Raiders-Bengals postgame thoughts, observations

By Steve Corkran
Monday, November 26th, 2012 at 12:07 am in Oakland Raiders.

Tried a new approach this time, waiting awhile after the Raiders played before putting pen to paper, so to speak. As it turns out, there is no putting a positive spin on the latest debacle, this one a 34-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
In the process, the Raiders droppd to 3-8 and invited comparisons to the 2006 and 1997 Raiders teams that many remember as among the least successful.
They also are relegated to competing for a wild-card berth, as silly as that might sound, given they no longer can win a two-way tie with the Denver Broncos for the AFC West title. The Broncos improved to 8-3 and look light years better than the Raiders right now.
The Colts (7-4), Bengals (6-5) and Steelers (6-5) are the teams in the lead for the two wild-card spots in the AFC Playoffs.
Given that, we got a pretty good look today at just how far away the Raiders are from being a playoff-caliber team.
The Bengals jumped to a 24-0 halftime lead, coasted through the third period, survived a brief scare and pulled away for a convincing victory.
Cincinnati’s offensive and defensive lines outplayed their Oakland counterparts, Andy Dalton was more efficient that Carson Palmer at quarterback and, really, what else matters?

– Coach Dennis Allen speaks with the media Monday at 1 p.m. in his weekly news conference.
The interview everyone is eager to hear and read is the one scheduled Friday with general manager Reggie McKenzie.
It should be interesting to hear what McKenzie has to say on the heels of his team’s fourth straight loss, with the coach he fired on the opposing sideline Sunday high-fiving his new players, and the Raiders far less competitive this season than they were when he assumed the new role in January.

– The Raiders have allowed 169 points the past four games. Their point differential on the season is minus-138, two points better than the league-worst Chiefs.

– Not sure if many people noticed, but Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick recorded one tackle. He is the player the Bengals selected with the first-round pick they received from the Raiders as part of the compensation for trading Palmer last season.
Coincidentally, Jackson now is coaching Kirkpatrick. Jackson, of course, is the one that engineered the trade for Palmer. The Raiders also owe the Bengals their 2013 second-round pick as part of the deal.

– Rookie Tony Bergstrom got some more playing time Sunday. It figures to benefit him heading into next season, when he will be a candidate for a starting spot somewhere on the line.
On one play, Bergstrom was unable to keep up with a Bengals defender that got to Palmer.

– Palmer attempted eight passes for wide receivers Darrius Heyward-Bey and Denarius Moore. The only one that resulted in a reception came on a touchdown to Moore late in the game.
Heyward-Bey dropped a perfect pass on one throw, and Moore had at least one that seemed catchable.
On the bright side, rookie receiver Juron Criner caught three of the five passes thrown his way.

– Linebacker Philip Wheeler and defensive end Matt Shaughnessy recorded one sack each for the Raiders. That gives the Raiders 13 on the season, 3 1/2 fewer than 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith.

– Still don’t understand the rule where the Bengals lost a fumble, the Raiders recovered, everyone agreed on both, yet because of an inadvertent whistle by the officials the Bengals were allowed to choose between taking the result of the play or replaying the down.
Huh?
Fortunately for the Raiders, it didn’t cost them the game. It did cost them a chance to get back in the game and have an outside shot at a comeback. They deserved that chance.
Look for this rule to be one of several that gets changed in the offseason.

    Really?

Cp3 >>> Matt Cassell, Bay area >> anywhere in US

HAWAII is not in US, LOL JK, but I’m talking from standpoint where the teams are located, Bay Area is >> than all the other sports cities

last year JC made it a point to get dhb involved early and it led to dhb improving by leaps and bounds.

Enter palmer who instantly favored moore, and after a year and a half the entire wr group looks worse than they did before his arrival.
    ________
DHB Myers and Moore are better, but they still drop to many balls, can’t deny that. And palmer is throwing to all the recceivers, JC hardly even threw the ball

    JUST SCROLL, BABY.

  • Just Fire Baby

In 14 games with Campbell, DHB caught 2 TD’s.

IN 19 games with Palmer, he has caught 6.

  • Purvisman/Intrepid// Full Disclosure

Does anyone even read this swill anymore?==============

I do. He’s becoming more eloquent. May have to go back and compile a whole post of his hilariously diparaging phrases.

Didn’t Steve Sarkisian tell us to piss off?

There is nothing “illustrious” anymore about the Raiders unless you are a former Raider.

If we fire DA, we will be scraping the bottom of the barrel of available coaches.

    ===========

    dont believe the hype

There are only 32 nfl hc jobs, there are plenty of coaches that would sellt here mother and trade their gonads for any one of them, including the raiders.

    LOl lets not be ridiculous.

any nfl hc job has a dearth of candidates that want the job and plenty are well qualified quality coaches.

    Bdd coaching

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

Also let it be said that most of the blog will only consider former nfl coaches as quality candidates ( gruden, reid, cower and so on), there are many quality guys that you have never heard of.

A coach doesnt need a big name to be good at his job.

So while the blog morons have a closed mind and limited information on perspective coaches big mack is not hampered by such limitations.

Same can be said for his choice of QB, no?

    ————–

In 2011, DHB’s averages with both QBs you mention (not counting games DHB didn’t play in or the 2 games where each QB didn’t play the entire game):

    Campbell/DHB: 4 rec, 65.75 yards, 0.25 TDs
    Palmer/DHB: 5.3 rec, 77.29 yards, 0.43 TDs

Let’s compare apples to apples folks, and trash all the speculation. Under the same coaching staff, the Palmer to DHB connection was BETTER.

    Knapp is the problem here!

  • mcfadden20.

WIMBLEY, KELLY, SEYMOUR = 22 sacks last year

2012, No wimbley, long in the tooth Kelly and chronic knee seymour

And having every asst coach in the NFL to choose from as well as all the one’s we(and you) have never heard of, he picked DA. Hmmm.

  • Al_is_theraiders

bring in ried as gm, gruden as hc and trestman as oc…

  • MarcusAllen

With an O-line like this you need a mobile QB not a QB that will go down like a chopped tree and one that routinely coughs up the fumble.

Grads couldn’t throw long but he could buy time. Pryor needs some reps in garbage time if only to increase his trade value.

This staff cannot adjust at half time nor when the season is basically over. Palmer had to lead the half time speech. Jeezus.

Can it just be over already ?

sometimes going to a familiar team is better, we’re #1 WR, C, and RT and OC away from becoming stud on that side, we will only need to get a few stud pass rushers on D side to become average , and then we will be talking

  • DutchRaider77

Isn’t Bowe looking for $$$ and to be a team #1 WR?

What other teams can give Bowe a big contract and be the teams #1 receiver?

  • MarcusAllen

Forget Reid – the fat man is not what we need. Gruden isn’t coming and he’s not the fired up coach he was when he first came here.

Go get the coach we all hated in the eighties and nineties.

Go get Marty Shotenhiemer. I have always had deep hatred for Marty but also respect. Because he won. He always had a competitive team.

    Marty Ball Baby.

  • Al_is_theraiders

idk just get rid of allen….

  • raiderjhawk

I wanted to post something that I was thinking about yesterday while I was watching the game.

Carson Palmer isn’t the problem, I actually think that he is a good QB. The problem is Carson Palmer is the wrong QB for this team right now.

Our O line is horrible this year, Palmer gets no protection or time to throw the ball. Our Scheme is pathetic and most of the players don’t fit it in any way. I whole heartedly believe that if we had a young, agile, scrambling type QB right now I think we’d be a lot better off.

People want to blame Palmer that’s fine, but I think there is plenty of blame to go around from top to bottom. I was actually hoping to log on and see that Knapp was fired, couldn’t get that lucky I guess. This team has no identity, we just aren’t good in any faze of the game, this season is over.

  • Al_is_theraiders

buy 1 raider ticket get three free…keep repeating that mark..

  • MarcusAllen

Listen have Marty light the flame and let bygones be bygones.

    Marty HC
    Juan Castillo OC
Greg ‘kill the head’ Williams DC

    Howzat ?

  • Al_is_theraiders

palmer is a good qb but the scheme is built for a robot who cant think…

  • guest123

Dennis Allen seems to have lost the lockerroom. If he ever had it to begin with. This season has turned to chit fast and DA looks shellshocked most of the time. I think he regrets ever leaving Denver. He’s not ready for this, maybe never will be. As green as he was as a rookie HC, Reggie should have never given him unilateral authority on the coaching hires. He needed to be surrounded with old veteran coaches who have been there and done that. He’s been trying to learn this on the fly and taking notes while getting schooled.

Get your large paper bags ready and cut out the eyeholes and drippy tears. It’s gonna be Fugly.

  • mcfadden20.

However, I will NEVER wear a paper bag! :)

  • guest123

post 491. Good post. I agree Carson isn’t the problem here. A dysfunctional coaching staff with failed schemes, failed teaching, zero in-game adjustments, and underachieving and undertalented players surrounding Carson is the problem.

  • raiderjhawk

I just want to see whole sale changes because this is embarrassing.
