    Charlie,

Love your posts, and debating with you, no name-calling, thought out posts and good debates. Good morning Sir.

But the Giants last year were dead last in rushing. They had the lowest YPC of any team in 3 years.

I agree wholeheartedly with your take on the D-line. But the reason the D-line is so important, is because it is the ONLY way to contain a Saints, Pats passing game. You can’t stop them this day and age.

The Giants do that better than anyone with their D-line.

    ND!

    ———————–

Hell’s yeah, Dakota. I’m an ND fan myself. Still can’t believe they pulled it off. I figured they’d get tripped up at some point. Even a couple of weeks ago I was thinking that if they get to the NC game against Oregon or ‘Bama that they would probably be overwhelmed.

Now, I won’t be shocked at anything. That defense is legit and the offense can run the ball and move the chains, especially throwing to the TE. Mix in an mobile QB who can keep plays alive and move the chains himself and this team has that formula to just grind out wins. They are more than capable of giving ‘Bama all they can handle.

It’s funny that in the era of spread offenses and video game-like stats, that the NC game could come down to ND vs. ‘Bama. Two teams that are built on running the ball and playing great D, just like the smashmouth pro football formula of yesterday.

  9. Just Fire Baby Says:

Maybe we can get a Bruce Gradkwoski cameo today, to really kick off this reunion thingy.

  10. Chris in NY Says:

As for the Raiders today, we could get slapped down or we could come out inspired and ride Palmer to a double-digit victory. The Bengals are OK, but not world beaters. I think the 8.5 line is overly generous.

I’m hoping, especially for Palmer, that we come out and get the win. If we get thrashed again it’s looking inevitable that a reboot is needed.

Reggie took a gamble on DA as a one-year DC of the 20th-ranked defense. He can’t give him a long leash. If he does and things aren’t vastly improved by 2013, they should both be shown the door.

    BRUUUUUUUUUCE!

Talk about a working-class hero. Love that guy.

I’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is more Gradkow.

  12. Just Fire Baby Says:

We can lose the rest of the games this year, and both Knapp and DA will have until the week before the bye next year to move things in the right direction.

That’s where the rubber meets the road. 2013 bye week.

  13. Chris in NY Says:

And for those (SEC fans) who mock ND’s schedule, it’s not like they’re playing Creampuff U. They won @Oklahoma and @USC — hands down two of the best programs of this decade. They beat Michigan, Michigan State, Stanford and a bunch of other BCS conference schools. I think the only non-BCS school they played was Navy — a perennial bowl team.

Some of those schools had down years, but you better believe they still have frontline talent based on their stature. They’re not taking on non-FBS teams like the SEC teams like to mix in.

While on the subject, why are there SEC fans? Who the hell ever heard of being a fan of a conference? If the Donks or Chargers have good seasons is anyone in here rooting them on out of AFC West pride? Makes no sense.

  14. Charlie Says:

    Albert

My earlier post pointed to the fact that the Oline and the Dline win the game.

A QB is not going to be effective without a good oline performance in front of him.

My earlier post also referred to the ND game last night as how the Raiders used to win. By pressuring with four, stopping the run and running against 7-8 in the box.
The point being ND controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and won.

  15. Just Fire Baby Says:

ND has no reason to apologize, they played a tough schedule, tough enough to play in the BCS game.

I still think Bama or Georgia will pound them, but we shall see.

  16. Charlie Says:

    Chris

    Good point.
All the “experts” at the start of the year were loving the fact that ND had such a “brutal” schedule.

Many haters figured ND would be lucky to win 8 games and laughed that if they “ran the table” they would be the National Champs.

    Guess what happened?

Good old school footbal that wins. Dominate the line of scrimmage and you win.

I AM CONFIDENT REGGIE WILL BE DRAFTING TO BUILD THE LINES DURING OUR NEXT TWO DRAFTS.

Charlie is a good poster, but he doesn’t realize the NFL has changed. It’s a passing league, and you can find good OL (Gs & Cs) in later rounds.

  19. Just Fire Baby Says:

The Ravens and Falcons (especially ATL) have taken their offenses to new heights and are poised to eclipse previous playoff runs, by ditching the running game and airing it out.

  20. Raider O Says:

  21. Just Win Baby Says:

The trend has been to allow over 40 points per game, average about 2 yards per carry (with the exception of Reece), and expect Carson Palmer to win the game throwing the ball because there are no other options. If Oakland wins today it will be because Carson Palmer wins the game or because these other losers on this team decide to do their jobs. I dont expect much from this defense, and Palmer is only one guy. They know we can’t run the ball. I think the Bengals win this one by two touchdowns. Bengals 31 – Raiders 17.

  32. GG Says:

I defy anyone to prove to me that Pryor’s been getting any chance, any reps with the second team offense in practice to actually progress to #2.

He’s been shelved, just doing the same old things with QB Coach, going over the same old practice routines of dropping back alone, working on technique, throwing to a receiver, pumping iron, and tagging along with Palmer/Leinart to film study.

That’s not how you develop a QB, there’s a point of stagnation, you have to get them involved in a game-plan, actual team reps, get them scouting the defense of that week’s opponent, etc, raising the bar on them each week.

  33. MiamiRaider78 Says:

Either Pryor is being groomed to be the next Raider starting QB and Reggie feels the best way to maximize the learning process is to sit him i.e Aaron Rodgers

    or

You don’t get a chance in the NFL, you earn it.

Leinart outplayed Pryor in the preseason, and I am sure he has a better grasp of the offense.

Pryor will get his chance next preseason to prove he is better.

Until then, he does what ever other #3 QB in the NFL does. Work your tail off to keep a job.

  37. 2romes Says:

It depends on what type offensive they institute next year. It is imperative that the Raiders establish a decent ground great in order to get the best out Palmer. Palmer throws to the open areas often and anticipates his receivers to get to the open areas. This type of QB play works very well for some of the elite QB that have great repoire with their receivers TE and catching running backs. Without a decent running game and good of repoire with the receiver don’t expect palmer to save the Raiders.

    ——

It could also be a little of both 1 and 3, or 2 and 3.

I think 3 is also apparent. Knapp is notoriously bad at not being able to get more than 1 or 2 playmakers involved in a gameplan.

Look at McFadden week 1, throwing it to him 20 times and running him 20 times. Reece nothing, WRs bare bones, TEs nothing etc. Complaining that teams took Reece out of it right thru the 7 weeks until McFadden finally went down and he had to rely on him. Ausberry zzzz. Jones zzzz. Criner/Streater zzzz.

You’d barely win against struggling college teams with such garbage, let alone in a professional football league. 60. GG Says:

Just to show you JFB you’re missing the point…

Hue/Saunders last season got McFadden, Bush and Jones all involved. Jones had 16 or so carries for 73 yards in his rookie year. He discovered Reece who until then was just like Ausberry is now, uncorked. He got DHB, Ford, Moore, involved. He ran a lot of variation and packages to help expedite the development of rookies. He even got Pryor a snap before Campbell went down. If Campbell hadn’t, we would’ve seen some more Pryor packages. But because he managed to get Palmer, he had to throw everything into him, no time for Pryor, as we were 7-4 and winning the division.

This year, Knapp/DA have only been able to involve 1-2 playmakers every week. Seen a regress of Jones. Even when McFadden was healthy, and Goodson, he couldn’t find ways to get them all carries, like Hue/Saunders could.

Moore will have a better year this season than last, and Streater is already passing up Ford’s production from last season. DHB will have more TD’s. TE is bigger focal point of our offense. Reece will pass up his last TWO years of production, in about 12 games.

The biggest difference is McNinny. He sabotaged the season with his inability to adapt to a proven NFL offense.

  68. GG Says:

Knapp is going to overwork Reece like he did McFadden and get him injured. That’s not smart management of personnel, not showing any trickery either to fool DCs. It’s also BS Knapp saying the defenses were focusing so much on Reece they took him out of it in all those 6 or so weeks. They were focusing on McFadden because Knapp was running everything thru him. Soon as McFadden goes down, what suddenly no ones gonna gameplan against Reece? Suddenly Reece manages to get 190 yards from scrimmage in one game thru 20 carries and 20 targets? BS. It’s Knapp’s one-dimensionality.

Watch today…wouldn’t surprise if Reece goes down with an injury. So Knapp resorts to throwing the ball 60+ times, and in the process, further injuring Palmer’s arm (which has been wearing out from overuse evident in last weeks game).

Obviously our defense is also going to be putrid again, it’s the #1 problem.

  72. Charlie Says:

Good Morning Raider O and others

I really do recognize that efficient QB play is essential to winning in the NFL.
It always has been. I say efficient because some teams (Ravens in 2000 and Bucs in 2002) won with exceptional defense and an O that made few mistakes and ran the ball. Regardless of whether you are passing 60% or running 60% you need to win at the line of scrimmage. Let me try this.

9 of your starting 22 (41%) plays exclusively in the box.
OLines create time and space. Dlines destroy time and space.
THAT IS WHAT THE GAME IS ABOUT. The rest of the pieces fill in the gaps.
A runner does not have the space and he looks like Dmac in Oakland; not Arkansas.
A linebacker fighting off Olineman that get to the second level looks like McClain in Oakland; not Alabama.
A QB without time looks like Brady against the Giants in a Super Bowl; not Brady against Oakland.

Do you think we are going to be a consistently, strong, winning franchise building our lines with low round draft picks or free agents?
Taken to another extreme, do you think we will be able to beat our competition when they consistently use high picks to build this part of their team?
The law of averages says we lose that battle.

These are typically 270-320 pound athletes that need to have the agility and quickness of college level skill players. Do you really think you are likely to find premier or at least very good lineman in the fifth to seventh round or packing out at Wal Mart THAT ARE BETTER THAN WHAT OTHER NFL TEAMS HAVE ON A CONSISTENT BASIS?
    Really?
You are certainly entitled to your opinion but I would strongly suggest that the laws of probability are against us. Better yet, we have a classic example of what that strategy gets us; The 2012 Oakland Raiders.

Our lines have been built in large part by lower round picks and free agent castoffs (as Tim Brown said, a team will find a way to keep the players it really wants). Wiz and Houston to my knowledge are the only 2nd round Raider picks we have.) We need to build through the draft and expend enough high round draft picks on lineman to ensure superior line play. The way the Raiders used to do it.
We have to expend enough high round picks till we can consistently win the line of scrimmage.
We have 10 years of evidence to show that what we have been doing DOES NOT WORK!

Jim Harbaugh helped develop Kaepernick by giving him reps during games. Our staff expects TP to develop by watching the game and practice.

    ——————————————–
    O

Harb also tailored the game plan just for Kappy. He put him in a posistion to make plays and probably didn’t even use a 1/3 of the play book
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Great coaches find ways to maximize production from the talent available on their roster.

  75. MistaBrown Says:

    O,
Your hero Harbough has opened up a can of worms benching Smith. Once defenses start game planning The Beak (Kap) he wont look so good. He is on tape now he might get by today playing NO but he is going to hit a brick wall.

    Remember I told you this….

    Now go wipe your chin.

  76. GG Says:

Oh JFB, also watch for Palmer’s waning arm becoming further apparent. Did you not notice it last week? So many underthrows, lacking zip, players having to come back to ducks, etc.

Watch Knapp overuse Palmer in his “legacy” game, plus knapp abandoning the run early, and see that arm further wear out.

  77. mcfadden20. Says:

Bring on the bungles ,”legacy bowl” is on , with that said
76 -13 I gave extra 3 points to both teams cuz looks like weather isn’t that bad so it shouldn’t affect the kicking game

  78. mcfadden20. Says:

Raiders 76 – bungles 13. Palmer wins the first ever legacy bowl

  79. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Go Raiders!!

  80. Raider O Says:

    Good morning Charlie.
Great post, but don’t forget that those 2 teams were special. One of the best defenses in the history of the league.
Look at the last few teams to win the SB
    Giants
    Pats
    Steelers
    Saints
    Colts
    GB
    They are all passing teams.

  81. DJ Johnny Says:

“Legacy Game” ONLY IF we lose.

Everybody will be calling it just a meaningless reg season game in the unlikely event we were to win.

That’s true. It’s too early to judge, but I was impressed with the coaching and play calling.

  85. GG Says:

    #75…

I think Kaepernick’s wow will drop a little once DCs gameplan against him.

However…Harbaugh has now developed successfully: Luck @Stanford, Smith @SanFrancisco, Kaepernick @SanFrancisco.

There’s no reason to doubt Harbaugh’s prowess at QB development. His understanding of how to expedite it, which is what Cowher started with Big Ben’s rookie season and others have followed since….giving them small portions of the playbook, small assignments like one-side of the field, and gradually lifting the bar as they absorb.

  86. mcfadden20. Says:

Last time put on my McFadden jersey I got mixed results I will put it on maybe backwards or something and see what happens

  87. mcfadden20. Says:

You guys enjoy the game and keep your cool …..

  88. GG Says:

Have a good game everyone. I will be watching the game intently, no time for posting, and will chat with you all later in the night.

  89. DJ Johnny Says:

Palmer comes into battle today with one arm tied behind his back and a six shooter with one bullet…which will most likely be dropped in the endzone as has happened THIRTEEN TIMES already.

Don’t worry. He has the worst defense in the NFL guarding the fort for him.

Nope. We can safely say that he is NOT Superman…able to leap horrible defenses, porpous lines, and receivers who drop easy td passes in the endzone with a single bound.

    Damn him.

    Bring back Boller.

He got DHB, Ford, Moore, involved.

    *****************************

Moore will have a better year this season than last, and Streater is already passing up Ford’s production from last season. DHB will have more TD’s. TE is bigger focal point of our offense. Reece will pass up his last TWO years of production, in about 12 games.

The biggest difference is McNinny. He sabotaged the season with his inability to adapt to a proven NFL offense.

    ======

Hilarious, all those guys you mentioned were part of a VERSATILE attack that Hue put together. They can put up their stats in meaningless all they want, this offense is nowhere near what was Hue did. All Knapp-time has ever done is proven to suck, and he lived up to it again.

  91. JONGRUDEN2013 Says:

Enjoy the Raider game people,..due to Amy telling me to my face Jon Gruden will not be coming back I will get rid of this name Im using,…yes I am heart broken about it but will move on. She also assured me in no way will Reggie or Dennis be in job jeapardy at all, even if they go winless in 2013…Iv already renewed for next year, looking forward to being at the Browns game even though we will be blown out today,…and for sure lose to the Browns as well,…its easy to be a fan when your 9-1 kids,..times like these the Raiders are finding out who their fans are,..see ya next Sunday Brien.

  92. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

DA is nothing more then a chump.

Reggie needs to hire as many guys from the Stanford Defense/ Notre Dame defense as he can. Starting with Teo’.

Smart, physical , disciplined football players.

  93. Just Fire Baby Says:

Disappointed we had to put up with two years of Boller, and never got any quotes, in-game TV shots or controversary out of his wife.

I was kind of hoping we would get an Esther Canseco/Anna Benson deal out of it.

  94. Just Fire Baby Says:

Looks like a halfway full stadium.

  95. DJ Johnny Says:

A few minutes before gametime and DA is giving his emotional Knute Rockne inspirational speech:

“Ok guys. All we ask is you go out there and do your jobs today. The coaches have worked hard to put you guys in a position where you might be able to be in the position where at the end of the day you might be able to be in a postion where you may be able to have some success”

  96. Just Fire Baby Says:

Did the guy just say Carson has “lit it up” since coming over from the trade?

  101. Charlie Says:

Those teams still needed to dominate with their lines to win.
I also think, though an anomaly, the Colts had their highest rushing output of their season when they beat the Bears in the rain.

    All your points are valid.
My concern is that I believe too many fans ignore line play when assessing teams and what makes them successful.
The media feeds that to the populace and the average fan soaks it up.

The Niners with Montana had a tremendous front seven and a solid Oline that could get tough ground yards in the 4th quarter. All you hear about those teams is Montana and Rice and Taylor. The guys who did the heavy lifting were: Jesse Sapalu, Randy Cross, McIntyre, Barton, Rathman,Keena Turner, Fagan, Haley et all.

Dennis Allen cannot even keep the Raiders in the game before half closes.

  110. Rabbitman562 Says:

I will continue to say it. The Raiders did not need a coaching change. Hue gave the Raiders some confidence some swag and an identity. Hue was a much better leader of men. Dennis Allen is a complete joke. Not HC material at all. About as bland and vanilla as they come. And the Raiders are a reflection of that..

  111. Rabbitman562 Says:

We all know the play calling is atrocious. Nothing that sets Oakland up to score. 5 yard down and outs miles from the 1st down marker. Its been this way all season.

  112. rodn5yn Says:

News! Michael Huff officially gets my vote as a real corner. We need one more and a free safety.
