Raiders lose one linebacker, add another
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, November 14th, 2012 at 10:34 am in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders on Wednesday placed linebacker Travis Goethel on season-ending injured reserve as a result of the left knee injury he suffered against the Baltimore Ravens.
They signed veteran linebacker Omar Gaither to take Goethel’s place on the 53-man roster. Gaither will wear No. 53.
Gaither started 40 games for the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers.
Gaither was one of four players worked out by the Raiders on Tuesday, the regular players’ off day: linebackers Quan Sturdivant, Scott McKillop and Gaither and safety Tyrone Culver.
Gaither, 28, is 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds. He is expected to play on special teams and backup linebacker, along with Aaron Curry and Keenan Clayton. He has experience as a middle linebacker.

I don’t see RGIII as a scrambling QB. Is he a dual threat? Of course. Can he scramble? For sure! But his first instinct is to stay in the pocket and he’s pretty good at it. Making something out of a bust play is one thing, running around the backfield play after play is another.

The best “scrambling” QB I ever saw was Randall. He could just play. Running, passing, he could do it all. He never won that ring, but it doesnt always come down to one man when we’re talking about championships. On the flip, QBs have rings that they didnt contribute that greatly too. Sometimes the best players arent on the best teams, and dont get the rings. Just because a player never got a ring doesnt mean he wasnt capable of getting one based off his ability, just means it didnt happen. And just because a player does have a ring, it doesnt mean he would have been able to accomplish the same thing with another team.

Steve McNair was an outstanding talent and was a eyelash away from winning. You caqn also add Rich Gannon to the list as a running QB it took him 8-10 years before he became what many thought was a great QB.
Stop acting as if Cam is hopeless he is far from it. Vick’s issue is his size it may be his undoing.

66- I do not “want” to trade him however if Reggie works a good deal, I would not mind. You know Larry is on management to get a QB or trade him and AZ had great luck last time with Warner. I live here and people would trade for CP in a second, not that it means anything

Another one. Marino was my favorite QB as a kid growing up in the 80s. Even if you didnt like the Dolphins, it was always entertaining watching him throw the ball around. Was crazy sometimes watching a ball come off of another human beings hands like that.

You too, huh? Trying to throw the ball as hard as Marino, messed my shoulder up pretty bad when I was younger. Had no clue what I was doing. Just thought I was doing it right. Now I realize and understand better how there are so many QBs that never really learned how to throw correctly.

Sean Porter is tough. Hes a little light, but at least he knows how to wrap up and tackle. I think he’s gonna be awesome in pass rushing situations though cause he can fly. One of the fastest LBs Ive seen this season. Im interested in seeing what his 40 is going to be. Not that I put much stock in the 40 100%, but I do know that it makes a difference to some teams on whether a guy goes in the 1st or 3rd. I like Porter though.

Oakland Raiders fall further in AP’s power rankings

The Raiders’ latest defensive meltdown didn’t escape notice of the 12 voters who determine the Associated Press Pro32 NFL power rankings.
Sunday’s 55-20 thrashing at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens dropped the Raiders three spots to No. 30 in the poll, released Tuesday.
The Raiders have been outscored 97-52 the past two weeks.
Only the Kansas City Chiefs (31) and the Jacksonville Jaguars (32) are ranked below the Raiders, who beat both teams this season for two of their three wins.
The No. 27 Buffalo Bills and No. 29 Cleveland Browns vaulted over the Raiders. The Bills lost 37-31 at New England, and the Browns were idle.
The Houston Texans replaced the Atlanta Falcons as the top-ranked team.
Here are the voters’ comments on the Raiders after Week 10, as provided by the AP (voter affiliation and ranking in parentheses):
Chris Berman (ESPN, 30) — Haven’t allowed back-to-back point totals like this since before Al Davis.
Clifton Brown (Sporting News, 31) — Defense has yielded more than 40 points the past two weeks.
Cris Collinsworth (NBC Sports, 28) — Comment unavailable
Rich Gannon (CBS Sports/SiriusXM NFL Radio, 31) — The defense has been embarrassing the last few weeks, and I’m trying to be nice as a former Raider.
Bob Glauber (Newsday, 29) — Raiders’ awful defense at it again. They’ve given up a combined 97 points the last two games. Don’t imagine things will get much better
against the resurgent Saints.
Rick Gosselin (Dallas Morning News, 28) — Raiders QB Carson Palmer has thrown an interception in five consecutive games for the fading Raiders.
Clark Judge (CBSSports.com, 28) — I’m not sure which has more holes in need of repair: The Nimitz Freeway or the middle of the Oakland defense.
Ira Kaufman (Tampa Tribune, 30) — This is the worst defense in the NFL right now — accept no substitutes.
Pat Kirwan (SiriusXM NFL Radio/CBSSports.com, 29) — Back in September, I said the team had no depth because of the salary cap purge and the mistakes in talent evaluation over the years. Now injuries have too many good players on the sideline.
John Lynch (Fox Sports, 29) — The Raiders have given up 97 points in the last two games. Enough said!
Alex Marvez (Foxsports.com, 30) — Yes, things actually can get worse for a Raiders squad that has surrendered 97 points and 934 yards in the past two games. The surging New Orleans Saints roll into town for a Sunday matchup.
Dan Pompei (Chicago Tribune, 29) — Coach Dennis Allen is a defensive expert, but the Raiders have allowed at least 40 points in two straight games.

Duds
Mike Brisiel – RG. It has been said that now Al Davis is gone there are no more scholarships in Oakland. If so, why is Mike Brisiel getting snaps? He struggles to run block, gives up constant pressure (as he did in this game), and was called for at least four penalties. One was a false on first and goal from the Ravens five yard line, and there is no excuse for a pre-snap penalties down there. Another was a hold that negated a five yard run on first down. He also sacked his own quarterback by stepping on him straight off the snap. Give me Tony Bergstrom or Lucas Nix, how much worse could those promising rookies be?
Willie Smith – RT. I’m tired of saying it, I really, really am. Next home game I’m going down to fetch John Vella and suit him up. He is only 62. Smith has given up more pressures than that this year.
/articleimages/giordano-allen.jpgMatt Giordano – FS. I have always liked Giordano’s effort level, but he remains a liability in pass coverage. On the first touchdown pass to Torrey Smith, he bit on an underneath route when he had responsibility deep, and Smith went uncovered for the score. It may have looked like Tyvon Branch was responsible, but it wasn’t his man, and had come across from the other side of the field. There were more, but this play is symptomatic of Giordano’s shortcomings. He is a backup player being asked to start, and he just can’t get it done.
Tommy Kelly – DT. Two assisted tackles, no pressure, and nothing else to add. Right now, Kelly is a liability to this team, and his level of play has just fallen off a cliff this year.
Philip Wheeler – LB. The defensive MVP for the Raiders in the first half of the season was dreadful in this game. He has looked great in coverage all year, but was torn to pieces by the Ravens, allowing eight receptions on eight targets for 88 yards. An all round bad day for Wheeler, who did little of note.
The entire Coaching Staff – Ten penalties for 105 yards, the quarterback and center unable to make a clean exchange on key plays, giving up two touchdowns on special teams (and a muffed punt which was lost). Everything that could have gone wrong did, and this team struggled to play base level football. Apart from some success in the run defense, this team was just shocking.
Joe Flacco read the defense like a book on passing downs, and any blitzing resulted in him completing a pass directly to the area that had just been vacated by the blitzer/blitzers.
Special teams gave up a touchdown on a kick off return, a touchdown to a fake field goal, and muffed a punt that lost possession deep in Raider territory. It was a return to the comedy of errors that we saw earlier in the season.
Ultimately Dennis Allen is responsible for it all, as the staff were his choices. I’m not calling for Dennis Allen’s head right now, but some changes need to be made and people held accountable.
Baltimore Ravens – Only an entirely classless organisation runs a fake field goal when they are 24 points up deep in the second half. They may have won, but there is an unwritten rule in the NFL that you don’t run up the score to embarrass teams you have already beaten. No class in the way they did that, and the Raiders won’t forget it.
The Ravens may have won this game by some way in the end, but Oakland made it easy for them with some bad play and awful coaching. When Dennis Allen said that the performance was unacceptable, he was right. The team can’t continue like this, and a way has to be found to improve things.
Over to you Dennis…

Ray Armstrong, SS, Miami
Armstrong is one of the biggest safeties in the business, blessed with incredible size at 6′4” and 215 pounds. Not surprisingly, he is a huge hitter and he strikes fear into any receiver venturing to come across the middle. Armstrong has great speed for his size, generally running around a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash and he has been clocked as fast as 4.44 from that distance. The junior is solid against the run when Miami stacks the line of scrimmage and is decent in pass coverage, although he will want to improve in that area as he heads to the next level.
Armstrong comes with a minor red flag, in that he had been suspended from the team earlier this year due to a questionable relationship with the owner of a PR firm (possible violation of NCAA rules). The Sanford, FL native has since been reinstated, but he has played in just six games with one start in 2011, so his stats are irrelevant. As a freshman in 2009, though, he played in 10 games and last season he had 79 tackles and three interceptions. Thanks to his NFL-esque frame and great potential,
Armstrong could be an early third-round selection if he bolts for the 2012 draft.

KoolKell, I was at that game in Baltimore and it was down right embarrasing. There were between 6000 to 7000 Raider fans at that game and it seems like all of the Baltimore fans were laughing at us all day. I was a Raider fan since 1969 and this was really ugly.
November 14th, 2012 at 2:30 pm
And that should be the end of Goethels injury plaqued career with the Raiders.
McK should try and trade RoMac to some team for a 3rd or 4th rounder beofre the draft.
Also, he should see what he can get for DMC. If he can get a 2nd and a 4th in this years draft and then a 2nd in next years draft, he should really look into dealing DMC. If he can get a late 1st and 3rd for DMC in this years draft, that would be ideal.
Seymour will probably retire and Kelly will probably be cut.
