but we could have used him nowadays!

  • Kiwi_Blade

Defense needs some wholesale adjustments – not just tinkering…

  • raidertalk

Does anyone know exactly what that thing is on Drew Brees’ face? Scar or Bmark?

They just showed Crennel and Harbaugh hugging at midfield after the Chiefs lost, and right in front of them, there was a Chiefs player with his arm around a Ravens player, cracking up laughing.

    =========

Not rivals & Crennel will be seeking a DC gig soon

If they had a football IQ test to join this blog,I wouldnt have to argue with most of these morons.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

That’s right! You wouldnt be allowed to post. lol

For AD’s sins, in wasting tremendous opportunities, and his own talent, I feel AD should burn in hell.

Karma is a wonderful things sometimes. You better watch your step.

    You are human scum.

  • VanHeathen30

If you want Al to “burn in hell”…
Just give him a season ticket to the next 3 years of Raider Football.
What ‘ Junior’ has done to this franchise is a hell of it’s own.

  • Priesttj12

Everybody tauts Reggie’s ability to draft then why do the packers defense look like Hot Garbage? The best player for the last 5 yeras on that defense is the player they got from Al Davis (Charles Woodson). My problem with this whole process is he keeps going back to that crap hole to get their scraps when no one else does. Yet everyone jumps on the players we release from the Steelers to Pat’s and I’m saying what’s wrong with this picture? Yet everyone on this blog will say the Packers have a better roster than we do. I seriously question that.

Is Reggie a fraud?? or is he the real deal?

  • raider till i die

Hey so not wish bad on a man all ready dead Al Davis was a great man he did. Alot of good for the NFL MIT so great for the raiders in his late years but give him he’s respect do not wish harm for somebody gone WTF is wrong with u

  • Plunketthead

Sean looks like he has been to the face distortion doctor. Nothing like disfiguring yourself so your eyes stay open

  • VanHeathen30

Priest…I think there was a reason Reggie was an assistant for 18 years.
Mark has given him total control which was a HUGE MISTAKE.
Mark, if he wants out of MGMT, needed to hire a Pres. Of Football Ops and then a GM.
Instead he got cheap, made himself de facto Pres, even though he has ZERO GM history, he’ll, he only interviewed ONE CANDIDATE for the GM position, the exact opposite of what his dad would have done, which seems to be Marks only concern.
So YEAH, I think Reggie is a FRAUD!

  • Priesttj12

    sorry (touts)

  • 303Raider

Watching the Donks lose was nice.

Saints win big tonight vs Chargers.

For heather reason I think we can beat The Falcons next week!

  • 303Raider

OMG it’s been 4 weeks and some of you want Reggie out?

    Lol….some of you are retarded….

  • raidertalk

The good coaches in this league ADJUST their scheme to work with the players they have. As much as I hate to admit it the reason the donkos made it far last year was that Fox ADJUSTED his offense to Teblow’s strengths, i.e. running a pro style “option”

OK we tried this offense for four weeks now, we have a bye week IT IS TIME TO ADJUST this offense to its strengths.

Dennis Allen above everyone should know, because he was on that team last year. They would not have had a winning record if they would have kept teblow in the pocket, period!

I know it a new blocking system bla bla bla; but we need to incorporate what ever we can in this “system” to work towards CP, Dmac and the WRs’ talents. Hint: Down the field.

  • Just Fire Baby

2010 the Packers won a Super Bowl with the #2 ranked defense.

They also won that Super Bowl, with Charles Woodson on the sidelines.

  • Priesttj12

VH30 I’m starting to feel the same……sick feeling. This could be a long tough stretch boys. If he gets rid of T Pryor he will leave me no reason to continue to root for this team because he will have buried it with the owner.

  • 303Raider

Charles didn’t play in the 2nd half of that SB…

    Reggie needs time….

  • Just Fire Baby

That defense had Raji, Shields, Williams, Matthews and plenty of others that were all draft picks.

Not saying The Reggie picked them all, but that CHAMPIONSHIP team, was a complete byproduct of years of successful drafts.

  • Priesttj12

Yeah IMO that 2010 team was the best team they had since Reggie White. More than anything I thi nk it has been the QB’s as far as greta teams I don’t think they have had one. They just lucked upon two great QB’s one they traded for the other was a gift from the Forty Niners.

  • VanHeathen30

    Reggie needs more than time…
He reminds me too much of Matt Millen, but with a slower speech delivery.
Luckily for Reggie, he’s got time, maybe he can find an Offense and a Defense, he’ll why not some special teams coverage whilenhe’s at it…

  • Just Fire Baby

I could see calling it luck getting one QB, but twice IN A ROW is not luck.

Again, none of that could be due to Reggie McKenzie. Who knows really?

But the Packers are a tremendously run organization, if McKenzie fails here, it’s not because he was brought up in the personnel business by some hacks.

  • Priesttj12

The only real player amongst them is Matthews the rest of them are just average. It’s a lot easier to play defense when you know the O will put up 30 pts.

  • raidertalk

Yeah I’m not gonna give Reggie his pink-slip until I’ve seen him have one draft with an actual 1st rounder ans some other picks…not much to glean from that last razor thin draft. Burris even appears to be a good pick up.

  • Just Fire Baby

It’s a lot easier to play defense when you know the O will put up 30 pts.

    *******************************

The 2010 Packers averaged 1.5 points more per game offensively than we did last year.

Let’s not rewrite history here, that was an awesome defense.

  • Priesttj12

I don’t know how good or bad reggie is YET! I do know and said as much when he let Bush go I called it a’dumb decision’ I stand by that now. That was extremely stupid. But everyone on here exclaimed ‘we can replace Bush easy’ I told you guys it would come back to haunt us. If any of you were honest you’d admit as much.

    ———————————————————–
I agreed about losing Bush, but I thought that it was a salary-cap issue.
The only thing was that once the all the air cleared we ended up with 7 million in cap space.
I guess half of life is timing…

  • Just Fire Baby

Bush is averaging like 3.4 ypc, he isn’t exactly lighting it up in Chicago.

Satele right now is looking like the biggest offseason lost, in all honesty.

  • AmysInCharge

Priest,..you must admit, some people just dont have what it takes to be in management. Reggie went for Wolfs coffee, drove him around. Reggie is maybe qualified to drive a Greyhound bus, thats about it. But Mark could not care less, hes sifting through the best offers for what he inherited,…losing doesnt bother Mark, he hates football…thats just the truth. I have inside knowledge and you do not.

  • Priesttj12

JFB his YPC average is a by product the situations they run him in. What don’t you guys get about this he is a shortyardage/goaline back. How long have you been watching football? Your big back always averages less YPC his job description dictates that. Get a clue!!!

  • VanHeathen30

Worst thing Reggie has done is release or fail to resign guys who were invested in w/ draft picks and in Bush’s case, a couple years of development…he’s trying too hard to make it his team…Hue was right about Reggie gutting this team, it’ll be more evident next season.
Of course getting rid of guys is the easy part, replacing them with guys who can perform is the craft… Time will tell

  • AmysInCharge

I for one and rooting for the Raiders to not only lose, but lose in embarrassing fashion,..by the way, you guys see any of that Niner game?…WOW…the exact opposite of the Raiders. ;)

  • 303Raider

Losing Bush is not an issue. Running teams don’t win SB’s.

Like JFB said, Satele was the biggest loss so far this year.

  • 303Raider

Amy, why do you blog on here if you’re. Niners fan?

  • VanHeathen30

Where does the 7 Million$ go?
Is Mark skimming some money to put in his pocket before he sells and pays off the other owners? Looks like a salary dump season so far…
Kept just a few big contracts to make it look like something else, but very suspicious at this point.

  • Al_is_theraiders

as of right now he is a huge fail…

  • AmysInCharge

    303,…did I say I was a fan?…I said they are awesome,..you disagree?

  • VanHeathen30

Teams that can’t run the ball often have trouble passing the ball…see our game last week.

  • Just Fire Baby

Not sure where the $7 million comes from, it was reported that after we restructured TK that we were around 2 million under the cap.

  • raidertalk

Bush 3.4 ypc–isn’t that better than McFaddne so far!?

  • Priesttj12

VH30 Time tells all…ity’s safe to say his honeymoon is over. The bad releases and pickups are easy to see now. He got rid of the entire secondary almost and we can’t cover the ‘Golden Girls’ we have no pass rush and he’s rendered DMC to an afterthought. That is hard to do even if you were trying…period

  • http://www.raiders.com Raider O

DMAC is healthy, but we can’t run the ball well due to our OL’s poor play, so I’m not sure what Bush can do to help us.

  • raidertalk

THe tommy kelly restructure and then the Branch contract put us further below the cap look it up…

  • AmysInCharge

I want the Raiders to lose, badly, get laughed at nationally,..(thats already happening),…go 1-15,..then maybe things will change, as in ownership,…Mark is a scumbag,…been in rehab several times,..lives in LA fulltime,…some east bay billionaire needs to buy the team and keep them in Oakland. However the truth is they likely are heading back to LA,…my guess is 2014. The Raiders have one more year on lease after this one,..you do the math.

  • Just Fire Baby

2.3 million under the cap, before his restructure, which was the first week of the season.

What do you do with cap space once the season starts? Sign Joselio Hanson to $4 million a year?

Bush 3.4 ypc–isn’t that better than McFaddne so far!?

    ****************************************************

Yes Sir! that speaks volumns and if it doesn’t change in a hurry I really believe Mark Davis will say something like. Someone has to go I know one thing DMC is a HUGE fan of DMC, they better get that one fixed………..period

  • Just Fire Baby
  • AmysInCharge

Priest,…Reggie is dimwitted,…Mark never even interviewed any others,..hes also dimwitted. TJ you catch the Niner game today?…dayum! ;)
