Mark Davis ‘embarrassed, disappointed’ in team’s play

Raiders owner Mark Davis consented to a group interview with the media about 30 minutes after his team lost for the third straight time, 38-17 to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at the Coliseum.
Davis was cordial, candid and and passionate in answering myriad questions about the state of his team, the status of head coach Dennis Allen and general manager Reggie McKenize, his expectations and much more. Here’s the entire transcript:

Q: How do you beat Pittsburgh, play Atlanta tough and then have this happen?
Mark Davis: “The word regression.”

Q: Is this a rebuilding season?
A: “Not as much. I don’t know what the word would be. I know that we didn’t have the talent, at the beginning of the year, to be a Super Bowl team. I thought that we had definitely potential to get maybe in the playoffs and beat our division. Obviously, that hasn’t happened.”

Q: What’s your mood like?
A: “I’m not happy. But nobody in this room is.”

Q: Do you still feel as if your team can turn it around this season?
A: “Take it game by game, but I don’t know. I know they’re going to fight.”

Q: What do you say to the players?
A: “I didn’t say anything to ‘em. Let the coaches talk to em. I talked to Reggie (McKenzie, general manager).”

Q: What were the goals heading into the season?
A: “Finding a direction for the franchise, moving forward and seeing progress week to week would have been a happier time right now. But that’s still possible.”

Q: What kind of a challenge did you face with a first-time owner, rookie head coach, rookie general manager, salary cap issues, lack of draft picks, etc.?
A: “It’s absolutely a challenge.”

Q: Has the challenge been more daunting than you expected?
A: “No, I wouldn’t say that. I wouldn’t say that. Again, it’s just the results of the game. You win or lose. We haven’t been winning, and it hasn’t been close the last three weeks.”

Q: Did you see depth as being an issue going into the season? Salary cap issues hamstring your team?
A: “As I said, coming in I didn’t know that we had a Super Bowl team and everything, but you can’t blame it on the salary cap and all that. You have players and you coach ‘em and you play. You got to be Raiders.”

Q: Is it time to give other quarterbacks a shot other than Carson Palmer?
A: “That’s up to the coaches. That’s not my decision. I have opinions but I’m not going to speak ‘em.”

Q: Why not?
A: “Because that’s not my place. I have plenty of confidence in Carson Palmer.”

Q: The players say that they aren’t giving up on the season? Your thoughts?
A: “Absolutely. Absolutely. I’m just saying right now I’m a little disappointed with the regression. But, like I say, they’ll fight.”

Q: How frustrated are you?
A: “I couldn’t put it on a 1 to 10 (scale). I’m not happy, I’ll put it that way. But why should I be? Why should we be? Why should anyone in this room be? But they’’ll fight and fix it.”

Q: Do you talk to coach Dennis Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie much during the week?
A: “I talk to Reggie quite a bit, yeah.”

Q: About business?
A: “Everything.”

Q: Do Reggie and Dennis get a pass this year?
A: “Like I say, I’m patient. I’m patient. But I want to see progress. I don’t want to see regression. Nobody does. And that’s why I’m unhappy today. But as far as a pass, I wouldn’t call it a pass. They’ve got contracts; they’re going to be here.”

Q: Did you say you just had surgery?
A: “Yeah, I had back surgery.”

Q: What did they do for your back?
A: “It’s been a two-year process. I had a sciatic nerve problem, a pain in my ass. And I had surgery five months ago, and it didn’t fix it. And, then, so they took pictures again, they found a big cyst-tumor right on the sciatic nerve.”

Q: Why didn’t they find it the first time?
A: “So I’m feeling a lot better.”

A: So it’s all healed?
A: “Well, not totally. January 1 I can start working out. The triplets go away then. I deliver. But again, it’s a sad day today. The last three weeks have been sad, but we’re going to fight. That’s what it is. And we’ll see what happens.”

Q: Are you involved in choosing people to light the torch?
A: “Yes, I am.”

Q: Couple people who your dad had issues with, eh?
A: “Maybe some people thought they were unresolved feelings, but (they are) very close to my mom and myself. And part of the Raider family. And once a Raider, always a Raider. I’ve had trouble with my dad at times. Once or twice. But it’s fantastic. These people are all part of our family, and love ‘em. It’s a good thing.”

Q: Who’s next?
A: “Who you think should be? I’m definitely open to suggestions.”

Q: Encouraged by fact that fans are still here?
A: “Love it. Absolutely love it, but I apologize to them as well. I’m embarrassed for ‘em. Because they live and die as Raiders fans, and I feel for ‘em, I really do. And we’re going to get it right. If it’s for anybody, it’s for them.”

Q: You heard the boos?
A: “I didn’t hear the boos, no. But I can just feel how they feel, because I feel the same way. I’m a fan. And I take responsibility for it, going to get it right.”

    SAINTS REPORT

Once again, another game we let get away, and get away early.

Dropped TD passes in the endzone…. the 13th of the year if you count the pre season. On our second kick off return our returner has a huge hole, a sure TD, and he trips on a blade of grass. Thats 14 pts we should have had. By the time we finally score, we could have been up 21-7. But thanks to more poor route running by Denarius “I cant run my routes” Moore, we spot them another 7. Then we give up a 38 yard bomb on a 3rd and 13 that gives them another 7.

21-7 at the half. Except its the complete opposite of the way it should be.

This was a 7-4 football team that collapsed under Hue. He wanted to gut this team of the LOSERS but he made himself un-keep-able with his tirade at the end of the year and his idol worship of the late Al Davis.

So we go into 2012 with a nearly identical squad yet we have already started our collapse before we ever got going. Lets not act like we havent seen this team NOT SHOW UP before. Remember Miami and GB last year? They did it to Hue also.

So with that said, Im not ready to give up on the coaching staff yet. They arent the problem. Most of you wont agree with me but most of you cant differentiate between poor execution and poor play calling. Most of you have never played and couldnt break down film to save your life. When our team starts doing the basic stuff right, then we’ll start winning games.

Its been the same mistakes all year. Crappy WR play. Crappy O-Line play. And poor tackling and our LB’s missing gaps. It’s time to gut this thing. Heck, Im all for putting Pryor in at this point. For two reasons, save Palmer’s arm and secondly, lets see what we have in TP. No point in wasting him away in street clothes. We gain NOTHING by playing Palmer at this point and we lose a valuable time to evaluate Pryor for the future.

The only way I consider dumping this coaching staff is if Chucky is available. Thats it. Otherwise we stay the course. Its not our coaches faults that our players continually shoot themselves in the feet. Dumb penalties, missed assignments, poor gap control, missed tackles, timely fumbles, and dropped TD passes are all a massive fault of the players themselves.

Here are my suggestions to Reggie moving forward. Some of you will be VERY surprised by some of it as recent circumstances have caused me to change my stance on certain players…..

Players to keep moving forward, these are the stone cold locks to keep:

    - CP3 (he’s not the problem, he’s having a career year, he’s a WR and a RT away from winning us a lot more games. We should have brought TO in. End of story)
    - Pryor
    - Wiz
    - Goodson
    - Reece
    - Veldheer
    - Bergstrom
    - Ausberry
    - SeaBass
    - Burris
    - Wheeler
    - Huff (he’s a good #2 CB, replacing him while finding a #1 CB will be next to impossible)
    - Branch

Everyone else is expendable at the right price. Dump DMC if we can get a 1st rounder for him or a 2nd & a 3rd. The Jets are dumb enough to do something like that. Goodson, Reece, and now that practice squad guy Stewart have all proved that despite schitty OLine play, DMC was part of the running woes. His field vision is poor and he lacks patience. You could argue that we need to go back to a Power Blocking Scheme. But that requires expensive lineman and a talented back like DMC that cant stay healthy. Sorry. But thats too expensive and too unreliable.

Seymore has played well but he’s going to retire and is just too expensive. Our WR core needs a major kick in the a55. Jacoby is always hurt and hates playing in the slot, he doesnt want to be here as a result. DHB has too many dropped balls for his playing time/paycheck to warrant. Denarius has caused a number of INTs due to his lack of focus and running of the wrong routes. Streater has dropped TDs and fumbled in the redzone too many times. Our WR core is so frustrating. They do so many things awesome and they all have these lil flaws that cost us big. If we could take those 4 guys and combine them into 2 guys we’d have Jerry Rice and Tim Brown again. Unfortunately we have the parts but as a whole, the sum of that group just doesnt add up. I hate saying it, but its the damn truth.

Briesel has been a huge bust. Our RT situation has been a major issue for years. Barnes must go. I dont care how, just get him the fvck out of a Raider uniform. The whole right side needs to take a hike. Lets stop putting lineman NOT in there natural positions. Wiz is a LG not a C. Bergstrom is a RT not a Guard. For fvcks sake.

Get us a real center. Move Wiz back to the left side and maybe Veldheer will start looking like the Veldheer we all came to love last year.

Missle Mike, your time has come and gone my friend. I always felt we should have developed him into a LB/S hybrid that was there to cover the TE’s. He’s good at it. But we’ve never done that with him. We tried to make him a Strong Safety and he cannot play that position. Im done waiting. Either use him to his limited strengths or just dump him. Yeah, dump him. He’s a liability on special teams as well.

Meyers… too many dropped TDs for my taste at this point. If we can upgrade at this position, do it. And that goes for a ton of positions. If we can upgrade, do it.

Lechler, gone. Too expensive. By simply dumping Lechler, Seymour, DMC, McClain, Mitchell, Briesel, Curry, and Kelly we will free up a TON of money and its not like our team will get any worse. All of those guys are easily replaceable.

    We need (in this order)

    1. Center (draft one to develop and pick one up in free agency)
    2. Right Guard (draft one to develop and pick one up in free agency)
    3. #1 CB (how we passed on Assante Samuel I just dont know)
    4. a true #1 WR (by any means necessary. We could have had Moss and TO lined up this year and I highly doubt those two would have dropped so many balls and ran so many poor routes. Just sayin’)
    5. two MLBs (one by draft and one by free agency)
    6. switch to a 3-4. Our current DE’s are just not game changers and finding some stud DEs in the draft or in free agency might just be too expensive and difficult to pull off considering the other problems.
    7. get a true #1 TE if Ausberry isnt the guy. We cant have a guy that drops TD passes. It just cant happen.
    8. get a real Special Teams ace to return punts. Im tired of the bums we roll out there. They always fumble at the worst times.

Realistically we have about 11-13 guys who are worth keeping and 8-10 that MUST go. Everyone else should be on notice. If the coaching staff has lost this team, its time to evaluate who really wants to be here. Some of them obviously still dont get it. Al Davis isnt coming out of the grave to fire our coaching staff and tell the players it isnt there fault. Daddy isnt going to fix everything and make it all better. It’s gut check time. The scholarship days are fvcking done. I cant wait to see who gets their pink slips.

Until our O-Line is rebuilt from the right side, our WRs grow the fvck up, and we get a LOT better at the LB and DE positions, we will not be where we should be.

  • Raider Riff

I will say this, Im content with Mark Davis’ attitude at this point. He said all the right things in that interview.

Heck, he doesnt talk much to the media, the very fact that he took the time to do so right now at this point in the season speaks volumes as to his frustration and the fact that he wants us to know that he cares.

  • CVRaider

As often as we hear stories of how Al would slam Mark in meetings, Mark had to take something from his father, and i think would want to make his farther proud. Do you think he says to thimself, “What would dad do?” I hope so, cause Al would not keep this garbage around for more than one season.

All the stories were told of how Al would come out to training camp or practice on a golf cart and everybody would play harder and be on their best behavior. Did Al attend all practices years ago when they were good? Its almost as if these players arent afraid of losing their job and are used to losing. Bill Cower, Gruden, Parcells would.all be awesome. But DA is soft. Come on Mark, hire a person that the players will fear.

By all accounts of the media and the players, DA isnt soft. He gets loud and animated, just not in front of the camera.

And yeah, the players played harder when Al was at practice. That wasnt the problem. it was the conflict of interests when it came to Al meddling with the game plan and undermining his coaching staff that was the problem.

Lets stop looking for phantom answers to the problem and lets just be real. Our team is in major need of some house cleaning. Its long overdue. Its not complicated or difficult to see.

Some guys just got to go.

Even DA tied his coaching truck to GREG KNAPP lol just like kiffin. KNapp has brought down this offense yet again.

Boo birds, Fans leaving early.. Pigeons flying over the stadium just like before when HUE GOT here and brought back excitment to this franchise. Say what you want about HUE but this time last year we were in the playoff hunt without DMAC or Campbell.

Will DA be a better coach then Singletary or NOLAN? probaly not. Da reminds me of singletary saying we are gonna look at DA FILM. lol what else coach?

Now you know why HUE BYYTCHD out his team in week 17 saying there was gonna be alot of changes. You guys blame hue for the D last year LMAO.. well what baout DA.. thats his area and the defense is WORSE!! under his watch. Most points since pre AL ERA

  • dbaz09

Coaching, Defense, and O-line. This team has failed all counts and the responsibility lies with the Coach. Unlike past years, we can’t/won’t follow Davis’ lead and start over again next year. And that’s a good thing.

The problem is Allen was hired on the mandate that he could win now with this team. He hasn’t. O-line was restructured with a new system and has failed. Coaching has looked inexperienced and nothing like a Payton/Harbaugh model I’m sure Mckenzie was looking for. And can’t stomach any mention of the defense.

It’s a shame since the last couple of years showed promise and here we are.

Raider fans are awesome. To bad we had to watch this slop fest. One other thing before I call it a day to a very depressing game.

Saints coulda pummeled DA to the tune of 55 or more points, but I believe vitt was showing allen a little professional courtesy by not b!tch slapping him like harbaugh did.

It aint the players people. It’s the zbs and defense scheme regression. And Mark knows it. Sounds like Reggie gets a earful of it to. Palmer is put put into a position to fail with horizontal passing, then presses to much.

Another stupid observation. Reece is pretty good. Why the eff didn’t knapp ever offer a legit 1-2 punch with Darren and Reece to begin the season? We were so damn 1 dimensional it was pathetic. We were beyond 1 dimensional, maybe a half dimensional.

It means he’s not afraid to cut his loses. He wants to be patient but if things dont improve, he isnt going to give them their whole contract just for the sake of doing so.

As for dumping Hue, I would have preferred Hue stayed. He earned it. BUT… he left Mark no choice. Hue overplayed his hand. We need to all be honest about this fact and just get over it. Hue has no one to blame for his firing but himself.

  • CVRaider

Raider Riff…. I agree that it is not difficult to see. But i disagree that its mostly players The teams that are good are because of coaching and the QB, PERIOD.No other position changes a game that much except maybe a RB. These guys are in the NFL because they are big, strong, fast and talented. What seperates them is what a coach can do with them. Ever wonder why Parcells was always successful, why Cower always had good teams,, or.why Gruden took a bucs team that aleays underachieved and he won a super bowl in year ONE. Namdi was great, but that didnt help in the wins column. Barry sanders was the greatest RB ever, but wayne fontz was an idiot. On the flip side, Teddy Bruschi was slow, short and not very talented but was coached to be in the right positions. Wes Welker was a nobody, but a good coach used his talents and look at him now.

I could go on and on, but its very simple, good coaches win in this league, good players help but the Raiders cant draft thier.way out of this, or trade thier way out of it either.
