Playing Bengals stokes ongoing debates about Palmer, Jackson

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, November 21st, 2012 at 3:08 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Well, here we are. The week has arrived when people can dredge up whether the Raiders made the right decision in firing coach Hue Jackson and whether the trade Jackson engineered for quarterback Carson Palmer was worth it or not.
Oh, and Sunday’s game against the Cincicnnati Bengals just happens to be Palmer’s first game against the team that selected him No. 1 overall in the 2003 NFL draft.
Make no mistake, it’s going to be fans and media doing most of the talking in the run up to the game. Jackson isn’t talking, Lewis isn’t shedding much light on Palmer turning his back on the Bengals, and Palmer is taking the high road.
“I’m not going to dive back into that,” Palmer said. “To me, this is three seasons later, two seasons later. That was in the past. I’m here now. I don’t want to dive into that.”
Palmer forced the Bengals hand last season by saying he would retire rather than play for them again. The Bengals said that they wouldn’t trade Palmer.
Ultimately, the Raiders pried away Palmer from the Bengals last season for a 2012 first-round pick and a 2013 second-rounder just before the trade deadline, in response to starter Jason Campbell suffering a season-ending collarbone injury.
The trade set off an ongoing debate as to whether the Raiders got fleeced and if Palmer is a better option than Campbell.
It says here, the Raiders had no choice, and who cares if they overpaid. They weren’t going anywhere with Kyle Boller as the starter.
Sure enough, Palmer guided the Raiders within one game of winning the AFC West and their first playoff berth in nine seasons.
Lewis said it looks as if Palmer is having fun with the Raiders. Palmer said he didn’t have any fun during his final season with the Bengals.
Palmer said he and former teammates have talked about how things ended in Cincinnati, without elaborating.
“I have seen guys, run into guys back in San Diego, talked, texted,” Palmer said. “Anybody that’s ever played for that ownership knows what I was doing and why I was doing it.”
Still, there remains a sizable faction bitter over the trade, with much of the venom directed at Jackson.
Lo and behold, Jackson ended up in Cincinnati, where is coaching the cornerbacks and helping out on special teams. One of his prized pupils is Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, the players selected by the Bengals with the first-rounder they received from the Raiders as part of the Palmer trade.
“He’s been great,” Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said of Jackson in a conference call. “He’s been a great asset to me, having spent the year again as a coordinator and then as a head coach. He sees everything from a completely different perspective than other assistant coaches and position coaches do. His knowledge of offense has been incredible to go along with our defensive staff.”
On and on Lewis went in extolling the virtues of Jackson, who was fired by the Raiders shortly after last season ended.
“He’s a great technician as a coach and he sees the details and he sees the big picture,” Lewis said. “That’s why he’s so special as a coach. He can see both the detail work you have to have to be great but he can also see the entire big picture. He’s done that same thing in helping with and working with the special teams and our special teams coach as he coaches his segments. He envisions those plays as almost offensive plays and so forth. He comes with that enthusiasm and everything. It’s been great.”
For Jackson’s part, he steered clear of delving into much about the Palmer trade and being fired by the Raiders.
“It’s really another football game,” Jackson told Bengals writers. “For me, it is. it has to be. You can’t get caught up in the emotional part of it because that’s not what this is about. This is about winning and losing. There’s a team that’s really hungry, very talented. They have some big-time players that are going to try to come here and win a game. And we’re finding ourselves and we have to do everything we can to win a football game.”
Lewis said he thinks Jackson deserves another shot at being an NFL head coach. It remains to be seen whether Jackson will get that opportunity.
Already, Jackson’s name has been mentioned as a possibility for the Cal coaching vacancy. Jackson coached at Cal earlier in his career.
Palmer said he is “excited” about the prospect of playing in front of the fans that once cheered his every move from 2003-10.
“It’s a big game,” Palmer said. “But it’s obviously a much bigger game for our team. We have to get a win. We’re going to fight, we’re going to grind this week. We have a lot of room for improvement, a lot of areas we need to improve on. Obviously, going into Cincinnati, it’s a big game.”
For McKenzie and the Raiders too. You can bet that McKenzie and owner Mark Davis want a victory Sunday for more reasons than the fact the Raiders are in the midst of a three-game losing streak.
Asked if he has any regrets about forcing his way out of Cincinnati, Palmer said: “No regrets.”
Let the debates continue.

– Most players that were here for either or both of Jackson’s two seasons with the Raiders held him in high regard. Naturally, there were those that didn’t warm to Jackson, for one reason or another.
Running back Darren McFadden enjoyed his best seasons under Jackson’s play-calling. He remains appreciative for the time and effort Jackson took in finding a way to get the most from McFadden’s ability.
“I felt like he helped me a whole lot, just building my confidence in the league and he gave me the opportunity to show folks I can go out there and run the ball the way I do,” McFadden said.
McFadden rushed for a career-high 1,157 yards in 2010 and 614 in seven games last season. Both seasons, he averaged more than 5 yards per carry. He hasn’t averaged more than 4.4 yards in any of his three other NFL seasons, including a 3.3 mark this season.
Jackson made a point of talking about how he pulled aside McFadden in 2010 and asked him which plays he liked to run and then relied upon those plays in games.
“I just felt he tried to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers on offense,” McFadden said, “and I felt like that was something he did with us well, and that’s something he can do anywhere that he’s at.”
McFadden said he and Jackson have exchanged texts since Jackson was fired and that if a team is willing to give Jackson another shot at being a head coach in the NFL that “they’ll have a great head coach.”
Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey is another player that flourished under Jackson’s tutelage.
Jackson said he and then-offensive coordinator Al Saunders determined the things that Heyward-Bey does best and concentrated on those things in games.
Heyward-Bey responded with career-highs in receptions (64), yards (975) and touchdowns (4) last season. Heyward-Bey has 28 catches for 440 yards and three touchdowns so far this season.
“He just saw the work I put in,” Heyward-Bey said. “He believed in me. He was the type of coach that, he will call plays because he wanted to see if you were going to make a play. He did that the years he was here.”
Heyward-Bey said he also enjoyed Jackson’s gutsy play-calling.
Middle linebacker Rolando McClain said he enjoyed the energy and passion that Jackson brought to the team. He certainly didn’t expect the Raiders to fire Jackson after an 8-8 season.
“I guess you never know what’s going to happen, especially not with this team,” McClain said. “I guess you never know what will happen. That’s just the business that we’re in. It caught me by surprise. I didn’t expect it.”

– No emotional send-offs for veteran linebacker Aaron Curry. At least not from coach Allen.
When asked whether Curry’s departure owed to Curry’s knee injuries or an inability to make the defense better, Allen wasted little time responding.
“We just didn’t feel like he was a fit for us moving forward,” Allen said, without elaborating.
Guess there really isn’t a need when the answer is that succinct.

– Wide receiver Denarius Moore and Palmer at times in recent games looked as if they were playing together for the first time.
Only one of seven passes directed for Moore against the Saints found the mark. Against the Buccaneers, a late pass by Palmer ended up in the arms of a Bucs defensive back, with Moore breaking toward the middle of the field, away from the ball.
Allen said everyone has a share of blame for Palmer and Moore not being on the same page as often as desired.
“It’s all of our responsibility,” Allen said. “First of all, all of us need to look internally at what we need to do better to make this thing work. And then, collectively, as a group, how can we work to make this better?”
Part of the issue also stems from Moore being a second-year player, still acclimating to the NFL and learning a new offense for the second straight season.
“Yeah, and that’s what happens when you have young players,” Allen said. “There’s a growing process, and Denarius is still continuing to grow and he’s going to continue to get better, but it’s part of the process.”
Palmer said he bears the brunt of the responsibility.
“I need to look at the film and see what happens and we need to sit down and talk about it,” Palmer said after the Saints game. “He’s our go-to guy. He’s our No. 1 receiver, he’s got a lot of plays for him and we haven’t had a ton of time on task and that’s why some of the miscommunication things come up.
“The guy had a bad hamstring injury all offseason, all training camp, there’s times it shows and it’s my fault. He’s a second-year guy, we need to do a better job getting on the same page with him, seeing things the way he sees ‘em and I need to improve in that aspect.”

– Allen said it’s possible that the vacancy on the 53-man roster created by waiving Curry on Tuesday will be filled by signing a player from the practice squad.

– Allen still isn’t sure when McFadden, Mike Goodson or Richard Seymour will be able to get back on the field. All he can do for now is remain hopeful. None of the three practiced Wednesday.
“Well, I don’t know when they’ll be back,” Allen said. “Hopefully they all will be back soon. All I can tell you is they are all rehabbing. Tyvon was out here practicing today. They’re going to rehab as fast as they can and when they’re healthy they’ll be back out here.”

    Agreed.

I like Geno. Would love to have him.

EJ though has the ‘intangibles’ is really tough, very smart, good athlete.

I’d love EJ and he could be had in the mid to late 1st I think. We could trade down and get him and a 2nd.

if tim tebow got a shot,

there is no justification for not giving pryor his shot
    =============================================

Yeah, but those are completely different circumstances. Denver moved up in the draft to take Teblows. They paid a lot for him and Dungver fan wanted to see what he could do. We didn’t pay a lot for Pryor. Playing in front of Teblows was Orton, who was a journeyman Q (at best) who came along as a throw in for the Jay Cutler deal. Orton played decently, but the Buncos were not winning. So fans, (primarily fundamental Christian fans) wanted to see what Teblows could do. Elway, Fox and co. knew he was not an NFL caliber player and put him in just to shut the fans up. Well, the rest is NFL history.

That is different from here. Here, we paid A LOT for an overall number one who is the undisputed starter. The starter has played well. There is little if anything to gain from benching Palmer, who we paid a lst and a 2nd for, and putting in a guy just to see what he can do to cater to a small group of seemingly foolish fans. (No offense). As I said, say Pryor plays poorly, well, you probably rushed him in there too soon and might have ruined the player. Let’s say Pryor plays lights out, well you just gutted a player you paid a lst and a 2nd for, now what do you do with him? Bench him? Trade him for a 7th rounder? Have a HUGE QB controversy? Not a lot of upside in this “play Pryor” scenario. More bad things can happen than good.

that is beside the point that i am making.

your comment that he ‘wasnt ready” to be an nfl qb because of mechanics and so on should be thrown out.

tebow had more questions that anyone i can remember yet he is on the feild leading a playoff run last year.

if tebow can have a chance pryor should too. the questions around pryor are nearly as drastic

No it isn’t because Teblows was primarily used for his running ability when he lst started. Didn’t he throw like seven passes in one of his starts? You are not going to win in the modern NFL that way.

If you want to say that you are basically going to use Terrell Pryor as a wildcat back with throwing options is kind of silly. As I have said for months now, what wins in the NFL is the strong, accurate, tough pocket passer. The Peyton, Brady, Rothleisberger, Eli type of player. We have one of those. To throw it all out and develop some gimmick offense, like Teblow that got figured out 6 games into his career? That is crazy.

That is the difference between college football and pro football. Look at Jamarcus Russell. Russell would carry the rock around his knees and then have a huge windup. That would work in college, but in the pro’s where DB’s routinely run 4.2-4.3 forties, taking a second+ to wind up, a DB could travel 10-12 yards. Which is exactly what happened. Guys who seemingly were open, we not only covered, the ball got picked. Same thing with Pryor. He has compacted his motion a lot, and that will help him.

A lot of you guys don’t seem to remember ALL THE PROMISES Jackson made NONE OF WHICH came true. Jackson talked a good game. That’s what he did. He was going to build a bully. He built a sissy. He was going to get the defense under control. They got worse. He was going to get the penalties under control. We were the most penalized team IN LEAGUE HISTORY! He did NOTHING OTHER THAN TALK. He was like that idiot troll earlier today who talked and got his ass kicked. Talked and got his ass kicked even worse. Continued to talk, but said nothing, and got his ass handed to him even more…..

Mark wants to put his stamp on it and do things his way rather than his dad’s way. From all accounts, they didn’t get along so well. Publically, mark will say the right things and keep the Raider tradition at least superficially alive.

Can either of you enlighten me as to what you are looking at, to even have a glimmer of hope that this team lead by this coaching staff has even a remote possibility of finishing strong, playing well at the end of this season?

    All i see is regression.
    =========================================

Honestly, no. But lets try. Holding Branch and Seymour out, might be able to give them a little life for the last quarter of the season. They are our two best defenders and frankly both of them are worn out. A couple or more weeks off has got to help.

Offensively the number one thing to me is McFadden has been completely useless. But Reece sure looked good. Getting Khalif Barnes back is going to help. If we could just get someone on the interior of the line to play well (Bergstrom, Nix?), that might shore up the line enough, with Reece or Stewart igniting the offense. Forget Moore, Criner is the guy who has to emerge along with Hagan and Streator. But the operative word in this whole thing is “might”.
    =======================
I did not go back and re-watch the NO game, hit delete a little faster than usual.

Did NO stack the box? I can’t count how many times McFadden has just secured the ball this year and there are already two defenders crushing him. He was being keyed on, whilst this O-line attempted to figure out the ZBS.

It appeared to me Reece had far bigger lanes to run in than I’ve seen all year.

    not so fast

tebow is a qb with big time passing issues yet he has had a chance to play many games and started

pryor is a better passer and he should also get his shot, and you cant use his passing game as a way to keep him off the field in a failed season

they are both qbs that came out with questions about their ability to throw the ball.

tebow was allowed to play qb and start

pryor who is a far better passer should also get the nod.

they both backed up established nfl qbs in losing seasons

allen saw tebow in denver and how it played out and that is why pryor has been in street clothes.

I suggested this at the beginning of the year that pryor would not lay because allen wanted to defuse any controversy before it started.

I think pryor has vastly under rated talent and if he does see the field there will be a controversy.

QB contraversy or not to have a talent like TP play well bodes extremely well for this org. A young talented QB drafted by the late owner is exactly what you want Palmer can’t play forever to have a young talented QB pushing him is exactly what this team needs desparately.

  125. ArmChair GM Says:

This season can be summed up with 3 words:

    Cronyism, Nepotism, Egotism.

-Cronyism in Allen hiring his golf buddy Greg Knapp to run the offense even though he clearly was not the best qualified to hold that position.

-Nepotism in Reggie Mckenzie hiring his twin brother to be the head of scouting.

-Egotism in Allen and Knapp refusing to devise schemes suited to the talents of his players but insisting that they run Knapp’s woefully inadequate version of the zone blocking scheme that has been a travesty and embarrassment since week 1.

Dennis Allen can kick rocks for all I care.

I was a big fan of the Reggie hiring at first, but now I am really starting to second guess him. He is a very mellow, low key guy and he is hiring people just like him (aka DA), and it’s making our organization soft.

It’s pretty obvious all the players are not happy with the current coaching staff from the way they are talking about Hue, and I don’t blame them. DA is a little pu$$y who has no emotion and no fire in him, and while he might be a great defensive coach, he is obviously not a good head coach because he doesn’t inspire the players like a good head coach does. He also hired some horrible coordinators and seems to just let them run things even when they are failing miserably.

We need a coach with some balls, who is not afraid to get pissed at players and coaches alike, and light a fire under his team. DA is obviously not that guy. I don’t see anybody playing inspired football out there except maybe 1 or 2 guys on each side of the ball. Not that I blame them when they have to answer to people like Greg Krapp who obviously don’t know what they’re doing.

-Hue lost 4 of last 5 games.

Agreed. And remember we are talking about 6-4 with our starting QB, RB, and WR all injured.

  134. SD-Raider Says:

Twocents: no, I don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, I just judge by his interviews and shows like sound FX on NFL network where it shows him mic’d on the sidelines of a game. He seems very intellectual and calm instead of passionate and firey, and I like the latter attributes more for an NFL head coach, especially a Raider coach. We need to bring back some attitude to this game. I’ll take penalties over these a$$ whoopings we’ve been getting any day.

The reason Hue’s team blew it at the end was solely because of the defense, a D in which he didn’t get to choose any of the coaches. Hue ran the offense and ran it damn well. If we had any sort of average D we would have made the playoffs last year.

    No Onecent.

Saunders is still on staff. Put him back in charge as the OC. Reinstitute the O-line scheme that most of these same players had been in for the previous two years, and that had proven results.

I see Palmer the same way Patriot fans saw their QB before Brady took over. Either play well enough to keep your job or else. The fault is Palmers if indeed Pryor outplays him and no on else’s…………period

    ********************************************************

Revisionist history, and inaccurate at that. Bledsoe was replaced because he was injured, and Brady played so well that he kept the starting job after Bledsoe recovered from his injury.

Bledsoe was very much appreciated by the fan base in New England, and there was even debate that he should have started the Super Bowl game that year.

    Apples and oranges.

The Raiders were in the exact same position on the opposite side of the ball. All they had to do was leave the offense in tact and focus on the defense and we would be at the very least tied with Denver for the division lead right now.

Hue Jackson is “po’ed” at team, wants more power

Raiders coach Hue Jackson didn’t take Oakland’s latest defensive collapse well.

While he occasionally made a weak effort to take responsibility for his team’s loss, Jackson generally threw his team under the bus in a manner you don’t normally see from head coaches.

“I’m po’ed at my team,” Jackson said after the game via the Oakland Tribune. “At some point in time, as a group of men, you go in the game, and you can say whatever you want about coaches, you win the game. Here’s your time. Here’s your time to make plays.

“We didn’t get ‘em stopped. And we didn’t make enough plays. So, yeah, I’m po’ed at the team. I’m also, like I tell them, I’ll always put it on me, but I am po’ed at my team. Because when you have those kinds of opportunities, you’ve got to do it, and we didn’t do it.”

Translation: I’ll always put it on me, except when I totally put it on you guys.

Jackson seems especially upset with his defense. (For good reason.) We wouldn’t expect to see defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan back next year.

“Chuck knows how I feel,” Jackson said. “I’m disappointed over there. I have been. It’s not like we haven’t had conversations. Chuck knows what I feel, and it’s not good enough. . . . When you play defense in the NFL, man, you got to hunt. You can’t give up 28, 29 points and expect to win.”

Translation: That’s Bresnahan’s defense. Got it?

Jackson’s solution for all the problems: More Hue Jackson.

“I’m going take a stronger hand in this whole team, this whole organization,” Jackson said. “There ain’t no way that I’m going to feel like I feel today a year from now, I promise you that. There’s no question. Defensively, offensively and special teams. I aint feeling like this no more. This is a joke. . . . Yeah, I’m going to take a hand in everything that goes on here.”

Translation: I haven’t fully considered all the implications of what could happen when the Raiders hire a personnel man to be my boss.

  148. Ghosttoothepost Says:

“I’m going take a stronger hand in this whole team, this whole organization,” Jackson said.

Somehow, to a new GM? Those words are a huge red flag.

That was before Reggie was hired, and Hue was obviously talking about picking his own coaches, especially D, which is something almost all head coaches have the luxury of. I feel like once Reggie was hired, they could have talked and gotten on the same page, and gone forward with Hue understanding Reggie was the boss, but I think after that bad interview he never even got a chance.

  156. Raider E Says:

Mark Davis played his hand to early when he let Hue go. I am not saying Hue is the greatest, and he may have deserved it, but letting Hue go just months after Hue traded for Palmer was a big mistake.

Think about it, Hue wanted Palmer to run his offense, but instead Hue gets fired and Palmer gets hung out to dry in an offense that doesn’t suit him.

They gave up too much to start over in a new offense.

Once the trade was done, the Raiders were committed to Palmer for 2-3 years.

Palmer has not been given a fair chance to validate the trade with the guy that brought him here in the first place.

The bulk of the responsibility of this terrible season rests on Mark Davis’s shoulders because he knows nothing about continuity of a head coach and his QB.

  174. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

It was exactly a year ago that the Raiders spent Thanksgiving Day in the midst of a three-game win streak throughout which they sat atop the AFC West.

Quarterback Carson Palmer, who had been plucked off the inactive list in October, was finding his timing and rounding into shape.

The field leader, Hue Jackson, was in the Coach of the Year conversation, even though a certain coach across the Bay was the front-runner.

And one year later, it’s all gone.

Oakland has fallen so far, so fast, nobody is better off. Not the Raiders, not Palmer, certainly not Jackson. Nobody has the look of a winner.

Jackson, who was fired by new general manager Reggie McKenzie, is an assistant in Cincinnati. Palmer is straining under the weight of turnovers committed while trying to carry the burden of an abysmal offense. And an Oakland team that needed an epic collapse to finish 2011 in a three-way tie for first place in the division — missing the playoffs by one play — is one of the five worst in the NFL.

Last November seems so long ago that even the memories are fuzzy. Most of the chatter about the 2012 Raiders implies the roster is rudderless and threadbare, failing mostly because the roster lacks talent and depth. There are kernels of truth to that.

Following the evidence leads to a question: How did the ‘11 Raiders, with mostly the same starting cast, manage to reach first place in the division at this time last

    ——————————————————————————–

    ——————————————————————————–
    year?

With the Raiders making a trip to Cincinnati this weekend, I made several attempts to obtain answers from Jackson. Maybe he would be willing to explain what was going right last November, if not what he thinks might be wrong this season. Maybe he could shed some light, perhaps offer pointers to Dennis Allen, his replacement in Oakland.

After several conversations and text-messages, Jackson concluded it would not be in his best interest to share his opinions about the Raiders — or about his chances at the Cal coaching job. Though it is clear that being dismissed by the Raiders still stings, Jackson was reluctant to address the team’s myriad issues.

“I think I will pass on making a comment at this point,” Jackson said via text message. “I think it’s best for me to say as little as possible.”

Jackson did, however, point out that the current state of the Raiders helps any case he might wish to state.

They’ve lost seven of 10 this season and were not really competitive in the last three losses, which have come in succession. McKenzie, whose first major move was firing Jackson, is in the early stages of a comprehensive rebuilding of the organization. Allen, hired from Denver, is 10 games into the task of proving he’s the man to fix the franchise.

But, really, how much rebuilding and fixing should be necessary for a team that was so close to the 2011 playoffs?

It figured the Raiders might be better equipped to improve this season than last.

Running back Darren McFadden had developed into a star, though plagued by injury. Darrius Heyward-Bey, a first-round vanity project of late former owner Al Davis, emerged from Bustville to become a functional wide receiver. Fellow wideout Denarius Moore flashed tremendous promise.

Unlike 2011, this team would have a full offseason program and training camp, with Palmer participating throughout.

All the 2011 Raiders needed to reach the playoffs was an ordinary defense — only Buffalo in the AFC allowed more points — and surely in 2012 they could be at least ordinary under former defensive coordinator Allen.

But Oakland’s defense has been inconsistent against the run and worse against the pass. The improvement that seemed apparent in mid-October has dissolved into the same familiar rut of ineptitude seen last season and so many seasons before.

Two years after Jackson was installed as offensive coordinator and solved Oakland’s long-standing problem scoring points, that problem is back with a vengeance. The unit is a mess. Palmer is lost, so is Moore. McFadden was ineffective before sustaining an injury two weeks ago. DHB once again looks like a backup.

No doubt Jackson, whose coaching career was upended, believes the Raiders could have avoided these relapses had he returned and that everyone could have been satisfied.

The perception of Jackson as audacious and swaggering is understandably reinforced by his unwavering self-confidence. Is it possible he had reason to feel good about what he was doing, and where the Raiders might be headed?

They were winning behind a quarterback, Jason Campbell, few believed in before he sustained an injury, winning despite a defense coached by Chuck Bresnahan, with strict oversight from Al Davis.

Jackson did acknowledge the deepest cut was not having the opportunity to assemble a defensive staff. He insists his candid end-of-season comments about making sweeping changes were spoken not as a megalomaniac GM but as a coach finally in position to identify and hire assistants of his choosing.

We know this: In the 17 years since returning to Oakland the Raiders have employed 10 head coaches, two of which made impact that was immediate and positive. Jon Gruden, was traded after four seasons, none of which resulted in a losing record. Jackson was fired after one 8-8 season.

Gruden never threw stones, and Jackson is unwilling to launch his own.

But once again, the evidence reveals a franchise scrambling for answers and sinking in the wake of change.

i think losing 4 out of 5 combined with how hue handled himself got him fired. he had plenty of excuses and challenges. agreed..
    _______________________________________________________

So with this being said, what the hell is Dennis Allen’s excuse???

He had job security, control of the coaches and player personnel, a GM, and ALL of his STARTING offensive weapons from the previous year, healthy to begin the season. And what has he done with all of that?

Made it worse than the last two years…smh
    —————————————-
2012 the year of the excuse, 2013 there are none. reggie.. and DA have alot to prove.. hue’s personality/ego/ was the biggest reason he got fired. maybe that the difference bt him and DA.

  177. DJ Johnny Says:

We can debate this all we want but here we sit at 3-7 and PLUMMETING to ever worse depths and right now the media is embracing the idea that it was a BAD decision to fire Hue…regardless of his “rant” at the end of the season.

    Your record is everything.

Hue was 8-8 and DA is 3-7 and falling…hard….with basically the same team.

This is not just a bunch of short sighted, impatient Raider fans saying this like some want to believe and accuse. The media has grabbed hold of this idea as well.

I don’t know why ANY real Raider fan is bending over backwards to defend DA right now.

Forget about Hue. Why defend DA? What has he shown you to believe for ONE SECOND he is gonna do anything other than what he’s done? All he’s given us is horrible, embarrassing, humiliating losses every damn week.

What indication does anybody have that he’s gonna “right the ship”?

DA has impacted ZERO on the defense. Hue would coach circles around KNAPP/ DA. KNAPP was some qb coach watching HUE coach his ass of against the Texans last year.

The only time Pryor should get on the field for Carson Palmer is 1. To keep Palmer from taking a beating in blowout games in the last minutes . Maybe some time in the last regular season game . Pryor had a few good plays in preseason . The rest of his play was like a chicken running around with his head cut off! Palmer has been one of our only bright spots! He has scored enough points to win most our games his year despite all of the cap he has had to deal with. Knap , O Line , receivers etc…… Coaching and poor personnel decisions (old and new)resulting in this horrific pitiful excuse of a defense has let this team down! Let’s not mention special teams! .There is another list of stupid decisions made too long too list! Bottom line is Palmer is the best thing we have had since Gannon at QB. And unless Pryor can tackle , cover receivers and return puts and kick-offs he isn’t going to win any games either! Crap Brady couldn’t win here either!

Look at how Hue changed after Al died.

All of a sudden he thought he was the face of the franchise. Acting all that in front of camera’s. Benching players, then lying about how it came about. Having camera’s follow him into getting a pedicure. Telling everyone that not only did he deserve more responsibility, but EXPECTED MORE RESPONSIBILITY IN NOT JUST THE TEAM, BUT THE WHOLE ORGANIZATION.

Even Hue admitted he was out of line, and should not have ever made those comments.

How come some of you are so slow in grasping simple things?
Or does that question confuse you?

Not to a new GM, it doesn’t.
Last thing a new GM wants is a head coach sabotaging him, talking behind his back, or second guessing what he does.
That year end record included a complete team meltdown the last month of the season, with players mumbling about Hue running things. And Hue becoming a loose cannon.

Damn sad that many here are arguing a team that collapsed and ended up 8-8 was something they miss.

Has nothing to do with today’s record. Both records sucked.

If DA was ticked about Curry’s tweet in praise of Gruden, then he’s incensed at what he’s reading about this praise of Hue.

    Change your glasses.

Yes, it’s the middle of the season, but the only reason it’s brought up is because we’re going into Cincy, with Cincy’s previous qb, while Cincy has the Raiders previous HC.

Regardless of the year, coaches and players always play the politically correct card when discussing someone they previously played with/under. Only an idiot would burn that bridge, never knowing for sure if you might be on a team with that player/coach.

Lots of comments out there, from players, questioning Hue last year. Same with most of the posters from here.
You just choose to ignore them.

  211. DJ Johnny Says:

Ghost, The fact we folded at the end of last season is not a point lost on me.

IMO it was the DEFENSE that was the culprit.

Hue has to shoulder the blame mostly since he was HC.

I’m not saying Hue was Lomardi incarnate, i’m saying this team right now is an embarrassment and a national joke…again, and despite folding at the end last yr….we at least were not a joke.

I don’t like the team i root for to be a joke.

    CARSON PALMER today on hue

He’s a phenomenal play-caller, phenomenal play-caller,” Palmer said of Jackson. “Does a great job of keeping defenses off balance, surprising defenses with some new sIt’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. Hue will be a head coach again because he’s a great leader. He understands enough about the game to be a head coach, but he’s also passionate. Guys follow him.”

Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour said Jackson’s former players in Oakland have “a lot of respect” for him.

“So I’m sure we’ll give him a hug after the game,” Seymour said. “He’s a guy that we have a ton of respect for. He was a heck of a play-caller for sure. And he loved his players. That’s something that we’ll take from it.
tuff. I thought he was a great head coach.”

I didn’t like hue being fired, but I just excepted it. I was excited when Big Mack and DA came aboard. I will give Reggie some time but DA inspires little confidence. I think the statements made by the players in Corks right ups are damming and really show the players true feelings about DA. I hope DA sees this article. He has some real soul searching to do. I believe he is losing key players confident with each loss. I’m not for consistent coach changing but I feel that if this slide continues Big Reggie will have to fire him. DA needs to change is philosophy and put his players in the best position to succeed. Fellow Fans, its up to us to let this organization now were unhappy with this pull and we will not tolerate garbage on the field and garbage responses and excuses at the pressers.

I can accept losing if I see there’s a bigger picture but as of right now I see a team with no identity, with no heart, still making dumb penalties. Players Grossly misused. SMH. Al Davis had his flaws in his later years but at least we knew he wanted to win. As simple as his defense was it didn’t get beat down like DA defense. This new leader ship are hell bent on keeping things the same while excepting different results. Now that my friend is insanity. Please Reggie, cam you lead us back to respectabilty, we were headed on that path before you came, no were back to being the laughing stock of NFL. SMH

  214. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

When Jackson was hired in 2010 as Oakland’s offensive coordinator, he often traded friendly barbs with the defensive backs during practices.

“Me and Hue have a good relationship,” Raiders safety Tyvon Branch said. “I’m pretty sure he’s telling the offensive guys, ‘Oh yeah, we got to attack him.’ We’ve got a good competitive spirit. It’s going to be good to go against Hue. I’m pretty sure he’s got an in-depth report on everybody.”

seymour, like Palmer, expects Jackson to get another NFL head coaching job.

“Absolutely,” Seymour said. “I think he has those qualities. I mean, we were one game away from the playoffs last year. I think he did some really good things, and maybe — it wasn’t all perfect, either. He was a guy I knew went to bat for us as players, so I think at the end of the day you respect that.”

“I guess you never know what’s going to happen, especially not with this team,” Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain said. That’s just the business that we’re in. It caught me by surprise. I didn’t expect it.”

Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey made huge strides under Jackson, especially last season.

“He just saw the work I put in,” Heyward-Bey said. “He believed in me. He was the type of coach that will call plays because he wanted to see if you were going to make a play. He’s gutsy. He has confidence in his guy over whoever is defending him. A 50-50 ball, he thinks we’re going to come down with the ball. … You like that as a player.”

Raiders safety Mike Mitchell, who is from the Cincinnati area, said he’s looking forward to seeing his former coach.

“I knew Hue before I even got to the NFL, just mutual family friends, so it will be good to see him again. He was a great guy, nice guy, glad to have him as a coach. I know he’s going to be excited to kick our butts. So we’re going to be even more excited to meet that challenge.”

  219. DJ Johnny Says:

Seymour saying “it wasn’t all pefect either” is not an indictment on the former coach. It’s obvious. They lost at the end. Of course it wasn’t perfect.

Interview Per Vic Taufar with HUE. Well if it comes down to tackling count the raiders out lol

Former Raiders coach Hue Jackson, now an assistant defensive backs and assistant special teams coach with the Bengals, met with the Cincinnati media today. Here are some things he touched on, a few days before facing his old team from a year ago:

    ^ On Carson Palmer:

“He’s playing great. I think they have a really good player. I said that when he came to Oakland, and I still feel that way now. Carson’s a really good football player. There’s not a throw he can’t make.”

^ Giving the Bengals inside stuff on the Raiders:

“I am, but it’s not about that. We have great coordinators here. I maybe can shed some light on a thing or two here or there, but at the end of the day it’s going to be two really good football teams out there playing and they’re going to do everything they can to win and we’re going to do everything we can to win. It comes down to who wants it the most and blocking and tackling and catching and running and all those things you do during football games.”

^ The Raiders being a pass-first team now:

“Honestly I don’t want to comment because I’m not there. I don’t know exactly what’s going on. I know they have some very good players, I know the quarterback is playing extremely well. They’re rallying around him. Carson’s there to throw the ball because he knows how to throw the ball, and they have some weapons there. I’m not surprised. That’s a really good football team. They have some talent there and they’re throwing it all over the yard.”

    ^ On fullback Marcel Reece:

“He’s tremendous. I’ve said that. I think he’s a defensive matchup nightmare because he can do so many things well. The guy can run with the ball — obviously he proved that last week — he can catch it and run with it and he can block. He’s a talented, three-dimensional football player and he’s just blossoming now. I just kind of opened the can, and now they’re taking it to a whole other level. So they’re doing a good job with him.”

^ On this week’s game being special:

“Honestly, it’s really another football game. For me, it is. it has to be. You can’t get caught up in the emotional part of it because that’s not what this is about. This is about winning and losing. There’s a team that’s really hungry, very talented. They have some big-time players that are going to try to come here and win a game. And we’re finding ourselves and we have to do everything we can to win a football game.”

^ On coaching on the defensive side this year:

“It’s been great. Not very often do you get that opportunity. To be on the other side of the ball for 10 years, you get to look at it from a different viewpoint. I think everybody should have that opportunity to do that. Maybe not in the circumstances I’ve had to do it, but I think it’s good to learn. To me, that’s something I now can add to myself as a coach. I’ve really enjoyed coaching and being over there on defense and working with the defensive backs and helping on special teams. It’s really broadened my thought process as a football coach, so it’s really been great.”

    ^ More on Palmer:

“He can spin the ball like nobody can. He can throw a football and throw it well. I know the criticism of turnovers and the things that people say, but no one knows. I mean I don’t know if the receivers weren’t in the right spot or protections. I mean a lot of things go into interceptions that I don’t think people truly understand. But at the end of the day this is a really good football player. …

There’s other people that can throw it, but trust me, there’s not many than spin it like he can. He can really spin a football.

^ Is Palmer the same guy he was in 2005, his best season:

“I think he’s probably better, because he’s more mature. He probably understands the league a lot more. You’re not going to fool him with too many things. He’s probably seen it all and done it all. Again, he’s playing like everybody knows he can play. I know there’s a lot of yards there, and people will dispute that for whatever their reasons are, but when I watch him on tape, I see a really good football player.”

^ Is Palmer all the way back after knee and elbow injuries:

“He’s beyond that. He was beyond that a year ago. The guys’ tough, he a competitor, he takes care of his body, he loves the game, he works at it. Again, at the end of the day, he’s one of the guys in this league that you would like to have him because you know what he brings. He’s going to work every day and give you an honest day’s work.”

^ On being back together with Marvin Lewis:

“Me and Marvin go back a long way … I can talk to him and say things that maybe I wouldn’t say to anyone else. … So that part’s been really fun. And that’s what’s helped me grow. I’m probably a much better football coach than I was a year ago, and probably will be as I continue to go through this process.”

^ On getting a coordinator or head coach job next year — and being mentioned for the Cal opening:

“Whatever the next step is in my life is going to unfold. I try not to worry about any of that right now. What I’m trying to do is we’re worried about the Oakland Raiders, and that’s where I am right now. Try to take it just one step at a time. Whatever the future holds, it holds. I can’t worry about it at this point.”

^ On college job being intriguing:

“At this time what’s intriguing is beating the Oakland Raiders. That’s the only thing I can think about at this point.”

I just detailed how players and coaches always have praise (or say nothing at all) regarding players/coaches. Rarely if ever do you see someone stupid enough to say what they feel. It’s always “don’t say something that will make headlines”. THEY TEACH THAT TO ROOKIES THE FIRST WEEK THEY ARE IN THE NFL.

Now, considering I already stated it, and you asked, and I had to restate it, it’s very obvious it’s YOU THAT IS CHOOSING TO ONLY READ WHAT FITS YOUR AGENDA.

As I recall, some players, when asked how it was to play under Hue, stated “NO COMMENT”. Now, would you like me to pull those up for you?
don’t know why I would, considering you pick and choose what you want to believe, ignoring facts.

I know this hurts ya, down deep, but Hue just wasn’t a very good head coach.

for fun? When I feel like it? I’ll pull up some posts from posters from here, back then, stating the exact same thing.

    MYTHBUSTERS – OAKLAND RAIDERS EDITION

MYTH: Hue Jackson lost the team at the end of last year and there’s no way he could’ve come back because of that.
TRUTH: This was a popular but totally unfounded excuse cooked up by fans and media speculation. Never did a single player from the 2011 team say or even suggest this. To the contrary, Seymour, Jacoby Ford, Housh and Carson Palmer expressed shock and disbelief at Hue’s firing. For further proof against this BS myth, read Steve’s above blog entry.

MYTH: Sure, Carson may be on pace for nearly 5,000 yards and 30 TDs, but that’s only because of garbage-time stats he’s amassing because the Raiders are losing so badly all the time.
TRUTH: Palmer has just 83 total passing yards more in the second half of games than the first half (about 1,470 to 1,553). He has an identical 1st and 2nd half QB rating. This is just one of those lazy assumptions reporters and analysts make because it’s easy to assume it’s true — but it’s pure myth. This is one of those classic whack-a-mole jobs by analysts who will withhold any credit from Palmer because the preordained storyline was that the Raiders paid too much for Palmer. Forget the actual facts. Forget that the guy is far and away the Raiders’ MVP and has had to completely carry the team on his back at times. Forget that he has to play with the worst defense in the NFL and that the once-proud running game has been turned to mush and the special teams has been a hot dumpster fire at times and that the o-line has regressed horribly. Nope. Palmer must be failing, they say. But he’s not.

Fair points on Seymour, but the fact DA is… young i guess is a plus. I thought it was when we got him at least.

DA’s biggest gig though was as DC for Denver.

I wouldn’t call the 20th ranked defense being “uber successful” and giving up 45 pt’s to NE in the playoffs successful either.

  272. GreatWhiteRaider Says:

I think people on this blog are just a smaller sample size of the entire NFL? I remember reading that about half the people who have worked with Hue thinks he’s a clown and the other half swear by him. So the reality has to be somewhere in between?

Speaking of reality – Hue is gone Knapster is here and instead of worrying about coulda woulda shoulda I’ve decided to change my focus to the future and to me the big questions are:

We all know there will be a big roster over haul – will that include McFadden and Palmer?

I totally expect Reggie and the coaching staff back. But what if this season gets WAY out of hand? Can the new regime really come across as legit if they don’t hold Coordinators accountable who; can’t move the ball, or stop people on the other team with the ball?

My guess is a blood letting of players and the current staff use their “get out of jail free” cards until Reggie has an entire draft class and off season.

Speaking of Reggie (I don’t live in the Bay Area) does he ever speak to the media? Very interested to hear a take from him.

The other (Dennis Allen) comes in with a scheme touting how it worked in other places and the team/players regress. Why try fixing something that was never broken (lunacy)then sticking with the failed scheme long after it’s clear it’s not working.

Dennis Allen is not a decent NFL HC and NEVER will be. Wasting time with that guy is ignorant.

Bag on Hue all you want , but when Al died Hue was alone and took responsibility. He didn’t run from it , he embraced it. He took the players Al gave him and wanted to win. Winning is all that counts and Hue had that mentality. You anti- Hue people can have DOA and Big Dummy , who are zombies that have nothing to say and play it safe.

Hue took risks because it was the only way we were going to win. Win or die trying instead of being a system team with no fire and inferior talent getting out coached and out played.

Not talk about getting better each week and execution , which just gets worse each week

TRUTH: Jacksons offense went almost HALF A SEASON SCORING ZERO THATS RIGHT ZERO SECOND HALF POINTS. DUMB LUCK ALONE, would score more more points than Jackson

Got our team to play hard (even with big injuries)

Oh puh-lease. 0-5 errrrr, 1-4 down the stretch when everything matters is not having your team playing hard. Unless when you say playing hard you mean sucking ass.

Made all of us including the team believe. made us all believe? I sure as sh** didn’t believe and neither did the .200 winning team in the end.

Gave us swagger and a Raider old school mentality. Actually, that was Tom Cable. Halfway thru the season that swagger was gone.

Took chances on O. No, he took chances on special teams. And opponents caught up to him, and that
    didn’t work either.

  335. Los Raida Locos Says:

The reason DA wants to rid all the players except for this years rookies is because if you played for Cable or Hue, you know what a coach that can fire you up to play football is like. No wonder this team can’t buy into the DA/knapp con game.

  339. The Mack Says:

OK so what’s the point of practice then Seymour???? It means nothing I guess. Its impossible to evaluate a players abilities in camp huh? Oh ye and game film doesn’t matter at all right? You know from the previous year when those “real bullets” are flying? And I guess he just was absent when he coached against the raiders to get an idea of what this team was capable of last year right? Gtfoh I.don’t know what I’m talking about? Pshhh… you’re just making excuses for this clown and lame ones at that. He has players that can play he just doesn’t have the Witt’s to get the best out of their abilities because he’s a horrible HC. We all know Smack is capable of more than 3 yards a carry, we all know D Moore is a is a capable really reciever and the list goes on. I know I can’t convince you other wise but sorry to tell you buddy you’re. Wrong. DA is a fraud.

  340. Los Raida Locos Says:

When Palmer beat the Chargers last year in San Diego with the no huddle, it was because Hue unleashed him. Hue had the brains to see what he had in a QB. Hue woulda been intent on building a team around Palmer. If our defense last year wasn’t a leaky s.o.b., we’d been 11-5, 12-4. knapp has tried to force feed Palmer and the rest of a decent offense a scheme that chains the players to failure. And DA has allowed this. It takes a great coach to bring out the best in a QB (Hue and Palmer, and the list is huge). Coaches need to sh*t can the ZBS. And don’t say “Oh, look what Reece did against the Saints’. Saints run D is awful.

  341. The Mack Says:

Smack. Is supposed to be Dmac* typo

  342. Los Raida Locos Says:

Wonder if DA has a game plan for the Bengals? What a bunch of fckng horse sh*t to see what this season has become. What is evident know with these ‘pipe dreams’ will only get worse. We had a horrid defense last year and we got worse. Really? Is that all you got? We had a promising offense ready to get better. And what the fck just happened.

  343. BabySlash Says:

    S. Bush. Palmer came in off the couch and we still had a better offense than this year with a full training camp. If you think that DA is better than Hue that’s fine with me. I have my opinion. Now you can go back to your crusade against the trolls lol

  344. Los Raida Locos Says:

Well, here we are. The week has arrived when people can dredge up whether the Raiders made the right decision in firing coach Hue Jackson and whether the trade Jackson engineered for quarterback Carson Palmer was worth it or not.

    ———————————

Getting Palmer was a bold and correct move by Hue Jackson. And rest assured the rest of the Raider brass had to sign off on it.

Firing Hue was just as wrong then as it is now. Al Davis never did anything as stupid as this in all his time with the Raiders.

  345. BabySlash Says:

Bottom line is all semis and even trolls in here KNEW that Knapp would suck ! We all knew this because we’d seen it before. We knew who we was.

DA blew it right there. All credibility gone.

  346. BabySlash Says:

McFadden was rocking and exploding under Hue. He could bust loose at any time and was punishing defenders by delivering a blow with his pads or stiff arm . Now he runs like a confused guy trapped in the backfield and runs out of bounds.

All scheme! He is a tough guy who ran hard and was feared.

  347. BabySlash Says:

McFadden , DHB and Moore were given rising players who were explosive. Reduced to chumps because of lame coaching.

  348. Los Raida Locos Says:

“I felt like he helped me a whole lot, just building my confidence in the league and he gave me the opportunity to show folks I can go out there and run the ball the way I do,” McFadden said.
McFadden rushed for a career-high 1,157 yards in 2010 and 614 in seven games last season. Both seasons, he averaged more than 5 yards per carry. He hasn’t averaged more than 4.4 yards in any of his three other NFL seasons, including a 3.3 mark this season.

    ——————————-

Well that just might be McFaddens ticket outta here. Good for him for having the balls to let DA/knapp know the truth.

  349. BabySlash Says:

Los Locas. Unfortunately we are a “system” team now where talent comes second to fitting in. The Raiders died with Al

  350. Los Raida Locos Says:

  352. Boz Hammerhorn Says:

All right guys, here’s a little turd nugget.

I’ve got a inside source that overheard a ’someone’ talking about Allen has to win in Cincy on Sunday or he may get canned. Interim HC would be Knapp, lame duck all the way. Also got a inside tip that Gruden has been ‘dinig’ quite a bit with the Davis family, and one thing that leaked is if Gruden takes the HC job, the entire staff except for Willie Shaw is gone. Saunders may remain if Gruden wants him for OC. Another sorce from the inside told me that Amy is just about ready to reveal a football only new stadium deal right where the O sits now. Raiders will play at Cal for the next two years. My insider says the suits are so worried about losing the fan base, the only thing she feels will keep it all together is the new stadium, which makes sense considering the current state of the Raiders. Enjoy that little turd nugget while I’m trying to pry some info about who the new DC will be. But thats gonna take some expensive wine and a fine meal first, and maybe a little good old fashioned back seat of the car pole fishin.

  353. Boz Hammerhorn Says:

    Another little turd nugget here.

My insider says she has heard rumors of Davis and Reggie arguing, like alot. Then Allen gets called in and gets it doble teamed my Davis and Reggie. So he may tank the game in Cincy just so he can get fired. DA thinks the players have quit on him, but Reggie and Davis aren’t buying it. Mark isn’t happy about the regression as you all know, but Reggie is pissed because Allen ain’t gettin it done. My source tells me Allen was pleading to fire knapp, but Reggie and Davis would have nothing to with that. Doesn’t make sense, but DA doesn’t have the gonads to fire knapp, and Reggie and Mark want him too. Talk about a conundrum. Wow, and the irony of it all. I’m trying to pry more out of my inside source, but she is only giving me a little bit at a time, probably because she feels if she tells it all, I’d have to dump her like a hot potato. But I’ll please her with some teasin and squeezin, let her go for a joy ride on my thrust rod and see what that gets. But I’m sure with a little more wine, another round of animal love and some ‘hard knox’, she’ll be spillin all the beans, and then some.

I’m sure the verbal attacks and snide remarks will be forthcoming, but I heard the exact same thing, from a conversation I had with a VERY credible source as well.

I believe you Boz. The Raiders are staying in Oakland. Coliseum City will be a reality, with or without the A’s.

  355. Boz Hammerhorn Says:

One more turd nugget before Itake the plunge.

My inside source says Al Lacosale may be back to assist Mark on day to day operations. That would be a good thing. She agrees. Not that I care what she thinks, I just want info. But I can’t satisfy her. She is a non stop nymph that is wearin me down to the bone, or whats left of it. Damn brahs, I’m gonna have to pull out a machine just to keep he happy so I can get a little sleep. She is ‘drying up my well’. I tell ya, information don’t come cheap. My johnson feels like it’s being ripped right outta the socket. Talk about a nad soakin, word. I’m gonna need a 10 gallon bucket of crushed ice and a bottle of Aloe Vera. Come to think of it, I don’t want to know anything anymore. My weiner is all petered out. A seven hour erection is all I got, and she doesn’t want to stop. She gonna have to find someone else to buy her dinner tomorrow night. Damn.

  356. The Mack Says:

We fired a coach last year who did not make the playoffs. That coach is now an assistant for our next opponent. An opponent with whom we traded a 1st rounder for our QB. The QB who hated the opponent’s ownership so much he forced a trade.

    Who made the right decision?
    Raiders for firing Hue
Raiders trading high draft pics for a “real” QB
    Bengals for hiring Hue
Bengals for receiving those draft pics?

On Sunday it will be settled on the field. The ball does lie.

  360. raidertalk Says:

    the ball does *Not lie.

  361. raidertalk Says:

I have some sympathy towards the “play Pryor” position if we have nothing left to play for.
BUT we do have some young receivers that could benefit from a veteran QB, so there could be some benefit to keeping Palmer in there. If we throw TP in there the WRs will have to start from square-one with a rookie QB. That could hinder the WRs development.
Last time we paired rookie WRs (murphy Shilens,DHB) with a rookie QB (Jamarcus)–IT was total disaster.

  362. GG Says:

“As more and more teams embrace the concept of adjusting offensive philosophies to suit the skills of quarterbacks who thrived at the college level, look for more teams to embrace young quarterbacks as they search for the rarest and most important commodity in football — the franchise quarterback.”

    —-

except in Oakland where the HC/OC work hard to hold talent down.

  363. raidertalk Says:

This year the excuse was no 1st/2nd rounder draft pic; no time to recruit a proper Offensive coordinator and no salary-cap room.

This off season we will have plenty of time to scoop up talent on the offensive coordinator position, so there should not be any excuses as to why the coaching is off.

We will at least a 1st rounder so there should be less of an excuse for talent drop-off; however draft picks do take time to develop

I’m not sure about the Salary-Cap next year, but hopefully it is more manageable so as to be less of an excuse for the lack of talent.

  364. raidertalk Says:

The problem with Mcfadden then and now is his fragility. When Hue was able to set him loose, he got injured. Then, this year after he got a hundred yard game–boom injured again. It just seems that with Dmac its pick your poison either the scheme is bad or he gets injured. I think our best bet is to get a back that can deliver in short yardage situations and pair him up with a speedster back with good hands.

there is no justification for not giving pryor his shot
    =============================================

Yeah, but those are completely different circumstances.

    ==============

that is beside the point that i am making.

your comment that he ‘wasnt ready” to be an nfl qb because of mechanics and so on should be thrown out.

tebow had more questions that anyone i can remember yet he is on the feild leading a playoff run last year.

if tebow can have a chance pryor should too. the questions around pryor are nearly as drastic

    *****************

maybe this is the problem with mistic. he thinks it’s a playground game and it’s “unfair” if pryor doesn’t get to play like some of the other kids.

look man. the kid isn’t anywhere near ready, and there’s no reason in the world for him to play over palmer right now.

    get…..over……it

  366. dr_robert Says:

according to mistic, EVERY qb should get a chance. otherwise, teams just aren’t being fair.

My hope for the day is that everyone finds something to be thankful for and that you enjoy the day with friends and family and that you have a huge feedbag attached to your head

    Happy Turkey day

  368. GG Says:

There’s nothing to be gained from starting Palmer here on out. There’s no way we’re going to make a run for a Wild Card spot the way this team is playing and coaching. Even if by some miracle we win 2 in a row at some point in our remaining schedule, we’ll drop too many games here and there to get eliminated. There’s absolutely zero consistency there to find that late-season momentum to surge for a playoff a la Giants.

It’s like Allen/Knapp are still drawing up the same tired gameplan and starters to try to get them to gel, to get them to find that efficiency and grasp of the new schemes that has been sought since pre-season. They’re like still in training camp mode 12 weeks into the season, trying to find that moment when special teams, defense and offense all click.

What I saw of him vs Saints his arm is on the wane anyway.

You’ll know if the coaches got the message or not if Pryor is activated and promoted to #2, to allow him to come into the game in the second half to get some drives in preparation for a start the following week.

If the coaches still have Pryor inactive, and we see them over-working Reece for 20 carries and running 20 routes, whilst Taiwan and Stewart get a handful of snaps, and Ausberry and Criner seldom see snaps…then it’s apparent the coaches are still too scared, too rigid, too stubborn, too bereft of imagination, to shake things up like Allen has been promising for about a month now with his “we’ll continue to re-evaluate everything” line. Allen/Knapp too insistent to keep bashing their heads against the wall, to keep grinding away their tired and predictable gameplan and formation packages.

Allen like pushing Reggie for “another week” “hopefully this time” the season’s plan/schemes/personnel clicks.

  369. GG Says:

Btw, Mark Davis is smart enough to know he can’t create a lame-duck HC right now. Why he said, “they’re under contract, they’ll both be here.” If he said otherwise, especially of the HC, then the players would mail it in knowing he wont be around.

But secretly, there’s a likelihood Mark has talked to Reggie about Dennis Allen’s status being up in the air. If he doesn’t see improvement, he WILL fire Dennis, or Reggie will know that it’s inevitable he has to himself, regardless of Allen’s contract status.

Another way to put it…Allen is under contract, don’t know the figure, but it’d be a couple million a year. Mark as businessman will understand that honoring or saving $6M by keeping Allen could cost millions more in lost ticket and merchandise sales, if the 2012 and 2013 team continues to get pounded. That it could be smarter to lose $6M in paying out Allen, hire a more galvanizing HC, like Gruden would be, and that would bring the masses back to the stadium etc.

  370. GG Says:

Realistically, considering Gruden’s ESPN contract and the politics there where they pushed Jaworski out to make Gruden ‘the man’ (long-term), i would guess that Gruden doesn’t make a HC return (to Oakland if he were to decide us) until 2014 IF Allen continues to fall on his face in 2013.

Plus, Gruden would probably be aware that if he were to return to coaching in 2013, angering ESPN, that ESPN would crucify his coaching in the media.

Then again, Gruden might still have that Raider-attitude in him where he is happy to return to coaching and flips the bird at the media.

  371. dr_robert Says:

“they’re under contract. they’ll be here.”

a ringing endorsement if i ever heard one.

a ringing endorsement if i ever heard one.

    —–

you can genuinely look at that two ways…a ringing endorsement, or, careful not to create a lame-duck HC.

  375. Plunketthead Says:

That’s sorta funny thinking bspn would be mad at chuckie but they would have to cover him and he will be big news in dallas or philly.

I would not built my hopes up that he will come here.

    despite what norcoboz says

  376. GG Says:

As i touched on earlier…Mark “could” make a run for Gruden simply because there’s no greater way to galvanize and excite Raider Nation than the possibility of Gruden as HC. Him being so loved still. The PSLs would sell out early, there’d be no bigger buzz than Gruden getting introduced at a press conference in February as new HC, him flashing his famous scowl, the fans queueing up for miles to attend training camp practices, and the national media buzz.

Everyone thinks Dallas and Philadelphia, but Mark is not afraid to do something that Al never could. Mark not afraid to bring back someone who took a share of the Raider spotlight away from Al. Mark not afraid to make a national media splash by hiring a big fish like Gruden.

  377. GG Says:

With Al now passed on, it’s now possible for Jon to return and not be squeezed by Al for being too high profile. That whole thing of “this town aint big enough for the both of us” thing.

  378. GG Says:

Here’s some wild GG predictions then…

Raiders to lose yet again in a soulless or dispirited way vs the Bengals. And Palmer’s arm continues to wane. You guys will see it more apparently now, none of you bar me have talked about that all this week after seeing the saints game. But you will hear/read more mention of it by beat writers, the waning arm.

You wont hear much out of Mark/Reggie the rest of the season.

Gruden wont commit to anything anyway till the season is over. ESPN having to secretly find someone to replace Gruden as the flagship of MNF. Maybe a media leak in the next month about how someone got approached by ESPN, thus creating wildfire of media speculation that Gruden is indeed returning and him denying it.

With us eliminated from playoffs, Reggie pushes Allen to play the young’uns the rest of the way. So we finally get to see Pryor in full.

Then either during Super Bowl week, or after, Davis will hold a press conference and announce the firing of Allen and hiring of Gruden.

Mark will commit to this probably after he sees for sure what happens the next two games. Two more dispirited losses and then he’ll commit to this plan to get Gruden.

^^^ There’s your wild GG prediction. Bookmark it.

  379. GG Says:

    Repost with more added on…

With Al now passed on, it’s now possible for Jon to return and not be squeezed by Al for being too high profile. That whole thing of “this town aint big enough for the both of us” thing would be gone, so Jon would feel able and willing to return to his favorite place and be embraced again.

  380. GG Says:

Also, Reggie is a WCO guy, and Gruden is far more accomplished in the WCO than Allen. So the system can continue without having to take another two steps back with the players.

  382. Albert Bigelow Paine Says:

Palmer is 1-8 as a Raider when he throws for 300 yards or more. That is clear evidence that losing is not his fault. He throws for 300 yards because a) they can’t run the ball, and b)the defense blows and they are trying to play catch up.

  383. GG Says:

A marquee LT ranked in the top 5 overall drafted with a high first rounder. Move Veldheer to RT. Draft the best Center with a second we get from trading McFadden (say). Then draft DB and LB. Then find an under the radar NT and Guards in the latter rounds.

Or, if we miss out on that marquee LT…

Draft the top-rated NT in the first. Draft best Center with the second (mcfadden trade). Then draft DB and LB. Then fill out remaining latter round picks with a RT and Guards. Veldheer to stay LT in this path.

That’s what needs to be done, imo.

But thats gonna take some expensive wine and a fine meal first, and maybe a little good old fashioned back seat of the car pole fish in.

Uh Willie Shaw? He ain’t here… Thrust her up in the air & hold her like Johnny Castle did to Baby. They melt when you do that fine sir.

As I have said before, the great Raider teams were ALWAYS BUILT THAT WAY.

Sure you can get a miss like Gallery or a John Clay (Do even remeber him?)

The higher probability is you get a Mosebar, Lawrence Upshaw, Schuh,Robbins, McGlockton, Russell, Steve Wisnieski, Bruce Wilerson, Mo Collins, Pickel, Conners etc etc.

Do you even know who these guys are????

Do you really think Plunkett found himself with Oakland or do you think the Oline giving him five seconds to throw might have helped?

Your team is defined on the line of scrimmage and we have not invested enough 1 and 2nd rounders in these areas.

Further, the picks that we have made for the last ten years with our high picks have been disastrous.

Get the skill guys in the later rounds but always build your lines.

I understand that you can find an ALL PRO Lineman in round three or later (Art SHell). THE PERCENTAGES ARE BETTER IN THE FIRST TWO ROUNDS.

After you build your line foundation then you can use high picks on skill guys.

Our Line play is AWFUL. We rank at or last in league in rush defense every year and we can not get sack WHILE RUSHING FOUR AGAINST ANYONE.

Your comments about Super Bowls and the Steelers further supports your limited understanding of the point I am trying to make.(If you did not notice they have won two SuperBowls and been in a third in the last seven years).
What is the Steelers winning percentage OVER THE LAST SEVEN YEARS? That is the key metric. They are a succesful, winning franchise that consistently makes the playoffs. Like the Raiders used to be.

MY POINT IS THEY KNOW THAT LINE PLAY IS PARAMOUNT TO SUCCESS. THEY MAKE THAT THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY.

That is the point I am trying to make. The good teams in the NFL put a premium on good line play and they invest high picks to do it.

We have largely ignored our lines for the last ten years and used retreads like Turdell Sands, Gerard Warren and Warren Sapp to play for us.

The strategy did not work.Seymour and Kelly are embarrassing.

You build the lines through the draft now. We can not afford any misses which is why we need high picks to improve our chances.

    This should brighten your day:

Paul Tagliabue will save the Raiders. Tagliabue will make a ruling soon on Gregg Williams to probably reinstate him in February after the Super Bowl.

He will then be re-united with his former understudy DA in Oakland. I do believe that Williams’ contract with Fisher and the Rams was voided due to the suspension plus Fisher has moved on.

Tarver will get Canned and DA will bring in Williams which will give us a killer (no bounty pun intended) defense. It will happen.

Now what we do with Knapp is anyone’s guess. Personally I don’t want him back but I believe he will be given another year with the addition of a whole new slate of O-Linemen.

    You just don’t get it.
1- we agree that we should invest high picks in our DL, so I’m not sure why you keep bringing it up.
2- we disagree on investing high picks in our OL. You are ignoring the fact that the Steelers and Giants won 4 SBs in the last 7 years without investing high picks in their OL.
The Colts won one without investing high picks in their OL. I’m not saying we should ignore our OL, but I don’t think we should invest high picks (1st and 2nd except for OT) especially now since we run the ZBS.

  448. Raider O Says:

    Charlie,

Our team lacks talent and impact players. We need DE, DT/ NT, CB, LB, and S. We also need to upgrade our offense especially our OL.

This was my first negative reaction to the new regime….this was the first warning signal that we were in for a long season or a rebuild.

Thee new regime should have immediately realized that the strength on this team was the O-Line and the running game….find a way to keep that in tact and build around that.

That led to letting Satele go and thinking that Wiz could easily replace him at center and the line would be the same.

Then they brought in Bergstrom and paid him a ton of cash to be the stinker of the year thus far! This guy was “SUPPOSED” to be good!

Then the last thing that happened surprised us all was that Barnes was a decent RT with him gone we are now seeing that.

All of those things combined dismantled our strength over the last few years (running game) and what brought us to 8-8…. bringing us to where we are today which is 3-7.

RM and DA I hope you learned something from this because you are upsetting some long time fans with this regression.

    Happy Thanksgiving as well.

My concern is that we have tried for the last ten years to build this team with free gaents and later round picks on the lines. We have used high draft picks largely on prolific skill guys and DB’s.

Mr Davis could not acknowledge his draft misses so he kept changing schemes and coaches. Disastrous to say the least.

Here we are with ten straight years of missing the playoffs.

What I am saying is that football is a game of time and space.
    Olines create it.
    Dlines destroy it.

EVERYTHING ELSE IS BASED OFF THAT PRINCIPLE.
YOU ARE RIGHT. IT IS NOT COMPLICATED.

Without superior line play it is impossible to effectively evaluate the rest of your team.

I would love to think we could rebuild our lines quickly but the law of averages and development say it will take at least two more years.

If we can rebuild our lines with 7th round picks. Great.

The law of averages says we will need to invest most of our high draft picks on in the box talent before we do much else.
We are too far gone in that area to even compete.

This last game Rolando shocked me how effective he was now if that is who he is. To discard this kid based on his past would be a huge mistake. Kind of like your support for Al Davis. His record as a GM over the last 25 years speaks for itself.

  517. Priesttj12 Says:

we had a poster in here last night who wants to get rid of every draft pick Mr Davis made on this team. No matter how good that player is or isn’t. And that is just flat out emotional reaction to someone unpopular on this board. Now what does that really amount to……total chaos no thought envolved at all.

That easy to do is to mindlessly go with the crowd. There are some dman good players MR Davis put on this team whether you hate or love him that is fact. But people are so caught up in hwo drafted the guy rather than whether he can play or not………talk about ‘matter over mind’ . That is for women and their makeup doesn’t apply here.

Was it Dennis Allen’s fault the ball went RIGHT THROUGH Myers paws in the end zone to a defender? That obviously was the right play call. Was it Allen’s fault that Mitchell just in explicitly let his assignment run past him to the endzone with 45 seconds to go in the half? Was it Allens fault that his kickoff unit cannot stay in their lanes and tackle to start the second half, and then let the Saint RB go 27 yards UNTOUCHED to basically ice the game?

Holland has done a solid job. You do question Tarver tho. Why is he blitzing guys from 15 yards in the defensive backfield? They have NO HOPE of getting to the Q who just waits, dumps it over them, and now you have an 11 on 9, or in other words an easy big play. And then Tarver does it again. Absolutely mind boggling…..

  557. Charlie Says:

The problem is our drafts for the last ten years and what our focus has been. We have tried enough different schemes and coaches to realize that we do not have the talent especially on the line of scrimmage.
Perhaps I have been going about explaining the importance of winning along the line of scrimmage the wrong way. Let me try this.
9 of your starting 22 (41%) plays exclusively in the box.
OLines create time and space. Dlines destroy time and space.
THAT IS WHAT THE GAME IS ABOUT. The rest of the pieces fill in the gaps.
A runner does not have the space and he looks like Dmac in Oakland not Arkansas.
A linebacker fighting off Olineman looks like McClain in Oakland not Alabama.
Do you really think you are going to be a consistently, strong, winning franchise building your lines with low round draft picks or free agents?

Taken to another extreme, do you think you will be able to beat your competition when they consistently use high picks to build this part of their team?

These are typically 270-320 pound athletes that need to have the agility and quickness of college level skill players. Do you really think you are likely to find many of them in the fifth and sixth round or packing out at Wal Mart?
    Really?
HINT: You better spend enough high round picks in the draft to build your lines or you will have a team that very closely resembles the 2012 Oakland Raiders.

    That’s the ticket.

It’s a good thing TP has been inactive every single week and hasn’t played a single down.

That way, if Palmer goes down we can continue our SB march with Lice.

Nice to know this team has direction.

We’re on our way to the playoffs AND developing our possible future players.

    Sweet.

Happy holidays to you all,..now that Big John canned Alex Smith I think the Raiders should offer up a draft pick for him,..hes 2-0 against the Raiders and is VERY underrated,…he would be the perfect fit in Oakland,..Hell he already is married to a Raiderette,…lets do this Reg you big dummy,..oh and by the way Reg, dont eat the whole F`n turkey again this year.

Do yourselves a favor and watch some tape of Pryor throwing the ball at Ohio St. You can youtube it. Then come back and talk about comparing him to Kaepernick, Newton, Griffith and Freeman.

I’d say he’s a better threat on the run than all those guys including Newton. He runs like a gazelle with his long stride and nifty moves but he throws a wobbly, inaccurate ball from what i’ve seen.

    I don’t say this cuz I don’t like him.
    ===========================================
I happen to think you’re right about TP.

I haven’t seen evidence that he throws well enough to be a very successful NFL QB.

In fact, the evidence indicates just the opposite, as you point out, DJ.

Still, there’s only one way to find out for sure.

You put some plays and packages in for TP and ease him in.

You try to prep him and have him ready if Palmer goes down.

You do NOT have him inactive every week and have Matt Lice as the next man up, in a season that clearly is going nowhere.

You take a look. You try to develop.

For crying out loud, you’ve got absolutely nothing to lose.

    Complete incompetence and UDDER FAILURE.

    Across the board.

  596. DJ Johnny Says:

I’ll bet u Mark is thinking the same thing Raiderman. Dad picked up TP in the 3rd round and i’m sure he’d like to see what he can do.

It’s tempting to have hope for TP when u see these other young, athletic guys like Kapernick do what he’s doing and you start to think “Hmmmm, maybe we have one of those too”.

  597. DJ Johnny Says:

Honestly, if we are 3-9 seeing Pryor play might be the only reason we even wanna watch any more games.

When is this crap ever going to stop?

I read the same crap about Cam and Kaepernick B4 they were drafted…..yet Matt Leinart/Alex Smith is allowed to look like crap passing the football. Terrelle Pryor is twice the passer Alex Smith is and 10x’s the competitor. I said 2 weeks ago that Kaepernick was in thr process of stealing Smith’s job and everyoe in here laughed. None of you will admit that now.

The only difference between Kaepernick and Pryor is Pryor is faster and may be even more accurate. Kappy’s delivery is elongated and slow and he has a hard time taking somegthing off his passes he zips everything. Pryor throws with a lot more touch on short passes. But if I had a chance between the two I’d Pryor he just is all-around a better player.

I told every Niner fan I know that Smith time as a starter was in peril the moment they drafted Kapernick everybody said he’s just a runner. Smith is booboo always has been yet there are Niner fans who would rather have him because he looks the part.

That is the same stupidity taking place now in Oakland matt Leinart looks the part but in actuality he can’t carry Pryor’s jock. Unfortunately the OC likes Leinart.

I’m watching a rookie outplay a seasoned vet RGIII is dominating Dallas yes the same RGIII everyone in here said wouldn’t make it at this level. You know what comes to mind everytime I read this crap. I’m not even sure it’s worth saying……….but it is unmistakable.

I’m telling you all now Palmer will have a very hard time keeping Pryor on the bench come next fall. Just you watch…..all he needs is another offseason and preseason just like I told Greg Knapp. Who quite frankly agreed somewhat reluctantly.

  599. GreatWhiteRaider Says:

Another part of the Draft is the DEVELOPMENT of these players. IMO, if anyone actually reaches their potential under these circumstances of the last while it’s because of themselves/sheer will/natural talent.

Imagine you were drafted in “Lance’s” first year? Gee, that wasn’t turbulent at all. Then Cable for almost 2 full seasons, then Hue for a season, endless coordinators, schemes, the Owner is a de facto DC, now he’s dead. Before he died, if you didn’t like your coach or how you were being treated, just go cry to him. What a gong show.

I would find it extremely entertaining and laughable if it were anyone but the Raiders. (*As an aside, John Herreira wanting to throw down with Tim Kawakami at that Presser a few years ago has to be one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen!)

But just to illustrate a point. I’m not defending him or saying the Raiders ruined him at all. I think he was lazy with a false sense of entitlement. But if the Raiders had a strong organization with quality people, maybe JaMarcus would have been handled differently and wouldn’t have ended up being such a disgrace?

Maybe the same thing to a lesser degree has happened to McClain? Don’t know if it can be fixed with him being a Raider or if it’s best he move on?

I love reading all the other bloggers and the debate between if it’s coaching and/or personnel that is lacking? I think it’s really hard to pin it down because the turnover is so high for both.

I really believe that some consistency will bring stability and the REAL culprits can start to be identified and let go.

The hard part is at this point is having faith in the people chosen when there aren’t instant results/or signs of progress. Outside of Chucky’s reign, it’s coming up on 20 years of wandering aimlessly and we’ve all had enough of it. What’s even more demoralizing is that with the way this season has gone, it looks like it’ll get worse before it gets better…..again.

    Griffin can play football.

This pathetic coaching staff are ill-suited to help develop TP. They are unequipped to develop or properly utilize the talented players they have. The guys running the raiders are not coaches, or talented former players who can teach. Instead they are a group of friends from the useless good ole boy network.

TP gets zero playing time, exposer and probably super limited practice rep, while proven loser/bust Matt Lienart, gets the reps and exposure

As for McKenzie, I’m really beginning to believe he too is a moron. Why did/does he release NFL quality players when he has no suitable replacements. I understand releasing a guy when there is someone better available. However releasing Al davis guys to bring in your own guys (rejects) is ridiculous. Barksdale released so the team gets stuck with Willie Smith (the leagues worse lineman). Cut Curry, who’s the difference maker taking his place ?

if tim tebow got a shot,

there is no justification for not giving pryor his shot
    =============================================

Yeah, but those are completely different circumstances.

    ==============

that is beside the point that i am making.

your comment that he ‘wasnt ready” to be an nfl qb because of mechanics and so on should be thrown out.

tebow had more questions that anyone i can remember yet he is on the feild leading a playoff run last year.

if tebow can have a chance pryor should too. the questions around pryor are nearly as drastic

    >> Damn you favor black Qbs with a vengeance don’t you? if the Qb is black he has to play right? best Qb gets to play and that’s not pryor.

Football is an emotional game. This team has no personality and emotion because Dennis Allen is dry as burnt toast. You got a geek that looks like Pee Wee Herman trying to coach the Raiders!! Come on man!! Both of his coordinators has no personality or emotion just like him. At least former Raider coaches like Jon Gruden,Hue Jackson and Tom Cable had some freaking fire.
