Raiders-Bengals postgame thoughts, observations

Tried a new approach this time, waiting awhile after the Raiders played before putting pen to paper, so to speak. As it turns out, there is no putting a positive spin on the latest debacle, this one a 34-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
In the process, the Raiders droppd to 3-8 and invited comparisons to the 2006 and 1997 Raiders teams that many remember as among the least successful.
They also are relegated to competing for a wild-card berth, as silly as that might sound, given they no longer can win a two-way tie with the Denver Broncos for the AFC West title. The Broncos improved to 8-3 and look light years better than the Raiders right now.
The Colts (7-4), Bengals (6-5) and Steelers (6-5) are the teams in the lead for the two wild-card spots in the AFC Playoffs.
Given that, we got a pretty good look today at just how far away the Raiders are from being a playoff-caliber team.
The Bengals jumped to a 24-0 halftime lead, coasted through the third period, survived a brief scare and pulled away for a convincing victory.
Cincinnati’s offensive and defensive lines outplayed their Oakland counterparts, Andy Dalton was more efficient that Carson Palmer at quarterback and, really, what else matters?

– Coach Dennis Allen speaks with the media Monday at 1 p.m. in his weekly news conference.
The interview everyone is eager to hear and read is the one scheduled Friday with general manager Reggie McKenzie.
It should be interesting to hear what McKenzie has to say on the heels of his team’s fourth straight loss, with the coach he fired on the opposing sideline Sunday high-fiving his new players, and the Raiders far less competitive this season than they were when he assumed the new role in January.

– The Raiders have allowed 169 points the past four games. Their point differential on the season is minus-138, two points better than the league-worst Chiefs.

– Not sure if many people noticed, but Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick recorded one tackle. He is the player the Bengals selected with the first-round pick they received from the Raiders as part of the compensation for trading Palmer last season.
Coincidentally, Jackson now is coaching Kirkpatrick. Jackson, of course, is the one that engineered the trade for Palmer. The Raiders also owe the Bengals their 2013 second-round pick as part of the deal.

– Rookie Tony Bergstrom got some more playing time Sunday. It figures to benefit him heading into next season, when he will be a candidate for a starting spot somewhere on the line.
On one play, Bergstrom was unable to keep up with a Bengals defender that got to Palmer.

– Palmer attempted eight passes for wide receivers Darrius Heyward-Bey and Denarius Moore. The only one that resulted in a reception came on a touchdown to Moore late in the game.
Heyward-Bey dropped a perfect pass on one throw, and Moore had at least one that seemed catchable.
On the bright side, rookie receiver Juron Criner caught three of the five passes thrown his way.

– Linebacker Philip Wheeler and defensive end Matt Shaughnessy recorded one sack each for the Raiders. That gives the Raiders 13 on the season, 3 1/2 fewer than 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith.

– Still don’t understand the rule where the Bengals lost a fumble, the Raiders recovered, everyone agreed on both, yet because of an inadvertent whistle by the officials the Bengals were allowed to choose between taking the result of the play or replaying the down.
Huh?
Fortunately for the Raiders, it didn’t cost them the game. It did cost them a chance to get back in the game and have an outside shot at a comeback. They deserved that chance.
Look for this rule to be one of several that gets changed in the offseason.

2009 we were 3-8, dead team walking and Bruce put the team on his back, got them to fight and beat a Pittsburgh team on the road at the 10am time slot.====================================

I cant disagree with this statement

We fired Hue after one year as HC, so I don’t see the problem of firing DA. we were able to find a HC after we fired Hue.

    yes, but who?

  • inonewordraider

david shaw is the answer. and seasons over, why the f isn’t pryor playing?

    Need?!

When I go to the Donkeys game, I would like to see Pryor get a series or two.

I don’t expect him to start and play all game, but no reason why somehting like the 3rd series couldn’t be some scripted plays for him.

If we are the only team calling, yes.

    But we probably aren’t.

Seriously, if we fire DA, we would be on 3 coaches in 3 seasons, going into a lame duck stadium issue with no real resolution in sight, and a doofus of an owner.

The 2013 Oakland Raider HC job might be the least desired HC job in the history of sports.

Don’t get too excited about the Reggie presser.

His “address” will be something along the lines of:

-No “rash” changes. Gregg Knapp is a great coach.

-DA will be given time to right the ship.

    -We need to have “patience”.

-A play here or play there and it would have been a different story this season.

-We’re getting better. It just isn’t showing up on the scoreboard.

-We still have a shot at the playoffs.
    ——————————————-
He would lose all credibility with this approach. He’s going to put everybody on notice that things are going to have to change–and by change I mean win a game, show improvement–or everybody is going to be evaluated. He has no choice but to come out very forcefully.

Oh we been losing big ??? when didn’t we lose big when we faced play off teams? IN GB last year? or NE at home? oh our team is worse than 06? the same year when teams just ran the ball down our throats cuz they weren’t afraid of losing the games once they went up 7-0 LMAO

  • Just Fire Baby

If they fire the HC and bring in some puppet at the end of the year, the most popular place in Alameda will be the training room, where every non-rookie and soon to be FA will all of a sudden be nursing muscle “Strains”.

If the plan is to can the whole staff, you can’t let the players know that with games left on the schedule.

The Reggie can’t be too forceful at the presser, or he will put himself on the hot seat.

I think he will answer some tough questions with a little bit of tough talk to appease fans and the media, and deflect blame from his players a little.

But he can’t just say this whole thing sucks and it is a failure on every level, or Amy and Mark will meet him at the end of it and say “agree Reggie, pack your bags as well”.

I don’t know what to tell you guys, and i don’t know why you guys think this all falls on the coaching , when we lost big against playoff bound teams last year as well, i don’t know if you think DA & JT is at fault if you got no pass rushers, what the eff are you going to do , we faced like 4 teams in a row , which had like atleast 2 receivers who could instantly be #1 on our teams, Vincent Jackson, Mike Williams, Baltimore starters, No receivers, Cin receivers, and not to forget good passers to get them the ball , how the eff are we going to stop these guys if we can’t get to their qb with natural pressure

After yet another embarrassing belly flop, in his home coming legacy game, carson has cemented himself as one of the all time raider trade blunders.

I dont any scenario where a gm who has suddenly found himself on the hot seat could bring this crestfallen sad sack iof qb back fro that whopping 13 million that is on the table.

Things certainly wont get ant easier on carson, with the browns up next. Im sure they have an archive on palmer being he was a former division foe.

Then 3 games in the division all of the division opponents have victimized carson with turnovers, and bludgeoned him, and feasted. Unlike the qb that preceded him who was undefeated against the division, Carson has only managed a meager 3-5 record in the afc west.

I doubt highly that carson will have a chance to even up his paltry division record or reach .500 as i cant envision him playing beyond cleveland and the bronco game.

In fact carson’s tryout has been a horrifying display of empty yardage stats, turnovers galore and failed leadership. Carson can only hope in his final fleeting appearances for the year he can have a mistake free game and get a win, so he may drum up some worth for the rest of the nfl.

Although this season has been a major improvement over last, it simply isnt good enough. This season has been a microcosm of carsons entire career. Big yardage totals, some highlight reel td passes, coupled with mind blowing game killing turnovers, sacks and mental gaffs. add in a few locker room / sideline tantrums and a dizzying losses piling up one after another.

I hope mark davis is like his pop, that presser gave me hope.

I dont think davis will sit by and let pryor sit the bench for the entire year.

Not with kapernic across the bay playing well, rgIII the hands down rookie of the year, the success of wilson, and what newton did last year.

Worry not raider fans there is still something to look forward to this year his name is TP6!!!

Where does palmer land next year?

    here with majo pay cut?

another desperate nfl team that buys his empty hype?

back on the coach with a bag of doritos and lovely parting gifts from the raiders?

The biggest blunder was made by Carolina franchise, drafted Clausen with 1st overall, then he took that franchise to #1 draft pick in 2 years, who then drafted C Newton with #1 overall , then with C Newton the team is back at draft #1 pick after 2 years again

DHB’s drop literally could have been a TD.

They brough heavy pressure, he had two steps on his man, and we have seen him run with the ball like a beast.

The inability to consistantly catch with his hands reared it’s ugly head again. He didn’t try to snag it with his hands, but kind of cradle it and it bounced of his forearms.
