Beat writer Jerry McDonald’s take from today’s proceedings

Owner Mark Davis isn’t the only person who has a problem with the way the Raiders have played over the past three weeks.

“Hey, I’m right there with him,” Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Monday at his weekly press conference. “I’m frustrated. I’m disappointed. You wake up in the morning and your gut hurts.

“At the same time, when a man gets knocked down he gets up and fights. And that’s exactly what we intend to do. I understand his frustration; I can appreciate that. Let me tell you there’s nobody that’s going to work any harder to get it corrected than I will.”

Davis had an impromptu meeting with the press following Sunday’s 38-17 loss to New Orleans, saying he was a patient man but unhappy with “regression.”

When asked if general manager Reggie McKenzie and Allen received a pass this year because of salary cap issues and injuries, Davis said, “I wouldn’t call it a pass. They’ve got contracts, they’re going to be here.”

Next up for the Raiders is a visit to Cincinnati on Sunday and with it the twin storylines of Carson Palmer’s return to Paul Brown Stadium and former Raiders coach Hue Jackson being on the opposite sideline with the Bengals as an assistant coach.

Beating the Bengals, 5-5, after an unprecedented three-game stretch during which the Raiders have given up 135 points, would brighten the outlook considerably.

“When you lose, it hurts, rips your gut out,” Allen said. “A win turns everything around. A win makes everybody feels a lot better. And that’s what we need to do. We need to come together as a football team and all make a decision that we’re going to do what it takes to win football games.”

Allen’s message to the team was to stick together and Palmer believes his talk hit the mark.

“His message was really good, spoken from a guy who’s been on good teams, been on bad teams and been the middle also,” Palmer said. “I think this team will respond very well to his message. We have to stick together. I don’t think that’s an issue. We know what areas we need to improve on. This is a group that is not going to shy away from that.”

The Raiders issues have remained fairly constant since the season began. Offensively, they’ve had difficulty running the ball, although Marcel Reece had 103 yards on 19 carries against New Orleans. They’ve had difficulty converting third downs and in the red zone.

Defensively, the Raiders have had periods of being unable to stop both the run and pass, and against New Orleans both problems were in evidence at the same time.

“I think consistency has been our biggest Achilles’ heel,” Palmer said. “We’ve put together great plays or a great quarter or a great half on every side of the ball. But consistently doing it — the teams that win consistently in this league play consistently well four quarters of the game.”

Defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who has missed the last two games with a hamstring strain, agreed.

“It isn’t the most talented teams that win in this league, it’s the teams that do everything right over and over and over again,” Seymour said. “We’ve been inconsistent at times, offense, defense and special teams. Any time that happens, the record speaks for itself.”

– Allen hopes to see players such as Seymour (hamstring), Darren McFadden (ankle), Mike Goodson (ankle) and Tyvon Branch (neck) back on the practice field, but made it a point to say injuries were no excuse and had no information as to whether any or all could return this week.

– One of the people Allen has sought for counsel is Dan Reeves, the head coach in Atlanta when he had his first NFL job.

– Asked if he has enough good players to turn things around, Allen said, “I firmly believe that. I think of you look at it the other way around that’s an excuse, a crutch to say you can’t get it done.”

I watched last night as the NIners dismantled the Bears but I also saw the Niners lose to Minn and basically lose to the Rams. You know why in those games they were outcoached plain and simple.

You cna put players in position to win and you can put them in position to lose. Scheme is not nearly as important as GAME PLANNING. THis team goes into games porely prepared to win, the gameplans are not set to have the players have success as much as they’re are to execute their system.

Harbaughs strengths are not his system it’s his gameplans from team to team they’re damn near brilliant. Gameplanning and playcalling are what give players the opportunity to be successful. That is where these coaches show on a wek to week basis that they have no clue…………..period
    ———-

The 49ers success lies in the fact that they are stocked with studs on both sides of the ball.

    We are stocked with duds.

  • Priesttj12

Morilla, listen man if you think the Niners had this all world team last year you just don’t know football. Their defense was talented yes but what Harbaugh did with Alex Smith last year deserves a freaking medal. He just took what he was given and made it what he wanted it to become. All they had last year were two TE’s and a RB and a bad QB and HE made it work………..period

  • Priesttj12

Yeah Reggie ran off some of those studs, The Niners have a bunch of guys that are very well coached. I know this goes over your head but those guys are just very well coached..period

  • DJ Johnny

The reason guys discount last yr’s record is becuz they don’t wanna face the fact that Hue Jackson did much better with basically the same talent.

It pains and frustrates them to make the comparison so they say “Well….we were in a weak division and….you can’t count some of those games, and they were a mirage…i don’t care what the scoreboard says…we really should have lost”.

8-8 is not anything to write home about in the first place so why try and minimize it?

It’s simple. Hue was an Al guy and people hate Al Davis and are happier than pigs in slop that he’s gone.

    I get it.

Name a fully manned, good playoff team that we beat last year.(Denver with Orton and Chicago w/o Cutler do not count).

When we faced good competition the last ten years we got crushed.Lokk what happened to us down the stretch last year. Remember Green Bay and Miami?

About as close as we have come to beating a good team in recent memory is Atlanta this year.

    ——
Exactly, I have been telling these guys about our last 2 years being fluke , we swept the division in 10 and went 2 outta 10 in outta division games, we won 6 games against weak opponents last year 1 against broken up SD line, other we would have lost had the guys not played hearts out after Al D passed n even that 1 came down to last play , so it’s simple we can beat below average to average teams , but we always get crushed against good teams, teams with good lines on both sides , we need to get pas rusher in FA and Draft and DT in draft , couple of Oline in draft

  • Priesttj12

Last year under Wylie and Wiz these guys played a lot better than they are this year…..They were used much better than they are this year.

Look at the Niners formations the 7 man lines on short yardage they put them in position to succeed…period

  • Al_is_theraiders

its true…they cant see what a terrible mess reggie has done to this team.

  • DJ Johnny

If you guys didn’t read it Richard Seymour effectively put the kabosh on the ill conceived and bogus notion that Hue “lost the lockerroom and aliented the team”.

    Look it up.

I know, I know “Seymour is just making that up”.

    Yep..okay.

  • http://raiders.com Albert Bigelow Paine

Hue didn’t lose the locker room. He lost the owner and the new GM. It is no one but Hue’s fault that he got fired.

No it doesn’t come from the hate for al or anything, just the way I see it, you can say 8 wins are ,8 wins all you like ,but you can’t discount that all those came against weak teams except 1 , we would b on par with last year ,if we faced the same teams , another thing I like to point out is ,other teams improved with FA and Draft ,and we were cutting loose our players just to comply with salary cap rules , you can say 8 wins all you want ,but reality is we got crushed when ever we faced good teams , this team is not good enough yet , I wish Hue was here too, but he wasn’t really going to do much to offset our D’s deficiencies , no matter who is the DCo , if you got no pass rushers on your team, you can’t pass rush ,period.

Hate to disagree but we are too far gone especially on the lines to think we can do it in 2013.

I hope I am wrong but I have been seeing this train wreck coming and I have been warning fans that we are going about this the wrong way. The game is won in the box and we have ignored that area for too long.
You need to build the lines first.

The problem is it takes about three years to build those units because most of it needs to be done through the draft. The cap does not allow you to do it any other way.

Coaching changes, new schemes all sound nice and they can be done ON PAPER WITH A STROKE OF A PEN.
Then reality sets in and for the 10th YEAR IN A ROW we miss the playoffs. More disturbing is we get CONTINUALLY CRUSHED BY GOOD TEAMS. If we could at least keep it close I would have some hope. We just get bulldozed by teams just like last year down the stretch.

??? Last years right side was still complete garbage. Nothing’s changed. Only thing different is that we have a Gaurd playing Center.

Don’t compare the Raiders Oline to the Niners. Not even close.

  • Priesttj12

Big Wiz, could see these guys didn’t know what they were doing and didn’t wnat any part of it. Lil Wiz is playing out of position and asked to do something he’s NOT GOOD at doing. Same with DMC

I think Wiz liked the young talent he had a hand in bring in and Reggie and DA didn’t. So Wiz said ADIOS!

  • morilla

I mean good lord, we were praying for Kalif Barnes to get healthy. Are you kidding me?

  • mcfadden20.

Even if Hue was here , we are still looking at 3 wins , which good team besides Houston did we beat last year? It would have been same story and no I don’t hate hue , I wanted him back after last year with better DCO ,but more you’re watching this team and you check the teams we beat you will realize too we’re in deep sh1t ,it’s going to take good Reg offseason in 13 to fix th1s sh1t

  • http://raiders.com Albert Bigelow Paine

If you were named GM, would you keep the guy who traded away two of your high draft picks, proclaimed it the ‘greatest trade ever’, finished 8-8, and lost the division to Tim Tebow? And then starts talking sh*t how he’s going to run the team in the future. I wouldn’t.

  • Priesttj12

Last years right side was tons better than this year. So we’ll just have to disagree and we never gave Bruce Campbell and Barksdale a chance just like we never gave Kevin Boothe a chance and all he’s done is start for the SB winning NYG’s since he left here when Cable got rid of him for Cooper Carlisle.

I liked Hue and I wish he was still here.

As I said, last year down the stretch we got pummelled by good teams.
    Look at the record!!

Green Bay, SD and Miami kicked our A$$.
We blew a big lead to the Lions.
We lost our last 4 out of 5 giving up an average of 38 a game in the losses.

Hue was a good coach but we still got our butts kicked.

    - yeah it looked good against weak teams, when we faced good teams they ate that line for lunch, we have looked good against Jax and KC this year…

  • mcfadden20.

Yeah We would have probably scored a few more points with Hue and that O line , but reality is we would lose against good teams, we weren’t going to stop good passing teams with that scrub team, we weren’t going to go head to head with good Os with those RecEivers we have

The Bears Oline belongs in the Lingerie League….there’s a reason that that was the bets the Niners Dline has looked all year.

The Saints were a mess when Payton took over. The Stanford Cardinal hadn’t won in eons and the Niners were on a 8 YEAR run out of the playoffs……….those situations were not pretty. But they didn’t go in with the mindset that it’s going to take 3-5 years they took what they had made it work……period

Again we won 8 games with a mash unit last year…..we ont win 6 this year………period

The owner and the GM agreed this was a playoff team before the season started so what happened???
    ===============================
Yeah, I agree completely. If it’s good coaches it would show IMPROVEMENT.

Hue was definitely a better play caller.
The defense actually looked better under Bresnehan (that’s about as big of an insult as you can give).

The O-Line definitely looked better last year with basically the same personnel (1 different).

Our main RB definitely looked better and until they were hit in the face with it, they didn’t even utilize Reece who’s a hellova weapon.

The only unit who maybe is playing better this year on the whole team is the LBs.

My point exactly and that is just how bad the guy who Reggie brought in. What was wrong with keeping Barksdale? Based on what I’m seeing now I think that would’ve been the right move. But Reggie thinks he’s some genius and he brings in a turnstile and penalty machine in Brisiel. That’s what we got a bunch a crap instead of developing the talent we had.

Pat Lee at corner was there answer for Chekwa and DVD and they even CUT HIM! Reggie is chasing his tail truth be told.

People keep talking about a salary nightmare, well I never saw that stop Mr Davis form getting players to re-neg and get some cap space to do whatever he wanted.

Everyone keeps pointing to the new CBA yet we pay Seymour 15 mill and the QB 11 mill. Those are decisions Reggie could’ve dealt with. Even if he had to move some money here and there that is his job.

My point is not that we aren’t going to the SB or anything it’s the fact that he took a decent team and it’s regressed we’re setting record lows for performance stop making excuses about things that have zero to do with that fact………we should at least have 4-5 wins and NO ONE could complain. But we don’t we’re sitting here 3-7 on the way to 3-8 with what Reggie said was an upgraded roster……..that is the point.
    ****************************************
Disagree. Sure Al played the cap game, but it never translated to wins, so saying that the cap can be manipulated is meaningless. You can start 10 guys on defense every play, but you aren’t going to win. Al’s ineffective management of the salary cap and free agency in general are the exact reason we have been weak and not competitive for the last 11 years.

The Raiders have too many inexperienced people in Leadership positions and need to bring in some people who have done it before. ^^^^^^^
    Yep.

Can’t have rookies at the most important positions. Owner, GM and head coach.

If Reid is available after this season. McK should make a hard push to get him and see if Reid can or if DA is willing to be stay on as Reids DC.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Off the top of my head, Atlanta hired Diemtrioff or whatever his name is to be a GM and he’s done well. But for an unorthodox organization like the Raiders that it was under Al, having 3 guys who are new at their positions to fill that vacuum is just asking a lot out of them. Emotionally, I’d love to see Chucky, but practicaly, maybe Holmgren? (GB connection with Reggie, SB winner, front office experience as well) might be a good fit?

As for DA, I would hope for his sake that he has the self-respect to leave the organization before taking a demotion. In that kind of situation, it’s just best for everybody to move on. Plus, how could the players take him seriously and actually listen to him after he was neutered like that? #hashtag STOOGE.
