Raiders-Bucs will be on local TV
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, November 2nd, 2012 at 3:05 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders announced Friday their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be televised locally.
It was the second straight time the Raiders requested a one-day extension to sell more tickets. A 26-23 overtime win over the Jacksonville Jaguars drew 51,634 fans but was on television.
A new NFL rule allows teams to declare sellouts by selling 85 percent of its non-suite tickets, giving a slightly larger percentage to the visiting team.
It is the 12th consecutive game the Raiders will be televised in its local market.
With Jacksonville and Tampa Bay out of the way, the toughest sell on the remainder of the schedule would be Cleveland on Dec. 2. The other remaining home opponents are New Orleans, Denver and Kansas City. If the Raiders remain in the vicinity of .500, chances would appear good for a second consecutive season with no blackouts.

Amy just texted me. She says thanks for another “sellout”
Keep this up and Mark will be able to keep the Raiders where they belong

Saints game already looks to be a sellout on Ticketmaster. Browns will be tough to sell out unless Raiders are in the playoff hunt.

Where are the Reggie haters?
Looks like Reggie is the genius we thought he is:
1) released Routt
2) released Wimbley
3) traded Campbell for Goodson
4) brought in lee
5) Hired DA who has drastically improved the Defense
It’s only getting better!!!
November 2nd, 2012 at 3:15 pm
Why do ppl keep bring up michael freakin bush? What part of NO MONEY dont u understand.
Reggie at the time had zero money to pay what bush was look for. He is not worth the 3yr 9 million dollar contract that he got. How many extra games would he have helped us win? IDK… but i do know its not that big of a deal imo. He was stuffed three straight times on the goal line last year as well. but every time we got the 1 yard line Carson or DMAC has gotten in this year.
Goodson is always getting positive yardage when he comes in.. and is averaging like 7 yards a carry. Enough of Bush
Bush was a luxury Reggie/ Raiders couldnt afford nor would he want to imo even if he had the money. THe offense was gonna be built on DMAC.
this year bush has 67 carriers for 247 yards averaging 3.7 yard a carry
Goodson has 15 carriers for 111 yards this year with a long of 43 yards. Avg 7.1 ypc and he is a Kick Returner

everybody and their momma knew we didn’t have money to get good starters at some key positions, and it would have been a stupid decision to keep a backup running back who wanted starting type of money
November 2nd, 2012 at 3:31 pm
Wisniewski said it was nothing but zone-blocking scheme from the outset, which made sense given that’s Knapp’s and offensive line coach Frank Pollack’s pedigree. However, the coaches aren’t so rigid that they are averse to change.
====================================================
Nothing but zone-blocking from the outset made sense ?
What a crock.
I dont give a fk what Krapp’s and Pollack’s pedigrees are. Going with nothing but ZBS from the outset was moronic and made no sense at all.
If anything, the gap blocking that was already in place and working well, and that the players were familiar with, should have been used almost exclusively – and the ZBS should have been slowly phased in as the players got that down.
Instead the genius Krapp decided to go with the ZBS exclusively – even though the team wasn’t ready for it and it failed miserably.
Now all of a sudden the coaches aren’t so rigid as to be averse to change huh ?
Leave it to Krapp to get it bass-ackwards and our favorite beat writer to peddle this garbage.
Should have been gap blocking from the outset with the ZBS phased in – NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

If semis who said Knapp was the problem were right they should be a little bit pleased that the D.A. is taking steps to play more PBS.
Is it better to have a young coach who is learning and willing to change or one who sticks to his plan no matter what?
November 2nd, 2012 at 3:41 pm
^ and ^^ shows sometimes the coaches don’t know better than the players and fans
November 2nd, 2012 at 3:43 pm
Semis are pretty adament that things were better the way they were and should have stayed that way.
The question is what should they do about it?
1) Erect a billboard
2) Beat up Knapp
3) whine about it all year like a MOT

November 2nd, 2012 at 4:02 pm
Well, the Knapp, DA, and RM all insisted that the ZBS was right and good and that the players were at fault for early failures, and that they would NOT be changing.
But the constant whining and critiquing, both here and in other constructive places like B/R’s Chris Hansen, NFLN, and other outlets that broke down film and discussed the issue…..since then, we’ve seen DA finally acknowledge that they would take the bye week to look at everything from A to Z, and since then we’ve now heard how they have slowly but surely increased the amount of Gap blocking scheme, and using that lingo of “going back to what the players are comfortable with and excel at”.
That says to me at some point the coaching staff DID absorb the criticisms they read/heard around the traps, and changed.

November 2nd, 2012 at 4:10 pm
And I’m sure the players themselves, certain leaders on offense, have seen the same problem breaking down film and have likewise pushed the coaches for change.
Also, like I said myself ages ago….the defense was all about being “multi”, yet the offense was being too bland and all about complete ZBS. You heard the coaches, Knapp and Tarver, but especially DA say how it’s important to be “multi” on defense, but when it came to offense they were utterly bland, vanilla a la Knapp’s way, and were quite belligerent in interviews about how the ZBS is the way to go, and they were not going to change anything, etc.
I said ages ago too, how it was wrong to embrace being “multi” on defense but not be “multi” on offense. Where are all the mixed blocking schemes? Where are all the various creative usages of Reece, Pryor, Taiwan, Ausberry, the WRs on other things like end-arounds, exploiting match-ups with McFadden, Reece, Ausberry.
Knapp as an offensive mind is holding back the potential of this offensive roster. The sooner we replace him the better immediately and long-term.
November 2nd, 2012 at 4:13 pm
Because…..basically, the changes made since the bye week are essentially dolling down the things Knapp has brought in, and re-introducing aspects of the vertical offense in existence before.
And that change, lessening the Knapp-influence, has directly resulted in a far more potent offense the last 3 games. The more DA removes Knapp and Knapp’s ideas from the offense, the better it will get.

The offensive line problems stem from poor ol Frank Pollack being overworked.
Wiz snr never replaced and Frank is trying to implement new blocking schemes every few weeks.
DA needs to get Reggie to fund an extra OL coach or two in there. It took Houstom 3 long hard years to get their blocking scheme working with 2 line coaches.
Simple mathematics dictates that trying to implement the same scheme with 1 coach will take twice as long or 6 years.
Even better, hire 3 OL coaches and get the job done properly by the end of the regular season.

The Chargers rank at the bottom of the list because they’re the least threatening, on my opinion, not from a talent standpoint but because they’ve always been soft.

**********************************
These guys have 2 career TD’s receiving between the 3 of them, and 1 came this year.
Now Reece being used more in the run game, I can see.
But passing wise, we are using that trio MORE THAN EVER in the red zone.
^^^^^^^^
Knapp is still an idiot play caller.
Reece should be used more as Bush’s replacement in this offense.
Reece should used more as a runner in short yardage or move the chains type of back to take some pressure off DMC.
Why is Reece being underutilized in the passing game and why can’t DA and Knapp look at last years tape of the way Hue ran the screen game with efficiency with DMC, Bush, Reece and Jones??
More middle screens with two blockers to the outside should be called and set up with DMC, Goodson, Reece and Jones!
The talented weapons in this offense are being wasted under Knapp.

The biggest issue on O looking at the long term is Dmac’s durability. I think we have him through next year, which would give us a reasonable amount of time to make sure he’s not injury prone.
However, I don’t know if Reggie’s going to pay him. ZBS is ideally designed to mitigate the shortcomings of an RB. I imagine he’ll devote more resources to acquiring personnel and staff than any particular player.

__________
Strange point. You assume long term strategy has some brains. This case, well, no. Long term, short term should build around that particular type of player, instead of setting them up for failure. This particular scheme is not creative nor can it make adjustments. Making the players do knapps bidding is akin to next to impossible. If his game planning had any merit, we’d be scoring a lot of points. We have football players on this team. The failure of the zbs is not their fault. The fact it doesn’t work is not their fault. It all rests on the OC. The fact we’re getting rid of the zbs and going gap is the best news I’ve heard about this team in a long time. We have the players. We will have positive short term results setting the way for long term success.

Knapp incorporating more gap scheme in run game
By Steve Corkran
Thursday, November 1st, 2012 at 3:32 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders rushed for 135 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs. A large chunk of that total came during the fourth quarter, and some of that came on several plays in which the Raiders mixed in some gap-scheme blocking.
So says offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, who has come under fire from fans for his implementation of the zone-blocking scheme upon his arrival before this season.
“It was a good balance of zone blocking and the gap scheme, so it paid off pretty good,” Knapp said Thursday. “We definitely increased our gap run-blocking scheme to get a better balance and keep defenses honest, and we’ve done it well, so we’ll keep that same kind of formula working. It’s a good change-up for us to have some kind of gap scheme with that outsize zone. But the big runs came from the outside zone for us in the fourth quarter.”
The Raiders primarily used a zone-blocking scheme early in the season. Knapp said he incorporated some gap-scheme blocking as a response to the lack of success running the ball.
No, it had nothing to do with the ruckus raised by fan calling for Knapp’s job because of his steadfast desire to stick with the ZBS.
“Yeah, we had to make an adjustment,” Knapp said, “and that was a good adjustment for us. It paid off, you betcha.”
Center Stefen Wisniewski said he welcomes the addition of the gap-blocking scheme into the mix.
“It is nice,” Wisniewski said. “That’s more of the stuff we ran last year, so most of us have a lot of experience in that, where we’re still learning the zone scheme. So it helps us because we’re familiar with it and also it’s a nice change-up. Teams aren’t sure what’s coming at them, and it makes us more likely to be successful.”
Wisniewski said it was nothing but zone-blocking scheme from the outset, which made sense given that’s Knapp’s and offensive line coach Frank Pollack’s pedigree. However, the coaches aren’t so rigid that they are averse to change.
“They’re starting to get to know us better, and we’re getting to know them,” Wisniewski said, “so they’re seeing that we can be successful doing both.”
– Knapp has coached and been around some pretty notable quarterbacks during his long NFL career: Steve Young, Michael Vick, Matt Schaub, Matt Hasselbeck come to mind.
You get the sense that Carson Palmer rates right near the top in Knapp’s book based on the portrait Knapp paints of his signal-caller.
“He’s been the rock,” Knapp said. “As you guys hear his quotes and the way he handles a tough loss, he puts it on himself. He’s a true pro, he’s a true leader. He’s really helped us in the pass game from the stance of, we’re a top five team in sacks allowed, but he’s getting the ball out pretty quick, too. He’s done a fine job for us managing the game in that pocket situation and not having frustration.
“He really keeps his cool throughout, through thick and thin. … . He’s special, guys. I don’t know how many guys you’ve been around, but he’s special. He doesn’t say much, but I’ll tell you, Carson Palmer’s special in the way he leads a team and the way he prepares for a game. He’s very, very good.”
High praise, indeed.
– Allen said cornerback Shawntae Spencer’s recovery from a right foot injury he suffered more than six weeks ago isn’t going as well as hoped for.
“He has not had any setbacks,” Allen said. “The progress has slowed a lot more than what we anticipated. We anticipated there would be more progress by this point in time, but it’s coming around a little slower than what we had hoped. It’s through no fault of his, just the nature of his injury.”
Spencer said last Friday that he still experiences some pain in his foot from time to time but that he remains hopeful of a return before long.
“I’m not in control of the timetable,” Spencer said. “Whatever they say, is whatever they say. So, I come to work, do whatever I got to do, do what they ask. Whenever doc clears me, he clears me.”
Spencer hasn’t practiced since he got hurt against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 16. There is no timetable for him to return to practice.
– Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano caused quite a stir earlier this season when he instructed his players to get after Giants quarterback Eli Manning while Manning was performing a kneel down at the end of a victory over the Bucs.
Giants coach Tom Coughlin took exception to the questionable tactic, and he let Schiano know about it during the postgame handshake.
Knapp said he is aware of what transpired and that his players are prepared for the situation should it arise Sunday.
“We’ve alerted our guys, ‘Alright, this is what they’ve done, so don’t … ‘ ”
So, don’t get caught offguard.
“We make sure that we’re in the mode of aggressive blocking up front,” Knapp said. “Sometimes, that down is kind of a relaxed down. We’re making sure, no, don’t take it as a relaxed down. Very similar to when we set up the field goal against Jacksonville, when Carson went out there and just went over a step and took a knee. That kind of blocking scheme, where we’re making sure we don’t let any penetration come through the inside.”
Knapp said this is the first time in his coaching career where he has had to address the prospect of a team going all out during a kneeldown situation.
Allen smiled when asked if he was aware of the dustup between the Giants and Buccaneers.
“We’ll be ready,” Allen said. “Our job is to be ready for anything. So we’ll be ready for it.”
– The Buccaneers traded cornerback Aqib Talib to the New England Patriots on Thursday in the only reported trade before the league deadline.
In a roundabout way, that might preclude the Patriots from re-signing cornerback Sterling Moore — he cleared waivers today — and keep him available for the Raiders to sign.
– Sebastian Janikowski wasn’t in the locker room to talk about being named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month.
So, we turn to Allen for his thoughts on Janikowski receiving the honor.
“That obviously means he’s kicking it good,” Allen said. “He’s done a good job. It’s a comforting thing to know you can put him out there and feel confident that he’s going to kick it through. We’ve put him in a couple game-winning situations, and he’s come through both times. That’s really a comforting feeling for the coach to have to make that decision.”
Janikowski has converted 18 of 19 field-goal attempts this season, with his lone miss coming from 64 yards against the Jaguars. He kicked a 40-yarder in overtime to win that game for the Raiders.
– Remember when Allen said he and his coaches were going to break down the Raiders from “A to Z” during the bye week? Well, here’s Allen’s take on how much progress the Raiders made the past three games.
“We’ve got some things corrected,” Allen said. “We’ve been better in some areas but we still have a long way to go. We still have a lot of things we have to get better at. It doesn’t matter what your record is, that’s always the case. You have to continue to improve throughout this 16-game season.”
– Wide receiver Denarius Moore has scored a touchdown in each of the past three games. On more than one occasion, Moore scored because of his ability to elude defenders in the open field an find a way into the end zone.
That inate ability to get ino the end zone is something that isn’t easily taught, Knapp said/
“It’s awfully hard to coach,” Knapp said. “It’s awfully hard to coach. His YAC ability, yards after catch or contact, whatever you want to choose, he’s got a unique ability to be able to make the first one miss. He has a little bit of space and that makes it awfully hard on defense. It’s a special trait he has, and it’s awfully hard to coach.”

Everything takes time , you think they been having hard time learning ZBS after OTA’s , FUll training camp , Pre-Season, they can’t just implement a “gap scheme” in a week
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:11 pm
One thing I noticed in watching Trent Richardson highlights is he waits….till the blocking develops and then blasts through the hole. I think that’s what DMAC is “supposed” to do..but he only knows one speed and that’s fast forward.
Maybe a zbs/power scheme hybrid is in order? We know DMAC has had success in the zbs but i don’t think it’s coincidence that they employ the power scheme in the 3rd and 4th quarter and DMAC has his best half of the season.

I agree McFadden. They need to keep it simple and not try to change the whole thing in a week, but i think the guys are smart, or familiar enough with the power scheme that they can use like they did against KC.
Not a wholesale change, but like Knapp said- keep ‘em off balance.

243, Interesting thought. So you’re thinking we’ll see less and less of it game by game?
It is nice to see that they did not stubbornly stick to something that wasn’t working well and were willing to do what was necessary to get things going.
I personally think we’ll continue to see the zbs the rest of the yr. I think we’ll continue to see a mix.

Just don’t think DA can throw his buddy Knapp totally under the bus. ‘Mixing’ in a few gap schemes is a soft way of saying fck the zbs. When we have outrageous success with the gap and power, knapp would have to be extremely egotistical and stupid to re-insert the zbs. Doubt DA will allow it.

Yes we did but players are making plays on that side of the ball , On O players are not making plays, Our best player from last year is coming off from an injury, our receivers are unproven and yet we’re still only a couple of plays away from surpassing last years point per game average, i believe we’re on the verge of breaking out on the O, with ZBS or no ZBS, this will get better

McFadden20 was wondering why some of us were/are complaining about Knapp more than the rest of the staff and players.
I can’t speak for all of them, but I can share my opinion.
1- Reggie, DA, and Tarver are rookies at their new positions, and I expected mistakes.
2- Knapp is a vet OC who has struggled the last 4 years of his career as OC with 4 different teams, and that’s why he was working as a QB coach for the Texans.
3- we have most of our starters from last year (on offense).
4- look at the results this year.

November 2nd, 2012 at 9:55 pm
Ahhhh yes. Patience. The word is like a healing salve on a wounded franchise.
Coach Knapp spoke wispy words of wisdom when he said “Let’s try and keep thing’s in perspective here”.
“Perspective”. “Patience”. Let those words be embedded in the very soul of a hungry fanbase.
While doing a bit of grocery shopping earlier, i observed the meticulous craftsmanship of the manager of the deli department. I first observed the manner in which he employed the tools that would create his masterpiece. First, a fresh loaf of french artisan bread, then the fresh, homemade mayonaisse, then the meats. Ahhh yes. Fresh salami along with other cold cuts; and then…the lettuce and tomato to top it all off.
I would of preferred to see a couple shreds of freshly cut onion added, or perhaps a black olive or two, but the creation of the sandwich was complete in the deli worker’s eyes.
Reggie can be likened to a “deli-master” as he crafts together the proper ingrediants in making a delightful sandwich, but just like a finely crafted sandwich takes patience and “perspective” in creating it, so too will Reggie the “deli-master” create a delightful taste tempting sandwich of championship football.
Friends, the sandwich Reggie creates may not have all the ingrediants we may want in a sandwich…such as black olives or tasty shreds of onion..but it will be a tasty treat nonetheless, and in due time, one in which we will all be able to savor.
10…and Then.
November 2nd, 2012 at 9:57 pm
Btw, please don’t assume that I was happy with last year’s offense that averaged 20+ points/ game because of the comparison.
Hue struggled to score and win when were competing for the division, but our defense was a mess and it didn’t help (Bills & Lions).
That’s why I said I didn’t care if he goes/ stays as long as we improve. Knapp is not improvement IMO.

some people make fun of me for talking about him too much, which at least has some basis in reality. it’s ok to make fun of me for it b/c i do actually spend too much time on him.
but for instance, just coming out and saying i’m a gay doctor blah blah blah, with no cleverness like dan78 does, is just dumb and worst of all, boring.

Streater is doing well for an URFA and Criner was injured and missed camp/ OTAs due to contract issues.

Exactly, when it’s obvious Mcfadden is just not the same player as he was last year and our receivers suck besides DHB and DMOORE , they think we should be top 10 o with that group and score 30 points a game , like seriously? just because we had success with change of scheme late in the game , doesn’t mean we can just change into that scheme and beat the crap out of our next opponent
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:09 pm

We have the same core of WRs, and we improved by adding 2 good rookies.
DHB had 60+ catches last year, he averaged 4+ catches/ game, and now he is averaging 2+ catches/ game. Is he dropping a ton of passes or less passes thrown his way?
—-
DUDE don’t just say anything to back up your arguement, J Criner has like 1 freaking reception the whole year, Streater is running wrong routes all the freaking times, Hagan is showing why he was cut by 4 teams in the past 2 years , DMac hits the wrong holes and when he gets in the openfield he goes down easily , so if you think with all that we can just change freaking schemes or change our OC and we will automatically start being the top 10 team then i guess the other 20 teams have probably have worse OC then ours
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
All that and you didn’t mention DHB’s decrease in production, and you didn’t answer my question.

If you get two minutes and you haven’t seen it check this video of branch out.
Near the end, someone asks him if it is different this year than in previous years.
What is interesting to me is that he doesn’t say something about how they have always tried hard or some thing that deflects the implication that things are better than they have been.
Instead, dude says things are better now. Stuff like that indicates buy in and trust in what is going on. Seems to me that da was a good choice in what he is building. Better than what has been going on because players know he has the full support of management.

Your own answer tells the whole story , he’s doing well for an URFA ? you go figure the #’s up if he’s doing well for an URFA , maybe he’s playing like a 4th or 5th round rookie if he’s doing well as an URFA,
Criner has been non-factor , HAGAN is playing like the player who was cut 4 times last few years, Moore is finally catching up and getting his legs under him after missing the preseason and first 2 games in the season , DHB doesn’t look the same after the hit , and Mcfadden is not the same either after the injury last year and you guys think we can just change a scheme and start clicking

Our receiving group sucks , we picked up Hagan late in the season , we have 2 rookies who probably know like 35% of the playbook , Moore missed the pre-season and first 2 games , DHB knocked out and is not doing anything since then and MCfadden is not the same , WHat else do you want me to say, this is the reason why we can’t put up more points , we left atleast 15 points on the board last game , DMoore dropped a TD in the EZ and also dropped a pass in the RZ that should have gave us the 1st down… unless those things improve too i don’t think just changing the OC at this time would make much of a difference
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:21 pm

He’s not getting open either , what more can i say , you’re saying a new O.co will some how make him get more open or something? We finally saw some success running the ball albeit it was late in the game but it was still positive and we finally saw our first great Pass blocking game from our O-line , n i think we’re making progress on O side , i think Streater and Criner are finally catching up in the passing game , and they’re getting more involved, we should be fine soon , just chill , i don’t think changing just schemes will work unless players start playing as well , i don’t buy players are not buying into the scheme cuz it wasn’t successful before its all bs, they’re just slow to pick up , so unless all players get on the page , i can’t just blame 1 guy , i’m going to blame O side for not scoring as many points as they should

The Whole O side means, Knapp , OL coach , OL, RB, WR, TE’s , I would leave out Palmer since he’s the only 1 doing anything positive but he also cost us the win with that int in atl game , so he’s part of the blame system, if we want to become a good Offensive team , then i think we have to do more than just 1 change
November 2nd, 2012 at 10:31 pm
You people have a lot of excuses for this offense
OL: starters are playing different positions in a different scheme (Why?)
RB: DMAC is not the same, and he is not good in the ZBS (but he had his best season when Cable was here implementing the ZBS) (why struggle with this offense?)
WRs: we have the same starters from last year DHB & Moore, but DHB’s production decreased by 50%. (why?)

For some reason not just punching it in , they can’t even sell a play action play down there, and even when they do sell it then players drop passes, or when we are in the between 10 and 20’s players are not executing , like last week Palmer threw a short pass to D’Moore and he dropped it and came 3rd down , Streater was suppose to cut the route but kept running and so had to settle for the FG, and then the D’Moore dropped pass in the Ez, we can’t just change OC and score more points if players are going to play like that

OL is playing different positions because they got no Depth to start someone in place of CC, who has to move over because a better player has taken over his spot at RG, then smith is whatever
RB. Just like i said it’s the combination of plays being called and run blocking along with DMC’s vision and going down easily
WR..Hard to target only 1 or 2 Wide Receivers we have when it’s going to obvious pass downs , everybody knows the ball is going to DHB or DMoore in passing downs

I laughed when you posted years ago how everyone was “jealous” of you. You posted how successful you were. Beautiful wife. Huge house. Then you stupidly posted a link to Kane. And posted a link with pictures.
And a few clicks later, from anyone, there is a very unflattering picture of your wife. There is info showing you have no business, and haven’t in a long time. And there is a picture of a small run down house, in a blight neighborhood, instead of that huge house you claimed.

We will have positive short term results setting the way for long term success.

your very different than some people in here , last time i had a different opinion on the same subject with somebody in here , the guy started calling me dumbass and other names, lol it was hilarious
But my believe is those #’s have lot more to do with the players as well then you think , i really see a short coming with our players, yes if Hue was here maybe things would have been different , but he’s not here , we can’t go by ifs and shoulda , coulda, woulda, but hey if we can find a better OC next year than I’m all for it , but i think this year it is a combination of everything from coaches to plays and players skills and execution , so i really don’t think changing schemes and changing plays is the only solution , players have to step up and make plays like that Moore Dropped TD in the end zone, he should of had that and he dropped another pass inside the 20 that would have given us 1st down , but it hey if knapp starts running “gap Schemes” and all of a sudden we’re opening huge lanes for Mcfadden and putting up more points on the board then all credit to you guys but till then i still believe the problem goes beyond just 1 person

November 2nd, 2012 at 11:01 pm
My point was that the mere inclusion of and subsequent increase of gap blocking scheme is evidence of DA/RM admitting that the ZBS/knapp was an error.
Remember, the initial criticism by the armchair GMs here was correct — we should not have totally replaced what worked last year on offense in favor of a) Knapp himself, and b) the ZBS.
That included a change with the OL coach to a ZBS specialist.
And includes that belligerent insistence from each of Reggie, Allen and Knapp that the ZBS was the way to go, that they would NOT change it, that the players had to just stfu and adapt to it.
Little by little, that veneer broke down, and I am sure that the players themselves, especially Palmer, have spent many hours breaking down film and complaining to Allen/Knapp that they need to change certain things, bring in more things.
Remember, even after week 1, there was the usual criticism of Knapp’s playcalling how it was the same iso, stretch, draw play type playcalling, or how in the passing game there wasn’t enough vertical routes and throwing. That’s Knapp’s vanilla sprayed on thick, as well as the WCO.
Bit by bit, the offense has improved as Palmer has got his way (imo) in forcing more change….more vertical throws, less rollouts, more gap blocking.
Noticed there are far less rollouts and more vertical routes/throws?
The next thing on the agenda is surely getting more creativity involved. More splitting out McFadden and Reece, more formations with say McFadden, Reece and Ausberry on the field together. More double/triple back looks with Schmitt, Reece, McFadden, or Jones and McFadden. More endarounds, some trick plays like endaround WR pass, more fake punts/FGs, more formation shifts after lining up at the LOS, etc.
Those things will evolve and we’ll see some little by little over the weeks.
November 2nd, 2012 at 11:02 pm
as i said, i’m pretty neutral regarding kell, but i don’t recall him saying anything offensive to me plus he’s anti-beeech so he gets a lot of credit for that with me. that alone shows sanity (and heterosexuality).

– I agree with some of the points but if your saying he should have started running gap schemes to tailor to Mcfadden’s strengths , then i think the blame should fall on DA , who hired a wrong OC , but then again to a naked eye , Mcfadden doesn’t look the same player and leaving some yards on the field by hitting the wrong holes, goes down easily , so i doubt if we ran the same scheme from last year, Mcfadden would have been the same player, on the other hand i think you guys expecting too much out of the passing game with 2 rookies and 1 street guy we picked off 2 games into the season , can’t really blame everything on OC, i mean heck if our team had HOF players on it and we were struggling to score , then i be with you guys calling for his head , but we have average O team and to put the blame for all that on 1 person is kinda insane i think

raiders will put up points this week, or at least tons of passing yardage. i susect streater, myers, and maybe even pryor will see red zone targets.
but the defense will be tested. the bucs run it well, and freeman is hot with two big receivers.
i have to say i’m a little worried. maybe i’m just too gunshy. if they win, it will not only be a move to 4-4 but a lot bigger win than might be obvious. it could be a sign that we’re on our way. but if we lose, it shows we’re not ready.
so this game is very big.

Guess it rubs me wrong when someone makes all these pat on his back claims, while insulting poster after poster for not having what he has, for his business acumen, when it turns out he doesn’t work. His wife works, while he blogs all day, all night, day after day. She works. He doesn’t, but he insults others on how they aren’t as successful at work as he is.

regarding beeech, yes i have gone after him repeatedly. his posts are inane. some of it could be kinda funny, but the reason i started fuking with him is because he’s on here all the time and tells us we’re all nerds and goobers, and tries to represent himself as being so much cooler than all of us, which is ridiculous cuz the dude apparently likes some of the most lame sh!t ever. it might be kinda genius if he really was in on the joke, and knew huey lewis, celine dion, madonna, etc. are so bad.
my biggest issue with him is that he is condescending and insulting, not nearly as funny as he thinks, and repetitive to the point of nausea. and very very gay.

GG Says:
-
Some coaches and players have pointed out before that sometimes it takes long time to learn ZBS, because they don’t usually get time to practice it with their teammates because of risk of injury .so that must be the case you know , but if we’re unwilling to give this scheme time after it has atleast averaged 24 points last 3 games , and asking them to change scheme and etc, because it doesn’t fit with the player personnel then the blame should fall on DA for making this hire , he should have hired a Power scheme guy or he was totally looking to concede this season and call it rebuilding year , but after all that it’s still the players who play the games, they still need to execute better, Mcfadden need to stay more patience and hit the open holes when they’re there

Exactly, well put.
And again, Greg Knapp will never be a great coordinator, or creative trendsetter type of OC. On this team or any other team.
And on this team, which is loaded with talent at various positions, this offense needs a coordinator who is either currently renowned or has proven to be a top OC with top 5 type offenses at other teams (like Saunders, say)….or, this offense needs some bright coach HC’ing or OC’ing in the NCAA, or currently working with another team as a position coach who around the NFL traps other organizations perceive as a potential great OC/HC.

Indeed it does. While it was necessary to remove Hue Jackson as HC, and there would’ve been no way to demote him to OC under Allen/Reggie….the Armchair GMs here have been right from the get-go that Allen erred in hiring Knapp, in torching what we had last year, and try to rebuild a ZBS-WCO offense, forcing players who fit into the vertical/power scheme as they were drafted to be, to try to fit into the bs ZBS/WCO let alone one run by Greg Knapp, that only has resulted in seeing all these talented players go backwards in productivity and miss out on pro-bowl possibilities, putting up big numbers, getting more national exposure, increasing their potential salaries. I’m sure player agents representing the likes of Pryor and Taiwan and Reece especially, have been snapping at Reggie this year via phone and email.
November 3rd, 2012 at 12:07 am
let’s talk objective reality for a minute. i’m as big a raider fan that has ever been but if i step back and really look honestly at this team, this is what i see:
qb: a good one. a bit reckless at times but he’s a very good qb. pryor is electric as an athlete but suspect as a qb.
rb: an angular, thin legged rb with great explosion, who may never be what he briefly was.
wr: a rising star, a hard working but somewhat limited 2nd receiver, and some slower, possession types. but right now, this crew is not making any defenses sweat. they just haven’t shown enuff big play consistency.
te: solid and good. potential to be casper/chester lite.
ol: some decent talent but not great. coming along a bit, but still not good on a regular basis. veldheer is still gonna be very good. wiz is too weak with a man on his nose. needs to play guard. the rest are average at best.
front 7: with mcclain almost eliminated, and real backers like wheeler and burris, these guys are doing well finally against the run. still lacking a fast rusher.
secondary: not bad for dealing with all the injuries and having so many guys getting more playing time than they probably deserve. in a few weeks, huff is better at cb than he ever has been at safety.
basically, this team has just enuff to maybe be in the playoff hunt if things go right. but we’re still a couple OL, more experience at wr, maybe a new RB, a rush end/LB, and a corner or two from being top flight.

i have said from the first game that he has looked a step slow even when he had that big run early in the season. just didn’t look like lightning. he looks tentative, a little afraid to keep running into people and taking big hits, and a tad slow when he’s in the open. i really feel like the first game messed him up. although, he didn’t exactly look great in preseason. running backs take a serious beating. they take more hits than anyone else on the field. and by multiple players many times. they get worn down physically pretty quick really.
November 3rd, 2012 at 12:09 am
Before the bye week Allen said they(he and his staff) were going to look at everything and make necessary changes. They obviously did that. Why does everyone believe Knapp wasn’t involved in helping make those changes? They seem to say the changes were forced upon him.I give the guy a little more credit than that.He has been in the league a long time and that wouldn’t have been possible if he was a rigid as everyone says.
November 3rd, 2012 at 12:09 am
#361…
It’s a good question. Because Pollack came with Knapp. That must’ve been something Allen worked on during the off-season to goad/interest Knapp to come here. Ie, he must’ve wanted him, and fairly early, to get Pollack (and Briesel) to come along.
But Allen probably did inquire for other possible OC’s. Wasn’t there someone else from another team they asked to interview but the team refused? Not sure.
But I am sure Allen erred because he went for the ZBS/WCO scheme over what already was in place ready to go, ready to take that next step.
Remember, too, Allen had Al Saunders there he could’ve hired as OC who would’ve continued to run the Air Coryell system in place.

forcing players who fit into the vertical/power scheme
================================================
We only went to the power scheme last year. Cable was a ZBS guy.
Khalif Barnes – signed in 2009 under Cable
Mike Brisiel – brought over from Texans (ZBS guy)
Wiz Jr – Only linemen brought on last year (draft)
Cooper Carlisle – came over from the Donks (ZBS guy)
Jared Veldheer – drafted during the Cable ZBS years
These guys are all built for a gap/power blocking scheme?
November 3rd, 2012 at 12:14 am
DA is a ZBS guy too. I don’t know what’s worse, the ZBS or Knapp’s Playcalling.
November 3rd, 2012 at 12:15 am
363-exactly.They aren’t running the system they prefer but they are bending to get results.Kind of the same thing Fox did last year in Denver-but not to the same extent.

I don’t know if its a matter of what they’re built for or what they’re good at..
November 3rd, 2012 at 12:17 am
What ever sinister lurkings occurred behind closed doors between Reggie, Allen, Knapp and Saunders (Saunders being the silent one), it is not for us to say. All we can do is observe that knapps zbs was hot garbage and Allen at this point was seeing the exit door. I give credit to Allen for sh1t-canning this ZBS thing before it is to late.
November 3rd, 2012 at 12:17 am
i’m not the knapp hater that many are. the zbs is a cutting edge system. it is to the run game what the wco was to the passing game for the first decade. pedestrian lines and rb’s have run wild in it. i think our poor pass protection shows that the line is weak, regardless of scheme. the zbs doesn’t cause palmer to have defenders in his face after two steps back. some of it learning the scheme, sure. veldheer was really good and has not excelled yet with it. but wiz isn’t a center. hue knew that last year when he moved him a couple weeks into camp and brought back satele, who we knew sucked. moving wiz back to center was a mistake. he’s better going to get people than taking big guys on right off the snap. carlisle is ok but not what he once was. brisiel was supposedly pretty good at houston but he gets blown up a lot. barnes is ok when he’s healthy. big willie is showing that he’s really more of a decent backup.
it’s just not a good line. only two keepers. but i think bergstrom will be a solid guy on the right side either this year or next. and nix might pan out too.
November 3rd, 2012 at 12:20 am
It is possible the organization didn’t believe this team could take the next step, ergo the total change. It is possible they believed it had maxed out and it wouldn’t be good enough to make that next step. After all, they did coach against us last year.
November 3rd, 2012 at 12:20 am
i think people on here are getting false hope based on the 2nd half last week. i think we will be right back to a poor running game this week cuz of tb’s good run defense. but we will pass all day. i hope palmer throws it 50 times.

Well, that I can accept. I just question the notion that these players “fit” into a power/gap scheme over a ZBS. If anything, they seem to fit a ZBS, just that they stink at it right now. Not sure why they had to force feed the ZBS instead of easing it in.

ZBS = 0.
It’s like a new day. There is hope. There is hope DA really is a bright guy. He was able to see the errors of his ways, put his ego aside, and is throwing the zbs scheme in the trash. knapp nutt huggers and apologists have no need to feel bad about this. This is just good business. DA saw that his job was on the line, so he had to make the only move he could. A smart choice.

reggie is not the type to think he is gonna come in here, change some stuff, and go to the super bowl. he knows it’s a multi-step process. he knew there was some chance we could improve enuff to get to the playoffs, but bigger changes are coming.
these players are the only sure-fire returnees next season:
palmer
goodson
reece
moore
ford
streeter
myers
ausberry
gordon
veldheer
wiz
bergstrom
bryant
bilukidi

It is possible the organization didn’t believe this team could take the next step, ergo the total change. It is possible they believed it had maxed out and it wouldn’t be good enough to make that next step. After all, they did coach against us last year.
=========================================
Good point, Left, but I think Reg and DA truly believe in the ZBS. You heard Reggie say that DA believed in all the same things he did where it comes to building a successful football team. I think the ZBS is one of these things both of these men believe in. Look at where Reggie comes from. No big name backs. I think it’s a smart way to go if you can pull it off. The Donks plugged in all sorts of no names at RB and made that thing work.

our line sucks! the only reason we get any offense at all is b/c palmer is playing fantastic. consistently has to throw from his back foot. finding open receivers in a split second. if it weren’t for him, our offense would be non-existent.

that and the ridiculous notion, regardless of what every player and coach continues to say, that the zbs is gone. they have said from day one that multiple schemes were being used. that may actually be the problem. veldheer, wiz, and big willie are all having to change up their blocking style repeatedly. not easy to excel when ur thinking too much. but the zbs, as a scheme, has proven to be really good. it’s a s stupid as seeing a team struggle with the wco, and saying “dumpo the wco, it sucks!”
i’m not in love with some of knapp’s play calls. that’s for sure. but the line sucks. plain and simple.
November 3rd, 2012 at 12:33 am
TSR,I agree they’d rather run that system.Eventually they will.I also agree it will take time and it should have been implemented a little slower, and not at once while totally abandoning what was fairly successful before. If the plan was to use both, they should have started with the old while working on the new.

Wow.
Maybe Reggie and Allen wanted to make our Raiders be a little GB and a little Denver. So they started to make and ugly concoction with the zbs as the main ingredient. Well, it backfired. We are not GB nor anything like Denver, so now Reggie and Allen see that and hopefully the Raider brand of football will emerge.
We are not meant to be another one of 32 vanilla teams. We are the Silver and Black. The sooner Reggie and Allen get with it, the sooner we go deep into the playoffs.
Bey hey, sh1t canning the ZBS is a good start.

a lot of the palmer hate comes from sullivan (trouble maker), mistic (hates white people), and some fans who don’t know who else to blame.
anyone who knows football was happy to have palmer come here, and can see that he is playing really well. he’s a little reckless sometimes but i wish we could see him with a good line and proven receivers. with time to look around, he could start putting up monstrous numbers.
one glaring problem is the red zone though. it’s not palmer’s fault. moore is finding ways to get in but he really has to score by running it in. he’s not the ideal guy to find space in the end zone and have him score as he catches it. dhb simply doesn’t have the hands to go up and get it. streeter and criner have been getting some looks b/c of their hands/size but they are limited in their separation ability and overall athleticism. same can be said for myers.
i would like to see ausberry and maybe pryor used in the red zone. the combination of size, athleitc ability, and in ausberry’s case, hands, would seem to make them ideal.

When you fail at punching it in from the 1 more times than you score, some thing is very wrong with the system. And it is not the players. Teams are tipped off by the predictability of the OC and the formations tip it off. It is NOT on the players.
It is about effin time DA and Reggie wised up I will give them credit for that. They are so PC that it makes sense knapp would come out and say they’re going to throw some change ups in there. But read between the lines. The ZBS will be toast very soon, if not by Sunday.

i disagree. it’s on the players. the zbs is a great system. and our line sucks at pass protection too, which proves they suck all around. no possibility they overhaul the scheme midseason. it wouldn’t change anything anyway. watch this sunday when we can barely rush for 60 yards. admitting it’s the players sucks for fans cuz it means we’re stuck this year with what we have, but that’s the straight dope. but fear not. we will pass for over 400 yards sunday. and the defense, minus mcclain, is now looking pretty stout.

Have you seen this team play the last 10 years. We couldn’t punch it in from the 1 or 2 yard line against a good college team.Isn’t that what everyone complained about with Bush-he was soft and not a great short yardage back?He is doing fine in that role in Chicago.

November 3rd, 2012 at 12:49 am
what do we have on the o-line that anyone else would want?
veldheer? yes, everyone would take him
wiz? well, yes they would take him, but he would play guard.
carlisle? no, not as a starter. i have always liked him but he is slipping.
brisiel? a backup for most at this point. his play hasn’t made him more desirable, that’s for sure.
barnes? most would take him as a backup.
big willie? a backup for some teams but not all would take him.
now look at those assessments. am i wrong? not exactly a recipe for a good running game is it?
now what about dmc? sure, most teams would take him for free. just to see what he had. but what kinda draft pick could we get for him right now? maybe a 3rd.

I think DHB *could* be that guy but agree that he’s not that guy right now. It’s fun watching him when he gets a mean streak. Just wish he could maintain that level of intensity.
I wouldn’t close the book on Criner in that role just yet. I don’t think they’re comfortable with him at this stage, but he still has a chance to be this guy. Still green.
Streeter has unfortunately been inconsistent, and on thing we do know is The DA hates inconsistency. We see what he’s capable of when he is on though. He can make those tough catches, no doubt.
Lots of ‘if’s and ‘could’s, I know, but that was just to say that we have some guys that may step into that role as they get more comfortable.

yeah–rookie receivers are usually inconsistent at best. very hard to make a splash early. criner and streeter are nice players. i’ve been impressed with their hands and routes. but it will take time. i like dhb. i’m rooting for him. and i love what he can do after the catch when he gets going. but it’s hard to “learn” good hands. moore is emerging. he’s just smallish, and has some limitations because of it, but he’s definitely good. but it’s just not a corp of receivers that has it all together right now. in time perhaps.

LOS ANGELES — USC coach Lane Kiffin feels he’s largely responsible for his Trojans’ unexpected 6-2 start to the 2012 season.
In a Friday interview on ESPN Radio’s The Herd with host Colin Cowherd, Kiffin said he deserved “a lot” of the blame for his team’s two losses and lack of discipline this season.
USC, which started the season as the No. 1-ranked team in the country, leads the FBS in penalties with more than 10 per game. The Trojans (No. 17 BCS, No. 18 AP) are now heavy underdogs at home against Oregon (No. 4 BCS, No. 2 AP) on Saturday night.
“That’s the head coach’s job,” Kiffin said when asked about taking responsibility for the losses. “If you’re gonna have penalties and turnovers like this, it should always go on the head coach.”
Kiffin also said he feels bad for his quarterback, senior Matt Barkley, who passed up being selected in the first round of the NFL draft to chase “unfinished business” this season.
Kiffin said quarterbacks get too much of the credit when teams exceed expectations and too much of the blame when they fail to reach them.
USC’s second loss, last weekend to Arizona, could have been prevented in a “million different ways,” Kiffin has said multiple times this week. And he’s continued to relive it while preparing for Oregon.
“It’s been a hard week,” Kiffin told Cowherd.
Kiffin relayed a story in which he walked by a television at halftime of the Los Angeles Lakers’ opening-night loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday. He said he heard announcers calling for Lakers coach Mike Brown’s job at the half, even though the Lakers were down just two points and only “1/164th” done with the regular season.
“That’s L.A.,” Kiffin said, laughing. “It comes with the territory.
“That’s where we’re at, and it’s a great place to be.”

Only idiots were saying that. Bush was by far one of the best second RBs in the league. Considering what happened to him shortly before the draft, that guy has done nothing but outperform expectations.
Letting him walk was one of the few disappointing personnel moves with the new regime so far IMO. But I also understand they have an eye toward future cap space and it just wasn’t feasible based on what he wanted. They’re paying Goodson ($2.5 mill) about 1/6th of what Bush got in Chicago ($14 mill) for the next four years.
November 3rd, 2012 at 8:08 am
GG its hard to argue with that. I am hoping that a strong head coach will overcome Knapps faults by doing such things as forcing Knapp to alter his hard stance.
There are also friends so I hope once again (what can I say, Im a fan) that their relationship will make Knapps acceptance that his way is the right way easier to accept.
Perhaps Knapp himself will see the change that has improved the team, become filled with pride for himself, the team and his friend, coach leader making for an even stronger bond
Otherwise the DA will send him away with an even lousier record and fewer chances as old age and incompetence take their toil.

Because DA has made changes, bringing in power and vertical, things that are working, as opposed to things knapp brought in which werent working.

The coach and one player say we are using GAP because our offense is strugling with the ZBS, and Chico (JFB) is trying to convince us it’s all part of the plan.
The plan was to suck at the ZBS and then branch off to gap to save our season?
You People………..

Why did it take the coaching staff this long to figure out ZB’s and McFadden running style don’t go we’ll together, total fail. Unprepared coaches with huge egos, I’m talking about Knapp’s sorry ass. I’m not impressed by this two wins over sorry ass teams , were having huge issues running the ball and scoring in the red zone, this has been covered up by superb defensive play, against inferior opponents. If the offense dosent improve there is no way we can hang with legit teams like Denver, this Tampa team may be a good test, but they gave been awful on the road.

Where is this “vertical” working?
Have we even completed 2 passes thrown deep down the field?
I saw a lot of dink and dunk working last weekend. The short pass to Moore that went for 58 yards, the catch and run with DHB, the swing passes to Goodson.

Fire Knapp and bring back Hue Jackson to be OC.

Chico,
Continuing the Reggie topic:
Reggie did well drafting Burris and signing Wheeler. Dude was a steal at vet min. Great job.
We should have done more to improve our secondary (our FS is playing CB for a reason) and pass rush.
His 1st pick is a 26 YO rookie OT/ OG who is inactive on gameday.
Our punter has a $5.65 million cap hit.

If knapp hasn’t got fired by the end of the season it’s because Palmer has got the green light to call the offense as he see’s fit. Palmer will never throw knapp under the bus, so instead he give credit to knapp for the offense success. Just like it dosent matter who the OC for manning is because he calls his own plays, the OC is only there to come up with a successfully scheme against that weeks opponent.

We should all send letters to Gregg Knapp thanking him for making the proper adjustments to get the offense going. Tell him we appreciate his “genius” in being able to “adjust” a scheme in midseason, etc. etc. etc.
That way he’ll swell up with pride like u say and wanna go full bore with what works.
Yes…thank you Mr. Knapp. Let’s do it.

So this change to “more” gap-schemes could amount to about 2 plays a half.

Did you forget all the games pre-bye? We called almost exclusively typical Knapp WCO pass plays, all horizontal short stuff. Did you forget the amount of designed QB rollouts? Since the bye week there have been more vertical routes, vertical doesnt mean just deep bombs. And there have been far less rollouts.
November 3rd, 2012 at 8:56 am
I think Smith is a better pass rusher and his numbers prove it.
More sacks than Miller this year and last year, and he didn’t even start last year and had less snaps than Miller.

Good post, and imo spot on, if you read between the lines of several Knapp interviews pre-bye and immediately post-bye. He went from being belligerently pro-ZBS, that it wont change, that the players are to blame (protecting his own job by throwing them under the bus), and that they will continue to insist on the ZBS. Then post-bye, much changed, as we now know with more gap and vertical, more Palmer no-huddle in the 2nd half after Knapp’s first half couldn’t do anything…almost like DA is giving a half each to Knapp and a half to Palmer…and Knapp’s interviews post-bye have altered to how he’s all okay with asking the players what works for them, trying to find ways to use the players to their strengths rather than belligerently trying to force them to fit the pre-bye scheme.
November 3rd, 2012 at 9:13 am
4-4 is close guys…I can’t wait for the game.
The Bucs are a tough opponent and very underrated, they probably should have beaten the NYG, Redskins and Saints and are averaging 34 ppg and 460 total yards over their last 3 games, losing All-Pro Nicks is a blow but Schiano seems to have these guys ready to play every game, I’m sure tomorrow won’t be the exception.
All things considered, beating a hot Tampa team coming well rested and prepared would top the Pitt win as the most impressive of the season for me.

Again, to repeat myself…
Whilst Knapp has been in the NFL for decades and worked under many fantastic people, etc, he is just not a good OC. He’s below-average. He doesn’t have the creativity, doesn’t have the nous of play-calling, doesn’t come in tailoring a scheme that suits the talent, but tries to fit them into his scheme, until the HC, GM, force him to change, force him out of play-calling duties, and ultimately scale him back or fire or release him end of the year. To argue that Knapp per se is a good OC is the contention. Whatever he’s brought in, whatever influence he has, it is below-average, frustratingly impotent like a butter-knife, boring, conservative, not imaginative, and very slow to change, by week 8 still trying to make his system work at whatever team he’s with, that team suffering very poor offensive statistics. There’s always some other person having to be brought in to help him, to work alongside him to implement other things, change things, call the plays instead of him, etc. A good QB coach, yes. A good OC, no, and never will be. He isn’t a long-term prospect here under DA/RM. This team needs far more explosive imaginative OC’ing and play-calling.

Are there other blogs or forums that the coaches/players may read or is this the “big” one?

November 3rd, 2012 at 9:38 am
Since he got hired, there were many radio shows, blogs, forums criticizing the hire, dreading, fearing, expecting. And those fears and expectations have been verified by Knapp’s errors thru the pre-bye stages.
And from week 1 to 2 to 3, etc, as radio hosts, blogsters, and analysts studied the Raiders offense, the anti-Knappism has grown across the local and national media.
Since the bye week, things have been improved and Knapp isn’t so directly in the hot-seat, and the team-talk to the media has been about praising Knapp….but, read between the lines…the very surge to make changes, changes away from Knapp’s schemes and play-calling, is proof itself that internally, among the players/coaches/GM, it’s acknowledgment of Knapp’s failings as an OC commander. No longer a commander of the offense.
That’s me reading between the lines, btw.

It is going to be the most ridiculous thing ever.
==================================================
If we’re still running 85% ZBS, it’s far more likely that the offense and running game will continue to languish and then you’ll just predict that we’ll hang 50 on next week’s opponent.
BTW, I’m getting a kick out of your ’scoring is only down by 2 pts’ mantra.
To start with, considering that the average NFL team scored 22 pts per game last year – a 2 pt per game drop would NOT be insignificant. In a league where parity is so widespread, a 10% reduction in scoring can easily be the difference between winning and losing, the playoffs or sitting at home.
Besides, it’s NOT just the regression in scoring that’s an indictment of Krapp.
We’ve been absolutely horrific at converting 3rd downs and the running game has been a complete joke.
So if we DON’T hang 40 on TB tmw, I’ll still be looking forward to the JFB spin.
Always enjoy your posts even when I disagree with them.

KL: You already have a head start when comparing to last year. Now do you feel “I can fine tune the player I am” because I imagine last year you felt like you were playing catch up?
CP: This has been offense. It’s a brand new offense. Everything is different. The run game is different, the terminology is different, routes are completely different, there’s really not anything that kind of carries over from last year so it’s a whole new learning process for all of us on offense. It’s been great to study it together, and watch it on film and really watch the success of the Houston Texans — where [offensive coordinator Greg] Knapp came from. And to just see for myself — see guys wide open, running certain routes, see a defense’s confusion on film. It’s been really good for us as an offensive group to really study the Houston Texans and see how these things can correlate to what we have personnel-wise on offense.

Just another post I found. Reminds me of all the planning that goes on
KL: Knowing last year that one of your reflections was wishing you had more 1-on-1 time with [former coach] Hue Jackson, how would you describe your relationship with Coach Knapp?
CP: Very personal. He’s in every single meeting. He runs the offense meetings, he does the install, he’s in on the QB meetings. We meet very often, and really get the chance to get to know him as a play-caller, get to know him as a coach and get to know him on a personal level. But also get to know why he likes certain plays in certain situations, in certain field positions, in certain points of game, certain downs and distances, so that as you are on the field and plays are being called, you kind of have a little bit of a hint with things you have learned in the offseason with things he likes to do in different situations.

KL: When you talk about the health of this team, I’ve got to imagine there’s a big sigh of relief when you see (Darren) McFadden out on the field. What kind of excitement does he bring to you when you think about how dynamic this offense can be with him healthy?
CP: Yeah, this offense can be really difficult to stop and difficult to prepare for. Obviously he can run the ball really well, everybody knows that. But if we had to, we can line him up at receiver and play a game with him at receiver. He understands the game so well. He understands zone, and man-reads and running routes. He catches the ball as good as any receiver and seeing what he can do in the screen game is really going to take his game to the next level because he is so explosive with the ball in his hands. If we can get him space between himself and the next defender and have an offensive line pulling out in the screen, he’s the type of guy that can score from anywhere on the field.
KL: What are fans going to see of this new regime?
CP: A disciplined football team that plays hard through the whistle, that understands their assignments and is willing to do whatever it takes to win. That’s something Coach Allen has come in and preached. The first thing he talked about is we’re going to be a disciplined football team and discipline sets you up for so many positive things down the line — but first and foremost disciplined team.

DJ, I’m not so sure we’ve seen the last of Gruden as a coach.
I really enjoy his work as an announcer and his ‘QB Camp’ shows. I’d like to see him continue on in that role.
I think he’d be silly to give up the ‘easy’ money he rakes in with his current gig.
But, I get the feeling he still wants to coach.
If he does go back to coaching, he should go college.
I think he was a fine NFL coach – but I think his real calling would be coaching at the collegiate level.
Get the feeling he would be a masterful recruiter and could really energize a program. Seems to interact very well with young, developing players.
Tennessee could be a good fit.

Carl Nicks is the best guard in the league. Doug Martin has had almost 60 percent of his rushes behind Carl Nicks. Carl Nicks is out for the season. Heres what I was looking for. Knapp said this back when he was hired
Knapp listed three ways we’ll know if his game plan is working.
“One, if we are not having negative running plays,”
“Two, if we’re not in third-and-long situations.
“Three, if we’re getting explosive passing gains — and the barometer we use for that is 16 yards or more.”

But anyway, are we gonna come out tommorrow and win a game we should win, or is it gonna be more of the same?

wow just checked the stats we’re only scoring 2.5 less points per game than last year and some how you guys are tripping like our O was offensive Juggernaut last year, and over the last 3 games we’re averaging 24 PPG (with 15 points left on board in our last game ) which is 2 more than we averaged last year, i don’t get what all the fuss is about , we’re getting better and i think we will consistently average in high 20s- low 30s rest of the year

Even with so called knapps Bs ZBS scheme and play calls , i think we’re just a play here or play there made by players away from averaging in high 20s – low 30s not bad for some one who’s called the worst OC in the league

We’re not putting ourselves in manageable 3rd down situations , we been going incomplete and short 2 yard gain on 2nd down or vice versa and comes 3rd and 8 or longer and with this OL (save for the last game) and this set of receivers , we end up punting the ball on next down, just need to gain atleast 5 to 6 yards first 2 downs

November 3rd, 2012 at 11:24 am
We’re not putting ourselves in manageable 3rd down situations..
===========================================
Manageable 3rd down situations are irrelevant in a Krapp offense.
3rd and 3 just means a zone stretch run stuffed for no gain or a loss – or a pass in the flats for a gain of 2.

Thats true but how many times do we put ourselves in that situation like once or twice a game , the other times we’re trying to get 8 or more yards on 3rd down , which is hard to do , no matter which O it is ,
Your not always going to convert 3rd downs regardless of how many yards to go , but less yards you need to get a first down , the more success you have in 3rd downs, so can’t keep on trying to get first down from 3rd and 8 or longer

November 3rd, 2012 at 11:32 am
The key is not having to get to third down.
It goes like this:
1st down, 2nd down, 1st down, 2nd down, 1st down, 2nd down, 3rd down, 1st down, TOUCHDOWN.

Wisniewski said it was nothing but zone-blocking scheme from the outset, which made sense given that’s Knapp’s and offensive line coach Frank Pollack’s pedigree. However, the coaches aren’t so rigid that they are averse to change.
====================================================
Should have been gap blocking from the outset with the ZBS phased in – NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND
^^^^^^^

I’m not a big fan of Goodson but would like to see him get more carries.
I think it’s absurd that Taiwan has hadn’t a touch since week 1.
I’m amazed that TP hasn’t even been ACTIVATED for a single game.
Krapp will wear out DMAC. Krapp is an unimaginative tool that doesn’t make full use of the roster and weapons available to him.

RM99 & Twinkle,
Knapp’s system is his system. Allen didn’t bring him in to do the same exact things Hue Jackson & crew were doing. Allen wanted a ZBS/WCO. Knapp was the only available guy with experience to implement it. If you recall, by the time Reggie offered Dennis a contract all the good coordinators had signed on elsewhere. I remember that because we complained about it!
Knapp can’t be blamed every time McFadden fumbles, trips over his own feet or runs into the back of one of his linemen. He can’t be blamed for every bad route that’s ran or every dropped pass. He can’t be blamed every time Palmer gets sacked or throws an interception.
At some point, you have to hold the players accountable. I think it’s easy to pull some stats from NFL.com and say that we’re not as good offensively as we were a year ago … but a Semi Pro breaks down the film to see what the reasoning is behind it
It takes a while to digest a new offense for these players and I think as long as they learn from their mistakes and keep improving we’ll be a playoff team at reg season’s end. Did you see how the O-Line responded (against KC) after DA called then out in the JAX postgame presser? Knapp threw in some “gap scheme” and the players stepped it up. I think we’re closer than many Raider fans think.
McKenzie & Allen don’t seem like knee jerk reaction type of guys, like most of you people. Even if we fail to make the playoffs I think he’ll be retained and we’ll see dramatic improvement next year when Reggie can afford to gather more players that fit his system. The O-Line will gel eventually. I think it happens this week.

Rockstar those are pertinent points but I guess it falls at Reggie’s feet (as will everything in the long run) if
you try and change a culture as ingrained as ours and don’t succeed with quickness. It’s a hell of a hard sell
to get young Olinemen to see Upshaw Shell and Otto as dancers as they are being asked to be.If you aren’t asked to go out and plow someones arse then perhaps you are not seen in the same vein perhaps?
Do not expect a lot of success with this but on the plus side the reduction in penalties is mind boggling!
Something is getting through…..perhaps the sudden lack of job security.Wiz and Val D are not this type
and I believe the coach has to change the scenery to
fit his players talents…..Interesting to see how it plays out.

=============================================
So basically what you’ve just posted in the way of explaining your ’support’ of Krapp, is this:
All the good coordinators were already signed elsewhere.
Krapp shouldn’t be blamed for player mistakes.
It takes time to learn a new system.
Eventually we will see improvement.
Most of the above is true,(especially blaming Krapp for player mistakes) but not exactly what I was asking or looking for.
Doesn’t really get to the heart of the matter.
What aspects of Krapp’s coordinating do you think are very good ?
Does he scheme well ? Is he a good play caller ? Is he getting the most out of the talent available to him ? Is he maximizing production ? Do you find the Raid offense imaginative, innovative, exciting ? Do you think the Raids are doing a good job converting 3rd downs ? Do you think the Raids are efficient in the red zone ?
Sure, it’s easy to scapegoat Krapp and unfairly blame him for factors beyond his control.
But I think if you honestly answer the questions I posed above, you’d have respond with a resounding NO – and furthermore, it can’t all be attributed to player mistakes or personnel shortcomings.
Hey, we’re both Raider fans and hope for the best. I just can’t disregard what my eyes tell me when I watch the Raider offense, nor can I disregard the results.
I’m sorry, but I am not optimistic about this offense under the direction of Krapp. I don’t think it’s a kneejerk reaction either.
Frankly, unless the offense improves dramatically, the prospect of retaining Krapp past this season based on the belief that he just needs more time and better players is extremely disconcerting to me.
We can do better than Krapp.

Who would you like to see as the Raiders OC?
Not being sarcastic, just wondering.
I would like to pick up Chris Peterson.

Wow. Beeech, you apparently really get under this guy’s skin.

From Boise State? Why would he do that? He has a great job and isn’t going to leave for an OC job. He might get a head coaching job in the NFL someday.

The refs owe the Panthers a call after that one.

I know, Chris won’t leave until he wins the big one. But, if I could pick an OC for the Raiders thats who I’d want.

College refs are almost as crooked as NFL refs.Almost but not quite.

I vote for Jason Garret if he gets fired.

Your wasting your time 99.
There is no reason to support Knapp other than him being our OC. They believe Reggie and DA hired so he has to be the best option, and they choose to ignore history and the facts/ stats.
RR called the stats phony numbers.

On another note, Geno Smith is hot garbage!!

I’ll take Garrett as the new OC next year ahead of Krappy Knappy once he gets fired from Dallas.

Factually Reggie hired D.Allen.D.Allen hired Knapp not Reggie.Just saying.

I get a kick how some you think this team is on the verge of turning into something great, because they barely beat a crappy Jags and beat a VERY crappy Queefs team.
This team needs to beat the REAL contenders and score TD’s, convert on 3rd down and run way more power running plays and get DMC going before they turn anything around.
November 3rd, 2012 at 4:00 pm
Yeah yeah I know….look at the scoreboard but I still can’t come to terms with the chef’s record. They have more young talent (the D specifically} than a lot of other teams (it seems anyway).Job opening approaching?

==============================================
To be honest with you, I don’t know.
Peterson has done an impressive job at Boise, doubt he’s leaving unless it’s to be a HC in the NFL.
I see the Oregon offense putting up points like they’re going out of style, but I don’t know how that would translate in the NFL.
I’m not going to BS the board and claim I have a candidate in mind or know who is available. I don’t.
I just know I’m not satisfied with what I’ve seen from Krapp this year and I’m not impressed with his previous resume either. Really don’t know why DA hired him to begin with.
I do know I don’t like the ZBS, nor do I want to ‘model’ the Raid offense after Kubiak and the Texans.
I’d have been happier with a retread like Trestman or Saunders over Krapp.
If Norv gets canned, that’s another retread I’d prefer over GK.
I’d take Hue Jax as my OC over Krapp. In a heartbeat.
So while I can’t give you a concrete answer as to who I’d like to see as Raid OC, I can tell you that his name isn’t Gregry (no ‘O’) Krapp.

Not doubting you dude but why would Reggie let a first timer do the hiring?Did Al let Madden do that I wonder?
At the start I mean.

RM99 I agree…..we’ve always pounded the ball and the few linemen here only know that role….Hard to imagine
Wiz and VD embracing ZBS.Never mind CP DMac and WR’s.
Get a rocket arm and go all Gannon….doesn’t make sense
to me but I’m no coach.
I loved Huejax’s playcalling.Kept everyone’s head in the game.

Hue’s play calling was spectacular overall.
If Knapp is fired after this season, then I hope they look at hiring Jason Garrett or Mark Trestman as OC.
