Cornerback Ron Bartell is practicing today for the first time since he suffered a shoulder injury in the regular-season opener.
Bartell was placed on injured reserve/designated to return after his injury, and he wasn’t permitted to return to practice until last Saturday. Given the Raiders were in Kansas City that day and not practicing, today was his first opportunity to get back on the field.
Bartell is working with the scout team for now, which makes sense because he needs time to get back into the swing of things and he isn’t able to play in a game until Nov. 11.
The Raiders have a 21-day window in which to activate Bartell to the 53-man roster. Given he can’t play until the Nov. 11 game against the Baltimore Ravens, he likely won’t be activated this week.
Once Bartell is activated, the Raiders have to make a corresponding roster move to free up a spot for Bartell on the 53-man roster.
That means the Raiders are looking at waiving two players from their current roster within the next 10 days or so, with the prospect of linebacker Aaron Curry also being activated.
— Center Stefen Wisniewski is practicing today despite an ankle injury he suffered against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
Wisniewski’s left ankle is taped rather heavily.
Backup running back Mike Goodson also is practicing on the heels of an injury suffered against the Chiefs. He came out of the game with a turf-toe injury.
— Defensive tackle Richard Seymour is not practicing today. He is on the field, though.
At one point, he spent 15 minutes or so speaking with coach Dennis Allen.
— Right offensive tackle Khalif Barnes (groin) and cornerback Shawntae Spencer also are not practicing. There still is no timetable for their return from injuries suffered against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 16.
Curry is practicing for the seventh straight time since he returned from the physically unable to perform list. The Raiders have one more week to decide whether to activate Curry, waive him or place him on season-ending injured reserve.
