Final: Bengals 34, Raiders 10

The Raiders need a better team or an alarm clock.

The Cincinnati Bengals spoiled the homecoming of quarterback Carson Palmer Sunday, winning 34-10 at Paul Brown Stadium after taking a 24-0 lead at halftime.

It was the ninth straight loss for the Raiders in the eastern time zone, dating back to a 27-24 win in Pittsburgh on Dec. 6, 2009.

The Raiders, 3-8, actually threatened to make a game of it for a brief time in the fourth quarter, but a strip-sack fumble of Palmer led to a Bengals field goal and an “inadvertent whistle’’ erased a potential touchdown return of a fumble by Tyvon Branch.

Cincinnati, 6-5, piled up 289 yards of offense in the first half and had a 1-yard touchdown run by BenJarvis Green-Ellis, touchdown passes of 2 and 5 yards from Andy Dalton to Mohamed Sanu and a 55-yard field goal by Mike Nugent.

Green-Ellis rushed for 129 yards on 19 carries for the Bengals, including runs of 48 and 39 yards.

Palmer had trouble getting the ball downfield against the Bengals defense, completing 19 of 34 passes for 146 yards, a 20-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore and an interception. He received boos every time he took the field, having left the team after the 2010 season and demanding a trade.

Things got mildly interesting in the third quarter, during which the Raiders had been outscored 123-34 coming in to the game.

Instead, the Raiders got a 55-yard field goal by Sebastian Janikowski and the 20-yard touchdown pass from Palmer to Moore to get within 24-10.

The Raiders then got good field position at their own 44 after forcing a Cincinnati punt, with the possibility of getting within 24-17 early in the fourth quarter.

The Bengals reasserted themselves at that point, with Manny Lawson getting around rookie Tony Bergstrom for a strip sack of Palmer that was recovered by Cincinnati.

It led to a 20-yard field goal by Nugent, only after the Raiders tightened at the 1-yard line following a 39-yard run by Green-Ellis for a first and goal.

Later, Raiders cornerback Joselio Hanson appeared to flip a Sanu fumble back in bounds where it was picked up by Branch, who ran into the end zone while the Bengals stood and watched.

The ruling was an inadvertent whistle, with Cincinnati getting the ball back. The game degerated into a scrum midway through the quarter with Andrew Whitworth getting tossed along with Lamarr Houston and Tommy Kelly of Oakland.

Whitworth was the instigator, going after Houston when the Raiders defensive end hit Dalton following a false start.

Former Raiders coach Hue Jackson was on the field helping to play peacemaker.

After order was restored, Cincinnati finished a 12-play, 84-yard drive with a 7-yard pass from Dalton to Jermaine Gresham to remove all doubt.

The Raiders return for consecutive home games against Cleveland, Denver and Kansas City.

Who did we criticize when the team faded last year?

Mostly same players, different coaches this year, same results.

Hmmm, maybe we just don’t have much talent? Last year we would also have been 6-10 if Manning played in Denver and we faced the Falcons, Bucs, and Saints instead of the weaker Vikings, Jets, Browns, and Cutler-less Bears.

Dknight007-give it up dude. Hue took an 8-8 team to 8-8 and could not beat Tim Tebow when he had to in the weakest division in football. Regression began with him IMO. Most penalties ever while Hue is off getting pedicures. Really? Not one other interview for a head coaching opportunity anywhere. He is/was a primadona who let the instant fame go to his head. Great guy but not a head coach at this point. I’ve read you’re posts. You’re smarter than this.

POOLE has been spot on about letting go of HUE JACKSON.. I know its a sore subject for most Raider fans.

They thought DA would actually work LMAO

    ^^^^^^^^^
Those fans who wanted Hue out, had no idea about who would be an improvement when replacing him. They just wanted Hue out. They’re thinking was warped, just as Mark Davis thinking was, when he was bent on getting rid of Hue.

    Terrible mistake!

  • Priesttj12

Lefty12 I don’t like him because OUR RECORD what is wrong with you??? If we were 8-3 I’d love him to death. That is your issue with Hue I think it was a waste to fire the guy yes but our record affirms everything I feel.

Win a DAMN GAME MAN why is that soo freakkin hard??

  • DJ Johnny

    Alex,

Mixed in with those losses was a win at KC that gave us hope and saved the season.

Plus..we didn’t get blown out against SD. We had a shot to win if our pathetic defense didn’t choke it away as they had done numerous occasions during the season.

Remember, we have NEVER LOST BY MORE THAN 3 TD’S FOR THREE CONSECUTIVE GAMES IN RAIDERS HISTORY.

    That is significant.

We “lost” our way? lol. What “way” did we ever have? We had zero winning seasons since Gruden/Bruce Allen/Gannon days.

How do you lose your way when you’ve been terrible 10 straight years?

It takes draft picks and time to change the fact we still have one of the least talented rosters in the NFL with ZERO Pro-Bow caliber players outside of our kicker.

Vegas knew we were a 4-win team. Doesn’t matter how delusional some of you were about it.

How quickly you guys forget how you felt after the team got blown out back-to-back weeks by the Dolphins and Packers, then lost to the Tebow-led Broncos, lost to the Lions, lost to the Chargers.

The blowouts to the Dolphins and Packers came after three straight wins.

The Bronco’s loss was with CP still learning the playbook.

Compare our roster to other AFC West teams.

    We have:

    The fewest 1,000 yard rushers.
    The 3rd-worst QB.
By FAR the worst WR group, with ZERO 1,000 yard WRs.
BY FAR the worst TE group.
BY FAR the least productive pass-rushing D-line.
BY FAR the fewest legit DBs.
BY FAR the fewest Pro Bowlers.

And that’s just in the weak AFC West.

You get beat by 21 or more points…

    when your roster sucks.

I saw our waiver-claim CB diving after a loose ball in the 4th quarter, swatting it to our safety who scooped it up and was followed downfield by 2 other offense-players hustling to block.

I saw our guys playing to the whistle and beyond it leading to a fight.

I saw our guys goal-line stuffing the Bengals despite being down by multiple touchdowns.

we lost 4 of our last 5 under Hue, getting BLOWN OUT by the Dolphins, Packers, and Chargers.

Our O averaged about 18 points a game during December.

Hue was the HEAD COACH and in charge of EVERYTHING, Defense included.

  • JB

Has anyone noticed that Denver’s defense has gotten much better since DOA left? Don’t know if missing DOA’s coaching skills or if Peyton Manning’s influence is so large as to upgrade all who come into contact with it. Probably the latter because our defense didn’t get any better. And mind you, that’s coming from a Bresnahan led D. Doesn’t say much for our current leadership.

Rather than the faithful beat the schit out of each other, we really need to direct our anger or disgust, your choice. to where it belongs – our GM, coaches & players who have attained new lows in accomplishments. They all suck & we deserve better. I for one will NOT continue to support, financially with season tickets, until this turd turns around. I suspect that will be over a period of MANY years.

    lets see: 42-32
    55-20
    38-17
34-10= worst 4 game stretch in Raider history, or at least from what i have seen. This team plays ZERO defense, doesn’t even try. Special teams aren’t special and now the offense has fallen off of a cliff and can barely get in the endzone. this team might be worse than the 2006 raiders, 1997 raiders and that says a LOT for raiders fans that remember.3-13 may be doable for this team.
