McFadden, Goodson and Seymour no-gos

By Steve Corkran
Friday, November 9th, 2012 at 12:30 pm in Oakland Raiders.

As expected, running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson, as well as defensive tackle Richard Seymour, won’t play Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen said as much after his team wrapped up its third and final practice Friday and just before the team boarded buses for the short trip to the Oakland International Airport for the flight to Baltimore.
“You don’t ever know exactly how someone is going to respond to an injury,” Allen said in explaining why he waited until now to make the decision. “Obviously, none of them make enough progress this week that they were able to be up. We’ll probably be going through the same thing next week and we’ll see where we’re at.”
Allen said the Raiders will turn over the running game to second-year back Taiwan Jones and fullback Marcel Reece. It also helps that the Ravens are 29th against the run at an average of 139.5 yards per game.
Which player starts will depend upon how the Raiders open up on offense. Allen said Reece also will play some fullback.
This will be Jones’ first true chance to show what he can do in a regular-season game. Until now, he has been the No. 3 back for his first 1 1/2 NFL seasons.
Jones rushed 16 times for 73 yards last season. He carried the ball for the first time this season last Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and netted 2 yards on his lone carry.
Reece isn’t a true running back, but he is fast enough and big enough to hold his own if called upon.
The Raiders still have the option of signing rookie running Jeremy Stewart from the practice squad between now and Sunday’s game. He will accompany the Raiders on the trip to Baltimore, Allen said.
McFadden, Goodson and Seymour sat out all three practices this week. Coaches typically are hesitant about playing players that don’t practice all week.

– Cornerback Shawntae Spencer also has been ruled out for Sunday’s game, which comes as no surprise, given he hasn’t practiced since he suffered a right foot injury almost two months ago.
Ron Bartell likely will be activated Saturday, Allen said, and start Sunday. He will play right cornerback as often as he can handle in his return from a shoulder injury suffered in the opener.
Michael Huff will play opposite Bartell, with Matt Giordano remaining at Huff’s regular free safety spot.

– Desmond Bryant will start in place of Seymour on Sunday, Allen said.
“He’s had absolutely no issues, at least any issues that I’m aware of or that our trainers are aware of,” Allen said in response to the fast, irregular heartbeat that hospitalized Bryant last Sunday.

– Willie Smith is going to remain the starting right offensive tackle for now, Allen said.
“He has continued to work, he has continued to try to improve,” Allen said. “Again, we feel like that he’s the guy that gives us the best chance to be successful. So, he’s going to continue staying in that role right now.”
Khalif Barnes just hasn’t had enough time to get into football shape yet, Allen said, after missing the past seven weeks with a groin injury.

GG-Pryor doesn’t deserve to play or he would be playing. The coaches don’t need him to play so they can evaluate him, they see him in practice every day.To me it was telling when a week or so ago they brought in a QB for a work-out.If Pryor was showing anything at all,why bring someone in?The guy is a great athlete, but that doesn’t mean he is an NFL QB.It is the same old story-fans say he has to play so ‘we’ can see what he is while the coaches see him EVERYDAY-they know what he is.

    —-

    Not entirely true.

I touched on this before in a previous post from a previous week.

The only reason a #3 doesnt climb a depth chart is PURELY to do with playbook absorption. The coaches not able to rely on him to know the nuances of every play, that he can command the huddle, communicate the nomenclature of the play correctly, understand where everyone is meant to align, correct any out of place WRs/RBs/TEs at the LOS, understand the nuances of that play like the depth of the safety required to decide then whether to hot-route a particular receiver or carry out the pump-fake to the first read in order to execute to the designated second-read receiver, etc. Get the play called in time, get to the LOS, read what needs to be read, and know whether to make correct audibles or not etc. Plus, not knowing the playbook well, means the OC has to dumb down the game-plan, cant call more diverse and complex gameplans.

These are the reasons why a QB does not move up from #3 to #2 or #1 because they see THAT part of it in training. Still not in command.

But there’s a whole world of QB evaluation that can only be assessed from actual live game situations. Best way to put it…

When a GM/HC desires a rookie QB to be their starter, they know that there’s all that babysitting to be done for 1-2 years. Newton, RGIII, Roethlisberger, etc…they all get given one side of the field to focus on, or one-read plays, or plays they’re accustomed to in college.

If this staff was genuinely interested in Pryor, they’d genuinely get him out there once we hit 3-6. Even if Palmer were to stay another year or two, and they wanna make a run for the playoffs next year, that’s all fine. They’d still want to get Pryor out there, totally understanding Pryor has a long ways to go, that he’ll make a ton of errors, that they can’t call a full and complex gameplan with him, etc. Because they still need to assess his on-field ability post-snap, and whether he can absorb and learn from game by game situationals.

If Pryor is inactive like this, and remaining #3, that’s still not an indication that the staff don’t envision him as a POTENTIAL future prospect. It just means they’re still trying to win this year, and when we’re mathematically/realistically out, they’ll start Pryor to assess him.

If they don’t whatsoever all year…THEN we can ‘worry’ or say “told ya so” that the coaching staff do not even want to assess him in those in-game situations at all. That they want to draft their own QB.

I think that statement is the reason Mistic1 as well as myself get a little upset at the stigma that comes with any black QB. The question is always ‘is he smart enough’no matter who the kid is. If he’s black it’s ‘I don’t think he has the smarts’ and I’m telling ya’ in ll my years watching football and listening to sports commentators formal and informal I’ve only heard them say that about a white QB maybe twice. But they say it about every black QB save a few, some people don’t even realize they said it. It just bubbles forth like it’s common knowledge or something. It’s what you’ve been taught to believe and accept as truth……..that is the very definition of a stereotype.

TPryor may not have Rhodes Scholar written all over him like RGIII but his football acumen is damn close. The difference is RGIII was not held back but instead spurred on. TP6 was held back by a coach who only that of him as an athlete the same as many of YOU DO!. Well TP6 is sooo much more than that I can’t began to tell ya’. He’s young yet but it has zero to do with his ability to get the job I’m just a tad concerned about his ability to handle the criticism he will recieve fairly and unfairly from the media after what Russell did when he was here. That and that alone is my ONLY hesitation in his getting on the field as soon as SUNDAY……………….period

  • DJ Johnny

It IS posssible for rookie QB’s to win ball games and be a threat to take their team to the playoffs…and maybe more.

We have the example of Big Ben his first yr. and Luck this yr. Yes, they are exceptional talents but it can be done.

Pryor is still a mystery to us cuz we have not seen him in REAL GAME situations. Practice can only show so much.

If practice really meant anything than we would be 8-0 right now from what we were hearing from camp. You don’t know what you’ve got till you see a guy in a real game….or games.

I’m a well documented Palmer guy, but i would like to see what Pryor can do…in a real game.

  • lefty12

GG-I don’t agree with your evaluation one bit.Teams don’t bench their starters unless they feel they replacement will take his place very soon.Did Rodgers play when Favre was still in GB?No he didn’t.The coaches see him in practice EVERY DAMN DAY.They have a very good idea what he can do and it appears they don’t believe he might not have a future in the NFL at QB.Why did they bring in another young QB for a workout if they believe Pryor is the future?I’ll repeat-this isn’t college. You don’t sit your stars to look at young players unless you know the star won’t be here in the future.

  • DJ Johnny

Priest, i appreciate what you’re saying but i was in attendance at Camp Randall a couple of Novembers ago rooting like heck for Pryor to beat the Badgers. I hate the Badgers but that’s another story.

At any rate, i think some of the “doubt” on Pryor has to do with how he performed against the “big boys”. The stats are there and they are not good.

He dominated Ohio Bobcats and Tulsa and Austin Peay or whatever, but in those big games aginst big boy defenses he didn’t do so hot.

That being said, i think he he is working his butt off to learn how to be a pro, working on his game…all that, and at some point he deserves a shot. He just does.

  • JONGRUDEN2013

Yo Priest,..the only reason Pryor doesnt get on the field is because hes stupid. Period. Now carry your old butt to bed,..its late.

Oh no! I got dissed by fangs.

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

Let me rephrase that a little.

Al as GM drafted Pryor. Al believed in Pryor. By year 2, if Al were still alive, and the season was at a loss, or realistically so, he would’ve got the coaches to start evaluating these players like Pryor. EVEN IF, Campbell/Palmer were still going to here next year. A GM/HC who believes in a rookie QB, KNOWS that that player is still a liability at QB, that they wont know the whole playbook to afford them to run a proper full gameplan, that the player will turn the ball over etc. Even tho they see week to week in training he still hasnt got full command, they understand that to fully evaluate they’ll still find games to get them out there, give them some vanilla bunch of plays. Like they did with Russell in week 16/17 of his rookie year. And even after training camp year 2, and Russell wasn’t still NFL ready (as Garcia alluded to and angrily left), the GM/HC got Russell out there, starting those vanilla bunches of play, and assess him on a consecutive 10+ week basis.

The ONLY reason Pryor has yet to start that on-field evaluation in 2012 is because….1) his rookie year was a wash, no QB coach even; 2) They’re trying to win now with the elite QB they inherited; 3) The playoffs are still mathematically possible.

As soon as the season is a wash, Pryor WILL start. It only depends when our season is a wash. Could be 3-7, could be 4-8. Whenever it happens it will happen. He WILL start because Reggie/DA will do their due diligence on Pryor before next year’s draft. Not to forget QB Coach De Fillipo (?) is there in order to get Pryor NFL ready to evaluate this year. Technique and playbook.

The only time to concede that Reggie/DA do NOT want Pryor whatsoever is if the season is a wash and they’re STILL not activating Pryor. That means they probably don’t want Pryor. They’ll draft their own QB, and pit him and Pryor together, give that newly drafted QB those steps to compete….beat out your rival in 2013 camp, then ascend to compete with the incumbent starter (Palmer). They’ll then look to trade Pryor, or convert him to TE. Or if they REALLY dislike him, they’ll just cut him end of the season.

Until we personally see which of all those things the staff does, we cannot categorically assert that the coaching staff thinks this or that of Pryor.

Lefty12 you are sooo far off about Pryor it’s NOT EVEN FUNNY. But I understand why you think the way you do. It’s simple conditioning man. You’ve allowed yourself to see athlete only whether he does the other things well or not because he is such a fabulous athlete does not preclude him from being a top notch QB in this league given the same opportunity everyone else gets. You are very patient with Leinart and others but you are ready to write Pryor off with out even ever seeing the kid in a starting role. Why? what has he done that convinces you he can’t play??

You cannot say his college career because all he did was win……why not give this kid the same equal opportunity the Alex Smiths of the world have recieved. By all accts he works his ass off and has a great attitude there are no reports of any kind that indicate otherwise. So why not allow that kid the same benefit of the doubt you would anyone else. That’s all I’m saying…..

Roethlisberger was babysat his entire first year by Cowher. They gave him only one-half of the field to read at all. They gave him one-read plays only. Cowher set the blueprint for how to fasten the development of a rookie QB starting game 1. You give them a vanilla package of plays, and ease them in game by game. Feeding them more plays and complexities the more they absorb and master.

Since then, the pocket-passing rookies like Ryan, Luck, Tannehill, etc have been able to step in as day 1 starters. They’re ONLY giving them bits and pieces. And those dual-threat QBs, Newton, Tebow, RGIII…they’re also doing the same thing, giving them the plays they know and excelled at in college, giving them that vanilla offense bit by bit and feeding them more complex pro-style plays only once they absorb and master.

It’s why Newton has underperformed this year as they tried to step up the pro-style, but he has struggled more with it. They’ll continue to feed him and develop him next year. RGIII is facing the same hill next season.

The ONLY reason Pryor hasn’t been given the keys is because Al died and Reggie inherited the Raiders football operations. Pryor would be starting this year if Campbell and Boller were still on roster, if Al didnt trade for Palmer. And if he did, and stayed alive, he would’ve started Pryor in 2012 soon as we were mathematically eliminated.

Reggie/DA WILL do what Al would’ve done, start Pryor soon as we’re eliminated from playoffs. Maybe not because they believe in him, like Al did. Maybe they do after seeing how much work he has done. You don’t know how Reggie/DA/DeFillipo truly feel about Pryor yet. But they will do it purely out of professional due diligence before the 2013 draft.

GG, Your post made me think of something else too. You mention how Cowher basically “simplified” the offense for Ben…making it easy as possible for him to transition. That suggests that he limited the playbook as well, allowing Ben to work with just a few plays and the variations from those plays; and yet they still WON games.

It leads to the thought that maybe that’s part of the Raiders problem. Too much having to “think” about things and not enough just “playing”.

Makes me think if a team can EXECUTE, that even running a very limited but MASTERED playbook is a route toward winning games.

If a team EXECUTES…no matter what plays they run and even if the defense KNOWS what the other team is doing…they can’t stop it if they EXECUTE those plays.

It appears to me throughout this whole zbs implementation that there is just too much dang thinking going on.

Lefty12 it’s matter of knowing and being advanced in this offense Knapp brought Leinart here for a reason. That is the only reason Pryor is 3rd string. You are reading way too much into his inactivity. Trust me look around the league very very rarely are 3rd string QB’s activated. The coaches are any BUT unhappy with Pryor’s advancement you are way off. That is why I’m trying to let you know because I have personally spoken to Greg Knapp. Unless something has changed since we spoke during preseason they are very excited about what he brings to the table they just can’t investa ton of time in practice with him it has to come in the offseason is all.

Some of you are walking contradictions.Do you want Pryor to learn the QB position are do you want him to play WR,RB,TE,etc? If you play him at other positions it means he has to practice at those positions. If he practices at those positions it means he gets less work at being a QB.So take your choice-QB or a slash player because he shouldn’t do both.BTW,just because he is criticized doesn’t mean I or others have given up on him.It just means I don’t believe he is nearly ready to lead the team.It remains to be seen one way or the other if he’ll ever be an NFL caliber QB.

Why release Pryor now as apposed to the end of the year?…because the cost is the same…it makes no difference at all.

We should have went after Larry Grant. For a seventh=steal.

One comes here and all we see is debating about QB… which out of 30 things wrong with the Raiders, CP is 29.

    I am out too…

Another perfect example is Bergstrom. He was our highest drafted this year. Reggie’s guy. He still hasn’t even started yet. Does that mean Reggie/DA thinks he sucks and they want to cut him? Does that mean they’re NOT working to get him ready to start at some point this year to assess him? He will get his opportunity to start when they feel he’s ready. They don’t want to rush him in and set his development back too soon. The same can be said of Pryor, even tho QB is completely different. The time for Pryor will be as soon as we’re eliminated from playoffs.

Palmer will be coming back next year. They’ll again shoot for the playoffs next year. But while you have a starting QB trying to win you games, you also as a GM have to ensure your young #3 is being evaluated and developed for the future. You’re also trying to evaluate and develop other young draftees on scholarship…like Crawford, Bilukidi, etc.

That’s why you have a practice squad and why a portion of the 53 roster is devoted to a few scholarship players that one recently drafted.

Priest, i’ve heard it mentioned you used to work for the Raiders org. are you at liberty to say what you did with the org? I think you alluded once (it’s been a while) that you worked with Al in some capacity.

    I’m just curious.

  • JONGRUDEN2013

Pryor isnt a part of the Raider problem at all,..hes not even on the team…never active for a game…Priest has a better chance of getting in a game then Pryor does.

  • hellsbells

Hopefully Pryor improves enough to be the backup next year. Then you could run some plays for him from time to time.
