McClain not at practice today for ‘team-related issues’
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, November 28th, 2012 at 1:26 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen said at his daily news conference today that middle linebacker Rolando McClain wasn’t at practice today because of “team-related issues.”
When asked for more specifics, Allen declined.
“No more details, no more comments, just team-related issues,” Allen said.
It’s also unclear whether McClain will be back anytime soon. Allen said “I don’t know that” when asked if McClain would be back at practice Thursday.
If McClain doesn’t play Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, Omar Gaither likely would get the nod. He is a seasoned veteran that is versatile enough to play inside or outside.

trade him to the Browns so McFadden can have a field day and he can fly back on the Browns charter.

$3 million already went to him as a signing bonus. The Raiders cannot avoid that part of the cap hit.
They can do something about the remaining $13 million though. Either get him to restructure, trade him or cut him. It’s too much to pay him.

And even then, which Alex Smith are you getting? He was in a WCO before and looked awful. Harbaugh is the only coach who got the most out of him – and even he seems to think that Alex Smith can’t quite take his team to the next level.

The diatribe claiming that supporters of TP being racist is tired and cumbersome. Give it a rest, you’re more boring than that lame, futile dude with the party boat trapped in the 80’s.
Palmer is by far the best QB we have, but it is stupid that Pryor has not seen the field in some capacity. Why not give him some looks as wildcat or situational QB to make the defense account for him ? Why not pull some gadget plays from the backfield, line him up in the slot and fake reverses or get the ball in his hands as a second QB on the field. He’s not ready to start at QB but could get involved in some way and get some reps.
No creativity at all !!! Predictable and ineffective offense! Maybe our red zone offense would be better ? Cam Newton has 20 running TD s the last two years. More than our entire team ! Pryor could do it too. Triple threat in the red zone !

Any action, practice, or belief that reflects the racial worldview—the ideology that humans are divided into separate and exclusive biological entities called “races,” that there is a causal link between inherited physical traits and traits of personality, intellect, morality, and other cultural behavioral features, and that some “races” are innately superior to others. Racism was at the heart of North American slavery and the overseas colonization and empire-building activities of some western Europeans, especially in the 18th century. The idea of race was invented to magnify the differences between people of European origin in the U.S. and those of African descent whose ancestors had been brought against their will to function as slaves in the American South. By viewing Africans and their descendants as lesser human beings, the proponents of slavery attempted to justify and maintain this system of exploitation while at the same time portraying the U.S. as a bastion and champion of human freedom, with human rights, democratic institutions, unlimited opportunities, and equality. The contradiction between slavery and the ideology of human equality, accompanying a philosophy of human freedom and dignity, seemed to demand the dehumanization of those enslaved. By the 19th century racism had matured and the idea spread around the world. Racism differs from ethnocentrism in that it is linked to physical and therefore immutable differences among people.– miriam webster

I suspect the real reason TP hasn’t seen a lot of snaps is quite simple.
You have to shine in practice before you get the chance to step on the field during a game. Many who shine in practice (no contact on qb’s)struggle mightily when in a game.
Can’t recall someone who looked bad in practice, be inserted into a game, who then shined.
I suspect DA’s comments about how TP is getting better, and is working hard, but isn’t quite there yet, means what it says. He’s just not ready.

55, I respect your opinion YA as always, but i have heard he is more “middle of the road” on run d than a liability.
I’m encouraged they at least tried to make the team better by at least going through the motions of putting in a claim.
Although it may have been just for show and figured they wouldn’t get him anyway.
After DA publicly stated “We don’t have pass rushers” I think they had to at least pretend they were willing to address it.
==============
I don’t know, the Eagles were rotating him out on 1st and 2nd down in favor of Hunt, Graham, and Curry. He has a great first step, but I see him losing contain a lot because he doesn’t have much of a counter move, especially when he’s already shot upfield.
Maybe he would have helped. But if he can’t make an impact on a defense as bad as the Eagles’, I’m not sure how he’d do it on a much worse defense.

The jury is still out. We have almost a third of the season left. If I know my NFL coaches they are going to try to win games and build for next year. But if the season ended today, I can see your argument. Personally, I would not fire the HC for a couple of reasons: I think he has been saddled with a high salary underperforming roster, like the other 5-6 coaches right in front of him. 2ndly, I think he has been saddled by some weak coordinators. Reggie McKenzie took his time hiring his HC. By the time he did, the good coordinators and other coaches were gone. Allen should be able to evaluate his roster, make some changes, upgrade the staff, and then lets see what we have. That is my feeling.

===============
Hue was Al’s coach. Not Mark’s or Reggie’s. If you’re going to have to completely rebuild (and Hue or not, the Raiders were going to need to), then the new regime needs to be able to pick a guy who shares their vision.
Remember, this is a dramatic rebuild. The guy who ran football operations for 60 years is gone. In his wake he left a poor roster, lack of draft picks, and unsustainable salary cap situation.
New regime needed to be put in place. You can’t handcuff them. Give them a chance to make a roster the way THEY know how, with long-term goals in mind. That’s the only way you can build a winner in this league. If it’s more of the same in 3 years, then it’ll someone else’s chance to turn it around – but at least this time the franchise will operate the way modern franchises do and the next regime won’t be starting from nothing.
Don’t give me the “we were 8-8 last year!” bull. The cap situation was coming one way or another. Hue wasn’t going to have any more draft picks than McKenzie and Allen had to work with.
Yes, you want continuity within your organization – front office, coaching staff, roster – but that wasn’t in the cards regardless. Even if they kept Hue and Al Saunders in their positions, the whole rest of the organization was going to change around them. Might as well bring in guys who are all going to be on the same page.

Dude, you must be high. REALLY HIGH. lst off, Jackson went 0-5, errr, 1-4 to end the season. That is AWFUL. Jackson was also getting BLOWN OUT badly in games. The big difference between Allen and Jackson is Jackson made idiotic bone headed decisions over and over and over. Remember the Cleveland game where Jackson could have kicked a 18 yard FG to make it a two possession game, but didn’t? Then went for it, didn’t get it and should have lost? Or how’s about the Detroit game where we were up by 12 with 7 minutes to go and he doesn’t go for two? And then we lose by one? Remember that? Those were BONEHEADED Decisions. You say DA has more control than Jackson? HUH? What is McKenzie doing in his office? Playing Dungeons and Dragons? The ghost of Al still ran Jacksons team?? Puh-lease. Put down the waa dude.
November 28th, 2012 at 2:31 pm
Keeping around incompetent people for the sake of continuity isn’t the recepie for success. See Norv Turner in San Diego for an example.
November 28th, 2012 at 2:31 pm
If DA didnt like the talent here he should of stayed an assistant and waited for a position that suited him came along instead of fkn up our team. Hue didnt get worse we juswt lost a few close games, Da on the other hand is getting blown out every fk. Sunday. We got blew out by a 1 loss gb team in greenbay last year and a Superbowl contending patriots team, with Da at the helm we’re getting bent over by average teams like the bucs and No at home. Rookie rbs and qbs are tearing us apart.
November 28th, 2012 at 2:33 pm
Now, are McKenzie, Allen and their staff responsible for this roster underachieving? Sure, they have their part in that. The Brisiel and Tollefson signings haven’t panned out, the defensive scheme has failed to adjust, and fundamentals have been poor even with the penalty situation improving.
But you can’t give a coaching staff one of the 5 worst rosters in the league and expect miracles. The coaching needs to be better, but the talent level needs to get better along with it.

the notion that palmer is ‘playing well” is inconsequential at this point. that would only matter if we were competing for a playoff spot and we clearly are not.
Now out of the playoffs it is time to evaluate the young qb so we may know if he is the future.
Why is that difficult to understand, it is a common nfl practice and has been for decades.
Also the notion that palmer is playing well is debatable.
i say he played decently until the atl game, he has not maintained the that level of play since
pre atl 5 tds 3 turn overs

i would say that over all it is only mediocre and not really “playing well’, but it is beside the point either way

But you can’t give a coaching staff one of the 5 worst rosters in the league and expect miracles. The coaching needs to be better, but the talent level needs to get better along with it.

But, the offensive talent was just fine last year?!?

Raiders could have the best offense in the NFL and they would still be 6-6 because of the terrible defense.

They performed better at times but were similarly flawed. Putting up points hasn’t really been any more of an issue this year. The real concern is that the defense seems to be even worse than an historically bad defense from last season, even with a new DC and a supposedly improved scheme.

While McJog never did squat but lay out spoles and glad he is gone, I would not b surprised at all if he does better on his next team.

I agree, and I’m sure everyone inside the organization knows that dramatic improvement needs to be made in 2013.

I still don’t understand why Reggie couldn’t have kept Wylie, Wiz, and Saunders on the staff to continue last year’s offense UNDER Dennis Allen’s choice for OC, Knapp.
I understand that Allen was set to pick his own staff, but if you’re going to try and be competitive this year (and apparently, they tried) then do what everyone wanted them to do and focus on the defense while keeping the offense stable for this season.
Allen could have appointed his own OC while still retaining the same offensive structure. Reggie needed at least one season to clear cap room, at which point they could have then overhauled the line for the ZBS. All they would have had to do was re-sign Satele.
Hindsight is 20/20, but for someone who is supposed to be deliberate, Reggie tried to change too much too fast.

DA / Reggie supporters don’t have a leg to stand on.
Their Argument: Dennis Allen is better than Hue Jackson.
Their Excuse for a noncompetitive 3-8 team-: What did you expect? They inherited a mess. There’s no talent on this roster.
Well, which one is it? If the talent is so bad, how did Hue Jack coach them up to 8-8? If Hue Jack was not a good coach, not far superior to DA, then we have at least 8-8 talent on this team and anything less represents failed coaching and leadership.
You’ve got nothing. There is nothing logical or tangible to support your argument.
Face it: You banked on Al Davis being the one thing holding this team back and getting a “real GM” and his handpicked coach would improve things. They haven’t. They’ve botched pretty much everything including somehow making our D substantially worse than it was under Chuck B.
We were better off with Hue.-
November 28th, 2012 at 2:45 pm
Im high? You mention that Cleveland game talking about we barely won, but point is we won. Even with that decision he did enough for us to still pull it out. And how can you blame him for that Detroit loss when we were up 2 possessions in the “4th” youd expect your D to be able to hold a 2 score lead in the fourth and theres no guarantee we would have converted it… even with that though he called the right plays to march us down field for a game winning field goal but it got blocked. That game wasnt on him that was on chuck bresnahan who hue had nothing to do with his being here who hue was going to replace. Hue scored enough points to win the D let him down, Da is a defensive coach and he isnt stopping anybody. He has done nothing to show he deserves to be here next year, i see no promise in this guy.

Last year we had a Top Oline, Top running game, and these people came in and tore it up.
Why in Hell would anyone come in a tear up a good oline? Good, Well Organized Olines don’t grow on trees you know?

the notion that palmer is ‘playing well” is inconsequential at this point.
===================================
Of course it is not inconsequential. We had this discussion already. There are players that are going to be on your roster next year. The analogy I gave you was do you bench your best player the last couple of games as a pee wee coach because some loud mouth idiotic parent wants his lame ass kid to play Q? The answer is what kind of message does that send to all the other players? I can tell you: it sends a very bad message.
November 28th, 2012 at 2:47 pm
I bet McClain goes to a 3-4 team and becomes an above average LB.
I have always said he needs someone next to him. Just watch, the kid is not done in the NFL.
Just one more example of the Raiders misusing a talent.

The worst part is our o-line coaches were still available at the time: Wiz and Wylie. Don’t see why they would mess with that unit in the first year of a transition period.

I respect your opinion and I can see why a lot of fans don’t have confidence in Allen. But in the examples I used that you countered, yes, the FG against Detroit was blocked. But it was a 66 yard FG attempt. If Jackson needs to do something that has never been done before to win, he doesn’t deserve to win. And in the Cleveland game, Cleveland scored, got the onside kick, and the defense held. So once again, Jackson had nothing to do with the team winning and should have lost it by being a bonehead.

i understand that you think it is not a good practice, yet that has no bearing on the fact that it is an accepted practice in football and has been for decades.
In fact it sometimes happens even to players playing well or winning and sometimes before the last quarter of the season.
Do i need to cite the examples again?
your disagreement is noted, but it will not stop the inevitable

Mcclain is a good LB he just needs to be in the 3-4 or have some great coching which he hasnt gotten since he’s been here. Many Raider draft picks have failed here from lack of lack of good coaching, we’re just now getting a qb coach for god sakes I mean c’mon man a lot of these guys we drafted never had a shot because they were drafted by an org that wasnt stable.
November 28th, 2012 at 2:58 pm
this group is hilarious…cut mcclain, he svcks!!!! Uhhh…i think he is going to be good on another team. Talk about covering your behinds…
Its al davis’ mess….now that reggie has changed over half the roster….zone defense is the way to go, no more man….uhhh well we dont really have corners….you people.

Last year we didn’t have a good O-Line, it’s amazing how soon we forget how poorly the lined pass protected last year. I didn’t hear anyone crying for Satele to come back or anyone who thought Barnes would be needed. Bush and McFadden ran the ball well at times but the line got ate up a lot in the passing game just like this year and even the run game was less successful as the season went on. It helped that Moore and Ford were more of a threat in the passing game. This year the receivers aren’t getting open against 1 on 1 coverage.
November 28th, 2012 at 3:02 pm
Mcclain is a good linebacker. he just has to play in a system that doesnt require him to defend against the pass, choose the right gap, get his uniform dirty, or have to run. He’s good , just ask his mother.

There is some truth to that…..but you can’t coach the lazy out of some people. Slowlando and JaFatazz are both lazy.
Michael Huff and Robert Gallery…..those guys were not lazy, just not talented.
DHB….not lazy, just not a very good football player….I am pulling for the guy because he seems like a very hard worker, he just doesn’t have much to work with outside of speed.
McFadden….now that guy would benefit from a change of scenery.

Cleveland scored got the onside kick and still loss, why? Because hue scored enough to win. So he is responsible for them winning that game. Last time I checked in order to win you have to outscore the other team and he coached them to doing so. The defense just did their job and stopped somebody, that’s what you call a team effort … hue and the offense did their job and the defense did theirs, they both deserve credit for that win. But with DA we’re scoring 20 plus points and we’re still losing. DA was brought in to fix this defense because it was a weakness and hes just made it worse along with every other aspect of the team. Defense is his baby and he can’t even take care of that. Smh

Trent Richardson is talking McJogger up because he is hoping the coaching staff bites and gives McJogger more PT. Trent Richardson knows he will have a career day if McJogger plays a lot.
Probably used to brutalize and abuse McJogger in practice every day.

The apologists need to just stop w excusing the coaches.
This team was not playoff material but seriously – this is bad of HISTORICAL proportions.
Carson Palmer, while not my favorite, is better than most…
Many folks here have noted the drop off from seemingly every player. How does DMoore fail to achieve with Palmer when he could with JC? Really it’s not rocket science it’s run the route and catch the ball. Was the route practiced? Was the play in on time and communicated? Rarely does this team show any good tempo.
You simply cannot defend the play calling by Knapp. The inability to utilize more players (REECE), other TEs and more sets.
Consistently running draws on 3rd and long. Christ we saw the EXACT same thing the first time Knapp was here.
Do not defend this defense – you cannot blitz the safeties from 15 yards out constantly when the line gets zero pressure. Bengals laughed they knew exactly what to expect. we got a hc with supposed defensive knowlege for crying out loud! There is too much to list here – the stats speak for themselves and in better english than Tommy Kelley.
We should demand better.

If McClain is indeed cut, looks like the likelihood the Raiders go Te’o in the draft just went way up.
