Jerry McDonald grades the Raiders off Chiefs game
By Steve Corkran
Monday, October 29th, 2012 at 11:37 am in Oakland Raiders.
Beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders performance in their 26-16 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium:
Pass offense
After an interception on his first pass to Stanford Routt, Carson Palmer was mistake free and threw touchdown passes of 9 yards to Denarius Moore and 32 yards to Darrius Heyward-Bey. Maximum protection schemes were excellent as Palmer wasn’t sacked and barely touched. Too many dropped passes — at least four. Grade: B
Run offense
Darren McFadden had his second 100-yard game on the strength of a 12-carry, 73-yard fourth quarter. Ideally, it’s the way a zone blocking system is supposed to work — running with a lead. He finished with 29 carries and 114 yards. Need to run better earlier in the game, however. Grade: B-minus
Pass defense
Free safety Matt Giordano had his first interception of the season, a classic read of Brady Quinn, and Pat Lee halted a Chiefs drive deep in Raiders territory with an acrobatic interception of Matt Cassel. The Raiders pass rush was very good as Rolando McClain, Philip Wheeler and Richard Seymour had sacks. Grade: B
Run defense
The only flaw was allowing Quinn and Cassel the opportunity to exploit an open middle when pressured from the outside as quarterbacks gained 53 yards on nine carries. The rest of the running game was stuffed as the Broncos finished with 22 attempts for 102 yards. Jamal Charles had just five carries and 4 yards. Grade: B-plus
Special teams
The game swung on a special teams hustle play, with long-snapper Jon Condo getting downfield to recover a muffed punt return attempt by Javier Arenas late in the first half. It set up the Palmer-to-Moore touchdown and gave the Raiders permanent momentum. Sebastian Janikowski was 4-for-4 kicking field goals, flawless as usual in Arrowhead. Grade: B-plus
Coaching
Raiders were much better prepared for a team coming off a bye than the previous week against Jacksonville, and were ready to play from the outset. Good mix of defensive play-calling kept Chiefs guessing all day. Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp placed a priority on pass protection and it paid off, as did sticking with a sluggish running game in the fourth quarter. Grade: B-plus

Enough of Seymours’ salary was guaranteed this year that it would have been really stupid not to play him. He probably won’t be here next year, but I still applaud Al for bringing his attitude and leadership into a drifting aimless defense. He has disappeared at times, but I think that is more aging body than attitude. He has committed some dumb personal fouls, but big ben and last night weren’t among them.

I liked the deep pass to open the game, but DHB HAS to learn to fight for the ball. Maybe he should take some lessons from Rich Seymour how to fight. DHB did look good running over Cheats later in the game tho.

Players are 80% of the game.
You seem to forget that we have not run effectively against a good defense in the last ten years. Look it up.
Miami,Giants, Ravens Steelers etc. all completely shut down our run game.We padded stats agianst teams like the Bucs and Donkeys when they were weak.
Our Oline dictates what Knapp can call.
Are you old enough to remember what the Raiders looked like in the late 60’s and 70’s?
Do you really think Plunkett got better when he came to Oakland? How about Hubbard, Daniels, Van Eeghan etc. Slow, slower and slowest.
THEY WERE GOOD BECAUSE OUR OLINE CRUSHED PEOPLE!!!!!!!
==================================================
Charlie, I’m old enough to have witnessed the great O lines.
Yes, the OLine of the 70’s was one of the greatest ever assembled. Shell, Uppy, 00/Dalby, Vella, Buehler. One for the ages.
I absolutely agree that players are more important than coaches and think your ‘80% of the game’ figure is reasonable.
I do not think it’s fair to place all of the blame on Krapp for the Raider ground game futility.
That said, I do think it’s fair to question the move to the ZBS, or at the very least the inability to have it functioning well by this stage, or having the right personnel to execute it.
I also agree that while an OC is limited in his playcalling capabilities by the personnel available to him, that Krapp is a horrible playcaller and does not use the roster to maximum advantage.
IMO, Krapp is largely (but not completely) responsible for the regression we’ve witnessed offensively. I also think his playcalling stinks and don’t think that’s mainly attributable to personnel woes.
I think we can do a lot better than Krapp.

By 2016 (and definitely by 2020), our Latino population will be too big for this; any candidate will HAVE to appeal to them to get elected.

I’ve been saying over a year on here that Stan Routt is a one trick pony and he can be easily beat.
1. He can only defend the deep ball. Sure enough we go deep on him with our wort deep ball WR (DHB) and he got an int.
2. He got smoked over and over again last year in the redzone with the slant and Palmer abused him with that pass to Moore.
3. You run any patterns other than than the fly pattern and you will get open against Routt. CP and Co proved that yesterday.
Sometimes we bloggers know a whole lot more than the guys who get paid to coach and manage nfl teams. Pioli and Al should have never signed Routt to those ridiculous contracts.

Profootballtalk.com passes along a “theory” making the rounds in the Eagles’ locker room and among league circles that RCB Nnamdi Asomugha has lost his passion for the game.
Asomugha is clearly no longer the cover corner he once was, be it due to declining ability at age 31, or simply because he “doesn’t care about the game like he used to.” It’s believed comments made by Asomugha played at least a minor role in the firing of Juan Castillo. Perhaps benching him for promising youngster Curtis Marsh might have been the Eagles’ better course of action.

The NFL has pushed the trade deadline from 4PM ET Tuesday to 4PM ET Thursday.
The move comes as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the East Coast, forcing multiple clubs (and the league office) to fold up shop on Monday and Tuesday. It’s possible the extra 48 hours will encourage more player movement than usual, but there aren’t strong indications the trade market will be any more robust than it’s been in years past. Dwayne Bowe and Steven Jackson both have legitimate chances to be dealt, but DeAngelo Williams’ odious contract is likely to preclude a move.

Bucs CB Eric Wright is dealing with an Achilles’ injury.
“(It’s) a concern,” according to coach Greg Schiano. Speaking at Monday’s presser, Schiano also refused comment on reports that Wright is facing a four-game ban for violating the league’s PED policy. Regardless, whether it’s because of injury or suspension, Wright is sounding extremely unlikely to suit up in Week 9. That’s bad news for a team that will still be missing Aqib Talib.

And all this about Detroit, than why did the Super-liberal Detroit Free Press endorse Mitt Romney this weekend?
Because BO insults everyone’s intelligence when he uses his talking points about the bailout.
Mitt wanted a structured bankruptcy with gov’t intervention after bankruptcy, not before it. Since we went before it with BO, we bought common stock, and are down 45% on our “investment” as of now.
They both wanted about the same thing, and the city of Detroit knows it as does the state (running neck and neck right now, BTW).
As an example, it would be like BO ordering spaghetti when Romney wanted zito, and BO insulting Mitt for ordering Italian food.

Discipline. It’s all about discipline. When players stay in their spots, make plays and do what they are supposed to do, this team can win. The days of inept penalties (like TK having three offsides on one drive) have to be beaten out of this team for them to truly turn it around.
The offense will grow, the receivers are young and getting better. The Raiders for too long got away with disrespecting their coaching knowing Mr. Davis ultimately called the shots. If there is real accountability, the team will get better…we’re seeing it now. You can only beat who you are scheduled to face, so beating JAX and KC is what we are SUPPOSED TO DO. Tampa is comparable to us, we gotta rattle Freeman and use our experience against VJ to try to shut him down.

Gotta be an injury. He totally shanked one of his punts yesterday in a way I haven’t seen in a long time. I’d expect Marquette King to be punting for us next season because Big Reggie isn’t handing out 4 million/year for a punter like Mr. Davis did.

Hey guys I read something about Raiders possibly giving up a 4th rounder for curry depending on his playing time. I just dont know how much.
Either way if thats true.. I dont even activate him the rest of the year. We need that 4th . anyhow…
Imagine if we move to 3-4 next year? I could see Reggie drafting Manti Teo’ 1st round. Plug him in with burris, mclain, Wheeler.. would be really cookin now.
3-4 Te’o Mclain in the middle.. Burris OLB / pass rusher. Teo’s has a motor that doesnt quit.
Just win baby

October 29th, 2012 at 1:29 pm
Curry isn’t any good, no need to bring him in other than depth and speical teams.
Once activated, I believe he will be, he won’t see the field much defensively, maybe some short-yardage situations.
October 29th, 2012 at 1:30 pm
Slowlando played well yesterday. It appears removing him from field when non-optimal and using him when his skills fit better is quite frankly the biggest change on Defense we’ve seen in 10-15 years…

It looks like I hit a hot button with the term “football ignorant”. I am simply of the opinion that there will not be a quick fix to the mess we have been in for the last ten years. Too many people look at changing schemes and critizing coaches because the fix is percieved as quick and easy.
(How did the Eagles D look yesterday after firing the DC?)
It implies that hope for a Super Bowl contender is just around the corner.
IT IS NOT.
Winning in the NFL requires superior Offensive and Defensive linesa and a competent QB. Those units take time to build and they have been neglected for ten years. Other than Grove,Gallery and Wiz II we have not invested a first or second round pick on either line in the last ten years. You might find the next Upshaw in the 7th round but the odds are against it. (Upshaw was a first round pick).
We are making progress and I have been and always will be a Raider fan.
Thinking coaching changes and new schemes will fix things is what we have tried for the last ten years and it has failed. We need to focus on upgrading player talent and it will take time GIVEN WHAT REGGIE INHERITED.

After the Tigers beat the Yankees in game 1 of their series a guy I know places a $1400 future bet on Detroit to win the WS. He got them at 8 to 5 and I thought it was a horrible bet.

Told him he’s an idiot if he doesn’t hedge the whole thing on the Giants +155.

+++++++++++++++
I hope you are not being fooled into thinking that allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire for people making over $250k per years is actually going to reduce any sort of deficit. Doing so would raise an additional $56 billion in revenue per year….or about 1% of what the Gov spent in 2011.
That money means much more to small business owners trying to keep people employed than it does to Govt idiots trying to get more money to waste in govt spending.
Get more people working and out of their low paying jobs and you raise much more revenue than by raising taxes as the Prez proposes.

Dakota,
I want the grand bargain. I want a reform of entitlements and all programs on the table while raising revenue. Everyone who has an ounce of logic knows we need revenue and spending cuts at the same time. 10-1 ratio is a GRAND BARGAIN. It’s that simple. But your party is held hostage by Grover Norquist. Even Boehner had a deal in place and couldnt deliver because he was scared.
here’s my issues with you guys. You’re not in the 250k range but yet you would be willing to vote against your interest. My friend who is a doctor is all about spending cuts but voting for a guy that is willing to increase the world’s 41% military spender. My other friend is a gulf war vet who benefited greatly from these unemployment checks but is willing to vote out a guy that gave him the most benefits ever for veterans. That vet failed to realize that he can’t get a frickin job because he was too lazy to upgrade his skillsets. The guys in his previous group all got new employments because they got more skills than he did. That unfortunately is the mentality of the ABO crowd.

In the 4th quarter Greg Knapp finally started pitching the ball to Darren McFadden instead of handing it off every run play called. The pitch gives D Mac some room to make those cut backs into the lanes which the zone blocking scheme is designed to do. I will give Knapp some credit for that.
October 29th, 2012 at 6:31 pm
Couldn’t be any happier with the effort we’re displaying out there on run defense. Much more discipline play by our ends sealing off the edge and funneling everything to the middle. LB’ers wrapping up and making great open field tackles.
Well, I could be happier if they were ranked number #1 overall in defense. I like the direction this team is headed in. Only 9 more years and we can contend for the division. lol
