Grading the Raiders from the Saints game

By Steve Corkran
Monday, November 19th, 2012 at 12:50 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders off their performance against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Here is a look at how the Raiders graded out:

Pass offense

Carson Palmer (22-for-40, 312 yards) had his third straight game of 300 yards or more, but 113 of those were tacked on with the Raiders already trailing 35-10. Two interceptions were costly — one that Malcolm Jenkins returned 55 yards for a touchdown, the other that bounced off Brandon Myers in the end zone for a Saints interception. Palmer and Denarius Moore were barely in the same area code.
Grade: D

Run offense

Marcel Reece gave the Raiders steady yards on the ground, finishing with 103 yards on 19 carries as the Raiders rushed for 120 yards overall and a respectable 4.6 yards per carry. The Raiders got no surge on a first-and-goal play at the 1, with Reece getting stuffed for a loss, starting a sequence that ended in an interception.
Grade: B

Pass defense

Lance Moore got cornerback Michael Huff on a double move for a 38-yard touchdown inside of a minute left in the first half and later beat Ron Bartell for a 16-yard score. Drew Brees was a coolly effieicent 20-for-27 for 219 yards and no interceptions. Brees was not sacked. Miles Burris failed to cover tight end Jimmy Graham on a goal line play. Touchdown. Grade: D

Run defense

The Saints, not known as a big rushing team, gained 153 yards on 28 carries, averaging 5.5 yards per attempt. Mark Ingram had 12 rushes for 67 yards and a 27-yard touchdown run on the first offensive snap of the second half. Defense gave up runs of 27, 25, 19 and 14 yards. Rolando McClain had 10 tackles in the base defense.
Grade: D

Special teams

Coye Francies had a chance at a big kickoff return and fell at the 20-yard line. A 75-yard kickoff return by Travaris Cadet to open the second half swung momentum permanently to the side of the Saints. Sebastian Janikowski converted his only field goal attempt from 40 yards. Shane Lechler can’t catch a break kicking inside the 20 as everything rolls into the end zone. Grade: D

Coaching

Whatever the coaching staff is saying at halftime isn’t working. The Raiders have been outscored 123-34 in the third quarter. However, the loss to New Orleans had more to do with players getting beat by better players than it did with offensive or defensive play-calling. If the Raiders could have gotten out of their own way and taken a lead, they might have run the ball all day.
Grade: D

Dopey comment. Most players have a link to another team, somewhere. some more than one. You act like Palmer is God and the team bows in his presence. That, according to you, he should be rallied around? That it’s his SB? That all the team wants to make Palmer happy?

Actually they were 16th in the NFL in sacks, but that is slightly misleading when you have games like the first SD game where they have a 4th string LT getting abused.

Eagles started sucking after their longtime DCo Johnson retired or passed away . Not sure what happened to him

That is true! Jim Johnson passed away! After, they have never been teh same on D!

Yup, they were always a top 10 unit with him , which was 1 of the reasons they were always in the playoffs

And he’s lucky a lot of DBs can’t catch because he could’ve had at least two more.

    ****************************

Palmer’s the only QB lucky that DB’s can’t catch? Please, all DB’s can’t catch.

In fact, RGIII’s only incomplete pass yesterday was a sure fire pick 6 that Rodgers-Cromartie dropped.

Defensive players, not just DB’s, can’t catch, and drop INT’s every week in every game.

Brees threw a ball right to Desmond Bryant. Hit him in all 10 fingers and both palms. Dropped.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Brees and RG3 did that ONE time. Palmer actually Threw a pick-6 and almost threw another one near our goal line to go along with another near miss during the 1st drive. He does that sht a million times more than the other guys you’re talking about. Do me a favor, stick your nose in your almanac for geeks and tell me who the league leaders are in pick-6s the last 5 years . Honest question.

    “So ridiculous”???? Lets see:

He said Cam Newton would be the top pick in the draft and take the league by storm: He was and it happened.

He said that RG3 was the best QB in college football and would take the league by storm: He was and it happened.

He said that the Palmer trade was a bust the day it happened and that it would be a downgrade from what we had going with JC: It was and it has been.

What so “ridiculous”????? On the contrary, I think it’s time for you clowns to start taking notes when he posts!!!!

I admire Palmer for staying here knowing this was a total rebuild putting his head down and working diligently doing what the coaches ask of him.

Next year he and D Moore are going to light it up I am thinking 1800 yards for D Moore if it all works out.

We should get a high draft pick which we will trade down for several more picks. Cast offs should get sent packing yielding us another 2 or 3 draft picks all in all I would say by draft day in April Reggie will have accumulated 10 draft picks.

With that he will go about fixing the O-Line and the entire defense. If Palmer can get the amount of time Brees and Brady are getting back there to throw and we have a real running game established next year he will light up the sky and we will win the division

    Chi 25-20 #24
    KC 16-13 #27

Further proves my point that last years team wasn’t that good beside the record, we would have struggled to beat good teams again due to D getting worse with age of Kelly and Seymour and Loss of Wimbley

    —–
Here’s the list of teams we lost against and their O ranks
    —–

So far we have beaten 2 out of 3 really horrible O teams

    Miami LOSS
    JAX WIN
    KC WIN

Lost against 5 teams in top 10 O

SO even if Hue was here, same results, due to our D , which we never got to work on due to Salary Cap

I will admit O has regressed but i still don’t think results would have been different to the same day or worse D if you want to call it with the loss of wimbley, hard to get mad either cuz really AL left this team in salary cap mess, we couldn’t bring in any good player for our D

Wimbley was still our best pass rusher, and other 2 guys who had some sacks, are year older now Kelly and Seymour (ready to retire), Just saying that even if Hue was here , we would of probably had the same record due to inability of our D to stop good O’s , so i would give DA 1 more chance with a new OC, new ST coach , and offseason to bring some guys for D side

Need to trim the fat off this team as soon as the season is over. That means trade what little we have for picks (Dmac, Lechler & Palmer). Dump the overpaid, underachieving worthless garbage (Seymour, Kelly, McClain, Huff, Carlisle, Briesel, Bartell, Spencer, Leinart & Jones) This team might be worse than 2006, but coaches & staff are much better.

So tired of the loosing…you know?
    —–
How many god damn times are you people going spell the word ‘LOSING’ wrong?
    ===============================
Probbly az meny times as ewe ppl say “going spell” instead of “going to spell”.
    ——
No, I only did that once. The misspelling of ‘losing’ has become an epidemic in here.

    *********************

perhaps they really mean “loosing”, like as in i’m tired of the defense being so loose. we’re tired of loosing.

Palmer will take a pay cut get real he is not going anywhere you heard what Mark Davis said about him.

Get over it already are you tards that desperate for something to talk about?

Is McFadden20 telling everybody how stupid we are for complaining about another loss?

    ***************

no, just for not having a clue as to who’s to blame and who’s not to blame.

love the criner bandwagon. he catches 1 nice pass in a blow out and he’s the next tim brown. hope he is for all our sake. would like to see him create some separation in red zone or on third down.louis murphy had a better rookie year then him with jacarcus as his qb. lok what happened to him

  134. dr_robert Says:

uh, i’m gonna say palmer will be dealt. and good for him. i don’t think there is a quick fix and he’s being wasted here.

we need 12 picks going into the draft and he could get us maybe a 2nd rounder and a 6th. after 4800 yards and close to 30 td’s, a team like arizona might want him bad. i know larry fitzgerald would.

i say get tebow, mccoy, claussen, or cousins and have them compete with pryor.

or pick geno smith if he falls to us. well, he won’t have to fall far.

  135. dr_robert Says:

it has become very clear as to this team’s needs and problems.

    1) the running game was either the line’s fault or dmc’s fault or some of both. well, reece just answered that. we could use a player or two on the line but RB is solved.

    2) the passing game needs better protection, so the line still is an issue. we move the ball just fine between the 20’s, but we can’t score. part of that was the running game but also no redzone targets. streeter and criner give us hope there. i would think ausberry too, but knapp doesn’t seem to understand his personnel.

    3) run defense, particularly up the middle. new DT’s, MLB, and Safeties ar in order.

    4) no pass rush. at all.

Bring back Jon Gruden, Mr. Davis. Then you will be my hero!

  137. Derek Says:

Allen and Knapp have slept on Chriner, Reece, DHB, maybe Pryor, Ausberry. Misused DMac and initially Palmer (with the WC offense). Twain Jones as never been used on a sweep, pitchout,or scuffle pass. Nothing in space t manipulate his speed. The speed of the wideouts has rarely been used for bombs and/or to draw penalties from DB’s who cannot possibly keep up with them. Most decent teams with a player like Pryor use him in option plays. Allen and crew have never used the guy once. Lining up Pryor and Dmac would have caused mass confusion and a change of pace from the typical vanilla Knapp offense.

Red zone offense is pathetic , despite the FAT the team has HUGE targets (Chriner, Ausberry, Myers, and Streater).

What a motley crew of losers! It will takes years to trade ourselves out of this abyss!!!

  139. depcharger Says:

the “D” grade for coaching is a little high. i would expect no higher than an “F”.

winning starts in practice, and these bozo’s are clearly not prepared.
