McFadden, Goodson and Seymour no-gos

By Steve Corkran
Friday, November 9th, 2012 at 12:30 pm in Oakland Raiders.

As expected, running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson, as well as defensive tackle Richard Seymour, won’t play Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen said as much after his team wrapped up its third and final practice Friday and just before the team boarded buses for the short trip to the Oakland International Airport for the flight to Baltimore.
“You don’t ever know exactly how someone is going to respond to an injury,” Allen said in explaining why he waited until now to make the decision. “Obviously, none of them make enough progress this week that they were able to be up. We’ll probably be going through the same thing next week and we’ll see where we’re at.”
Allen said the Raiders will turn over the running game to second-year back Taiwan Jones and fullback Marcel Reece. It also helps that the Ravens are 29th against the run at an average of 139.5 yards per game.
Which player starts will depend upon how the Raiders open up on offense. Allen said Reece also will play some fullback.
This will be Jones’ first true chance to show what he can do in a regular-season game. Until now, he has been the No. 3 back for his first 1 1/2 NFL seasons.
Jones rushed 16 times for 73 yards last season. He carried the ball for the first time this season last Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and netted 2 yards on his lone carry.
Reece isn’t a true running back, but he is fast enough and big enough to hold his own if called upon.
The Raiders still have the option of signing rookie running Jeremy Stewart from the practice squad between now and Sunday’s game. He will accompany the Raiders on the trip to Baltimore, Allen said.
McFadden, Goodson and Seymour sat out all three practices this week. Coaches typically are hesitant about playing players that don’t practice all week.

– Cornerback Shawntae Spencer also has been ruled out for Sunday’s game, which comes as no surprise, given he hasn’t practiced since he suffered a right foot injury almost two months ago.
Ron Bartell likely will be activated Saturday, Allen said, and start Sunday. He will play right cornerback as often as he can handle in his return from a shoulder injury suffered in the opener.
Michael Huff will play opposite Bartell, with Matt Giordano remaining at Huff’s regular free safety spot.

– Desmond Bryant will start in place of Seymour on Sunday, Allen said.
“He’s had absolutely no issues, at least any issues that I’m aware of or that our trainers are aware of,” Allen said in response to the fast, irregular heartbeat that hospitalized Bryant last Sunday.

– Willie Smith is going to remain the starting right offensive tackle for now, Allen said.
“He has continued to work, he has continued to try to improve,” Allen said. “Again, we feel like that he’s the guy that gives us the best chance to be successful. So, he’s going to continue staying in that role right now.”
Khalif Barnes just hasn’t had enough time to get into football shape yet, Allen said, after missing the past seven weeks with a groin injury.

The only team that wouldnt fire their coach for Gruden is the Niners,..Jim Harbaugh is easily the best coach in the NFL right now.

    ====

Love the Whiners much? Harbaugh hasn’t proven anything in this league. He inherited a team with a scary good defense in a very weak division. He added just enough offense to make them not choke games away. Much the way that Gruden did in Tampa when Dungy could build defense all day but couldn’t get the offense out of the cellar. I assert that there are 10 other offensive minded HCs that would have done as well as Harbaugh did in that situation. Moreso, I don’t believe that Harbaugh would be doing any better than DA would be now with the Raiders siutation, inheriting a team with such a hole filled defense.

BTW — the hands down best coach in the league (as much as it pains me to say) is Belichek. Everyone that plays in his system, including and especially Brady, end up playing way better than they would in other systems. He takes scrubs that can’t make other people’s rosters on defense and makes them serviceable starters. He innovates before others around creative things like the two athletic TE approach. And more than anything else: he always ensures that he has a dominant OL around which everything else ticks!

The last point is key. Cable got it, but he couldn’t get the rest going as an HC. Gibbs made that work for the Skins in the 80s, and Parcells has done a good job of the same at his stops. And under Gruden’s Raiders (with Cable doing the coaching) that OL had a great running game and all the time Gannon never had before to make him an MVP.

And Knapp gets it by creating a system that allows non-stars to play at higher levels, although it does take time and finding the right personnel.

    2) regardless of stats and professional regard by experts, he swears Campbell was great and Palmer, on pace to throw for the most yards in Raider history, is horrible.
    3) he continually says we are racists if we don’t agree with him.
    4) he claims America hates black people, even though we voted for a black president. Twice.
    5) he says there is white supremacy everywhere, including the moderators.

GG, I see where you’re going with this and you know what…if we are 3-7 then seeing Pryor come in will be the only excitement I see getting gleaned from the rest of the season.

    ====

Not sure what you consider excitement, unless that invloves watching the Raiders offense flounder as much as the defense is.

What will be the same with TP instead of CP3 under center:
    - Offense will not be able to run the ball
    - QBs will turn the ball over more than we like
    - Raiders fans will be booing the QB again

    What will be different:
    - TP will get some rushing yards as QB, maybe more than the RBs will
    - The amount of turnovers will go way up as defenses figure out that he can’t read a blitz, shift or any other disguised coverages
    - The offense will pass for under 150 yards per game
    - TPs trade value will go from speculative and worth a flyer to some team down to worthless when people see tape that exposes just how unintelligent he is

Palmer is a bridge between that mess before and a future franchise QB.

Pryor is merely a potential future franchise QB. If/When the Raiders end up 3-6, 3-7, it’s time to ‘get real’ as an organization and start planning ahead for 2012.

Got to instal Pryor and see what we have, not just us, but the coaches. That’s got to mean 6+ consecutive games to ALSO assess his ability to learn and correct mistakes made from a week-to-week actually playing basis. Taking all team reps, involved in game-planning, taking the position of the team leader in team meetings and how he can ascend on-field or not as a team leader in huddles and certain game situations.

Basically, like what Russell Wilson has been able to achieve this year purely because he was starting from game one consistently. Ex, recently, Sidney Rice has mentioned how Wilson every week leaves notes in the receivers’ lockerrooms after spending all night studying film breaking down the next opponent, working on CBs and coverages that the receivers can exploit. He did NOT do this at first. Bit by bit, he assumes the ‘leader’ role, grows into the position.

Pryor needs to be afforded such a situation in order to properly assess his future prospects as a franchise QB BEFORE next year’s draft. Before we go out and invest a 1st round pick on Smith/Manuel.

    ——

Honestly, and seriously. Imo it was an indication of what Tommy Kelly said during the week. Upon hearing Carl Nicks was out injured all year for the Bucs. The Guard whom Martin had all year run behind 60% of the time, and had a 6.0 ypc behind, compared to other OL averaging only about 3.1.

Kelly said…we wanted to go against Nicks, against the best, and beat their best. But with Nicks out, beating them will just give them an excuse why. It’ll be much easier now to beat them.

Just me hypothesizing, but imo the whole defensive gameplan was like, we don’t have to worry about the running game as much, we can go half-azzed against the run, got to focus on stopping V.Jackson, M.Williams, J.Freeman.

  • DJ Johnny

I see people are pointing out that McFadden was Franco Harris’ing it this season running out of bounds, and still got hurt.

I said it when it was happening. What is he saving it for? Not a snowballs chance in hell he was going to be a 400 touch, 16 game back.

So when the game was slipping away in Miami, and he ran a beautifully called and executed screen pass, and decided to cadillac it OOB 2 yards before the sticks, 99.9% of the people in here blamed Knapp, for whatever reason.

McFadden is not great, and struggles to be good from week to week.

He has about 500 career touches left in his body in the NFL at a productive level, if that.

I agree an awful lot with the strategy to see your next high potential QB in action. Wilson clearly earned his way into that role by schooling the guys in front of him in preseason. Remember that highly sought after Flynn guy that they went and got as the heir apparent? oops …

My issue is that Pryor is not a high potential guy. He simply isn’t smart enough to play QB in this league. Get over it Radiers fans, it was a bad pick. If the team goes out and commits 6 games of a season into chasing a very low chance of success, then that needs to be weighed against the damage it will do the rest of the team.

Take Palmer out of an offense that is heavily based on complex reads at NFL speed and put someone in that I highly doubt can handle that part of the game and what will happen? The offense will grind to a halt. The WRs development will slow considerably. The OL and RBs will be facing 8-9 in the box all day making their learning curve steeper. The defense will spend more time on the field, getting more tired and prone to mistakes, undermining their confidence. And Pryor will hang guys up on poor throws setting up potentially serious injuries.

Yes, this is not just about the QB, it’s about the team. If you are going to invest in grooming the QB of the future, you better have high confidence he is that guy of the future.

Based on the way DA and staff are treating Pryor thus far, they see what I’m thinking that they are. They didn’t draft him so aren’t walking assuming that he is of NFL caliber. Nor do they have Al around telling them that he is and must be played. They are seeing a QB that doesn’t have the mental faculties for the game at this level. That’s why he’s getting no opportunites.

The only issue I have with your response is that we cannot know for certain until one has been afforded the proper chance. I could agree with you that Pryor might not ever because of whatever…but i will only come to that conclusion once there’s a body of proof. Look how bad Weeden and Luck started. Growing pains are expected. Especially as Pryor has had to work on so many fundamentals, basic mechanics, that those two didn’t. Pryor’s mountain is taller. But that’s why you give it 6+ games. Got to see if theres that from-game-to-game progress being made. Mistakes made corrected next time around. Things that can only be learned in live game situations and live between game film study situations.

GG,using your logic every player is a bridge to the next.Palmer, barring injury will be our QB for 3-6 more years. In the NFL that is a lifetime. The object is to win as soon as possible, not plan for 7 years down the road.

Bartell gets injured 1st game his final yr. of the season and misses entire yr.

Bartell getis injured his 1st game coming back and is out another half of a season.

    What’s next on Sunday?

Can he make it thru the game without a season ending injury?

    Stay tuned to find out.

    30 and then.

    ****************************************************

Son if Matt Leinart can learn and perform a little in this offense TP6 can do a lot especially when the idea of intellect comes in. Matt Leinart isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer by any stretch. And as far as Palmer puts it TP is doing quite well and Pryor says he’s getting better everyday. I’m going to chalk this up as another ignorant statement instead of what I really think it is. Giving you the benefit of the doubt. I’ve watched as much of TPryor as anyone and son intellect is NOT an issue with that kid. Technigue maybe but the kid has no issues in that dept, in fact I think he beats Leinart hands down.

Lefty, then what do we do with this Pryor fellow?
