Palmer and Suggs go way back

Try though he may, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs just can’t escape Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer, when you think it might be Palmer the one trying to get away from Suggs.
They played against each other their entire college careers, Palmer and USC and Suggs at Arizona State. Palmer went No. 1 overall in the 2003 NFL draft to the Cincinnati Bengals. The Ravens selected Suggs with the 10th pick.
Palmer faced Suggs and the Ravens 13 times from 2004-10 — Palmer didn’t play his rookie season — with Palmer beating the Ravens nine times.
“This guy has kind of tortured me through all my college and professional career,” Suggs said in a conference call with Bay Area media Wednesday. “I’m very aware of the talent. I know he can make every throw. If you ask me, he’s very highly underrated. He’s definitely one of the premier quarterbacks in the league.”
Suggs said he doesn’t fear any quarterback, yet “I’m always worried when I play Carson Palmer.”
With good reason, too. Palmer won those nine games against Suggs and the Ravens while having only three passes intercepted. The Ravens intercepted Palmer eight times in the four games they beat Palmer.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh also is quite impressed with the Palmer that he coached against the past five seasons.
“First of all, he’s real smart,” Harbaugh said. “He’s done a great job of reading coverages and knowing where to go with the ball; that’s No. 1. Number two, he’s got this incredible arm. He can make every throw. He’s kind of a fearless competitor. Stands in there tough and he puts it in there, and that’s pretty much the criteria for a great quarterback.”
Suggs is one of the guys Palmer always takes into account whenever he plays the Ravens. That Suggs is playing this season comes as somewhat of a surprise, given he ruptured his Achilles during the offseason.
“It’s amazing he is playing,” Palmer said. “I remember when it happened, I remember thinking, ‘Alright, great, that sucks for Terrell, but he’ll be out by the time we get out in Baltimore.’ Sure enough, he was playing 2 or 3 weeks ago against Houston.
“That’s the type of guy he is. He’s an extremely hard worker. He’s going to come back early, and just when you doubt him, he proves people wrong. I played against him for 15 years now, a phenomenal football player, phenomenal against the pass and phenomenal against the pass–there aren’t a lot of guys who are good at both, like he is. I don’t know if there is another one, as good as he is, at playing them both.”
– The Raiders last played the Ravens in 2008, when JaMarcus Russell was the quarterback, Justin Fargas the primary running back, Javon Walker a starting receiver and so on.
Much has changed in the past three seasons. Yet, one thing remains constant, in Suggs’ opinion.
“Talent,” Suggs said. “Al (Davis) has always done a tremendous job of bringing in the biggest and the scariest guys. They always had tremendous talent, but what (they) have done over there is just stack the talent a little bit more. (They) definitely got weapons that Carson can work with.”
Of the 53 players on Oakland’s roster that day, Oct. 26, 2008, only eight remain on today’s roster, including two that started that game: guard Cooper Carlisle and defensive tackle Tommy Kelly.
The six other players still wearing a Raiders uniform now are: punter Shane Lechler, kicker Sebastian Janikowski, long-snapper Jon Condo, running back Darren McFadden, free safety Michael Huff and strong safety Tyvon Branch.
– The Ravens last lost a regular-season home game late in the 2010 season. Their streak has reached an NFL-best 14 straight regular-season home victories, including a 4-0 mark this season.
To that end, Harbaugh said, the Ravens take the field with an air about them, knowing that good things happen when they play in front of their own fans.
“There is probably a confidence level with that, because we’ve had some positive experiences,” Harbaugh said. “There’s been a lot of big games and tough games in that, that just kind of set that tone a little bit. But every game stands on its own two feet.”
That last sentence is what the Raiders are counting upon, that the previous 14 wins by the Ravens at their place don’t count for much when the Raiders play there Sunday.
– Allen reiterated that he isn’t prepared to make a determination on the status of injured players McFadden, running back Mike Goodson and defensive tackle Richard Seymour until after practice Friday.
None of those three practiced today. Allen said McFadden and Goodson are wearing protective boots as a result of their high-ankle sprains.
Coincidentally, rookie Jeremy Stewart said he is preparing this week as if he is going to be signed from the practice squad and activated for Sunday’s game.
“Yeah, they said it’s a possibility,” Stewart said. “They basically told me to be ready, and we’ll see what happens.”
Stewart said he has taken a similar approach since he signed with the Raiders.
“You have to approach every day like you’re going to be the guy starting. So, since I’ve gotten here I’ve been preparing for my opportunity. So, if it presents itself this weekend, I’ll be ready.”
He rushed for 257 yards on only 55 carries his final season at Stanford. He also scored 10 touchdowns on 62 touches that season.
“I feel like I’m a good finisher,” Stewart said. “I can find the end zone.”
Taiwan Jones and Marcel Reece are splitting the reps in practice this week. Like Palmer, offensive coordinator Greg Knapp said he is eager to see what Jones can do in a game.
“Pure speed, it’s one of the fastest I’ve been around,” Knapp said of Jones, “because he has that ability to burst and separate right away. That trait is not coachable, so he does have that ability to separate real fast which is a unique quality to have.”
Knapp said injuries suffered by Jones this season cost him some valuable practice time, which set him back in terms of getting down his assignments on each play. Ball-security issues also are a concern.
– Right offensive tackle Khalif Barnes said he feels pretty good in his return from a groin injury. Yet, he doesn’t sound overly optimistic about playing Sunday.
“Obviously I’ve got some kinks to get out, but you’ll get those out the more you’re on the field,” Barnes said. “Each day that goes by, the more familiar I get with stuff, the muscle memory starts coming back, and that’s how I’m approaching it.”
Barnes said he feels as if he needs more time to get back up to speed. That’s understandable considering he didn’t practice for more than seven weeks after suffering a groin injury that required surgery.
Allen said Barnes, Willie Smith and Tony Bergstrom are taking reps at right offensive tackle in practice this week. It’s possible that Allen will announce the starter for the Ravens game as soon as Friday.
– Michael Huff is going to remain at cornerback for the Ravens game, Allen said.
Ron Bartell is expected to be activated Saturday and play Sunday for the first time since he suffered a shoulder injury in the regular-season opener.
Allen said the plan is to play Bartell as much as Bartell can handle. With Bartell and Huff at cornerback, that likely means less playing time for Pat Lee and Phillip Adams.
– Allen said Seymour was in no shape to practice Thursday, that Seymour “couldn’t practice today if he had to.”
That means Desmond Bryant, Lamaar Houston and Christo Bilukidi might be in for more playing time inside if Seymour isn’t healthy enough to play Sunday. Dave Tollefson is another player that can move inside for a few downs here and there, if needed.
– The Raiders burned one of their 14 allotted practices in pads Wednesday, Allen said. They did so as a means of working on tackling on the heels of a lackluster performance against the Buccaneers.

The fact that it has happened over decades doesn’t make it a common practice. If every team with 6 or less in the win column swapped out their starter for their backup or Future Prospect year in and year out, that would make it common practice.

I find it interesting that the article starts with extolling the virtues of palmer and even projects him to break raider stat record. Then the article takes a bizarre turn, when the subject of palmer and pryor comes up.

This is why the media is suspect, and you must always be vigilant in your deconstruction of the writings from these devilishly clever word smiths.
So any one that says tp6 should play at the end of the year when out of the playoffs is a “radical” according to pryor.
this is what i would call propaganda, and notice how it is anchored to the very part of the article which attempts to document palmers recent struggles. we all under stand that the yards are nice, but he fails to contrast the yardge numbers with the win loss record or the turnovers.
This article is written simply to sell carson and dispell any potential upswell in enthusiasm for the young phenom.
people here in the town are tired of the losses, and have lost patience with palmer. everyone is saying “when do we see tp 6″? this is a clear attempt to extinguish the background noise, like a well trained agent running a psy -op.
I wonder how he will approach this in the final 3 games of the season when we are out of contention. Honestly i will be shocked if we are still mathematically alive after the BUNGLES BOWL. If we are still in it at that time this article may be considered to have merit.

u meant that it’s common for rebuilding teams, with older qb’s, to decide to go to their younger backup to see if they are the future. that way they know if they need to draft for a qb in the offseason. this has happened many times over the years, of course.
but U SAID it was COMMON to sit veterans at ALL positions at the end of a LOSING year.
but that’s baseball. ONLY ONE young qb was inserted over an older qb last year and that was midseason. MOST of the young qb’s were inserted at the BEGINNING of the year.

If 50 people die from the flu in CA over 5 years, it is not an epidemic. If 50 people die from it in 6months, it can be considered an epidemic of sorts.
Bringing in a backup or throwing in a prospect is a matter of inevitability. I believe if you ask many GM’s, they’d likely agree that there not going to drop their starter as soon as theyre out of playoff contention. Will a team do it this year? Yes. Will most teams do it this year? No.

I’ve never had the angry feeling that there should be more white rb’s or wide receivers in football. I loved Bo Jackson, Marcus Allen and MANY others. Honestly, i never even thought of their color. I do notice if a white rb comes along that is any decent. It’s an anomaly and it’s human nature to notice and anyone that denies it is lying cuz it is outside the norm. actually, i think these days, there really is more of a thing against white “skill” players. u rarely see a white CB. they’re usually moved to safety. brian hartline made waves cuz of being a white WR.
many years ago, a kid named alex smith was a RB out of indiana that came out early. he was really good. this was on the heels of anthony thompson and vaughn dunbar being excellent black rb’s out of indiana, so it would seem that he would be drafted. but he wasn’t, and he never made a roster.

It’s probaly not a coincidence that my Dad, like Kell, was born and raised in Oakland. His first Raider games were at Frank Youell Field.
He is still a fan, just doesn’t care as much as he used to.
Last thing I have seen him spend money is on a Moss jersey. Randy that is. I think what with Moss turned him off, and was the preverbial final straw.

Last weekend I saw Seymour over at Safeway. Was across the isle from the pumpkins. not all teams have mess all over the team , when a new coach takes over , we had no salary cap , and we had some guys who were just cashing checks , we had to even eat their salaries by cutting them , so that why we aren’t one of those teams yet , next year will be really different , we can be one of the team teams there , with some moves like a #1 WR ,legit pass rusher and new Dts ,good secondary

…and i’m not giving DA any passes. He was brought in to be our defensive minded HC.
On paper, we have THREE probowlers on our d-line in Seymour, Kelly (alternate) and Carter.
We have a high 1st rounder at MLB…the former 2nd pick overall in the draft in Curry, and a guy who supposedly should have been a probowler in Branch in the secondary.
I know the reality of what we have in those players but on paper….you would think that would be fairly solid.

You pretty much need good structure in the place in first place and some times that’s all that matters and other times ,that team can get lucky with schedule n stuff as well, COLTS really just had 1 bad year in the last 12 years , they had a lot of salary cap room to bring in players , Sf niners had great D, before Harbaugh came in , and again better salary cap situation, adjusts some things , rest is history , we have a new GM for the first time in 40 years , new everything from head to toe, came into salary cap hell, paid some players big money who underperformed , if we had that money we,could have made big difference with , a legit pass rusher and legit receiver we could have been 6-2 at this point

Look there are glaring issues with our team, first off all we don’t have any CBs and no pass rush, so that takes out out chances of becoming a top Pass D , then we don’t have a beast run blocker in the middle and we just sell out to stop the pass, which takes away from us becoming a good run D , then we have no play makers , that takes away from us becoming a ball hawk team, remember the ball clank off TBs helmet? Then on O we got OL that doesn’t even consist of full ZBS guys and since we had no money and top RTs means throwing a lot of money at them ,we had to make do with scrap n heaps then with that the O line can’t open holes for our only strength from last year ,so we are more of a passing team now, but we can’t do that as well as teams like Brees , 1 . We don’t got o line for that 2. We don’t got a legit # 1 or even legit #2 ,it’s bunch if guys taking turn with running the same simple routes ..so there we are ..we can’t do one thing great

They need to start running real routes and play better than the DB their lines across from when the push comes to shove , after all Palmer have to throw to these guys to score points , he can’t do that when these guys are getting owned and scared to catch passes on the middle , you can only call those comfortable plays so much ,you know the go routes and drag routes, but those aren’t going to cut it all game long , and the Oline has to man up and keep Palmer upright , see what happens when they do that (KC) game,Palmer easily leads us to a win

In the GOP wants to remain relevant nationally, they have to do what the Dems did: re-make their party, jettison the old guard and emphasize ideas that appeal to middle America. Dumping their obsession with abortion, birth control, gay marriage and immigration would be a good start.

If you’re running as a Republican, an independent woman voter might agree with 100% on the economy, taxes and defense, but the minute you start talking about using the government to force her to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term, you GUARANTEE she’ll vote for the other side. Immigration: Our Latino voting population is 10% and rising. Many of them are friends, neighbors or co-workers will illegals, and will see “DEPORT THEM ALL” rhetoric as a direct attack upon them. Can’t do it and still retain those votes.
The biggest point is that the Reagan-style “Let’s appeal to middle-class white voters and their wives, and f**k everybody else because we’ll have enough votes to win” campaign simply doesn’t work anymore.
Boehner actually started down that road today when he publicly admitted that 0bamacare is now “The Law of the Land” and cannot be repealed. The GOP tried running against it, lost, and won’t be able to do it again.

I would agree because that was exactly what I was thinking at the time, but now 20+ years later, Social Security, Medicare, the EPA, these kinds of things are still the hall marks of democratic party planks. What happened was Reagan came up with his limited government, efficient government, individual freedom, big military planks. Well, shoot, everyone wants that. Everyone wants no government in their face, wants government to respond when needed. Everyone wants individual freedoms and a kick ass military.
But now, 20+ years after the Reagan revolution, it is painfully apparent that small government means that they are exempt from regulations, not you. That government is responsive to them. Not you. And they have amazing individual freedom, while you struggle to break even at the end of the year. And the military is once again bankrupting us. That’s what this election was about. People are finally seeing thru this scherade.

Remaking the GOP now is going to be much more painful for them than it was for the Dems 20 years ago because the evangelical crowd considers opposition to abortion non-negotiable, mostly because of religious reasons. However, single women are overwhelmingly pro-choice, they now outnumber married women in the electorate and their percentage rises every year. A national candidate cannot win on a platform of outlawing abortion. We may well see the Republican party split in two.

Yeah, Jones and Reece trying to pick up blitzes isn’t going to be pretty. And against the Ravens, no less.
We may set a Raider record for screens and draw plays in one game. And if I know we’re going that route, so do the Ravens.
Not exactly an inspiring effort against Doug Martin last week, and Ray Rice is just a more experienced version. Flacco has a great TE and Torry Smith is really coming into his own.
I’m cautiously optimistic most weeks, but not this time around. I’d love to be surprised but I think we get waxed on Sunday.

I can see Palmer having the exact same outing as last week. Everything from furious comeback to lots of yards to untimely picks. I’m hoping for the best.

I’m not buying that injury kept him off the field this entire time as I’ve seen him do well on ST. I believe he was unfairly placed in Tit’s and Krapp’s doghouse as a result of week 1 – and that this was a mistake and an example of Tits and Krapp not getting everything possible out of the roster.
I had Taiwan as my MUP this year and still think very highly of him. My faith in him has not waivered a bit.

This Sunday’s game will tell us a lot about the Raids.
This Sunday’s game is going to tell us whether this team has any HEART.
The Ravens like to intimidate and ‘out physical’ teams.
Not just on defense (that unit is clearly down a notch or two) but on offense as well.
I still remember clearly our last visit to Baltimore.
The Raids got their azzes kicked. Not just on the scoreboard, but in every way imaginable. Whupped.
JLH’S backwards scramble to get out of bounds and avoid getting hit on a punt return was one of the most gutless displays I’ve ever seen by a Raider.
I hope we can win on Sunday, but I’ll accept it if we’re outgunned by a well rested Raven team at home.
What I will not be able to accept is if this team gets intimidated and doesn’t slug it out with Harbaugh’s boys.

I used to buy and sell oil and other commodities, my brothers wife is Persian so I would call his in-laws every week to get a head start on when Iran would place restrictions on how much oil they would export. (this has a huge effect on the price of a barrel of oil at times)

having had the chance to watch luck vs gabbert last night i was struck by a few things about both.
First off gabbert is not nearly as bad as he is made out to be. he is actually progressing over last year, and has improved. i see that he has no help. The o line is average at best, he has no one to throw the ball to, and the defense is awful. The coordinator also isnt using blaine in a way that maximizes his talent. he has a strong arm and he is a good runner. he needs to play in mainly spread formations, and the jags should up the tempo on offense. allow gabbert to run more zone read, and use more misdirection. They would be wise to revisit mizzou offense and add it to the playbook. poor kid the clueless jags will ruin him
andrew luck is amazing. he has single handedly saved that offense form being a bottom feeder. Now that they can score the defense can go back to what it always has done, be so so against the run, but pressure the qb. The gift of playing with reggie wayne has also benefited luck greatly, and he clearly knows to look up number 87. i can see luck having a a very nice season and just as everyone has said , he could be great for years to come.

The mods really need to do something about the punks that hijack handles and cross post. this place should be a place where football fans can discuss football without having to be exposed to racism and hate. yesterday was disgusting, and sadly it is just another in a very long line of shameful behavior in here.
There are youth that log on to this site and it is unfair to them especially.
As you can see there is no such thing as a raider nation free from bigotry, racism or white supremacy. If there were such a thing you will find no evidence of it here.
Some are overt, , some have been repeatedly exposed like for their true feelings about black people yet they try and be more subtle.
It is clear from reading this thread alone that just the mention of a black man in leadership is not only unaccepted but hated to the bone. even leading a football team as a qb is an eyesore to many here, even though football and sports in general are meaningless. that is why the mention of newton vick tp6 or james harris quickly causes the board to disintegrate into a frenzy of race baiting and under handed hate. you dont have to be an art major to connect the dots on this, picture is clear as day.
Dont be upset with for holding a mirror but this is your ugly reflection so called raider nation.
You sit by and dont take these people to task for their reprehensible actions, neither do the blog moderators.

Luck vs. RG3 is a very interesting debate.
I think they’re both fabulous players.
If I were a GM and had a choice between them, it would be a very difficult decision.
I prefer Luck as a pure passer, but not by much. I think Luck is better in the pocket. RG3, on the other hand, has more intangibles. His ability to extend a play is superb. There’s nothing he doesn’t do well.
I think they’re both great players.
Put a gun to my head and I go with Luck long term.
The reason being that he has better size and may prove to be more durable.
Only wish that a QB of their caliber was available when we had the number one overall.
Instead we got JaMoron.

Ok man, what ever you want to say to make youself feel better , if it doesn’t make you a hyprocrite after saying things like JC is better than Palmer because 12-7 > 7-11 , Griffin is better than Luck , because of some athletic ability , but record doesn’t matter , but it makes me a racist for saying all black qb’s suck , they are nothing with out running game just once after getting tired of you bringing up other qbs we don’t care about because they don’t play for us and constantly degrading everything Palmer does, and if you want me to call racist for it , go ahead, and what ever you say does not make you hypocrite then okay go ahead , believe that too , no body can compete with ignorance

Luck is running a pro offense not a college one the coach made especially for him. Luck already has the training wheels off the bike while RG111 is still trying to ride it with the training wheels on.

luck had the benefit of running david shaw/ harbaghs nfl offense throughout his college career. he is as nfl ready as anybody ever has been. the colt offense does many of the same things as luk did in college. luck has reggie wayne, add this to the fact that he is a great player and presto instant impact. The colts have a far better defense and this is why luck has 6 wins.
Griffin runs a totaly differnt offense. he as adapted to the wco incredibly well and is playing excellent football. he has a porous o line in front of him, his top 2 target garcon and davis are out for the season garcon played 1 quarter of football. The redskin defense is awful and has coughed up leads in several games , and that is why griffin has only 3 wins.
griffin has a far bigger arm he is far more mobile and can read a defense jsut as well as luck or peyton manning or tom brady, hence the 3 interceptions.

Mistic–ur obscene. First of all u have no idea how things really are. Killings like that come from a deep seated fear of black crime.
