Raiders back at practice after four-day break
By Steve Corkran
Monday, October 8th, 2012 at 12:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders are on the practice field once again, fresh from a four-day break during their bye week. They are going through the paces at almost full strength and without any new players.
The three players not at practice are: right offensive tackle Khalif Barnes (groin), cornerback Shawntae Spencer (foot) and tight end Richard Gordon (hamstring).
Of course, linebacker Aaron Curry (knees) and cornerback Ron Bartell (shoulder) also aren’t at practice, but they aren’t eligible to return from their injuries yet.
– Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey looks as if he has made a swift recovery from the concussion and neck strain he suffered against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 23.
He is running a slew of routes, running hard and doing everything the other receivers are asked to do in practice.
Therefore, it’s logical to assume that Raiders coach Dennis Allen envisions Heyward-Bey playing Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. Heyward-Bey missed the game against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 30.
– With Barnes and Spencer still sidelined, it’s likely that Willie Smith will make yet another start at right offensive tackle and Michael Huff at left cornerback this Sunday.
– The Raiders are off Tuesday, the normal day off for NFL players in a typical week. It will be interesting to hear what Allen says after practice about what he and his assistant coaches gleaned from their top-to-bottom evaluation during the bye week.
Allen said he and his staff were about midway through the process last Wednesday. They had four more days to break down videotape, talk amongst themselves and figure out ways to solve the myriad issues that cropped up the first four games.
From here, it appears as if Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie are confident that the problems are fixable and that the players currently on the 53-man roster are capable of getting the job done, given the Raiders didn’t add any new players in the eight days since they last played a game.
Then again, it’s possible that the Raiders will have in some free agents Tuesday and use that time to make a decision on whether to churn up the roster some more.

The Beeech Dawg,
Yeah……I finished…..and nothing. And nothing under pube stylist either.
Here is what I suggest Beeech: you should talk to the studios and procur a screenplay development deal. You can use the Beeech Dawg persona you created for this blog, which would be perfect: Beeech is a small time rap artist/producer/sound designer, etc., who gets hung up innocently in a terrorist plot. Of course Beeech thwarts the terrorists and plot becomes a hero, and subsequently makes it big time in the entertainment industry. Of course the film would be comedy/action/adventure.
Since it could be produced in real time without much use sound sets etc. it would be relatively inexpensive for a studio.
Go for it Beeech, you do have a talent for words and a gifted imagination. Use them productively.
October 8th, 2012 at 12:43 pm
All we need to take the division:
- Get the DBs playing out of their mind (low talent).
- Learn to play multiple D’s after not allowing it for 2 decades.
- Find a few pass-rushers.
- Scrap the running scheme entirely and draw up one that works.
- Have our linebackers create plays somehow.
- Have the Broncos and Chargers not go on a winning tear vs easier opponents.

You all better find some patience. This offseason will be the time to judge on the worthiness. The short leash is understandable for as dismal as this team has been for so long but this team has been average or worse for A LONG time. Like decades long minus gruden. No money, no draft picks. It’s like Reggie got handed a pocket full of quarters and directions to a fire sale and they said go make us a winner. Reggie could have pieced together an 8-8, 9-7 team this year but that’s what this franchise has been doing for the last 25 years. Patching holes with duct tape. Hanging on to overpriced talent and gambling on draft picks at the sacrifice of a solid foundation. Here’s a list for you:
Wiz
Van Dyke
Barksdale
McClain
Houston
Veldheer
Heyward-Bey
Mitchell
Shaugnessy
McFadden
Russell
Z Miller
Moses
Henderson
Huff
Howard
McQuistan
Fab Washington
Routt
Walter
Morrison
Gallery
Grove
Schweigert
Those are our round 1-3 draft picks for the last 9 years and mind you we’ve picked in the top 16 each of those years. That list should be the foundation of the Oakland Raiders. Look at that pathetic list. Not one pro bowler and only 1 player has had impactful statistics in McFadden. Thats 25 players. That’s .004%. The could have probably done better picking names out of a hat!
Bottom line. Give these guys some time to clean up the mess. Bash knapp all you want because he shouldn’t be here. Why this team resorts to rehiring past coordinators I just can’t understand but give these new guys a shot to do their job. In time we will see whether they turn out to be jimmy Johnson or Matt millen.
October 8th, 2012 at 12:55 pm
WE’RE PRACTICING!!
October 8th, 2012 at 12:56 pm
There are a few reasons why this franchise is a mess and have sucked for so long. However the main reason is bad drafts in the first spot. Busts.
I dont have to remind you about the guys we could have had.
Brayton
Gallery
Huff
Fabian Washington
McClain
JaMarcus Russell
Heywerd Bey (Has been average to productive but no where near the 7th spot)
ASO (has been are only 1st round pick worth its spot. True number 1 pick we let get away)
DMAC (has yet to play a full season started of slow but is a great back to near dynamic type back the last two years but now stuck back with NAP. dayyyum shame
Seymour (Trading a 1st round pick for him when the Raiders were more then a DT away from the playoffs)
Carson palmer 1st round pick / 2nd round pick ( trading for palmer who has shown no real big big upgrade over Jason Campbell. was not Als fault but still set this franchise back in terms of guys to build on )
October 8th, 2012 at 12:56 pm
I dont know why you guys set yourselves up for disapointment this is team is going nowhere fast. we fired the coach who turned our O around and had the players to fit his scheme, now we must find guys who fit the wco and palmer is not the guy and dmac is not a good zbs rb so basically we must start all over on O and that is goanna take at least a year or two not to mention the holes whe have to fix on D. Its probably better that we just tank this season and get some picks and see if Reggie really has any magic to work. I for one want to see what TP can do with the starters for a good 8 game stretch so we can really see if can actually run this team imo he cant be THAT far behind Cam and RGiii.

Brown reflects on anniversary of Davis’ passing
ALAMEDA — Al Davis passed away one year Monday and according to one of his closest confidantes, it does not seem that long ago that the former Raiders owner was still lording over 1220 Harbor Bay Parkway. In fact, even with the Raiders’ new regime, Davis’ presence is still felt. Which should not be a surprise.
“I’m here everyday and the organization is still going strong and it just seems like a couple of weeks ago, when you look at it,” Hall of Fame cornerback Willie Brown told CSNCalifornia.com last week.
willie_brown_raiders_large_mark_davis.jpg
“The impact that he had on this organization, it’s hard to believe that he’s not still here making some of the decisions that need to be made and should have been made and have not been made.”
Brown was a longtime coaching staff member but has transitioned into being a team ambassador.
“But surely, we all miss him because of his ideas and things,” Brown said of Davis. “You believed in him and he believed in you and he hired you to do a job and you did your job and those kinds of things. And when you don’t have a person with that impact and that hands-on, that push a button on you and makes you do all the right things, it’s not the same, of course.
“Because he was involved in every facet, every position in this organization. He did everything, you know? And it’s difficult for a person trying to replace him — he’ll never be replaced — but the point is that it’s hard to fill all the positions that he had here, you know? I mean, he emptied the trash, he drove the car, he lifted weights, he went in the classroom, he went in the meeting room, he was everywhere.”

Posted a few days ago by Paul G, but finally got a chance to read it.
Wisniewski breaks down the ZBS
ALAMEDA — As a predominantly power-blocking team last season, the Raiders were the No. 7-ranked rushing team in the NFL, averaging 131.9 yards per game on the ground.
Through four games of the 2012 season utilizing the zone-blocking scheme, the Raiders are 32nd in the 32-team NFL — last — in averaging 60.8 rushing yards per game.
Still think the switch should have been seamless, and that the ZBS is similar to what the Raiders ran last year?
“It’s very different in the run game,” center Stefen Wisniewski told CSNCalifornia.com following the Raiders’ final pre-bye week practice on Wednesday. “Yeah, it really is.”
How, exactly?
Wisniewski’s eyes rolled and he smiled.
“Well, I mean, I’d get technical on you,” he said with a laugh. “Yeah, it’s, I mean, the footwork, the aiming points, just everything is. The whole goal’s different — you’re trying to get people to run sideways and make a cut, instead of trying to move people, drive them off the ball. So, the whole broad scheme is different and then all the little details are different, with all the footwork and everything and the combinations.
“But we’re getting more comfortable at them and the more reps we get, we’re just going to keep getting better and the more reps the (running) backs get, they’re going to keep getting better because it’s different for them, too. The reads are all very different.”
Keep in mind, the Raiders’ offensive line is still rounding into form, what with Wisniewski making the transition from left guard to center after missing all on-field work this offseason recovering from shoulder surgery before a calf injury sidelined him in the exhibition season. And Willie Smith is replacing the injured Khalif Barnes at right tackle.
Plus, it’s not like Oakland can practice the cut-blocking in practice against teammates.
“It’s definitely close and we really feel we’re continuing to get better at it,” Wisniewski said. “You know, it’s not an easy thing to pick up right away. It takes time, it takes practice and it takes game practice, too. It’s a different look than practice (when) you can’t really cut guys. It’s a whole different deal.
“It’s a things that’s going to take time and we’re definitely moving in the right direction and we’re definitely close to where we want to be.”
And therein lies the frustration.
“It’s tough,” Wisniewski said, “and we certainly want to be seeing results right now but coaches have been good and encouraging, encouraging us to be patient, keep working, keep getting better and just trust that it’s going to work and we believe it is going to work.”

…………………..
Your being a little kind.
But on the other hand, the Raiders may win because:
*They always lose early east coast games
*They always lose the game coming out of the bye week
*They lose to coaches smarter than them
*They lose to better teams
*Their D is easy to game plan on
*Running game is 1 dimensional
*knapp is the OC
So with all, and then some, of the odds AGAINST the Raiders, they may pull it off.
It’s either gonna be like 58-3 lopsided loss or a heart attack type game, Raiders win in OT 27-24.
October 8th, 2012 at 1:36 pm
is there a name for the disease when you have an ultra tiny shwanzo. maybe they can name it beechy dawg syndrome
October 8th, 2012 at 1:36 pm
The matchups…
The Falcon offense:
6th in points scored
7th in passing
21st in rushing
vs.
The Raider defense:
30th in points allowed
24th vs. the run
28th vs. the pass
The Falcon defense:
8th in points allowed
27th vs. the run
7th vs. the pass
vs.
The Raider offense:
29th in points scored
12th in passing
32nd in rushing
What those numbers say to me is this: there’s probably not much of a chance the defense can stop Atlanta’s high powered attack. If the Raiders are going to win this, they have got to play the ball control game and eat up clock and keep that offense on the sidelines. Atlanta can clearly be run on, now’s the time the run game needs to get out of its funk.
Sustain drives, convert on 3rd down, maybe get a big defensive stop/turnover at the end ala the Steeler game and there’s a chance.
But I won’t be holding my breath.

The ZBS sucks because if a o-line guy or two goes down, its not that easy to replace them with someone else unless that player has had just as many reps. Only a lack of brilliance coach would try and change what we had last year and try to start over with something new. I can clearly see this team wants to go vanilla.

October 8th, 2012 at 1:42 pm
If the game gets out of hand, I’m hoping the Falcons score 60 on us. I also have Julio Jones and Michael Turner on my fantasy team.
October 8th, 2012 at 1:43 pm
For some reason that I cannot explain, They’ve really taken it to some good teams in the past. Remember when Houston came to town off a 5 game winning streak and were in the hunt for playoffs….We were like 2-12 I think, and we pummelled the Sh*t outta them?
There’s several examples…
I am in NO way thinking or even HOPING for win on Sunday. Not even close….
But I wouldn’t be surprised in the LEAST bit if the Raiders won. I wouldn’t even be all that excited. I’d be like…”Yeah, that’s how they do.” Then they’d go and SH*T the bed against Jacksonville and lose like 38-12. Scoring a field goal in each quarter and making Gabbert look like Drew Brees.
That’s our Bi-Polar A$$ Backwards team for ya.

I’m gonna have an open mind about this instead of saying “we should go to LA” or “LA doesn’t want the Raiders”.
Sounds like it’s a case of who u talk to.
The LA Times did a poll in the offseason asking if LA would welcome the Raiders back. The results (as i recall) were about 55 % to 45 % in favor of Raiders being welcome. Not overwhelming by any means, but i think it’s in error to give the blanket statement “LA doesn’t want the Raiders”.

And here’s some more bad news for you. The depth on this team is brutal which means even more bad news for the immediate future. There are only so many draft picks and free agents and when youdo get them it takes them time to build chemistry. Reggie could have pieced together an 8-8, 9-7 team this year but that’s what this franchise has been doing for the last 25 years. Patching holes with duct tape. Hanging on to overpriced talent at the sacrifice of a solid foundation.
—
Anthony Robbins would call this negative thinking. But seriously, u brought up “chemistry” and I will bring up Carolina. The expansion Panthers were able to build fairly quickly with alot of draft picks and a few free agents. They were not ‘flooded’ with high level fa’s (as one poster errantly noted) but they did get a few mid-level, decent guys to help build.
If an expansion team can build enuff “chemistry” to be a game away from the SB in their 3RD YEAR of existence, there is no reason “chemistry” cannont be developed even quicker with a team with a number of players who are already working together.
“Chemistry” as yet another reason to be “patient” is overrated and frankly as evidenced by Carolina an invalid excuse for not winning.

The rebuilding process is really very simple and it’s the same formula used by perennial contenders like GB…who have very good since 1994. GB during that time (94-present) have rebuilt their roster MANY times over. They had a year i recall where they went 8-8 with Ray Rhodes. They fired him and proceeded to g 9-7, THEN 12-4 the very next season. Did they “blow it up”?
They had another year where they went 4-12 in 2005 and what happened the next yr.? 8-8, THEN 13-3 the next. In 2008 GB goes 6-10, the next yr.? 11-5.
GOOD PERSONNEL in the front office gets things done.
The difference in GB is the fans, media, players etc, EXPECT a winner, and the “powers that be” deliver. They never tell their fans to be “patient” for a few yrs.
I reference GB in this instance cuz Reggie came from there. I don’t know how much he had to do with everything but he never experienced anything more than ONE losing season in a row, and they NEVER blew anything up.

Those guys could walk out the door mid season in any other franchise and nobody would even know. Hubert almost didn’t even get hired anywhere else. And as I stated earlier, if you or any of you think Reggie was gonna turn this thing around or even build off of last years success with last years roster, 7 million dollars, and the last pick of the 3rd round then you need to start smokin somethin.

So what do you guys think of the rumor that Greg Knapp was Reggie’s choice and that DA wanted Neal Brown (Texas Tech)?

Matt Ryan’s first game against Raiders in 2008:
Atlanta 24
Raiders 0
That was his rookie year. He was throwing against Nnamdi and Routt.

Beeech Dawg,
Gawd, you are such a lying strumpet. You wouldn’t know a luxury box from an outhouse. Besides that, the proposed new stadium is NOT even selling luxury boxes yet.
You need to go back to premium pay at the “In and Out” and get a snoot full of hot mayonnaise.
That’s what you like best, right ?

The other part of that rumor is that 3 of the defensive starters and 2 of the offensive starters don’t buy into what DA is selling.

i’m sensing that some people think there was enough talent here to make a playoff run (if certain people were re-signed)
the reality is it was a soft 8-8, and we were much worse then we thought, with over-paid players and a failed draft picks resulting from coaching turnover and mulitple perspectives mostly misjudging talent, here. fortunately, 2010 class of Jacoby Ford, J.Veldheer and 2011’s Denarious Moore and Stefan Wisniewski yielded SOME talent. it will take a great draft and decent FA to get a competitive team, and the team growing with this coaching staff. – but as you see with Chan Gailey (there are coordinators that are coordinators, and coordinators that are HEAD COACHES).

The next stage is the anonymous rumors talking that they aren’t buying, then the team not buying in because they aren’t executing …. the coach responding.

i went to one game when they beat the Falcons 50-19 at the Coliseum….that year the Raiders lost 24-0, even the Falcon announcers were like “Lord Have Mercy” at the end of the broadcast (in a good ol southern church way)
when the broadcasters show pity, you know its a mess…and that was back in 2008

complete crap, because Allen’s a texas guy and got Pollack from the Texans and Knapp came along with them – i believe Reggie McKenzie had NO input or advice in any way for Allen

Raiders will be thoroughly thrashed by the Falcons. It won’t even be close and will be worse than Raiders’ recent Raiders v Broncos.

Why is anyone surprised that Ryan torched Nnamdi, the greatest “no shutdown, shutdown corner in the NFL”.
I saw Nnamdi play recented and he was torched 5 times and so far out of it he looked like he was drunk.
Guy aint worth 2 dead flies.
