Reece gets his shine on

Marcel Reece is listed on the Raiders roster as a fullback because, well, he has to be listed as something. Calling him a jack-of-all-trades might be a more apt description.
On Sunday for the second straight game, Reece shifted into running back mode out of necessity and responded with 193 yards rushing and receiving in the Raiders 38-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints at the Coliseum.
Then again, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, given Reece played wide receiver in college and even spent some time at tight end early in his Raiders career before settling in at fullback.
“He has come in and not missed a beat, filled the shoes and done everything we’ve asked him to do, at a very high level,” fellow fullback Owen Schmitt said. “It almost seems at times that he takes the whole game on his back, making plays when we need him desperately.”
Reece, 6-foot-1 and 255 pounds, did just that against the Saints, rushing for 17 yards on the first play from scrimmage and combining for 47.8 percent of Oakland’s 404 yards offense overall.
Fans always are clamoring for more Reece, knowing full well that he always tends to deliver when called upon.
They got their wish the past two games as a result of high-ankle sprains to Nos. 1 and 2 running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson.
For his part, Reece shrugged off the impressive yardage total and wondered what more he could have done to make a difference.
“There has to be something more because we didn’t win,” Reece said, not impressed by his workload or stats. “We’ll go back to the film, look at it, and see what else I could have done to try and help this team get some wins.”
Reece’s teammates are quite content with what he accomplished Sunday. They just wish that they could have done more.
“We went about this game plan, whether Darren was back there or he was there, and we were going to stick with the run and try and grind it out,” quarterback Carson Palmer said. “But he’s a football player and he just makes football plays, over and over again, every week. You feel like you can’t get the guy the ball enough. … Marcel’s special.”
Right offensive tackle Khalif Barnes said Reece’s performance is even more impressive, given he was forced to shoulder the load with McFadden and Goodson on the sideline.
“Oh, man, Reece was a soldier, man,” Barnes said, shaking his head. “He went out there and did exactly what he’s been doing, basically, all season long. … He’s picking up a lot of slack and he’s been doing a hell of a job.”

You are wrong Lefty, before Hue got here the Raiders were 5-11 and still floundering under Cable, when Hue took over the O the very next year with basicaly the same talent the O took a major step up, then Cable gets the hook and Hue proceeds to go 8-8 without Cable, get it right old man.

303 No one is saying the GM should be fired, I just don’t want to see this team lose the way they’re losing. They are not even competitive……….it’s as if they shouldn’t be on the field.

There is a happy medium here, and it is play to your potential and let the chips fall where they may. That is NOT happening at all. A 500 record would be acceptable to meI would have no problem with it. But we look like an expansion team or worse.

  • RaiderLen

    Way to go Marcel.

Ya let’s argue about Hue, and Dead AL, and Palmer and what might have been.

    Same old shiiiit.

Either M Davis gives this group an opportunity, or He doesn’t.

We can then regurgitate the same old shiiit over and over again.

Gotta love mike mitchell, talks smack on friday night about graham. graham catches first td pass today, mitchell then bites on route and gets beat for the game changer td at end of first half. he comes out after halftime and misses tackle on ingram who goes 25 yds for td. after game hes crying because he just wants to win. maybe he should apoligize to teammates for failing today. or better yet, shut up until you actually contribute like a 2nd round draft pick is supposed too.

  • nycraider

if reece keeps playing this way reggie will trade him for a 7th round draft pick.

  • RaiderLen

Mitchel is deluded. End of story.

The “competitive” issue is part the HC and part the players. We still have a lot of Al’s crappy players that are not intelligent and disciplined.

The minute they fired Hue, most of us knew this was a Throw away year, unfortunately….

East, once again get your facts straight.Tom Cable was the one who brought this team from a 5 win team to an 8 win team, not Hue Jackson. And I have never talked ‘up’ Allen.I’ve always said he deserves more than 1/2 of a season to see what he can do.I don’t believe in firing coaches after 1 season, whether it is Jackson or Allen but I understand why Jackson was let go.New GMs always bring in their guys. With all that being said,I still believe HJ wasn’t a good HC.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Wrong. It was HueJak’s team in 2010 and 2011. He’s 16-16 by my count. He should have kept John Marshall as his DC. If you really believe Cable was anything but an ugly Raiderette in 2010, ask yourself this question: Could he have fired Hue Jackson if he wanted to? I’ll give you a hint: Nope.

    SAINTS REPORT

Once again, another game we let get away, and get away early.

Dropped TD passes in the endzone…. the 13th of the year if you count the pre season. On our second kick off return our returner has a huge hole, a sure TD, and he trips on a blade of grass. Thats 14 pts we should have had. By the time we finally score, we could have been up 21-7. But thanks to more poor route running by Denarius “I cant run my routes” Moore, we spot them another 7. Then we give up a 38 yard bomb on a 3rd and 13 that gives them another 7.

21-7 at the half. Except its the complete opposite of the way it should be.

This was a 7-4 football team that collapsed under Hue. He wanted to gut this team of the LOSERS but he made himself un-keep-able with his tirade at the end of the year and his idol worship of the late Al Davis.

So we go into 2012 with a nearly identical squad yet we have already started our collapse. Lets not act like we havent seen this team NOT SHOW UP before. Remember Miami and GB last year? They did it to Hue also.

So with that said, Im not ready to give up on the coaching staff yet. They arent the problem. Most of you wont agree with me but most of you cant differentiate between poor execution and poor play calling. Most of you have never played and couldnt break down film to save your life. When our team starts doing the basic stuff right, then we’ll start winning games.

Its been the same mistakes all year. Crappy WR play. Crappy O-Line play. And poor tackling and our LB’s missing gaps. It’s time to gut this thing. Heck, Im all for putting Pryor in at this point. For two reasons, save Palmer’s arm and secondly, lets see what we have in TP. No point in wasting him away in street clothes. We gain NOTHING by playing Palmer at this point and we lose a valuable time to evaluate Pryor for the future.

The only way I consider dumping this coaching staff is if Chucky is available. Thats it. Otherwise we stay the course. Its not our coaches faults that our players continually shoot themselves in the feet. Dumb penalties, missed assignments, poor gap control, missed tackles, timely fumbles, and dropped TD passes are all a massive fault of the players themselves.

Here are my suggestions to Reggie moving forward. Some of you will be VERY surprised by some of it as recent circumstances have caused me to change my stance on certain players…..

Players to keep moving forward, these are the stone cold locks to keep:

    - CP3 (he’s not the problem, he’s having a career year, he’s a WR and a RT away from winning us a lot more games. We should have brought TO in. End of story)
    - Pryor
    - Wiz
    - Goodson
    - Reece
    - Veldheer
    - Bergstrom
    - Ausberry
    - SeaBass
    - Burris
    - Wheeler
    - Huff (he’s a good #2 CB, replacing him while finding a #1 CB will be next to impossible)
    - Branch

Everyone else is expendable at the right price. Dump DMC if we can get a 1st rounder for him or a 2nd & a 3rd. The Jets are dumb enough to do something like that. Seymore has played well but he’s going to retire and is just too expensive. Our WR core needs a major kick in the a55. Jacoby is always hurt and hates playing in the slot, he doesnt want to be here as a result. DHB has too many dropped balls for his playing time/paycheck to warrant. Denarius has caused a number of INTs due to his lack of focus and running of the wrong routes. Streater has dropped TDs and fumbled in the redzone too many times. Our WR core is so frustrating. They do so many things awesome and they all have these lil flaws that cost us big. If we could take those 4 guys and combine them into 2 guys we’d have Jerry Rice and Tim Brown again. Unfortunately we have the parts but as a whole, the sum of that group just doesnt add up. I hate saying it, but its the damn truth.

Briesel has been a huge bust. Our RT situation has been a major issue for years. Barnes must go. I dont care how, just get him the fvck out of a Raider uniform. The whole right side needs to take a hike. Lets stop putting lineman NOT in there natural positions. Wiz is a LG not a C. Bergstrom is a RT not a Guard. For fvcks sake.

Get us a real center. Move Wiz back to the left side and maybe Veldheer will start looking like the Veldheer we all came to love last year.

Missle Mike, your time has come and gone my friend. I always felt we should have developed him into a LB/S hybrid that was there to cover the TE’s. He’s good at it. But we’ve never done that with him. We tried to make him a Strong Safety and he cannot play that position. Im done waiting. Either use him to his limited strengths or just dump him. Yeah, dump him. He’s a liability on special teams as well.

Meyers… too many dropped TDs for my taste at this point. If we can upgrade at this position, do it. And that goes for a ton of positions. If we can upgrade, do it.

Lechler, gone. Too expensive. By simply dumping Lechler, Seymour, DMC, McClain, Mitchell, Briesel, Curry, and Kelly we will free up a TON of money and its not like our team will get any worse. All of those guys are easily replaceable.

    We need (in this order)

    1. Center (draft one to develop and pick one up in free agency)
    2. Right Guard (draft one to develop and pick one up in free agency)
    3. #1 CB (how we passed on Assante Samuel I just dont know)
    4. a true #1 WR (by any means necessary. We could have had Moss and TO lined up this year and I highly doubt those two would have dropped so many balls and ran so many poor routes. Just sayin’)
    5. two MLBs (one by draft and one by free agency)
    6. switch to a 3-4. Our current DE’s are just not game changers and finding some stud DEs in the draft or in free agency might just be too expensive and difficult to pull off considering the other problems.
    7. get a true #1 TE if Ausberry isnt the guy. We cant have a guy that drops TD passes. It just cant happen.
    8. get a real Special Teams ace to return punts. Im tired of the bums we roll out there. They always fumble at the worst times.

Realistically we have about 11-13 guys who are worth keeping and 8-10 that MUST go. Everyone else should be on notice. If the coaching staff has lost this team, its time to evaluate who really wants to be here. Some of them obviously still dont get it. Al Davis isnt coming out of the grave to fire our coaching staff and tell the players it isnt there fault. Daddy isnt going to fix everything and make it all better. It’s gut check time. The scholarship days are fvcking done. I cant wait to see who gets their pink slips.

Until our O-Line is rebuilt from the right side, our WRs grow the fvck up, and we get a LOT better at the LB and DE positions, we will not be where we should be.

This teams failure is an indictment on Tommy Boy. He hires the GM after one interview. This is a $500 million company and you are going to do one interview for the head of the Company. The GM thus hires the coach after one interview. Did not due any due diligence on whether if maybe Von Miller has has something to do with the defense being good. Did anybody realize the fanbase would not tolerate regression after 10 years of failure. The only way to come correct is to admit you screwed up and rehire Hue or Gruden.

Safeties coming up free in the box, can’t not only miss the tackle on Ingram, he didn’t even slow him down so someone else could drag him down 10 yards later.

i’m not confident in reggie at this point, he’ll get his chance next year. his moves havent been brilliant and his replacements havent been an upgrade. however, he has his excuses in 2012. 2013 will reveal everything. everyone keeps pointing to the draft as the way to build, but the great teams build through all 3 phrases, free agency, draft and trades. look at NE , the CB they traded for 2 weeks ago from tb made a pick and returned it 60 yds for a TD. none of reggies moves have been panned out. Yes, of course he had a tough cap situation so thats why he paid 3 mil to a injury prone CB who hasnt had an int since 2008. he also whiffed on brisel, spencer and he drafted a 26 yr old lineman who couldnt beat out Willie smith.Burris is average as is wheeler.he franchised Branch which was a big mistake and then signed him longterm. I will give him this year as a rookie GM with alot of excuses. All legit. But nothing has me convinced hes the right guy to replace our roster, and he could be stupid enough to trade reece for a 7th rounder. who knows. 2013 there are no excuses for reggie.
