Branch still out, Mitchell prepares for first start

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, November 16th, 2012 at 11:42 am in Oakland Raiders.

Mike Mitchell inched closer to his first start as Raiders strong safety Friday when Tyvon Branch missed practice with a neck injury.

Also not practicing as warm-ups and drills gave way to team sessions were running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson (high ankle sprains), defensive tackle Richard Seymour (hamstring) and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (hamstring).

Coach Dennis Allen said regarding Branch on Thursday he’d have “some real concern’’ if he weren’t able to practice the following day.

Mitchell, in his fourth season out of Ohio, has been on the field seven times at the start of games when the Raiders opened in a nickel defense, but never as a starting strong safety in the base defense.

“Obviously, it’s a goal of mine to be a starter in this league and to play,’’ Mitchell said. “I welcome the opportunity. It’s unfortunate, what’s going on with Tyvon. You never want one of your brothers to get hurt, but I’m willing to play.’’

It’s a big challenge in that the New Orleans offense features tight Jimmy Graham, a 6-foot-7 former basketball player out of Miami who has 45 receptions for 533 yards and seven touchdowns and presents a nightmare matchup because he’s too big for defensive backs and too fast for linebackers.

“I haven’t seen anyone get very physical with him yet, as far as DBs,’’ Mitchell said. “Most guys are too small, and they shy away from him. She just bodies them. I’m curious to see how he’s going to handle more of a physical, skill-position guy checking him at the line.’’

Taken in the second round of the 2009 draft, Mitchell remains eager to validate the decision by Al Davis to select him, a choice that astonished some draft analysts who considered him a late-round pick or potential undrafted free agent.

Mitchell has battled injuries at times, played in different defensive packages and on special teams, and looks forward to his first crack at being a full-time player. The presence of Branch, drafted the previous year and a starter for the last 57 games, has kept Mitchell in a supporting role.

“I’m just so ready to be done with this, to show what I can do,’’ Mitchell said. “I’m tired — I feel like I’ve been held back, held back, held back. So if I get the opportunity I just want to go play good football and show the abilities God has blessed me with.’’

Mitchell plays with emotion and reckless abandon. He’s known as a “friendly fire’’ threat among teammates, and Allen is hoping to see Mitchell dial it back just a bit when necessary.

“He’s a very passionate player, he works extremely hard, he loves the game,’’ Allen said. “Sometimes you’ve just got to slow his heartbeat down a little bit and get him to calm down. It’s important to him, and that’s what I like about him.’’

– If Heyward-Bey can’t play, it means more snaps for Rod Streater, Derek Hagan and Juron Criner.

– Assuming Seymour is out, Desmond Howard will draw his second straight start at defensive tackle alongside Tommy Kelly.

– Marcel Reece will open at running back with McFadden and Goodson out, backed up by Jeremy Stewart, with Owen Schmitt playing fullback in formations that call for it.

It’s a lie that Taiwan isn’t seeing more snaps because he’s fumbling a lot in practice.

The real reason is because Taiwan ad-libs, like Marcus Allen’s SB TD. Knapp wont play him because he wants a RB to just laboriously batter the ball up into the designed play. If the line is getting blown up, and you’re going to get stuffed for a 1 yard gain, doesn’t matter, follow the design.

Taiwan in his rookie year, under Hue/Saunders, got 16 carries for 73 yards and ZERO fumbles. Hue/Saunders managed to get Taiwan action. Knapp is laboriously uncreative and doesn’t know how to get all the young players game experience to develop them along.

Taiwan has gone backwards this year ONLY in the sense of not seeing any significant playing time. Not in talent or ability.

And consider that Adams is constantly fumbling the ball in LIVE games yet gets a free pass every week. It’s all lies. Allen and Knapp’s handling of the Taiwan vs Adams situation is how they will be undone.

    ——

That’s exactly what’s happening with some other players. Leads to frustration, internal problems. Especially when after a number of humiliating losses, for the coaches to NOT try to change things up by giving some other players a chance, a window to prove they’re better starters.

    Mitchell, Taiwan, Pryor, Chekwa…

  29. Orthodoxdj Says:

I agree with many of the comments about the scheme and the play-calling, but the reality is that it’s hard to give a true assessment of either this early. In a year or two it will be clear.

  30. GG Says:

Taiwan is not fumbling the ball in practice like Knapp says. Taiwan has never fumbled the ball in live games in his two years of game time. One exception the fake punt this year. Meanwhile, McFadden has fumbled the ball a lot in practice and in LIVE games, (he had like 14 fumbles in his first three seasons), and that never stopped anyone from starting him. Adams continues to fumble the ball in practice and live games and gets a free pass, gets Allen putting an arm around him for encouragement.

    Ask Jerry on twitter.

If Al was still around…He would rip the coaching staff a new one for not coaching up TJ and making him great.

Under this current coaching staff, I have not seen any improvement from any players that were here last year. Quite the contrary, everyone except for maybe D Moore have regressed. That speaks to coaching ineptness.

  44. GG Says:

Knapp-huggers, watch this week, when Stewart looks slow and unexplosive, 8 for 15 yards, and/or fumbles a ball or two.

He will continue to be back-up next week behind Reece.

When Adams muffs another punt, he will continue to get the job during the game and next week.

Taiwan held back, not given an opportunity in either role.

Knapp tipped his hand already anyway….he likes Reece as starting RB because it gives him a game-planning “edge”, will he carry it, will he go out like a WR. And Stewart is more of a short-yardage back. Reece-Stewart is like a McFadden-Bush concept. The elusive back backed up by the power back. Taiwan is more of the elusive starting back, not an elusive back to back up an elusive back.

    ==============================================

    1) Knapp’s explicitly saying Taiwan is fumbling in practice.

    2) The ZBS relies on the running back doing exactly as he’s told. He needs to run the plays as they’re being dictated.

  48. GG Says:

That’s why Knapp sucks as an OC. He’s far too regimented and everything fits into little boxes in his world. Things must be followed to the letter, he gives his whole mind/life over to “the system”. System > players. Not utilizing players for their abilities and tailoring a system around them.

It took 7 weeks and resistance from players to get PBS worked into it.

One thing about Hue…soon as he walked in as OC, he asked his players what they like, what works for them, and with Saunders tailored stuff around them. As an OC a Hue type > Knapp.

There are very few players on this team that i enjoy watching. DHB DMO Dmac, reece and tp6.

Obviously only DMo seems to be getting a steady diet of action on sundays, so mm34 playing will at least breath life into an otherwise dead and dreadfully dull season.

Branch stinks out loud, and we havnt had a good physical saftey since eddie anderson, or perhaps our brief run with eric turner.

I hope MM34 plays well and unseats branch all together, and we can trade branch for something

  73. GG Says:

So let Marcus Allen continue his running assignment in that Super Bowl, and not try to make something happen. That play turned the game around. I agree too much east-west a la Reggie Bush is not good.

Taiwan’s thing is he’ll do the patient thing, follow the zbs, look for a lane and cut. But sometimes/oftentimes the line gets blown up, and he naturally goes sideways a bit to get outside it, or tries to bounce it another way. He’s that type of player. If the lane is there, he’ll take it, and batter forward for the boring 3 yards.

But as we all saw with McFadden thru 7 weeks…the system under knapp is unforgiving. Just put away your abilities and follow the assigned running lane, just keep banging your head into a brick wall for those 1 yard losses and 2 yard gains.

Remember those few games McFadden got frustrated, where the line got blown apart and he’d try to dance around sideways looking to make something happen. That’s what McFadden and Taiwan are like. Knapp will beat it out of them with a wooden spoon. Would prefer boring backs who just barge forward. Like Fargas, Stewart.

Taiwan is ‘ready’. But he’s not ready under Knapp, in Knapp’s system.

Just like how we saw McFadden can be an elite RB. But he’s not under Knapp, in Knapp’s system.

That’s how players appear to be regressing and gives the excuse/appearance that Reggie “should” cut/trade them because they must suck therefore.

But the real problem is the system.

Remember, Reece wasn’t even utilized thru 7-8 weeks!! Up until then, if anyone wondered, they’d possibly have thought…Reece must suck. But clearly as we saw after, when you get them on the field, and utilize them often, they will do things, look explosive.

Pryor, Ausberry, Taiwan, next cabs on that rank.

lol at couldnt keep his mouth shut? you mean a coach cant keep quiet in a press conference? OH NO .. fire any coach that speaks up about his teams lack of effort!!!

I’m with ya on that. Hue never called out anybody by name. He referred to the defense not getting the job done and he was right…they didn’t.

Hue was frustrated, and the thing is when he said it “was a joke”…he was right. It WAS a joke.

Everybody points to that last presser as if he stood up and urinated on the team photo and went ballistic and punched reporters or something.

I’ve seen pressers waaay worse than that one…and way more fiery as far as calling guys out.

About time a HC is honest.

I guess he didn’t give the obligatory “it’s all on me” b.s and that was his downfall.
    ——————-

Hue kept it real, and folks just couldnt handle it. Hue got us CP3 in here and would have gotten us a decent DC in here if he would have been allowed to. A real DC would be able to squeeze more production out of this unit which is not totally void of talent, like I,ve said before its a chess game and we dont have very good chess players in our coaches, I saw someone spoke on PITs D earlier their D is good but their secondary is horible with the exception of #43 but Lebeau is a dam good chess player and he’s been able to make it work for years without a shutdown corner on the roster, THATS COACHING.

  112. Albert Bigelow Paine Says:

Knapp will take the fall. I think Tarver will stay, and they will get him some real players on defense.

  113. GG Says:

    Knapp is like this analogy…

Inherits Tom Brady as QB, has a suspect OL, instals a scheme with a lot of QB rollouts because that’s his thing that year, what he wants.

No matter how many times Brady looks bad rolling out, not athletic, not good throwing on the run, Knapp will continue to beat him with a wooden spoon, trying to fit Brady into what the system is.

So, let’s trade Brady then, because he’s not a fit under my system.

Knapp as OC leads GMs/HCs to think or feel obligated to gut the roster of the talent there is, for mediocre talent that follows the system. It’s not about great players, or talent. It’s about mediocrity that can “execute” things as designed. Because “the system” is lord, it’s not wrong, it works, it is always the players. He himself has said this often in interviews early. Belligerent and stubborn about it. No, my system is fine, it works, it’s the players.

That’s where Reggie and DA are going to get crucified by RaiderNation. Letting this OC come here, create the impression players outright suck (not regressing), and thus cause a gutting of the roster, of the talent there is, that Al and his scouts (that Reggie all fired for his nepotistic hires) truly did well in finding. It was always up to the coaches to school them up.

Hue/Saunders had them going in the right direction (reece, mcfadden, moore, ford, taiwan, ausberry…pryor not yet).

The worst thing about Reggie/DA in this regard is that you give Knapp 2-3 years, ceding over offensive control to him, and he’ll regress your roster, gut your roster of talent. In 3 years he wont be here, but in 3 years you’ll have lost a lot of your talent in the process, replaced them with mediocre scrubs that fit his system. Youre left with the system in place, a whole lot of mediocre players, and now a task all over to rebuild, to find talent, and a new system.

If any of you are on the fence about current Raider REGIME you really owe it to yourself to check out a clip from the NFL website titled Sound FX: John Harbaugh’s Ravens Flying High.

It’s just a small clip up of Harbaugh mic’ed up, whooping it up on the side lines while out coaching the Raider’s coaching staff.

For those of you with weak stomachs I’ll paraphrase.

After the fake FG, Harbaugh can be heard joking with a referee “You can’t line up in a total overload from the five yard line and expect us not to do something like that. It ain’t rubbing it in your face if you are going to give it us.”

Another coach walks over to the Harbaugh and says “You said it would be there all week.”

After a Raider’s blown coverage, Harbaugh asks what the original call before the audible. The Coach tells him “That was the call. He(Flacco) made a dummy call to make it seem like they checked into a run so they(Raiders)came down and blew the check.”

It is a short clip but it illustrates just who far this REGIME is over it’s head.

    Mark Fugged Up

That’s the news headline for the 2012 season and beyond. It all started with him and has rolled downhill since.

    1. Fired Hue in spit of Reggie ‘perhaps’ happy to keep him on as HC and give him another year, if that rumor is true.

    2. Reggie firing all the scouts and making nepotistic hires, completely turning over a lot of the working parts when not necessary, putting his buddies and twin on the gravy train, not hiring or rehiring the right people people per se.

    3. Hiring Dennis Allen. No one would’ve hired Dennis Allen YET. These young up-comer coordinators often go thru the cycle of HC job interviews for a few years before they get hired. He needed a wiser more experienced HC for that bridge period of 2-3 years.

    4. Allowing a rookie HC to make all his own hires.

    5. Dennis Allen for hiring Greg Knapp, firing a lot of the good position and assistant coaches already in place. Who’ve now gone on to greener pastures.

    6. Knapp bringing with him Pollack, and the departure of Wisniewski as OL coach.

    7. Pollack bringing with him Brisiel.

    8. Reggie playing fantasy football with his transactions, signing scrubs he scouted 1-3 years ago while at the Packers, who are nothing but scrubs and have remained scrubs since.

    9. Reggie sitting on his hands as his HC and OC systematically turned this team backwards.

    10. Dennis Allen sitting on his hands, not making drastic coaching staff changes.

    11. The whole situation we’re now in…where Reggie/Dennis/Knapp resist change because they don’t want to give the impression to anyone they made mistakes, thus out only to save their jobs, stay on an NFL payroll.

hu jack was canned for what happened off the field, like the trade, and throwing players and coaches under the bus and openly criticizing the front office.

D.A should be fired fro his terrible on the field product

for the record i was one of the first way back in the off season to predict the low win total.

I knew something was fishy when Reggie fired all these scouts and long time guys and brought in that guy Joey Clicksdale to be director of football operations.

Also thought it was fishy the way Raiders didnt even interview another GM.. Mark was just told by Madden and Ron wolf basically what to do.

Why was Wolf so insistant on Reggie, was it maybe so his son Eliot could get a promotion?

    —–

    a very good question.

at the time i trusted wolf’s advise, but mark fugged up not interviewing anyone else.

i think madden merely advised mark to speak to ron wolf and stepped away. and ron wolf (and mark herron?) made the advise to hire reggie (he possibly was only thinking of seeing his son promoted).

so if a team sucks, it must mean all of it’s players suck right? no ability to sort thru the team and find the keepers? cut all 53 and start over right? you apparently have no ability to diagnose the problem. just “they suck”.

so according to u, every player on the chiefs, jaguars, browns, jets, rams, panthers, redskins, and eagles sucks, correct?

    Gonna tell you guys something.

I’ve suffered through too many years of this team sucking.

    Way too many.

But through the darkest years, I never abandoned hope.

Always felt we’d get it turned around.

Even during the ‘Bed and Breakfast’ year, I knew the team was horrific, had hit ROCK BOTTOM – but I also knew CHANGE was definitely on the way. Might only result in more futility – but something was going to be done to try to get us out of the sht storm.

    Not with these azzclowns though.

Can’t get behind a team with Krapp as OC or a HC that was dumb enough to hire him and too fkng blind to not dismiss him.

C’mon Reggie – Give me some hope.

I believe people here are calling DA “Tits” but the reason and origin is an urban legend.

MR78, I believe Tits is Dennis Allen. Apparently, one of our esteemed bloggers saw that DA had man-tits one day on the sideline hence the name.

    Congrats again by the way.

This happens to be an urban legend that is TRUE.

The origin of the Tits nickname is based on the fact that DA is a skinny dweeb that’s sprouting some A cup udders.

During the warmer summer months when Tits is wearing a t-shirt, it’s very noticeable.

    Tits has tits.

His coaching might be a joke, but the fact that he has man-boobs is not.
