Raiders sniffing first place in AFC West

Ignore the fact, if you will, that two of Oakland’s three victories are against 1-6 teams, but they are a Broncos loss to the Saints away from a first-place tie in the AFC West after their win against the Kansas City Chiefs today.
Sure, it was the Chiefs, just as last week it was the lowly Jaguars without their starting quarterback and starting running back for most of the game, but it’s also the kind of game the Raiders had a penchant for losing in recent seasons.
From that standpoint, give the Raiders credit for taking care of business and buying another week to get more players healthy and find some answers for their offensive inconsistencies.

– Running back Darren McFadden rushed for 114 yards Sunday. Make no mistake, most of that yardage came long after the outcome was sealed and the Chiefs had cashed it in for the day.
Best case, it’s a start. Worst-case, the Raiders still haven’t figured out a way to get McFadden untracked for an entire game.
At one point, he had 17 yards on 12 carries before he bursted for 19 yards. Late in the game, he tacked on a 28-yarder and finished with 73 yards once the Raiders led by 14 or more.
In other words, the run game very much remains a huge concern.

– The Raiders benefitted from four Chiefs turnovers — interceptions by Matt Giordano and Pat Lee, a fumble by quarterback Matt Cassel and a muffed punt by Javier Arenas.
That was more than enough to offset an interception of Carson Palmer on Oakland’s first offensive play.

– Former Raiders cornerback Stanford Routt intercepted Palmer on a pass for Darrius Heyward-Bey to start the game. From there, the Raiders got the better of Routt, by far, the rest of the game.
Heyward-Bey put a move on Routt on a sideline pass that Heyward-Bey turned into a 32-yard touchdown. Routt also was late making the play on a post route by Denarius Moore that went for a touchdown.
Routt said he enjoys getting paid by “half the AFC West.” On Sunday, he helped both teams, so that’s only fitting.

– The Raiders offensive line did a much better job looking after Palmer today, as promised.
Palmer got smacked around pretty good against the Jaguars a week earlier, prompting the offensive linemen to redouble their efforts and make a point of playing better against the Chiefs. It worked.
Palmer wasn’t sacked on 28 dropbacks, and he wasn’t hit much, either. Palmer did have at least three passes tipped at or near the line of scrimmage.
Overall, Palmer finished 14 of 28 for 209 yards. However, he had a handful of passes dropped that were right on the money,

– The Raiders committed only two penalties for 20 yards today, which represents a huge improvement over the past couple of games.
The Chiefs, by comparsion, got called for five penalties for 40 yards.

– Philip Wheeler led the Raiders with 11 tackles and recorded one of his team’s three sacks. Rookie Miles Burris added sevent tackles.
Rolando McClain rounded out the solid game for the linebacking corps with a sack of Brady Quinn and a few other key plays.

– Coach Allen opted against activating linebacker Aaron Curry to the 53-man roster. He has another week-plus to decide whether to activate Curry, waive him or place him on injured-reserve.
Allen said he anticipates Curry being activated before the 21-day window expires, perhaps in time for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game next Sunday.

Stevie brown has the takaway mojo.. i was a fan
    ____________
wasn’t he a converted linebacker? playing safety for us he always seemed to make a play on the ball, don’t remember if he had any picks but certainly had a nose for the ball. should have let him develop. Brown at FS and Chris Clemons at DE would be nice

  • inonewordraider

is this the first game so’oto was activated?

  • CanuckRaider

Stevie was given his walking papers after being pointed out clowning on the sidelines after taking a 15 yarder for knocking a returner who hadn’t touched the ball yet out on a return.

Stevie wasnt as fast as al scolorships

How in the world can someone with a name like Amysincharge call me a loser. Take the skirt off your own behind, make AMY give you back your big boy boxers, wear the pants on in your house first f@g before you talk to a real man that way.

Now with taht being said, I don’t care for T.O, Plax or Chad Johson on a personal level, I think they’re all dunces at the lowest level, but those guys can play receiver and talent wise they’re better than anything the Raiders have right now. Liek I said, 1 year contract to 1 or all of them and keep it at that. What cant he Raiders lose other than games and that’s nothing new at this point.

  • Marks hair

I dont remember if he switched pos. Just a fs in my brain fog.

  • CanuckRaider

Plax is the only one of those three that I would touch.

  • CanuckRaider

#656: Yeah…Originally a LB…Was usually around the ball at safety but did blow one play that cost us a game.

Great Game by the Raiders. And how bout those shenanigans where Crennell comes out and says Brady Quinn is going to play the entire season, and then yanks him after three series? Suuuurrrrrrrre his bell got rung. But any way, we got to see two of my favorite plays in football gotta love the roughing the Q where their Oline gets pissed. And some of you don’t like Rich Seymour. And my favorite play: the Kneeldown

  • CanuckRaider

#659: Quinn went out with a concussion…Looked like crap until then anyway…Seymour played well but slamming Cassel near the end was stupid and cost a TD.

two weeks, two starting qb’s knocked out of the game

Good job Raiders, Coaches and Players seem to be coming together at the right time and I think a previous lack of trust-chemistry was holding us back up until last week, I loved to see DA showing McFadden some love after one of his runs, I think it’s the first time I’ve seen DA show that kind of support for a player on the sidelines and that means something to those guys.

There’s talent on this team and the Coaching is getting better every week, with some bumps of course but kudos to DA, Knapp and Tarver as well as the players for taking care of business yesterday.

  • CanuckRaider

Have to admit I got a bit worried when Quinn went out…Brought to mind the Denver game in Oakland the last year we went to the Superbowl…We knocked Griese out and the Donks came back behind their vet backup (Can’t recall him at moment) and made a tight game of it…After the game Romo said taking Griese out was the worst thing they could have done.

  • inonewordraider

don’t remember the last time i was able to relax and watch the fourth quarter!

  • CanuckRaider

Nice to win by more than one score but still need to get more killer instinct on offense.

What were the penalties called on the KC on-side kick ? KC was flagged offsides and I think Branch got flagged for swatting the kick out of bounds ?

Was watching the game in a sportsbook and the sound was on for the Cowboy/Giant game. Still not sure what the refs called there.

Is it illegal for Branch to knock the ball out of bounds there ? Seen that done quite a few times before and it’s never been penalized. In fact, I’ve seen it done and the player applauded for making a ‘heady’ play.

Rule change ? Or did the refs blow that one ?

Opening line: RAIDS -1.5 over TB O/U 45

  • CanuckRaider

LOL Raider O…Reminds me of a very bust New Year’s Eve at work…We were just about to head in at the end of a super busy day when we get a call for an emergency water turn off…Some old meddling jackass had decided to tackle a dodgy plumbing job when they were hosting a dinner party that night…The guy’s wife was reaming him over the coals…deservedly so I might add…There’s always one it seems.

  • Raiders for life

I thought the Raiders might play down to KC’s level.

I’m not going to point out any negatives. Just going to enjoy this win.

I think it was called because Branch knocked the ball out forward. The ball gained half a yard. As I said, I think that’s what was called. Even the announcers were like, “Someone’s going to have to explain that one to me.”

    Well, GOOD MORNING!!!

And what a FINE morning to be a Raider/SF Giants fan, is it me or does the air smell extra sweet this morning?

To my good friend, DMAC: With all due respect, if the A’s had made it to the Series, they would have enjoyed the same fate as the Tigers. There was no stopping this Giants team, and if you think otherwise, you’re kidding yourself.

Oh, and btw everyone, the SF Giants are exactly the type of team Reggie’s trying to build here. Smart, team oriented, ballers, high on execution. The Wheeler and Burris types. Looking forward to it.

    Easiest schedule ever?

  • CanuckRaider

What’s easy?…We almost lost to the Jags.

  • http://www.raiders.com Raider O

    LOL Canuck.
    Monkeys!

  • hwnrdr

No, i think that the A’s would have not get swept. Maybe the same fate but not in 4!

  • CanuckRaider

You got that right O…Don’t miss working with the public one bit…Lol.

  • Raiderbuck

I just want to say thank you to the SF Giants! They finally brought an end to baseball!! Sorry guys, baseball to me is like watching paint dry.

    How about that run D?????

  • jesusraiderjim

They better keep gellin!!! T.B. had a back get a combined 180 yds yesterday. We can not afford to take anybody lightly.

And for Fvck sake quit saying the easy part of our schedule that is just STUPID!!!

There is no easy part of the schedule.

  • DMAC

I hope fools don’t come in here w/ all the negavity. “They barely won, they beat a sorry team”
Ya’ll need to STFU and enjoy a great victory.
AFC West opponents gets no luv from DMAC!
For once in a long time, I sat back and enjoyed the game w/ out any worries that we would screw it up later.
    But that’s the past…..
We need to beat the Bucs to get to .500

  • hwnrdr

I agree, the d is starting to gel!

  • jesusraiderjim

eah the stress was a non factor for the first time in years

  • Pretty Rick

Anyone still upset with getting rid of Routt? He got that one pick but after that they beat on him all day. And Asomugha is just looking terrible in Philly, constantly getting torched. Could Huff actually be better than Routt and Aso? And could Miles Burris be our MLB next season with Wheeler and a healthy Curry Playn outside? Just wondering.

  • DMAC

I’m no fag or homo, but I luv seeing dem’ dreads flying everywhere, especially when he’s launching at the QB every game.
    Wheeler = STUD
    Great FA acquisition Reggie.
Now you need to lock him up for a few years.

  • jesusraiderjim

The reciever shoulda at least tried to fight for the ball on that pick. Other than that thaks ROUTTT h “he is who we thought he was” as they say!!

Agree! But I will say there was a heck of a lot of acting on that play. Cassel really played it up like a punk. It was not that viscious, but dumb never the less. He should have pulled up!
