Final: Falcons 23, Raiders 20

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, October 14th, 2012 at 4:49 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Sorry for the delay . . . issues with Internet specfically related to posting on the blog. But as Carson Palmer might say, no excuses. It’s on my shoulders.

Anyway, here’s a link to the game story in Bay Area News Group papers.

Here’s a link to a story by correspondent Guy Curtwright on an Oakland pass defense that picked off its first three passes of the season and improved dramatically but gave up just enough ground in the end to Matt Ryan for Matt Bryant to kick a 55-yard field goal.

Here’s a link to the Raiders notebook, with Carson Palmer taking the blame for the defeat.

Who ya taking?…be careful, last time that happened you gave some illiterate retard 60 million bucks. LMAO

    ==================================================

Al’s dead, so there’s nothing to be gain from rehashing the JaMarcus pick.

Your bigger concern should be Oakland getting back to the Super Bowl sooner than your beloved Niners.

  7. Sullivan44 Says:

Jerry, screw your colleague who’s trying to puff his pom poms for Matt Ryan. For Christ’s sake the Raiders were in a prevent and gave them the 55 yarder, that Bryant muffed if not for Allen trying the tired timeout rouse. Ryan was shut down today.

  8. Kirk Says:

McFadden runs better in a power running scheme.

Everyone knows this except for Knapp and Allen.

    They should both be fired.

  9. VanHeathen30 Says:

Palmer is not the problem with this team…
Executing the plays, special teams especially punt coverage and receiving is in need of some tuning up…but this team looks ready to go…

    4-4 after next 3 weeks…

    GO RAIDERS

  10. Sullivan44 Says:

power running scheme with McFadden: 8-8, pretty much forever.

Zone blocking scheme with Goodson: 8-8 this year, 10-6 next year, 14-2 and Super Bowl year after that.

  11. Kirk Says:

I have been watching pro football for 50 years, and Knapp is the worst OC I have ever seen.

Weak sauce sully, stick to your guns bra. You are one of the main Carson apologist now your bailing & back peddaling.

Just pathetic. These Carson worshippers seeing their ridiculous ideas of superbowls parades explode into orange & black flames. Now they are jumping ship like the rare they really are.

ALEX & SULLY…… WHERE IS THE INSTANT UPGRADE?????????

    What a joke. Palmer sucks

  13. Sullivan44 Says:

I have an idea, how about we send McFadden away right along with the power blocking scheme? We don’t need McFadden. He isn’t anything close to what he was drafted to be.

  14. Sullivan44 Says:

Carson Campbell does suck, I agree.

  15. Twocents Says:

I would say our OL is more responsible for the loss than Palmer.

Remember that the proper term is “angle blocking,” not “power blocking.”

People only like it because “power blocking” sounds cool. Most have ZERO knowledge about what makes the ZBS different from angle blocking.

  28. RaiderReggie Says:

If you played football even at the high school level you never throw a ball in the flats inside the red zone that let to that interception for a touchdown today. I saw Jay Shroeder do it for the Raiders a few times when they were in L.A. and Carson Palmer reminds me of Jay Shroeder. Also, Greg Knapp should have known not to call a play like that.

  29. zopi Says:

Great pass out of the end zone to Moore for 50, signature Palmer.
The pick six at the moment of truth, signature Palmer.
    Dazzle, pop, and fizzle.

He might not be “the” problem, but he’s not the answer either, and he was “the” problem today.

  30. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

    Kk,

I have had the priveledge of traving off shore twice. Ok I won’t bring up how jc was far superior to Carson in both wins & turnovers in his tenure.

I will however punish those that tried to sell me on the instant upgrade garbage that I knew was pure lunacy from the start.

Jfb, dmac, bay2la, & everybody else that dancers in the street when Palmer went down.

You have to admit this is putrid & doesnt come close to what we had last year.

  32. Raiders for life Says:

Raiders won today, white hats fk’d them.
I see improvement. Who the fk is #71 and #49?

    Sully, don’t bother responding. K

  33. blackandsilverside Says:

Raiders looked good today, especially considering they were playing Atlanta. I don’t think CP’s boneheaded INT lost the game since if you calculate the game, time wise, if Oakland had scored with an INT, Atlanta had plenty of to score following and tie the game.

In reality it was always coming down to the last minute field goal.

The loss can be blamed on Knapp and his insistence in almost exclusively using DMAC. When the ball is handed to Goodsen he seems to rip of 40 and 50 yard runs.

I keep telling everyone that DMAC is no elite back. He is an excellent back, but not great nor elite. You can’t base a game on his performance.

What isn’t working, won’t work, and until the second half of the 4th quarter it DMAC, DMAC, DMAC for little gain.

If dumbass Knapp knew how to use his players and call a game we would have beat down Alanta by 3, if not 4, TDs.

  34. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

Serious questions must be asked of the coaching staff as well at this point. Giving up half time leads in some games being blown out in second halts of others.

Da not looking to good so far

  35. Silverandblack666 Says:

Palmer did his job he drove us down for a TD the D could not hold as usual and we lost.

The guy makes one bad throw you are all over him. Mike Vick has 11 turnovers in 5 games and no one is calling for him to be benched I would take Palmer over Vick and Cam Newton this year the way they are playing!

  36. blackandsilverside Says:

…..if Oakland had scored WITHOUT*** the INT………

  37. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

    Knapp didn’t fumble twice & throw a pick 6 …. again!

Lucky we didn’t get blown out, falcons tried to give it to us but Palmer gave it right back

    SimPly putrid

  38. Silverandblack666 Says:

Imagine how good Palmer could be if he had a running game and time to throw the ball like Ryan has.

You tards are so blinded buy your own tainted opinions that you cannot see what the real issue is you just blame Palmer.

Good thing smart fella’s like you dolts are not running the team.

  39. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

    1bad throw?!?!

Palmer was rattled by the pressure from the start. He audibles into sacks, & turned the ball over. Had atlanta taken this game seriously it wouldn’t have been close.

    5-10 39 picks in 30 games

Wake your game up bra, Palmer is finished

  40. RaiderReggie Says:

The Raiders defense 3 interceptions today and the offense did not capitilized on it.

  41. realtruraider Says:

  42. Raiders for life Says:

    Mistic,
Don’t forget the easy TD pass that Palmer threw to Myers that bounced off his fkn chest. Perfect throw, should have have been 6 points.

  43. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

  46. realtruraider Says:

Mistic is in full meltdown mode lol. Just think if our D wouldn’t of played prevent and we went into OT with CP3 throwing a game winning TD,the guy/woman probably would of jumped off a bridge by now lol. He is so clueless its not even funny anymore, its just sad

  47. Silverandblack666 Says:

If your stupid enough to sit here and blame Palmer for all of our problems when we are averaging 2.6 yards per carry I cant help you bro your football IQ is too low for us to converse any more.

  48. Method To My Madness Says:

Marcus….Palmer will never be a SB winning qb….but with a offense suited for him we at least have a chance…schit was fked in March….paid 12 mil for a 33 yr old…Reggie stinks

  49. Raiders for life Says:

    Here you go mistic,
Veldheer misses his assignment causing Palmer to get blind sided just before he passes the ball, he fumbles. That CP’s fault??????

  50. Silverandblack666 Says:

We have many issues that need to be addressed on this team and QB is not one of them right now.

  52. raiderzmaverick Says:

Our back-up RBs are better suited for this scheme, neutralizing the threat that McFadden is. Better to just play the players that fit the scheme as Knapp doesn’t fit the scheme to maximize the talent on the players.

  53. J Hill Says:

Easy to pick out a certain player from week to week and point the finger.

Prett easy to see that Willie Smith, Veldheer, and Palmer made key MENTAL errors that cosy us this game.

  55. J Hill Says:

    666,

At what point does the QB get blamed for an in ept offense?

  56. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

Palmer stinks, knapps offense is his last & best shot. He was even worse last year in hu jack/ suanders vertical game. He just didn’t have the s arts or accuracy to make it work like his predecessor.

Better keep him doing the dink & dunk baby steps thing, let him hand off the ball & try to hide him. He is a liability whose days are numbered, while he stokes the appetite for his eventual replacement.

More ints for tds than any qb since 2005. ….

Stop making excuses for this loser

  63. Stringer Bell Says:

Why are we still talking about Chicago’s backup qb. Do you think he could get this running game going? The problem is the poor OLine play.

  64. Silverandblack666 Says:

    “666,

At what point does the QB get blamed for an in ept offense?”

When he is making bad reads at the LOS or not hitting the open receiver. Or like Mike Vick has 11 turnovers in 5 games.

  66. RaiderRetribution Says:

    Raiders defeat Jacksonville or
    Reggie becomes a wholesaler.

  67. 504 Raider Says:

Here is where we lost the game:
Second possession we pass on the 58 yd FG attempt and decide to punt.

Then later on 2nd and goal from the 2 we pass instead of run. Then run on third down when everyone in stadium knew we were running the ball.

But the pass should have been caught by Myers.

That is 7 points right there we left on the field.

  68. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

I predicted the Raiders would be waxed today.. and lose.

Well they lost and this kind lost is no better then being waxed. When u lose for 10 str8 years there are no victories.

Raiders can lose next week but they all feel sorry for themselves and realize the season is now over

Goodson is a better ZBS runner then DMAC. DMAC had a huge whole all he had to do was make one cut back.. but he runs full speed into back of of his Oline guy. Palmer is part of the problem cuz he has to know that the Vanilla offense NAP is running is predictable and that the CORNERS knew what was coming and jumped the route.

Doesnt matter anyhow, not like the Raiders were making the playoffs or superbowl anyway with this ATL win

  69. raiderzmaverick Says:

Hey, McFadden has averaged under 3 yards per carry every game practically.
Despite no threat of a run game really at all (I mean getting 3ypc doesn’t scare many teams) we still move the ball through the air. The problem is getting it into the end zone, which the playcalling somehow moves the ball and then stops when we get even remotely close.

Just remember this about McFadden – before Hue came along, half of the blog here were calling him McShoeStrings and saying how he’d get tackled by a blade of grass. He looked just as tentative as now. I mean he still plows over people when he gets any room to run and is still fast as hell. Just not comfortable. I blame that more on the coaches (as obviously it was clear in his earlier years too that he was tentative and unconfortable in this scheme)

  70. Method To My Madness Says:

Ok Marcus….since you are a small time promoter…what if they club you were working with didnt put you in a position to win? What if they didnt help assist making your event the best it could be?

Or how about when you work at Kaiser and your supervisor putting you in bad spot after bad spot…come on Marcus be real now

Lenart is definitely not the better QB, but probably would post better stats with Knapp calling the plays. Goodson definitely isn’t the better RB, but would also post better numbers under Knapp.

Stupid to be stubborn about it. It’s obvious that the more “talented” players are starting, but it’s also obviously that it doesn’t flow as smoothly as it should based on their talent level.

  77. Silverandblack666 Says:

Palmer was best in situations like last year in SD when he threw the ball only 20 times and Bush had 150 plus yards on the ground….we won the game.

Hue knew how to use Palmer these guys clearly do not!

  78. RaiderRetribution Says:

Time to activate Bergstrom and Nix, let’s see what we’ve got.

  79. alex7 Says:

    Umm, SnB666

Palmer did fairly well vs the Bears, Lions, and Chargers when he threw it up 45 times for 350+ yards and 3 TDs last year.

He does well, like every other QB in the NFL, when his team can run the ball and the D can be stout at the end of the game.

How can you not recognize the Oline being the MAIN problem?

Next year, we will need to replace Carlisle, Smith, AND Briesel.

1st rd pick HAS to be on the Oline.

Seymour will be retired. Kelly will be a backup DT.

Seymour retired in 2009…Kelly has always been a backup

we had most penalties the last two years and dmac ran well….im not listening to your garbage mayne

  104. J Hill Says:

1st rd pick and some nice FA dollars MUST be spent on getting 2 starters for the Oline.

I assume Bergstrom will be a starter.

  106. ChrisinNC Says:

I like Palmer, but I just don’t see him coming through in the clutch. When the pressure is on, at the end of games late in the 4th quarter, he just hasn’t shown that he’s capable of coming through consistently. Doesn’t make him a bad QB, but also compromises his ability to lead us to a championship.

Jason Campbell had tremendous heart and courage to come to this team, when we were in the dumps and no one would even consider us. He stepped on the field and gave it his all. He took care of the ball. Does he have the passing ability of Palmer? No. But he also didn’t seem to fold in the clutch like Palmer has been either. He was a consistent, steady force. And I, for one, appreciated that.

  107. Silverandblack666 Says:

Yeah “B” we did have a discussion before pre-season about how the zbs would not be a good fit for DMac

We also talked about Palmer not being a good fit for the WCO

  108. Stringer Bell Says:

Not sure why Des Bryant is not getting the majority of the snaps at DT. Have Seymour just be a situational sub at this point.

  109. ChrisinNC Says:

I’m just tired of these knucklehead decisions by our QB in crunch time. That’s awesome he can rack up stats for most of the game, but can he deliver when it matters? That’s all I’m asking.

Another needle dk kinda move by Allen

Mostly agree with your comments except for the Bergs. Dude is 27 and if he can’t get on the field now, then he could very well be a wasted #3 draft pick.

  113. J Hill Says:

I’m not going to cry about the ZBS, B.

Again, move Wiz back to LG and Coops back to RG.

Seymour’s contract expiring will free up a lot of money. McFadden’s contract is expiring as well. I think with his injury issues he wont command a big contract.

    666,

Palmer is a good QB. No question.

I thinkwe are looking for a better chess player in certain situations.

Just can’t throw that pick 6 today.

Can’t keep throwing the ball to the TE short of the sticks on 3rd down. Or any other rec for that matter.

Audible into some 3rd down plays that work. Should be able to see the defense, identify a mismatch, and get us into that play.

  119. Stringer Bell Says:

The other mind boggling coaching decision is what happened to using Marcel Reece. It seems he is not even in the game plan even poses a matchup problem for teams.

  120. bigsnow81 Says:

Palmer made up for the INT. This loss is squarely on the defense.

I remember at least a couple of games last year where Palmer charged us down the field and scored late in the game to take the lead only to have the defense collapse last second to lose it.

I think that the Gut and DA both are very conservative and don’t want to “stay the route” even if it’s not working, and will continue even through at least another year.

The truth is that the ZBS can work – it’s just gotta have the right personnel. So it’s down to “execution” in their mind as “look at Houston”.

  135. Sullivan44 Says:

Massacre taking place at ATT park. And not just Joe Buck’s voice. Cardinals killing the Giants, too.

  136. raiderzmaverick Says:

Sullivan, last year when Mc Fadden was healthy, did you see any other RB who was more dangerous?

Noone combined the speed, ability to make people miss and just plowed over players like McFadden did the last 2 year when healthy. He averaged over 5 yards per carry for gods sake!

  137. Sullivan44 Says:

Cards are hot. Think they might win it all.

  138. raiderzmaverick Says:

I got a little laugh though – before with the replacement refs we had the 2nd least penalties in the league.

Now that the regular regs are back we get flagged 12 times. Gotta love thinking the conspiracy theory is still alive and ticking.

  139. Sullivan44 Says:

5 years in and any team McFadden’s on should know they’re winning 10 games. Not the case. Piss off with your excuses.

    Raiders don’t even………never mind.

Just keep building on the TEAM. Carters presence helped to day forsure.. The DEFENSE of line was a tad bit better.

Meanwhile, a TON of semi-pros (including me) wanted Reggie to draft Alameda Ta’amu or Josh Chapman with our first pick last April.

Well, Chapman is out for the year because his knee is stil hurt, and Ta’amu just got arrested for both driving under the influence and fighting the cops who arrested him.

Looks like Reggie made the right call after all. Here’s a wild thought: Maybe he knows more about football than we do.
