Son of Raiders D-line coach dies at age 4

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, November 10th, 2012 at 1:01 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Tyson Williams, the 4-year-old son of Raiders defensive line coach Terrell Williams, died Friday night at Oakland Children’s Hospital from a “sudden and unexpected illness,” according to a team release.
“We were all shocked by the news we received when we arrived in Baltimore,” Raiders coach Dennis Allen said in a statement. “Terrell and Tifini have been dealing with unimagineable tragedy this week, and our hearts go out to them. We’re all deeply saddened by the passing of Tyson, and our deepest sympathies go out to Terrell and his entire family.”

Tyson Williams, born Nov. 1, 2008, loved cartoons and helping care for his eight-month-old brother, Tahj, teaching his brother to clap before he passed away, according to the release.

Allen said the defensive staff would share the workload in Terrell Williams’ indefinite absence.

The team requests that condolences be sent to Williams at team headquarters at 1220 Harbor Bay Parkway, Alameda, CA, 94502.

Don’t really follow College ball too much. Saw some snippet earlier if some old coach pushing and knocking the hat off of an Asst. Coach. Who the heck was that?

I don’t care about chain of command, that Asst. should have laid that old man out. Get a job somewhere else.

Here’s my take on 2morrow’s game.We have the perfect mixture in terms of HB’s at our disposal it just comes down to playcalling. In Reece you have a very versatile bigback, NO he’s not your hammer per se but he is tough to get down and can take the pounding. He has great hands and is OK blocker basically you have what we gave away in Bush. Then you have the quintessential scatback in TJ you can’t ask for a better mix. It just comes down to playcalling how do you attack their defense with these two very versatile and talented backs.

I would use them very similar to the way Flores used Marcus and Bo with a meathead to help in shortyardage. Great coaches would get mismatches all over the field with these two. Because with both in the backfield you cannot focus on one and both are great vision runners. It is not Bush and DMC but it’s close and if they can’t get these guys to be productive even highly productive it tells you all you need to know.

At some point David Ausberry needs to be integrated into this offense I don’t care HOW they do it just do it. His run after catch ability is sorely needed. I’m not saying start him I’m saying play him. The same is true with the possesion rec’s in the redzone Criner showed you what he is now USE HIM smartly.

You have a QB capable of doing some special things if you give him the environment to do it in. You know he does have that penchant for the pick so as a playcaller you HELP HIM.

On defense I said early this year when the defense looked stable and improving taht if they are fo-real this offense had the ability to catch up and make this a very good team. Well I’ll give them a pass on last week. But they have got to get back to business and TACKLE…………period

If they do the Raiders can win this game if they don’t they have no chance……….period

Seems much less important with today’s news…

    Totally agree.
Problem is that Knapp is not as creative.
He will run the same offense and score hopefully up to 10 points in the 1st half. Then in the 2nd half go into panic mode.

  11. dr_robert Says:

so, cork said the Rb’s name was stephens. then he said it was spencer. but it’s actually stewart.

  13. dr_robert Says:

we cut lee, the starter, and ir’s spencer, the former starter, and kept 3 ST guys, adams, franzies, and ross. i guess that kinda makes sense. bartell is gonna start with huff. hanson is the nickel. gotta have ur returners and gunners.

  20. eastoaklandraider Says:

Its a shame too how Knapp cannot see the talent in Auz I believe he is better than Myers and I have said so since camp, this is just another reason he should be let go at the end of this season he clearly is holding the team back. People have spoken of Andy Reid but I just dont see him as a fit here, he is very pass happy and neglects the run game and for that reason cant see DA hiring him on. It will tell me a lot about DA if he fires Knapp, at least I will know he has common football knowledge, if he doesnt fire Knapp I will be very suspect when it comes to him.

  27. eastoaklandraider Says:

Well it looks like Huffy is at cb for the long haul and i’m glad to see it, not saying that I think he’s the answer at cb but at least we can take a good long look at him the rest of the season and see if we need to make a big move there or not. If he does well we wont have to make a big splash in FA on a corner and we can continue to focus more on the O & D lines.

  28. KoolKell Says:

The Ravens are drooling at the prospect of playing the Raiders. No doubt many expect career days, especially against our D. Could be the ugliest game of the year, for any team.

  31. Seymour Bush Says:

It is kind of curious that they let Lee go. Lee had not surrendered a TD pass all year and actually was very decent in coverage and not targeted all that much the last few games. have ever seen have the instinct at the LOS to avoid the
catastrophe that awaits those don’t have it.His blocking
at the LOS is nowhere near the level it is down field on
DB’s and LB’s……course we have our best wideout at
FB for some reason.Tampa’s Dline was very very big fast
and effective and our Oline did great holding em for as long as they did.We did have 10 at the line most of the second half and our WR’s were running routes while our QB was trying his best to keep a play alive instead of turning back to help.
Somehow I think Tom had a little more to work with in

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I’m kind of an optimist. I’m hoping that it’s a case of an otherwise talented rookie head coach making the mistake of going with a guy he’s familiar with. And that Reggie made the mistake of letting out too much leash with the rookie head coach.
I’m not ready to throw in the towel on either of them yet.
If they don’t make the obviously needed changes going forward, my opinion will change.

    =====

Glad to see this sort of levelheadedness still exists. Coming into this season, look what was stacked against the team:
    - First season minus the owner that defined the team for decades
    - Rookie GM, learning on the job what that job is
    - Rookie HC, with even minimal coordinator experience, and having a huge learning curve
    - Rookie DC, not even coming directly from an NFL job
    - Hosed salary cap and contract situations, causing the team to lose people it would have wanted to keep and keep some that they’d prefer not to at high costs
    - No draft picks in the top 4 rounds to start the rebuilding process

That’s a seriously stacked deck! Really, looking back then what were realistic expectations? 2 wins, maybe 3? For me, at that point (and still today) I would gladly trade a horrible, 2 win season in order to make this team better for years to come. What does one year buy?

    - All of those rookies at GM and coaching positions get that critical first year under their belt. That’s the year when they will make a majority of their worst mistakes as they learn.
    - Fixing some of the most egregious issues with the cap from 2013 forward, at the expense of front loading into 2012.
    - An establishment of the new team identity after the years AD (after Al’s passing)
    - The start of the era of Reggie’s guys making a name for themselves on the roster, like Burris, Briesl and Streater
    - They found themselves a legitimate top 10 capable QB in today’s pass first era that should have a few more years left in him to build around (assuming they can fix his contract for the next few years)

So in my mind, this team is already outperforming where my 2012 expectations were, sitting on 3 wins halfway through the season. If they pick up a few more before it’s over, that’s gravy in my book.

The problem is, with the last decade of frustration, a lot of Raider fans have little patience left. Once they saw potential this year, expectations shot way up again. I say that was fairly unrealistic considering all of the rebuilding going on, but it is what it is.

For me, I’m going to continue enjoying watching the development of the team and not be overly concerned with wins and losses for the rest of the season. I’ll celebrate the progress where it is made and blog helplessly about what I think needs to change over time. That’s how I choose to spend my fan currency.

“We are going to just wait until next year. This is a recording.”
The mantra of losers. Yes, I bagged on Al Davis for years, but I now realize Al was ahead of his time, and revolutionary in his actions. His decisions now appear to be spot on, with the exception of a few FA signings.

Now we are reduced to Wait until next Year.
    LOSERS!!

Watching Geno Smith for just the second or third time this year. Don’t know how he is at reading defenses or under pressure, because he’s not really facing much of a defense today, but the thing that really stands out for me is his footwork. I can see why he’s as accurate as he is; except for the occasion throw off his back foot he has really good feet. He squares up nicely and does a nice job of getting set before he throws the ball.

Also watching A&M and Alabama, and wondering why Johnny Manziel isn’t getting more mention in here. Only a freshman, and he’s leading the SEC in total offense. He’s completing over 75% of his passes on the road against Alabama today and has 90 yards rushing as well.

Bridgewater had a good game today also; his defense really let him down though. Not as sold on him, even though he has great stats. Mechanics leave a lot to be desired and he tends to float the ball. Only a sophomore though, so he has time to improve in those areas.

    Just my two cents.

Manziel appears to be the real deal. 24/30 for 250 yards and two touchdowns, plus 90 yards rushing. He has thrown some amazing balls today. Against Alabama on the road. As a freshman.

    BALTIMORESUN.COM says:
The Ravens’ two-time Pro Bowl runner should definitely be able to thrive against the porous Raiders run defense. Here’s why:

1.) Rice has been an elite back after contact most of the season, even given a smaller workload until last week during a win over the Cleveland Browns when he had a season-high 25 carries and generated 98 yards and a touchdown run.

2.) Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron seems to have gradually accepted that quarterback Joe Flacco isn’t having a particularly consistent season and has struggled with his accuracy at times.

Although Flacco is markedly better at home, where he’s completed 67.1 percent of his throws for 1,271 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions for a 106.6 quarterback rating and just 52.2 percent for 790 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions on the road for a 62.7 rating, Rice is the catalyst for an offense that’s fallen to 19th overall.

3.) The Raiders aren’t exactly a brick wall to run against. Middle linebacker Rolando McClain is a first-round bust who has been troubled off the field and a two-down plugger on the field. The Raiders surrendered 251 rushing yards and four touchdowns to Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie back Doug Martin, who has a similar running style to Rice.

This game sets up well for Rice to rumble for a lot of yards.

Plus, don’t forget Raiders standout defensive tackle Richard Seymour has been ruled out of this contest with injuries, rendering the defense even softer in the middle. Underachieving defensive tackle Tommy Kelly is no world-beater inside.

  80. lefty12 Says:

Wouldn’t surprise me though if Oregon or Kansas State stay undefeated then get the shaft and a 1 loss SEC team is picked for the championship game.

    BALTIMORESUN.COM :4. How one-dimensional will Oakland be?
    ( US Presswire / November 4, 2012 )
With running backs Darren McFadden (455 yards) and Mike Goodson out with high-ankle sprains, it’s unlikely that third-string back Taiwan Jones will have a hefty workload. He’s a speed merchant, but is unproven after excelling at the small-school level.

So, it’s the Ravens’ defense against an old nemesis: former Cincinnati Bengals Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Palmer.

Palmer is coming off a 414-yard game against the Buccaneers where he threw four touchdowns and three interceptions.

Palmer lacks the zip he used to have on his spirals, but can still get distance on the deep ball and is accurate and smart. He’s got two burners outside in former Maryland standout Darrius Heyward-Bey and Denarius Moore. And he’s got no running game to lean on Sunday. So expect Palmer to try to air it out and watch for Heyward-Bey and Moore on fly patterns against cornerbacks Cary Williams and Jimmy Smith.

That would be awesome. Game will be detrmined if:

knapp can devise a game plan (doubt it very much)

    Whut up ma beyotches!!!!!!!

Things have been mightily busy these last few weeks. Glad you noticed O – how you been?

    England just mere months away

  142. GG Says:

The reason why i think we can win…

With our RB crew, the coaches will put the ball in Palmer’s hands more often and more early. Usually with McFadden there, and that “he was drafted high and is supposedly our bell-cow back that we have to get him going again” attitude, we’ve been pounding him into a brick wall for 1 and 2 yard gains constantly early. Being too predictable.

So with the unknown Reece as ball-carrier, Jones the staff is a bit unsure of, and Stewart, the play-calling will be more circumspect when rushing the ball, and will have a game-plan calling run plays to those players strengths. So you wont see, (supposedly) Jones being used as a McFadden 2 yard battering ram on every first down.

This could obviously spell problems too…Ravens sniffing out whenever Jones is at tailback, it’ll be an outside zone stretch play or toss or screen, and whenever Reece is at tailback it’ll be a draw play or him going out in motion leaving an empty backfield, and whenever Stewart is in it’ll be a 3rd and short type iso run.

But if they mix it up enough, that could still work.

So Palmer’s going to be mainly throwing the ball, early and often, which should net some good drives early, and that in turn, “should” set up the running game, helping Jones in particular not having to face 8 men in the box constantly like the gameplan that wasn’t working with McFadden.

With all the concern for safety, you think they would consider it. Body adjustments to the time zone could have an adverse affect on player safety. But with the Raiders being the underdogs to the west to east thing, I highly doubt the league would even bat an eye at it. Anything to disadvantage the Raiders I don’t see the league doing anything to change that.

It’s interesting how different media outlets considered the release of Pat Lee.

PFT and other outlets called Lee one of the best Raiders CBs this season, having been largely reliable and making good plays, missing only one tackle on Martin that wasn’t really his fault.

Rotoworld however said he has mostly been badly abused by QBs all year and missed three bad tackles on Martin.

  149. GG Says:

As for worries about the DL, or front 7 to be more exact…

As others mentioned, Seymour’s play appears to be more reputation than real. And Kelly is better at going after the QB as a 1 gap UT.

Bryant is a beast tho, highly underrated outside the circles of RN armchair GMs. He can play 2 gap effectively, should bolster the inside allowing our ILBs a play on the RB. That’s if McClain doesn’t become a liability.

It’d be nice if we saw some 3-4 finally. Shaughnessy-Bryant-Houston, with Burris-Curry-McClain-Wheeler behind. Just to see it here and there and analyze.

    Vic Tafur again.
^ From Pro Football Focus: The Raiders’ offensive line has allowed 91 pressures from 348 passing plays giving them a Pass Blocking Efficiency (PBE) Rating of 79.8, which ranks 19th in the league. Of those 91 pressures allowed, 31 alone have come against right tackle Willie Smith, who starts again for injured Khalif Barnes.

^ As a result, Carson Palmer doesn’t have a lot of time to throw, and that’s why there has been a lot of dinking and dunking. He has the second-worst completion percentage (31.9) on throws 15 yards or more downfield this season with the second-fewest touchdowns (1).

  189. Purvisman/Intrepid/ Full Disclosure Says:

Those are some bad numbers. I’m thrilled we got Palmer but disappointed we can’t do him justice.

  190. Kirk Says:

Hopefully all the losing will lead to the firing of Greg Knapp.

  191. sirblitzalot Says:

Oh no. There are no words that can express the pain you and your family must be expressing. You have my deepest felt sympathy.

  192. sirblitzalot Says:

If the defense goes after the ankles instead of the ball tomorrow we may be able to keep this close! If Palmer throws another clutch interception in the 4th quarter then that will confirm who he is: Charlie Brown. Mmwa..mmwa mmwa… If CP can pull this out of the fire he can re-define himself.

  193. Priesttj12 Says:

This is my biggest concern about Palmer and the reason you cannot mention him with the better QB’s in the league he just throws too many back breaking int’s.

He has got to cut back on his t/o’s if we’re going to get to the next level. The defense has played well enough all year to be 6-2 but we’re 3-5 because of t/o’s late in games. You just can’t do it……………..period

  194. MiamiRaider78 Says:

It doesn’t help that the run game is non existent and you have to depend on the QB attempting a ridiculous amount of passes.

  195. Priesttj12 Says:

Great QB’s might do that once or twice at the most in a season Palmer wil do it twice in one game. You have to manage the game better than that. You have to understand the importance of of that time in the game and be protective of the ball unless you oly have one shot at it and the game is over. Then it doesn’t matter you do what you have to do.

He takes risky chances with the football when the game is on the line. You just have to be better than that……….period

  196. Priesttj12 Says:

But that is when the Playcaller and the QB have to use better judgement. Call plays that help him out and when you do he has to be sure it’s high percentage plays. No one can gaurantee you wont turn it over. It’s just taht Palmer has been very loose with the football late in games and it has to stop if we want to win.

  197. Raider O Says:

    Not true my friend.
Our defense allowed 30+ points 4/8 games and we allowed 28.6 points/ game.

  198. Zymurge Says:

When I first heard that Lee was the one cut to make room for Bartell’s return, I was surprised at first too. Then I thought about what kind of defense DA wants.

As painful as it is for me to admit, he wants a defense like the one across the bay. The reason the Whiners defense is so good is because every clown on that side of the ball makes tackles with super consistency. Especially so in the running game, which frustrates other teams and puts them into pass only mode. Their secondary is pretty mediocre at coverage, but they can all tackle too. So they keep guys in front of them and only allow short completions without any run after catch. Once they have a lead they get a little more gambly when they have teams in pass only situations.

Spencer is a great example. The guy was easily the best tackling CB on the roster. The run defense was a lot better with him in there containing the corner. Couldn’t cover very well though and was quickly exposed in the passing game.

Pat Lee was the opposite. More of a natural cover corner that didn’t have the nose for tackling. He’d make some of the tackles that ran his way, but he also missed a few. More than that (if you go watch some tape) you’ll see he is very easily blocked out of plays, so doesn’t show up on the stat sheet with either a tackle of a miss.

I think DA wants secondary that are tackling beasts; that are hard nosed machines looking to blow up running plays at the line of scrimmage; that aggressively play the flats and go ballistic breaking up screens before they get going. Lee wasn’t that flavor (whereas Bartell and Spencer are, and Huff as a safety better be!) so he’s keeping the guys that can tackle as special teams as well as backups.

It’s a very different paradigm for us Raiders fans to think of corners that are there for tackling first, coverage second, given the long history of amazing cover guys in Silver and Black. It’s going to take some getting used to for sure.

  199. Priesttj12 Says:

But the point is we could’ve won those games anyway. Yes the defense had some stinkers but the TB game was winnable. Protect the football and we win. The ATL game same thing winnable. That’s a 5-3 record right there. He has to get better with his decision making late in games that’s how great QB’s make their teams better. I know only a few can do it but that is the difference between good and great……simple as that.

  200. Raider O Says:

    This team is a mess.
    Can’t block
    Can’t run
Struggles to score (19th in scoring)
    Can’t rush the passer
Allowed a rookie to run for 250 yards
    Allows 28.6 points/ game

Palmer is one of the few bright spots on this team.

  201. Just Fire Baby Says:

LOL at Anthony Randolph being the 12th guy on the Denver bench.

Hey maybe if it goes to quadruple OT he might get a few minutes of run!!!

Can’t believe there were people in here whining about trading him for David Lee. That was one of the greatest fleeces in NBA history!!!

  202. smittstyles Says:

This is horrible. I have two daughters, ages 5 and 16 months; I can’t even imagine what Coach and his family are going through. I don’t know them but as part of the Raider Nation and family and a parent myself my heart bleeds. Football seems so small in light of tragedies such as this, but as they play tomorrow we can hope they honour Tyson’s memory with an inspired performance. Godspeed little man.

  203. Priesttj12 Says:

Don’t get me wrong no one is faulting Palmer for our record that is not what I’m saying I’m saying he could’ve been the difference it’s all about that NEXT LEVEL. He’s good enough to do it but for some reason he’s making game ending throws late in games. He plays outstanding all game then pretty much doesn’t finish.

  204. Raider O Says:

    BHP,

Winnable?! I don’t think any team can win when they allow a RB to run for 250 yards.
So it’s CPs fault we lost to TB and not the defense that allowed a rookie to run for 250 yards?

  205. Priesttj12 Says:

The Indy Colts aren’t better than we are and we beat the Steelers should’ve beat ATL so this team can’t be all that bad it’s just finishing has been a problem.

  206. Just Fire Baby Says:

If the other 21 guys played at about the level Carson Palmer is playing, we would be a minimum of 5-3, probably 6-2.

He certainly hasn’t been perfect, but nobody else has been relatively close to perfect either.

  207. Priesttj12 Says:

So maybe yuou didn’t see that game but we were down by 3 with the ball with 2:34 left and he threw 2 picks. Are you really saying we couldn’t have won that game? That game was there for the taking we just didn’t take it.

  208. Priesttj12 Says:

OK! Like I said no one is blaming Palmer for our record, maybe you didn’t comprehend that my point is if HE wants to get to that next level he can’t be the reason we didn’t finish.

  209. Just Fire Baby Says:

Colts have an elite QB who is a leader, and are playing massively inspired ball due to the coach situation.

Not a team in the NFL that wants to play them in the postseason.

  210. Raider O Says:

    BHP,

You know NFL history more than me, but I can’t think of any team that managed to win a game when they allowed 250+ yards rushing.

  211. Just Fire Baby Says:

if HE wants to get to that next level he can’t be the reason we didn’t finish.

    ***************************

QB’s TYPICALLY don’t find a next level this late in their career. Sure there are some, but they are few and far between.

This is who he is, the rest of the team needing to improve is much more of a reasonable expectation, than to think Carson is going to turn into a top 5 QB.

  212. Priesttj12 Says:

Ok what the hell does that have to do with what happened against TB I’m saying the game was there for the taking and he threw 2 bad picks………to argue that is sensless. I’m not saying he is the REASON we lost I’m saying he could’ve been the reason we WON!!

How many shots did he miss in the last few minutes of regulation and both OT’s? And the missed FT’s to ice the game, followed by letting Galonari dunk on him with 10 seconds left?

    Pitiful.

  228. Just Fire Baby Says:

I ain’t saying your blaming him Priest, I am saying (speaking for myself here) that this about as good as it gets with Carson.

To expect him to carry a terrible defense and no running game any further than this is pretty unreasonable for Carson Palmer.

He isn’t one of the elite’s elite.

  229. GG Says:

The one thing that aggravates me more than anything is that I am a strong believer that the DL and OL is the key to football, like Belichick believes. He puts the most effort into those two areas. Can suffer thru a weaker DB corp if the front 7 (more exactly) is incredibly good. And on offense literally EVERYTHING comes from a good/bad OL.

We have had a woeful OL for over a decade, I’m sick of it. Sometimes it might be good in the run, but it’s the pass protection that matters the most, and has been the main culprit of Raider football for over a decade.

I hope Reggie focuses most of his attention in the off-season on building a top 5 OL and front seven.

  230. Just Fire Baby Says:

The knock on the Patriots coming into 2012 was a crappy O-line wasn’t it?

  231. Raider O Says:

  232. Just Fire Baby Says:

49ers have given up 10 more sacks than us, even though we have attempted 113 more passes than them.

  233. GG Says:

I don’t want to see all these sexy DB/WR/RB/QB picks. I know GMs/coaches often know they can find quality OL/DL cheap in the late rounds. So they blow their wads on the sexy playmakers who take 3 years to develop, or letdown expectations by becoming busts.

I’d rather just see for once Reggie just draft OL and DL and LB all the way from the 1st round thru to the last…okay maybe a sexy mid-round DB….but there has to be a beast NT or two, another tackle, guard, a beast center, an edge rusher, and a couple more nasty ILBs.

They had issues. But what are the PFF stats on team OLs at the moment? The Patriots have always had one of the best pass-protecting OLs in the league.

  237. Just Fire Baby Says:

I am all for drafting an elite edge-rusher in the first round.

But there is a reason DB’s and WR’s make more money than ILB’s and RT, and Guards.

They are more important and not as easy to replace.

You can have a fringe Pro Bowl RG, and replace him with a 4th round pick fairly easily the next season.

You have a fringe Pro Bowl DB or WR, you might not adequately replace him for 8 years.

  238. Just Fire Baby Says:

The Patriots have always had one of the best pass-protecting OLs in the league.

    ******************************

And yet there are always replacing guys, year after year.

    The one constant, the QB.

Elite QB’s make everyone better. Their line doesn’t face the same things the Raiders O-line does, as the opposing D’s fear blitzing Tom too much, and have to double-team their TE for crying out loud.

What player on the roster that particpated in most offensive or defensive plays can you not say that about? There are 11 guys on defense that could’ve made more timely tackles, better reads diagnosing plays, got away from blocks faster, etc — any of which could have kept a TB score from happening. There are 10 others on offense that all could have done things better, like make a catch they didn’t, make a better read on a defender to get more open for Palmer, hold their blocks a little longer to buy him time, or for Gad’s sake, open a frickin hole so that they could have a running game and not have to throw 60+ times!

It’s just a worthless statement to myopicaly focus on anyone player, especially that one player is arguably playing at a higher level than anyone else on the team right now!

In the face of things like facts this whole argument looks much more personally agenda driven and much less football objective. I mean, if you wanted to rant on how Cooper Carlisle is getting routinely manhandled or how the DL disappears for whole series at a time and clamor for upgrades there, we’d all be hearin’ ya. Changing any of those is going to have a whole helluva lot more positive impact than changing out the well performing pieces first.

    ======

Did you watch the playoffs last year? If you can get to Brady, he becomes less than average. That whole offense is predicated on having more time in the pocket than any other team. That is what makes it so hard to cover Welker because he triple moves then runs all the way across the field to get open. When the OL wasn’t giving him his seconds, they tried switching to a quick passing game and looked weak.

As for the Colts, it’s an interesting anecdote, but it’s missing one little thing: facts. After acquiring Luck, the Colts revamped their OL. 3 newly acquired starters from trade and free agency and one starter moving from tackle to guard. That’s an 80% change in OL, so maybe the credit shouldn’t go just to Luck.

  253. Zymurge Says:

In the world of Palmer support, let’s look at something. Instead of reading what the pundits say about Palmer and his habit of interceptions, what if we looked at him relative to his peers.

If you look at ints per pass attempts, he is on the same pace as: Brees and Luck (rounded to the nearest tenth percent anyway) and doing better than names like: Romo, Vick, Eli, Dalton, Rivers, Cutler … you know, all those names you drafted higher in your fantasy leagues.

He’s put the ball up more times than habitual throwers like Brady and Rodgers, yet without — and I hope we can all agree — nearly as good of a surrounding cast. And he’s done that without a painful number of picks based on his peers numbers.

Now if you took away the three ints he tossed this year when Moore either ran the wrong option or slipped, and maybe the one where Ford gave up on a deep throw where he had the clear angle on the safety, Palmer would be sitting at the top of the class. Add the four TDs that have bounced out of his receiver’s hands this year, and then we’re also talk about him near the top in TDs.

That last paragraph is not about excuses but just to illustrate that he’s done what he can do to deliver the ball to the right place at the right time with a lot of consistency. When his young WRs start making less mistakes, we can all only hope that Palmer can maintain this same high level of play so that we can see one of the best air games in Raiders history clicking.

i’m excited to not only see what taiwan and reece can do but also to see if it makes any difference at all in the run game. if they get off, then we know the problem is dmc. if they don’t, then we know it’s the line.

personally i think it’s both. the line hasn’t been opening holes, and dmc doesn’t seem very explosive. and he also seems to have no feel for waiting for the hole to open, and THEN exploding.

i have a feeling taiwan and reece won’t be as antsy about it. taiwan is small and won’t wanna run into a wall. and he’s slippery, so he can burst thru a crease when he sees it.

also, reece seems to run very well to seams, when he catches the ball. and he likely won’t blast into any walls either, since he’s not big on blocking.

so, we might really see an improved run game, which would give us a serious chance in this game.

i don’t think the ravens are nearly as good as their record. their defense sucks, and their offense, other than rice, is marginal.

    *************

anyone who has watched the games, and understands football would agree, including me.

our record-setting golden haired hero is doing great. he just needs the rest of the team to catch up.

    Yes. 110%.

  261. mcfadden20. Says:

Maybe we will find our own Arian Foster with that practice squad guy, McFadden should be traded for whatever pick we can get for him next year, he will never b the same under any scheme , he’s just collecting checks along with Seymour,Kelly

  262. mcfadden20. Says:

Des Bryant is our best interior Oline , let him start every game over, they should IR Seymour or use the same plan as they use fr McClain, Not sure if its lack of desire or talent has dropped or its the knee injury , if its the knee injury or talent have dropped off, use him as a part time only ,give him only 15-20 plays , but if its lack of desire ,put him on IR already ,give guys like Christo and Houston chance inside

when we picked dmc, i didn’t like his body style and felt he could be a bust. he seemed to prove it for awhile. then he shocked the heck outta me and cuz of his crazy production, i had to shrug my shoulders and say “ok, he’s really good.” but now he seems to look much more like he did originally. i fear he was a bit of of a flash in the pan.

regarding stewart, i’m intrigued. he was good enuff to be considered the starter at stanford going into his junior year. he scored a lot. seems like he could be the kind of guy who comes outta nowhere, just cuz he never stayed healthy at stanford and he was slept on. maybe wishful thinking.

  264. mcfadden20. Says:

Kelly is still some what fine in my book, but he shouldn’t be brought back next year either , too much money for what were getting from him.. Next year Dline should look like this Bryant,Houston,Chriso Bilukidi, FA pickup/Draft guy

DE.. should look like this Shaugnessy, Crawford, beast DE, through draft or FA , situation pass rusher DE/LB type

I had doubts about the scheme before maybe it’s the scheme ,but DA n guy were right not trying to suit the scheme around IR prone guy, who’s not even giving 100% out there , going down too easily , running out on bounds 2 yards short of marker.. If we stick with this scheme I feel like we will find a some cheap RB that will fit these scheme just fine and we will, along with RT and C for this scheme , they should get rid of briesil too , and bring in cheap OL , who would be a great system fit .. And we will never look back … All the money saved by trading McFadden and letting go Briesel , would be useful to bring in guys at other positions like DE , WR or secondary

  266. mcfadden20. Says:

if huffs Holds up at CB and Bartell stays healthy ,we can bring both guys back with Joselio as NB, only needing a FS and backups at both safety positions to improve on

  267. mcfadden20. Says:

Wheeler should be brought back next year , if the guy isn’t asking too much money , Burris would take over the other outside spot , leaving on MLB spot to find a starter at after cutting/trading McLain

  268. mcfadden20. Says:

WR unit should look like this #1 receiver through FA, Streater should take over #2 , Moore and DHB would be back ups , Criner, ford , another late round pick ,fight it out for the last 2 spots

  269. dr_robert Says:

i think it’s safe to say kelly and seymour are history after this season. i like bryant. works hard. bilukidi may be very good. i think a pass rush end is our #1 priority in the draft.

we need another LB. i would love manti teo but i think a pass rusher is most important. perhaps we could actually get a rush guy in the 2nd or 3rd. teo is a bad azz and he is a bigtime leader. he would take the defense to another level.

corners will be a big deal too. rookies aren’t a great proposition for immediate success but bartell and huff could get us by for another year.

bergstrom will slide in and wiz should move back to guard. i think they’ll probably keep brisiel even though he has been mediocre. that leaves center, and that could come thru free agency.

so, i think we’ll see most of our picks come on the defensive side.

  270. mcfadden20. Says:

Oline would look like this. VELDHEER -Wiz- Fa/drafted center , Briesel??? , and Bergstrom at RT -or FA/draft guy if he can’t keep up

  271. dr_robert Says:

at wr, i like moore better than u do. i think he could be pretty good. at least a #2. not sure dhb will ever be a true starter. i think streeter and criner could develop. and ford will be back as a returner/slot guy, where he fits best. it likely won’t be a priority like the line and defense.

if the o-line gets better, palmer can work with what he’s got well enuff.

Exactly rem all the noise , DVD was making in training camp, coaching wanted that on tape in actual games , and the guy got abused by 2nd -3rd stringers in pre-season, which is why he’s not here , rem when people went wild over TP run and the pass to J -Criner for long TD , they neglected his other weaknesses, which is why he’s inactive , Taiwan and Ford are just guys made for special teams , Ausberry is not ready , bergstrom is not ready either but kinda coaches fault on that 1 , being asked to learn 4 different positions can’t be easy for the first time in the NFL

Realistically, Jeremy Stewart is active for special teams duty. Can’t see him getting more than 1 or 2 carries. Only way I see him getting a look is if Jones has a nervous shocker, fumbling, and/or can’t get going at all, like 5 carries for 8 yards, and they just decide to give Stewart a few carries to see if he can do anything.

I am also a bit unsure if Knapp/DA will even give Jones any carries. Last week, when both backs were out, Jones still only got 1 carry, which doesn’t give anyone confidence that they can trust him.

And reading Knapp’s interview…even if it was about 4 days ago….he didn’t seem enamored with the idea of Jones featuring, using the words “if he even gets any snaps” or something. While when talking of Reece used the word “confidently” about the coaches relying on him to carry the ball.

TB was a winable game too, I don’t think our run D is that bad , it’s the pass O in concerned about.

So I will give the D some pass for this reasons

    1. Bryant was out in 2nd half when they got abuse on the ground
    2. Seymour is not over his injury/ he will be out ,which should be plus
    3. Rest factor 1. TB was fresh coming off 10 days rest 2. We came into the game after we 2 straight games against teams coming of a bye week

Colts weren’t that bad last year , imagine playing with a 3rd stringer who never prepared for the games after sitting behind Peyton for years , with an average back up they could have pulled 4-5 more wins then they got lost year , but the guy was more like a 3rd stringer/ CFL Qb

re: dmc and goodson, high ankle sprains are usually a few weeks. say 4. at that point we’ll know all we need to know about the season and the rb’s.

just based on dmc’s history, i am skeptical about his return. goodson showed his toughness in preseason when he suffered the neck injury. i suspect he’ll be back quicker. i like him too. he’s fast and he’s built better than jones or dmc. more of a classic rb body. would love to see what he could do with a few games of 20+ carries. he was pretty good in carolina when williams/stewart were hurt.

Have young players starting at both positions and rotating with other guys and haven’t missed a beat, maybe we should do that ? give bergstrom chance at RG , RT

McFadden has fumbled 14 times in his 5 years here, including 3, 5, and 4 in his first three seasons.

Goodson has fumbled 5 times in four years (2011 he didnt get any carries).

Maybe Taiwan fumbles every now and then in practice, but that doesn’t mean too much come game day. I mean, either McFadden has also fumbled a lot in practice but that never stopped any coach starting him each week, or, he has seldom fumbled in practice but come live games he still coughs it up, meaning can’t take too much stock from practice.
