Final: Bengals 34, Raiders 10

The Raiders need a better team or an alarm clock.

The Cincinnati Bengals spoiled the homecoming of quarterback Carson Palmer Sunday, winning 34-10 at Paul Brown Stadium after taking a 24-0 lead at halftime.

It was the ninth straight loss for the Raiders in the eastern time zone, dating back to a 27-24 win in Pittsburgh on Dec. 6, 2009.

The Raiders, 3-8, actually threatened to make a game of it for a brief time in the fourth quarter, but a strip-sack fumble of Palmer led to a Bengals field goal and an “inadvertent whistle’’ erased a potential touchdown return of a fumble by Tyvon Branch.

Cincinnati, 6-5, piled up 289 yards of offense in the first half and had a 1-yard touchdown run by BenJarvis Green-Ellis, touchdown passes of 2 and 5 yards from Andy Dalton to Mohamed Sanu and a 55-yard field goal by Mike Nugent.

Green-Ellis rushed for 129 yards on 19 carries for the Bengals, including runs of 48 and 39 yards.

Palmer had trouble getting the ball downfield against the Bengals defense, completing 19 of 34 passes for 146 yards, a 20-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore and an interception. He received boos every time he took the field, having left the team after the 2010 season and demanding a trade.

Things got mildly interesting in the third quarter, during which the Raiders had been outscored 123-34 coming in to the game.

Instead, the Raiders got a 55-yard field goal by Sebastian Janikowski and the 20-yard touchdown pass from Palmer to Moore to get within 24-10.

The Raiders then got good field position at their own 44 after forcing a Cincinnati punt, with the possibility of getting within 24-17 early in the fourth quarter.

The Bengals reasserted themselves at that point, with Manny Lawson getting around rookie Tony Bergstrom for a strip sack of Palmer that was recovered by Cincinnati.

It led to a 20-yard field goal by Nugent, only after the Raiders tightened at the 1-yard line following a 39-yard run by Green-Ellis for a first and goal.

Later, Raiders cornerback Joselio Hanson appeared to flip a Sanu fumble back in bounds where it was picked up by Branch, who ran into the end zone while the Bengals stood and watched.

The ruling was an inadvertent whistle, with Cincinnati getting the ball back. The game degerated into a scrum midway through the quarter with Andrew Whitworth getting tossed along with Lamarr Houston and Tommy Kelly of Oakland.

Whitworth was the instigator, going after Houston when the Raiders defensive end hit Dalton following a false start.

Former Raiders coach Hue Jackson was on the field helping to play peacemaker.

After order was restored, Cincinnati finished a 12-play, 84-yard drive with a 7-yard pass from Dalton to Jermaine Gresham to remove all doubt.

The Raiders return for consecutive home games against Cleveland, Denver and Kansas City.

This is what the guy at Walterfootball says about Manti Te’o being a top 5 pick despite not being a pure pass rushing LB. What he says makes sense and this is why Te’o would be a great pick by McK and the Raiders:

I could see Te’o being selected in the top five. I never would have projected any non-pass-rushing linebacker to go this high in years’ past, but things have changed. Consider:

    1. With the new CBA, teams can focus on the top player available rather than positional value because rookies aren’t making nearly as much anymore.

    2. Many teams are using matchup-nightmare tight ends, so linebackers who can cover these tight ends are now much more prevalent.

    3. Te’o is the best player available in a very weak class.

Alex your take on Pryor is flawed.

He joined the team after the 5th week last year they had no Chance to teach him the offense or see him practice. He was the number three after he arrived and back up qbs don’t get practice reps. We have no idea what the staff thought of him last year.

Pryor was made number 3 this year as learning a new offense put him behind leinart who came here becuase he already knew this offense. Carson was penciled the starter , leinart was number two so as long as the team was competing for the playoffs , if Carson was injured leinart could step right in. 3rd string qbs don’t practice Alex

They have not seen him in practice everyday like you claim.

Besides tr circumstance has changed. The playoffs is no just a laughable pipe dream and Carson is worthless at this point. He can only take hits for the rest of the season might as well develop and evaluate the youngster. Make him number 1 or 2 and give him major time in practice and on sunday

Mistic1 they know this just choose to ignore it to add to their argument. Hue never gave the kid the time of day because of no offseason very late in training camp. Suspended the first 5 games and so was oushed aside. This is really Pryor’s rookie year for all intent and purposes.

You have a lot of nerve calling me or anyone else ignorant.Saying I held Jackson responsible for everything isn’t exactly true.Saying I don’t hold Allen responsible for anything is also false. He is the head coach.Of course he is responsible.but it seems he is trying to do something unlike Jackson.Allen is getting involved in the defense, unlike Jackson who just let them stink and did nothing but let Bresnahan take all the blame.I blame Allen for not doing something about Knapp just as I blame Jackson for not doing a thing about Bresnahan. But,there comes a point where you have to look at the players and say you aren’t doing your jobs. You have assignments and you aren’t doing what you are supposed to do.Its like the old saying-you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. The good thing thing is Allen isn’t going anywhere and the players that can’t and won’t follow instructions are.I didn’t attack you.I voiced a different opinion.Too bad you seem to have such a difficult time accepting that.

It requires a steady dose of progression and that is what Hue gave us. This group of collective coaches lead by BIG REGGIE is a joke right now.

    ^^^^^^^^^
    Yep!

  • Gdog

Davis mentioned the regression, and it got worse today… especially on the offense. The defense played hard after halftime, or it would have been another paper-sack-over-head game.

Carson has maybe two seconds to complete a pass… what on earth has happened to our o-line? I seriously saw Barnes stand like a statue and let his guy go straight to the QB… he blocked NOBODY.

This is a grease fire… and I agree the blame goes mostly on the coaching. If it looked this hideous last year as regularly its on the players, but it didn’t.

To pretend this coaching staff is the answer, is blind faith at best, and delusion at worst.

    And what a coincidence?
priest blamed the coaches for the way they handled Russell. NEVER BLAMED RUSSELL.

And now priest is blaming the coaches for not coaching players who drop balls, don’t block, and suck at tackling. NEVER BLAMES THE PLAYERS..IT’S ALL ON THE COACHES.

Oddly though, priest has stated NUMEROUS TIMES HOW STUPID WE ALL ARE FOR QUESTIONING WHY A PLAYER WAS IN/OUT, STATING THE COACHES ALL KNOW MORE THAN WE DO, AND WE SHOULD STFU.

Of course, now priest is questioning everything the coaches do, stating none of them have a clue.

Consistency isn’t your strong suit, is it priest?

  • Priesttj12

Lefty12, maybe I touched a nerve with you but I ccritcize players all the time so I’m not sure what the hell you’re talking ab out. I just recently started attacked the staff during this losing streak because many want to blame a dead man for this mess.

It’s a collective effort and whenever players quit that is a coaching situation I’m not talking about ONE player I’m talking about the TEAM that is coaching. If it a few bad apples that’s an easy fix but when your team gets blown out 4 straight games that is NOT a few players that is your team and it points straight at the staff…..plain and simple.

I’m not sure how many times you want me to complain about each player and hold them accountable but obviously as I’ve said you choose to ignore it unless you don’t like it because it’s Palmer.
