McFadden, Goodson get MRIs on high-ankle sprains

By Steve Corkran
Monday, November 5th, 2012 at 2:03 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Monday that running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson suffered high-ankle sprains against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
McFadden underwent MRI and X-rays on his injury, and the tests returned negative. Allen said McFadden has not been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.
As for Goodson, he is undergoing an MRI today. The results likely won’t be revealed until Wednesday.
For now, Allen said he is inclined to stand pat until he learns more about the severity of the injuries to his Nos. 1 and 2 running backs.
Once he knows more, he will decide whether to stick with the backs he has on his roster, sign a free agent or sign rookie Jeremy Stewart from the practice squad.
Second-year player Taiwan Jones won’t “earn” more playing time until he shows that he can hold on to the ball better than he has this season.
Jones bobbled a kick-off and mishandled a pitch from Marcel Reece on a reverse in the regular-season opener, and he didn’t handle the ball again until Sunday.
Against the Bucs, Jones fumbled at the end of a reception from Shane Lechler on a fake punt that got stuffed well short of the first-down marker. He got blasted after a 2-yard run in his only other touch.

– Allen said right offensive tackle Khalif Barnes is slated to return to practice Wednesday after missing the past six games with a groin injury that required surgery.
It’s not a certainty that Barnes will reclaim his starting spot from Willie Smith once he is healthy enough to play. Allen said rookie Tony Bergstrom is being considered for the spot, given Smith’s struggles from time to time.

– Cornerback Shawntae Spencer also has missed the past six games. For him, his absence owed to a right foot injury.
On Tuesday, he is scheduled to return to the practice field to gauge his progress in his recovery.

– Allen said he still hasn’t decided what to do with linebacker Aaron Curry. One thing is for sure, time is running out.
Curry’s 21-day evaluation period ends Wednesday. The Raiders have until then to decide whether to activate Curry to the 53-man roster, place him on season-ending injured reserve or waive him outright.
Complicating matters is the potential need for the Raiders to free up a roster spot for cornerback Ron Bartell and, perhaps, a running back if McFadden’s and/or Goodson’s injuries are serious enough to warrant adding another back.

– Defensive lineman Desmond Bryant was released from a local hospital Monday, and he is resting at home, Allen said.
Bryant was admitted to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley on Sunday after complaining of a fast, irregular heartbeat.
He has not been cleared to return to practice, Allen said. However, there’s still a chance that he will play Sunday against the Ravens, Allen said.

– Allen had this to say, when asked if there have been any discussion about re-signing veteran cornerback Stanford Routt, who was waived by the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday:
“No,” Allen said, without elaborating.
There you have it. It doesn’t appear as if the Raiders are going to revisit the Routt situation eight months or so after they waived him in a salary-cap dump.

I think I would rather buy a new mustang or camaro for the price of an older corvette.

What is the point of being able to go 200+ MPH, when if you do you just end up dead or in jail?

Who cares??? The issue is that Palmer isn’t the solution!!! For a 1st and 2nd rounder, he was supposed to be.

    ++++++++++

Palmer is supposed to fix an abysmal running game and a defense that would’ve had a hard time stopping a Division III runner yesterday?
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Fair enough. But if he can’t fix those problems, why the hell did we ever trade for him??? We could have put Ceasar from Planet of the Apes under center to miss the playoffs last year and go 3-5 this year. Meanwhile, we would have had our 1st and 2nd rounders to help “fix the problems”.

Anybody can look good with best running game in the NFL, compare Freeman’s stats from this year to last year and maybe you will figure out why the big difference
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

100% agreed! Precisely why the Palmer trade was so dumb. We could have drafted Doug Martin this year with Ceasar at QB and be leading the league in rushing.

    —-
Doug Martin alone wouldn’t have made the difference, you need O line and good scheme , you need some kinda pass threat to negate 8 men in the box , which TB have with Vjax and M Williams

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Ummm, we don’t have pass threats now???? Then, how the hell did Palmer throw for over 400 yards yesterday?? I don’t remember him catching all those passes by himself.

    What a dumbass interception……..man!
    ========================================

It really was. Again, you have to blame the coaches for this. The place was rocking, we were in the game, and you have to settle Palmer down. He got wound up trying to make a play and it cost us. In fact if we scored on that drive, TB would have just handed it off the Doug Martin and watch him run the length of the field for the winning score with three seconds left.

I had thought the plan was going to be to move Wimbley to RDE and put Shaughnessy at LDE and move Houston to the DT rotation.

I think the Raiders keep Wimbley if he restructures. Remember, McKenzie didn’t cut him until the last possible day. Don’t blame Wimbley for not wanting to restructure, but it’s not like Reggie didn’t want to trya nd keep him around.

As it turns out, we could have kept him and just not signed Briesel for 5 mil/yr. Who would play guard you ask? Well in my version of the O-line, Wiz and Cooper stay put.

Do you guys think it’s fair that Palmer gets all the rap in here for losing the game yesterday? Some people have an agenda against Palmer, which is fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinion! However, was it Palmer’s fault that JC went down and Boller was who we all knew he to be and get traded to the Raiders giving up the 2012 1st round pick and the conditional 2013 2nd rounder? In years past, I have never seen any quarter back from being down 18 and at least a shot! We came back against a pretty good Pitt team down 10! And for once, I do not see any quit in the team! Defense, it looked like they did yesterday, but not the offense!

    Yo Cork,
apparently you forgot the memo. Reggie made it clear he wants football players with a passion for the game. Routt never qualified for either of those criterias. The guy was an idiot over the years for never accepting his responsibilities and he was never a football player to begin with. He was a track dude that happened to play football to get a paycheck. KC was stupid to look at his stats and took the bait. This is the one time where the stats DO LIE and you have to look at it on film.

CP has nice stats and I think he’s playing pretty well overall.

You can’t disregard the fact that he’s playing in a Krapp offense and has no running game. You can’t disregard that the Raids don’t have a true nbr 1 WR.

    BUT…

You also can not excuse the TWO very poor, boneheaded interceptions in CRUNCH TIME.

The one in ATL likely cost a win.
The one yesterday likely cost a win.

If you’re going to be ELITE, you have to get it done in the CLUTCH.

Either you get the job done – lead the team to the game winning score or don’t.

    Carson did not.

And that’s the bottom, unalterable line.

So despite having good numbers and playing rather well under difficult circumstances, CP’s failure in the clutch in 2 key games can’t be overlooked.

Unfortunately, Palmer has a history of throwing these game altering picks in crucial moments.

An ELITE QB rises to the occasion and gets it done. It’s not going to be easy with all the negatives swirling around. But the ELITE QB finds a way. He lifts the team. He elevates the play around him.

Did CP LOSE the game for the Raids yesterday ? NO.

    But he didn’t WIN it.

He can NOT turn the ball over when the game is on the line. End of story.

Palmer is NOT by any stretch an ELITE QB to even speak in those terms is very premature. But he is a very capable and astute general that you can win with. But to take the game and leave it in his hands with ZERO HELP is IMO very very stupid. YOU know this passing game is still in the developmental stages you have to give him the needed help to be successful. To leave Palmer without a tough inside runner was asking for trouble.

Listen Palmer is very very simialar to Plunkett and Lamonica he is NOT a stat machine or an efficient QB who’s going to protect the football and take what the defense gives. Palmers game is to go for your jugular and hit it big. That is WHO HE IS!….period

Asking him to augment your running game with dinks and dunks will only frustrate him. You have to have a very good to greta running game and let Palmer get the big play over the top and to attack the defense and keep it off your running game. Now if you ask him to do something other than that well that’s YOUR FAULT!

Get a RUNNING GAME I’ve said form day one DMC is NOT a inside running power running game HB he is a speed back lethal weapon who can supply your offense with a ton of bigplay potential. If you try to use him as a feature back THAT IS YOU FAULT!! Because he will break down and you’ll kill his career I said it the dayu we drafted him and that is WHY I didn’t wnat him that high.

Now it’s up to the OC to figure this crap out and use the talent accordingly or else keep LOSING…………period

they are intentionally calling plays that won’t work ? most of the plays are designed to get more than enough yards and then some are designed to go underneath and gain yards after the catch, can’t do anything if the guys who are running longer routes are not getting open , and only open guys get tackled right before the stick… learn some football KK , this is not madden 13

Yeah but it was 2nd down , and pressure up his grill , throwing the pass away most likely leads to intentional grounding and sack is not an option, there wasn’t a good check down option either, every one was running uphill , i blame that on stupid play calling by OC , we should have called a screen on the 1st play or a Rb draw, would have def gained a few yards and we would have been in manageable 2nd down situation and then could have done anything from there, i blame all that on the play calling and receivers inability to run real routes

My favorite Krapp ‘throw it short of the sticks’ moment this year came in game one.

  117. aig-raiders Says:

Fact of the matter is the pass protection was not there at all, especially in the 4th quarter. Palmer had to take chances on throws right before he got hit. We got away with it and even got away with it on that 2 point conversion. But being this a young team with young WRs, it bit us in the a$$ at the end. I have no problem with yesterday’s offense. It was good to see our offense can move and score at will when we stopped force feeding DMAC. Our Oline is not very good right now. We are better off dinking and dunking to set up the draw play. 129. Kiwi_Blade Says:

Good news that Darren could be back soon.
The injury should never have happened.
We know that the ZBS takes three long hard years to implement correctly.
Does anyone wonder why Dennis was given a four year contract?
Most likely Reggie and Dennis discussed the offensive schemes that gave Dennis the most trouble when trying to defend against it in Denver.
Dennis knows that a four year contract gives him three years to get the ZBS scheme purring like a Rolls Royce engine in 4th gear.
Unfortunately the inconsistent early results has led to a diluting down of the scheme.
Diluting down (incorporating some mixed blocking) has been an absolute disaster and has led to the injury of our star running back.
Going with a mixed blocking scheme has just confused the players.
The Raiders must stick to the initial plan of pure ZBS and perfect it.
Our prototype engine is now clogged and needs to be cleansed.
The engine needs to be flushed and purified with new oil.
The loss of Wiz Snr has been a spanner in the works for far too long.
An assistant line coach must be brought in to help Frank implement the scheme.
The season is not over yet.
3&5 is unexpected but can be improved upon in the second half of the year.
    Dilution has cost us dearly.
    I Say no more dilution.
Go back to the original plan.
Go back to the three year blueprint.
    Go back to Pure ZBS.

It was either Palmer’s arm fell off , or receiver ran a wrong route , or he got hit in the process ,no way a pass is 20 yards off for any other reason , he was connecting on the fade routes all game long
    ==============

actually the answer is that palmer is a gutlesss turn over machine always has been. he is the tin man has no heart and will throw more picks to lose games in the crunch. he simply cant be trusted to throw it too often or when i counts.

maybe knapp should dumb down the offense and let him dink and dunk reading only half the field

The management basicall mismanaged the talent on this team and no one wants to admit it. Letting go of Bush was a BUGE mistake I said it when it happened.

ADMIT IT!!! Not having Bush is hurting the production on this offense and letting go of Murphy was also a mistake. But the basic misunderstanding by fans is they look at the stats these players put up on the teams they’re on now and assume it computes.

It doesn’t because the way we would have used them is totally different from their present teams. The Olineman we let go is hurting this team Bruce Campbell and Barksdale were MISTAKES. Tell me we couldn’t use Wimbley and I’ll call you a liar.

But Sir Reggie wants to establish his “OWN GUY” so he does a bunch of crap before assessing these players roles and I think made hasty decisions that are having ripple effects as we speak.

  140. Raider E Says:

Palmer has only been sacked 14 times, one of the lowest numbers in the league.

Mistic, will you say, outright and for the record that Carson Palmer has no heart?

  142. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

this guy is saying exactly what i told you leading into the bucs game

The Raiders are a very flawed football team that plays undisciplined, inept football on a week-to-week basis and are lucky enough to have faced two of the worst teams in the league in the first half and a Pittsburgh Steelers team without its best defensive player.

Through seven games, it’s clear that Reggie McKenzie and Dennis Allen will have to turn over a large portion of the roster for this team to become anything more than mediocre. The glimpses of greatness show what happens when the players execute as a team, but there are far too many breakdowns from week to week.

The 2012 Oakland Raiders have now revealed their true character. They have trouble executing even the most simple of plays, and that makes the job of the coaches that much more difficult. The Raiders are a bad football team right now and have a long way to go before even becoming an average football team capable of beating teams like the Bucs at home. – christopher hansen

  143. Raider E Says:

    Mistic1,

Give Palmer a little credit for christs sakes. Anyone who watched the game knows he was the best player and leader in a black jersey.

That less known fact 2-17 when throwing over 40 passes is the most telling, of course Palmer will throw over 4,000 yards, but the team will continue to lose as he does. He’ll look really good when the season is over.

And it’s not like Tampon Bay had top notch defensive backs.

Obviously, the main problem yesterday was that defense couldn’t recovered from the Doug Martin stump. I couldn’t believe it when the defense gave up early in the 3rd quarter. How could that be? The Raiders finally have a defensive type head coach and a supposedly top notch defensive coordinator. Can you imagine the type of crap that Chuck Bresh or Mr. Davis would be having by now?

Totally agree with KK on this one Mistic1, Palmer may not be elite but he is good enough to win big with. Like you I liked JC and thought he never got the credit he deserved in here. On this team in this system JC would be tailored made for it. It caters to his talent. He would be sensational in this system because he would augment the runng game with short passes. Palmer wil get frustrated and take shots he shouldn’t you saw it yesterday.

The coaches are IMO seriously at fault here due to there insistence on asking players to play beyond their talent level. This passing isn’t ready for primetime but it’s good enough to help a greta running game if the coaches would’ve kept the running game here.
