Grading the Raiders off their game vs. Bengals
By Steve Corkran
Monday, November 26th, 2012 at 12:14 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders based on their performance against the Cincinnati Bengals in a 34-10 loss Sunday. Here is his report card:
Pass offense
Carson Palmer (19-for-34, 146 yards, 1 TD, 1 interception) was under 200 yards for the first time in 16 games. The Bengals pass rush kept him from going to his wide receivers with any success, other than one completion to Denarius Moore for a 20-yard touchdown. Downfield passing was not an option.
Grade: D
Run offense
Marcel Reece had 74 yards on 15 carries and Jeremy Stewart had 26 yards on seven attempts. As it was, Oakland had 73 yards rushing in the second half, even though it trailed 24-0. Owen Schmitt got stuffed for a 1-yard loss on fourth-and-1 from the Cincinnati 45 in the first half.
Grade: C
Pass defense
Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton was 16 of 30 for 216 yards, doing most of his damage (13 of 20, 151 yards, 2 TDs) in the first half. The Raiders had no interceptions, and other than the third quarter, were fairly easy to exploit as they concentrated on WR A.J. Green, who still had three catches for 111 yards.
Grade: D
Run defense
BenJarvis Green-Ellis ripped off runs of 48 and 39 yards that set up touchdowns, finishing with 19 carries for 129 yards and a 1-yard score. Cedric Peerman had 61 yards on eight carries with a 31-yard run. Green ran 20 yards on a reverse. Those four carries accounted for 138 yards. The 30 other runs netted 83 yards.
Grade: D
Special teams
Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 55-yard field goal with plenty to spare on his only attempt. Punter Shane Lechler put three punts inside the 20-yard line and had a 42.0 net. There was nothing of consequence in the return game by either side. Grade: C
Coaching
The Raiders finally made some decent halftime adjustments, outscoring Cincinnati 10-0 in the third quarter and forcing the Bengals to four three-and-outs on defense. The first half, however, was a disaster on both sides of the ball. The Raiders were either unprepared for what they saw or not adequately motivated in terms of energy.
Grade: D

Raiders @ Bengals Analysis from PFF
- The Raiders three highest graded performers were Michael Huff (+2.6), Jared Veldheer (+2.6) and Marcel Reece (+2.5).
- Carson Palmer felt pressure on 44.7% of dropbacks. He completed just 30.8% of passes on those.
- Darrius Heyward-Bey led the team with 37 pass routes. Second was Denarius Moore with 35 with Juron Criner third (29). Rod Streater managed just 3.
- The Bengals highest graded players were Geno Atkins (+8.9), BenJarvus Green-Ellis (+2.4) and Michael Johnson (+2.4).
- Atkins managed a quarterback disruption on one of every three pass rushes, turning 33 attempts to get the quarterback into a sack, two hits and eight hurries.
- Not the best day for Andy Dalton who went 3-of-10 on passes aimed over 10 yards in the air.

people killed hu jack for a perceived lack of discipline
now those same folks give allen a pass?!?!
still getting dumb penalites personal fouls and blown assignmnets.
Whats more troubling is that most of the personal fouls and assignments issues are on the defnsive side of the ball
Isnt that allens area of expertise?
Allen was a bad hire, big mack will take his head if this contnues to happen.
Clearly he is worse than Bresnahan and that is a mouthful
this defense has been historically bad
are you davis haters happy?
do you miss press man yet?

I think 4 straight ugly losses necessitates a sacrificial lamb. Mark Davis needs to throw Raider Nation a bone. Fire somebody, anybody as a start. A show of solidarity and accountability. Start with Hoffman, go easy…baby steps. Build up to Tarver next week, then the coup de gras….finish the season firing Knapp the day before the final game. Just take them all out Freddy style. One by one axe them all!

Here’s one I wrote for you Mistic.
“Palmer is a turd that is swirling around the toilet bowl of NFL football that needs to be flushed.
His 7-13 record and 300 turnovers are the worst of nay quarterback in the history of mankind.
History will show him to an abhorrent human being who makes murders and rapists look like fine upstanding citizens.
He is personally responsible for the current fiscal deficit and should be tried and excecuted immediately for his horrific and unconsciounable qb play.
When he throws a pass it is as if the devil himself is attempting to make a play. Palmer falls woefully short of anything remotely resembling a high school quarterback at the lowest levels, no less a professional one.
I am personally insulted by his presence on the football field and find it to be a personal attack on my very soul.”
How’s that?

Raiders defensive linemen Lamarr Houston and Tommy Kelly were ejected in the fourth quarter after an incident with Bengals offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth that almost became a full-scale brawl.
Houston tackled quarterback Andy Dalton after the whistle blew for a false start. Whitworth confronted Houston, who didn’t back down, and Kelly quickly jumped into the altercation.
“They were probably looking for a fight because they weren’t doing much on the field,” Whitworth said.

He takes all the blame for the losses even when everyone on planet earth knows NO QB short of big 4 elite guys could win with this defense.

Many of the mock drafts have us picking #5. I may end up even higher. Almost all having us picking a DE for pass rusher.
Maybe it’s just me but our track record drafting in the first round really sucks. I want to make sure this time around we really get a player we can count on. I’m NOT comfortable with going for a DE pass rusher. I’ve seen all too ofter great college pass rushers that can’t do squat or become just ordinary when the get to the pros. I believe there is one really sure thing guy and it’s a position of need – MLB. Manti Te’o is as close to a sure thing as we are ever going to get. He could easily become the next Ray Lewis. From my perspective, Te’o is our absolute best choice. Agree or disagree?

Defense has sunk to uncharted depth.
Offense is putting up less points each week.
The play is bad my friends. If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a hundred times. The sea was angry that day. Mightily angry to say the least. We have a situation where draft picks and FAs’ won’t be enough. The wrath of an angry storm is worse than that of a woman scorned. DA has to be beside hisself in bewilderment and shock. His head has to be spinning like a fierce and out of control tornado. And do not forget about Reggie. The dude has to be on fire. Raging out of control fire. The sun darkens and noise from beyond the gates of hell are shrieking and begging for Raider destruction. Only a good man, say Gruden if you please, or Hue, maybe Cable, ShawII, ANYBODY, can bring this franchise out of the bottom circles of hell and beyond to which it has sunk. If he won’t, then we are forever doomed to be lost at sea drifting aimlessly. A frozen time warp that is not frozen. Drifting aimlessly for all eternity and beyond. It is the utmost hopeless feeling of despair you would not even wish upon your worst enemy. A collapse is imminent. A good man is needed indeed. The fate lies beyond our utmost comprehensive ability. Repent and do the right thing. Mark and Amy, Repent NOW. Get on your knees and submerse yourself in prayer and pray for guidance. Do the right thing. Deliver this team from the claws of hell and into the Light.

Johnny, as a Raider fan I am sure you understand that we are not held to the same standard as the rest of the NFL. If Buffalo had given up a 1 and 2 for Palmer it would be called bad luck that their defense was awful, their ’star’ running back was invisible before being hurt and their wide receivers can’t catch a cold. In Oakland, it is Palmers fault. Palmer actually drove to Alameda, negotiated the terms to his own trade and then became a member of the team. He also delibrately lubes up the ball after it leaves his hands so that the wr’s don’t catch it… oh and he was drugging DMAC before the games to ensure he wouldn’t be successful.

There is no chance for playoffs so why not use TP and see what you got. Got nothing to lose. Get all the young guys in and see who will be here next year. As soon as the season is over there should be a mass exodus starting with Seymour, Kelly, McClain, Mitchell, Barnes, Smith, Breisel, Carlisle followed by either a trade or dump of Palmer & Dmac. All those overpriced, underachieving salaries go away & can start signing some real players.

what does this have to do with palmer?

I’m just fan of QBs around the league, Cutler still scored a TD with them , JC put combined 10 points on board in 6 quarters, with M forte, B marshall on the team lmao

you have no answer for your undying love affair with this failed fraud of qb palmer.
So you cant bear to face up to the weight of your ridiculous proclamations and predictions about the raiders behind palmer.
Now that it has been exposed as empty hyperbole you have been reduced to talkng about players that dont play here.

The problem with JaMarcus was that he didn’t care. He got paid (a LOT more than Palmer will ever make in Oakland), and that was enough for him.
Carson Palmer is none of that here, and that’s the big difference. He’s making the effort and acting like a professional, and that’s why people cut him a little more slack, and also why it’s kind of a shame that you pound on him the way you do.

In the real world, if you work for another man. Right or wrong, makes no difference. If that man sees you as a liability, you’re fired. Ain’t no right or wrong about it. That’s life. Ever been fired or laid off? No sense in whining and moping. You get up off your duff and get another job and pay them bills.

November 26th, 2012 at 1:14 pm
Ok guys lets play this out here…
Some said that we shuld have tanked the season and have Boller the starter for the rest of 2011…maybe one more win, maybe 2 if lucky! He would have had no DMAC either the rest of the way!
We would have saved our draft pics and maybe traded up to get RG!!! (Since no way the Colts were letting Luck go). Behind this line and our regressed D (considering Reggie did the same thing and blew up the coaching staff), would RGIII, let alone any qb have done better?
i don’t like the trade, especially for a first and a second (two firsts had we made the AFC Champ game last year), but right now, since DA is stubborn NOT to at least activate TP6, who would have done better!

that’s a bit of a revisionist history what-if tale doncha think?
We came into the season last year coming off the lockout and remember the player only workouts led by Campbell. All the optimism we had coming into the year and Hue’s build a bully campaign? And then add in AD’s death and the family pride. Do you envision the team ever taking a “suck for RG3″ campaign seriously? I don’t. Even now.

You complain about Carson’s salary, but guess what, the guy has take TWO pay cuts since he arrived here. He played out the end of last year for 2.5 million dollars, and he is playing this season for 4.7 million. How can you hate him for that? He is due to make 16 mill next year, but so what, he has already shown he is willing to do whatever he can to help the team, I am sure he will do up another new contract when the time roles around.
It all comes back to the very basic point. You hate Carson Palmer. You can’t hide it. You try with your thinly veiled half truths, like ignoring the fact that our receivers are doing everything but handing the defenders the ball on half of his INTS. You ignore games when he throws for 400 and 4 tds and we lose anyways, and you say things like “I hate Palmers turnovers, I would rather have Mike Vick” and wonder why we question whether your points are racially motivated.

JC’s season was over with a broken collarbone, and he bolted out of town for literally the first offer he got. He didn’t try to go to camp and beat Palmer, he didn’t leave for a starting gig. He QUIT ON US and bolted town because Hue hurt his feelings.

Typical fan reaction when nothing is going well: Blame everyone, cut everyone.
Take a step back. Palmer, DHB, Moore, DMC, Reece and a whole bunch of players were on the up-n-up last year. You could see their potential and they were performing better and better. This year, it all stopped (save Palmer …and Reece to an extent, he’s still not used right). So what has really changed from last year to this year?? COACHES IDIOTS!!! ITS ALL ABOUT THE COACHES!!! (And possibly management ..i.e. GM …but the coaches have the direct and immediate impact on these players on the field).
Thats you key. Thats your problem. Its not the players so much as it is the change of coaches. The whole lott needs to be fired. We HAD one of the best coaching staffs on offense in the league last year and this idiot DA (and Reggie) blew the whole thing up!!! Thes guys don’t know what the fuk they are doing. Why are you so anxious to give them another shot next year?? So we can have some continuity? Thats the craziest, stupidest argument I have EVER heard. You’ll suffer another year of horrific play just to have some continutity (sucking). Think about that will you?

First off, I’m not a redneck, and I resent the implication that I would cut Palmer slack because of his skin color. I’m a Raider fan that wants EVERY player that’s here to succeed, and I couldn’t care less what his ethnic background is. So watch your mouth.
Second, Russell was a lazy fatass that quit trying as soon as he got paid, and should incur the wrath of the entire Nation for it. If you don’t think so, then maybe it’s you that’s got the issue with skin color.

Last year DHB became our most productive WR. This year he seems to have regressed.
Last year Moore was viewed as the next best thing, running routes with precision and becoming a dynamic deep threat player. This year he can’t even get on the same page.
Last year DMC was one of the best RBs in the league with the stats to prove it. This year he can’t even sniff 4ypc.
Lil Wiz was viewed as the next Wiz and the OL was looking more and more SOLID for years to come. This year Wiz is having issues nad the OL is in shambles.
I can go on and on …the only thing that has changed is the coaches (and management). These boys are moving this club drastically in the wrong direction. They are the ones that need to be cut. MARK DAVIS OPEN YOUR EYES MAN!!! THESE BOYZ ARE CON-ARTIST. THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY ARE DOING. THEY CAN ONLY TALK A GOOD GAME. THE PROOF IS ON THE FIELD.

“That was one of the keys to our game plan, to get pressure on him,” Peko said. “Because we knew when he has people in his face, he tends to overthrow balls and whatnot.”

November 26th, 2012 at 1:57 pm
Here we are debating whether this is the worst Raider team ever and whether the coaching staff should be fired.
It’s debatable whether this is the worst Raider team EVER – but it’s NOT debatable that this team STINKS.
No one (or hardly anyone) thinks the UDDER FAILURE is doing a good job.
There is agreement that the personnel stinks, but there’s also a consensus that Titty Boy and his Krappy staff are NOT maximizing production or preparation – thus, the weekly blowouts we endure.
That’s where we are.
Where do we go from here ?
Stick with Titty Boy and his brain dead Krapp staff ?
Who feels confident that Tits and his Krapp staff will succeed with a revamped roster ?
Stick with Tits and Krapp bcz we don’t want to appear to be dysfunctional or bcz a quality coach won’t come here ?
Hey, if you think Titty Boy and Krapp can get it done with better players – I’ll accept that as a reason to retain them.
But if you want to retain Tits out of a fear of being labeled ‘dysfunctional’ or if you believe that there aren’t quality coaches that would relish the opportunity to coach an NFL team (even if it is the lowly Raiders) – then YOU’RE the one that is dysfunctional – and I guarantee you that the ‘woe is me’ and ‘can’t do’ mindset will doom this franchise to perpetual FAILURE.
Can’t be scared of change when the status quo is unacceptable.
RAIDER ON.

From Elias and ESPN: the 169 points the Raiders have surrendered over their last four games is the second-highest four-game total in the NFL since the 1970 merger, behind only the 2004 Tennessee Titans, who gave up 177 points in a four-game stretch.
For the first time in franchise history, the Raiders have lost three straight games by at least 21 points.
Said Dalton: “They were doing the same thing the whole time with certain formations, certain things. We felt like we liked the matchups that we had…”
Palmer was sacked four times, including twice on the Raiders’ opening possession. He threw an interception. He lost a fumble….”

Still doesn’t mean that all could be fixed, still doesn’t mean we could convert to 3-4 to play the guys he invested in McClain, Seymour in their natural players, still didn’t mean we could get rid of all the dead weight in just 1 year, didn’t mean all of a sudden we had cap room or more draft picks

+++++++++++++++++
It is not even debatable that this franchise is viewed as dysfunction by the media, many Raider fans, all other NFL fans, many NFL players (Seymour went to Bilicheats house and fell to his knees and begged not to be traded here) and within the coaching community as evidenced by many coaches saying no to the job….the limited list of coaching candidates Reggie had to work with last year….and the low quality assistant coaches who we had to settle for this year and in year’s past.
That stuff simply is not debatable.
However, the other thing that is also crystal clear is that even one of the prior coaching slugs we may have to settle for due to said franchise dysfunction, like a Jim Fassel or Kevin Gilbride, would still likely be an upgrade over Dennis Allen….it simply cannot get worse than what we are seeing right now…..so far this coaching staff is making the Cable coaching staff look like geniuses, and that is very hard to do. And everyone knows I was not a Cable fan.
Dennis Allen looks the part (aside from the t1tties), and he talked the part, but based solely on the product he is sending out onto the field every weekend, it is clear that the reports of him having the “it” factor were greatly exaggerated.

Gruden?? lmao , why is it always the coaching? maybe it’s the freaking talent level , or the players are not brought into play their real positions, remember Sapp at END experience? remember Brayton drafted in 1st rd and tried out at OLB in 3-4, remember McClain came from 3-4 alabama, Seymour came from 3-4 Pats, Houston was a DT at Texas , list is too long of dumb decisions and you guys think it’s all coaches fault?
___________
because this same team was 8-8 last year and the year before
—
I would believe they would go 8-8 again facing the same schedule , maybe a win less due to regression in OC coach , and DL = passrush

Raiderdebo – I’m color blind.
‘check casher’ applies to anyone accepting pay without A. Working for it or B. consistently failing to produce the desired results.
You really need to take a break from viewing the world in terms of race.
There’s plenty of opportunity to amaze everyone with wit instead of racial hate. besides thats old and mostly just boring.

do we need an edge rusher, yes, but we have the offensive weapons (palmer, dmac, reece, dhb, moore, myers, ausberry, wiz, veldheer) and enough guys on d (houston, bryant, kelly, burris, wheeler, huff, bartell) to at least not get blown out. Look at the st louis, Miami, Minnesota and Seattle. How much better is the talent on the those teams?

His view: we are due to pay DHB – $7.7M, DMAC – close to $6M, Seymour – $7.5M, Kelly – $6.5M, Palmer – $13M, Sea Bass – $3.8M, Huff – $4M, Briesel – $4.35M. Do we pay all these players this much or we restructure a paycut or we cut and get new players? Unreal to see the salaries for such players being so high

Shaughnessy looked good when Wauffle was handling the line, just like the rest of the D-Line players. Wauffle moved the line around, changed the gap points on plays, sometimes moved the line in, sometimes out. We get no pressure ever, because we always have our linemen bunched in. I guess when you are expecting your DE’s to get pressure every time when they arent even lined up outside of the Tackles, EVER, than yeah you do need that speed rusher like DA said. Our line shows the same look every time. Then when we do send pressure from DB’s, its always from 5-10 yards out and the QB has already gotten rid of the ball. What do these guys look at when they go over film? What the hell have they been doing all year?

DA’s ONLY problem is LOSING.
WINNING is only thing anybody cares about at the end of the day.
We can sit here and cite all the reasons we shouldn’t be expected to win etc. etc. but the media, fans and players it seems..will continue to be on him despite any valid excuses or not.
Losing is just bad for everybody and brings out the worst in people and little things like Palmer having to be the one to exhort the team etc. become BIG things.
We win and nobody cares about any of that stuff. When you lose…no matter what the excuses…everything gets magnified.
People don’t like losing…and they want answers. They want apologies, they want someone to tell them it’s all gonna get better….fast.
That’s why Mark’s words were somewhat encouraging in the sense it showed that he gave a crap about our misery. He doesn’t like to see the people who are supporting him and his organization to have incur embarrassment becuz of it.
We’re a disgruntled, fed up fan base right now, and hearing excuses…valid or not…is not what the majority want to hear right now.

I guess old fool kell will have to cancel his many real estate meetings friday to hear big dummys pc,..just like he had to cancel all his open houses and whatnot today so he could be on the couch for Dennis`s pc. Hey old man kell, when I was at Remax in San Jose, I never had less then 300 listings at one time. I shared a lot of them but never did the listings number ever get under 300. You are no realtor dude, realtors dont sit at home to watch a head coach of a 3-8 football team answer softball questions…get some listings, close some of them…is Dennis Allen really more important to you then your real estate career?…..sad.
=============================
real estate career?
Guess we differ on what career means.
Sustained employment over a period of time is a career.
Never getting off your arse, while the mrs works, isn’t a career. It’s called lazyassnogoodloser.
Glad we cleared that up.

Ofcourse Whiners should have fired B Walsh after 1-15 year, Cowboys should have done the same after JJ went 1-15 oh yeah how about Pats , weren’t they better team before Bill Belichic who never succeeded before in Cleveland and comes to NE and have worse record than year before, I’m pretty sure those guys who went 1-15 in first year then went on to build dynasties had nothing to do with the talent they were surrounded by in first year right?
November 26th, 2012 at 3:11 pm
Maybe Reggie understands that this division will be won by the Broncos for as long as P. Manning is there, so he is going to tank every year to build a super roster of high draft picks which will then explode onto the scene in 2017!!!!
November 26th, 2012 at 3:12 pm
It gets frustrating driving or flying up to the bay area from LA week after week only to see the team not compete. That’s all I ask for. These guys are paid alot of money to compete. Can you say that for the last several games these guys have come out and play with fire or desire in the first quarter? We need to vent a bit after shelling out thousands of dollars to follow our favorite team. I get a kick out of everyone comments. Lets me know how some of the fan base feel.
Ignore the idoits and listen to the fans that really care!

There is no reason that Pryor doesnt get a look.
No logical reason.
Bergstrom, Pryor, Bilukidi & Crawford have to be played, have to.
Giordano, Seymour, Palmer do not need to see the field.

bad examples
do you did you just start watching football?
walsh and jimmy Johnson had rough starts but they also had people in place they wer sold on as the future in the qb spot aikman and motnana
Please dont tell me carcas palmer is in this class.
belichic sucked in Cleavland and was simply a better prepared candidate by the time he landed in new england and again he ended up with tom brady
brady montana aikman hall of fame multiple trophy winners. we can also add namse like brushci, rice, lott, craig, haley and so on.
palmer….. hardly
besides i dont remember any of those coaches posting the all time worst defense along the way or being blown out in as many games.
In other words they all had at least a couple of plyers to build around and presented some sort of evidence they belonged.
allen simply looks over matched at this point

November 28th, 2012 at 1:02 am
What a side into the negative zone for the Raiders! Bringing in this train wreck season was doomed from the start starting with Spuds, Allen, and keeping Crybaby Palmer! Here’s what USA Today have to say “Carson Palmer, Oakland Raiders: The team traded a 2012 first-round pick and 2013 second-rounder for the former Cincinnati Bengals signal caller, but they’re 7-14 since acquiring him. That’s enough time to know he’s not the franchise redeemer. Second-year QB Terrelle Pryor has tantalizing upside but needs playing time to develop.” Hey Mark, walk down to corner store and pickup the local fishwrap and read what the fans want! Or sit down and use Grandpa ancient computer to look for Al’s player file and offer either “Chucky” or Hue their job back and make it quick or Philly or Cal State will have their men!!!!!!!!!!!
