Grading the Raiders from the Saints game

By Steve Corkran
Monday, November 19th, 2012 at 12:50 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders off their performance against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Here is a look at how the Raiders graded out:

Pass offense

Carson Palmer (22-for-40, 312 yards) had his third straight game of 300 yards or more, but 113 of those were tacked on with the Raiders already trailing 35-10. Two interceptions were costly — one that Malcolm Jenkins returned 55 yards for a touchdown, the other that bounced off Brandon Myers in the end zone for a Saints interception. Palmer and Denarius Moore were barely in the same area code.
Grade: D

Run offense

Marcel Reece gave the Raiders steady yards on the ground, finishing with 103 yards on 19 carries as the Raiders rushed for 120 yards overall and a respectable 4.6 yards per carry. The Raiders got no surge on a first-and-goal play at the 1, with Reece getting stuffed for a loss, starting a sequence that ended in an interception.
Grade: B

Pass defense

Lance Moore got cornerback Michael Huff on a double move for a 38-yard touchdown inside of a minute left in the first half and later beat Ron Bartell for a 16-yard score. Drew Brees was a coolly effieicent 20-for-27 for 219 yards and no interceptions. Brees was not sacked. Miles Burris failed to cover tight end Jimmy Graham on a goal line play. Touchdown. Grade: D

Run defense

The Saints, not known as a big rushing team, gained 153 yards on 28 carries, averaging 5.5 yards per attempt. Mark Ingram had 12 rushes for 67 yards and a 27-yard touchdown run on the first offensive snap of the second half. Defense gave up runs of 27, 25, 19 and 14 yards. Rolando McClain had 10 tackles in the base defense.
Grade: D

Special teams

Coye Francies had a chance at a big kickoff return and fell at the 20-yard line. A 75-yard kickoff return by Travaris Cadet to open the second half swung momentum permanently to the side of the Saints. Sebastian Janikowski converted his only field goal attempt from 40 yards. Shane Lechler can’t catch a break kicking inside the 20 as everything rolls into the end zone. Grade: D

Coaching

Whatever the coaching staff is saying at halftime isn’t working. The Raiders have been outscored 123-34 in the third quarter. However, the loss to New Orleans had more to do with players getting beat by better players than it did with offensive or defensive play-calling. If the Raiders could have gotten out of their own way and taken a lead, they might have run the ball all day.
Grade: D

I’m problably in the minority here now… But I’m still glad to have Palmer and while the picks get frustrating i see bigger and more urgent needs with this team … When A Qbs playing from behind picks happen…

you guys should get mad at AL D, last year was pretty fluke , we weren’t going to win against good teams with this roster, only team that anyone can name last year was Houston

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

More than the Pats can say. New England didn’t beat a team with a winning record during the regular season last year.

  • JLofty

In 2010, Campbell completed 8 of 21 passes for 83 yards, threw two interceptions and posted a career-low 10.7 rating in the Raiders’ 17-9 loss at Candlestick.
Hahahahahahahaha. Oh man was he horrible that day…
I hate loosing;-) to the Niners!

  • mcfadden20.

Yes we deserve better , but be patient , this team needs full offseason with money to spend, you guys make too much of 8-8 record

DLine needs make over with exception of Bryant and Houston, Both should start next to each other at DT

Need 2 pass rushers at End spots, Von Miller have 13 sacks , Dumerville have 8, our whole team have 2 less than V Miller

  • wishbone

Maybe all of this is done on purpose so that Mark will move them back to LA.

  • papertiger418

Last year was a phantom; after that loss to GB and Miami and Denver, I didn’t even want to watch the team throw away a game. I still can’t believe we let McGahee and Tebow beat us coming off a bye week!

  • JLofty

I wished we drafted Kaepernick two years ago. Who’d we pick anyway? Or did we even HAVE a draft pick?
Hahaha. Oh well maybe we’ll get to see Tyrell Pryor soon. Dang that kid ought to at least be playing TE or WR or something….

  • Marks hair

We were 8-8 two yrs in a row.. with a top 10 running game both yrs.. we have gotten worse.. it starts with reggie and his coaches. I have seen the difference that a great staff can make too many times to believe otherwise..

  • zopi

98% on this blog believe that Palmer is an upgrade over Campbell.
    50-50 on Hue/Junior.

Campbell and Bush got a chip on their shoulders, play tonight back in the bay area, if JC has a decent game and wins, watch out below.

If the bungles put a hurt on CarSux, look out above!

    They only went 13-3?

  • THE BLACKHOLE

Even if I graded on a curve and gave them an A for attendance this team would still get an F, an F for Fvck you you degenerative scum.

This defense is like a diseased dog, it needs to be euthanized and burned.

    Dennis Allen’s starting defense:
    DE-Andre Carter signed
    OLB- Phillip wheeler Signed
    OLB- Miles Burris Drafted
    CB- Ron Bartell Signed
    CB- Shawnte spencer Signed
    CB- Pat Lee Signed
    CB- Joselio Hanson Signed
    SS- Tyvon Branch Signed
But of course it has to be one of Al’s picks that is making the defense worse like Lamar Houston or Michael Huff. Don’t dare blame a rookie Head coach.

    Dear Reggie Mcdonalds:
Stop picking up Packer trash and start scouting talent you buffoon. I can find better people to play defense at homeless shelters. You do know what talent is right? Just because they wore green and gold doesn’t mean they’re talented, it just means that they have a very good QB making the team look good.

    Dear Defense:
    Where are you?

    Dear God:
    Where are you?

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

If the bengals beat the raiders big deal. I want the Raiders to win.. but not for Palmer. I dont have that much allegiance for him. I want the RAiders to win for the fans and for the RAiders. For themselves.

  • DJ Johnny

Guys say “we don’t have the talent”, but we had enough to hang with Atl. on the road and enough to beat Pittsburgh.

Reece’s good day exposed the coaching staff for the inept group it is.

Criner exposed them as well, showing he can catch almost anything thrown his way. Maybe they ought to think about THAT for a minute.

Watch the highlights of Burris again; the ones where ALL HE IS DOING is rushing the QB and being very good at it.

Funny. I don’t recall in any of those highlights Burris covering receivers and making plays. You know why?…IT’S NOT WHAT HE DOES WELL.

Players have to be in the right positions. Burris is a pass rusher…period.

    There’s a reason Gannon didn’t play cornerback…IT WASN’T HIS POSITION.

None of them any difference makers dude, Miles burris was like the 5 draft pick , nobody picked up A Carter until 3 weeks into the season, S SPENCER HANSON P LEE < BARTELL < WHEELER< all came cheap cuz they suck , TB was the only player who was given a bigger contract, but same problme, guy performs big in a contract year and then forgets how to play the following year

I want em to win for the Raiders AND Palmer.

    I don’t expect it though.

In fact I predict as usual that DA will not have this team ready, and it’s gonna get loud and ugly….FAST.

You know with each embarrassing loss the Raiders have, Hue Jackson looks that much better.

How di Hue freaking Jackson get this horrible Raider team within a defensive stop of the playoffs?

    Hmmmmmm.

It was same BS , just getting through with a weak schedule , this team is not talented enough, Hue is not here, quit blaming the coaching, only KNapp and ST coach s8cks , I will give DA and other chance with full offseason in which they can bring some good players instead of cheap 1 year contracts due to salary cap issues

We been horrible 10 years running , only played good enough for 2 year stretch due to sweeping the division once and schedule being bad the rest of the years, quit crying for once, we didn’t beat any good teams those years, we are def going to need to get rid of stupid contracts AL D gave some players and bring in legit players

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

DJ im with u man. CRINER is being slept on. That dude has mad talent. Has the Vertical jump and catches everyting like he has velcro on his gloves. That guys is gonna be a player.

BURRIS is another man child. Everyone was talking crapp on him yesterday but he is a ROOKIE playing in a new scheme. When he rushes the passer look out.. that guy brings it.

I have faith in REGGIE. DA not so much. KNAPP ZERO

  • mcfadden20.

I have Faith in REG , DA, Tarver, rest can go into garbage, Kelly, Seymour, Mcfadden, Branch , Mcclain can go to garbage, need some young blood at DT, need real pass rushers at DE, need real safeties and need real CB’s

  • papertiger418

Do you guys think DA ever wishes he had stayed in Denver, where he’d have Manning to take the pressure off the defense and could get high whenever he liked?

  • papertiger418

He’d probably also get free pizza whenever he wanted, because Manning owns a bunch of Papa John’s franchises as part of his endorsement deal.

  • The Big Banana

DA is in over his head and has been put on notice.

Mark Davis has Gruden back to light the torch, and grants this interview where he states he’s not happy. Hmm…

why didnt mark go after gruden last year

Palmer will take a pay cut get real he is not going anywhere you heard what Mark Davis said about him.

Get over it already are you tards that desperate for something to talk about?

I admire Palmer for staying here knowing this was a total rebuild putting his head down and working diligently doing what the coaches ask of him.

Next year he and D Moore are going to light it up I am thinking 1800 yards for D Moore if it all works out.

We should get a high draft pick which we will trade down for several more picks. Cast offs should get sent packing yielding us another 2 or 3 draft picks all in all I would say by draft day in April Reggie will have accumulated 10 draft picks.

With that he will go about fixing the O-Line and the entire defense. If Palmer can get the amount of time Brees and Brady are getting back there to throw and we have a real running game established next year he will light up the sky and we will win the division

no, just for not having a clue as to who’s to blame and who’s not to blame.

  • nycraider

love the criner bandwagon. he catches 1 nice pass in a blow out and he’s the next tim brown. hope he is for all our sake. would like to see him create some separation in red zone or on third down.louis murphy had a better rookie year then him with jacarcus as his qb. lok what happened to him

  • dr_robert

uh, i’m gonna say palmer will be dealt. and good for him. i don’t think there is a quick fix and he’s being wasted here.

we need 12 picks going into the draft and he could get us maybe a 2nd rounder and a 6th. after 4800 yards and close to 30 td’s, a team like arizona might want him bad. i know larry fitzgerald would.

i say get tebow, mccoy, claussen, or cousins and have them compete with pryor.

or pick geno smith if he falls to us. well, he won’t have to fall far.

  • dr_robert

it has become very clear as to this team’s needs and problems.

    1) the running game was either the line’s fault or dmc’s fault or some of both. well, reece just answered that. we could use a player or two on the line but RB is solved.

    2) the passing game needs better protection, so the line still is an issue. we move the ball just fine between the 20′s, but we can’t score. part of that was the running game but also no redzone targets. streeter and criner give us hope there. i would think ausberry too, but knapp doesn’t seem to understand his personnel.

    3) run defense, particularly up the middle. new DT’s, MLB, and Safeties ar in order.

    4) no pass rush. at all.

  • beach

Bring back Jon Gruden, Mr. Davis. Then you will be my hero!

  • Derek

Allen and Knapp have slept on Chriner, Reece, DHB, maybe Pryor, Ausberry. Misused DMac and initially Palmer (with the WC offense). Twain Jones as never been used on a sweep, pitchout,or scuffle pass. Nothing in space t manipulate his speed. The speed of the wideouts has rarely been used for bombs and/or to draw penalties from DB’s who cannot possibly keep up with them. Most decent teams with a player like Pryor use him in option plays. Allen and crew have never used the guy once. Lining up Pryor and Dmac would have caused mass confusion and a change of pace from the typical vanilla Knapp offense.

Red zone offense is pathetic , despite the FAT the team has HUGE targets (Chriner, Ausberry, Myers, and Streater).

  • sirblitzalot

What a motley crew of losers! It will takes years to trade ourselves out of this abyss!!!

  • depcharger

the “D” grade for coaching is a little high. i would expect no higher than an “F”.

winning starts in practice, and these bozo’s are clearly not prepared.
