Gonzalez won’t have Raiders to kick around after Sunday

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, October 10th, 2012 at 3:20 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Tight end Tony Gonzalez has been a thorn in the Raiders side for most of his 16 NFL seasons, especially as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.
If all goes according to plan, the Raiders will face Gonzalez for the final time Sunday, when the Raiders play the Atlanta Falcons on the road. Well, that is unless the Raiders and Falcons advance to the Super Bowl.
Gonzalez says he intends to retire after this season, even though he leads the NFL in receptions through five games.
“I’m still sticking to it,” Gonzalez said in a conference call with Bay Area medai. “I’m having some fun but I haven’t changed my mind at all. I’m still at 95 percent. I’m never ever going to say 100 percent. I’m just enjoying it one week at a time. I’m lucky enough to stick around this long. To end it like this, playing with some great players, great quarterback, great receivers outside, it’s a lot of fun.”
Falcons coach Mike Smith said he’s holding out hope that Gonzalez changes his mind at some point.
“I’m hoping for that 5 percent,” Smith said. “That’s all you can do. Tony’s without a doubt in my mind the greatest tight end to ever play the game, and he’s been a great addition to our football team and our organization.”
In 23 games vs. the Raiders, Gonzalez has 121 receptions for 1,473 yards and eight touchdowns. He missed one game with an injury. Gonzalez’ team won 16 of the 24 games against the Raiders.
Through the years, Gonzalez created a slew of memorable moments and milestones against the Raiders.
His first victory came against the Raiders on that infamous Monday night game in 1997, when Andre Rison caught a game-deciding touchdown pass from Elvis Grbac with 3 seconds left.
His longest touchdown reception came against the Raiders — 73 yards. The Raiders knocked the Chiefs out of the playoffs race in the regular-season finale in 1999 by overcoming a 17-0 deficit at Arrowhead Stadium.
Gonzalez also is quite fond of the memories from playing so many games at the Oakland Coliseum against a Raiders team he grew up rooting for in Los Angeles.
“I tell people that’s one of my favorite places to play, going out there, going into that chaos out there with all those fans and all that nuttiness,” Gonzalez said. “So, I kind of miss that.”
The Raiders certainly won’t miss searching for ways to defend Gonzalez, who is a sure-fire Pro Football Hall of Famer five years after he retires.
Former 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice is the only other player in league history with more receptions than Gonzalez. That won’t ever change, Gonzalez said.
“Jerry can have that record,” Gonzalez said. “I see Jerry every offseason and if that subject comes up, I’m always telling him, ‘Man, you’re record is safe because I’m definitely breaking that.’ Even if there’s a slight chance I did come back next year, that would definitely be my last year, so there’s no way. That record is safe with Jerry. That and the Dancing With The Stars, I ain’t doing that, either.”

– Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie talks about how much he loves his draft picks. Hence, he said he is hesitant to part with his picks.
The Falcons took a different approach when it came to selecting wide receiver Julio Jones. They traded their own first-round pick (No. 27 overall), a second-rounder (59) and a fourth-rounder (124) in the 2011 NFL draft, in addition to their 2012 first-rounder and a fourth-rounder, to move up 21 spots and get Jones.
“Everybody was on board and, obviously, it’s something that worked out very well for us,” Smith said. “You’re going to have to make those kinds of decisions if you’re going to bring in a talented guy on to your roster.”
Jones caught 26 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns in the Falcons first five games. He recorded 54 receptions for 959 yards and eight touchdowns in 13 games his rookie season.
The way Smith and general manager Thomas Dimitroff work hand-in-hand is something Allen admires.
“They, obviously, work together very well,” Allen said. “They got the right formula for winning football games. They understand how to win football games and they understand their personnel and what they’re looking for. So, yeah, in that mode, that’s a team that we, in some respects, try to emulate.”

– Kicker Sebastian Janikowski (groin) and defensive tackles Tommy Kelly (foot) and Richard Seymour (knee) were limited in practice today. All three are expected to play against the Falcons.
Allen said wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (concussion) is looking good in practice and that Allen expects Heyward-Bey to play Sunday.
Quarterback Carson Palmer said Heyward-Bey isn’t showing any lingering effects from the helmet-to-helmet hit he received Sept. 23.
“Like he hasn’t missed a week,” Palmer said. “He caught the ball really well today. He looked extremely fast like he always does. There wasn’t one instance in practice or in meetings where he seemed a little foggy at all. That’s always the issue. It takes you a little while to kind of come out of a daze, but he’s out and he’s ready to play.”

– If the Raiders are going to emerge from their funk running the ball, now would seem to be the time, given the Falcons allow an average of 5.4 yards per carry this season.
Allen said he has seen progress from the running game the past week and a half, even though he isn’t about to make any radical changes.
“Well, you can’t throw everything out and just start over in the middle of the year,” Allen said. “So, yeah, there’s been a few tweaks, a few emphasis points, but nothing like a drastic change, other than we got to execute better. … We’ll see what it looks like when we go out and play on Sunday.”
Palmer said he realizes that people not associated with the Raiders aren’t pleased with the run game, but he said the team’s best bet is to run the ball even more because it puts the ball in the hands of their “best player.”
McFadden agrees that the run game is about to bust out any game now.
“You can see it,” McFadden said. “We see it out there. Guys keep grinding, like I say. It’s one of those things that you have to keep pushing and eventually it’s going to start hitting and it’s something we feel like we’ve been doing lately.”

– The Raiders are in the midst of a nine-game losing streak in terms of games played immediately after a bye week.
Palmer said he expects the Raiders to come out firing Sunday.
“It shouldn’t be hard there,” Palmer said. “There’s only two undefeated teams left. Their crowd is going to be really loud and intense, so it shouldn’t take us long to wake up.
“You’ve got a little bit of rust coming off of a bye but hopefully we shake that off fast. I expect us to. As big of a game as we’re going into and as difficult a situation, the hostile environment we’re going into, I expect we’ll bounce back and be ready to play.”

– Defensive end Andre Carter practiced in pads today for the first time since last year, when he was with the New England Patriots.
“It was good,” Carter said. “I felt like a new kid in school. It’s all great. I felt like I haven’t lost a step, getting accustomed to hitting. It’s definitely going to come down to the game as far as tackling, because you can’t really implement it at practice. You just go.
“I don’t have the preseason, I don’t have the training camp. You got to know what you’re going to do. You got to know your angles and just go ahead and go.”
Carter likely will get his first chance to go in a game Sunday. He hasn’t appeared in a game since he was signed by the Raiders two weeks ago.

Seriously the falcons have Matty to WR’s and Turner seems to be able to run now and then. Thats about it. Their D is not

We can shut down the run and hope we get pressure with our 4 man rush. Then just play takeaway. Lee seems to be real good at it.

CP will play well especially if DMAC gets going and he is overdue. I expect a big week from him.

Worshiper, you have to get over it. DMAC will never run 200 yds. The only time he came close to that was last season, 150yds Broncos, 172 yds.Jets, two of the worst teams with the worst defenses in the the NFL at the time. After that DMAC did squat then was out for the season.

Get it through your head: DMAC isn’t an elite back and never will. If he had 150 against the Steelers and 172 against the Broncos this season, that would be something else.

IMO, he’s a broken down has been who has less yards than Michael Bush in 4 and a quarter seasons.

    MVP Superbowl win 1983

    DMAC

    First 4 seasons:

    Rushing 2627 yds 16 TD
    Receiving 1191 yds 4 TD

    DMAC Worshipers,

Marcus Allen was an elite and great back. Who, with a straight face can claim that DMAC is of the same caliber, an elite back, the best back in the NFL now, etc.??

    Fiddlesticks.

That’s like saying Nnamdi is a “shut down corner” one of the best in the NFL. A measily 13 INT’s in almost 10 seasons, constantly torched and burned with the Eagles where he was to have immediate and overwhelming success. He looks now just like Stanford Routt.

Nnamdi = the best “NO SHUT DOWN, shut down corner” in the NFL

The point of it is, the Raiders have no talent in either their players or staff.

I like Atlanta, I like what their franchise is doing but this is a game where we can come out and play to our potential, we are a better match for them than they have seen thus far.

It all depends if Knapp can put away his ego to let CP go no-huddle like vs Pitts, IMO.

If he doesn’t, it will be another blow out. 30 to 40 point loss. Knapp is honestly that clueless calling plays. Its not the ZBS that is the problem… its Knapps play calling… too many rushing plays into 8 in the box, fer instance. There is not a RB in the NFL these days that will fare well against 8 in the box.

Come Sunday,we will need Rocky to play MLB and Apollo Creed at CB.

  135. Just Fire Baby Says:

The Falcons took a different approach when it came to selecting wide receiver Julio Jones. They traded their own first-round pick (No. 27 overall), a second-rounder (59) and a fourth-rounder (124) in the 2011 NFL draft, in addition to their 2012 first-rounder and a fourth-rounder, to move up 21 spots and get Jones.

    *****************************

That really flies in the face of all those who keep telling me that all the great teams build through their O-line.

Falcons have a top 5 pick at QB, another WR that was a 1st round pick, and mortgaged their future drafts on THEIR #2 WR, meanwile they have undrafted FA’s and mid round picks all over the line.

  136. DJ Johnny Says:

Maybe they’ll play Ride of the Valkyries right before the game like on Apocolypse Now.

Hey. If it works? Do it.

Yeah. It’s not like you can change your scheme to fit your talent in middle of the season…(even tho it’s the first quarter of the season) and tailor it to fit your running QB and go on a 6 game winning streak that saves your season. Even tho you saw it done first hand on the team you coached on.

  145. Abner Goldblatt Says:

Shalom mi amigos. My name is Abner Goldblatt. I am from Jerusalem.

I have watched the Raiders for many yrs. Al Davis is a hero to us here. We miss him loco mucho.

But there is some sentiment in the organization that the team would be better without 55 i heard that early on. That was good to hear but there is part of me that feels pretty sorry for him.

  148. AmysInCharge Says:

Lol Raider Guy,…you heard that huh?…you must be an insider,…lmao.

  149. Raider On High Says:

Does our current GM facilitate the needs of our current HC or is our current HC just a yes man to our current GM? Do they work in tandem? WTF is goin on with this crap ZBS scheme. We are 1-4 and no signs of improvement when your QB can not use the no huddle (Denver) cuz it upstages (Pittsburgh) the current OC.

  150. DJ Johnny Says:

Guy, If you feel that way then you must be under the impression that he is actually going full out 100%. Otherwise there would be very little sympathy from where I sit.

It does not appear to me that he is giving that kind of effort.

  151. DJ Johnny Says:

McClain is getting “punked” and laughed at on NFLN. He seems below average at best and a worthless slug at worst.

He is far from the ‘leader’ on defense we thought or hoped he would be.

IMO they are better off just benching him and moving Burris to MLB and Goethel over to Burris’s spot.

Would we be any worse on D under that scenario?

Our current HC probably doesn’t have what it takes to bench a player for various reasons that would send a message to the rest of the team.

Gutsy trade by ATL and hard to second guess, since JJ is playing well. But I felt then, and still feel now, they gave up too much to get him.

  154. Abner Smith Says:

Good evening Raider fans. My name is Abner Smith and I’m a real Raider fan. I watch all the games on tv when I’m not working at my accounting office. I’m a CPA and I mostly do corporate tax filings. I work with some very important people.

But when I get off work I like to hang out at the bar at a big name motel and buy drinks for the bizzies. Next thing you know, we start gettin low and nasty right on the floor. Got locked in the old dog and pony bareback the bartender had to call the fire department to break us up, if you catch my drift. Holla.

  184. MaskaRaider Says:

Atlanta has a lot of holes on offense and defense. Their 5-0 record is inflated. If Allen has studied them and is smart, he will no doubt have a game plan that can beat them. The real question is weather knapp is smart enough to game plan their leaky defense. Only chance we get is for Palmer to no huddle 75% of the plays.

The thing is the black hole was not a “figment of Al’s imagination”. He never claimed the black hole was the toughest place to play. The media claimed that, cuz it seemed like it should be a tough place to play.

It’s like they wanna fault Al for having the gall to play home games.

Voting for Mitt Romney is like selling your soul to the devil. All he talks about is war and defending this country… From who? We’re the last military super power n the world. We have all types of weapons of mass destrucion. NUCLEAR, biologica, chemical and so forth… the world knows this, nobody wants it with us, nothing happens to this country unless we allow it because with our intelligence units we know everything. They knew about 911 and allowed it so they cud invade Afghanistan and strip it of its resources and reap the financial benefits of the war. Went to iraq and said sadaam had weapons of mass destruction a(nd was connected to 911only to strip it of its resources and build bases for future tactical reasons. Everytime we were lied to by he bush administration and it just so happens Romney is being advised by those connected to and in bushes camp. These guys are pushing an agenda that only benefits themselves and not the people. He already said he doesn’t care about the 47% or the little guy so that lets you know where he stands. He lies about so much yu can tell he’s not sincere and will say anything to get in office. He’s the guy you warn your daughter about, they guy who will come along whisper all these sweet nothings telling her everything he thinks she wants to hear to earn her trust and then once he gets what he wants he leaves her there feeling hurt and betrAyed. *****************************

I don’t blame him for EVERYTHING, just the state of the franchise.

We are a bottom of the barrel NFL franchise, there is no debating that.

And reason #1 is not because of the on-field product, but because of the stadium we play in and the lack of revenues it generates.

  262. Just Fire Baby Says:

49ers are going to build a nice new stadium, probably host a Super Bowl in the coming years, and further distance the East Bay as the red-headed step child.

We need to close that gap ASAP, and I hope Mark is up to the task. It won’t be easy.

  268. Just Fire Baby Says:

MONEYBALL! I’m not much of a baseball fan, but I would like to see A’s win it all. I don’t care about the dirt field anymore since the Raiders suck anyways. Their field might as well suck too.

    Ballsy move by Joe Garadi

That is the kind of coaching that many teams lack. Good move.

  272. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Moneyball is working.

Used to be about drawing walks and OBP, now the undervalued league-wide asset is speed and defense.

A’s put pressure on the other defense by running the bases well, and they can pick it.

Moss saved a few runs yesterday, cleaning up bad throws at first. That doesn’t happen with Scott Hatterburg at 1st.

  273. Just Fire Baby Says:

Although, going up against Verlander today is a majorly tough task.

I put Verlander in my top 20 most dominating athletes in any sport.

He doesn’t even have to be at his best to be great. He can be at 90%, and throw a 4 hit, 1 run game.

At 100%, he is a no-hitter waiting to happen.

  274. jesusraiderjim Says:

Lowest payroll in the league and emulating a deadguy (BERNIE) for a dance move, God I miss the bay area.

  275. hwnrdr Says:

Agreed JFB! This year’s version of Moneyball is a lot better than 2002! If we win it tonight, that will put a cap on being better. That throw from Donaldson on his knee to catch the runner at first was a helluva play!

  276. jesusraiderjim Says:

The A’s have a little bit of magic left anything can happen as they seem to prove over and over

  277. Albert Bigelow Paine Says:

A’s are a good omen for Reggie’s version of Money Ball.

  278. Just Fire Baby Says:

Moss picking Drew’s wild throw on that much needed double-play in one of the middle innings, saved a run, and maybe a big inning.

  279. Just Fire Baby Says:

A’s are a good omen for Reggie’s version of Money Ball.

    **************************

The theories behind Moneyball, don’t translate to a salary-cap league.

You don’t have a farm system in football, to trade bigger contracts for younger, cheaper guys, or to bring up talented underpaid guys. Others teams don’t have twice the payroll as you do, etc.

  280. KoolKell Says:

    Pafiluca is a socialist?

  281. Just Fire Baby Says:

What The Reggie did this year, was take steps and cuts to be back into a strong financial position in the years ahead, instead of trying to spin the tires and be teetering on salary cap hell to sign guys like Kam Wimbley.

Tough to stomach maybe this year, but he isn’t going to hitch his first and maybe only GM job, to picking up practice squad guys.

He will be throwing money around next offseason, rest assured.

  282. KoolKell Says:

    Pagiliguca?

  283. Just Fire Baby Says:

Pafiluca? Who the F is that?

Stephen Pagliuca is a big-wig at Bain, who owns part of the Celtics, and ran for Ted Kennedy’s vacant spot on the Dem ticket.

And Joshua Berkenstein, CEO of Bain, is the Sheldon Adelson for Dem’s. Gives money to EVERY Democratic mayor, Senate and Congress race across the country, and millions upon millions to Al Gore’s super-PAC.

That’s why you NEVER hear BO attack Bain. Those are HIS guys, not Mitt’s.

  298. Just Fire Baby Says:

I think it will be a competitive game, not predicting a victory just yet, but a close fought game will be a great sign.

Since Matt Ryan came in the league, NO QB IN THE NFL, has more 4th quarter come from behind regular season wins.

I can see him breaking our back with a last second FG drive.

  299. guest123 Says:

    good morning Hawaiian Raider.

It’s been a long quarter season already. We have some work to do, but it’s a matter of execution on the field. I don’t think we are as bad as many think we are. It’s just that after we fall behind by 2 scores, games get out of hand and there is a lack of leadership to keep the poise. That is what concerns me the most.

There is an old saying I remember and I’m paraphrasing here. You don’t find out the character of a man by his victories but by his defeats. Something like that. And it’s true. We need to fight back and play hard and execute plays even when the score is lopsided. We are sometimes our own worst enemy in that regard. But I think we can bounce back from this disappointing start.

  328. raiderfankirk Says:

Anyone watch Huston play last week? They pass to set up the run. They come throwing and catch the D playing pass and run from passing formation. We’re run, run, pass three and out. Nothing like their offensive strategy.
The defense was horrible against Payton last week. However how do you have your D go out …set and let Manning read it and pick you apart. The D should have been moving around and audibling when he did. Like the Broncos D was doing to us.
Coaching is to blame for running game and defensive performance. How is anyone going to run with the play calls. We are getting? Foster or Marcus Allen would be stuffed.
We can only hope Palmer changes the shizty play calls like he did against Pittsburgh. Where is Marshall? Would love to have his blitzing D now.

  332. Just Fire Baby Says:

I’ve never seen such a good team like the Tigers be so bad defensively.

It’s not just the errors that they make, it is the double-plays they don’t turn, the fly balls that drop in the outfield, etc.

Even that last play, Avila (their catcher) is among the best at sealing the plate, even a sissified on- target throw at least forces a play.

But dude overruns it and doesn’t even get a throw off. Amazing.

I’m all for givng Al criticism where it is merited, but it seems people wanna blame him for EVERYTHING wrong in the world.

    *****************************

I don’t blame him for EVERYTHING, just the state of the franchise.

We are a bottom of the barrel NFL franchise, there is no debating that.

And reason #1 is not because of the on-field product, but because of the stadium we play in and the lack of revenues it generates.

    I agree 100%.

Mark is doing everything possible to get that done but cannot do it alone…no nfl teams do. Al tried to get one as well.

If the “powers that be” don’t wanna help make that happen in Oakland Mark will look elsewhere as he’s already said as much.

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

  336. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Johnny,

You should look at what the Cards did for their stadium.

They created some iffy, quasi-municipality to float debt at a tax-free municipal bond rate (lower %) but is paying it back with revenues tied to a quasi-private corporation. Don’t know all the logistics, and the water is muddy, but it basically coupled private money, with public financing, and they have a place that houses an event every weekend. HS state finals, tractor pulls, BCS bowls games, Cards game, hockey games.

It was a big coup, but it worked beautifully.

  337. Just Fire Baby Says:

Here is the sad state of where the Raiders play.

My wife has been to two football stadiums in her life. Where the Cards play, when we went to the Raiders game 2 years ago, and where the UNM Lobo’s play.

We are going to the Raiders-Donks game Dec 6th this year, and when she asked me about the stadium, I had to tell her it is much closer to Lobo Stadium than where the Cardinals play.

In fact, I think the sound system and big screen are better where a perennial 2-10 college football team plays.

Sad, sad state of affairs that is.

  338. Just Fire Baby Says:

Was just reading Mark Purdy’s write-up.

He says: “On Tuesday, the raucous atmosphere continued into the later innings with the silly “Bernie Lean” dance — and then into the bottom of the ninth, when A’s reliever Grant Balfour entered the game”.

Ummmm, doesn’t he know that the A’s bat in the bottom of the ninth? Don’t they have editors?

    *Sigh*

  339. Just Fire Baby Says:

And he also screwed up the outfield “Tribe” cheering section call it LF instead of RF.

I will never read a word from him again.

Two big mistakes on your column in the biggest A’s baseball game in 10 years.

    Unacceptable!!!!

Raiders running game was just the topic on 670 AM in Chicago (the sports station). They did this quiz of who had the least rushing attempts in the league and everyone was trying to guess who it was. The anncr. finally told them it is Oakland….at 17 attempts per game.

This is close to verbatim as I can remember how it went after they said Raiders were #1 in the dubious category.

“What? Oakland? With Darren McFadden”? “You gotta be kidding me?”

“How does a team with Darren McFadden only run the ball 17 times a game? That’s ridiculous. What the hell are they doing out there?”

“Oakland has been pretty decent the last couple of yr’s”

(another anncr. interrupts): “They fired the coach remember?”

-”Yeah..Hue Jackson? “Yeah”. “Well why in the hell would you not give the ball to McFadden more than that? C’mon…What are they doin’ out there?”

-”Oakland appeared to be one of the teams you had to look out for”…

-”Well, what are they 1-4…omethin like that?”

    -”Uhhh…1-3 I believe…yes.”

-”That game against Denver was just a disaster…seems like they were making progress..

-”Yeah…well 17 carries for McFadden will tend to stunt your growth a little bit”.

    -”(laugh) yeah, well…

-”Who’s the coach out there now?”

    -”Ummm… Dennis Allen”

    -”The Denver d coordinator right?”

    -”That’s right”.

-”Well, he needs to get his head out of his…you know what if he’s not utilizing Darren McFadden…geeez”.

My Reds blew an opportunity to end it in game 3. Squandered excellent pitching performance, and Phillips cost them an important, early run being a lil over aggressive running the bases.

I agree with Eck on this pregame show. I thought Dusty stuck with Leake a lil too long yesterday. Cincy has one of the best and deepest bullpens in baseball. He shoulda utilized it.

Lil Timmy has been huge for SF. He’s rebounded from his disappointing reg season. Even in game two loss, I thought he really gave SF a spark. I was relieved when Bochy pulled him.

You simply dont get what makes us so special. We are the city that no one loves accept those that live here. every one wants to take from oakland but no one wants to acknowledge okaland for its abundant resources and talent. Oakland is the under dog, always in the shadow of the glitzy san francisco polish. We are beans and rice, to sf and l.a.’s steak and lobster. We are known throughout california and the country as a hard core city, out gunned, and locked in perpetual mortal struggle.

This is what makes the bond between the fans authentic oakland fans bond with our local teams so unique, as they are the embodiment of the struggle in a certain way. take the oakland a’s for example. this is a team that was left for dead and told it couldnt compete. oakland doesnt have the big name star, or guys named after animals that sell merchandise. They are just blue collar guys that are tough and gritty, just like the local population that surrounds the home field.

As the impostors and out of towners cling to their tenuous, arbitrary allegiance to our teams, we will be basking in true green and gold glory. Our beloved city for a brief time will transform into a paradise of peace and brotherhood as we celebrate our victory against the odds…….

  351. MikieG Says:

As poorly as our run game has been performing…The Raiders win/loss record falls squarely on the shoulders of the defense.
The Raiders have to be perfect in order to score a touchdown because they never get the ball back. In order to grind a team down and get your running game really rolling, the OTHER TEAMS offense needs to be off the field. DMC and crew feel like they have to hit a homerun every freakin series because once they punt, they never see the ball again–perfect example is the Denver game in which they didn’t even punt 1 freakin time! Really, not 1 forced 3 and out? How do you expect a run game to wear down an opposing defensive line? Running backs get better as the game goes on because if they know they don’t make a first down this series, they will get the ball back in 5 minutes and can BLAST an opposing LB’er or Saftety, or Corner instead of trying to run around em in order to get in the guys head by saying–it’s going to hurt you EVERY time you try to tackle me…
Our Defense doesn’t afford our offense this type of opportunity, and instead THEY are the ones getting worked over. The offense can’t score on every possession folks, and if the defense wants got get off the field, its UP TO THEM TO GET OFF THE DAMN FIELD–DMAC ain’t a jogging MLB, or a CB playing 36 feet off his man…or a D-End not getting so much as a purse string on the QB…

  352. MikieG Says:

Anyway, even if the Jets were #1 in run defense when DMAC ran against them for 172 yds, it hardly matters.

My point was that Marcus Allen was an elite HOF runner, while DMAC is not. DMAC may be an excellent runner but hardly elite.

Further, DMAC is not the point either: the point is the Raiders are sorely lacking in talent.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I watched the Eagles play two weeks ago, I’ve forgotten against whom. Nnamdi was terrible. He got torched on 6 passes, didn’t make a single play, was out of place and left gasping for air on several other passes thrown into the zone.

He looked just like Stanford Routt last season.

AD had some great insight in getting rid of him, and the Eagles fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

Then again, what can one expect from Nnamdi, who had a measily 13 INT’s in 10 seasons.

    Time for him to retire.

The Raiders did not get rid of their zone-blocking scheme during the bye week.
Coach Dennis Allen did concede that the offense made a few tweaks to the running game, but said “you can’t throw everything out and just start over in the middle of the year.” The coaches and Carson Palmer insist that they will remain committed to running the ball with Darren McFadden, who is averaging 3.52 YPC. “Darren is doing a great job with the reads,” running backs coach Kelly Skipper said. “We just need to keep grinding. And all of a sudden, it will start popping. Big runs everywhere.”

  427. SilverNBlackPA Says:

Here’s an excerpt from a long article about the Seahawks struggle to adapt to Cable’s ZBS. (Worth noting that they’ve finally gelled with it.) The “Payne” referred to is former NFL nose tackle Seth Payne:

    ============

“The big element that [the Denver Broncos that won multiple Super Bowls in the 90's] had was the offensive line coach that was sort of the revolutionary behind this modern zone running offense [in Alex Gibbs],” started Payne. “And, I’m a huge proponent of that offense — I don’t know why more teams don’t do it — and for your listeners, when you run a real zone offense, you’re talking about the offensive linemen stepping laterally at the snap, and running toward the sidelines, creating seams horizontally instead of trying to blow guys off the ball. Every offensive line uses some elements of zone-blocking, but teams like the Redskins and Texans do it predominantly. They have a very simple running game that is predicated on running toward the sideline.”

Payne went on, “What that does for you is it stretches the field for you horizontally; in essence, you’re almost moving the hashmarks as you do that. And, you’re getting the secondary, the linebackers — not only to commit to the run, but to commit to the run toward the sideline. So, when you do pass, you’ve really created a lot of nice open lanes.”

So, if this offense works so well, why don’t more teams use it? I’ve often wondered this myself, and Payne offered his theory.

“The downside is that it takes a lot of teamwork,” he said. “I’ve always equated it to running a full-court press, in basketball. You have to have guys that are really tough-nosed, grinder type guys that can work together and have really good endurance. You end up with smaller offensive linemen, you get scrappy guys — I hate that word, but it’s true — you get scrappy guys, receivers that can block downfield, and it’s very effective.”

The Seahawks don’t subscribe to the ‘undersized’ linemen tenet of this system quite as much as some teams have in the past – they started to when Alex Gibbs coached for Seattle shortly to start the 2010 season, but moved away from it in 2011 with the hiring of Gibbs’ protege, Tom Cable. But, under Cable, they still certainly value mobility in their personnel. “You need to have power, [and size],” Tom Cable recently said, “but you’ve got to have speed and quickness. It’s not a fat-guy system, it’s a big-guy system that can move and create violence.”

The scrappy type of player Payne describes certainly holds true for the Cable ZBS though, and is evident in some of the Seahawks moves over the last few seasons — Breno Giacomini, James Carpenter, J.R. Sweezy, Edawn Coughman, Rishaw Johnson, and Lemuel Jeanpierre, to name a few, all have ‘that nasty’ that you hear coaches talk about. Interestingly enough though, Payne went on to talk about how the ZBS affects, is affected by, and is even predicated upon the play of a few other key positions.

Said Payne, “I think it’s true that you don’t have to have a truly, Peyton Manning-type precision quarterback to [run the system effectively]. If you’ve got a guy like Matt Schaub, who’s a very intelligent quarterback, I was watching some games earlier today and I had forgotten how well he does throwing into the teeth of the blitz. He has a good sense for when blitzes are coming, and where to get rid of the ball when they come.”

The ability to stare down the gun barrel, as you’ll hear John Schneider (quoting Jaws) say.
[The offense is predicated on] the line and the running backs,” Payne went on. “If you listen to some coaches that talk about coaching the system, all they talk about is — you almost have to look at the running back as an extension of the offensive line. That running back, more so than in a conventional scheme, really has to understand what those offensive linemen are doing, and it’s up to the running back, more so than in a conventional blocking offense, to really read, and understand where a center or guard are taking guys, because they’ll just wash them upfield if they’re beat.”

You may remember that sometime around Week 9 in 2011, the Seahawks essentially decided that despite the results, they were finally going to commit fully to the run. On first down, on second down, on third down – whether they were losing or not, installing that run-first identity was the most important thing. At that time, as it was explained by Cable after the season, Marshawn Lynch apparently accepted a fundamental change in his running style as proposed by Tom Cable: “We made a deal – you have to do it the way I tell you to do it, I ask you to do it,” Cable said. “And he’s done it. So a lot of credit, to me, goes to him because he was willing to kind of maybe push his ego or push own beliefs, to some extent, aside and then embrace something new.”

“Because,” Cable went on, “this is a system that asks backs to do things a certain way. Once you get in and through the line of scrimmage, then do your thing. You can do all the craziness you want then. But you’ve got to do it this way from A to B. And he bought in from A to B. And after that, what you do from C on is you.” Lynch began to improve on his runs from A to B – largely eliminating the dancing and fidgeting behind the line that had driven fans crazy early in the season and into last year. Then, predictably, has been a beast at point C, breaking tackles and consistently pushing the pile.
Payne noted too, predictably, that the quarterback has a lot to do with the success of a ZBS.

“So,” he said, “once you sell it, with that running game, the quarterback better be really good at making his fakes, the quarterback better be ready to deal with a defensive end in his face on a boot, but it’s much more of a team concept, It’s a real team concept.”

The Texans are clearly who the Raiders want to be but the Seahawks are a good rushing team after sticking with the ZBS for a season despite ugly results in 2011.

And when DMac can get going he’s better than Marshawn Lynch.

And when defenses have to respect McFadden, Carson Palmer throwing to DHB and Denarius Moore is much better than Russell Wilson throwing to Sidney Rice and…I don’t know..Doug Baldwin?

Point is if the Raiders can gel with the ZBS and become a good rushing team, they’ll blow by where the Seahawks are. And it can happen.

Guys bring up how SF turned things around in one yr. from 5-11 to 13-3 with Harbaugh and then they get shot down by guys saying “well the defense was already in place. You can’t equate the Raiders situation with SF’s”.

Well, one can rightly say the Raiders OFFENSE was pretty much in place and w/o McFadden last yr.

With that line of thinking someone could make the case that all the Raiders had to do is fix up one side of the ball and away we go…instead it gets blown up and re-constituted.

Is that akin to “blowing up” the niner defense? Harbaugh was smart enuff not to do that, instead focusing on what needed fixing.

I’m not holding my breath on the ZBS. I think it will “click” for a play here and there, and with McFadden’s talent, he’ll take a few to the house. But in between those long runs will be a long succession of 2 yards and a cloud of dust.

I’ll feel much better when there is enough evidence that the system doesn’t work and the coaching staff is compelled to scrap it for good. But not holding my breath.

  476. blackandsilverside Says:

    DJ Johnny,

I love the example of Seattle and the zbs cuz it shows the system does not necessarily make u a winner.

7-9 consecutive seasons doesn’t do it for me.

I know you’re very smart guy, DJ Johnny, so I have to ask if you’re deliberately ignoring/twisting my point? I never said I aspire to be Seattle

Maybe I misunderstood your purpose for referencing Cable and Seattle’s struggles and subsequent success in implementing the system. I took it that you were saying “hey look..Seattle took a while to gel with this and we will to”.

My bad if I misunderstood your point.

Thanks Blackside. There is debate, as u know, on whether our offense was really that good in the first place last yr.

I have maintained doing as well as we did last yr. on offense (w/o McFadden) and with a QB that was still getting his bearings and only utilizing half the playbook, that we were pretty good on that side and just needed a bit of “tweaking”.

Some feel that our offense needed much more fixing.

I don’t think that either the zone blocking scheme or the power blocking scheme is clearly better than the other, but the zbs takes time to jell, and since we were already a good power blocking team I saw no reason to fix what wasn’t broken, but now that we are already into it, I think it will work eventually, but it may not be this year. It would sure be a waist to have two quality linemen like Wiz and Veldheer, and not have them fit the zone blocking scheme. This team has as much offensive talent, or at least close to it, as any team in the NFL.

  488. Just Fire Baby Says:

Our offense needed an identity from last year.

One week we rush for 170 yards, the next week 50.

One week we score 34 points, the next week 13.

Not saying we gained an identity so far, at least not a good one lol, but you couldn’t count on anything offensively last year.

When we needed a first down to ice a game, we NEVER got it, because there was nothing we could hang our hat on.

We are trying to form an identity as a run-first, ZBS sytle, play-action offense. No great offense was created in 4 games.

Things will get better, a lot better in fact.

If his name was Stefan Walton, instead of Stefan Wisniewski, would we be as patient and as fond with him?

He lead the O-line in penalties last year, is doing so this year as well, and doesn’t seem that great in the run-blocking area.

    Good not great, IMO.

  494. raiderkoolaid Says:

One thing, last year or this year we have not been good at being able to run for one yard when we need it, either on the goal line or on third or fourth and short. That needs to be fixed.

    DJ,

I think the Raiders’ offense, even without DMAC was fairly solid last year, especially since Bush ran well after DMAC went down.

Also, Hue knew how to use Reece and others in unique ways while Knapp is clueless in that regard.

With tweaking we could have had a dynamic offense, especially since CP has gotten over the throwing of bone headed INT’s.

We could have introduced the ZBS slowly, as another scheme complimentary to power blocking and we would have been set on that side of the ball.

Reggie, DA, etc. would have had to worry about the defense only (for the most part) thus saving us seasons and seasons worth of grief.

Another screw up by McK. Should have kept Satele on the cheap and kept Wiz at LG and Wiz can also fill in as the backup to Satele at Center.
