Final: Raiders 26, Jaguars 23, OT

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, October 21st, 2012 at 5:33 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Beat a hasty retreat downstairs before I got a chance to post this . . .

Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 40-yard field goal following a fumble recovery by Joselio Hanson as the Raiders escaped with a 26-23 overtime win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Oakland, 2-4, trailed 20-6 entering the third quarter and generally had itself to blame for the Jaguars being in position to win.

Jacksonville won the toss, got the first possession in overtime, and wide receiver Cecil Shorts III was stripped by Lamarr Houston on a short gain on third-and-21.

After quarterback Carson Palmer kneeled on the ball one time, Janikowski kicked the game winner to send the Jaguars to their fourth loss in five defeats.

Palmer had tied the game with a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter to cap a 58-yard drive.

It came after Oakland had considered sending the field goal team on the field with 3:53 remaining to cut Jacksonville’s lead to 23-19.

Oakland thought better of it, called time out _ it was their last time out and came back with a an end zone heave from Palmer to Darrius Heyward-Bey. He was fouled by Aaron Ross in the end zone, giving the Raiders the ball at the 1-yard line.

Following a Jacksonville penalty for too many men on the field, putting the ball at the half-yard line, Palmer snuck in for the score to tie the game 23-23.

It capped a 58-yard drive, with the big play an 18-yard strike to a leaping Streater on third-and-6 to 25-yard line.

The Raiders forced to punts before the end of regulation without letting Josh Scobee within field goal distance, punted once themselves, and took over at their own 12 with 29 seconds left.

Following a 13-yard run by Darren McFadden to the Raiders 31-yard line, Palmer spiked the ball with 11 seconds left and found Streater for a 23 yards to the 46-yard line. Sebastian Janikowski was short on a 64-yard field goal attempt as time expired.

The Raiders pulled within a score on a 31-yard field goal by Janikowski, with Oakland penalizing itself out of the red zone and settling for a field goal with 6:52 left in the fourth quarter.

After the Jaguars’ first score on an 80-yard drive _ and a 42-yard touchdown pass from Gabbert to Shorts on a blown coverage _ the Raiders essentially gift-wrapped the next 16 points, with Jacksonville needing only 33 net yards to get to 23 points.

A 5-yard Rashad Jennings run capped a 16-yard drive courtesy of a muffed punt on a fair catch by Phillip Adams.

A 50-yard field goal by Scobee resulted from a desperation back-handed attempt at a shovel pass while going down from Palmer, with Derek Cox getting the interception.

A 40-yard field goal by Scobee came on a 4-yard drive courtesy of a 28-yard punt return by Mike Spurlock, setting up a 17-yard drive to the Raiders 22.

Finally, a 45-yard field goal by Scobee resulted from a sack-fumble of Palmer, the Jaguars recovering at the Oakland 24.

Listen, okay. I can see both sides here.

A win is a win. Great that we won instead of lost! Dammmed great!

But, what I also see is that we were horrendous most of the game. And that the offensive (specifically the run game) needs to CHANGE SOMETHING – either the scheme or the person they’re handing the rock to. Because 2 yards per carry without a more creative passing game won’t get us wins.

  2. papertiger418 Says:

Thank God! Only 2 more wins to get back to .500

Somehow I don’t think it will be that easy, though.

We won who cares if it was ugly or pretty … I know our O still needs to be better and we need better natural pass rush .. but those things can be achieved after a win too , so stop crying after we just won , makes some of you look like pathetic trolls

Yeah except we hired a GM for the first time and he wanted to go his own way… and stop crying about hue already.. Hue’s O never scored points in 2nd half of games… with Hue i guarantee we would have laid down after being down 2 scores coming outta half time

I honestly don’t care about Hue being here. I would’ve preferred him staying, but ain’t crying about it.
What I do care about is that we hired Knapp who is a PROVEN low producer who came and changed what was working and made it a dysfunctional offense with some AMAZING weapons, and noone is actually trying to change anything to fix it. They’re just “staying the course” while it keeps not working week after week.

And we can see that DA’s idea of winning the games on defense with a ‘ball control offense’ (which was why he hired Knapp) isn’t working, and the offense which carried us the last 2 years to respectibility looks less than middle-of-the-pack and can’t get 3 yards per carry for the life of them.

You’re right – they change the offensive game plan, and get McFadden back to the races, and get creative with our offensive weapons we’re off to the races.

But, is Knapp going to do that? That’s my thing, and has been since the day he was hired, and I wish like hell I was wrong and each week I keep wishing someone would step in to change things up a bit to make that happen.

The whole performance of the O just comes down to how well our O-line is doing and our players adjusting to it … It’s not a co-incidence we did well last year because our O-Line was pretty good for the most part of last year and we started struggling once the O-line started playing bad late in the season.. i think this Oline start doing better along with DMAC making Adjustments , we should be fine

Not sure this group of offensive coaches (i.e. Knapp & Pollard) can fix the problem. They are the ones that created it and believe it is coming together with patience. We don’t have the luxury of patience and hopefully neither do they. Knapp is perpetual failure & has NEVER been a successful play caller for any team, anywhere, anytime. There’s nothing that I’ve seen or noted that would change that outlook. Pollard & Knapp have jointly destroyed what was a half way decent O-line.

the reason I bring up Huejax so much is becaused most of you pissed on him and look at our O now CP3 has to call his own plays to move the fckn ball. yall failed to realize Chuck B had a job to do and HE FAILED MONUMENTALLY and cost us 4 wins. and for all you that say Huejax was a HC and he was supposed to oversee the whole team (which is true) but I tell you what give that SB chucky won at TB to Dungy and MKiffin as their D was what did the job(you see what gruden did going forward FIRED) Give that SB Brian Billick won and give it to Marvin Lewis as HE made that team into champs with a record setting D. What happened to Billick? FIRED and what happen to Marvin Lewis? HC. Hue couldnt do it alone like the Greatest show on turf did (and even they had a lil D) but he did enough
    to warrant a second year.

Yeah except we hired a GM for the first time and he wanted to go his own way… and stop crying about hue already.. Hue’s O never scored points in 2nd half of games… with Hue i guarantee we would have laid down after being down 2 scores coming outta half time
    —————-

so DA gets a pass AS A ROOKIE HC but Hue doesnt? at least Hues O scored at all and had us at 4-2, AND Hue had a lot more to deal with than DA like a lockout and losing his star players. Da has had every thing Hue didnt have and the return investment is 2-4 with Hue 4-2. but hue gets no pass for being a rookie HC right? you guy are wayyyy off on this one.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

It counts for EVERYTHING! It’s all about learning to win. That was said in an earlier post as well. There are TWO teams w winning records in the AFC at the start of the day (a few more now). But it’s pretty obvious there is a lot of parity in this league. So it would follow that the talent level from team to team is somewhat equal. It’s all about execution and coaching. Period. And I’m not saying we don’t have issues with both of those. We r lacking on both pretty severely actually. I’m a knapp hater too, but we have a young coaching staff and new schemes and young players.

We just might be learning how to win, at home at least. If we can do the same at KC, Idc how ugly it is, we just might have something. Maybe…….

just win baby…losing breeds failure..winning is always a step in the right direction. when is the last time a raider team came back from 14 in the 2nd half to win a game. to me that alone is a big step. this game doesnt make me over confident but does allow me to look forward top at least next week

True, but I’d be feeling a lot better about next week’s game. Right now all we can say is we beat the possibly worst team in the NFL. I think we need to be better than that. We should be better than that but, we are not. Why not? We are supposed to be getting better each week. Can you honestly say that is happening? I can’t.

I’m hoping the coaching staff won’t see it that way.

    Pathetic showing.

I dont want to hear any crap about a “win being a win”.

We still tried to lose that game.

That game didnt feel like a win. Just barely better than a loss.

All I can say is, build on it. Beat KC and we are just a game away from .500 and just a game away from a 3 game win streak.

After a 3 game win streak, anything is possible.

But our O-Line has to pull their heads out of there a55es. Meyers cant block. Briesel sucks. Palmer keeps getting killed. Veldheer is unrecognizable. Just plain pathetic.

We certainly were not the weakest when I last checked but we are certainly giving indications that we could be with little extra effort. That does not speak well for our coaching staff. DA better step-up & take care of business within his own group of coaches. We all know where the problem(s) lie(s). You know what we all know. The question is how long will it take for DA to act on the obvious. If he waits too long & really loses the team & fans, he may be cutting his own throat by doing nothing. If he’s going to be the leader, then lead. Otherwise get the hell out of the way and let someone else lead.

———— if Hue was still the coach you would see why esp with the D playing like it is now thats all hue needed and this team woulda been 12-4 last year.
BUFF,DEN,DET,SD all on Chuck B look it up.

wow..and i thought a HC actually took responsibility for entire team. Hue had authority to trade for palmer but no authority to replace chuck b or get involved in the D game plan? cmon…if Hue doesnt get a HC job next year will you finally give in? I mean if hes such a hot commodity someone would recognize his genius beside you?

I hear you. But can we feasibly make that change in the middle of the season and change our entire offensive scheme from ZBS to power blocking?

  241. JB Says:

HuJack is history. He’s no longer here and not likely to make his way back. He did some really good things and a few blunders too. That’s all over. Move on. We have rwal problems on this team to deal with & interjecting HuJack into the discussion is fruitless.

There’s a saying that no matter what color you paint a turd, it’s still a turd. We got a couple or three turds now on staff. They are bringing us down badly. How do we get rid of them? It’s time to flush these losers and become the team we need to be. If we wait too long all we get is a ring around the bowl & that’s not the ring we are looking for.

  245. Bob Marley Says:

The difference between 2011 and 2012 is coaching and scheming, plain and simple.

Most of the starters return and those who left did it because we didn’t want them, so starting personnel and key players remain basically the same and any changes were made because of our coaching staff and GM decided so.

So, we sit at 2-4 after 6 games when we were 4-2 last year with the following averages:

    2011 Offense 25.6 ppg-Defense 25 ppg.
    2012 Offense 18.8 ppg. -Defense 28.5 ppg.

That’s a huge downgrade, you can nitpick stats and try and spin it in many ways, but that’s the bottom line, we got worst.

This 2012 team looks in disarray, if Hue was coaching it, everyone would be blaming him for such a bad on-field product, the double standard here is beyond ridiculous.

Failure to execute comes from practice and Coaches run practice, teaching and making your players better is also a huge part of coaching.

  246. eastoaklandraider Says:

well give chuckies SB To Dungy and MKiffin and give Bill Billick SB to Marvin Lewis but wait… Chucky and Billick oversaw the WHOLE TEAM well both of those guys got fired shortly after the SB THEY SAW OVER and Dungy went on to get another an Marvin Lewis Has Brought the Bengals up to respectability. Hue wasnt the problem smart guy.

  247. RaiderRetribution Says:

Huff has vastly improved at cornerback.

    Houston’s best game today.

Moore proved he’s Raiders’ most productive player.

Reece incorporated into the offence finally.

  248. RaiderRetribution Says:

Dungy went on to get another what, super bowl championship?

Indy was his first, if your logic OS correct, then Gruden’s tram also went to the super bowl our Raiders that is was Gruden’s not Callehans’ he proved that the following year.

  249. MikieG Says:

So far it looks like our Defense has gotten the memo–Our offense however, looks just as bad, if not worse than ever. The biggest problem from what I see is the lack of imagination and creativity on the offensive side of the ball. DMAC is NOT seeing the holes as they open, or present themselves, and our Line is not keeping Palmer upright. Getting Palmer pounded on the regular and DMC just playing absolutely horrible are what is holding this team back right now—Knapp calls the most conservative game plan in the league and it just gets completely stuffed till we are so far behind that Knapp just says “F’It” and bypasses himself in order to let Carson run the no Huddle and call his own plays based on what he is seeing, not what Knapp “THINKS” he is seeing…

This Knapp dude has got to go–if he can’t get Goodson or Taiwan, or even T.P some carries in this ‘Vaunted’ offensive juggernaught of a scheme then he needs to be run out of town..Get your playmakers in a position to make plays…Stringing out DMAC to the sidelines time after time after time is an exercise in futility. You don’t think we should try and ISO him on a backer from the slot, or Taiwan 1:1 on a slot corner or crappy OLB from time to time. Come on man! Where is the game planning??
