Curry not activated to 53-man roster

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, November 3rd, 2012 at 3:40 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders linebacker Aaron Curry Tweeted that he wasn’t activated today, which means that he won’t play Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Raiders have three more days to decide how to proceed.
Curry returned from the physically unable to perform list Oct. 17. That started a 21-day clock in which the Raiders can activate Curry at any point or wait until the evaluation period ends before placing him on season-ending injured reserve or waiving him outright.
Given the Raiders are paying Curry this season, one way or the other, it would seem to make the most sense to activate him and use him on special teams and as a backup, at least.
However, it’s possible that the Raiders are content with the players they have on their 53-man roster right now and don’t want to cut a player to make room for Curry.
The Raiders have to make a move before Wednesday, so time is running out.

People just assume because Reggie comes well regarded that this will be easy. Evaluating talent is one thing getting them to perform on Sunday’s is a very different story. Attrition the NFL grind is brutal to young talented players. Nothing against Reggie but there are tons of great evaluators with rosters filled with talented players with 1-6 records. Ask The KC Chiefs and SD Chargers.

We’ve had great rosters in the past that didn’t perform and so have many other teams. Look at the Dallas Cowboys and Philly Eagles….this is the NFL and soon Reggie and everybody else will figure that out. Injuries and Luck play a part in who wins in the end.

reggie is a very good evaluator of talent. he will stock the roster over time with good players. like 53 good ones.
    *******************************************
Really!! Then why didn’t he do that for the GB Packers they could use 53 good ones….
    *************

so………….ur telling me the packers aren’t and haven’t been any good?

i think they were pretty good when reggie was there.

  • Priesttj12

That QB and WR corp won that SB along with DB named Charles Woodson.

  • Priesttj12

The Packers defense is garbage….and has been.

Why couldn’t Reggie find a HB worth a damn in 10 years.

  • dr_robert

priest—it’s a fine line in the nfl. some of those “talented” rosters weren’t actually that talented. look at mcclain for example number 1. russell for example number 2. skills yes. ability to make it in the nfl? nope. reggie has already found a gem in burris. and guys like bergstrom, bilukidi, crawford, nix, streeter, and criner who all look like keepers. and that’s in a draft where we weren’t loaded with picks.

he brought in wheeler, a great addition. and lee has played ok too.

so far he has done very well bringing in under-the-radar guys who have turned out to be good players.

and DA is a good coach and will be very successful. after a good draft and a few FA’s, the team will be playoff caliber finally.

  • Priesttj12

I’ll give Reggie the benefit of the doubt until I see different but I aint all that crazy about last years draft to be honest.

  • dr_robert

priest–ur telling me 5 or 6 players won the super bowl? well, that’s just dumb. but still he was involved getting those 5 or 6 now wasn’t he? no good rb? how about ryan grant? he was a nice back until he was injured. and ahman green had over 1000 yards in 6 out of 7 years including a year with over 1800. u really aren’t getting anywhere dissing reggie’s packers. there’s a really good reason he’s so highly regarded as a talent evaluator.

  • dr_robert

priest—we didn’t have a #1 or a #2. none of the guys 3rd round or lower are supposed to start in year 1. burris was a steal. the other guys have been impressive enough to think they could start next year or be in the rotation. bergstrom will likely start. i bilukidi and crawford will be in the rotation. nix might stick around. and streeter and criner look like pretty good players too. this draft won’t show how good it was until another year or two.

I understand trying to downplay how bad the Raiders have been since the Super Bowl against the Bucs…but proving the point with “what teams have been to the SB since then?” doen’t seem to work. You should go with “who has been to the conference title game, the playoffs, or even gone at least 9-7?” That is a more accurate gauge.

The Raiders are the equivalent to the Pittsburgh Pirates–been irrelevant longer than most teams in their respective leagues, save a couple seasons with playoffs hopes that were dashed with a fade in the end. My brother is a Patriots fan, and is disgusted with their 5-3 record—and we have some people hyped to be 3-4 and in second place.

Thats where the Raiders are at for now. But i think we’re heading in the right direction. This does not make me happier, or keeps me from being blinded to everything but fandom during every Raider game (resulting in partial strokes ever week). Its just trying to keep perspective.

Your brother is disappointed because his team has been to 5 SB’s in last 10 years , and we’re happy because we’re seeing thing that we have not done in last 10 years , you get the point? we will be better than all the teams , Pats just got lucky with that BS tuck call which started their little run, but we will take our rightful place where we belong, we’re smart , and rebellious , we’ll never settle with disappointment,

Right now I’ll be happy if we can get to 9-7. Which sadly will be better than anything we’ve had in these parts since 2002-a decade ago.
IF we can win this game we will be that much closer to 9-7 than we’ve been in a while. This defense is much improved! Getting better than last year for sure and competing with any Defense we’ve had here for 10 years.

Reggie has made some good moves on D for sure, I am still waiting to see if his moves on Offense pan out. The trade for Goodson was a good move and bringing back Hagan I think was good.
But the impact on offense has not been as great as on Defense so far. Maybe Bergstrom will come on strong next year or later in the year. And maybe with some higher-round picks he can make some good move on O

I just hate how all these players that Al loved and took care of turned their backs as soon as he passed. I understand that the NFL career isn’t very long and that they need to make money while they can, but with Routt it especially seemed to be a d!ck move.

  • papertiger418

Reggie may not strike cleanly on all his draft picks or FA signings, but I like that the guys he targets are professionals who give effort and love football. That alone means that the hits are keepers who will add to the core of the team and determine its personality in the long term.

I have no problem with Reggie and what he’s doing. His main role is to improve the roster and he’s largely done fine with it. The ONLY thing I worry about is Pryor not getting a legitimate chance and getting released/traded. I just hope Reggie/DA persevere with him. And that he gets activated and plays some drives. That falls more on Knapp/DA, which is where my only gripe with this new regime is — the offense specifically, lack of creative uses of the talent we have, forcing a system from the start etc.

Oakland Raiders adding a little diversity to the running game

    By Jerry McDonald

ALAMEDA — From the beginning of the Dennis Allen era, the Raiders promised to be multiple on defense. They would mix in zone with man-to-man, and occasionally change between 4-3 and 3-4 and use the blitz.

Offense, and the running game in particular, was a different story. The Raiders were going back to the zone scheme fulltime, a system they ran with Tom Cable from 2007 through 2009.

During the bye week, with a stalled running game and a 1-4 record, Allen and offensive coordinator Greg Knapp came to the same conclusion that Hue Jackson did when he was handed the keys to the offense by Al Davis as offensive coordinator in 2010: The running game would be better suited with more diversity in terms of blocking.

It was one of the first things Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano noticed when comparing the pre-bye and post-bye Raiders on film.

“They added a little bit in the run game, they started running some more gap scheme stuff,” Schiano told Bay Area reporters by conference call.

Given that Knapp has a longstanding belief in the zone scheme, chances are the change was made reluctantly, although out of necessity.

Knapp worked with Alex Gibbs, the guru of the zone system, in Atlanta. Purists of the zone blocking system — and that includes Cable — don’t believe in deviation. Rather than fire off at a specific defender, zone runs call for more lateral movement and the clearing of an area. It takes time to perfect and execute.

    Running
backs hesitate only long enough to take one cut and head upfield when they find a lane.

During training camp, line coach Frank Pollack, brought in by Knapp to install the scheme said, “If you just dabble in it, you won’t be able to take it to the next level without having mass chaos.”

Fast-forward to the fourth quarter of the Raiders’ 26-16 win over Kansas City. They rushed for 95 yards on 20 carries with a mixture of zone and more straight-ahead gap runs.

“We definitely increased our gap run blocking scheme to get a better balance and keep defenses honest, and we’ve done it well, so we’ll keep that same kind of formula working,” Knapp said. “It’s a good change-up.”

Center Stefen Wisniewski can see where immersing the offense in the zone scheme before blending it with gap blocking was of some benefit.

“It makes a lot of sense. That’s where our coaches came from and that’s their mindset,” Wisniewski said. “Coming in was zone, zone, zone, zone. But I think they’re starting to get to know us better and we’re getting to know them and so they’re seeing we can be successful doing both.”

Knapp said outside zone plays accounted for much of the fourth-quarter yardage, and his hope against Tampa Bay is to get the steady gains going earlier.

“I would like to have a little more consistency on the three- to six-yard gains throughout the half,” Knapp said. “But I was glad the guys stayed patient up front. I kept reminding them, ‘Hey, we’re going to stay with this. The score says it’s OK. We’re going to stay patient with our game.”

    —-

I meant more big picture. If Pryor gets released without getting a concerted chance on the field, that would be a real shame. Naturally, that sentiment comes from purely a fan pov. I’ve always liked Pryor, and glad Al drafted him, etc. I know he needs time to develop. My wish is, he gets time to develop, Reggie/DA believe in him, he gets re-signed, keeps learning under Palmer, moves ahead of Leinart, and thus active, and thus does get game-planned into every week’s games.

  • lefty12

If Pryor gets released it will be because they don’t think he will ever be a pro QB.The fact they signed a QB to the practice squad has to make you wonder if they aren’t already leaning in that direction.

  • mcfadden20.

Pryor still got 1 more year if he’s good and he proves to the team that they should use him the team will use him, but if he’s still on the bench at this point is not being activated then I think the coaching staff does not have confidence in him , but we still got another year of Pryor to see what he got , if he’s improves, he will force the coaching staffs hand, if he still doesn’t get playing time next year then it’s anybody’s guess why he didn’t

From a football operational pov, I understand that Lefty12. I’m just talking on that particular point purely from a ‘fan of a particular player’ pov. If RM/DA end up thinking he isn’t good, I can appreciate that from a football operations pov.

But I wouldn’t necessarily agree with their assessment either — until I see how he does at another team, with different GM/Coaches, if he can move up the depth chart or not. If he doesn’t it specifically means he hasn’t learned the playbook well enough, doesn’t have all the nuances of every play memorized, can’t command a huddle without that foundation. If he can rise up the depth chart, it specifically means he has learned enough to be trusted to play in live games, still being slowly developed by the OC, feeding him more little by little over time.

Then it would be a matter of seeing how he actually performs on the field.

Sometimes talent evaluators/coaches aren’t ballsy enough to try, sometimes they get it wrong, sometimes there’s an agenda, sometimes the player is just stuck behind a too good or a too relied upon starter/back-up. Sometimes they’re 100% right and players fade away into obscurity from one team to another never getting a chance.

I still think Colt Brennan would’ve made a good QB if he got given the opportunity in Washington. But he’s also an example of that. QBs like him and Stanzi had talent/nous. Brennan floundered, team to team, ended up out of the NFL after a car crash too. Stanzi is headed in the same direction, he’s taken a backward cycle at the Chiefs, couldn’t beat out Quinn, must mean he hasn’t learned playbook and nuances well enough. Which is a poor sign. He could also end up floundering at another team.

they didn’t sign the qb, they just worked him out. i think it might have to do with prior being used in red zone situations as a receiver. that would mean they would think of bringing in another qb just in case prior would get injured.

    Mr Green
This looks like one of those classic ink blot test patterns.
Some of the bloggers here should take the test and report back on their findings.

** When a #3 QB doesn’t rise up the depth chart is specifically one reason — hasn’t learned the playbook, offense, nuances of well enough: both for calling plays in the huddle, and the whole pre-snap process of knowing where everyone is meant to line up, identifying out of position receivers/RBs, being able to call out the protections, able to read the coverage pre-snap, identifying blitzes and hot-reads, able to either know the called play is good against that D, or not, and whether to stay with the play or audible out of it to a better play.

That’s all why one doesn’t rise up the chart.

Everything that happens post-snap is more about actual ability playing the position. Can they then go thru their progressions, get the ball out in time, make accurate throws, identify coverages as the play happens. Also every play has a bunch of nuances in it. For instance, a particular pass play might call on the QB to identify if the Safety is playing 10 yards back or 15 yards back, and if so or not, the play might require the QB to specifically pump fake to the Split-End (the first read) before throwing to the Flanker or Tight-End (the designated receiver). Etc.

So there’s that side of knowing the nuances of the playbook too. Why early on developing young QBs, you often see OC’s giving them simpler one-read plays, or focusing on one side of the field more, more vanilla plays, or running plays they’re accustomed to in college (Newton/RGIII). And over the next year or two it’s up to the OC, QB coach and player whether he can absorb and excel in more of the playbook to allow the OC to be able to call a more diverse and complicated game-plan.

Terrelle has the best and the worst gig in the NFL.He sits squarely behind 2 Pac 10 Heismans meaning he’ll
play only in the case of two bad injuries in front of him.Smart money would take whatever the team offers and learn the fine art of clipboard carrying a la Gary
Kubiak. He of the cleanest uni in NFL history.CP is a
tough SOB and were he to go down Leinart would take to this O like a duck to water…..probably better than CP
cos he’s not saddled with the long ball option…..
Gannon with an arm if you like.STFU long enough and
Terrelle will be a head coach somewhere and still able
    to walk to boot.

    simple = pryor=dumb baboon = goodbye

  • Twinkle

Watch P.Manning and then watch T.Pryor……one dictates
what the defense is going to do pre snap the other is trying to figure out where they are after the snap.

Aren’t you just a sweetheart Fang?Apparently not as simple as you think.Baboons are not dumb. They constantly
chatter all day long….Terrelle obviously has no Baboon
ancestry….Baboons are pink with black hair resembling
    caucasian humans just better looking.

    Twinkle Says:
    November 4th, 2012 at 12:42 am

Watch P.Manning and then watch T.Pryor……one dictates
what the defense is going to do pre snap the other is trying to figure out where they are after the snap.

It’s true, but it’s not right to compare or lambast Pryor of this at this point in time. Peyton’s ability has come after a decade of live game experience and study. Pryor, Palmer and coaches know he can’t really absorb all that stuff until he gets regular live game experience, and learn from mistakes, learn from what gets thrown his way, and memory retention, nous to dissect this stuff pre-snap. Takes time. Just hope Pryor himself gets it happening and he can rise up to #2. If he can do that sometime this year or training camp 2013, it means he’s legitimately a chance. If he remains #3 all this year and after training camp, chances are he is struggling with that mental/playbook side of the game and the road becomes harder for him to latch on long-term in the NFL.

I’m just a fan of his and hope he can rise. Palmer isn’t long-term, Leinart neither, Pryor ‘could’ become that guy for us in 1-2 years.
