The Raiders on Friday suspended middle linebacker Rolando McClain two games for conduct detrimental to the team.
McClain is eligible to return to the team Dec. 10. He was excused from practice Wednesday after a talk with coach Dennis Allen. On Thursday, the Raiders asked McClain not to show up for practice, and he complied.
McClain will not be paid for the two games he is suspended. That amounts to a little more than $100,000.
This means that Omar Gaither will start at middle linebacker Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, a little more than two weeks after being signed by the Raiders.
Gaither has experience as a starter at all three linebacker spots, so he should be able to step in and hold his own. He also is versatile enough to play on passing situations, something McClain wasn’t permitted to do the past seven games.
