Numerous players not practicing, including McFadden

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, November 14th, 2012 at 11:54 am in Oakland Raiders.

Running back Darren McFadden is among a handful of starters not at practice today, though tight end Brandon Myers is back on the field only three days after he suffered his second concussion of the season.
McFadden and primary backup Mike Goodson are not practicing today as a result of the high-ankle sprains they suffered against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 10 days ago. It’s likely that coach Dennis Allen will wait until Friday before deciding whether either can play this Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.
In the interim, Taiwan Jones, Jeremy Stewart and Marcel Reece are taking snaps at running back, as they did last week during the absence of McFadden and Goodson. All three played against the Ravens.
A Yahoo Sports report said there’s a chance that McFadden will play Sunday. Soon thereafter, the same site said McFadden is “iffy” for Sunday.
It says here, if McFadden isn’t able to practice at all this week, then he isn’t playing Sunday. Also, it’s a long way from being in a walking boot Monday to playing in a game six days later.

– Myers’ return bodes well for his playing Sunday. We won’t know until after Allen addressed the media whether Myers passed all the league-mandated tests for players that suffer a concussion.
Players aren’t allowed to participate in full-contact drills or play in games until they are cleared by a doctor.
Cornerback Michael Huff also is well enough to practice today despite suffering a calf injury against the Ravens.

– Recently signed linebacker Omar Gaither is at practice today. He is wearing No. 53 and taking part in all the drills.

– Defensive tackle Richard Seymour, strong safety Tyvon Branch and free safety Matt Giordano also aren’t practicing today.
Seymour missed practice all last week and didn’t play against the Ravens because of knee and hamstring issues. Branch (neck) and Giordano (concussion) suffered injuries against the Ravens.

– At one point today, Allen was quite hands on with the defense as it went through a full-unit drill. He said Monday that he has been pretty involved with the defense all along.
“I’ve been very involved in what we do game-planning-wise defensively,” Allen said. “But I’ll look at any avenue, or anything we need to do, that gives us a chance and helps us win football games.”
A short time later, Allen watched the offense go through its paces.

– Khalif Barnes is at practice today and working toward a return to the starting lineup at right offensive tackle.
Barnes missed the past seven games while recovering from a groin injury that required surgery. Allen said he expects Barnes to reclaim his spot against the Saints.
Willie Smith started the past seven games. Rookie Tony Bergstrom replaced Smith for 15 plays against the Ravens.

Should be interesting to look up…did the Donks win after the 59-14 schalacking we gave them in 2010? Or, were they that 1 from a 5-1 record?

  22. mcfadden20. Says:

WOW might as well concede the game already , no depth at secondary and no pass rush , we’re looking at 60 points by Saints offense and full week of Mistics Palmer rants, can we just fast forward to our next week

    Ray Armstrong, SS, Miami

Armstrong is one of the biggest safeties in the business, blessed with incredible size at 6′4” and 215 pounds. Not surprisingly, he is a huge hitter and he strikes fear into any receiver venturing to come across the middle. Armstrong has great speed for his size, generally running around a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash and he has been clocked as fast as 4.44 from that distance. The junior is solid against the run when Miami stacks the line of scrimmage and is decent in pass coverage, although he will want to improve in that area as he heads to the next level.
Armstrong comes with a minor red flag, in that he had been suspended from the team earlier this year due to a questionable relationship with the owner of a PR firm (possible violation of NCAA rules). The Sanford, FL native has since been reinstated, but he has played in just six games with one start in 2011, so his stats are irrelevant. As a freshman in 2009, though, he played in 10 games and last season he had 79 tackles and three interceptions. Thanks to his NFL-esque frame and great potential,

Armstrong could be an early third-round selection if he bolts for the 2012 draft.

  125. KoolKell Says:

Welcome to the Start of the 2013 Oakland Raiders Season

Captain Jack Rack ‘em Levy – Nov 13, 2012

Oh how restless the crew of the Raider Galleon has gotten the past decade, and I feel the mates are plotting a mutiny with all the scuttlebutt I overhear on deck. By the way, you MAY need a ‘nautical/Pirate dictionary’ for much of this… but hey, thank goodness for Google, right?

Listen…errrrr…..Hear Ye, Hear Ye (there, that’s better) mateys and wenches! It’s time for quarters and reading of the Plan of the Week – P.O.W. – as well as the watch schedule, and we’ll try to dispel some of the same scuttlebutt running rampant amongst the deck plates…

First off, yes – I agree that ‘First Mate’ Knapp needs to walk the plank, but AFTER his keelhauling (since we no longer can water-board, might as well use the tried and true methods, shall we?) Unfortunately this sentence dispensed by the Captain’s Mast of Raider Nation will most likely take place AFTER this season, so those wishing ‘Bounty justice’ will need to stand fast…

Now, let’s also postulate IF First Mate Knapp gets a reprieve from the Admiralty’s Staff and is retained, it’s because the Admiralty themselves (that would be the Raiders front office and Fleet Admiral McKenzie) has briefed the King himself (read – Mark Davis) who knew in advance this re-fit was going to take several years, hence declaration orders of combat for next several years. To this, we’ll see…

Second, and we went over this during last week’s P.O.W., ‘Admiral’ McKenzie is still trying to bring the Galleon into the ‘steam age’ from ‘sailing age’ constraints and practices implemented under the stewardship of King AND Fleet Admiral Al Davis, so this process will NOT be a ‘quick fix.’ No sir mates and wenches, this yard period will last through 2012 and into 2013… have no far-flung thoughts otherwise. Nope, McKenzie is NOT the problem… and there are those that want to ‘blow him out’ after less than one year on the job. Ummmmmmmmmm… can you say STUUUUUPID? He was brought on-board the organization to King (Mark) Davis through the promptings of John Madden, Ken Herock and Ron Wolf, and you think HE is the problem? Tsk tsk tsk… Honestly, we won’t be able to judge his work for at least three years… and RMac does have a five year contract.

Third, those SCREAMING at the tops of their lungs to throw Operations Officer Carson Palmer into the brig need to check themselves… are you freaking serious? Let me put this into terms even knuckle-dragging boatswains and riggers can understand: no running game or threat of a running game gives the defense all the power to UNLOAD on Palmer… and what has Palmer done KNOWING he has no running option? He’s done nothing but play his ARSE off is all, thank you. Also remember he’s playing behind a leaky offensive line giving defenders the chance to knock him silly, and he STILL stands in there delivering against four, five even six defensive backs? At a record-breaking pace no less? You may need to rethink that one.

/articleimages/pryorprimetime.jpgThere are a few poor souls who are extolling the ‘Play Pryor Now’ agenda, as they believe he is the only true salvation enabling wins in 2012, thinking we couldn’t do any worse. Some have even cited Pryor’s pre-season stats: 19-32, 251yds passing (59.4% when 75% is considered exceptional with a 7.8 yards/attempt avg.) for two touchdowns, one interception and a 92.1% QBR. He also rushed for 121yds on 14 carries (8.6yd/carry avg.) and one touchdown. Those emphatically citing these stats as warrant for a look before the 2013 draft need to remember Pryor was playing against scrub defenders, many presently relegated to bagging groceries at the super market or doing oil-changes at Jiffy Lube. Hey, I respect those having this opinion, but I’m saying it’s waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off base… trust me.

But wait you clamor, Pryor has SPEED… he can RUN… he is DANGEROUS. While all these traits may be true, his running may be for his life, and he still doesn’t know the playbook to an adequate degree or else he’d be suited up and not on the inactive list as he’s been for all of 2012’s games. Those stating that Palmer is an interception machine, I’ll ask you this: Do you REALLY wanna see some interceptions for show? A Parrrrrrrrrrrrr-taaaaaaaaaaaaaay? Sure, let’s go there, since the defenders most likely would still Tee off on Pryor, and with those disguised coverage’s and blitzes that our rookie certainly can see since he’s such a polished professional (dripping with sarcasm in case you didn’t catch it), you really think you’re NOT going to see more picks? Let Pryor go in there and you’ll see a boatload of interceptions occurring so often and so fast, you’d be SCREAMING for Palmer to be put back in PRONTO!

And don’t even start talking about Matt Leinart playing because ‘Pretty Boy’ is a noodle-armed joke compared to Palmer whose sole purpose is clipboard carrying caretaker, a job he’s been doing quite well to date. Perhaps he performs another role on the team – pizza-order coordinator and phone dialer; talent-scout for local ladies of ill repute on road trips or possibly other ‘really important jobs.’ Ummmmmmmmmm….No. No sir… not time for Pryor or Leinart yet. Will it be this year? Only the organization knows… you can look to see if Pryor is ever on the ‘active’ list as an indicator…

In case you haven’t figured it out already, this is a major rebuild Raider Nation, so get in, buckle up, hang on, grab the Tums or Pepto Bismol, kiss the spouse and kick the dog (just kidding on the last one)…

AND SHUT THE HELL UP because this one – righting wrongs, paying the piper and conducting damage control, combating the flooding, fighting the fires as well as fixing all other impairments on-board the Raider Galleon – is going to last a LOT longer than expected. Well longer than You, I or we expected anyway. I do believe Mark Davis i.e. King Mark was brought on-board with this plan from the get-go, otherwise why would he buy off on it? Do you think he enjoyed watching the debacle unfold on the field the last two weeks? Or for many of our games this year aside from the jubilation of wins over Pittsburgh, Jacksonville and Kansas City, any of those which wouldn’t be a win by the way if it wasn’t for the quarterback of (alleged) espoused ill-repute (pffffffffffffffffffffffft) cited above?

/articleimages/chuckysnowjobpic.jpgAlso, while we’re discussing ‘pipe dreams,’ those clamoring for the return of Chuckie need sit back in their seats as well. Let’s give you the short version, shall we? Gruden did turn things around with the team, going 8-8 twice before the Raiders finally took traction and starting winning decisively. For those with a short memory (the Captain isn’t one of them), ‘Scowl Face’ had a STRONG VETERAN TEAM for the most part, accepting of Gruden’s (as well as faithful Lieutenant and overbearing task-master Rich Gannon’s) driving policies and incantations. However, with a primarily YOUNG SQUAD as he had in Tampa, Jon didn’t fare well with the faux Pirates and was unceremoniously drummed out of town because of it… that, and an upsetting loss to the Raiders in December 2008 to seal his fate. Sooooo…

It’s become self-evident and quite obvious we need a REAL Offensive Coordinator and some major help player-wise on Defense (especially), the offensive line as well as key play-makers in special teams (starting with coaching there, too) and backups. So having said this, welcome to the start of the 2013 season with an EXTENDED Pre-season, i.e. the seven remaining games this year and the follow-on draft/OTAs/camps and the regular pre-season of 2013 next year. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist or M.I.T. graduate to figure out attaining an even .500 record would entail winning five of the next seven games, something unlikely to happen. Impossible? No, but as stated unlikely, considering tough games lie ahead with the Saints and Broncos at home, as well as the Bengals and Chargers away.

Finally, let’s end this week’s piece on a high note. Sunday was Veteran’s Day, with the Captain wishing to send out his best ‘Old Navy Salt’ thanks to all fellow veterans, past and present who’ve served with our armed forces. I’m a retired and proud Navy Chief (only time I’ll accept being called a ‘Chief’ in context with a Raider article) who continues to serve with our Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen presently; I humbly salute ALL men and women of our services, along with the civilians who support their efforts as well as their spouses who stand with their loved ones, alongside or many times separated by thousands of miles.

/articleimages/veteransdaygatheringgtmo.jpgFurther, I salute the efforts of the DC Metro Raider Boosters along with the York, Pennsylvania Boosters in their Veteran’s Day celebrations this past weekend in the Baltimore area in conjunction with the game. Three cheers for Peggy Holmes and “Wheezie” Boylan and their respective clubs’ efforts, keeping up the Raider Booster clubs’ service and dedication to all of Raider Nation previously evident during events sponsored by the Atlanta Raider Boosters as well as the South Florida Raider Boosters earlier this year. BRAVO!

Until next week when the Saints come marching into the Black Hole as we give a ‘wake-up call’ to our Silver and Black clad warriors and a gnarly and salty “YAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!” given from your Captain.

I’m pretty sure Mistic just called into a Chicago sports radio talk show. This guy called in said that Cutler was the reason for the Bears offensive problems because he is always trying to be the hero. He also said that Campbell is going to be very successful this weak against the 49ers. He was also black.

  169. LA to TheBay Says:

Briesel has been a big time letdown.

But the O line problems go way deeper than any one guy. We’ve got Cooper playing a position he never has before, Wiz playing a position he’s not as good at, a scrub revolving door at RT and Veldheer, who has only been ok thus far.

Some of these guys are zone guys, some power and they don’t have enough experience playing together with one scheme.

We sucked at zone, incorporated more power, now are going more power than zone and these guys are probably confused and poorly coached.

I think we need more help elsewhere and if there is an elite pass rusher to be had, get him.

    ——————————————-

Oakland Raiders: Damontre Moore, OLB/DE, Texas A&M
The Raiders need to take the best defensive prospect available. Their pass rush has been pitiful, and their cornerbacks are weak. Oakland was horrible at recording sacks or interceptions until the defense came alive in the Atlanta game. Dennis Allen needs to upgrade the talent level of his defense across the board. Moore is the most talented pass-rusher or cornerback available.

Moore has been one of the most consistent pass-rushers in college football this season and is one of the nation’s leaders with 11.5 sacks. He has more sacks in 2012 than Sam Montgomery and Barkevious Mingo combined.

Perhaps even more impressive than that, Moore leads his team with 69 tackles – 11 more than the next closest defender. He has 19 tackles for a loss, two passes broken up, a blocked kick and a forced fumble. Moore is playing traditional defensive end this year given the change in A&M’s coaching staff. The 6-foot-4, 250-pounder needs to add more weight for the NFL if he is going to stay as a 4-3 defensive end.

Moore played joker outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense prior to this season, the same position Von Miller used to play. Moore had 72 tackles, 17.5 tackles for a loss, 8.5 sacks and four forced fumbles last year. He had 5.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and 50 tackles as a freshman in 2010.

great minds think alike, #1 WR will only come from FA, drafted kids take awhile to show their potential , not sure Streeter can step upto become #1 next year , but #2 seems like a really good possibility.

This is why Palmer will still be the QB next year, there are too many positions that need an upgrade. Might as well keep the QB who is playing pretty well. The only way Palmer is not our QB is if Reggie drafts a rookie and hecuts Palmer for salary cap reasons, or if Pryor beats him out.

  276. LA to TheBay Says:

DMC can’t run in a zone system. His fault for not being able to make the 2nd and 3rd reads necessary to succeed in said scheme. Coaches’ fault for knowing that and still forcing the scheme.

    Oh well.

we will def upgrade all those positions on the Oline and will find a good rb for ZBS, just saying that it won’t require a lot of money for those positions and can be found in late draft picks, just the WR position will have to be taken care of in FA

  282. LA to TheBay Says:

I’d just like to see Palmer play with run support. Passing 25-35 times per game with play action being more of a threat.

Took a good thing from past years and wrecked it. The Raiders were able to run the ball well 07, 08, 09, 10, 11. It was about the only thing we could do well.

Our O Line was one of the best in the league.

So naturally, we scrapped all that in favor of…. 3-6? Greg Knapp? Zone blocking?

Zone blocking is for teams without a DMC. For plug and play guys. Arian Foster was a plug and play guy that has become a star, like a lot of other guys that shined in that system.

    It’s not a bad system.

But when you have road graders and a one cut, one read powerful, lightning fast RB… why change?

Looks like this place DID get cleaned up. And they left my post comparing Jamista Clown to guys like Koresh. See there IS a God. He just hates judgmental, thieving, lying, hateful, ignorant morons. In other words the conservatives.

Peymour make s a statement like its fact and then says “I bet it’s close” in the last 4 games only though…. haha

  288. mcfadden20. Says:

Brendan Albert is the only big time ZBS play that will be available in FA, but he will ask for a lot of money , looks like we will go Draft route

  289. Seymour Bush Says:

Jamista I was almost hoping that Rob-me was going to win just so you could FINALLY claim to get ONE THING, that’s right ONE THING RIGHT. But no, not meant to be. Still batting .000 on everything in your pathetic existence.

But there is a lesson for the rest of us: whatever Jamista Clown says or advocates, DO THE OPPOSITE!!! If Jamista wants the Browns, BET THE FARM on whoever they are playing! What you will find is doors open, a rainbow emerges, and life couldn’t be better. It’s worked for me for years!!

Again, one of the major aspects of the zone systems is you don’t need a lot of money or high draft choices tied up in either Olinmen or RB’s.

I bet Jon Gruden would love to buy a stake in the team .. the Raiders.. He will choose his new GM.. or become the President/ GM himself.. and work with MARK.

He will be the new AL and get us back on track. Bring back romo and GANNON as coaches.. or in some way.

    ======

    And then…you woke up?

  292. mcfadden20. Says:

The other guy we might try out is Winston Justice RT

This is why i like the scheme in the long run with better O.co and assistant coaches, we should be able to find C, RG, RT, RB in the Draft

  294. LA to TheBay Says:

I like the enthusiasm, but the idea of starting a bunch of late round rookies at that many positions seems unrealistic.

I expect us to be major players in day 2+ free agency in the offseason.

Fun day in here. Greek and Roman entymology, history, racism, politics, and we even managed to squeeze in some Raider football.

    I’m out, Nation. Be good.

One other site list these guys as UFAs

Not sure how accurate it is but seems like a good list, not many game changers though

mcfadden20. Says: we will def upgrade all those positions on the Oline and will find a good rb for ZBS, just saying that it won’t require a lot of money for those positions and can be found in late draft picks, just the WR position will have to be taken care of in FA

I know. What I’m saying is it will require money, ZBS or not. Was it Cable that said ‘Power, Zone, doesn’t matter. We’re looking for football players’. Willie Smith didn’t require a lot of money if you get my drift. Briesel did, so you gotta be smart, too.

dennis allen is in over his head with this coaching thing. he and knapp should get fired. let saunders run the offense.

  298. dcraiderfan Says:

Hey Mark you should have kept Hue Jackson!!!! Now look at this team they gave up on Allen and Spuds!! What a loser you have in the front office!!
