Status quo for Raiders as Falcons game nears

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, October 10th, 2012 at 12:03 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen and his staff have had 10 days to evaluate the 53-man roster and take steps to make any necessary tweaks before Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.
As of now, McKenzie and Allen appear content to soldier on with the 53 players who were on the roster against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 30.
Allen said the Raiders didn’t work out any players last week, and we haven’t been able to confirm whether they did so Tuesdday, when the players had the day off.
Even if the Raiders did work out any players Tuesday, there aren’t any new faces on the field at practice today.

– Right offensive tackle Khalif Barnes (groin), cornerback Shawntae Spencer (foot) and tight end Richard Gordon (hamstring) aren’t practicing today.
Barnes and Spencer are week-to-week. Gordon is day-to-day. Willie Smith is working at Barnes’ spot, with Michael Huff taking reps at cornerback once again.
David Ausberry is getting plenty of action at practice, along with starter Brandon Myers.

– The Raiders play at 10 a.m. on Sunday. In recent years, Raiders coaches adjusted the practice schedule the week of such games to simulate the time of the upcoming game.
No such tactic with Allen. He used it for the regular-season opener, when he had his players practice at the Coliseum on a Saturday nigth at about the time of their Monday night game two days later.

It always seemed to me the fans at the OCO rile up opposing teams even more to beat us at home.

They get out on the field maybe a little nervous at first, then they realize that “hey, these guys aren’t really that good” and they proceed to open up a can of whoopazz.

We’d be alot better at home if we could back up the “Black Hole” with intimidating play ON THE FIELD.
    ====================================
Fans in other stadiums are easily as vocal as fans in the black hole. Eagle fans much more so. Seahawk fans are much louder.
Costumes is what gets the attention.
How many times do opposing teams have false starts because of the noise in Oak? hardly ever.

Seriously? McClain “gives us the best opportunity to win”?

McClain is a liability. His mere presence on the field is a detriment to the defense. They would probably do better with just playing the Bresnahan 3-3-4 defense instead…and just tell McClain..”don’t worry..just sit back down and we’ll see how it goes w/out you in there”.

Surely you didn’t see the falcons struggle against carolina and redksins … ??? I get where your coming from but I am not so sure this is a blow-out. We can’t win on road in eastern time zone but eventualy we will have to … I watched panther vs falcons game … They have no d-line and their only pass rusher “charles johnson” had 4.5 sacks on Ryan … plus they cant stop the run.

First words to come out of D.A’s mouth in the post game presser on Sunday:

    “We’ve gotta get better”

    “There is no magic formula”

“Gotta go back to the drawing board, learn from our mistakes and make sure we don’t make them again”

  50. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

Skill-Set Summary: Jones is a dynamite pass-rusher. The way he runs down signal-callers in the pocket and flies around the football field is similar to former Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller. Some media outlets have rated Jones as the best player in the SEC, which is saying something considering the other elite talents like LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu (a Heisman finalist), LSU defensive end Barkevious Mingo, Alabama offensive tackle D.J. Fluker, Alabama offensive lineman Barrett Jones and others. There is no doubt that Jones is a game-changer and a play-maker, but if he is the best player in the SEC is debatable.

Jone’s speed and pass-rushing skills make him extremely disruptive. He has an excellent burst off the edge. That burst takes tackles by surprise and sets them up for him to burn around the corner or dodge back to the inside. Jones also shows some nice pass-rushing moves. He has a good swim move and his agility to weave around blockers is superb.

Jones never takes plays off; he has a non-stop motor and gives relentless effort. In run defense, Jones is best in pursuit. He isn’t particularly stout at the point of attack when runs come directly at him. Jones is a very good tackler even though he could use more bulk. Jones wraps up ball carriers and quarterbacks well. He also skillfully goes for strips when hitting quarterbacks. His closing speed is phenomenal as both a run-defender and pass-rusher.

There are times that Jones does really well at slapping offensive linemen’s hands away, but he needs to get more consistent. There are plays where Jones can struggle when offensive linemen get a hold of him. They hold him and push him around. He needs to improve his ability to shed blocks. Adding some strength to disengage would be helpful. ”

That is scary. Dead on. But…he may not sya the “going back to the drawing board” thing cuz that would be somewhat admitting an issue.

It may be more like… “we’re gonna go back and look at the film and find areas where we can improve…and just try and get better and see if we can’t start winning some ball games”.

For all the Lip service we got from BigMac and Junior about “a-z” evaluation, the status remains quo, whatever that means, basically the same ol’ shinola.

How could this team get so bad so quickly? Maybe BigMac and Junior are desperately trying to fit a square peg on the proverbial round hole, and they’re so bent on doing it their way that they’re destroying whatever progress was made by the team in the last two seasons.

I also think the zone coverage won’t be so blatanlty soft after 2 weeks of film review.

McFadden is the best player on raiders whole roster and ATL giving up 5.4 a carry could mean our team gets rolling in the run game and everything else falls into place after that … pass attck/rested D/field position/points= win

Full autonomy to take an 8-8 team with a roster basically still intact..in fact he’s gotten an upgrade with a healthy DMAC to work with.

You don’t get many shots at being a HC in this league.

We can debate (and will) whether the consecutive 8-8’s were a “mirage” or not, or whether we should take games away becuz Palmer was playing near his home in LaJolla, but it is what it is.

If DA sees no reason to make any changes, he’ll have to suffer too…with mounting losses and all that goes with that. Which includes good luck with getting another HC gig.

    I don’t think he’s intentionally torturing us, but I wonder sometimes…

But seriously, losing hurts him too. He’ll try and blame Al Davis like everyone else, but noone’s gonna buy it.

Every team has a puncher’s chance…it’s just this sunday the chance hovers around 2-3%…….that’s not to say that people here don’t go into sundays hoping miracles happen.

But to ask an objective person to expect the Raiders to win this sunday is just being delusional.

  131. CJ Legend 34 Says:

No reason crying over spilt milk but I hated the fact that Al let Nnamdi go and paid Routt and Huff those crazy contracts. Neither one of those guys was worth that money! Nnamdi was proven at the CB position. If he was still on the team we would be light years ahead at the corner position.

Not to mention how Huff said he reached out to Nnamdi this year to ask him about his corner technique and Nam schooled him. Could you imagine him doing that for this team now.

I hope we bring Nam back one day and have him play safety after he has aged or nickel.

  132. CJ Legend 34 Says:

Yeah even given Sunday a pro team can win a game, but lets be honest. Our team has sucked @$$ so far!!! We have to get better! So they beat a injured Stealers team.

We still have a lot of talent on this team we just need to make it come together. That Denver game was painful.

Must be some major red flags we don’t know about. That’s the only thing I can think of,….

  141. JLofty Says:

Yes CJ, that is absolutely the truth. It takes time.
It took the Texans 3-4 years to get that offense rolling with a fairly capable set of offensive coaches.
I think DA took the wrong approach of trying to change too much too fast. hurts in the short run for sure but it might pay dividends in the long term…
Hopefully they made some adjustments last/this week and we get some dirty bird bbq wings on Sunday AM….

  142. raiderinparadise Says:

PLAX would have been a nice addition 4-5 weeks ago …. but with the bye already behind us and Hagan already knowing the whole offense, its pointless. PLAX would be a 1 season pick-up anyways and for him to join now would be a learning/conditioning curve/timing curve with Carson and all… Not worth it to me. We need to get to the red zone often to make PLAX valuable anyways. He is a red-zone machine but the other 80 yards on the field he isn’t that guy anymore in his career at this point.

    Thx Purvisman. No problem.

Sorry, I was referring to our esteemed HC. I was just trying to point out that he too suffers by not making improvements IF by sticking with the “status quo” results in more and more big losses.

As far as what I do immediately to make things better? I would bench McClain and move Burris to MLB and then Goethel to Burris’s spot.

Also, I would have Palmer go more no huddle to keep defenses off balance.

Those are just a couple of things I would do.

    You’re right. We’ll see Sunday.

  151. raidersla Says:

Typical. Al Davis believed in domination, not status quo. Why did Mark go bargain-basement? Reggie is concerned with “character guys.” My favorite Raiders would never have fit that mold, and I am quite sure that was not the most important consideration for Al. What Mark should have done was put a whiz kid MBA in charge of the finances of the team, asked Gruden to take over football operations and brought back John Marshall for the defense. Instead we have a rookie who inherited the 7th best rushing attack in the NFL, so he promptly converted it to a zone blocking scheme which is a major failure and was the last time it was tried. He inherits a Pro bowl caliber dropback quarterback, so what does he do? Try to force him to be Steve Young. How has the 3rd down and short “0′ pass route worked out for us? How are we doing with YAC? Anyone see defenses fooled? Were things left in such bad shape that there was no way to sign free-agent cornerbacks and squeeze the salary cap somehow? Did he have to go for castoffs and have no backups. Forcing Huff to be a starting cornerback, how did that work out the last time it was tried? The only time we had success was when Carson Palmer took over the offense in the 4th quarter to beat Pittsburgh. Go Raiders!
