Two added to injury report, one removed

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, November 22nd, 2012 at 2:29 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders removed wide receiver Denarius Moore (hamstring) from the injury report Thanksgiving Day. That positive news was offset by running back Taiwan Jones (ankle) and defensive end Jack Crawford (toe) being added to the injury report.
Perhaps of more import, running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson and defensive tackle Richard Seymour didn’t practice once again.
If none of those three practices Friday, it’s very unlikely that any of them will play Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, especially considering they haven’t played the past two games or practiced for almost three weeks.
The Raiders have an abbreviated practice Friday and then head to the airport for the flight to Cincinnait.

– Twenty seven players that were on the Raiders roster for the final regular-season game last season no longer are on the 53-man roster.
Wide receiver Jacoby Ford still is with the Raiders, though he is on season-ending injured reserve and doesn’t count on the 53-man roster.
Thirteen of those 27 players no longer are in the NFL. Thirteen are playing for other teams. Ford is the 27th.
Waiving veteran outside linebacker Aaron Curry was the latest purging of players from the roster that coach Dennis Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie inherited.

– A blown coverage by outside linebacker Miles Burris against the Saints that resulted in a touchdown by Saints tight end Jimmy Graham can be chalked up to a rookie mistake, coach Dennis Allen said.
That wasn’t Burris’ lone issue against the Saints as he learns on the job — Burris has started all 10 games this season.
Burris allowed eight receptions for 63 yards and one touchdown on the eight times he was targeted by Saints quarterback Drew Brees last Sunday, according to Pro Football Focus. Burris also missed two tackles.

– Allen isn’t making too much of the Raiders playing a game against a Bengals team that features his predecessor, Hue Jackson.
In fact, he hasn’t even mentioned anything to his players about the subject.
“We haven’t addressed it,” Allen said. “We’re playing the Cincinnati Bengals and we’ve got to worry about doing the things that we have to do to have success. We can’t worry about any of those outside distractions. And really, it’s not a major factor in the game. It’s going to be our players going out and our players executing against their team.”

– Allen has no issue with the schemes used by first-year defensive coordinator Jason Tarver. It’s on the players to do their part on a more consistent basis.
“It’s been the same the whole year,” Allen said, as far as his level of involvement in the defense. “We haven’t changed anything as far as how we call the games. I’ve been pleased with the play-calling, and we’ve just got to do a better job overall of getting the right execution.”

– 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith recorded 5 1/2 sacks against the Chicago Bears on Monday night. That total is half what the Raiders notched as a team their first 10 games.
For that paltry total to change much, Allen said, the Raiders need the defensive linemen tp play in concert, first and foremost.
“I don’t think we have the great speed rusher coming off the edge, like a lot of people do,” Allen said. “Our guys can rush the passer, and we’ve just got to work together and understand how to work together as a four-man rush.”
Better coverage by linebackers and defensive backs also can augment the pass rush.
“It’s a combination of pass rush and pass coverage,” Allen said. “We’ve got to do a better job of winning our one-on-ones, whether that be in coverage or whether that be in the rush, and those things work together. It really comes down to individual battles and we’ve got to win more individual battles.”

Do yourselves a favor and watch some tape of Pryor throwing the ball at Ohio St. You can youtube it. Then come back and talk about comparing him to Kaepernick, Newton, Griffith and Freeman.

I’d say he’s a better threat on the run than all those guys including Newton. He runs like a gazelle with his long stride and nifty moves but he throws a wobbly, inaccurate ball from what i’ve seen.

    I don’t say this cuz I don’t like him.
    ===========================================
I happen to think you’re right about TP.

I haven’t seen evidence that he throws well enough to be a very successful NFL QB.

In fact, the evidence indicates just the opposite, as you point out, DJ.

Still, there’s only one way to find out for sure.

You put some plays and packages in for TP and ease him in.

You try to prep him and have him ready if Palmer goes down.

You do NOT have him inactive every week and have Matt Lice as the next man up, in a season that clearly is going nowhere.

You take a look. You try to develop.

For crying out loud, you’ve got absolutely nothing to lose.

    Complete incompetence and UDDER FAILURE.

    Across the board.

I’ll bet u Mark is thinking the same thing Raiderman. Dad picked up TP in the 3rd round and i’m sure he’d like to see what he can do.

It’s tempting to have hope for TP when u see these other young, athletic guys like Kapernick do what he’s doing and you start to think “Hmmmm, maybe we have one of those too”.
    ===========================================

While it is fun and romantic to think “wow let’s just put in Terrell Pryor and march to the playoffs” the reality is QB has not been a problem for us. Running back has been. We are the WORST running team in the league, which puts huge amounts of pressure on the QB position. Until that is fixed, why would you want to put a Q out there with no experience? That would be crazy especially considering how well your starting Q is playing.

  5. Priesttj12 Says:

When is this crap ever going to stop?

I read the same crap about Cam and Kaepernick B4 they were drafted…..yet Matt Leinart/Alex Smith is allowed to look like crap passing the football. Terrelle Pryor is twice the passer Alex Smith is and 10x’s the competitor. I said 2 weeks ago that Kaepernick was in thr process of stealing Smith’s job and everyoe in here laughed. None of you will admit that now.

The only difference between Kaepernick and Pryor is Pryor is faster and may be even more accurate. Kappy’s delivery is elongated and slow and he has a hard time taking somegthing off his passes he zips everything. Pryor throws with a lot more touch on short passes. But if I had a chance between the two I’d Pryor he just is all-around a better player.

I told every Niner fan I know that Smith time as a starter was in peril the moment they drafted Kapernick everybody said he’s just a runner. Smith is booboo always has been yet there are Niner fans who would rather have him because he looks the part.

That is the same stupidity taking place now in Oakland matt Leinart looks the part but in actuality he can’t carry Pryor’s jock. Unfortunately the OC likes Leinart.

I’m watching a rookie outplay a seasoned vet RGIII is dominating Dallas yes the same RGIII everyone in here said wouldn’t make it at this level. You know what comes to mind everytime I read this crap. I’m not even sure it’s worth saying……….but it is unmistakable.

I’m telling you all now Palmer will have a very hard time keeping Pryor on the bench come next fall. Just you watch…..all he needs is another offseason and preseason just like I told Greg Knapp. Who quite frankly agreed somewhat reluctantly.

Good for Allen. Cincy has a very good defensive line which matches up well against our suspect Oline. With no running game, that does not bode well.

    ===============================================
    Yes, it does.

Also comes down to making the most out of the roster and not getting outcoached every freaking week.

That appears to be an individual battle we’re losing every week, as evidenced by 3rd quarter results.

Takes more than just ‘coach speak’ and cliches, titty boy.

    UDDER FAILURE.

lol…this guy is such a clown …the defense has sucked all year and they havent changed anything? Not only is DA dumb he is also incompetent…”i can see its not working but we will keep on doing it…” what a freakin idiot.

  9. morilla Says:

Kap is known as a guy who is a great passer. Has been one since his college days. Probably also has one of the strongest arms out of any young QB. He’ll break your hand.

Now TP? A solid, consistant passer? No. He can run though.

I only wish the Niners didn’t jump up and get Kap. He’s the real deal. TP, not so much.

    =========================================

RGIII is an incredibly ACCURATE passer. He was incredibly accurate coming out of college. That’s why he went #2 overall behind ANOTHER incredibly accurate passer. Carson Palmer has led the NFL in completion percentage, was a Heisman winner and also incredibly accurate coming out of college. Pryor has never been known for his accuracy. In fact 32 teams had a shot at drafting him, and passed on him. Twice. Don’t get too excited.

  11. BabySlash Says:

Arian Foster is a perfect fit for the ZBS. He is patient and glides, then can quickly explode and escape. It is amazing that Knapp could not see that this is the antithesis of DMac! Maybe they knew in advance that we don’t have the rights players for this scheme (our QB is not mobile, we had no established TE’s and no real slot guy) We are not built for this strict “system” offense.

Seems like they were prepared to lose this year.

  12. Priesttj12 Says:

RGIII is ripping Dallas a new one, the same RGIII most of you said couldn’t make it at this level.

Sooner or later which ever suits you. Y’all are going to have to come to grips with this fact. These kids can play at this level. They’re NOT JUST ATHLETES trying to play QB they are QB’s who just happen to be great athletes…………period

  13. morilla Says:

Priest, there is a very good chance TP won’t even be a Raider next year. Get used to it.

  14. BabySlash Says:

The Lions are taking all the penalties from us this year. We are not a threat anymore and are not dirty.

Great game in Detroit. Wild to see players coming through in clutch situations and actually executing.

  15. Priesttj12 Says:

Alex Smith was never known for his accuracy either. Neither was Kaepernick who was called just a runner……..what would you call him now?

    ======================================

Now all of a sudden with Kapernick playing well in one game, here comes the “running Q, running Q, running Q” flavor of the month. Yes, RGIII is ripping Dall-ass to pieces, but it is not his running. He is standing there and delivering. THAT, is what you have to do to be successful in this league. Palmer can do that. Now that teams will start to prepare for Kaepernick, can he do that? Pryor I don’t think can do that.

    ====================================

Smith was certainly always thought of as an accurate passer. And he has been an accurate passer at this level. The knock on Smith was he played only in a spread offense, and some scouts did not think he could play in a pro style offense.

  19. BabySlash Says:

Jim Schwartz failed with that red flag and trying to kick a 47 yard FG on THIRd Down !

  20. Priesttj12 Says:

When I watch RGIII throw the football Aaron Rodgers comes to mind I said that B4 he was a junior in college. Very few QB’s have that kids accuracy including Andrew Luck. I have never said Pryor was super accurate what I am saying is he is way more accurate than people think he is.He is as accurate as many starting QB’s in this league definitely more accurate than Leinart will EVER be.

  21. BabySlash Says:

    Alex Smith is ø doomed

  22. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

    Doubt it.

Just too stupid and blind to see that what they were attempting to implement wouldn’t work.

If these clowns are back next year, we should be prepared for more of the same.

We’re obviously in a tough spot personnel wise.

But with Udder Failure in charge we’ve got no chance anyway.

  23. morilla Says:

Since Al lost out on Kap, he grasped at straws and took the knock off version. Terrelle Pryor.

    ********************************
Son you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. Smith was drafted for his smarts and athleticism and he ahd a decent arm. I scouted that kid and rated behind Rodgers and Jason Campbell. The Niners just drafted the wrong guy and have been trying undraft him ever since he’s been there.

  25. Priesttj12 Says:

Smith was doomed the moment they rolled his sorry ass out there. he’s had every excuse known to man he has gotten 3 HC’s fired until he got a smart enough coach who would allow him to get him FIRED and that coqach has been trying to replace his sorry ass since he got there……….period

  26. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

    ========================================

Smith was 21-1 as a starter, always completed over 65% of his passes, and had over 5 times as many TD’s than he had picks. He was 4th in Heisman voting. Sounds pretty accurate to me. Go sit down, son.

  29. jackasspuria Says:

    Execution, such a novel concept.

  31. Priesttj12 Says:

  32. Priesttj12 Says:

As long as Smith dinks and dunks he will always complete a lot of passes just don’t ask him to win a game with his arm.

  33. Priesttj12 Says:

it’s really fu#king easy. newton came in for claussen. rg3 came in for grossman. kaepernick is replacing a qb that the 49ers have always known was a bust. pryor is NOT replacing a guy on pace for almost 5k yards. get it thru ur head. ur brain is skipping on the same annoying groove and won’t move on.

well, u have just proven that u are indeed mistic. using the baseball example of looking at young prospects was his angle a few weeks ago. and it’s such a specific and ridiculous example, that it’s clearly the same guy.

the NFL is NOT baseball. they don’t do it. only when it’s clear that a guy isn’t in their future, do they do it. there is simply no way they will sit palmer. and they won’t give pryor a few series either. they won’t create any confusion or controversy regarding their best player.

and they need wins. the owner is unhappy. DA isn’t gonna take a look at the future for another coach. he needs wins NOW and palmer gives him the best chance for that.

find something else to talk about. or better yet, go be a 49ers fan. they have a new black qb u can root for.

After those comments by Allen, I’ve officially climbed the fence from the support side.
Not jumping over to fire DA side just yet though.
Staying on the fence but leaning hard.

Sounds almost as if he’s putting all the blame on the players.
    ……..
I think the entire organization is putting the blame on the players…

“Twenty seven players that were on the Raiders roster for the final regular-season game last season no longer are on the 53-man roster.
Wide receiver Jacoby Ford still is with the Raiders, though he is on season-ending injured reserve and doesn’t count on the 53-man roster.
Thirteen of those 27 players no longer are in the NFL. Thirteen are playing for other teams. Ford is the 27th.”

…and for good reason. The lack of talent on this team is staggering and it will take a few years to get the salary cap, depth, and talent necessary to win consistently.

sometimes you need to dumb it down with Raider fan. Lets say you guys are coaching a Pop Warner team and your QB is pretty good but your team isn’t. But some of the players are going to come back next year. Do you bench your QB, your best player, because some parent wants to see their sucky kid play quarterback?

In today’s day and age that actually DOES happen more.

Remember, we don’t want any kids not getting their chance to play.

But seriously, we know Leinart…we don’t know Pryor.

IF u are out of contention, why not have a look see at Pryor.

I’m curious to see what he could do.

Joe Montana wasn’t a “hot prospect”. plus he was in the draft where teams are competing against other teams for all the other players. Pryor went in the supplemental draft where it was just Pryor and the teams. If he was a “hot prospect” teams wouldn’t have passed on him again and again. You are not the sharpest knife in the drawer are you?

Stands to reason you’ll rarely see a very talented player drafted quite as high as they would in the primary draft.

That aside where he was drafted makes no difference it’s what he brings to you team son. Can he help us win games that is what they need to decide and that’s tough to do accurately unless he plays. Plus many teams shied away knowing he would be suspended. and with his baggage. The point is we have him and fans are excited about seeing him perform…….what is the issue with you?

  156. chuck Says:

For those two high-value picks, Palmer is 7-12 and owner Mark Davis was beside himself with his anger over this disastrous season. Palmer has had five interceptions returned for touchdowns during his brief run with the Raiders. Palmer can still throw for 300 yards on any given Sunday, but the trade didn’t move improve the Raiders’ playoff hopes.

Scrolling through the comments, the idea of cutting/trading DMac for peanuts and cutting/benching Palmer seem quite popular.

Forget the fact that we have the worst pass rush in the league. Forget that we have the worst defense in the league. Let’s focus on getting rid of our best offensive weapon and the first real QB we’ve had in a decade who is on pace for close to 5,000 yards and 30 TDs.

Let’s just hope that as pathetic as this coaching staff and leadership have been, they never listen to such silly suggestions.

  222. DJ Johnny Says:

You know who has thrown the most int’s returned for td’s in NFL history?

    Brett Favre.

Talk about a guy who has played on some teams that were loaded with talent.

I love Favre as a player. The guy was an ironman…never could take him out of a game no matter how many hits he took.

    A true gunslinger.

    Remember Jeff George?

    1997- 3,917 yd’s passing 29 td’s only 9 int’s. We were 4-12.

1999- With Minnesota he replaces Randall Cunningham who had led team to 2-4 start. George goes 8-2 the rest of the way throwing 23 td’s and 12 int’s. 2,800 passing yd’s. and a first round win over Tampa 27-10 then he lost in a shootout with Kurt Warner and the “greatest show on turf” 44-37 in the 2nd round.

How come George was able to go 8-2 and win a playoff game?

-Randy Moss (in his prime), and Cris Carter as his receivers as well as 1,000 yd. rusher Robert Smith (4.6 ypc.)

My point is, with a REAL TEAM behind him…a guy like George, who was unable to win games with anyone else, was able to when he had an actual team to play with.

You need a team. George had that brief chance to show what he could do if he actually had one.

We all know the talent Favre had his entire career to work with.

It’s just the way the media is when it comes to QB’s.

They get all the blame when u lose…no matter if you have what could turn out to be the worst defense in league history statistically, and they tend to get all of the credit if the team wins.

Truth is you need a TEAM behind you no matter how good a QB you are.

I don’t know ANY SB winning QB who did it all himself…NONE.

About our often injured DMAC, he should be considered in a trade. He’s been hurt in both blocking schemes, so I wouldn’t look back on his departure as a mistake. If we were to draft a back who is durable and a bruiser who could carry the load at the expense of DMAC getting less touches, so be it. DMAC should be featured as the best complimentary back, ever. Reggie Bush when he was in New Orelans…something like that.

  226. raidertalk Says:

Less and Less Excuses next year:

This year the excuse was no 1st/2nd rounder draft pic; no time to recruit a proper Offensive coordinator and no salary-cap room.

This off season we will have plenty of time to scoop up talent on the offensive coordinator position, so there should not be any excuses as to why the coaching is off.

We will at least a 1st rounder so there should be less of an excuse for talent drop-off; however draft picks do take time to develop

I’m not sure about the Salary-Cap next year, but hopefully it is more manageable so as to be less of an excuse for the lack of talent.

  227. 2romes Says:

I still see some of the regulars Reggie, Dennis Allen followers pining over them even though Hue Jackson has out performed them both. Must be love at first sight. Dennis Allen has yet to managed a kick off returner to get the ball past the twenty yard line on a consistent basis so how do you expect him to make gains on managing a team? Reggie and Dennis Allen do not get free passes here. If those that cannot see that Hue’s 8-8 is not far from 9-7 and the playoffs, those that argue personality over results, will have a difficult time comprehending this concept. If it disfavors the Raiders to handle a kick return and they routinely bring the ball short of the twenty yard line just down the ball and take the twenty yards.Mind you, this is a coaches decision.Good luck!

  231. The Mack Says:

Dmac is often injured because when he’s healthy they run him in the ground. They rely on him for everything and there’s no real time share. In that first game against SD they handed it off to him almost every play and if they weren’t handing it off to him they were throwing it to him. I believe he caught 13 passes that day on 18 targets? When you touch the ball that much your getting hit that much more and your body starts to wear down… he’s an exceptional athlete but he’s still human and not invincible ya know? In this league you can’t get by with a work horse back because players get bigger faster and stronger each year you have to have a time share or eventually your star back will get hurt. To trade Dmac for a 2nd or first would be silly because theres no guarantee that player will pan out. Dmac has proven when he’s healthy and has an competent OC around him he’s one of the top backs in this league, but that 1st or 2nd rounder may turn out to be jamarcus Russel or Mike Mitchell … point being you never trade a proven talent for a unproven one. And another, thing Dmac has never been soft he only goes out of bounds instead of fighting for the extra 2 yards because DA told him to to prevent getting hurt, saying those extra 2 yards aren’t worth it.

Having hue around would have been more helpful to Reggie as well because he knew who could play who couldn’t play, what positions they needed to improve most and which ones to leave alone. Hues knowledge would have given the guys at the top a head start on righting the ship because he knew what they needed Most already so I’m sure he’d of gotten all that he needed in the offseason and draft. I’m positive we’d of been more of a complete team if hue was around making us more competitive and prepared to take on better teams. It seems like we’re releasing players and scavenging the waiver wire every week which shows DA still is unsure about his personnel. Hue would of already had the right players in place by now. not getting a pass rusher.

    staying with mcclain.
    cornerback depth ridiculously bad.
    tarver’s playcalling/lack of inventiveness.

Yeah , no doubt he got DMAC and RUNNING game going with his scheme and stuff, but D isn’t like O , where you can scheme around one of your best player on that side, and it’s not any of our guys are great pass rushers that we’re under performing , where as everyone knows DMac is talented, you can’t really say the same for D players and say he could have brought some kinda D.co who could have used this or that guys pass rushing prowess to better advantage or used on of the ball hawking secondary players all over the field to create more turnovers, yeah ofcourse , maybe Palmer might not have thrown the Int in ATL game if Hue was Coach, and maybe HUE Could have had prepared a back up long snapper to go in for COndo in SD game, and yeah under HUE maybe Palmer wouldn’t have tried 61 P attempts , which led him to arm fatigue and Int in crucial situation , but it’s not like we really beat up on teams last year, we’re a few plays here and there by opposing team from going 5-11 last year, if Cutler doesn’t miss Chicago game , it’s possible we lose in week 12 , if Seymour doesn’t block KC FG that could have won the game for them , we’re couple of plays away from going winless in last 6 games

You know you’re one of my favorite posters in here and i always agree with you , but considering the kinda competition Burris played against and where he was drafted, it’s obvious Burris isn’t that great of a pass rusher, otherwise he would have been drafted pretty high, since pass rush is premium and teams are always looking for pass rushers through draft

well, he’s undersized for one. and he’s white. basically, when u watched him rush the passer in college, he looked like a LB rushing from the corner and just beating slower OT’s. so i was pretty sure he wasn’t going to be a bigtime passrusher too. however, it’s worth a look cuz he is quicker than OT’s and he does have a knack for getting to the qb. yes, it was san diego state, but that’s not a horrible conference, just not the pac-12.

  276. mcfadden20. Says:

I agree with people who are asking for DA’s head over his OC hiring, but i still don’t think any other OC would have had us going toe to toe against all these good teams, considering our worst pass rush other good QB’s would be going against…

basically, we’re 10 games in, we have zero pass rush, and u have a guy in the lineup who has played pretty well, and he has a history of getting to the qb. if u don’t wanna put him on the edge, how about some blitzes? i mean try something new, cuz we’ve seen what we have so far.

O and D is different, where in O you can beat ok D’s if you got really good Running game, and average passing , and beat all kinda D’s if you got good group of WR’s and good QB along with the Oline working together to give enough time for QB

D is different, you can have the good run D and very bad secondary and pass rush and you can win 50/50 games against average O’s, you really won’t beat Good passing O’s by just stopping the run , you would have to have very good secondary and very good pass rush, which we lack due to no pass rushers, it’s not like we have some Dmac on Dline that’s just being under utilized or something LOL

You judge hue as if he only coached with us last year, he coached with us the year before and we swept the division with Bruce gradkowski and Jason Campbell at Qb for Pete sakes. @doc Roberts, Dmac has toned it down because DA told him to so he doesn’t get hurt. I remember up where Dmac was saying how DA and Knapp informed him to run out of bounds instead of throwing his body out there for 2 extra yards, because they need him on the field more than they need 2 yards, as a matter of fact DA said it in one of his earlier press conferences near week 1. Ask cork about it next chat session.

  284. mcfadden20. Says:

All I’m saying is DA deserves another year, to correct some of the stuff like hiring a better OC and better SP team coach, he can’t be the only guy who have made a bad choice in hiring one of his coaches, I’m pretty sure most of the top guys made some kinda mistakes in their first year with teams , you can’t say Bill Walsh didn’t bring new coaches in his 2nd year, or B Belichick didn’t change things in 2nd year, as far as getting blown out, what else do you expect with this D? you can change all the schemes you want, but QB’s will find wide open guys if they got like 10 seconds in pocket

Division games are always 50/50 , we were due to sweep these teams plus save for SD our division wasn’t that great or anything , we only went 2-8 outside of division, which says a lot, and still it’s the same freaking problem, there wasn’t anything to carry over from 10 to 11 that told us we are going to make progress, all it proved was we were ok enough to beat weak teams , which proved true in 11, so far we haven’t faced schedule as favorable as those years

  287. mcfadden20. Says:

Not many wins came against good teams in 10 and 11, 2 of our 3 wins came against bad teams this year, nothing has changed, we still have horrible D since 2002

  288. mcfadden20. Says:

DmAC is always injured, so i don’t understand the love fest anymore, I wouldn’t be little bit worried if he’s not here next year, not durable enough to be paid all that money and to devise the whole scheme around

  291. The Mack Says:

Post 285 yea reece looked darn good last week, it was his best game as a raider thus far but compare that game to dmacs best game as a raider… and with the holes he had last week whose to say Dmac wouldn’t have done better? I saw the best game the line has had thus far last week. But yea I like reece, just believe Dmac has more upside and I wouldn’t crown him king after just 2 games.

  292. The Mack Says:

They need to get Dmac help, they try to use him as a work horse back and run him thin, he needs to be teamed up with a complimentary back. I agree with you on the idea we need more talent but I also believe we can be a lil better than what we are. I understand losing but its the way we lose that says we lack talent and “leadership”. I don’t think DA will be back next year nor do I think he deserves to. The raiders need a hard @$$ like gruden, parcells, cowher and so forth who will demand their respect and hold them accountable, and I don’t see that in DA which h is why I feel he needs to go. He doesn’t fit what we need here.

  293. mcfadden20. Says:

I know it looks ridiculous when you look at the outcomes , and say its the way been losing that’s upsetting you guys , but we have been losing like this for awhile against good teams, look at GB game, NE game last year, believe me it’s really not the coaching , it’s really the talent with this team, Gruden, Parcells ,Cowher all these guys don’t have track record working with rebuilding teams, hard to say they would succeed based on their success with teams which weren’t bad to begin their careers with ,if you think Gruden took over a bad raiders then look again, those Raiders weren’t really lacking in talent, before 98 we only had 2 seasons under 7 wins dating back to late 60s, Cowher took over pretty good Steelers team, last time I checked Bill Parcells was struggling with Cowboys in his last heading coaching job

  294. mcfadden20. Says:

Just think about it for a second we are hardly an average O and we have the weakest D in NFL ,how can you guys not expect to get blown out ?? Lmao

Twenty seven players that were on the Raiders roster for the final regular-season game last season no longer are on the 53-man roster.
Wide receiver Jacoby Ford still is with the Raiders, though he is on season-ending injured reserve and doesn’t count on the 53-man roster.
Thirteen of those 27 players no longer are in the NFL. Thirteen are playing for other teams. Ford is the 27th.

Just read every single comment the last two blog articles. Great work all in all the excellent debates. Especially this page. For instance, to the person demonstrating how if Hue stayed on we’d be better this year using the Huff at CB example.

Also, last year, with Wauffle as DL coach, we generated a lot of sacks and QB pressures/hits with the exact same DL. That’s another example of how it’s not the talent but the coaching. New DL coach, new DC, and they regress.

It’s very easy for Reggie and DA to blame the players as an excuse to protect their own image/cred, as an excuse to ride out of town all the Davis picks as tho that was the problem entirely.

It’s also a mistake of them to ride them out so quickly. You shouldn’t gut a roster this quickly. They think Mark Davis gave them a 10 year immunity, like they can just gut the roster, suck for another 3 years just so Reggie can play fantasy football bringing in entirely his ‘own’ players.

Al would’ve allowed Tarver to try his ‘exotic’ multi-looks and safety blitzes, but after seeing it get embarrassed so consistently he would’ve smacked Tarver around and worked on changes.

Reggie as GM, and Allen as HC, are still bashing their heads against the wall 12 weeks into the season running the same tired 15 yard deep safety blitzes and all the mass confusion going on among the DBs/LBs in zone coverage allowing a ton of big plays and 3rd and long conversions because the middle is so wide open.

Amen!! I’m tired of hearing excuses to not play TP because he’s not a good passer…lol How would ANYONE know that until he was in an acutal game… I know preseason is preseason, but if you watched TP in those games this year, you had to be impressed and excited.

I see alot of people shooting TP down from even getting a chance on the field citing ‘QB isnt our problem’ which is true. But if you think Matt Leinert will get you a win if (god forbids) Palmer goes down, you’re sadly mistaken! No, we have WAY more problems than QB right now. But at this point in the season, its time to evaluate your roster. It wouldnt be a bad idea to preserve Palmer for next season and see what TP can do… If he cant perform well, then maybe axe him… But to never give him a shot is as dumb as hiring Knapp for a second go round!!

Raiders prepare for reunion with former coach

    By JOSH DUBOW
    AP Sports Writer

    Published: Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012 – 2:27 pm
    Last Modified: Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012 – 1:15 pm

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Hue Jackson made a big impact in his two seasons with the Oakland Raiders.

He helped revive Darren McFadden’s career, turned Darrius Heyward-Bey from a bust to a capable NFL receiver and sparked a moribund offense that was one of the most inept in the league before he arrived.

Jackson helped bring credibility back to Oakland first as offensive coordinator in 2010 and then head coach last season. But when Reggie McKenzie was hired as general manager last January, he overhauled the organization starting by firing Jackson after an 8-8 season and bringing in Dennis Allen.

The Raiders (3-6) will see their former coach again Sunday when they visit Cincinnati (5-5) to face the Bengals, where Jackson is an assistant secondary and special teams coach.

“I thought he was a great head coach,” quarterback Carson Palmer said. “Obviously, it was time for a switch here with the new regime coming in, but I thought Hue was great and I think he will get another opportunity. There’s just guys you know, kind of like DA, you know he is going to be a head coach. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. Hue will be a head coach again because he is a great leader, he understands enough about the game to be a head coach but he’s also passionate. Guys follow him.”

Late owner Al Davis brought Jackson in to be offensive coordinator under coach Tom Cable for the 2010 season after Oakland finished second-to-last in scoring and yards per game the previous season.

The improvement under Jackson’s play-calling was immediate and the Raiders had developed into one of the NFL’s better offenses. In two seasons with Jackson running that side of the ball, Oakland ranked 10th in the league in scoring and first in rushing over that span.

“He’s a phenomenal play-caller,” Palmer said. “He does a great job of keeping defenses off-balance and surprising defenses with some new stuff.”

But the Raiders have fallen to 22nd in the league in scoring, averaging 3.2 fewer points per game, and are second-to-last in rushing with a drop of more than 62 yards per game from Jackson’s two years.

The biggest beneficiaries of Jackson’s offense were McFadden and Heyward-Bey. McFadden struggled his first two seasons after being picked fourth overall in 2008 as he was limited by injuries and a blocking system that didn’t suit his game.

One of the first things Jackson did when being hired by the Raiders was ask McFadden what were his favorite runs and using those power schemes more than the old system. After rushing for 856 yards with a 3.9 average in 15 games over his first two injury-filled seasons.

That all changed under Jackson’s leadership as McFadden had 1,771 yards rushing and a 5.3 average in 20 games in 2010-11.

“I felt like he helped me a whole lot, just building my confidence in the league and he gave me the opportunity to show folks I can go out there and run the ball the way I do,” McFadden said.

With the Raiders going back to more zone runs this season, McFadden has reverted back and is averaging just 3.3 yards per carry.

Heyward-Bey had just nine catches as a rookie the year before Jackson arrived as he struggled to hold onto balls. While never living up to his No. 7 draft status, Heyward-Bey finally emerged as a legitimate threat with 64 catches for 975 yards and four touchdowns last season.

“He just saw the work I put in,” Heyward-Bey said. “He believed in me. He was the type of coach that he will call plays because he wanted to see if you were going to make a play. He did that the years he was here.”

But despite his success on offense, Jackson was fired as head coach by McKenzie last January when Oakland fell one game short of the playoffs.

He ended up back in Cincinnati, where he had spent three years as an assistant previously, getting a taste of defense and special teams after being exclusively an offensive coach for most of his career.

“He’s a great technician as a coach and he sees the details and he sees the big picture. That’s why he’s so special as a coach. He can see both the detail work you have to have to be great but he can also see the entire big picture,” Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said. “It’s been great. I’ve missed him since he’s been gone and it’s great to have him back here.”

The roster in Oakland is quite different from the one Jackson last coached in the season finale against San Diego. Of the 53 players on the team for that game, more than half (27) are no longer active with the Raiders and the system has changed on both sides of the ball.

“I maybe can shed some light on a thing or two here or there, but at the end of the day it’s going to be two really good football teams out there playing and they’re going to do everything they can to win and we’re going to do everything we can to win,” Jackson said.

Raiders have fallen so much, so quickly

    By MONTE POOLE
    The Oakland Tribune

    Published: Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012 – 12:00 am
    Last Modified: Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012 – 1:12 pm

It was exactly a year ago that the Raiders spent Thanksgiving Day in the midst of a three-game win streak throughout which they sat atop the AFC West.

Quarterback Carson Palmer, who had been plucked off the inactive list in October, was finding his timing and rounding into shape.

The field leader, Hue Jackson, was in the Coach of the Year conversation, even though a certain coach across the Bay was the front-runner.

And one year later, it’s all gone.

Oakland has fallen so far, so fast, nobody is better off. Not the Raiders, not Palmer, certainly not Jackson. Nobody has the look of a winner.

Jackson, who was fired by new general manager Reggie McKenzie, is an assistant in Cincinnati. Palmer is straining under the weight of turnovers committed while trying to carry the burden of an abysmal offense. And an Oakland team that needed an epic collapse to finish 2011 in a three-way tie for first place in the division – missing the playoffs by one play – is one of the five worst in the NFL.

Last November seems so long ago that even the memories are fuzzy. Most of the chatter about the 2012 Raiders implies the roster is rudderless and threadbare, failing mostly because the team lacks talent and depth. There are kernels of truth to that.

Following the evidence leads to a question: How did the ‘11 Raiders, with mostly the same starting cast, manage to reach first place in the division at this time last year?

With the Raiders making a trip to Cincinnati this weekend, I made several attempts to obtain answers from Jackson. Maybe he would be willing to explain what was going right last November, if not what he thinks might be wrong this season. Maybe he could shed some light, perhaps offer pointers to Dennis Allen, his replacement in Oakland.

After several conversations and text-messages, Jackson concluded it would not be in his best interest to share his opinions about the Raiders – or about his chances at the Cal coaching job. Though it is clear that being dismissed by the Raiders still stings, Jackson was reluctant to address the team’s myriad issues.

“I think I will pass on making a comment at this point,” Jackson said via text message. “I think it’s best for me to say as little as possible.”

Jackson did, however, point out that the current state of the Raiders helps any case he might wish to state.

They’ve lost seven of 10 this season and were not really competitive in the last three losses, which have come in succession. McKenzie, whose first major move was firing Jackson, is in the early stages of a comprehensive rebuilding of the organization. Allen, hired from Denver, is 10 games into the task of proving he’s the man to fix the franchise.

But, really, how much rebuilding and fixing should be necessary for a team that was so close to the 2011 playoffs?

It figured the Raiders might be better equipped to improve this season than last.

Running back Darren McFadden had developed into a star, though plagued by injury. Darrius Heyward-Bey, a first-round vanity project of late former owner Al Davis, emerged from Bustville to become a functional wide receiver. Fellow wideout Denarius Moore flashed tremendous promise.

Unlike 2011, this team would have a full offseason program and training camp, with Palmer participating throughout.

All the 2011 Raiders needed to reach the playoffs was an ordinary defense – only Buffalo in the AFC allowed more points – and surely in 2012 they could be at least ordinary under former defensive coordinator Allen.

But Oakland’s defense has been inconsistent against the run and worse against the pass. The improvement that seemed apparent in mid-October has dissolved into the same familiar rut of ineptitude seen last season and so many seasons before.

Two years after Jackson was installed as offensive coordinator and solved Oakland’s long-standing problem scoring points, that problem is back with a vengeance. The unit is a mess. Palmer is lost, so is Moore. McFadden was ineffective before sustaining an injury two weeks ago. DHB once again looks like a backup.

No doubt Jackson, whose coaching career was upended, believes the Raiders could have avoided these relapses had he returned and that everyone could have been satisfied.

The perception of Jackson as audacious and swaggering is understandably reinforced by his unwavering self-confidence. Is it possible he had reason to feel good about what he was doing, and where the Raiders might be headed?

They were winning behind a quarterback, Jason Campbell, few believed in before he sustained an injury, winning despite a defense coached by Chuck Bresnahan, with strict oversight from Al Davis before he died.

Jackson did acknowledge the deepest cut was not having the opportunity to assemble a defensive staff. He insists his candid end-of-season comments about making sweeping changes were spoken not as a megalomaniac GM but as a coach finally in position to identify and hire assistants of his choosing.

We know this: In the 17 years since returning to Oakland the Raiders have employed 10 head coaches, two of which made impact that was immediate and positive. Jon Gruden was traded after four seasons, none of which resulted in a losing record. Jackson was fired after one 8-8 season.

Gruden never threw stones, and Jackson is unwilling to launch his own.

But once again, the evidence reveals a franchise scrambling for answers and sinking in the wake of change.

  340. GG Says:

Btw, in Mark Davis post-game interview he made mention how he made a mistake. Ie, firing Hue.

  341. GG Says:

Hue “opened the can” on Reece, says Palmer better than ever

Former Raiders coach Hue Jackson, now an assistant defensive backs and assistant special teams coach with the Bengals, met with the Cincinnati media today. Here are some things he touched on, a few days before facing his old team from a year ago:

    ^ On Carson Palmer:

“He’s playing great. I think they have a really good player. I said that when he came to Oakland, and I still feel that way now. Carson’s a really good football player. There’s not a throw he can’t make.”

^ Giving the Bengals inside stuff on the Raiders:

“I am, but it’s not about that. We have great coordinators here. I maybe can shed some light on a thing or two here or there, but at the end of the day it’s going to be two really good football teams out there playing and they’re going to do everything they can to win and we’re going to do everything we can to win. It comes down to who wants it the most and blocking and tackling and catching and running and all those things you do during football games.”

^ The Raiders being a pass-first team now:

“Honestly I don’t want to comment because I’m not there. I don’t know exactly what’s going on. I know they have some very good players, I know the quarterback is playing extremely well. They’re rallying around him. Carson’s there to throw the ball because he knows how to throw the ball, and they have some weapons there. I’m not surprised. That’s a really good football team. They have some talent there and they’re throwing it all over the yard.”

    ^ On fullback Marcel Reece:

“He’s tremendous. I’ve said that. I think he’s a defensive matchup nightmare because he can do so many things well. The guy can run with the ball — obviously he proved that last week — he can catch it and run with it and he can block. He’s a talented, three-dimensional football player and he’s just blossoming now. I just kind of opened the can, and now they’re taking it to a whole other level. So they’re doing a good job with him.”

^ On this week’s game being special:

“Honestly, it’s really another football game. For me, it is. it has to be. You can’t get caught up in the emotional part of it because that’s not what this is about. This is about winning and losing. There’s a team that’s really hungry, very talented. They have some big-time players that are going to try to come here and win a game. And we’re finding ourselves and we have to do everything we can to win a football game.”

^ On coaching on the defensive side this year:

“It’s been great. Not very often do you get that opportunity. To be on the other side of the ball for 10 years, you get to look at it from a different viewpoint. I think everybody should have that opportunity to do that. Maybe not in the circumstances I’ve had to do it, but I think it’s good to learn. To me, that’s something I now can add to myself as a coach. I’ve really enjoyed coaching and being over there on defense and working with the defensive backs and helping on special teams. It’s really broadened my thought process as a football coach, so it’s really been great.”

    ^ More on Palmer:

“He can spin the ball like nobody can. He can throw a football and throw it well. I know the criticism of turnovers and the things that people say, but no one knows. I mean I don’t know if the receivers weren’t in the right spot or protections. I mean a lot of things go into interceptions that I don’t think people truly understand. But at the end of the day this is a really good football player. …

There’s other people that can throw it, but trust me, there’s not many than spin it like he can. He can really spin a football.

^ Is Palmer the same guy he was in 2005, his best season:

“I think he’s probably better, because he’s more mature. He probably understands the league a lot more. You’re not going to fool him with too many things. He’s probably seen it all and done it all. Again, he’s playing like everybody knows he can play. I know there’s a lot of yards there, and people will dispute that for whatever their reasons are, but when I watch him on tape, I see a really good football player.”

^ Is Palmer all the way back after knee and elbow injuries:

“He’s beyond that. He was beyond that a year ago. The guys’ tough, he a competitor, he takes care of his body, he loves the game, he works at it. Again, at the end of the day, he’s one of the guys in this league that you would like to have him because you know what he brings. He’s going to work every day and give you an honest day’s work.”

^ On being back together with Marvin Lewis:

“Me and Marvin go back a long way … I can talk to him and say things that maybe I wouldn’t say to anyone else. … So that part’s been really fun. And that’s what’s helped me grow. I’m probably a much better football coach than I was a year ago, and probably will be as I continue to go through this process.”

^ On getting a coordinator or head coach job next year — and being mentioned for the Cal opening:

“Whatever the next step is in my life is going to unfold. I try not to worry about any of that right now. What I’m trying to do is we’re worried about the Oakland Raiders, and that’s where I am right now. Try to take it just one step at a time. Whatever the future holds, it holds. I can’t worry about it at this point.”

^ On college job being intriguing:

“At this time what’s intriguing is beating the Oakland Raiders. That’s the only thing I can think about at this point.”

    GG

    I liked Hue.
I also think Cable did a lot of good getting us out of the 2007 Kiffin free agent mess that he inherited.

The simple fact is that down the stretch last year we got pummelled by good teams giving up an average of 38 a game in our losses starting with the Miami game.

Our offense could not run late when it counted and on and on.

We had a team that we could not afford. Wimbley and Bush were major contributors.

I think you are on target with many of your comments but we have had massive talent holes on this team for the last ten years that no coach can overcome.
We simply do not have the talent on the line of scrimmage to compete with good teams in the NFL.

  343. GG Says:

Hue had his flaws, and we all tired of his routine.

The thing I mainly focus on that validates his retention and his ’star’ was that as soon as he came here as OC, he immediately took us from a putrid offense we’d been for years (thanks to Knapp v1.0) into one of the better ones. And it continued in his rookie HC season.

Hue struggled in his play-calling too. Remember all the aggravation we suffered in those games last season. Him doing silly things, not taking FGs to cement games against the Browns. Etc etc.

Al got it in his head to remove Cable asap, due to him bringing girls with him, and the violence against women thing. Saw enough in Hue he wanted to make a last dash for a playoffs and a super bowl with Hue as HC. Like Al said, it’s just about getting there, and then anything can happen.

The worst thing to happen to us was Cable losing the plot forcing Al to fire him. If Hue could of stayed OC for a second year under Cable.

Then the next worst thing was Al passing away a season too soon, and early in the season at that.

The next worst thing to happen was after all Hue did resurrecting this offense, the three stooges (Mark Reggie and Dennis) brought Knapp back to destroy it all over again.

The defense is the #1 problem anyway. But one can’t help but be tortured watching this offense too, the mismanagement of personnel, the play-calling, etc.

  344. Whats a Drexl? Says:

    – Allen has no issue with the schemes used by first-year defensive coordinator Jason Tarver. It’s on the players to do their part on a more consistent basis.
“It’s been the same the whole year,” Allen said, as far as his level of involvement in the defense. “We haven’t changed anything as far as how we call the games. I’ve been pleased with the play-calling, and we’ve just got to do a better job overall of getting the right execution.”
    ===========================
That is some blinders on thinking there, plus I believe this counts as throwing his defensive roster under the bus.

Honestly I will not be surprised when Knapp comes back next year as OC.
DA is in full blame the players mode.

He who laughs shall now Cry. And those who Cry shall npw Laugh! -So now we are Ending -10 years of (100) LOSES!

    CAN ANYONE SEE THIS!

I can. It was prophesied by the ancients that a saviour (Al Davis) from the east (Brooklyn) would settle his tribe (Raiders) in the west (Oakland) and yey they would win many battles.

This semite warrior would have blessings from above and win praise and love from his flock (fans).

Due to his sins (bad draft picks and mismanaging contracts) yey he would suffer with 7 yr’s of darkness (7 straight losing seasons) after being denied the promised land (Super Bowl win in 2003).

Yey, the darkness would clear and usher in a time of plenty…but not before much suffering for the flock to atone for the semite warrior’s sins.

After the warriors demise a new saviour would rule, who would be the seed offspring of the semite warrior the ancients spoke of (Mark Davis)…the one spoketh of as having ‘head that looketh like bowl’.

This one will usher in new era of greatness and restoreth the tribe to greatness and proper place in the land.

DA is quickly becoming one of the worst and/or most unliked Raiders HCs ever.

  347. Charlie Says:

Drexl. THEY SHOULD BE THROWN UNDER THE BUS. WE LACK TALENT!

“I don’t think we have the great speed rusher coming off the edge, like a lot of people do,” Allen said.

“It’s been the same the whole year,” Allen said, as far as his level of involvement in the defense. “We haven’t changed anything as far as how we call the games. I’ve been pleased with the play-calling, and we’ve just got to do a better job overall of getting the right execution.”

“It’s a combination of pass rush and pass coverage,” Allen said. “We’ve got to do a better job of winning our one-on-ones, whether that be in coverage or whether that be in the rush, and those things work together. It really comes down to individual battles and we’ve got to win more individual battles.”

Friends, that is as close as you will get to any coach saying WE DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH TALENT ON THIS TEAM. Not my words, the words of a well respected NFL coach.

Perhaps, Callahan,Knapp, Allen, Tarver, Fox, Turner, Bresnahan, Marshall, Cable, Ryan, Walsh, Shell etc. etc. are all buffoons.

I think it should be obvious by now the problem is not coaching it is lack of talent. HAS BEEN FOR THE LAST TEN YEARS.

  348. Charlie Says:

I empathize with the frustration of losing since I have been a Raiders fan since 63′. We are not just losing. We are getting embarrassed. The punch line of Joan Rivers’ jokes. Bad very bad.

The cold hard reality is that there is no quick fix to ten tears of mismanagement.

I know many fans think that by changing coaches/schemes we can quickly turn this around.

We can not. This is a 3-5 year project because of the mismanagement that has occured for far too long.

  349. JONGRUDEN2013 Says:

You think you hate Dennis Allen?…wait for fatboy Reggies upcoming PC,…he will tell you all that he hired Dennis for his “It” factor,..that no coaches will be let go in the off season…but the PC is a must see event, set your dvr`s,…because I am willing to bet fatboy Reggie still has turkey gravy all over his face and shirt days after Thanksgiving.

You can talk coaching all you want.
    We lack talent.

    There is no quick fix.

Change coaches and schemes all you want. We have been doing that for ten years with the same results.
    Let’s get better players.

  352. GG Says:

Wauffle generated a pass rush with essentially the same DL core.

The problem is coaching — Defensive Line coaching and Defensive Co-ordinator.

Getting more out of less is something all NFL coaches (position coaches, co-ordinators, and head coaches) have to deal with 24/7.

Al was right, and Mark was right recently, in the comments about there are no excuses due to salary cap or lack of roster talent.

Btw, there has been a drop in roster talent too…and no wonder, given Reggie/DA have been systematically gutting it all year. It’s now down to 27 left from the 53 last year. And Reggie’s choices, in FA acquisitions especially, has been underwhelming. There’s no indication yet if guys like Crawford and Bilukidi and Bergstrom even amount to anything.

And to back up a common topic…the OL/DL is THE most important facet of football. It is the center from which everything else comes from.

  353. JONGRUDEN2013 Says:

Knapp has a contract for three years, he will be here,…I agree with football people, the system is a great one, teams like Houston are taking that system to the superbowl…but when you have losers like DMC and countless others on the team, theres no chance at all,..Knapp is a great OC, but hes working with a roster that no college team would recruit. Period.

  354. JONGRUDEN2013 Says:

Your last line says it all and we have ignored that area for ten years.

9 of your starting 22 (41%) plays exclusively in the box.
OLines create time and space. Dlines destroy time and space.
THAT IS WHAT THE GAME IS ABOUT. The rest of the pieces fill in the gaps.
A runner does not have the space and he looks like Dmac in Oakland; not Arkansas.
A linebacker fighting off Olineman that get to the second level looks like McClain in Oakland; not Alabama.
A QB without time looks like Brady against the Giants in a Super Bowl; not Brady against Oakland.
Do you really think we are going to be a consistently, strong, winning franchise building our lines with low round draft picks or free agents?
Taken to another extreme, do you think we will be able to beat our competition when they consistently use high picks to build this part of their team?
These are typically 270-320 pound athletes that need to have the agility and quickness of college level skill players. Do you really think you are likely to find premier or at least very good lineman in the fifth to seventh round or packing out at Wal Mart THAT ARE BETTER THAN WHAT OTHER NFL TEAMS HAVE?
    Really?
You are certainly entitled to your opinion but I would strongly suggest that the laws of probability are against us. Better yet, we have a classic example of what that strategy gets us; The 2012 Oakland Raiders.
HINT: We need to build through the draft and expend enough high round draft picks on lineman to ensure superior line play. The way the Raiders used to do it.
We have 10 years of evidence to show that what we have been doing DOES NOT WORK!

  359. DJ Johnny Says:

Charlie, 3-5 yr’s? Maybe that is what will end up happening but it doesn’t have to take that long.

If Reggie is as good as people say, it shouldn’t.

Maybe 3-5 yr’s for serious SB contention, but to at least get back to the playoffs and be a respected team, no GM’s are given that much leeway and low expectation.

I know guys here want to call our consecutibe 8-8 seasons a “mirage” and it didn’t really happen..(weak schedule BOTH years etc. etc.) but it is what it is.

He did not inheret a 2-14 team or an expansion team.

Even IF it was expansion team, Carolina went to NFC title game in year 3 of their existence.

Why should fans be patient and expect up to 5 yr’s to become a decent team? I’m not saying SB right away, but if Reggie is ANY GOOD AT ALL this can be done much quicker. And it should imo.

There is NO EXCUSE for being the laughingstock of the league after coming off 2 8-8 seasons no matter how many excuses people dig up to say how ‘unreal’ it was.

  361. GG Says:

The most disconcerting thing about DA imo is that the worse things have gotten the farther into the sand he buries his head, as in shifting culpability to the players and even the GM in whining about a lack of talent. Shifting culpability away from his hand-picked coaching staff and their play-calling, to blame the players. He’s on the gravy train and maybe he thinks he can fool Reggie with his ruse. Or maybe Reggie is indeed that easy to fool. Glad Mark chimed in.

Exactly. When youre HC jumps into the, “I could dunk if I had some Air Jordans” line of excuses, its pretty much over. This guy doesnt know what the hell he’s doing. And it shows in his desperation responses. 364. DJ Johnny Says:

People keep saying we’ve been horrible “for a decade”.

That is exaggeration. the Raiders were in the 2003 SB, then had SEVEN seasons of losing…bad… but 7 is not decade and then things started to look better with the consecutive 8-8’s.

If you look at it on it’s face, the team was ‘on the rise’. Now? Bad…very bad. Bad contracts to clean up etc. and all of a sudden the team that was good enough to be “average” for two yr’s is a mess and devoid of talent.

I don’t believe the loss of a guy who basically had one good game last yr against a 3rd string lineman is the devastating loss some say; or by losing your backup rb was the huge loss some say. Or by losing Routt (not in the league now he’s so bad).

If Reggie is skilled, than we need to raise the expectations a bit and expect better than being the joke of the league right now with no hope for up to 5 yr’s.

  366. GG Says:

If DA is toast, then the toaster will pop him up as soon as conclusion of the Bengals game.

He’s already making excuses for why they will lose this weekend before the game has even been played. He’s quite good at trying to paint himself the victim, getting the media to feel for him.

He’s a good guy, trying to fix the ways of evil degenerate Al, who built a talentless roster. Good to see other media outlets like Sacbee, Tafur etc are starting to see thru the BS and vivisect everything, whereas other media outlets *ahem* try their darndest to be chirpy and post superficially.

Reggie is a problem too, because he’s clearly as stubborn as Allen. His rookie year, and also doesn’t want to appear as tho he’s making mistakes, made a HC hire mistake, doesn’t regret any releases he made, etc.

A roster built for a type of offensive/defensive scheme can look talentless if tried to be forced into a whole other system. Reggie and DA are insistent on maintaining their chosen system here, and thus completing turning over the roster over a two-three year period until it’s 100% Reggie’s hand-picking.

And yes, there are a number of players that are dispensable, liabilities, and should be traded/cut. But it’s mostly the players newly brought in that have been underwhelming.

Though I have a great deal of respect for Mr Davis and I will always be a Raider fan, even the most casual observer can not possibly think we have enough talent to compete.

If we were losing by a field goal or at least being competitive against good teams I could say maybe coaching is a factor.

We are getting blasted by good teams because we lack talent. Last year down the stretch we got crushed by good teams starting with Miami and everyone thought Bresnahan sucked.
    Now Tarver sucks?

No, the players suck and we need to draft better.

“I don’t think we have the great speed rusher coming off the edge, like a lot of people do,” Allen said.

    ================

He had Von Miller last year, who is near the top in sacks this year and all he could manage was to field the 20th ranked defense.

This guy is full of excuses and cliches and devoid of acumen and direction.
    ————————————————–
It might be safe to assume that Von Miller is responsible for getting DA a HC job.

    =================

Mark’s stupid decision to allow Reggie to pick his own guy is what’s responsible. Reggie picks players, not coaches. Its still up in the air if he can even pick players. So far every single DB he has brought in has been garbage. Every single draft pick, except for maybe Burris even though he’s been owned the last two weeks, has been worthless. The only player he didn’t miss on was Wheeler, but he got him at the expense of losing a speed rusher. The Brisiel experiment has been a disaster and so far the DA HC decision has been an unmitigated disaster.

Bill Williamson disagrees with most of you guys:

“Yet, Davis’ actions Sunday worried me. He made some rare public comments, spurred by the frustration of another blowout loss which dropped his team to 3-7. Among the things Davis told reporters was this: “I’m patient, but I want to see progress. Not regression. I’m embarrassed, pissed, disappointed and I take full responsibility.”

I know many Oakland fans were happy that Davis made those comments, and he is certainly entitled to his opinions. But there were some key parts of his media session that struck me. Saying he was seeking “progress” means that Davis may not have patience. He also mentioned that the team’s woes this season shouldn’t be pinned on the team’s salary-cap situation in the offseason. That can be interpreted as a direct knock on the job his team’s brass has done. “

Got to finish with some momentum, try to win games to properly evaluate players (you can’t adequately asses players when we are getting housed by 4 TD’s and the other team is taking it easy on you).

If you can’t build a good draft picking 10th, and you HAVE TO pick in the top 3, well…..you will be the Chiefs. They have had top 3 picks, multiple times, and will have another one here next season.

“It will be in the best interest of the franchise if Davis simply allows his general manager and coach to grow. They are both first-timers in their positions. I suspect that’s what will happen, and I think it’s unlikely Davis will make changes there. But what if the losing continues in the final weeks of the season?

Exactly what kind of progress is Davis looking for? Will going 2-4 the rest of the way constitute progress? What if Oakland beats Cleveland and Kansas City at home but gets trounced in the other four games? Is that progress? “

I didn’t write that dummy. Those our the words of Bill Williamson of ESPN.

    ————————–

    Awful. Just awful.

I just read this Williamson column as well. It was terrible. He celebrates the “Raiders finally operating like a real sports franchise.” What does that even mean? Forget that we’re 3-7 and got our doors blown off three weeks in a row, we hired a general manager rather than having an owner-GM. Yee-hah!!! How amazing! We’re a “REAL” organization now. Just like Jacksonville, Buffalo, KC and Cleveland. Hooray for that.

I’m convinced. Let’s give Dennis Allen a 100-year contract extension. Forget results and track record. Stability is all that matters.

    What a joke.

Maybe, just maybe, if you are talking about picking between #1 or #2 for a sure-fire QB prospect, than maybe.

  447. Just Fire Baby Says:

Jax and KC both have one win, and we beat them already. They would have to finish with a better record than us for us to pick ahead of them (not happening).

Same with Clev and Car. They each have two wins, and if we beat one of them, we would have 4 wins, so they would have to finish winning 3 of their last 5 while we lose every other game, to draft ahead of them.

Neither scenario likely at all. We will be picking in the 7 to 12 range. And I am liking this Barr kid from UCLA. Jason Taylor, JPP type athlete and edge rusher.

Raiders go from playoff contender to also-ran in first year of new regime
    Published November 20, 2012
    Associated Press
ALAMEDA, Calif. – When the new regime took over the Oakland Raiders last January, they inherited an 8-8 team that fell one game shy of the playoffs, featuring an offense that could be prolific at times and a defense that was historically bad.

Ten games into the first season under general manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen, the offense has taken a decided step backward, the defense has somehow regressed and the Raiders (3-6) are nowhere near being a playoff team.

The situation McKenzie and Allen entered was not an easy one despite the presence of a capable quarterback in Carson Palmer, a big-play running back in Darren McFadden and a handful of other playmakers on both sides of the ball. But the early returns have not been positive.

All these writers will just look at the record they won’t check who the wins came against, how we fared against top teams, how many good teams did we beat and other stuff, how our D fared against teams like we have faced last 3 games all that stuff, but ofcourse the want to sell their newspapers so they will just right anything over-reactive fans want to read

    ^^^^^^^^^
Exactly. 2 of the 3 wins came against worse teams than the Raiders and they got lucky versus the Jags.

Beating Pitt was luck as well, because Pitt turned the ball over.

Same could be said for last year 6 of 8 wins came against teams worse than Raiders and 3 or 4 of them were pure luck

If McK wants to truly rebuild, then he needs to stop dancing around the issue and just trade DMC to Jets or Cowboys for a 2nd and a 4th in this years draft and get a 2nd in next years draft and get his valuable “picks”.

The way to get the picks he wants, is to ask for high picks and work you way down from there. McK should say to Jets and Dallas, give us a 1st this year and a 3rd for DMC and then they will refuse and counter and if McK can get a 2nd and 4th in this years draft and a 2nd in next years draft for DMC, then that would be a win IMO.

wow 2nd and 4th this year and 2nd next year for a player who next plays more than 50% of the games? only guy i can imagine giving up that many picks for DMac is Jerry Jones

    ^^^^^^^^^^
Jets and Cowboys are desperate for playmakers on offense. Jones is a very reactionary GM and likes playing poker and making a splash.

He would give up a 2nd and 4th for DMC. He loves DMC with the Arkansas ties and DMC is still dynamic gamebreaker/player in this league when healthy.

Whatever way you want to look at it.

Fact is…Hue’s Raiders were still one game away from playoffs despite Hue losing his legendary owner/defacto GM, starting QB and star RB for mid season and despite being strapped with a crappy azz DC.

Hue did an amazing job last year despite the circumstances and all the adversity he faced. He deserved a 2nd season with a REAL DC and a new GM.

    Davis and McK screwed up…period!

Also last yr. we were dominating Detroit before the defense folded (a playoff team) and Buffalo the D gave up FIVE straight 2nd half td’s to blow that one.

If our D could’ve held SD at their 1/2 yd. line we probably win that one as well.

A person could make the argument that yes…last yr. WAS a mirage…we should have at least been 10-6 if not better.

It doesn’t help that he’s had THIRTEEN td passes dropped this yr.

    That’s insane.

Crappy D couldn’t close and finish the Broncos at home last year and Tebow and McGahee beat them in the 2nd half last year.

    Just terrible.

I agree with you here in fact I am sure Jerry Jones is thinking about these guys as we type.
