Grading the Raiders from Ravens game

Here is how beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders (3-6) on their performance in a 55-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens (7-2) on Sunday:

Pass offense

Another prolific stat game for Carson Palmer (29 of 45, 368 yards, 2 TDs). He had a 55-yard touchdown pass to Darrius Heyward-Bey and one of 30 yards to Denarius Moore, and he kept the Raiders moving the ball. But there was also an interception, a lost fumble and another fourth-and-1 where he got stepped on by Mike Brisiel and took a 4-yard sack.

Grade: B

Run offense

Marcel Reece rushed a career-high 13 times for 48 yards, with Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson out with high-ankle sprains. Rookie Jeremy Stewart ran seven times for 22 yards, and the coaching staff has very little confidence in Taiwan Jones. Raiders had no gain of more than 9 yards and averaged 3 yards per carry.

Grade: D-minus

Pass defense

Joe Flacco (21 of 33, 341 yards, 3 TDs, 1 interception) did as he pleased and found the wide open spaces between the hash marks. Michael Huff had an interception at the Baltimore 19, but the offense only got a field goal out of it. Torrey Smith caught touchdown passes of 20 and 47 yards and tight ends Dennis Pitta and Ed Dickson had seven catches for 126 yards.

Grade: F

Run defense

The Raiders took the Doug Martin lesson of the previous week to heart as Ray Rice gained just 35 yards in 13 carries with a long run of 7 yards. Not until Bernard Pierce had a 12-yard run in the second half did Baltimore get a running play in double figures. They gave ground way to easily on Rice’s 7-yard touchdown run.

Grade: B

Special teams
A muffed punt by Phillip Adams led to a Baltimore touchdown and Jacoby Jones ripped off a 105-yard kickoff return to finish the scoring. Sebastian Janikowski converted field goal attempts from 22 and 47 yards and Shane Lechler punted well with a 54.8 yard gross and a 47.6 net.

Grade: D-minus

Coaching

The Raiders secondary looked as if it had never played together before as Flacco passed at will. The Raiders were fooled by a Ravens fake field-goal attempt that resulted in a 7-yard touchdown run by holder Sam Koch. Coming into a difficult road venue, the Raiders didn’t have the look of a team that was prepared to play, and coach Dennis Allen said the responsibility lies with him.

Grade: F

Carson Palmer leads the AFC in passing, and he is on pace (4,841) to break Rich Gannon’s #Raiders record of 4,689 (2002).

Unfortunately, not enough to win games. There’s something rotten in Oakland guys. Coaches? Players? Raider management? All the above? You be the judge.

Hoffman would def be gone next year , along with Knapp and other guys , i don’t have problem with ZBS , but they should bring in some one better to teach it and call plays

  • HayesDaze37

Carson Palmer’s easily responsible for half his Int’s…he lets balls go that he should be holding on to (even if a “bad” play is called at the time). CPalmer has lots of talent…but his mistakes at critical times can’t be blamed on others.

100% correct. DOA needs to shoot someone to send a real message. It doesn’t even have to be the right guy. The message NEEDS to be sent.

The Ravens scored on 8 of their first 10 possessions. You know, you could put me, Koolkell, 666, and a handful of others out there on defense and apparently, it wouldn’t matter. We could go out there and let opponents score basically EVERY time. Nothing to brag about there. That is mind boggling.

  • HayesDaze37

But…give Palmer an OC who can call plays, a RB who can stay healthy, and a Defense that can keep opposing Teams to less than 25-points a game, and he’d be a Pro Bowl, Playoff-Team-leading QB.

Can’t be any worse than what we’ve got right now.

  • tuckrulefool

    Thanks for the input.

While still a rookie I think D0A is confusing “strength” with “pig-headedness”. He is ‘staying the course’ no matter what the conditions on the ground say.

Sorry that’s not leadership, that’s ego. You MUST adapt. That goes for players coaches (and fans for that matter). He is not adapting, or a t aleast not enough to matter.

Couple of (specific) examples that bug me already about him (again based on DOA’s behavior this pres-season/reglar season). (No doubt there are many more just mentioning a couple to get the juices going.)

    1. The whole Tiawan Jones deal.

No real RB options at this point yet you Refuse to give him a legitimate opportunity. This simply makes no sense. If you don’t like the guy, cut him. Dont hide behind the “we don’t trust him” bs. Again, if hes not trustworthy why is he taking up a valuable spot? Al is dead, cant use scholorship fear as an excuse. What bugs me the most here is guys like Evans who fumble repeatedly CLEARLY arent trustworthy (yesterdays punt botch was THE death dagger btw). Yet he is back there.

    2. Smith. Cant rememebr a worse OT. yet he stays there with unproven young talent on the bench. (and please forget the K-nap crap about he needs to know every postion 1st. Can he punt? if not lets keep him out too. jeez.).

    2. Very conservative/almost scared. This is linked in some ways to the above. Before you say “wait he onside kicks, fake puts etc”. Thats not what I am talking about. Im talking about personnel moves, game planning and management. In all 3 areas he plays not to lose vs win. The win vs Jags was a good example. Did Jano need to come out IMMEDIATELY? Not a huge pt esp since we won I’ll admit but its plays like that that show you how he thinks. Nut up son. This week also presented a chance to EXPOSE Baltimore run D. whats he do? NOT EVEN TRY! Explain this to me. If run fails, fine start throwing more. Its as if he was saying I KNOW CP3 can run the no back O and so i’m going there. Even though your D has been (and was once again) BADLY exposed. FAST scoring isn’t good for your D. BAD PLAN.

At this point I just don’t think he’s talented enough (or perhaps not ready) to be a HC. Sorry, but thats what I see.

Going forward, DOA needs to act and act now. Give a55hats the bench that deserve it and let players that havent received a fair shake, a shake.

Guys like Berstrom, Jones, , and yes even Pryor (trick packages, return game, etc) NEED to get out there.

Have some exotic D to confuse the teams that are scouting us each week? USE them Mr Defensive GURU. Yes, there will be risk but dude, smell the java.

    YOU ARE ALREADY AT RISK!

  • HayesDaze37

Well…all those drives that start inside our own 15 let Palmer throw for 300+ yards per game. In fact, they make those games necessary.

    ***********************************************
You could say that about the average QB, what makes the great ones great is the fact that their teams know no matter what the score is and how it’s turning out their QB will give them a chance to win. We they don’t believe that is when you see what we saw yesterday. The rest of teh team loses hope when the score gets a little out of whack. Had Palmer won that TB game coming form that far back to win. You would’ve never seen what happened yesterday, this team would’ve gone iinto Balt. trying like hell to get a win. But once the score got out of whack you saw them let down it’s natural to do so if you don’t think you have the goods.

Palmer has to find a way to get these guys to believe if the continue playing hard and fast that he can bring it home I gaurantee you’ll see this entire change the way they play.

Allen isn’t going anywhere. Firing him would give us 4 coaches in 4 years, not really a recipe for success. I view Allen almost like Romeo Crennel, he’s not good enough to be dealing with both the offense and defense, but he doesn’t have an OC that merits trust that would allow him to focus on the D.

I remember being as shocked as I’ve ever been with the Raiders when I heard they brought back Knapp. It’s not just that he failed before, it’s that he failed in Oakland before, and miserably.

The Raiders are stale. They are not dynamic, they don’t adjust, they don’t put their players in a position to win. The coach’s job is the maximize his players talent. We’re burning through Carson’s arm (when we’re not getting him killed), we have McFadden running through a brick wall and we have receivers who have not been coached on how to run routes. Where the hell are Freddy B and Tim Brown to teach these guys to run routes instead of galloping and running God knows where.

The Raiders’ coaching stuff simply does not put players in a position to win. McFadden struggling to break through the line? Get him out in space like vs. SD! Defense getting burned? Stop running delayed safety blitzes that expose our makeshift secondary!

The real indicator of the season is how bad this team is in the third quarter in seemingly every game. Coaches tweak and adjust and steamroll us, while the Raiders seem content to go with what they came in with and not to make any adjustments. We’re a bad team that is not well coached, the only hope is that DA improve a lot next year, because otherwise, we’re going to be back searching for a new coach…again…

I’m curious myself as to what exactly it is that D.A. has brought thus far to warrant any degree of loyalty from Raiders fans. The product that he is responsible for coaching has been historically bad, in terms of this franchise. As of this moment, what reason does anyone give as to why D.A. should not be fired immediately after this season. I’m sure there will be those that say that he should be given more time to make things work, but I dont believe in that so much. While I do feel that there are scenarios where time can be granted, in this case, I think D.A. has proven one singular thing, and it is that he is NOT the right man to be head coach of this football team. Period. The bottom line is that this team has regressed in EVERY facet of the game since this man took over as head coach. EVERY facet. He has FAILED. There is no other way to put it. With that said, what has D.A. done to warrant one more year?

BHP — You put WAAAAY too much weight on Palmer’s right shoulder right now.

Even with his occasional miscues, Carson Palmer is giving the Raiders the kind of play GM’s and Owners drool over. The ability to put up these kinds of numbers doesn’t just walk in off the street.

The shame in having Carson Palmer right now — just like with guys like Janikowski — is that those numbers are being wasted on what is turning out to be a throw-away year, and maybe more than just this year.

The blame goes all the way around…and it starts right at ReggieMac’s office.

  • http://raiders.com Seymour Bush

I am not saying fire the coaches. I have seen TOOOOO much of that here. But instead of blaming the players, and the players do deserve blame, this coaching staff needs to look at themselves.

The blitz Tarver calls early in the game on a 3rd and 9 was a disaster. He sends both safeties, which is interesting, but they are lined up so far back in the secondary that they have NO HOPE of getting to Flacco. Not only that, now you just took 2 defenders and made them irrelvant. So now we are playing 11 on 9. We’re not good enough to play 11 on 9. We’re not good enough to play 11 on 11.
