Branch practiced, but status up in the air

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, November 16th, 2012 at 1:31 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Whether Mike Mitchell makes his first start at strong safety won’t be determined until game day as Tyvon Branch emerged from the locker room after warm-ups and drills and was a limited participant in practice Friday.

Branch, who has started 57 consecutive games, made it to the field after the media window had closed, and coach Dennis Allen was non-specific about how much he was able to do.

Asked if Branch’s participation was a big step forward, Allen said, “It’s a better step forward. It’s better than he didn’t practice.’’

Allen said Branch would be a game-time decision, and Branch, moving deliberately in the Raiders locker room, said, “I’m not sure yet, man. It’s a day-to-day thing right now.’’

Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey did not practice with a hamstring strain and would also be a game-time decision, Allen said.

Running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson (high ankle sprains) and defensive tackle Richard Seymour (hamstring) were all ruled out of the Seattle game.

Mitchell, who has opened seven games in nickel packages but hasn’t started in the base defense, is pulling for Branch but at the same time wants to show what he can do as a starter.

It’s a big challenge in that the New Orleans offense features tight Jimmy Graham, a 6-foot-7 former basketball player out of Miami who has 45 receptions for 533 yards and seven touchdowns and presents a nightmare matchup because he’s too big for defensive backs and too fast for linebackers.

“I haven’t seen anyone get very physical with him yet, as far as DBs,’’ Mitchell said. “Most guys are too small, and they shy away from him. She just bodies them. I’m curious to see how he’s going to handle more of a physical, skill-position guy checking him at the line.’’

Taken in the second round of the 2009 draft, Mitchell remains eager to validate the decision by Al Davis to select him, a choice that astonished some draft analysts who considered him a late-round pick or potential undrafted free agent.

Mitchell has battled injuries at times, played in different defensive packages and on special teams, and looks forward to his first crack at being a full-time player. The presence of Branch, drafted the previous year and a starter for the last 57 games, has kept Mitchell in a supporting role.

“I’m just so ready to be done with this, to show what I can do,’’ Mitchell said. “I’m tired — I feel like I’ve been held back, held back, held back. So if I get the opportunity I just want to go play good football and show the abilities God has blessed me with.’’

Mitchell plays with emotion and reckless abandon. He’s known as a “friendly fire’’ threat among teammates, and Allen is hoping to see Mitchell dial it back just a bit when necessary.

“He’s a very passionate player, he works extremely hard, he loves the game,’’ Allen said. “Sometimes you’ve just got to slow his heartbeat down a little bit and get him to calm down. It’s important to him, and that’s what I like about him.’’

– Allen said Derek Hagan would be the starter if Heyward-Bey can’t play, but that Juron Criner and Rod Streater would also see action along with starter Denarius Moore.

– Defensive line coach Terrell Williams is at the funeral of his son, Tyson, in Florida and is expected to return to the team Monday, Allen said.

Tyson Williams died at age 4 on Nov. 9 at Oakland Children’s Hospital from what the team called a “sudden and unexpected illness.’’

It was a situation for which there was no manual or guide for a rookie head coach.

“You try to keep everybody informed of what’s going on and be there for them in case they need something,’’ Allen said. “You can’t help but have emotions about that. It was a tough situation.’’

Proof that total numbers of tackles is a bit overrated. The Raiders have more tackles this season than the Bears do. Wheeler has more tackles than both Urlacher and Lance Briggs.

Well. ONE thing that I’m looking forward to with McK as GM is more consistency when it comes to drafting solid and good FOOTBALL players.

Other than that, not looking forward to anything with this team for another 3 years IF that.

If Davis, McK, DA want to rebuild then they might as well start looking to get as many picks as they can by trading DMC now before this years draft instead of next year.

I think the Jets are desperate for play makers and offfenive weapons and I think they would give up a 1st and 3rd for DMC after this season, especially if Tannenbaum and Ryan stay. They will probably go after another QB though.

If Allen doesn’t make a drastic change to the coaching staff in the next TWO weeks, he should be canned. And Reggie needs to step in inside the next two weeks and force drastic coaching change, otherwise he should be canned.

Reggie is safe, wont be canned, and im okay with him for 2-3 years, not enthused, but okay. But it’s reprehensible if he doesnt step in and force change if the HC refuses to make those drastic coaching/schematic changes in the next 1-2 weeks.

If we get blown apart again this week, the change MUST happen immediately.

I knew something was fishy when Reggie fired all these scouts and long time guys and brought in that guy Joey Clicksdale to be director of football operations.

Also thought it was fishy the way Raiders didnt even interview another GM.. Mark was just told by Madden and Ron wolf basically what to do.

Why was Wolf so insistant on Reggie, was it maybe so his son Eliot could get a promotion?

I was shocked watching the baltimore game last week and heard the commentators say the most points given up since the PRE AL ERA

    Also, on the other debate…

total tackles is not a good stat, indication. whomever is saying that total tackles is a sign of a good player or a good defense is wrong. LB tackles means the DL is getting out-muscled too much. and SS/FS tackles means the LBs are blowing their assignments or cant shed blocks.

In fact, ILB total tackles is ok. But when you’re leading tacklers are OLBs thats even worse.

  18. arkraider Says:

Thanks for the good news, Jerry! I’m sure glad that McFadden, Goodson and Seymour were all ruled out for the Seattle game! Whew! Good, cause we’re gonna need those guys for the New Orleans game! I’m sure glad they weren’t ruled out for it.

umm. kinda. but this is the first time i’ve ever heard guys saying the guy making all the tackles sucks BECAUSE he’s making so many tackles. this laughable.

it’s simple. look at the tackle totals of all-pros. making tackles is a linebacker’s JOB!

    —————————————————————

    LOL

  24. GG Says:

Btw, i dont mean that Wheeler isnt a good player. I mean if OLBs are making 100+ tackles, it’s a sign that the DL and ILBs are being out-played. If the SS is making close to 100 tackles in the season, it means the whole front 7 is a mess.

Ideally, the ILBs and DL are making the bulk of tackles every game, but the actual total number of tackles should be low, not high, it means the defense is a good unit.

  25. MiamiRaider78 Says:

Everyone is cracking me up today, good job gentleman!

and SS/FS tackles means the LBs are blowing their assignments or cant shed blocks.

    ————————————————————

And when the SS/FS combo isn’t very good, you end up with historic failures.

  27. J Hill Says:

but the actual total number of tackles should be low, not high

    ————————————————————

    Exactly.

Good units get off the field on 3rd downs so they won’t have those high numbers.

  28. GG Says:

Dr_robert, sorry i dont mean you’re wrong. You’ve got a good football brain. You’re right in that wheeler is making plays. The issue i meant more is that total tackles itself is a bad not good thing. Speaks more about the defense as a unit.

A good defense isn’t on the field a lot. They stop the 3rd down conversions more often. So the total tackles would be lower for a good defense.

The ILBs and DL should be making the higher ratio of tackles in a game. Say 5 to 8 tackles tops being the highest tackle count for the game for your team, and by an ILB. With say 3 to 4 by a DT. Say 2 to 3 by OLBs and Safeties. In terms of run plays anyway.

Tackles accrued from pass plays is a different matter.

Yeah that’s what I was trying to say. But it’s also pertinent to compare ILB vs OLB total tackles. If the OLB is forced to make 10+ tackles a game it means the ILBs are liabilities.

This is exactly right (other than the point of seeing what Mitchell can do out there.) We’ve seen what Mitchell can do out there, and it isn’t much. And Mitchell seems to be the poster child for being in his assignment, then seeing 10 opponents coming at him, trying to take them ALL ON while his guy just saunters down the boundary past him while the ball gets completed over him for six. How many times has that happened? I think I remember Rivers and Norphus laughing themselves silly at the prospect of Mitchell coming in the game. And then within seconds, just like I described, there is Mitchell taking on the FB who is already being covered by the Will while Gates or VJ just streaks down the field completely uncovered. It boggles the mind really.

I think what has become painfully apparent for the new staff and regime is some of our guys just aren’t very smart. Al always went HWS and in the brand new NFL you see how smart teams are. That is going to take some fixing.

No, the questions last year were, can we stop somebody?, can we score in the second half, and can we cut down the penalties. Melanin theory
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Melanin theory is a pseudoscientific, racist theory[1], founded in the distortion of the known physical properties of melanin, a natural polymer and organic semiconductor.[2] In humans, melanin is the primary determinant of skin color. People whose ancestors lived for long periods in the regions of the globe near the equator generally have larger quantities of eumelanin in their skins. Melanin theorists assert that the possession of greater quantities of melanin causes an inherent superiority of black people. Conversely, its lack demonstrates the alleged inhumanity and inferiority of white people. Some black supremacists justify supremacist assertions by assigning dubious properties to melanin based on pseudoscience and distortions of scientific fact or speculation. Scientists consider melanin theory pseudoscience; it has no credibility in mainstream medicine or science.

    =====

Take away the tackles made from passing plays. It’s more of a pass-driven league so these numbers are on the climb. But the Ravens this year are a bad run D, hence the safety tackles on the climb. Ryan plays up in the box a lot as an extra ‘LB’. Joseph CB from passing plays.

The football fundamental is true. Good defenses arent on the field to accrue more tackles. And good run D’s especially, the ILB(s) and DL get the most ratio of tackles. And when OLBs get more tackles, especially tackles from rushes, than ILBs, it means the ILBs are liabilities.

There’s not a D-lineman in the league in the top 47 in tackles.
    ==============================================

That’s because it is not the defensive linemans job to make tackles. It is the LB’s jobs. I have been explaining that in here for years and people STILL want to argue about it (Jamista Clown looking your way here).

  136. GG Says:

    A good run D…

The DTs eat the blockers, the ILBs make the tackles. But there should be enough TFLs and short 1-2 yard gains due to DTs shedding their blockers and making a play too.

Tackle ratio from rushing plays should see ILBs making the bulk of the tackles, and THEN the DTs. As in, say 8 tackles by the ILB in a game, a DT with 3-5, OLB with 3-5, safeties with 2-3. That’s rushing play tackles ONLY.

Passing plays is an entirely different thing. You’ll see more Safeties, CBs, and OLBs making tackles, so those numbers will further rise in the “overall total tackles”, seeing DTs and DEs numbers at the bottom of the tallies.

An all-world defense tho, a higher number of those 3rd down plays would end up as batted balls, or no stats (errant passes, incompletions). There will be a number of 3rd down passes caught (a tackle made) that didn’t move the chain.

  142. GG Says:

    A bad run D…

The DTs cant shed their blocks, the ILBs blow their assignments, or cant shed their blocks, a lot of rushes going for 4-8 yards, which means OLBs/CBs/S’s are having to mop up.

Statistically, from rushing plays only, and as the opposition would be kicking your butt and thus possessing more ball, you’d see something like…

OLBs 5-10 tackles, SS 5-8 tackles, CBs, 3-4 tackles, ILBs 3-5 tackles, DL 0-3 tackles.

Then factor in the passing plays, all the converted third downs, or slow gradual chain-moving, you’d see a spike of tackles by the OLBs/DBs.

I would love to see DHB return some kicks. Maybe someone can catch the ball and hand it off to him so he could run it back.

  147. GG Says:

Anyway, we’re all saying the same thing about the tackles discussion.

Just watch against the Saints, if we’re doing poorly, the ‘between the tackles’ running lanes will be there, the ILBs not shedding or blowing assignment or making bad reads, and the OLBs having to come across to mop up, and you’ll see often the Safeties making a lot of assisted tackles with those hustling OLBs.

If we’re doing well, you’ll see the middle clogged up, the DL moving the pile, with LBs breaking into the back of the field, or getting outside forcing the runners back in-field where the ILBs/DL make the stop. All those -3 to +3 type rushes.

They say, when it comes to rushing, anything up to 3 yards on a gain is due to the OL, and anything after is due to the RB. So all those rushing plays that go from 3-5 and 3-8 yards, look at the ILBs getting picked up by the guards and unable to shed, or out of position. All those rushing plays like 10-15 or 20-40 yards, look at the OLBs being unable to mop up and the safeties being exposed one on one and standing little chance.

True especially if playing an extra man in the box on run support. SS’s can accrue tackles due to playing as an extra LB. Essentially tho, that particular tackle stat made by a SS up in the box can be attributed as a tackle made from a “LB” position.

Anyway, we’re all in agreement really.

What started me second-guessing Reggie was when he fired all the existing scouts, there was no need to get rid of them, and started hiring his twin and buddies to the gravy train.

Seems to me Reggie is very driven by having his own yes men around him, has a limited scope/experience on things, mainly hiring people he directly worked with that will work for him in his GM/Scouting capacity, leaving the coaching/cuts entirely to Allen, who in turn leaves the entire offense to knapp.

Excellent point, Reggie deserves a draft, we are now under the cap so that issue is gone, his pick of DA cannot be judged until after 2013 IMO. I do think he must get rid of knapp in the off season and if he doesnt that will be a real bad sign. Reggie will have his opportunity. Remember, Reggie at the Packers wasn’t THE guy. He was one of others working in the scouting department. Ultimately all decisions were made by Ted Thompson. This is why I say Reggie is playing fantasy football, why it looks apparent. All the players he directly scouted and liked, that say Ted Thompson didn’t like and eventually weren’t taken on full-time by Thompson, Reggie has brought here. That’s his scope of experience to date. He thinks “maybe i was right, i’ll bring them here and see if they stick”.

Remember how many times he said he LOVES, no, LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVES and gets excited having draft picks. Like those fantasy football general managers.

And it’ll be interesting to find out who actually scouted and recommended players like Burris, Streater, Criner, and who scouted players like Bergstrom, Bilukidi, Crawford, etc.

I give him and his staff (except for knapp) 2012 as a year of transition. however, 2013 no excuses

    ============

I totally agree. Reggie gotta give him 3 years. He will be given 3 anyway. DA gotta give him 2 at most. Things are in flux, always keen an open mind tho. At the same time tho, you can already see DA is messing up, hiring Knapp firstly, soon as he did that credibility lost, but especially as the season wore on, him being resolute about Knapp and not changing systems, blaming players or lack of talent (he even said it again this week), not to mention hawing it up with Fox and he will again with Vitt this week. He’s too passive. Too reluctant to make drastic changes inside his staff.

We’re seeing the cracks appear already, the fly on the wall stuff getting out. Players pushing Knapp (thus Allen) to implement more PBS, them for a long time refusing to budge and saying in interviews that the system will not change, it’s the players. Them finally relenting. The Dmac/Davis thing. Pryor’s “wherever that may be”. The Taiwan vs Adams hypocrisy. Etc etc.

Allen is on notice. He’s tied himself to Knapp and Knapp is gonna bring it all down unless he makes drastic changes. Save your job FFS!

    http://www.silverandblackpride.com/2012/11/16/3655558/raiderdamus-friday-foretelling-week-11-raiders-vs-saints

The Raiders are cratering and the Saints are rounding into form. Do our heroes stand a chance at home Sunday?

Greetings, Raider fans! It is I, RaiderDamus, the greatest seer in history. Last week I correctly predicted a blowout of the Raiders in Baltimore. Carson Palmer had a bit more success than I anticipated, but when you have to throw the ball constantly you are bound to rack up the yards. Quantity over quality and all that. This week, the Raiders don’t have any easier of a task attempting to stop Drew Brees and the rejuvenated New Orleans Saints.

The Saints were, earlier in the year, so bad they lost to the Chiefs at HOME. That’s really awful considering the Chiefs have won only that game so far this season. The bright and silver lining to this upcoming turd sandwich of a game is that no matter how awful the Raiders are, the Chiefs are much, much worse.

The Raiders themselves aren’t so much “bad” as they are “horribly maimed and brutalized” by which I mean they have a lot of guys hurt. For instance, pretty much their entire intended starting secondary. That’s bad news against anyone but against Drew Brees it is a death sentence. Brees is going to throw for over 400 yards, possibly in the first series alone.

The good news is, the Raider passing game is great and the Saints defense is pretty much the worst in the league. They rank 31st in passing yards allowed and dead last in rushing yards allowed. That last stat is irrelevant, as the Raiders would not be able to establish a successful rushing attack against the California School of the Deaf and Blind, but the first one is. Carson Palmer will also break 400 yards, although he may take the better part of the first half to do so.

The thing about this game is that the Raiders will probably not be able to make many, if any, key stops on the Saints offense while the Raiders’ general ineptitude and stubbornness will hinder them from keeping up with the onslaught. This will not be a blowout like last week but it will be more lopsided than the play on the field should dictate.

    Saints win, 55-28.

Perfect example of why it is coaching, not talent…

The raiders run-game/OL last year vs this year, with essentially all the same pieces but the one change being a schematic one.

Coaching alone has killed the run game. It’s not lack of talent.

The same can be said of the defense and special teams, and in various parts in the passing game.

    Another perfect example…

The neglect of Reece for SEVEN weeks. All coaching. Soon as they genuinely endeavor, his natural talent is on display, a game-breaker. Like Taiwan, Ausberry and Pryor can be if given the opportunity.

There are some players from the Reggie era that also need to be removed. It’s not at all a lack of talent, especially not a blame Al one. All he did was accrue talent, athletic ability.

But on that last point, a good GM/HC does not blow up the entire talent inherited PURELY to acquire players that fit a system of an OC that probably wont last beyond this year. You do not gut your roster of talent and feed the rest of your NFL rivals talent.

And another thing, every GM has his scholarship players, that handful of guys you keep at the tail-end of the 53 roster because you cant stash them on the practice squad.

Al was 100% right…it’s the coaches job to turn talent into contributors. You cannot win long-term without talent at many positions. It’s not about choir boys and mediocre talents who can follow systems. You strip this team of the talent inherited and we will suffer far worse years, especially as you cannot draft 7 out of 7 sure-fire winners. You will always find that 2 out of 7. Instead, Bush has the same, if not worse, role in Chicago he had in Oakland.

The knock has been he cant coach D, but hte good thing for him is he wont have to teach Kobe, Artest, ans Howard how to play D as they are natural defenders, but the problem I believe will do them in will be their old legs runnin an gunnin all season plus their weak bench and Nash having to guard top guards in the playoffs it wont look good against Paul or Westbrook.

ZBS/WCO/ZoneD…are all systems predicated on getting by without talent, athletic ability. Because there are so many more mediocre players out there, hard to find specimens with special abilities. Those systems rely more on assignment and guile, hence “zones”.

Al built a roster full of PBS/Coryell/Man fits. And the last couple years we’ve had a 53 roster almost entirely full of young players ready to come together as a unit for 5+ years under the right coaching and development.

It was a mistake from the top to force a schematic change on a roster built for other schemes AND on the verge of breaking out or further developing under previous scheme. Al Saunders still there is our only hope right now offensively. Removing Pollack and bringing Wisniewski back.

Defensively, Tarver/Allen need to rethink a lot. All the new DB coaches replacing the former ones has been a problem too.

Special Teams coach was another mistake.

I had a wondeful opportunity to observe a warbler building a nest today. I was mesmerized by the intricate and meticulous manner in which he gathered the twigs neccessary to build the nest, with each twig placed perfectly in the right manner so as to build a fine foundation for the tiny warblings that would soon arrive.

The nest was crafted in such a position amongst the branches that it would stay firmly affixed should wind and storm threaten it’s stability.

It made me think of Reggie…our “nest builder” who is meticulously gathering the “twigs” (players) who will help build a strong foundation for our future.

With a firm foundation in place, it will allow the “warbler” (Reggie) to place his eggs (future draft picks) in a warm and safe environment which will allow then to be cared for and nurtured; and in due time, to hatch into fine, productive players.

Just as a warbler’s nest takes time and meticulous, painstaking effort, so too will the foundation of the franchise.

The “eggs” shall hatch my friends…perhaps to the tune of a winning record by year 9 of this re-build.

With a little luck and a sprinkling of stardust, we may just be able to have our “nest” completed by year 10.

Don’t look now, but you may just see a playoff team being built by Reggie the “nest builder”.

Patience is the cry heard in the east bay…will we heed it’s call?

It’s not that far off my friends…

The Saints will look to put together their first three-game winning streak of 2012 and claw back to .500 for the season in Sunday’s contest at the Oakland Raiders. It is the first matchup in a two-game swing against Bay Area foes, as New Orleans will host the San Francisco 49ers on November 25 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

It will also mark New Orleans’ final contest against AFC West opponents in 2012. The Saints are coming off a dramatic 31-27 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday and have gained momentum in winning four of their last five contests.

“We prepared well last week, had a chance to compete and won the game,” said Saints assistant head coach/linebackers Joe Vitt. “We are certainly proud of our players and the game plan the coaching staff put together. Now it’s on to Oakland.”

The Saints and the Raiders have met 11 times with the series knotted at 5-5-1. The Saints are 2-2 in matchups played in Oakland. They have won three of the last four in the series.

The series has been defined by several hard-fought contests as five of the games have been decided by a touchdown or less. The first meeting in the series, which took place at Tulane Stadium on October 23, 1968, ended in the first tie in franchise history at 21-21. New Orleans would not capture a win in the series until 20 years later to the day on October 23, 1988, a 20-6 victory at the Superdome that improved their record at the time to 7-1.

Sunday’s contest will be regionally televised on FOX (WVUE FOX-8 locally) with Dick Stockton handling play-by-play, John Lynch serving as color analyst and Jennifer Hale as the sideline reporter. The game can be heard on the New Orleans Saints radio network (WWL 870 AM and 105.3 FM locally) with Jim Henderson handling play-by-play, Hokie Gajan serving as color analyst and Kristian Garic on the Saints sidelines.

240 isn’t big enough for OLB???

OLBs are supposed to be bigger than ILBs???

  361. qodrn1 Says:

And a transcript of Joe Vitt’s press conference. (has he been watching the same team we have?)

Opening Statement: “Today we installed our third down package both offensively and defensively. We had good work. Defensively, the Raiders are going to give us a lot of different looks. Some of these dogs and blitzes are familiar, that D.A. (Dennis Allen) took here and integrated in Denver and brought with him out there. They’re tough, they are challenging. We are going to have our hands full. Offensively, Carson Palmer knows where to go with the ball. Gregg Knapp, their offensive coordinator, really does a good job of creating mismatches. Pattern recognition and making sure we challenge every throw is going to be critical. Zach Strief did not practice today. Junior Galette did not practice today. Corey White did not practice today. Their status is the same today as it was yesterday. Courtney Roby was full and Darren Sproles was full.”

Can you talk about the Raiders if they have Darren McFadden this week? And if they don’t have him?

“It certainly creates another element to their offense. They have kind of the same running game that they put in out there a couple of years when Tom Cable was still the head coach. It’s that zone scheme that was first implemented out in Denver with Alex Gibbs and Mike Shanahan. They do a good job with it. He (McFadden) does a good job. He is a one-cut runner that can crease you and then get to top speed quickly. This blocking scheme and this offense is really catered to what he does best. Listen, their other guys have done a good job with it. McFadden gives you that extra element of making somebody miss a tackle and going the full distance.”

What does Jonathan Vilma need to do to see more snaps?

“He is going to see more snaps. With Jonathan Vilma, the biggest thing (challenge) I had as his position coach was protecting Jonathan Vilma against himself. He is a warrior. He wants to play every snap, he wants be in on every play and I saw it first-hand a year ago, what it did to him when he tried to play with that knee. He wound up having to get a surgery during the season and a major surgery during the offseason. He missed all of training camp so when he came back to play we were going to put him on a training camp rep count where he was going to get a certain amount every game. His reps are going to be up. We need him. He’s getting better every day; his pad level, changing direction, it’s fun to see (it all continue to improve).”

Any timetable of when he will be at full health?

“He is full health right now every time he plays. Situations in games, the packages we have, his rep count is going to go up.”

Is it different because he switched positions?

“No. Every good football (player) we have, we find a place for him on the field.”

Is that a difficult thing to manage, when you have to protect the player from himself?

“Yes, especially with him. He’s a warrior. He wants to play every down. He wants to be with his teammates. He wants to make plays and he wants to help us win. There are some guys that want to play because they’re selfish, they want more balls thrown their way and they want to up (increase) their contracts. Then, there are other guys that want to play because they want to be a part of their team, they want to be a part of something bigger than themselves and that’s Jonathan Vilma. I don’t think I have to explain to anybody my respect for this man, his body of work, (and) how important he is to this football team. Again, we’ve got to do it the right way. This is still a long season.”

Jabari Greer said after the Atlanta game that he was a little depressed before the final play. What does a comment like that say about him and how he is playing?

“Jabari Greer was on our championship football team. We saw a lot of really unique qualities when we acquired him from Buffalo. A year ago at this time, he had the best stats in the National Football League for corners targeted. I think the completion percentage against him was only 40 percent. We trust Jabari Greer. Jabari Greer is a great teammate. Jabari Greer works his butt off every day and in every game to get better. I can’t tell you why or what he’s thinking in his heart when he says that but he certainly knows deep down that we have confidence in him and trust him, as does his teammates.”

No it’s almost always the opposite, in a 4/3 but in a 3/4 you’ll often find the outside guys are OLB/DE’s so in many cases they will be bigger more stout guys. Because they are essentially your pass rushers.

  363. GG Says:

3-4 is feasible with current roster.

Would certainly not be a bad idea to trot out the 3-4 from time to time, even if we mainly play from a 4 man front most of the game. Just to have a look and analyze it in live action.

Clay Matthews is not that big at all.

With the 3 DTs we’d have on the DL, and that big arsse LB 55 in there, Curry and Wheeler MIGHT be fine as speed off the edge.

Wouldn’t hurt to try something since we have no pass rush from the RDE spot.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

240 is big enough in 4-3 schemes, and they can be smaller in Tampa 2, but 3-4 OLBs need to be able to play against OTs (rushing the passer from the edge) most of the game, so they need to have good size and strength to be effective.
OLBs in 3-4 are bigger than ILBs.
Who do you think is bigger L Woodly and J Harison or their ILB (I forgot his name)?

  381. GG Says:

The life and times of Al Davis is probably the most interesting sporting icon of the last few decades. Last american renegade in a particular industry. Kinda like a movie about Larry Flynt. Tollefson, Shaughnessy for sure.

Both agile enough too to be able to play some zone blitz (dick lebeau), where they drop back in coverage every now and then.

If we use all four of the current LBs in a 3-4, on certain downs, I’d have Curry-McClain on the inside, and Burris-Wheeler on the outside, because the latter are better in coverage, and the former are better at just blitzing from the inside or presenting bigger bodies on the inside in run-support.

  386. J Hill Says:

    Curry is 6′2 255lbs

Size is only one issue. The other issue is that your OLB in 3-4 need to be able to rush the passer. Just because a LB like Curry or McClain are 250+ it doesn’t mean they have the skills to rush the passer on regular basis.

It’s not fair to the quality people already in the organization, but they’re not “your guys” and you don’t wanna risk taking the time to find out if you can work with them, cuz you don’t have it. You gotta get results and fast. Reggie has my support/benefit of the doubt for the next 2 years. oh mon. u think anyone who doesn’t agree with u is a “white supremacist”. and u don’t apparently know what that means. it means someone feels white people are better than non-whites, and they believe whites should rule the world.

for u to say there is no such thing as black supremacy is ludicrous. even if only one person believed in it, it would still exist. by definition, it would be anyone who believed blacks are superior than whites and should rule the world.

now, a lot of people would think that might include you. you spend A LOT of time talking about the superiority of the black man. u may try to veil it, but it’s clear to everyone.

and there are plenty of black muslims who feel this way.

and by the way, whites don’t outnumber blacks in the world, so ur not really a minority, so the theory that minorities can’t be racist (spike lee, who i like) is nonsense.

but u have a reputation. and people are irritated by ur rhetoric. so they have a habit of mocking u. that’s why i said give it a week. my bet is is if u just ignore any provocations, and just talk football, eventually people will leave the race stuff out of it. but believe me, there are a lot of people who don’t believe for a second that u are capable of not talking race.

i have ragged on u quite a bit, but i’m trying to take a different route with u. i’m staying neutral. i have my doubts but i hope u can stay strong.

    ********************

ok, here’s the thing. when a player makes a tackle, he is the one that stopped the ballcarrier from going any further. if ur coach, u say “good job, he tackled him.” wheeler makes a lot of plays. he’s the one always around the ball, stopping guys from going any further. it’s a GOOD thing. it’s too bad others aren’t making more plays. it’s too bad out MLB sucks so bad. it’s too bad we don’t get penetration into the backfield or seal the edges. it’s too bad we get no rush and give up so many passes. but wheeler is doing his job well. when the play is at him or near him, he stops it from going any further. if we had 10 more guys on defense doing their jobs like him, we would have a great defense.

and burris is a rookie but he’s pretty good. effort counts and these guys give it. everyone in the nfl has talent. desire and the ability to go make plays is what separates guys.

  435. GG Says:

Everyone gets a free pass it seems but Al Davis.

Everyone said a new regime would prove that. Sure, it’s only been half a season. But it’s apparent that there wasn’t anything intrinsically wrong with the previous regime either. All it needed was better coaching, more talent, time to gel together, and continuity of scheme that suited all the time/effort/money invested in the 53 man roster.

While this regime, with all these empowered coaches doing things without interference, a new GM finally, and everything accountable, all this new defensive scheme that was not draconian, that supposedly would be top 5 from the get-go, has seen the same kinds of problems — penalties, blown assignments, badly prepared, outcoached, giving up big plays and record setting numbers to RBs, WRs, QBs, setting franchise records for most points scored against, still playing favorites, still creating media shills to protect themselves, still not truly accountable, worse even with resistance to change, same excuses, same press conference lip-service…we want to be great, we will bring championships to this organization, build a bully, etc.

There’s a number of players on defense and offense that are expendable. But it still comes down to talent and coaching ability. And just because you replace everything with another regime/system doesn’t mean you have a right combination.

Time must be given, 2-3 years. But there are certain facets already that stink and need immediate change. The last two weeks is just not acceptable. The free pass given to this staff is officially over after that. I am so angry with it. We all are. I swear if we cop another soulless defeat or a hammering this week, there MUST be drastic change in the coaching ranks immediately. There already should’ve been after last week. Purely because we want to believe things are better, hoping they’re better, we give this regime another free pass for another week. But this is it. This is the making or breaking of Reggie and/or Allen. If they don’t win is not even “okay”. But a competitive passionate gutsy intelligent performance is minimum. Otherwise, there must be an effort by the local media to pressure Mark/Reggie/Allen to make drastic changes.

  438. Albert Bigelow Paine Says:

The only way I see DA getting fired is if they completely tank the rest of the season. It’s hard to justify bringing back a 3-13 or 4-12 coach after the team went 8-8 the last two years. I still believe in Allen. I hope he succeeds.

They wont be kept given free passes.

  446. Just Fire Baby Says:

What have we lost, like 13 straight 10am East Coast games? I am sure half of them are of the 20+ point defeat variety.

Last week was just a reflection of that, going against one of the top 3 teams in football.

We have no talent to compare against those types of teams, and nobody in Silver and Black who has really won ANY of those types of games.

We have a bunch of talentless, heartless hacks on both sides of the ball, that’s why Kiffin, Cable, Hue and now DA go to these East Coast games and get throttled EVERY TIME.

Who of our 22 starters would start for Baltimore at the position they play for us? Anyone? Serioulsy who?

  447. Just Fire Baby Says:

We had guys starting like Gio, Willie Smith, Briesel, Burris, Bartell who would struggle to make the 53 for the Ravens.

I think Desmond Bryant might be the only guy who would start on the Ravens.

  448. GG Says:

You seem overly content dealing with franchise records of ineptitude being set against us. Keep giving the free passes, be patient, another humiliating loss no biggie, etc.

The NFL is more and more win-now driven. There is always some leeway/patience given around the league/media for a new structure/regime. But a team going thru like what the Raiders are now the last two weeks, or what Tampa Bay suffered last season (spiraling out of control, getting hammered constantly, soulless), the pressure grows and drastic changes are made (they didn’t clean out the roster, they cleaned out the entire coaching staff). And the results came this year. Another example of it’s not the talent, it’s the coaching.

Rams, Colts (like us all rookie GMs/HCs), Buccaneers (like us in many regards), 49ers, etc…these are the expectations now, the more incidences of them happening.

The same going to happen next season with the Browns and that pressing expectation around the league/media of a new regime finding success and progress sooner than later.

  449. Just Fire Baby Says:

You seem overly content dealing with franchise records of ineptitude being set against us. Keep giving the free passes, be patient, another humiliating loss no biggie, etc.

    ****************************

I have been doing it mostly for 25 years.

Point record mean nothing though, the NFL as a whole is seeing points scored by teams skyrocket over the last few years.

Every passing record, scoring record, points scored, points allowed, franchise records, etc, they are all being broken.

None of those teams had salary-cap hell and no draft picks.

Colts picked 4 PLAYERS before we picked our first one this last draft. Bucs have the lowest payroll in the sport, and had a top 5 pick. They threw all kinds of money around this offseason, and didn’t have to purge anyone from the roster.

Rams traded out of the RGIII sweepstakes and drafted an amazing FIVE GUYS before we picked Bergs, and than had their Sixth pick right after him.

  451. GG Says:

It’s not an excuse the 10am east coast games. We traveled them before and won them. A series of bad coaches or coaching staffs, and room for improvement in player talent, is the cause of it.

But it’s not an excuse to get hammered every time. Bad preparation, game-planning, and coaching. Bad half-time adjustments. Bad relationships between coaches/players. Bad players or players mailing it in. All or any combination of the above.

Many teams around the league with less talent than us put up competitive efforts and even wins more frequently, against ‘elite’ teams.

The key point about what im saying is…if it’s three in a row we get blown apart, the train is off the tracks.

Remember, we got humiliated by the Buccaneers at home. Not just Ravens away. And we’re playing the Saints at home this third game.

I wasn’t quite sure how we’d do this season, but I was hoping that at least if we lose, it’d be in a different way? Raider staples for losing in the new milenia: get shreaded in the run game, STUPID penalties at the WORST possible times. We’ll know when this franchise has turned the corner is when they play an early game in Pittsburgh or Baltimore and are able to go toe to toe with them and fly home with the win.

  455. Just Fire Baby Says:

But it’s not an excuse to get hammered every time.

    **************************

I agree, the West Coast 10am thing is greatly overstated. Last year WC teams had a winning record in such games, in spite of us going 0-3.

My point is that it stretches across multiple staffs. From Kiffin to Cable to Hue to DA. Last year we went into a Miami game against a last placed team, and were losing 34-0 going into the 4th Quarter. That was MORE embaressing than last week, IMO, since the Ravens very well could be playing in the Super Bowl later.

It is going to take more than one offseason with VERY LIMITED RESOURCES, to erase the stench of years past.

We have no depth, no top-shelf talent, and a bunch of middling players as starters.

If we played the Ravens in Baltimore, and switched coaching staffs, we would still lose by 20+ no problem.

Those college players in one season have taken a pro system and are kicking USC in their butts. Great coaches know how to get the best out of their players. Because they don’t ask them to to do things they know they aren’t great at. Look at the QB Hundley an unknown but they are turning him into a great QB using him correctly and so forth.

Jeeeeezus, JFB has lost his mind.

I’m beginning to think JFB actually stands for Just Freakin’ Blind.

You really see no reason ?

How about being dead last in rushing ?

Let me help you open your eyes…

Remember the Bed and Breakfast O ?

The most maddening part of that debacle was that even a casual observer of football realized the Raid O-Line couldn’t pass protect for more than a second to save their lives.

Yet the Raids insisted on having Andy Walter take 7 step drops and run pass patterns that took forever to develop.

The result was so predictable, that it was beyond belief that it continued the entire season.

No adjustments. No quick hits. Just the same crap, over and over. I’m surprised Walter lasted the season.

Classic case of a staff not making adjustments or putting the players in a position to possibly succeed.

2012 Krapp O is similar in the respect that it’s obvious the Raid O-line can’t run the ZBS and DMAC doesn’t do well with it – yet your boy Krapp refused to accept this or move away from the ZBS.

Result ? A once formidable running attack reduced to complete garbage.

There’s are reasons we’re dead last in rushing, and Krapp is at the top of the culprit list.

Heck, with Palmer having an off-season to get ready and with a healthy DMAC, we shouldn’t be struggling to match last years scoring output – we should have been blowing it away.

Can’t believe you can’t see this.

    C’mon man.

Just wondering because I think the Raiders have the #17 for now.

    ==============

Hard to tell at this point but I see him going Top 10. Even flawed QBs get drafted high if teams see something they can develop. Ponder, Locker, Tannehill, etc..

This blog is messed up. Kinda like the Raider offense. Not nut sack bravado.

  507. Try Some Reality Says:

People who know better know that where Bill Walsh was starting from isn’t even close to where these guys are starting from. Carson Palmer at DMC at RB nice WR’s. Decent defensive personnel. If you saw that crap Bill Walsh had to purge to compare thet two is laughable. I know I was THERE to see it.

    =====================================

Exactly. No reason we shouldn’t at least match last year’s record with the current players.

    LB Te’o

We need a leader on defense. Wheeler has defaulted to that leader but he’s not the right one. We need:

    • Manti Te’o MLB Notre Dame 6-2 255

McCheese has turned out to be a bust & will be traded or cut at the end of this year. We need a franchise MLB who can become that leader. This guy can get the job done.

Some have us picking 15-17. Personally, I think we are going to be a lot higher than that. With our schedule and current OC, we can expect to be a top 5 pick. while that in itself is depressing, there are benefits to being a bad team – draft position. Drafting Te’o could have a long term significant benefit to this team.

The comments where he refused to take responsibility for anything, threw Cable under the bus, and openly mocked the idea of ever playing for the CFL as part of a comeback. He literally expected some NFL to just call him up and say “Come to our Training Camp.” Wrong.

  525. VaRaiderNation Says:

Whats up Nation. lmao at a japorkus comeback. What a piece of garbage. I believe we will be drafting in the top 10 in the upcoming draft. This team has so many holes to fill. MLB, DE, DT, CB, FS, and OT come to mind. Will there be any good FAs at any of these spots available in the offseason? With all of these issues I still believe a solid corner should be at the top of any draft board if there are no good FAs to bring in. Don’t really follow cfb so I don’t know who the prospects are. Just so tired of watching this team attempt to play defense…I think Baltimore wouldve put up 55 even if we had 22 guys out there playing D.

  526. Gdog Says:

The favorite whipping boy here, Seymour, seems to be more appreciated by PFF:

    …quote…

The surprisingly excellent linebacker Philip Wheeler had a day to forget last week. He made our ‘Had a Bad Day’ Team, but still has managed a solid +8.2 grade on the year, good for second on the defense behind Richard Seymour.

  528. YoungAmerican Says:

Doubt the Raiders will bring any big-name FAs in. Probably just depth guys. I like Frank Omiyale – can provide much-needed depth at everything but LT and C.

I also think the Raiders should get James Sanders in free agency to provide depth at FS. Borderline starter, but an upgrade if they want to keep Huff at CB.

Definitely, which surprised the hell out of me.

Would like to see the Raiders add to that position in the draft, but I have a feeling the front seven will be their priority for now. Cary Williams might be a nice budget FA pickup.

That Anthony Barr for UCLA is a complete IDENTICAL prospect to Jason Taylor.

He even looks like him on the field. Long neck sticking out, very angular. Elite pass-rusher who used to be an offensive player.

Wouldn’t mind someone like that coming off the edge for us next year.

  538. Just Fire Baby Says:

Hundley is a very cerebal QB, like his future.

Arm-strength needs to improve, but he is 19 so it should. There were a few times UCLA WR’s seemed to be waiting for the ball to get there.

Lots of pro’s on that UCLA team though. Hundley, Franklin, Barr, I liked that Hester #21 as a future safety maybe, the McDonald kid, Shaq at WR, the Feiora kid at TE.

    That team is absolutely loaded.

  560. Gdog Says:

Hue’s going to get a great job, especially if the Raiders keep swirling the toilet.

I see 4 wins tops this year with a QB playing at pro-bowl level… that’s almost impossible to achieve in today’s NFL.

Hue got us to 8-8 with hardly any QB play at all.

  561. Plunketthead Says:

I can see Hue recruiting Compton in his brown pimp suit with that bright purple tie. Tenn and USC were dumb enough to hire Kiff so I imagine Hue can get a sweet gig

  562. YoungAmerican Says:

It’s hard to tell what the Raiders’ plan is going to be in free agency and the draft without knowing what the roster is going to look like at that point. Plenty of players will not be coming back.

In particular with the front seven. Are Tommy Kelly and Richard Seymour going to be back? Will the Raiders cut McClain loose? Will they re-sign Shaughnessy, Wheeler and/or Bryant? What kind of linemen or linebackers are they looking for, and how does this effect how many of each they sign/keep?

It’s hard to tell what the Raiders’ plan is going to be in free agency and the draft without knowing what the roster is going to look like at that point. Plenty of players will not be coming back.

In particular with the front seven. Are Tommy Kelly and Richard Seymour going to be back? Will the Raiders cut McClain loose? Will they re-sign Shaughnessy, Wheeler and/or Bryant? What kind of linemen or linebackers are they looking for, and how does this effect how many of each they sign/keep?
    _______________

Of all those names Wheeler is the only player I would want back. Bryant provides depth and TK…well…he’s good at times but is a complete bonehead. Wonder what the stats are on how many penalty yards he’s cost us in his career. And how many of those penalties were on 3rd down?

Anyone have enough koolaid left to predict a Raider win tomorrow? I’m fresh out. Would love to see this team come out pissed off abt the Ravens game and play with some pride and intensity and make the Saints wish they had stayed home. But I’m not holding my breath.

    —–

    The only areas…

Saints Run D and Pass D are both ranked like 30 and 31.

The Saints rushing offense was also ranked in the 30s for a long time, but last few weeks have doubled their average yards per game and average yards per carry.

Ie…apparently we should employ a balanced offense, equal pass:run and should put up long drives. Whether we score TDs or FGs is another issue. Defensively, we’ll have to put them in 3rd and long as often as possible and just hope we get a few incompletions with some good coverage. Natural pressure is going to be the key as we’ll need all hands on deck to try to keep their receivers in check.

First time I’ve really tipped a hiding genuinely against the beloved Raiders. Just can’t see the Saints slipping up here with Wild Card berths on the line, and the Raiders coaching/player cracks starting to appear.

It’s not CP3 and our Offense that I’m worried about. It’s this D that couldnt keep a peewee team from throwing (or running) all over the field, especially the middle of the field. I think Drew Brees has been licking his chops all week to go up against this “defense”. With the lack of defensive stopping power coupled with Knapps offensive playcalling, we’re in for a long day. You’re kidding yourself if you think it hasn’t even started. It started weeks ago when the push for the PBS occurred. Veldheer speaking out in a media quote. McFadden/Davis story. The redzone offense is a worry tho. We need to keep pace with the Saints scoring drives. Otherwise the blowout will happen quickly and the D will pack it in for the day, wont bust their guts for an O that can’t keep up and keep them in the game. VaRaiderNation Says: Carson Palmer tied the franchise record last week with 15 consecutive 200+ yd games. Better believe he’s breaking that record tomorrow.======

He11, Palmer would break 200 yd.s with a bad OC, no protection and unreliable receivers. Oh, wait…never mind.

  643. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

Just so we’re clear, I’m not saying that Bush was a starting running back at all.
The guy was rarely in shape and got worse the longer the game and the season went on.

If Allen does get fired, I wouldn’t mind seeing Stanford coach David Shaw hired. He was an assistant with the Raiders and is Willie Shaw’s son.
    __________

I think we will see DA on the sidelines again next year, sure as hell hope some of these assistants take a walk, though. I don’t like DA’s lack of emotion, and I obviously don’t like losing. But as crazy as it may sound I’m still on the fence about him. If we did bring in someone else. I would hope for a big name, a proven coach (NOT Andy Reid). Really wanted Jeff Fisher last year and we see what he’s doing in St. Louis.

  645. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

Allen is not going to get fired.
On the other hand, Shaw is one damn good coach.

Darren pumpkinhead McFadden reminds me of that tinman on Oz who wanted a heart. If pumpkinhead had heart and average calves he could be an above average RB

DA’s not going anywhere. Shaw could make an interesting candidate, though.
