Grading the Raiders from Ravens game

Here is how beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders (3-6) on their performance in a 55-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens (7-2) on Sunday:

Pass offense

Another prolific stat game for Carson Palmer (29 of 45, 368 yards, 2 TDs). He had a 55-yard touchdown pass to Darrius Heyward-Bey and one of 30 yards to Denarius Moore, and he kept the Raiders moving the ball. But there was also an interception, a lost fumble and another fourth-and-1 where he got stepped on by Mike Brisiel and took a 4-yard sack.

Grade: B

Run offense

Marcel Reece rushed a career-high 13 times for 48 yards, with Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson out with high-ankle sprains. Rookie Jeremy Stewart ran seven times for 22 yards, and the coaching staff has very little confidence in Taiwan Jones. Raiders had no gain of more than 9 yards and averaged 3 yards per carry.

Grade: D-minus

Pass defense

Joe Flacco (21 of 33, 341 yards, 3 TDs, 1 interception) did as he pleased and found the wide open spaces between the hash marks. Michael Huff had an interception at the Baltimore 19, but the offense only got a field goal out of it. Torrey Smith caught touchdown passes of 20 and 47 yards and tight ends Dennis Pitta and Ed Dickson had seven catches for 126 yards.

Grade: F

Run defense

The Raiders took the Doug Martin lesson of the previous week to heart as Ray Rice gained just 35 yards in 13 carries with a long run of 7 yards. Not until Bernard Pierce had a 12-yard run in the second half did Baltimore get a running play in double figures. They gave ground way to easily on Rice’s 7-yard touchdown run.

Grade: B

Special teams
A muffed punt by Phillip Adams led to a Baltimore touchdown and Jacoby Jones ripped off a 105-yard kickoff return to finish the scoring. Sebastian Janikowski converted field goal attempts from 22 and 47 yards and Shane Lechler punted well with a 54.8 yard gross and a 47.6 net.

Grade: D-minus

Coaching

The Raiders secondary looked as if it had never played together before as Flacco passed at will. The Raiders were fooled by a Ravens fake field-goal attempt that resulted in a 7-yard touchdown run by holder Sam Koch. Coming into a difficult road venue, the Raiders didn’t have the look of a team that was prepared to play, and coach Dennis Allen said the responsibility lies with him.

Grade: F

DA (retroactively D0A at this point) has to be thinking he may be on the hot seat after his vaunted D gives up 97pts in 14 days.

Up next N.O. who could slop a 60 burger on us next.

Two questions to non-troll members of the Nation…

    1. Is there a realistic scenario that gets DOA azzcanned mid-season? If so what would have to happen?

    2. Same as 1 above but for end of season…Again what would have to happen?

FWIW I honestly think both are possible given the COMPLETE AND UTTER IMPLOSION especially on the D side of the ball, DOA’s ‘specialty’…

If this gets worse (and it looks like it sure can at this point) he may be toast. That’s something I didn’t think was even remotely possible 2 weeks ago.

I also think if he continues to COMPLETELY ABNADON THE RUN -IMMEDIATELY AT KICKOFF- as he has done the last 2 weeks he will be unwittingly putting his ill-fated regime to an end. Even when you score with the no huddle/no back offense you end up putting MORE pressure on your weak-azz D since you score too quickly (whenever u do end up scoring)…..

I’m now thinking odds are he’s done if thins don’t radically improve soon…

PS I have no horse in this race. I came into the season open minded and optimistic (albeit a bit confused in Jan when Reggie decided to not give Hue a chance in 2012).

Ok, so what ‘cha all think?

Good & fair questions. I don’t see RM canning him during the season. At the end of the season, maybe. BTW, I love the new moniker “DOA”. Very appropriate given most recent results. If DOA doesn’t take positive action like firing Hoffman, downgrading Knapp or some other positive action, his days in fact may be numbered. Keep in mind RM is new and UNPROVEN. So, to some extent, he’s on the hot seat too. Some may think “well it can’t get any worse”. Believe me, “it can get worse”. The Saints could easily run the boards on us big time. 60 points is not out of question -Brees is a point machine. He will have a field day with our back 7. DOA needs to something drastic to show he’s large & in-charge. Business as normal will only prove that’s he’s not ready for this level of management. If this continues and/or gets worse for the remainder of the year, I don’t see him surviving as head coach. He could gracefully take a demotion to DC while some other proven coach, like Mike Holmgren or the like gets hired as HC. RM needs to do what he’s got to do to see that this team is supplied with talent. That goes for coaching as well as players.

  • HayesDaze37

It’s a great day to be a Raiders fan. Isn’t it?!

    Grade this game??

F’s across the board. F’s and nothing but F’s.

Carson Palmer throwing the ball 61-times per game is insane, and should never have happened yesterday…basically abandoning the run in the first half was doom.

Greg Knapp cannot call plays. Knapp might be able to diagram a good play…but he CANNOT PUT TOGETHER A GAMEPLAN that makes sense, or one that ebbs-and-flows within the game when changes are necessary.

The Offensive Players know Greg Knapp can’t call a good game. Everybody in the NFL knows Greg Knapp cannot call a good game…he proves it week after week.

A QB throws for 360-yards and 2-TD’s and we can’t put more than 20-points on the board??

The Defense failed miserably. The Offense failed miserably. Special Teams failed miserably. And, worst of all…the Coaches failed miserably.

Greg Knapp should not be calling plays. The solution to the Raiders’ playcalling problems is on staff already…his name’s Al Saunders.

AL SAUNDERS KNOWS HOW TO CALL A GAME WHILE IT’S IN PROGRESS…and not just on paper.

Of course, that change wouldn’t fix coaching problems 2 and 2(a): Our Defensive “gurus” at HC and DC, whose respective impact seems to be about as invisible as that of Rolando McClain’s.

No more excuses for — or from — Greg Knapp. No more waiting for the O-line to gel, or for Players to all be healthy at the same time. It’s time to put a PROFESSIONAL product on the field, no matter who’s out there on game day.

Oakland Raiders: Damontre Moore, OLB/DE, Texas A&M
The Raiders need to take the best defensive prospect available. Their pass rush has been pitiful, and their cornerbacks are weak. Oakland was horrible at recording sacks or interceptions until the defense came alive in the Atlanta game. Dennis Allen needs to upgrade the talent level of his defense across the board. Moore is the most talented pass-rusher or cornerback available.

Moore has been one of the most consistent pass-rushers in college football this season and is one of the nation’s leaders with 11.5 sacks. He has more sacks in 2012 than Sam Montgomery and Barkevious Mingo combined.

Perhaps even more impressive than that, Moore leads his team with 69 tackles – 11 more than the next closest defender. He has 19 tackles for a loss, two passes broken up, a blocked kick and a forced fumble. Moore is playing traditional defensive end this year given the change in A&M’s coaching staff. The 6-foot-4, 250-pounder needs to add more weight for the NFL if he is going to stay as a 4-3 defensive end.

Moore played joker outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense prior to this season, the same position Von Miller used to play. Moore had 72 tackles, 17.5 tackles for a loss, 8.5 sacks and four forced fumbles last year. He had 5.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and 50 tackles as a freshman in 2010.

Per Walterfootball. Currently leading Sacks in SEC in 2012. WOW this dude looks good.

Eastsidephaggot what part of my posts you don’t get , did i said i wanted Hue gone last year? no , all i said was he’s not here and he went 1-4 when we needed just 2 wins in the last 5 games , or when we needed just punts from SD O , could the guy been doing good right now , that’s anybodies guess, but he’s not here so i prefer not to cry over the spilled milk

AGreed, pass rush in Draft and Pass rush in FA should be priority #1

Mcfadden20 contributes a lot to this blog. He’s fair and he loves the raiders. A welcome addition.

I liked hue. I liked how much he was loyal to al davis. It was hard to see him tossed by mark davis. But he did fail badly down the stretch. Hard to blame a new gm for wanting to bring in his guy.

But I am wavering on DA and his staff. Hard to see where he excels. But it was a good post regarding hall of game coaches and their first years. Only difference is the raiders had been 8-8 the last two seasons. We’re dramatically worse now.

you are one of those guys who keeps on crying about a hot girl that slipped past by them 10 years ago and can’t get over it , seriously get some help , Hue is not here , get over it

Until he switches handles and he will be easy to sniff out.

SILENT TREATMENT FOR ALL PALMER BASHERS PLEASE!

It’s idiotic and obvious baiting. Not real opinions.

  • SR Raider

It is certainly time for DA to step in and show why he was hired. Wasn’t he supposed to be an up-and-coming defensive star? Injuries have decimated the secondary, but surely they can get better play out of the scraps they have

Yes exactly , i wanted Hue to get another chance too but he didn’t so understandably so i am not going to cry here just because we’re not on the pace to match last years win totals, i would give DA 1 more chance too , in which he can grab a better O.co and have better players on the D side

    Steve Corkran ‏@CorkOnTheNFL

Coach Allen said no one on the coaching staff is in jeopardy of losing his job and that his job is to find a way to win games right now.

WHY THE HELL NOT??? YOU ARE FREAKIN INCOMPETENT!!! AND TO TAKE THIS OPTION OFF THE TABLE IS BLIND EGO!!!!!!
    ***********************

100% correct. DOA needs to shoot someone to send a real message. It doesn’t even have to be the right guy. The message NEEDS to be sent. I vote for Hoffman. He in my opinion has been the most useless coaching contributor on staff. He shows no redeeming value to his ongoing existence on the team.

Who your choice for target of the week?

  • mcfadden20.

He should start with canning Knapp right now, let anybody else who have experience in ZBS to work things out

  • mcfadden20.

This ZBS scheme hasn’t been able to get the run game going , but Passing game is alright when Briesel and Smith decide to block their man in front of them , but Knapps play calling needs to go he’s the reason for Palmer’s int, kept dialing up the same plays , like D.co’s wouldn’t figure it out

  • HayesDaze37

Re-assign Knapp as Co-Offensive Coordinator, and let Al Saunders call the plays.
