Grading the Raiders from Ravens game

Here is how beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders (3-6) on their performance in a 55-20 loss to the Baltimore Ravens (7-2) on Sunday:

Pass offense

Another prolific stat game for Carson Palmer (29 of 45, 368 yards, 2 TDs). He had a 55-yard touchdown pass to Darrius Heyward-Bey and one of 30 yards to Denarius Moore, and he kept the Raiders moving the ball. But there was also an interception, a lost fumble and another fourth-and-1 where he got stepped on by Mike Brisiel and took a 4-yard sack.

Grade: B

Run offense

Marcel Reece rushed a career-high 13 times for 48 yards, with Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson out with high-ankle sprains. Rookie Jeremy Stewart ran seven times for 22 yards, and the coaching staff has very little confidence in Taiwan Jones. Raiders had no gain of more than 9 yards and averaged 3 yards per carry.

Grade: D-minus

Pass defense

Joe Flacco (21 of 33, 341 yards, 3 TDs, 1 interception) did as he pleased and found the wide open spaces between the hash marks. Michael Huff had an interception at the Baltimore 19, but the offense only got a field goal out of it. Torrey Smith caught touchdown passes of 20 and 47 yards and tight ends Dennis Pitta and Ed Dickson had seven catches for 126 yards.

Grade: F

Run defense

The Raiders took the Doug Martin lesson of the previous week to heart as Ray Rice gained just 35 yards in 13 carries with a long run of 7 yards. Not until Bernard Pierce had a 12-yard run in the second half did Baltimore get a running play in double figures. They gave ground way to easily on Rice’s 7-yard touchdown run.

Grade: B

Special teams
A muffed punt by Phillip Adams led to a Baltimore touchdown and Jacoby Jones ripped off a 105-yard kickoff return to finish the scoring. Sebastian Janikowski converted field goal attempts from 22 and 47 yards and Shane Lechler punted well with a 54.8 yard gross and a 47.6 net.

Grade: D-minus

Coaching

The Raiders secondary looked as if it had never played together before as Flacco passed at will. The Raiders were fooled by a Ravens fake field-goal attempt that resulted in a 7-yard touchdown run by holder Sam Koch. Coming into a difficult road venue, the Raiders didn’t have the look of a team that was prepared to play, and coach Dennis Allen said the responsibility lies with him.

Grade: F

    is he a racist?

Raiders can fix run D , but they can’t fix pass D, until they bring guys who can get to pass rush, we didn’t have it last year = bottom 5 D , we don’t have it this year = bottom 5 D

God this taiwan jones rant is getting annoying as Misticthesuperidiot’s Palmer rants, the guy was a 4th or 5th rd choice for a reason for f8k sake , he wasn’t given much chance last year either

    ##################

My problem with Jones is that he’s taking up a roster spot.
    ******************

How is that TJones problem. Sounds more like a mismanagement problem. Practice is NOT live play against a real opponent. TJones may look like crap in practice but may be great in real time. Guess we’ll never know because DOA has decided that he gets no reps. If that’s the case, cut him and bring on an emergency FG holder specialist. You never know when we might need one of them. Get real DOA. Grow a pair and start leading & making better decisions.

I’m curious myself as to what exactly it is that D.A. has brought thus far to warrant any degree of loyalty from Raiders fans. The product that he is responsible for coaching has been historically bad, in terms of this franchise. As of this moment, what reason does anyone give as to why D.A. should not be fired immediately after this season.

Period. The bottom line is that this team has regressed in EVERY facet of the game since this man took over as head coach. EVERY facet. He has FAILED. There is no other way to put it. With that said, what has D.A. done to warrant one more year?

    =============================================

    1) Players cannot be properly developed when you’re constantly whipsawing them between this coach and that coach. New assistants, new philosophy, new playcalls, new everything. The average fan doesn’t understand how much your entire team really starts from zero every time you bring a new coach and staff in.

    2) Al’s quick hook with coaches was part of the reason he wasn’t able to hire anyone decent (except Gruden) during the last two decades of his life. The entire league is watching to see what Reggie does. He fires DA without a darn good (like 0-16 season) cause, and it’s back to us settling for the dregs of the coaching pool.

    3) Reggie and DA came into a horrible, unprecedented scenario. Give them time.

  • RussianRaider

How do you fire a rookie 8-8 coach and go hire this guy??? HOW??
    ———————————————————-
I never thought Hue would stay once we missed the playoffs. With the kind of organizational turnover that Mr. Davis’ death brought, it had to be a full house cleaning. Moreover, recall that Hue was coach and GM (he orchestrated the Palmer trade, remember?) and McKenzie didn’t want a power struggle. I get it the change, it made sense because Hue would have wanted a lot more power than Reggie would give him.

However, for a rookie GM to go with a rookie HC (note that Dennis only had one year experience as a DC in Denver, which itself wasn’t a defensive powerhouse last year), you have to expect that there will be growing pains, and anyone who didn’t expect that had to be deluding themselves. I always thought the Raiders needed to go after someone with more experience because McKenzie was a rookie too, so having a coach who commands respect based on a strong reputation would be critical to establishing credibility with the old Al Davis guys (Kelly, Seymour, Huff etc.)

All of this, however, does not excuse going with such a young coaching staff that has so little experience while simultaneously marginalizing the few veteran coaches on the staff (Al Saunders…when was the last time you even heard his name mentioned?).

This year is done…Raiders will be 5-11 or 6-10 at best (assuming sweeping KC, beating Cleveland and possible wins vs. Carolina and @ San Diego). Next year will be the real test for DA and Reggie when they are truly running “their” team and not Davis/HueJax holdovers. Expect BIG changes.

Biggest knocks agiansthim 3rd quarter failure week after week

hiring greg knapp then allowing knapp to change line schemes in m wee 6

defensive collapse and he is a defensive specialist

for anyone holding the notion that he cant be fired because its his first year there are two things you must remember

    1. plenty of coaches have been one and done hu jack, pete carroll, jom mora jr and so on, it happens more often than people think

    2. big macks job and rep are on the line, i doubt he sits by and watches all his hard work over the years building himself into this postilion go out the window because he made a bad choice as his first coach.

this is the nfl and people will not get the beneifit of the doubt in a results oriented business.

    ————————————————————
I disagree. I think a veteran coach (not necessarily a veteran HC mind you, but even a veteran DC or OC), perhaps like Joe Philbin, who came from Green Bay or otherwise had a relationship with Reggie, would have been a good choice. I don’t know enough (no one on this board does) about evaluating coaches to make a judgment, my point is that the growing pains would be exacerbated by having a rookie coach and rookie GM.

Again, I’m not on the “run the bums out” train with Reggie and DA, but from an organizational standpoint, I don’t think DA has credibility with the players because he’s a young and inexperienced guy and is clearly not holding guys accountable (except Taiwan Jones, for some reason).

We’re not dynamic, we don’t respond well. A prime example is this: Willie Smith is bad. Bergstrom may or may not be better, but why oh why don’t we have someone like a TE help out on his side? It’s been 6 games of leaving Smith to fend for himself against guys who are literally steamrolling him out there. These are adjustments a veteran coach makes, but as it stands, we’re just rebuilding…again…

Period. The bottom line is that this team has regressed in EVERY facet of the game since this man took over as head coach. EVERY facet. He has FAILED. There is no other way to put it. With that said, what has D.A. done to warrant one more year?

    =============================================

On point 1, we can look at what Indy has done. They have a 1st yr. coach with a 1st yr. QB and 4 lineman out. In fact they are being coached by the FILL IN coach FOR the 1st yr. HC and they’re 6-3.

On point 2 i agree, which is why i didn’t even want Cable ousted..then Hue. Sick of having a new HC every dang year.

On point 3 i don’t agree this is an unprecedented bad situation. That’s a tuff sell statement when the team inherited was one defensive stop from winning the division and remains bascially the same team. There are reasons why everyone says it was a “mirage” etc. but it was what it was.

That being said, I am not for firing DA due to your point # 2. I don’t think he deserves it cuz the team is regressing to historically awful proportions. This is NOT what we were told to expect. We were told we would “get better every day”.

    We’re getting worse…much worse.

I’m sure there will be those that say that he should be given more time to make things work, but I dont believe in that so much. While I do feel that there are scenarios where time can be granted, in this case, I think D.A. has proven one singular thing, and it is that he is NOT the right man to be head coach of this football team. Exactly my point! If you’re so hard core that you fire Hue jackson wouldn’t you get someone clearly better suited than he is. I mean that coach went 8-8 in his rookie season and was FIRED! Unless you have someone in mind who is definitely better, why do it?

When Reg fired Hue I was absolutely sure he had someone already in mind who was a lock to do a better job. Only to find out he had no one in particular at all but goes on a coach search and comes up with this gem……..lol

Maybe Palmer can field punts. We need one of those…
