Raiders-Bengals postgame thoughts, observations

Tried a new approach this time, waiting awhile after the Raiders played before putting pen to paper, so to speak. As it turns out, there is no putting a positive spin on the latest debacle, this one a 34-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
In the process, the Raiders droppd to 3-8 and invited comparisons to the 2006 and 1997 Raiders teams that many remember as among the least successful.
They also are relegated to competing for a wild-card berth, as silly as that might sound, given they no longer can win a two-way tie with the Denver Broncos for the AFC West title. The Broncos improved to 8-3 and look light years better than the Raiders right now.
The Colts (7-4), Bengals (6-5) and Steelers (6-5) are the teams in the lead for the two wild-card spots in the AFC Playoffs.
Given that, we got a pretty good look today at just how far away the Raiders are from being a playoff-caliber team.
The Bengals jumped to a 24-0 halftime lead, coasted through the third period, survived a brief scare and pulled away for a convincing victory.
Cincinnati’s offensive and defensive lines outplayed their Oakland counterparts, Andy Dalton was more efficient that Carson Palmer at quarterback and, really, what else matters?

– Coach Dennis Allen speaks with the media Monday at 1 p.m. in his weekly news conference.
The interview everyone is eager to hear and read is the one scheduled Friday with general manager Reggie McKenzie.
It should be interesting to hear what McKenzie has to say on the heels of his team’s fourth straight loss, with the coach he fired on the opposing sideline Sunday high-fiving his new players, and the Raiders far less competitive this season than they were when he assumed the new role in January.

– The Raiders have allowed 169 points the past four games. Their point differential on the season is minus-138, two points better than the league-worst Chiefs.

– Not sure if many people noticed, but Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick recorded one tackle. He is the player the Bengals selected with the first-round pick they received from the Raiders as part of the compensation for trading Palmer last season.
Coincidentally, Jackson now is coaching Kirkpatrick. Jackson, of course, is the one that engineered the trade for Palmer. The Raiders also owe the Bengals their 2013 second-round pick as part of the deal.

– Rookie Tony Bergstrom got some more playing time Sunday. It figures to benefit him heading into next season, when he will be a candidate for a starting spot somewhere on the line.
On one play, Bergstrom was unable to keep up with a Bengals defender that got to Palmer.

– Palmer attempted eight passes for wide receivers Darrius Heyward-Bey and Denarius Moore. The only one that resulted in a reception came on a touchdown to Moore late in the game.
Heyward-Bey dropped a perfect pass on one throw, and Moore had at least one that seemed catchable.
On the bright side, rookie receiver Juron Criner caught three of the five passes thrown his way.

– Linebacker Philip Wheeler and defensive end Matt Shaughnessy recorded one sack each for the Raiders. That gives the Raiders 13 on the season, 3 1/2 fewer than 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith.

– Still don’t understand the rule where the Bengals lost a fumble, the Raiders recovered, everyone agreed on both, yet because of an inadvertent whistle by the officials the Bengals were allowed to choose between taking the result of the play or replaying the down.
Huh?
Fortunately for the Raiders, it didn’t cost them the game. It did cost them a chance to get back in the game and have an outside shot at a comeback. They deserved that chance.
Look for this rule to be one of several that gets changed in the offseason.

I cant believe there are fools here making excuses for dennis allen?!?!?!

Big mack will admit he whiffed on allen, and allen will be fired if he doesnt put a better product on the field over the next couple of weeks.

Big mack is no dummy and he wont allen wreck his dream job, and will go out swinging trying to find the right guy.

Mark davis holds the hammer and this quote is just like listening to his father!

“As I said, coming in I didn’t know that we had a Super Bowl team and everything, but you can’t blame it on the salary cap and all that. You have players and you coach ‘em and you play. You got to be Raiders.” mark davis

Just like when pops told lance

    “you have players coach them”

so while excuses my sooth the fragile nerves of battered allen fans and palmer worshipers, they will not fly with davis.

    This is clear.

Davis nor big mack will keep a coach simply for fear of being one and done or appearing unstable to the fans.

They are aware that there are many coaches that can do the job and want one of the 32 nfl head coach post, and would love to work for the illustrious silver and black.

Only fans media and retread coaches will tell you other wise.

Exactly, but even a verbal doesn’t mean anything…

Shaw is from a football family, I think he would respect the game and the process enough to not squawk on a verbal.

Drops Hella Balls should have his contract restructured in the offseason and should be demoted to no. 4 WR or cut if he doesn’t restructure. I’m sure his agent won’t get any calls from other teams clamoring for his services. He didn’t pick himself at no.7 overall, but he is really a 5th or 6th round talent at best and should be paid accordingly as one.

  • Just Fire Baby

I’m big fan of DHB, works hard and always goes hard on field on every play ,

    ***************************

The young man deserves a ton of credit for working hard and improving. In the Al Davis tribute game, he may have been the best player on the field that day.

He could have easily had his rookie year disaster, all the media scrutiny and just said screw it and turn into JJ Soward or something. He didn’t and worked hard, and deserves major kudo’s doing so.

With all that being said, this is about as good as he gets. You look at all the WR’s who took a year or two to improve (like a Cliff Branch) a lot of the times, their 3rd year was their best year, or at least about the peak of what they can do.

DHB’s peak is about 50 catches for 900 yards and a handful of scores , coupled with a boatload of drops.

Recap: The season continues to unravel for the Raiders. They are 3-8 and have lost four straight games. Oakland is simply not competitive . It is being blown out routinely and has allowed 169 points in the past four games. It is the third highest total in any four-game stretch in NFL history, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

How many drops does dhb have this year?

I think there is too much being made of his drop yesterday as moore is clearly the wr that has struggled in that department, while dhb has been solid mostly all year.

In fact it is brandon myers moore and dmac that have all been hampered with drops, tied for 8th and 15th in dropped passes. DHB doesnt even appear on the list.

he is clearly the best of the group yet knapp and palmer refuse to get him the ball. probably one of the reasons we are 3-8

The issue is he isnt targeted nearly enough, and this is both on palmer, and knapp.

Knapp should feature dhb in the passing game. DHB reminds me very much of many wrs that have played, he needs to get in the action early. a quick bubble screen or reverse or quick slant to get him going.

This is the folly of plamer and knapp.

last year JC made it a point to get dhb involved early and it led to dhb improving by leaps and bounds.

Enter palmer who instantly favored moore, and after a year and a half the entire wr group looks worse than they did before his arrival.

What self-respecting coach confident in his skills and wanting to show the world what he can do wouldn’t want a job like the Raiders? Come on, some of you act like coaches have their pick of the litter where it comes to talented teams. Teams looking for coaches have issues. Maybe some are better than others when you consider notoriety and stadiums, but the main issue here was Davis not wanting to give up control. That is no longer the case here.

  • inonewordraider

you have to blame the coaching because the roster isn’t so much worse player wise than it was the last two years yet look at how we’re playing.
